GC: You will have before you the entity [2174], born August 28, 1890, in Canton, N. Y., who seeks information, advice and guidance as to her present mental and material affairs. Considering the growing importance of her relation to the oil opportunities in Texas, which are now centering around the personalities of Geo. L. Marquess of Houston and R. T. Myers of Tyler, you will please give what her former relationship has been with each of these two men; advising what the relationship should be in the present, for the good of all concerned. You will answer the questions, as I ask them:
-
EC: Yes, we have the records here of that entity now known as or called [2174], also the relationships borne with Marquess and Myers.
-
These in the present are, in a manner, very definitely related to activities during the experiences of the entity in the Egyptian period.
-
While there the relationships were not concerning oil, they WERE concerning the products of the earth. For, as the activities were related to the products such as precious stones, metals, these brought about a condition - as may be termed, - in which there was the breaking down of insincerity which had materially existed between these two individuals now known as Marquess and Myers.
-
True, the relationships in the Egyptian experience, from those activities in Atlantis, were in reversed positions - in a manner. For, then Marquess was in that position of being in authority, as to relationships established with natives of the lands then under consideration for activities.
-
That there should in the present be presented opportunities for a reviving of possibilities, as well as the opportunities for material expression of ideas and desires in the present, would then not be amiss; in that the pattern was begun with those activities in the Abyssinian land, as well as in what is now the southernmost or upper portion of the Nile.
-
In making practical application of such in the present, - it is evident that conditions, by their contact in the present, have manifested what may be termed the better natures, the better purposes of both Marquess and Myers. It is evidenced that these offer opportunities to the entity, [2174], for the material fulfilling of purposes.
-
As to choices in the matter, - from the material standpoint, and to others of a materialistic tendency, it becomes very speculative. These choices, then, must be made by the entities themselves. Yet they offer opportunities for materialization of purposes as related to prospects or possibilities, and policies, in furthering the educational program, as well as opportunities for the ideas AND ideals as related to those conditions SO needed in an educational means as pertaining to soil, animal, vegetable, in its relationships to man in the conditions arising in his present experience.
-
These as we find are those counsels as would be indicated from here.
-
As to the factual relationships that have existed, - in that particular period each of these individuals was of those groups that had come to the Egyptian land for material safety, owing to those understood conditions as brought about the complete destruction of that man had builded.
-
This indicates the opportunities of these possibilities, then, in the present, through those activities in the material expression to give impetus of spirit, of purpose, of a constructive nature - as the association has brought into the experience of each; that there may become materially manifested the means for the materializing of ideas and ideals in the present.
-
What, ye may ask, were the associations in that particular period?
-
The entity now known as [2174] was in the position, as we have indicated, of a leader in those groups that were so advanced in the activities from the materializations in Atlantis.
-
Hence, when there was the coordinating of the activities with the purposes of those in position of power or authority from the philosophical or spiritual standpoint in that particular period - as to HOW these opportunities of the products of the soil might be made to become a part of the pattern in the activities of individuals to whom there were the material as well as the spiritual imports of such - the appeal was made from these individuals, Marquess and Myers as known in the present, to that entity capable of making those associations for same to become a part of the program, - from those in authority politically as well as in the spiritual life.
-
These then present themselves in this manner in the present.
-
Ready for questions.
-
(Q) Is this an opportunity to further the dreams I have had for … [school] and for a vital cooperative community in … [N.H.] or is it merely a financial temptation? (A) As has been indicated, this depends upon the use of the advice and counsel as will naturally come from outside influences, as to the usages to which the material returns are put, in the activities from same.
As to the sincerity of the individuals in the present, little doubt can be put. It IS a venture, because it depends upon the activities of others over which the purpose of neither has control, spiritually and mentally. Yet as we find, material gains will come. And, as to whether it is a financial temptation or the furthering and fulfilling of dreams, hopes and desires, depends upon its usage.
-
(Q) Any other advice or counsel at this time? (A) Look deep within self. Let each that may be associated in such understand the ideals of the entity, and it will be much easier to meet the problems arising from overabundance of material gains.
-
We are through for the present.

R5. 12/1/41 EC’s letter: “Am in hopes you had a most satisfactory meeting with your oil board today and that everything works out as He would have it.”
R6. 12/6/41 Letter: “You ask about the oil. I did a bit of straight talking and I hope made them have more confidence in my two men. The thing that cheered [2091] was that Myers and Marques are working together. He may relax. Marques is coming to N. Y. after a trip to Florida. I do hope it is before I go to [N.H.]. However, it may be after. It will work out.
“Bless you all.”
R7. 12/31/41 She requested a Life Rdg. for Mr. [2647].
R8. 1/3/42 EC’s ltr. to Mrs. [2174]: “How are you all? Hope you had a most pleasant Christmas. Am sure it was all broken into, but one finds such things I suppose during these strenuous times; we were fortunate enough to have E. E. home for few hours Christmas day. Only time to have dinner with us - everyone was so nice to me, feel as if was very unworthy, but hope to make up some way. Be sure and thank [2464] for the figures [3 little china angels for EC’s ‘what not’, representing EC; GC; GD.], would you call them, will be most interesting to know what you and she felt represented the activities of each of us. They are fine, have them on a little shelf just over my desk. I chose the light, maybe it was because think this the nicest looking figure - my own ego or vanity would crop out - shows up on us when we least expect.
“All are very well thank you. Heard from one of my friends in Pearl Harbor on the 7th. All O.K. one of those Gov. post cards tell nothing - yet tell all that should be told I suppose.
“Just had letter from a Mr. [2647], …, Ont. - sends his application and says you are sponsoring the rdg., is that right? Making the appointment for afternoon of the 9th.
“Hoping for each of you a fine New Year.”
R9. 1/13/42 See 2647-1, Par. 41-A in re former associations with Mrs. [2174] in Greece and Egypt in educational work.
R10. 2/9/42 [2174]‘s ltr. to EC: “I am enclosing a check for $20, because I would like a life rdg. for a little English girl of 5 whom I have taken under protective custody for the duration. Her name is [2690]. She was born in Westcliffe-on-sea, Essex, England, March 30th, 1936. I want to know what her tendencies are that should be developed but patience. Partly? I want to know her past relationships with her brother [2691] and how I should attack the problem of her relationship with him (which is bad for her but worse for him.)
“She is so young I know I can have her rdg. I would also like one for [2691]. Born Antwerp, Belgium Sept. 5, 1931. He’s ten and it may be I should discuss it with him, but he is such a pathetic child - like a dog at bay and using Nazi methods that I do not know that anything would get through and it is to help me with the solving that problem as much as anything that I would like the rdg. I will try however if you say so. He is exceedingly bright. Ask if he is better boarding at the school with boys of his own age or if I should bring him home at night. He [2691] is now boarding.
“Life is exceedingly strenuous these days - my husband is based in New York and comes home. He is sadly tense, critical and nervous. From now for awhile will come my ultimate solving of that problem. Much is ‘up to me’. We do not know how soon he will go to sea or where. I am worried about him. He has lost his last chance for promotion and men in classes below him have gone ahead. It is hard for him, bitterly hard but he is taking it well. Tragic!! An English defeat in Lybia one can take, but a husband’s defeat in the home is difficult. He sits in the library hour on end with the radio full blast. It shows how many hours he has lived a solitary life - ingrained habit. Ah well!
“We are putting on the Gilbert and Sullivan operetta ‘Patience’ at school. Pray for its success. I do wish Mr. [2647] were here to do it with me.
“The impact of life (personally) is terrific but I am strong and well. I WOULD adopt two English children in the midst of everything wouldn’t I? But I always had wanted to and these came along.
“My love to everybody.
“[2690] put the gold circle on the envelope - if it is still there when the letter arrives.”
R11. 3/28/42 [2174]‘s ltr. to EC: “My dear friend - the most amazing things have been happening to me and the way to Wilton [N.H.] is at last clear!!! I am starting a school in Wilton [N.H.] next fall for children from 12 to college. Step by step the pattern has unfolded - unexpected - unforeseen, but inevitable and right.
“I called a trustee meeting about the middle of Jan. …I offered to pay the taxes and interest on money borrowed for next year of the faculty and school felt they could carry on. The faculty were keen but when they came with suggestions were told that they had nothing to say - that they should take it or leave it on the present administration. As that administration had steadily run a deficit of $20,000. No one had any confidence in it. Then the real Miss […] began to come out and those around her. The faculty divided - a question of democratic principle on our side and a personal … as [2174] feeling or the other. We tried to hold the faculty as a unit before a 2nd trustee meeting and closed the meeting on a resolution to make no suggestions but wait for trustee suggestions. The assistant principle rose & shouted there was a paper to be signed. And that paper was signed!!! If I had prayed to God to divide the living elements from the dead wood and hangers on I would not have been better answered. At the trustee meeting they closed door after door against any idea of mine - and the next day I resigned. That took all the wind out of their sails because they were firmly convinced that I was out to grab the school away from Miss […] and now today - all the high school faculty have resigned and some others including Mslle [2629]. As discussions have gone on and I realized that I was having a high school handed to me I said that I would take them to [N.H.]. And now I have a fine nugget of tried people who have been through fire together this year and who have been building together for five years. We are gay, thrilled, and all seeing vistas - and I’m going to Wilton [N.H.] tomorrow to interview builders and AM I IN DEEP.
“It is strange that after I had resigned and all pennies I might give to the school were out of the question I had an offer for my private lease in Texas - so I CAN raise capital.
“But oh! it has been careful and quiet stepping.
“But now we are free to build!! and I have a school that I can proudly talk about - granted it is still in the air but I KNOW it is good.
“I’ll send you a folder as soon as it is out - I think we will call it […], don’t forget the farm.
“Are you excited? I am. It all worked itself on so steadily. And insirtably [?]. I thought for a time that we might take over in [Conn.] but that is obviously not necessary and everyone is now looking toward [N.H.].
“I am karmically free of Miss […] - I was determined not to make the break and have to live it over again. The sense of freedom that I had through the night I thought it all out and decided to resign was a real experience - I had wings.
“Pray for me as my little hands are full.
“Read my first life reading - no all of them.
“Thanks for [2690] & [2691]‘s readings. [2690] has made [2464] over!!!
“I am thoroughly convinced that God knows best and that he can manage much better than we ever could conceive.”
R12. 3/21/42 EC’s ltr. to [2174]: “Glad to have yours of the 28th always nice to hear from you. You have certainly been having some exciting times, yet am sure you have kept as quiet as you please. The idea of a school at […] [N.H.] seems just lovely to me, and while the whole endeavor may offer many problems of various natures, am sure you will be able to meet each of them in a satisfactory way, and do a world of good and that is what is needed at this time, to prepare the young folks to take hold of the problems that this present unpleasantness is producing meeting them in the way as to bring each person as well as the country as a whole the need and the necessity to getting closer to GOD.
“After all will not be easy to slip out of the work at [Conn.], even with all its problems, too much of your soul self has gone into the work there, yet such things can become untenable and change is needed, and believe you have solved the problem correctly. Am happy that you are not giving up the work, for those willing to do their part are needed more today than ever before in the history of this fair land of ours. That you have an ideal place at […] [N.H.] don’t think can be questioned, will take sacrifice and work yes, much of it but where there is a WILL there is a way, and when one has the LORD on their side who can be against them?
“Much as has been given for various ones, would seem to me to indicate that just such a move would come about, and you have your helpers or many of them at hand, helpers fitted to work under just such conditions under your directions.
“May His Blessings be with you and keep you always.
“Have had rather a hectic time of it here about, have had one bad spell some time in Feb. think it was but all pretty well again, and carrying on. Gertrude has been marvelous, with all her worry about Edgar Evans she has kept to the line and is doing well. He is in Training school in N.J. should be if he able to make the grade through about the 10th of April.
“From his letters believe the training under War conditions has broadened him and given him an appreciation of daily living for truth and right, given him chance to compare life as a whole, and may make him better able to fill his place in the world.
“H. L. is busy with his recreation work, one gets the idea the works in Washington has not forgotten the post war days, and are in some measure - just so far as those handling same has any vision, preparing for something better for the people of our land, one gets something of a vision of what is being thought at least, one may not always agree with methods used, but as said this depends much on those whose hands it is intrusted as to what will come out of it all, and so it is with your school the vision you have the love for mankind the appreciation for the efforts made, will bring the help as is needed from Divine sources, am more convinced than ever without that, we are indeed running round in circles and getting nowhere fast.
“Am glad you like the information for the young people [2690] & [2691] - just hope it may help in fitting them to meet their own problems as they arise daily. Interesting what you say about [2464] & [2690], but can see how just such would supply that stimuli for [2464] at this time. Give all there our love. Think of you often…
“Book is being rewritten will be pub. in Nov. this year.”
R13. 5/25/42 [2174]‘s ltr. from New Hampshire to Judy Chandler:
“Life has been altogether too complex and difficult but with all thrilling!! And the result is that I am starting my own school in […] [N.H.] on my own place and taking a wonderful faculty with me and we are off & free - and everything is breaking my way it seems. I can’t write the story - it is a ‘telling’ one but God bless Edgar Cayce who built up the courage for me.
“Do tell your friends about it. It is going to be unique with nature all around us and spiritual values in the work.
“I can’t tell you what a series of ‘coincidences’ have played into my unsuspecting hands. No human mind could have formed the pattern.
“I have wings.”
R14. 5/26/42 EC’s ltr. to [2174]: “How are you? heard from Mr. [2091] that you went to Texas. How are things going for you there? trust all is well with each of you we are all able to be up and on the go. Are to have another wedding in the family soon. The other boy Edgar Evans is to be married on the 13th of June - he after receiving his commission as 2nd Lieut. was sent on to Harvard for further study. Believe though wrote you that, he will be there for three or six months - likes it fine and seems to be doing very well.
“Received the announcement of the opening of the […] School. This is very lovely. The faculty looks very imposing it seems to me but what will the other school do without you?
“Thank you very much for letting us hear from you. Hope to see the school some day. How are all the folks, do let us hear from you our meeting is the 19th and 20th of June, can’t you come down? Or are there no one in these parts now that might induce you to come?
“Love to each of you and please remember us to each one.”
R15. 5/27/42 [2174]‘s ltr. to EC: “Dear friend: Your letter came today and seems a little wistful. I am glad to know the dates of the meeting this year and I was thinking of you these last two days and so was not surprised to hear from you. I would love to come down but I cannot tell what life will bring. I have been serving [?] into a vortes of activity - all my dreams seem to be coming true and better than I hoped. I thought I wrote you a LONG letter about events but it must have been LONG ago. My story is hard to tell on paper and that is one reason I would like to come down and talk it to you.
“I don’t know what the other school will do without me frankly but they put me out; at least they told me I could teach (and well) and could give money but that I could have no voice in how the money was spent and they told me and the faculty in good Nazi terms. The situation was untenable. So I resigned and let them run things as they wanted. You see they thought I was grabbing the school away from Miss […] and it never dawned upon them that I would stand by what I said and really meant what I said. They did not know what they were doing but I gave them what they asked for. The only difficulty for them was that when I resigned so did other members of the faculty. So I told them (the faculty) that what we had been working heart & soul on could NOT die & that I would take them as a group to [N.H.] and that is how it all began. I have a tremendous sense of freedom I KNOW that I have been liberated karmically.
“But the others are pathetic - there is no unity of purpose and a great deal of emotion including hatred. Now they know just what they really have. But the thing they are going to miss most was all the little somethings [?] over all the little executive things that got done - jobs - relationships
- and no word said. It is very hard to sit quietly and watch them try to manage the thing they asked for. What a test of people it has been - and they are all showing in their true light. These times are a testing ground for each and every one of us. You MUST come some day - any day you can. For we will now be all the year around in [N.H.] - what fun. All my family - and my things under one roof - all my interests. My family all LOVE it and - [2464] will teach. Son […] (from Alaska) is cheering [2627] - [2425] & [2607] there and feeding us. And Son […] at Harvard only 50 miles away.
“I do hope Edgar Evans has chosen as wisely and well as Hugh Lynn.
“Give my love to everyone - I don’t forget - and I’ll try to come down.
“Do you want to send [1208] to me now? I can guarantee what things will be - I am FREE and I’ll take him any time. When and if you think best.”
R16. 6/10/42 EC’s ltr. to [2174]: “Thank you for yours of the 27th do hope it will be practical for you to get down for the meeting. Would like very much to have a talk with you regards all the developments. Think it so marvelous the school at … what a great source of good that can be made to be and just the ones about you to help make that a reality is wonderful.
“Just hope the other school will fill what ever place it has at this time - but feel sure you will be missed as many have never dreamed you would be. Think it so wonderful that you have all of your family in accord with the movement - for in Union there is strength - and with the ideals and purposes you have am sure - God’s Richest Blessing will attend the every effort there in …
“We are all agog here just now over the wedding this weekend
- E. E. flies down from School Friday night - marries Sat. afternoon at 3:30 and both leave on plane just after ceremony for Boston - Gertrude is taking this much more serious than she did H. L.’s too am sure she doesn’t think so. The little girl Katherine Bane is a very sweet level headed little girl, very lovely family and feel sure she will make E. E. a lovely companion - she is his first sweetheart - and her first beaux
- how such work out do not know. Lets hope all is well - readings say they will be good for each other.
“Will talk over the matter regards [1208] when you are here
- been some changes there but there is needed such training now for him more than ever would be a wonderful experiment - and I believe his salvation.
“Thanking you and hoping to see you next week.
“With love from all - asking to be remembered to all.”
R17. 8/42 [2174]‘s ltr. from New Hampshire to EC: “I have just received a telegram from Mr. George Marquess stating that he will be in Va. Beach on Tuesday. I want him to have a health rdg. He may have already written you except that he can’t write legibly and therefore hardly ever does. He is my mad Texan who is managing the Carmerson deal. He is completely enatie [?]. I had a rdg. about him in Rye [2174-4] - Myers & Marquess - look it up. Call him up at Essex House & say I said to if you do not hear from him - any way be nice to him. He is devoted to me (by the way) as a contact. I think you will see his quality.
“We progress but it is a mad house some of the time. Hold your thanks and your thoughts for us. We have thirty two children.”
R18. 8/10/42 EC’s wire: “Much impressed with Marquess. Do you feel my making a trip to Texas now could possibly aid the situation?”
R19. 8/11/42 Reply by wire: “Seeing Marquess Washington Wednesday night will know more then.”
R20. 8/27/42 EC’s ltr. to [2174]: “Two weeks or more ago when Mr. Marquess first showed up here, was never more surprised in my life. Felt possibly you had sent him or suggested he come. Glad he came to ask me only one question, and that was a funny one - asked if I knew Edgar B. Davis - and when I said yes he said well that is all I wanted to know. Then he wired me to come to Texas last week. I arrived in Gladewater early in the morning he met me and took me over the East Texas field including the new one at the north and west of the Carmerson property, then we drove over that, went to Tyler and had dinner then he drove me back to Gladewater and I left on the afternoon train, got back here Tuesday evening late, as stopped to see folks in Tenn. and Ky. Today had wire from him asking for me to tell him if he had the right location for the operations, as he is moving in on same this or next week. Don’t know what he will have for me to do next, but said you and I would have to meet him in Memphis or he would come on here.
“So there you are. Now this is all crazy - but I just love being crazy. Years ago when the Co. [Cayce Petroleum Company
- see [3777] series] as had my name failed, a reading said one day the way it could have been successful will come back to you - so when saw it was a certain Co. paying my expenses to travel - it being the same well I went. So do not know what is happening, but something is on the way.
“How are you? How is the school coming and how is everybody? Would like to see you and talk it all over, but the well may be in before we have a chance - for feel sure it will come in this time.
“Let me hear from you.”
R21. 8/27/42 See 1561-20.
R22. 9/1/42 See 1561-21.
R23. 9/15/42 EC’s ltr. to [2174]: “Thanks for yours of the 11th - had wire from Mr. Marquess asking me to go to … to see you and to take the maps he gave me. Did not know what for - wire yesterday asking that I meet him in N.Y. before the 22nd
- wired him the 18 or 19th would suit me best or the 20th. Letter from him today dated the 13th said another field had come in west of the property you are interested in - and when could I meet him in N.Y.?
“Now about [1208]. Guess Miss [288] has written you - His mother [934] has gone back on everything she said, and is not willing for him to leave so that is that. Why some things aren’t different and why some people do as they do can’t ever say - but who am I to judge.
“Mrs. Cayce is in Ky. first time she has been home in two years or more. Sally is looking after the place, she seems to be getting on fine is expecting the little stranger the first weeks of Oct. We are being kept busy - haven’t had as yet as many requests for the special edition of book as had hoped. Am sure there are several hundred who intend to buy but for some reason the notice didn’t take effect at once - they will want it am just egotist enough to believe, for so many have said so that haven’t heard from and the time is up now this week - but believe H. L. wrote you or did he?
“If come to N.Y. suppose will see you hope so anyway if it is possible. IF IF they drill that well am sure your school will have all the funds it will need.
“Write me with love to all - how is the young man [2607]?”
R24. 10/19/42 [2174]‘s ltr. to EC: “Well - my dear, its a long time since I have written but things have been most particularly busy. Launching a school is somewhat of a job as I have found out. But all is going amazingly well - it is really more beautiful and successful than we had dreamed. You could not imagine a happier and busier group of children than we have.
“It is TRAGIC that [1208] is not with us. Is there someway in which his mother could SEE it. How can a person know what it is like unless they see it? Even we who should have known did not realize what it was going to be. He will come through sometime.
“One of the most exciting things is the way the children have [fit] into the farm work. We are now organized into groups and do apple picking - corn husking - grape picking - potato digging. We have taken picture!! And then to have the president say that that is what high school children could & should do - and we had been doing it all along.
“Oh there are small headaches but they are getting worked out one by one.
“We have a fine kitchen staff and the FOOD IS GOOD. Most of the children have gained from 3 - 8 lbs!!! 48 children! The lower school is full. They are a darling group of 12 children and they come up every day to lunch - piling in out of the station wagon.
“How about Texas. They seem to be hung up on court probate on the Startus land. Oh dear - I do wish they could get on with it. Something will come out of Texas the question is when.
“And now this morning the news from Sally & Hugh Lynn. And I want more details of course.
“A word from you would be cheering.”
R25. 10/23/42 EC’s ltr. to [2174]: “Just lovely to have yours of the 19th - have thought of you quite often, yet felt all was going well, but am really happy to hear such grand news from you as to just how it is all going. Am glad you are pleased with the progress of things thus far. Can’t imagine a more ideal place for a school with all the surroundings to make the place ideal, then the spirit of those in charge their ideals and purposes. How fortunate it seems to me every one is that are privileged to have their children under such an environment.
“Am sure each child is happy and just hope each instructor sees their ideals working in the lives of the pupils.
“I could never put into words how disappointed I was that [1208] didn’t start off with you there, and the less I say about those things as caused the change in the attitude of the Mother possibly will be better, but the father [391] is now in England, while true they are separated, yet that fact possibly had much to do with her decision of not sending him at this time. Maybe he will come just hope so for his sake.”
R26. 11/23/42 She requested a Check Life Reading on a problem as follows:
“You will have before you the entity, [2174], born …, August 28, 1890, in Canton, New York, who now seeks a Check Life Reading with information, advice and guidance specifically regarding a situation which has arisen in … School, …, New Hampshire, centering around …, a member of the faculty. You will correlate the past associations of the entity with […], and advise what they are working out now. You will answer the questions that may be asked:
- As […]‘s personal problems have become an integral part of this community, both socially and academically, it is obvious I must move. What can be done to better her relations with the faculty?
- Can I help the situation with her husband and son?
- There have been fears of an unbalance. Is there danger?
- Can she be worked into a more complete asset to the school?
- Can anything release her abnormal necessity for cleanliness?
- Should I move directly and give her a picture of herself as others see her, or will life otherwise take care of the situation?
- In either case, what should my fundamental attitude be?
“The problem of the Rdg. is very complex and goes deep and long ago even in this life. It is not just a school problem. Since it was hurled at me when the […]‘s first came over and now it is here again, it seems to be partly mine. Mrs. […] has certain similarities to Miss […]. How they follow me. It’s interesting - not easy.”
