This Psychic Reading given by Edgar Cayce at his office, 115 West 35th Street, Virginia Beach, Va., this 11th day of January, 1926, in accordance with request made by self - Mr. [257].

Born April 22, 1893, in Lexington, Ky. Time of Reading 10:15 A. M. Eastern Standard Time. New York City.

1. GC: You will have before you [257], who was born April 22, 1893, in Lexington, Ky., and you will give the relation of this entity and the Universe, and the Universal Forces, giving the conditions that are as personalities, latent and exhibited in the present life. Also the former appearances in the earth’s plane, giving the time, the place, and the name, and that in that life which built or retarded the development for the entity, giving the abilities of the present entity and that to which it may attain, and how. You will also answer the questions I will ask you regarding this.

2. EC: Yes, we have the entity here, and those relations with the Universe and Universal Forces, as are latent and exhibited in the present personality of the entity, with those appearances in the earth’s plane and that which retarded or developed the entity, and that to which the entity may attain, under these influences, in the present earth’s plane, and how. For we find the appearances have builded more in the individuality, which shows or shines through the personality of the entity in the present earth’s plane. And while those influences in the planetary conditions are exhibited, this will show also the influence of will’s force, as has been applied in the earth’s plane. Those relations, then, with earth’s forces and spiritual forces as are manifest in the entity:

We find the position in the present earth’s plane taken from those of Mercury, Jupiter, with those influences in Uranus, in Neptune, with those of the conditions that present the adverse forces in Saturn and AT TIMES in Venus. Then, from these and under these influences, we find these as personalities, as exhibited in the present entity:

4. One that is mentally efficient, in that even beyond the theoretical conditions of the entity’s welfare.

5. One that is ennobled in all of the theoretical, or in the experiences of the entity’s dealing with the peoples, as groups or individuals.

6. One that shows a love of home and of family.

7. One often in that position of adoration with those of opposite sex, yet one whose influence should be deferred in that marital relation until at least the thirty-eighth year in the life. While those influences as have passed have brought those relations near to consummation, the entity realizes at present that better condition in self and in surroundings by not being in that position.

8. One of integrity.

9. One of truth.

10. One that is ever drawn to those mystic forces, in word, in deed, in action of those that may be, or are possessed with that influence wherein the occult or spiritualistic forces may be manifest in any manner in the physical phenomena of phenomenized forces of an unseen world. These influences bring to the life those influences that give an exceptional experience to the mental abilities of the entity, and when kept in that way and manner as to USE same, and not ABUSE same, may be beneficial to the entity in every phase of the entity’s development and sojourn in the present earth’s plane, for we shall see, through the appearances, that influence in past existences and HOW the influence of same may be used in the present plane.

11. One who will have much worldly goods, and this, as we see, begins in the thirty-second, thirty-third, thirty-fourth, reaching the highest of the earning capacity in thirty-fifth year; though NOT as the high amount of monies will be in the hands or control of entity at that period, but the EARNING power from the physical; the earning power afterwards being from the mental and the experience gained, see?

12. The better times for deals for entity of every character, one that four always plays an important part, and is as a weakness. Three being the ennobling, or the greater part of the entity’s numerical, mystic or psychic forces of numbers. Then, on the third day of week best, third of month, third as years, third of the various experiences, as will be seen has brought the greater changes for the good.

13. One that is considered by many as persistent, yet (third) persistency has brought the greater successes, fourth has proven detrimental. In the uses, then, of numbers to the entity in their mystic, as may be termed from a physical viewpoint, which is as of a truth from the spiritual viewpoint: One, three, five, seven, nine, being any numbers that are of the greater influence in life. NEVER SPECULATE, then, in any that does not have such numbers in their quota, see?

14. As to days, these are rather as numbers than of those of days, for they merely represent numbers to the physical mind.

15. One that is in that way of gaining much developments in the present earth’s plane.

16. One whose greater powers in earning monies will be from those effects of earth’s storehouse, or in the manufacturing and selling of those THINGS made from products of earth’s storehouse, as, especially, in wood, or wood and metal.

17. One that will find that the greater influence in life is in that of SERVICE to all.

18. One that is considered AT TIMES over talkative, even to self’s detriment. This not true. In the sense, were these experiences of entity balanced in that manner that the use of words applied in a more normal, or nominal, rather than extravagant, this would prove, and DOES prove and HAS PROVEN, beneficial, in word, in deed, in GAINING that attention that is necessary for self to be felt. Be sure before the word is spoken that self does not meet that same again and it not appear as spoken.

19. One that may attain POLITICAL influence, yet, as has been given, the greater blessings may come to entity through applying salesmanship (of which the entity is most at present master) to those of commodities made, manufactured, prepared from those of nature’s or earth’s, or of wood or of metal, or a combination. The conditions in these will be seen from that influence as has been seen in the entity’s EXPERIENCES in the earth’s plane, for these have been many.

20. One who will, with the care of the physical (and particular stress may be made upon this), enjoy the fruits of earthly labors, ONLY THROUGH the very particular attention to the preserving of the vitality of the body, after the forty- eighth or ninth year, see? [GD’s note: A cancerous condition began in his late forties which threatened and finally took his life in his 74th year.] [See 257-220, etc.]

21. One that will, and does, in the present plane bring much pleasure, of many natures and characters, to those whom the entity contacts. Then how much more does it become necessary that entity yields that influence that each entity contacted may think better of him or herself and have a higher conception of their ability to cooperate with the Creator, in that which must be accomplished by man. For as is seen and as has been given, one (each entity) must give an account of every idle word spoken, see? To whom? To self and self’s service to others, and to the Creator of All Things. For we are co-operators with the divine forces as are seen, as are manifested in the physical world, that this entity loves the phenomena of so well.

22. As to appearances:

23. We find in the one before this in those days when the forces in this country, America, were in that of the Rebellion against the yoke [American Revolution], or against that as felt as persecution from the Mother Country. The entity then was in that of the aide to the General in the name of Howe, [aide to Gen. Sir William Howe], and then led those forces in the successful termination of those in the Eastern portion of the country, see? and from this there is gained much of the ability to act in the capacity of the general, or supervisor, and little of the ability to be subordinate to anyone, and the inability to take orders, save that the WHY and WHEREFORE of order accompany same.

24. One that may be easily led by right, but hard to be driven, even to RIGHT, unless first seen in self. This gained from these experiences, and in the present plane, as we see, makes the good soldier, in the Service. [GD’s note: He had become a Captain in World War One.]

25. In the one before this we find in the land along the Rhine, when those of the peoples were being driven back and forth by the invading forces from the South. The entity then in the name of Oblaob [Oblaub?], and the entity then gained much in its development in the earth plane in the stability of the entity in leading and in giving hope, strength, to others, in speech and in service; rising from that position of the farm labor to that of the leader in putting down those invasions. The entity gaining, then, in this experience that of the love of speech, the love of the ability to hold others’ attention; the inclination for exaggeration at times coming from the will of the entity in PUSHING UP at the time, see? though a development through that period.

26. In the one before this we find in the land of the Saracens, when the Son of Man walked in that land, and the entity was in the group who saw those works as were accomplished through that manifestation of the Universal Forces as phenomenized in the earth’s plane at the time. In the name then Soshiel, and in the study given to that as was experienced, the entity both lost and gained, for the love of that phenomenized force is latent and exhibited in the present earth’s plane. The fault lay in the application of that plane. Hence that, as has been given, as to the applying of those urges as are seen in the entity’s forces of phenomena of occult and mystic force as come under and are experienced by the entity in the present earth’s plane.

27. In the one before this we find in those days when the walls of the Holy City were being repaired under that direction of Ezekiel, and the entity coming in, then, from that of the King in exile [Jehoiachin, Zedekiah, Nebuchadnezzar period?], and was then the assistant to Ezekiel, as the Scribe [Ezek. l-48], and the entity gained in that plane, for under the tutelage, the power of the force as was manifest in Israel, the entity assisted much to those who labored on the wall, who defended the helpless from the invasions of those who would hinder. Then in the name of Abidda, and the urge in the present is that closeness as is felt to all things sacred, as worshipful by any people, in any clime, in any place; yet the entity hasn’t ever been able to answer from within self in the present plane WHY, BUT THE ENTITY HOLDS THAT SACRED THAT OTHERS HOLD SACRED TO THEMSELVES INDIVIDUALLY. 28. In the one before this we find in that day when the divisions were in the rule in Egypt [10,500 B.C.], in the days of the Second Ruler, [Araaraart], when the division arose on account of those conditions as brought to bear in the Temple. The entity then was in that of the defense of that Priest Ra-Ta] driven into exile by the aggrandizement of self interest and of fleshly desires [See 294-l42—152]. The entity, though, remained in that position of being faithful. Hence the inner intent at times for the exaggeration of conditions, especially when they are felt at the moment beneficial; yet that injunction as has been given would ever be well: Weigh well that the words spoken, when met face to face again, will appear in that same light as was meant when spoken. The name in this - Arsha. [9/4/38 See 257-201 saying he also had been in Atlantis time of thought forms.]

29. The abilities to which, then, the entity may attain in the present sphere lie in the following out of those conditions as have been given, as have been outlined for the entity, in the manner, the nature, the character of earthly labors, ever remembering first: Service to others is the highest service to God. Ever keep self in that way and manner as to be able to answer for the faith that lies within. Ever be in that way of using all force as is manifest before the entity to the glorification of God rather than of self, for the application of self is self’s reflection of the God worshiped. Ready for questions.

30. (Q) What should the body do during the present year regarding the business? (A) As has been given to the entity, stay in that position of being able to dictate rather than be dictated to; that is, never confine self to the place wholly of dictation from some other. That is, never work for a straight salary, see? and always have that position as of being able to gain for self the fruits of the labors of self. We would stay in those places wherein the endeavors are being given, though there will be many other places offered, these will build, and let SERVICE be a portion of the commodities as will be given to the entity as the expansions begin. Expand this in many channels, especially in that of SERVICE to the INDIVIDUAL USERS of the commodities or goods as manufactured. First in close, then in the surrounding countries, see?

31. (Q) What specific request should the entity make of the firm for his financial benefit? (A) As given, the ability to expand, YET to be able to RECEIVE from the efforts of the entity.

32. (Q) What investment should he make this year to give him financial independence, and on what date? (A) This may be reached from the many various ways and manners as have been outlined. Take any stock, any commodity, the name of same, the number of same, the position of same, that occupies that place as has been given in the numerical forces and apply in same.

33. We are through for the present.

EGYPTIAN PERIOD

Here the entity is found in the following relationship: - “Arsha, time when divisions arose on account of conditions arising in temple. Entity then of priesthood, and offering strange fire upon the altar. Was in defense of the priest driven into exile by aggrandizement of self-interest and fleshly desires; entity though remaining faithful. Hence inner urge and intent at times to exaggerate conditions especially when it is felt beneficial at the moment; yet weigh well with the words spoken, so that when met again face to face they will appear in the same light as meant when spoken.” (Life Reading, 257-10)

The entity then was very close to Edgar Cayce during this period, Cayce being the priest driven into exile. At the present time there is that strong attachment, which has persisted, as before, in spite of ill luck and painful circumstance. Personally there is strong faith and support of Edgar, with continual mentioning that he always comes first. Also from this comes the spiritual attitude, the love of ritual and the love of Mrs. Cayce as wife of Edgar, through relationship with her in the temple. The retarding influences as seen are the urge for exaggeration and the urge as presented in the phrase “burned strange fire upon the altar.” These are to be overcome.

At that time [900] was a scribe of the conquered people, who was taken by the conquerors and rose to a high position in the favor of that king who is now Hugh Lynn Cayce (Life Readings of H.L.C. and [900]). There is then, a latent antagonism as respects this man, in his relations with Hugh Lynn and these combined against the entity and Edgar Cayce. There is respect for the abilities of [900], without a complete understanding of his religious and ethical codes. To you he is, at the present time, a conservative element, holding to the king and counsellers, as it were - just as he did then, for now he holds to the philosophical and metaphysical angle rather than that of business. Try to understand his feelings in this respect, and approach him from a not too business-like angle. Respect the ideals and dreams he cherishes about the work and do not jar them with too much “shop-talk.”

There was no outstanding relationship to [5453] or [641] at this time, though [5453] was in the same role he occupies now, and was a common good to all factions, being disliked by none. [136] was probably associated with Mrs. Cayce in the temple service before the division, but does not appear prominently until it was all smoothed over, being in later life companion to [900]. There seems no reason for antagonism to her, except as companion then and now to [900].

[419] was a builder at this time, being-associated with [195], the head builder of the pyramids. [419] favored the priest at the division, and although probably there was no connection in the present he evidently likes the entity [257] and Edgar very much, and it will be natural that they like him.

[195] was head builder of the pyramids, but it seems there was no connection, though an urge to respect the same abilities as manifested in [195] now may be present.

[165] was a power at the time, and appeared as the father of Hugh Lynn and first invading king. He pitted Hugh Lynn against [900], and in the present he will co-operate with Hugh Lynn and feel that [900] is incapable in many ways. He was older than the others in this period, and perhaps looked with amused tolerance on the general scramble. Now he is fatherly to all, and ever ready to help and advise and listen to troubles. He would look on [257] as sort of a prodigal son, sympathizing and attempting to co-operate. Yet he is interested in many things besides business, and will best be approached by Hugh Lynn on all such matters. Also, he will be suspicious at times of the old urge in entity [257] to “burn strange fire on the altar.” There is more of this relationship as will be seen in later appearances.

Mrs. [760] was the daughter of [165], and decorated and trimmed the temple. The association was probably pleasant, and there is no reason for antagonism now.

As to [288] there may be conflicting urges. As the child of Edgar and Gertrude she may have represented to you the cause of all the trouble, yet as the same offspring she may have been loved by you through association with her parents. In the present it seems you would like her in a way, yet at times see her as the cause of some obstruction or trouble, and become impatient and prejudiced. It might be well to watch this.

Your son, [759], at that time came later, as he does now. He will have trouble adjusting himself perhaps, as he did then; but can be brought up to eliminate such trouble entirely.

[2709] will work well with you and Mr. Cayce, as in this period he co-operated with Edgar and those in banishment, and was directly responsible for the reunion and reconciliation of forces. He can help others to help themselves, rather than be of direct assistance, but before he is broached discover what line he is most interested in. The attitude of this man has been changed by later appearances, but his abilities are in this direction, if he can attune himself properly, as he did then.

Dr. [204] appeared after the trouble had been settled, and went to the layman as interpreter of the truths learned. This man will work with most anyone, provided he is handled with diplomacy. He will be a great factor, for he has the faculty of being able to teach what he believes.

Miss [5673] at that time was as she is now, and can be looked to for sympathy and help. This relationship gains effect in the next appearance.

[2694] then was a mediator between the king and the banished priest, and from this appearance gains much ability as a go-between and settler of disputes. He will be affable to all at all times, and will be valuable as a go-between when it is difficult for the entity to approach someone in person due to antagonism.

The brother of [641] mentioned above, [391], does not enter in this period nor ever contacted later with the entity [257].

[849] at that time led a revolution of the natives against the king. He was looked on then by the entity [257] as a rebel, and now there may be the same outlook, though admiration for the ability and dash of going after what is wanted; for it was almost successful at that time, and gone about in a different and more romantic way than the methods pursued by the banished priest and his followers. Approach him through his work, as he loves it and every urge from his past life is to write. Of all the members at the present, [900] can best approach him for anything desired, for in that period [900] was a native, and the man [849] planned to have as high priest if his revolution succeeded. As he then led the forces of the rebelling natives with the sword, so now he can lead with the pen the rebelling forces against ignorance and superstition; and with co-operation can succeed.

In summing up this period we find that the urges are good except for the desire to exaggerate and the urge to “burn strange fire on the altar.” This may be interpreted as a warning to subdue the business element with certain people. As a person is best approached so approach him.

FIRST PALESTINE PERIOD.

Here the entity entered as a captive, and was taken as scribe by Ezekial: -

“Abidda, coming in from exile, and as assistant to Ezekial as the scribe. Gained under the tutelage and power of force as manifest in Israel. Assisted much those who labored on the wall, who defended the helpless from invasions of those who would hinder. Present closeness felt to all things sacred, as worshipful by any people in any clime, in any place. Hasn’t been able to answer within himself WHY, but entity holds that sacred that others hold sacred to themselves individually.” (Life Reading - 257-10)

In this period there were few people of the present close association met, yet those met were ones closest now in the life and Association work. Here was met [903], appearing as a captive also, and learning much under teachings which may have come from the entity. There must have been association here, though [903] went away after a time, much helped by what she had learned.

Here is a period of great gain, and the happiness gained from that period may have influenced the entity to seek again association with those met in that period, especially [903]. Here Mrs. [5673] appears again, as the sister of the entity [257]. In the present as nurse of the hospital she will cooperate wonderfully with the entity and be of great help in carrying out the entity’s ideas regarding her work.

Unhindered by a negative Egyptian appearance [137] appears as armor-bearer to Ezekial. There is a closeness from this association, and a feeling through this association of being brothers in the same cause, servants in the same work. [900] also was in this same relationship, fighting with the entities [257] and [137], and he also will feel the urge of working for a common cause. Both can be well approached through this angle. Use it when there is misunderstanding.

[953] here worked on the walls, being defender of the south gate, and he from this will feel an urge to co-operate and work for common good and advancement.

But this man [953] in the Egyptian period counselled the banishment of the priest, and there is antagonism to the entity [257]. He is interested mostly in the archaelogical end of the work, and it will be best to let him alone and allow him to enter when the time comes ripe, through Hugh Lynn or some other whom he feels friendly towards. Yet from this Palestine appearance he will co-operate, once he has entered in the proper field and spirit.

[165] again-opposed the entity, storming the city as an invader. But [165] lost, and because he has since overcome this loss, there is no urge hanging over. [257] may feel the antagonism at times, or a feeling of mastery, but another appearance seems to have nullified this.

[136] appeared, but died as a child, causing no contact or urge.

SECOND PALESTINE PERIOD

(Time of Christ)

Then as a Saracen, and though believing, not gaining. “Soshiel, in the land of the Saracens when the Son of Man walked in that land, and the entity in that group that saw those works accomplished through the manifestation of the universal forces as phenomenized in the earth’s plane at that time. In the study given to that experienced entity gained and lost; for the love of that phenomenized force is latent and exhibited in the present. The fault lay in the application in that plane. Hence that as given as to the applying of those urges in the entity’s phenomena of occult and mystic forces as come under and are experienced by entity in the present, bring entity’s soul and spirit close to the worship of Jehovah, yet holding self ever afar from giving of its best to those natures.”

Here [341] appeared as a disciple, [137] as the flesh brother of Christ, Jude, and [953] as one of the lost. Probably none of these were contacted, yet urges may come to the two former in regards to the reading above, that entity [257] holds the best of himself aloof. This same retarding urge was seen in the Egyptian period, was overcome in the first Palestine period, and now is strong again. It will have to be overcome by putting the WORK FIRST - SELF SECOND.

GERMANY

Here the entity rose to a high position and gained, yet obtained a few harmful urges.

“Oblaob, in the land along the Rhine when the peoples were driven back and forth by invasions from the south. Entity gained much in the stability in leading and in giving hope and strength to others through speech and service; rising from the farm laborer to the leader in putting down these invasions. Gaining the love of speech, the love of ability to hold others’ attention; the inclination for exaggeration at times coming from the will of entity in pushing up at the time. A development through this period.” (Life Reading, 257-10)

This seems an important period, for it is almost alike in conditions to this one. Then there is repeated the urge for exaggeration, making it stronger and harder to overcome in the present. Also the love of speech, which combined with the love of exaggeration can be harmful. Keep the gain of this period, throw off the retarding urges. Let others talk, they love to, and it flatters their vanity. Talk when necessary, and your words will be listened to more closely and be more respected than if they were commonly heard. Do not exaggerate. This work is sufficently eloquent in its simple truth for any man.

Here were [903] and [487]. If any contact, it was congenial, and the present shows no antagonism.

ENGLAND AND THE UNITED STATES

“Aide to the general, in the name of Howe, when America was in rebellion against the yoke, or as they felt as persecution from the mother country. This entity led those forces in the successful termination of those in the eastern portion of the country, and from this there is gained much of the ability to act in the capacity as general, or supervisor, and little of the ability to be subordinate to anyone, and the ability to take orders very little, save that the why and wherefore of order accompany same.” (Life Reading, 257-10).

There was only one contact here, that being with [165], who was Benjamin Franklin. When Howe treated with Franklin the entity watched, and from this he respects and admires the shrewdness and capacity of the man. With [165] there can be great things done, for each respects the other, and they have been in three periods together. Two appearances with [900] have helped smooth their natural antagonism, and much can be accomplished together.

In a final summing up we see many good influences, aiding the entity to master conditions as arise and come out on top, with all he desires. Only three retarding urges, yet all three are strong because of re-occurrence in several periods. First the love to exaggerate. Second - the love of speech. Third the desire to “burn strange fire upon the altar.”

Overcome these, and there is hardly a thing left to do. Give, as the reading says - all of self to God - to Whom it all belongs.

A splendid fight, being well fought.

In a recent A.R.E. Staff Meeting the question arose: HOW SHOULD WE RESPOND WHEN OTHERS EXPRESS THEIR RELIGIOUS VIEWS IN OPPOSITION TO OURS? I am reminded of a quote from Life Reading 257-10, on 1/11/26, for a man who was told that he had been a scribe to Ezekiel.

257-10…in those days when the walls of the Holy City were being repaired…the entity assisted much to those who labored on the wall, who defended the helpless from the invasions of those who would hinder…and the urge in the present is that closeness as is felt to all things sacred, as worshipful by any people, in any clime, in any place…THE ENTITY HOLDS THAT SACRED THAT OTHERS HOLD SACRED TO THEMSELVES, INDIVIDUALLY. 257-10

For 45 years I was a witness to the truth of that statement about [257]. If you will listen to the Monitor Interviews, by Walter McGraw (A.R.E. Books & Tapes listed on p. 62), you will hear [257] answering the question about his religion (as a Jew) and Edgar Cayce’s (as a Christian), which went something like this:

“Why, Edgar Cayce never tried to change anybody’s religion! He tried to help you live up to your own religion!”
