This Psychic Reading given by Edgar Cayce at his home on Arctic Crescent, Virginia Beach, Va., this 29th day of December, 1940, in accordance with request made by the mother - Mrs. [1306], Associate Member of the Ass”n for Research & Enlightenment, Inc.
[Edgar Cayce; Gertrude Cayce, Conductor; Gladys Davis, Steno.]
Time of Reading 11:10 to 11:25 A. M. Eastern Standard Time. …, Ky.
-
GC: You will give the physical condition of this body at the present time, with suggestions for further corrective measures; answering the questions, as I ask them:
-
EC: Yes - some little better from the acute conditions, which as we find have arisen from overacidity and the general strain that makes for the glandular disturbance with the throat, chest and bowels.
-
In the present, we would first give half a teaspoonful of Milk of Bismuth with six drops of Elixir of Lactated Pepsin in same.
-
Then, within an hour, begin with the broken doses of Castoria. Give ten drops every thirty minutes.
-
When this has been given for about three to four hours (keep this up afterward, but) begin with six to eight drops of Syrup of Squill, about every two hours apart; but keep up the Castoria until there are full eliminations.
-
Start the eliminations well by giving a douche or enema, using body-temperature water, of course, with Glyco-Thymoline in same; this to be given after about the first to second hour of giving the Castoria, see?
-
Massage the throat and chest with Camphorated Oil, followed with the Musterole - this of course weak strength for children of this age, and this especially over the sides of the glands of the throat, and will be well if this is massaged also across the stomach.
-
Keep the feet warm by massaging them with warm sweet oil or Camphorated Oil, and keep them wrapped well.
-
As to the feeding, - let there be little of those things hard to assimilate. Use rather the regular foods, but not too much of same.
-
These are the better conditions for the body.
-
We are through for the present.

Reports
Reports & Follow-up
R1. 12/30/40 Mother [1306]‘s letter reported on her own reading, then:
”…Now about [2299]. For a week or two he hasn’t seemed to feel extra good. His bowels weren’t moving quite as much as usual so I gave him Castoria in broken doses for at least a week without results. Each day he seemed to be more constipated. I then tried giving him a teaspoonful at nite the next nite a teaspoon and one half with no Castoria passing. I’ve rubbed him so regular I had no idea he could be catching cold but Saturday he seemed to have a little anyway - nose running a little. I had also given him a Glyco enema twice and all the results I got were a few hard knots.
On Saturday about noon Mother held him in her lap while I gave him another enema. He had temperature of 103 4/5 so I thought it was caused from both his bowels and catching a cold. I had just finished the enema when Mother told me to look at his eyes. We called his name with no response. His eyes set back in his head so I ran next door to a phone to get a Dr. - [1352] came after me and said he was bent back like a bow, rigid, and quivering. It was evidently a spasm. I couldn’t get a Dr. immediately (the flu epidemic here had them all booked up for 3 or 4 hours.) so called in a married girl friend. She bathed him in tepid soda water and followed with an alcohol rub. He laid on the bed the rest of the afternoon almost lifeless except once in a while he’d cry a little. I got hold of [1089] and asked him to wire for a reading. I knew Miss Gladys was away but took a chance on her being back by Saturday. I was still giving him about 15 drops Castoria every 15 minutes. About 6 o’clock Dr. Harvey Stone came by. He said that he was suffering mostly from cold but as soon as he examined his stomach and bowels he said there was something wrong with them. He said his stomach was too large and his body too small. He thinks he has one of two baby diseases which are very rare, he’d have to read up on it. He called it an enlarged colon. Do you think maybe it might be? If a reading were given at the time of an emergency, would it show anything but the immediate trouble? [2299]‘s bowel movements are extremely large around even when they’re not real firm. I’ve said something to Mother several times about it and she says she never saw a baby have movements like [2299], such a quantity and size too. What do you think “about it? Dr. Harvey [Harvey Stone, M.D.] gave me a prescription Sulphamilimide [?] I’m guessing how to spell it - I’ve only heard it pronounced - maybe you can understand what I mean. The first two powders came up as soon as he swallowed them, but before I got the reading he had taken five of them - one every 3 hours - I still had two left but of course didn’t give them to him. He seemed lots better Sunday morning but that afternoon his temperature was up again and has been ever since. About 4 o’clock this morning it went down but came back a short time later. I gave him the Castoria until about 5 o’clock this morning After giving him the enema when suggested in the reading he seemed completely emptied but continued the Castoria til later thinking it might help and couldn’t hurt him. He’s sleeping now but breathes awfully fast and is awfully hot. The temperature is worrying me. The reading didn’t say to rub him with the oil and Musterole more than once but I have
- is that right? Am still giving the Syrup of Squill every two hours.
“Maybe the temperature will be gone by tomorrow morning - if not I’ll let you know soon.
“Every member of the family has had or is having flu except [2036]. I don’t know how she got away with that! She’s had an abscessed tooth and tremendous pain, though. I still have a terrible sore throat and cold and too - I caught mine first
- the Sunday before Christmas.
“I do hope all of you are well. The weather here has been terrible - rainy and semi-cold. More rain predicted for this week.
“Cousin Edgar, I want to thank you again for helping me - I know you were taking a rest and hated terribly to be the one to disturb you. I’m sending this airmail so you’ll hear from me a little sooner. I know you’ve wondered what was wrong. “I’ll rite again soon…”
R2. 1/2/41 EC’s letter in re [1306]‘s own reading, then:
“Now for [2299] - don’t like the looks of the report from the Dr. - believe you should let the Dr. try out the Sulphamilimide [?]. I believe that is somewhere near right with the spelling - but it will have to be under the Dr’s care and attention for that is the most powerful drug that has been compounded for many a day - and would not mix the others up with it until after he has given that a fair trial
- it of course is for a definite condition - and let’s see what happens. But please let me know what comes about and how he gets along - but keep just to what the Dr. tells you about this for if he knows what he is doing and what he thinks is the trouble, it should work out.
“Please know am not trying to shirk anything - but am anxious about the baby and his welfare.
“So let me hear at least once a week - and if he doesn’t get rid of the fever soon, we will see that the reading says about it all.
“Hope you are soon feeling lots better and the baby too.
“Give my love to all and let me hear regularly, please…”
R3. 1/6/41 Mother, [1306]‘s letter to EC: “I received both your letters and was so glad to hear from you.
“I didn’t call the Dr. for [2299] again until Wednesday night. I repeated the reading Tuesday thinking it might help but he continued to run a temperature and was simply lifeless. His breathing seemed awfully fast and hard so Wednesday nite I called Dr. Harvey [Harvey Stone, M.D.]. [2299]‘s temperature had reached almost 104. He told me to have the prescription refilled and positively not to give him any milk - only orange juice and water. I didn’t tell him I hadn’t finished the other powders, but not knowing anything else to do (and I knew something had to be done then) I had the prescription refilled. It wasn’t hard to keep him off milk because he wouldn’t take over half an ounce at a time anyway and very little orange juice. The powders helped him but when I finished on Saturday morning at 3 o’clock his temperature came up again. So late Saturday afternoon I called the Dr. again. And then too, [2299] had developed a terrible cough - looked like he tried not to, but couldn’t keep it. The Dr. said to sponge him off and give him an enema and for his cough to burn a croup cup with tincture of Benzoin in it. The bath and enema reduced his fever and his cough got better after using the croup cup. He seems to feel lots better today - doesn’t have any temperature but is still coughing an awfully lot. The Syrup of Squill must loosen the phlegm. I’ve been giving that to him also. He’s awfully weak and has, naturally, lost weight, but is feeling lots better. I rub him every nite with the Camphorated Oil and Musterole. It is evidently helping. I rubbed him twice one day and nearly blistered him. He screamed and pulled at himself for 5 or 1O minutes that night. His bowels are still knotty and hard. They’ve only moved two or three times (natural movements) since I wrote you. I wonder what’s causing that. He had a small movement last nite, hard like the others, and today hasn’t had a movement - it’s about 4 o’clock so will give him an enema before bedtime. Today is the first time he’s had any baby food for about 2 weeks. I gave him a can of meatless soup and one slice zwieback with enough milk to soften it. He’s had orange juice several times.
“I’ll rite again soon and tell you how he’s doing. Then, when he gets over the flu, if possible, I’d like to get another reading, (at your convenience) and ask some questions about his stomach and bowels, etc…”
R4. 1/16/41 Mother, [1306]‘s letter to EC: “Received your letter Monday and was so glad to hear from you. Am so sorry both you and Cousin Gertrude are ill and hope you are better now.
“[2299] hasn’t had any temperature since I wrote you. I have been feeding him his regular diet since last Tuesday a week ago. Have been giving him mostly carrots, soups and the fruits - Gerber’s. Until today his movements have been hard and dry even after giving him both Castoria and Castor Oil. They seem some softer now but still formed. I haven’t called the Dr. anymore. I thought if I got a reading a little later I’d know for sure whether there was a disease of the bowels or not. The Drs. do treat cases lots of times when they’re wrong. I had such terrible experiences with them for [2299] until I got a reading. Have I told you? [2299] has four teeth now! He still can’t walk without someone holding both his hands, seems to be too weak or something. Do you think he’s just slow, or there might be something wrong with his legs?
“Maybe I worry unnecessarily but I see other children his age walking so well…”
