This psychic reading given by Edgar Cayce at his home on Arctic Crescent, Va. Beach, Va., this 11th day of February, 1933, in accordance with request made by self, Mr. [269], new Associate Member of the Ass”n for Research & Enlightenment, Inc.

1. EC: Yes, we have the body here, [269]; this we have had before.

2. Now, as we find, there are some changes in the general physical forces of the body. In the material conditions, however, very little has been accomplished or done respecting the specific disturbance that prevents the body from responding nominally to all the functionings of the physical organisms; especially in reference to those conditions that exist in the Eustachian tube, that prevent the nominal or normal reaction to the sensory organism that functions through the auditory system.

3. There are still existent, as we find, those indications of there having been first those beginnings in a dry catarrhal condition, that affected the centers toward the inner ear; yet the greater distress is along the Eustachian tubes, and the filling or bending of these has tended to make for the thickening of tissue, which prevents the normal response to the inner ear for the normal reaction under the ordinary conditions.

4. The general health has improved somewhat, or the general physical conditions; but there is the necessity for the eliminations to be increased in the general system, as related to cold or congestion, while the applications are being made for the resuscitation of those portions that show the inactivity under the existent conditions in the body.

5. In meeting the needs of the conditions in the present, then:

We would cleanse those portions of the system through the throat, and also along the Eustachian tube; stimulating the centers in the cerebro-spinal system as to renew the vigor, energy, reaction and circulation to those portions that have been and are affected under these conditions. With the responses coming normally, there will be beneficial conditions and the return to a much NEARER normal reaction of the auditory forces of the body.

7. First we would cleanse the throat and tonsil area, as well as giving the proper consideration to the soft tissue, the antrums in face and nasal cavities that are affected by - and a contributory cause in the present to - the noises and the reactions in the system that are in excess of normalcy.

8. We would also correct through the manipulations, or change, the Eustachian tubes; by the operative measures in that called finger surgery, cleansing and stimulating same.

9. These will bring about the better conditions. A great number of treatments will not be required, but there will be required a specific CHARACTER of treatments; first for the cleansing, then for the active forces in the eustachian tubes proper; and the STIMULI, every second or third day, with the ultraviolet ray over those portions that are stimulated by the manipulative forces in the cervical and upper dorsal area.

11. (Q) How long at a time should the ultra-violet be applied? (A) From five to ten minutes about twice each week, PREFERABLY the same day - and just following - the treatments given in corrective and manipulative forces. This would be applied to the upper dorsal and cervical area.

12. (Q) Any advice regarding diet? (A) This had best be rather outlined as developments progress; for, as will be seen from the manipulations and adjustments, there will be a great deal of absorption to take place in the system. So, the eliminations must be increased, which should be as much by the manner and character of diet as by those forces that might be taken medicinally. Hence the diet would be altered or changed through, or by, the one giving those corrective measures.

Do these, as we find, and we will bring for this body, [269], a near normal condition in the active forces of the auditory system.

13. (Q) Is it best for the body to stay here, or can these treatments be gotten at home? (A) It is best that they be gotten where they may best be had; and, as we find, they may be had near here!

14. (Q) How long will it take? (A) This depends upon the responses to the applications. As we find, it would require some two weeks for the general adjustments, one or two weeks for the first operative forces and treatments. Then a rest period, and then AGAIN - for some three to four weeks - later, see?

15. We are through for the present.

R1. 2/21/33 EC’s letter to Dr. A. J. Foerter (M.D.):

“Right now I am having such an experience with a friend I met many years ago. While out going around the country (not seeking those I could devour, cheat or anything of the kind) I met him and his family, in central Pennsylvania. He sought information through a reading then, as he was getting very deaf but never followed the instructions. His daughter [[5763], no copy] also had a reading and she did follow hers, but it took two years to see the final results. Now he has decided to come here to ‘take his spanking.’ We have a man in Norfolk, a specialist in osteopathic finger surgery [M. L. Richardson], who is cooperating with the rdgs. Already he has performed the first operation, and there is a great deal of local work to be done on the nose and nasal passages, with finger surgery for the Eustachian tube, to prevent the inner ear from clogging. Of course, it will take a little time but the prospects are very good for a ninety percent cure, at least. If he had only done it beforehand!”

R3. 3/17/33 EC’s letter to Dr. A. J. Foerter, M.D.:

“Respecting the case here about which I wrote to you, it has a history or background just as many of the contacts we make from time to time. I don’t mean to enlarge on this too much, but merely to indicate that I recognize the unusual circumstances that so often surround a work of this nature and how often there may be some question marks after our attempts to interest others.

“A few years ago I met a man by the name of Rice [See 4945-2 in re Tex Rice], who was one of these high pressure salesmen and interested in floating An oil proposition in Texas. I became acquainted with him through the fact that I had held some leases in Texas. He made arrangements or a contract with me to include these holdings in his proposition. To be sure, I might have investigated the man more but my idea was to get the matter off my hands so that if there were developments my associates and I might receive our share of the benefits from the operations. However, Rice became very much interested in the phenomena of the rdgs. and, of course, immediately had his list of friends whom he felt sure needed the benefits that might be derived from the rdgs. Among his friends was this gentleman, a Mr. [269] who still lives in north-central Pa. His reading indicated that from catarrh of a dry nature in his head and throat he was gradually losing his sense of hearing, which - when I met the man and became acquainted with his family - I could easily see; that is, that he was losing his hearing - though, of course, I could not whether it was from that cause or not. Rice carried me to Mr. [269]‘s home on a little visit - quite a lovely family, he and his wife with four girls and a little boy. While there, however, Rice used the association in getting a considerable amount of money from Mr. [269]. Naturally, the inference was - I felt sure (though it might have been my own guilty conscience) - that I was in cahoot with Rice; and, of course, they paid little or no attention to the suggestions made in the rdg. However, the mother - wife of Mr. [269] - asked for a rdg. while I was there for one of the girls, who had been suffering with what the doctors called arthritis. The treatments suggested for her were rather simple and she was able to carry them out at home. While the rdg. told that this would require some yrs., for the trouble to be entirely eliminated, with the growth and natural development of the system to the elements that would eliminate it would clear entirely. This result they accomplished. Last fall, in cleaning out some old papers in his store (he is a general merchandising man in a mining district) Mr. [269] came across some snapshots that were made while I was there. The family conversation turned to my visit and, naturally, to Mr. [269]‘s condition and what had happened in the meantime with the daughter [5763]. So, I had a letter from him and he asked if I had been able through the years to get in touch with any man who might perform the finger surgery operation suggested in the first rdg. It so happened that we had contacted a man who was for some years an instructor in a Philadelphia college, but who had been living in Norfolk ever since we had been in Virginia Beach. He is both an M. D. and an osteopathic surgeon, making a specialty of eye, ear, nose and throat troubles. So, Mr. [269] came down. His third rdg., as it happened to be (for we had given him a couple years ago), still insisted that a finger surgery operation would be well, but indicated there was a great deal of trouble in the head and throat that would necessitate clearing before this could be performed. So, he accepted the information and went about to have the treatments. We were agreeably surprised, even after such a long delay, to find that he responded very readily. Such quantities of pus, wax and the like, that was removed from his head!

“Finger surgery, as you no doubt know, is using the fingers to go in behind the palate to break up adhesions along the lines of the eustachian tubes. Such an operation is quite delicate, requiring the individual performing such to have rather small hands and fingers. Not everyone can do it, because almost the entire hand has to be put in the mouth of the patient. Usually two such operations are required. Outside of one or two cases (of possibly sixty that have come under our observation) there has been a sixty to ninety percent clearing of the trouble in this direction. To say the rdgs. have possibly been the greatest factor in developing this mode of operation in this particular profession, or for this particular ailment, might be saying too much; but I do know that there are very few doctors who use this method. This may be because there are few who have small enough hands, or who are not afraid to undertake it. Also I do know that with one doctor [Percy Woodall, D.O.], who had never attempted or seen an operation of this kind, the rdg. suggested just how he could perform the operation; outlining in detail for him the manner in which it should be carried on. Although his first patient [going to him with a rdg.] was one he had dismissed as incurable, in five to six weeks after the rdg. outlined the mode of procedure the patient was better than ninety percent normal in hearing. [GD’s note: I have not been able to indentify this reading or even the fact that a copy of it is on file. This took place somewhere between 1917-22 - before my day.]

“It would be quite interesting to talk this over with you. Dr. Richardson in Norfolk has developed a method called all his, or it is known in the osteopathic surgeons’ reports as the Richardson method. As to whether the rdgs. have been of aid in his arriving at this method or not I don’t know. At least he has had a dozen or more cases that have come to him through the rdg. suggestions, with possibly not one that might be termed a failure.”

R4. 3/22/33 Dr. A. J. Foerter’s reply: “I want to thank you for going to the trouble of explaining to me at such length the nature of finger surgery. The fact that improvements followed its use in the cases you mentioned, speaks volumes for its value. In my own case I am let out from using such methods, as my hands are entirely too large to put in the mouth to maniluate [manipulate?] the back part of the throat.”

R5. 5/15/33 Mr. [269] wrote EC that he had returned to Norfolk for his second series of treatments: “Had my second finger surgery operation from Dr. Richardson last Sat. a.m. Throat has been quite sore since that time. I hope to be feeling better soon and will probably see you before I return home.”

R6. 5/16/33 Wife [1408]‘s letter to EC: “I am sort of anxious to know if another rdg. at this time would be beneficial. Perhaps you can tell when you see him. I am anxious to keep in touch with treatments with the rdg., then we know everything will be right. I don’t think Dr. Richardson is using the violet ray; he sort of intimated it was not necessary.”
