GC: You will give the physical condition of this body at the present time, with suggestions for further corrective measures; answering the questions, as I ask them:
-
EC: Yes.
-
There is still a great deal of congestion in throat and head.
-
We would use closer the fumes of the croup cup as indicated.
-
About two hours apart we would give internally one drop of Compound Tincture of Benzoin in a little water or honey, until the cough is alleviated - or until the phlegm in head and throat has cleared.
-
Keeping up all the rest of the applications suggested, we find that these offer the better conditions for the body.
-
Keep massaging with the Mutton Tallow, Turpentine and Camphor compound; back of the head, along with spine, across the face and nose, you see.
-
Be sure to keep up the intestinal antiseptic (the Glyco- Thymoline) for the drainage to the stomach and bowels. Of course, this will be hard upon this particular system owing to the tenderness through same.
-
We are through for the present.
Copy to Mother - Wired also as follows: ” ” Ass’n

R1. 3/10/41 Letter from “Cousin” Edgar to [1306]: “Thanks for yours of the 6th - can finally appreciate what a strain you have been and are under, do hope [2299] is on the improve and know this, [1306], don’t feel that you are ever a bother or that you may ask too often for a reading for yourself or [2299], is a compliment to me that you have the faith and confidence in the rdgs., and give praise to God that the suggestions have been helpful. I know and you know that of myself I can do nothing, only as HE may work in and through me and you can feel (I hope) as Father [2019] said when he had his reading:- ‘I realize God again speaks to man, through a man’ may it always be that way had like that. Keep up the good fight and am sure that as is best will come to you, know you are worn out for there is nothing I know of as trying as having a sick baby on your hands - God Bless every one of them.
“Do hope he is much better - and you are being able to get bit of much needed rest - yes it is hard not to be able to do some of the things we may wish to do - even to going to Mass or Church, but service for the love of others and of those committed to our care, is God’s work as much as attending service at some stipulated place. Am of the opinion that it is - Why we do a thing - that counts for HE knows the purposes of our hearts, man and even our own family may see only the outward appearance.
“Write when ever you find the chance - know am always glad to hear. May HIS strength be yours as you need it, for there you know you can ever depend for HE gives without stint, and always with LOVE.
“Love to each of you.”
R2. 3/18/41 Letter from [1306] to “Cousin” Edgar: “Received both your letter and the last rdg. Thurs. of last week - which I appreciate a great deal.
“I have wanted to write you every day but have been with [2299] so closely morning and night. I’ve had an abscessed tooth for over a week and simply can’t get relief with anything - am going to dentist as soon as I can leave [2299] for awhile - He’s such a little angel, hasn’t been out of our room since being sick and wants to go in the other part of the house so bad. He’s sleeping pretty good at night not but still has such a terrible cough. His head much hurt him something awful because every time he starts to cough he puts his hands to his head and usually cries too. I’m rubbing his forehead, nose, neck, chest, and back very night with the mutton tallow mixture.
“Cousin Edgar, after I got the last rdg. by telegram on Mon.
- we carried it out until Wed. afternoon - [2299] broke out with a terrible rash all over his body - couldn’t rest for the itching it caused. We didn’t know what caused it but thot maybe it was the honey - still don’t know what did it. I wanted so badly to get another rdg. but simply couldn’t ask for the FOURTH one. Mother said I’d have to either ask, or get a Dr. so I called Dr. Harvey Stone (who got home Sun.) - thought he might do something without having to bother you again - (I know you don’t mind but still its asking SO MUCH of you) - I know it’s a strain on you every time you give one and I hate to ask to much, however, of course, [2299] was improving greatly since he was first sick - without the rdgs. he’d very probably have had pneumonia and couldn’t have stood that. Anyway Dr. Harvey [Harvey Stone, M.D.] gave one of the sulphurmilamide compound, orally, and then a cough syrup containing squill, ipecac, and I don’t know what else. I feel like the sulphurmilamide compound was useless by mouth because the rdg. said injections and I believe it said that because his stomach evidently can’t handle the medicine. His cough is, of course, some better but I feel should be almost gone had we kept up the honey and benzoine but didn’t know what was causing the breaking out. I’m starting it again this afternoon - it might still help, even if a few days has lapsed since he had it. What do you think? I had the Dr. two days but didn’t see that he was helping at all. He said [2299] was better. But haven’t called him since. I am still giving him Glyco - his bowels moved without enemas both yesterday and today - hasn’t had much to eat but doesn’t want anything. I’ve cooked oats or cream of wheat every day and he takes one bite and quits - has had a coddled egg three days and nothing else except zwieback and milk and orange juice - takes very little milk - about 3 ozs. at a time. He’s falled off ‘til he’s nothing but skin and bones - looks pitiful but seems to have a lot of pep, but is too weak to do much. Do you have any suggestions as to his diet, or would you just gradually get back on the same one? I though you might know something to help build him more quickly.
“I’m almost afraid to take him out of this room - afraid he’ll take more cold. His cough is what worries me so. I’ll give him a little Squill off and on - that may help.
“Do hope all of you are well now.
“Will let you hear from me again soon.”
Love, [1306]
P.S. “Cousin Edgar, what do you think about Malted Milk or Mellon’s Food to help fatten [2299] or do you think he could handle either?”
R3. 3/24/41 Letter from [1306] to EC: “I’m writing again because I’m so terribly worried about [2299]. It looks as if he simply can’t pull out of the rut he was in. I wonder if maybe we didn’t keep the poultices on him long enough. I dressed him Sat. and carried him in other parts of the house for a short time - did the same Sun. - this morning I took him to the kitchen for breakfast - he ate almost a whole coddled egg and the fat from some crisp bacon and drank his milk. He seems to be hungry enough - always tickled when I bring his food in but after he starts eating he gags on everything - oats, cream of wheat, zwieback, veg. or anything I try to give him. When he tries to swallow food he gets choked and usually vomits what he takes. I can’t imagine what’s wrong. Naturally it frightens him and he stops eating
- wants his milk - which he does retain - won’t take orange juice at all. I’ve been putting cod liver tablets in his food but of course he gets little of that and Sat. I started the lactated pepsin - todays the third day for it.
“I’m still rubbing him with the mutton tallow mixture every night like I told you - his whole back, chest, and neck (front and back) then, when he goes to sleep I rub his forehead and nose for about 20 min. so I’ll be sure it goes in and still, he’s full of cold. In fact, this morning he looks as if he might be getting worse again. Nose and eyes running and coughing and wheezing an awful lot. I wonder if you have any suggestions to make. I just don’t know what to do. If only there was some way to prevent him from taking cold so easily. What do you think causes him to gag and vomit on most all his food? Could it be the phlegm in his throat? He still breaks out with the rash I spoke of in my last letter - it doesn’t stay long just goes and comes. Has quite a few yellow looking pimples broken out on his scalp which worry him considerably. I believe it must be caused from his stomach. I put 1 teas. of lime water in each bottle of his milk. If it weren’t for that he might be covered with rash all time.
“Cousin Edgar, I’ll deeply appreciate any suggestions you may make. I’m only too glad and willing to try anything you say because I know you wouldn’t make them without knowing they’re right. Maybe I worry unnecessarily - I hope so. He just doesn’t seem to get any better without dropping back again.”
R4. 3/27/41 Letter from EC to [1306]: “Glad to have yours of the 24th - sorry tho that [2299] is having such a time of it, think you would find it well to use the Poultice any time when he is choked up - put it over his throat - or even on his head down as close over his nose as you can well do without getting it in his eyes - think you will find it will loosen up that cold, maybe too, [1306], you keep him too close, that can be you know - not that would take chances in getting him out - but he needs fresh air. Try it when ever the weather permits but wrap him up extra good.
“Keep up the rubs - know that will help, too bad about his food - think tho a little poultice over his throat will help that - but sounds like it was more in his head - so when he closes the throat to swallow it gags him try it both ways.
“Use carbolated vasoline on those places in scalp - think that will dry them up and help him keep his hair also.
“Let me hear how he comes along - and if necessary will check up you know, have been very uneasy about him tho, but do hope as the weather improves and you are able to get him out - it will do both of you good.”
