This psychic reading given by Edgar Cayce at his office, 115 West 35th Street, Virginia Beach, Va., this 30th day of December, 1926, in accordance with request made by self - Dr. [2739].
[Edgar Cayce; Mrs. Cayce, Conductor; Gladys Davis, Steno. Hugh Lynn Cayce.]
Time of Reading 12:00 Noon - Eastern Standard Time. New York City.
-
GC: You will have before you the body of [2739], … N.Y. City, together with the information as was given yesterday respecting his experiences and urges in the earth’s plane, and his ability to apply same in the present - together with the contemplated efforts of those who would establish the hospital of The Association of National Investigators - and you will answer the questions which I will ask you regarding this.
-
EC: Yes, we have the body, the experiences, and the contemplated conditions as respecting the establishing of the institution.
-
To correlate these conditions together would become quite an undertaking; though, as we find, there are many conditions, many plans, many places, and through these the efforts as have already been made, the contemplated plans might be worked out in an effective manner through the efforts of this body; yet there will be many changes to be made in the actions of the body, and much to be learned and much to be UNLEARNED by the body - for there are as many antagonistic conditions to be met as there are antagonisms in the mind of the entity. To correlate these there must be some basis from and through which these will come, for the final analyses or judgment, or of the institution, is to be followed in the way and manner as is set - which would be through the reading - that would be the final analysis, the final answer for each and every condition as would arise. Excepting from that plane we would have very good results, for we would find these would follow along those channels as has been outlined that these may be established, for the benefit of those in the physical, mental, and in the various conditions of life, and there will be seen there will be many elements created, worked out - the ability is within the entity, or body-mind of this entity, to work out many; yet these must be followed much in that channel as has been given.
-
Ready for questions.
-
(Q) Is Dr. [2739] the right man to organize this hospital? (A) No! Not the right man to organize the hospital, but would be A CORRECT man to conduct same WHEN ORGANIZED. He’s not an organizer! For we find these conditions as have been outlined, in the urges and those conditions as are latent and as are developing in the affairs of this body - the body, see, Dr. [2739] is CAPABLE in mind and in the correct ability for which such an institution basically is founded - but to found, establish, or build an institution upon the building principles (which are separate, now) of the body - wouldn’t be well - wouldn’t be in keeping; but for the institution head, or the institution operative, or the institution as the data gatherer, as an able physician meting out benefits to those who may be drawn to same, the ABILITIES are excellent - and these may be carried out. There are many changes, as has been seen, that should be made in the mental position or attitude of the individual.
-
(Q) Has Dr. [2739] the proper knowledge needed for development of this hospital according to the lines laid down by the reading? (A) He has the proper knowledge, the proper understanding, to a certain extent - but not ALL the knowledge as is necessary.
-
(Q) You will discuss in detail the manner and means of organizing this hospital and how Dr. [2739] should develop it. (A) The discussion of this is as a separate and distinct condition - though they may be merged into one. The foundation of same should be along those lines as have often been outlined for such an institution. That is, a PLACE - presided over by a capable individual, well balanced first SPIRITUALLY - that’s the first element necessary in the change for this individual to qualify for such a condition, and the material knowledge as regarding physiology, anatomy, materia medica, hygiene, dietetics, and the mental application of all as respecting the individual - these are necessary qualifications of one heading such an institution. Spiritually set the individual capable of assisting or directing such a place.
The place would be any place equipped sufficient to care for those who might be in that position of having those conditions applied to their physical and mental bodies, for the correction or correlating of same, so that physically, mentally, their bodies may be made-nearer whole, performing the functions for which IT - that BODY - has been given the experience in the earth’s plane, see? Such a place as has been given would find the better surroundings for propagation, at or near the places as given. First, Virginia Beach, Virginia. The elements surrounding same would be that those that enter such an institution would first gain membership, or admittance, through that of the membership to the Association, which would be of the benevolent nature, see? No stock, no dividends - yet charges for the upkeep of the hospital would be in the nominal way and manner, and there may be endowed such places, or rooms, by individuals or groups that would take care of those that are as the beginning of a more perfect understanding of the relations between the spiritual, the physical, and the Creative Energies as are manifested in the material world.
Much discussion may be made, many various phases must be considered - the purely material side, the spiritual side, the financial side, the conductive agencies, the abilities of each and everyone to function in their normal place, must be considered - with a head - the head not necessarily the doctor’s head, but the doctor’s head in that place necessary, and not too high above the rest!
-
(Q) Will Dr. [2739] be able to develop this hospital without additional medical aid? (A) For the present without additional MEDICAL aid - but many assistants of those other natures as regarding the treatment of the bodily ills.
-
(Q) Is this the proper beginning for this hospital? (A) Begin with one, two, three. The proper beginning is when the individuals have qualified THEMSELVES for the beginning! Qualify first! Do not begin and hope to qualify afterwards! The first necessary qualification for the individual is that of the spiritual attitude. The mental and physical attitudes are correct. The abilities are correct.
-
(Q) How may he gain the right spiritual attitude? (A) By fasting and prayer.
-
(Q) How large a building is necessary to begin? (A) One room is large enough to begin - but would be necessary, for those surrounding the conditions, to have from five, six, to ten rooms. We would find in less than twelve months there would be more than fifty necessary though, and in less than three years more than two hundred.
-
(Q) Has Dr. [2739] the business ability to organize and to develop this institution? (A) He has the ability to develop the institution - not to organize. The organizing as is necessary meaning that as of the proper correlation of the various elements and individuals who may be associated with same. Another at the head would be better than doctor as head, though doctor heading the medical phase of such an institution.
-
(Q) Who would be the proper person for this head? (A) One such as Morton Blumenthal.
-
(Q) What expense will be necessary at the beginning? (A) Depends upon the character or nature of the paraphernalia, and of the size of the institution. From thirty-five hundred (
3,500) to ten thousand dollars (10,000), see? -
(Q) What date should the hospital be started? (A) Today!
-
(Q) Shall Dr. [2739] retain any of his practice in New York? (A) Very good connection, if he has one that would be house physician while away at practice. For the correlation of such, do not spread too much ground at once. Begin with the small beginning. Satisfy self first of the plausibility of a workable basis - for to give the END of that which may be attained through these forces and be developed, he will pass through several generations and ages before he would find the end, see? He would not ever hope to see the end, nor that capable of being gained or learned through such sources; yet satisfy self first of the PLAUSIBILITY, see? of the CONSISTENCY of that being attempted. That would, then, be first through the application of that as is given, making two, three, to five, such applications to individual lives, seeing, knowing, obtaining the results through same. Then gradually build, build, build, see? For, as has been given, FIRST must the application come to the individual. Then to classes, then to masses. Not to masses or classes first, but INDIVIDUALS. Hence the individual application, would the entity conduct such - the individual application of the spiritual forces as must be necessary from WITHIN to APPLY that which may be gained by the entity! In other words, wholly SUBMERGING the ego that the I AM may magnify!
-
(Q) What sort of compensation should be arranged for Dr. [2739] and the hospital? (A) With the proper compensation as is necessary for the spiritual insight the individual obtains. That is, taking care of the material man in a way and manner commensurate with that given out. Not give out expecting to be paid in fame and fortune, but that commensurate with the efforts put forth - three thousand to thirty-five hundred, to four thousand dollars a year, to begin.
-
(Q) How shall the fees between the hospital and Dr. [2739] be arranged? (A) This is a matter of business that should be worked out by whoever heads the undertaking, as the club or institution - for, as the matter of the necessary charges for upkeep of hospital, with the necessary equipment and that necessary for the upkeep of those who conduct the affairs of the institution - basically business.
-
(Q) Is Dr. [2739] physically able to organize and conduct this hospital? (A) Physically able.
-
(Q) Is there anything abnormally wrong with the body of [2739]? (A) Nothing physically abnormally wrong. Spiritually - that would be different, for the body spiritually must gain the proper relations as must exist between the mental body, the physical body, and the spiritual body. The application of the one without the other is NOT the whole body. Hence [in] an entity there is the spiritual body, there is the mental body, there is the physical body. To be a physical healer], or a physician of the material body, without a knowledge of the mental body, and [without] the ABILITY TO APPLY THE SPIRITUAL FORCE, [THERE] IS EXPENDED just part of healer, and a healer for dollars and cents! HEAL FOR THAT OF MAKING THE BODY ONE WITH THE WHOLE! Hence the spiritual insight that the body, the entity, may gain through that of prayer and fasting.
The body in a physical manner has those conditions that may be called defects physically, but defects and abnormalities are different conditions. Defect may be made in mental, a defect in physical, or a defect in direction of spiritual!
In the defects in physical, these are rather as WARNINGS for this individual, rather than that as of the conditions to be changed. The eyes, the strain on same - the conditions with the gormandized stomach. Yet these may be changed. These are direct conditions, but not abnormal conditions, for these are results of abuse of the physical body.
Learn, then, to care for the physical, for the mental, for the spiritual! The body, the mind, the ENTITY, has the ABILITIES [if he will] WILL HE APPLY THEM!
- We are through for the present.
Reports
Reports & Follow-up
R1. 12/30/26 EC’s letter to Dr. [2739]:
“When my friend, Mr. Kahn, was here in the early part of the month, he spoke to me of some young physician whom he felt might be interested in the work that we have been trying to do. However, at the time he didn’t give me your name or address. I was not surprised, then, when I had yours of the 22nd, for I am always glad to hear from anyone who is interested in trying to be able to serve others better, and if I hadn’t thoroughly convinced myself that this is what may be accomplished by following out the information obtained through these readings, I wouldn’t ever want to have anything to do with it. Of course, since receiving your letter, and since Mr. Kahn was here, I have had a letter or two from my friend, Mr. Blumenthal, and he has told me something of the enthusiasm with which you have viewed the prospective association. Then of course, it was of considerable interest to me to see what would be given as your real mission on earth, through the Life reading, and as you will see, I held this over until the questions as regarding the association might be asked.
“Now, I am in hopes that this will be just as interesting to you as it has been to me, and I am in hopes that it will prove the beginning of an association that will be beneficial to a very great many people. To be sure, I do not know your experience with psychic phenomena, or how far your studies have gone into the occult, but from my last twenty-five years experience with the phenomena as is manifested through me, I believe I can safely say you will find this different.
“Now, Dr. [2739], I am sure you have already realized that the first thing that you want is to be SHOWN something, and as everyone else, you want it firsthand. I wish I could tell you that I could make an appointment for you at any time you might have one of your patients request one, but this I can’t do. At the present time we are already booked up for at least the next twenty-five or thirty days. However, if, as Mr. Blumenthal has intimated, you desire to visit Virginia Beach with him, and if at that time you should desire that a reading be made on some of your individual patients, you had best bring the written request from such a one. Now, I have no comment at the present time to make on what is written here, but I would like very much to talk the matter over very seriously and very earnestly with you. To be sure, this institution has been the dream of my life, and especially so for the last fifteen years, and I’m very anxious to see it going. Naturally, I believe it will be worthwhile for any person who undertakes it. I realize also it is possible that I have fooled myself a great deal, though I do not believe that anyone that would study the reports would say this - and you will never be able to judge at long distance, nor will you be able to say whether it is consistent by just seeing or hearing two or three. However, I am sure, were you able to open the place tomorrow, by Monday you would have at least one regular patient, and one patient regularly to treat - which would certainly be a wonderful start, don’t you think? So I am in hopes we’ll have the opportunity to talk this over in the very near future…”
R2. 1/1/27 EC’s letter to DEK David E. Kahn]:
”…I had a letter from the doctor there in New York. I presume it’s the one you referred to when you were here. You never did tell me what his name was, but he wrote for the reading, and although no doubt you have already seen it, I am enclosing you a copy of each, that you may have them to study at your leisure. I did not make a comment on this to either the doctor or Morton, but I guess to you it would be different still. Apparently, with some changes (which cannot be called minor at all) he would be the very man. I don’t know though how the reading will impress him…
“Now, Dave, I want you to be sure and let me know about what you think of the readings on the doctor. Don’t lay this aside and say you’ll do it at a convenient season - ‘cause you are busy (for I know you are always busy), but I want your first impression, not your afterthought, not after you’ve tried to fix it around so it makes it fit, but your first impression about the whole thing…”
R3. 1/10/27 DEK’s letter to EC:
”…Now for the doctor…Judge, my first impression is that he is not the man to do the work. It takes a stronger and better man from a religious and also a business standpoint. When the hospital is organized he’d be a good practioioner. I still have another man in mind, a man of money; owns a big hospital personally and is a big business man, etc. He is on the staff of another big hospital. I’ll see him on my return to New York, but for the present [2739] is out of the question…”
R4. 1/13/27 EC’s letter to Mr. DEK:
“As for the doctor, I don’t know, Dave. I’m not exactly of the same opinion as yourself as regarding his abilities or his fitness for the position. It’s merely a case of where an individual needs to change their mental outlook on life, and what the whole thing’s all about. Of course, if he can’t do this, or doesn’t want to do it, he’s not the proper man! But, he has the ABILITY to do it; maybe he hasn’t the desire. He has the WILL to do it; maybe he doesn’t choose to put it into action. Possibly he has too much of a merialistic mind at the present, but he has the ability to turn it in the right direction if he would.
“Now, whoever is this other fellow you have in mind? I’d like to see him and talk to him, but I’d like to see and talk to [2739], not that I think that I can change his mind, but I’d like to see what a fellow looks like that has been offered the opportunity he has, and has the abilities he has, and then deliberately turns it down!
“Haven’t heard anything especially from Morton recently. I’m sure he has been real busy, and I think that he was kind of surprised at the reading on the doctor, and has had quite a number of conversations, perhaps with him respecting the information as was given.
“Yes, we received the chairs all right, and they were fine! Certainly do appreciate them; makes everything look pretty nice now. We didn’t get the finishing varnish nor the castors for the buffet. Miss Sidelman said she would attend to the matter, and I presume she will.
“Edgar Evans is getting along a bit better now. He had a bad cold about the same time I did, but has about gotten over it. He is able now to hop around a little with the aid of crutches. His leg is drawn badly, but I’m sure will straighten out as he uses it, and the soreness goes out of the muscles sufficiently.
“Had a letter from your mother the other day. I certainly hope that she does take the advice that was given and kind of eases up on things. You’ll have to look out for that and see that she does.
“Well, let me hear from you whenever you have the opportunity. We all send our kindest regards. Don’t forget to remember us to the young lady [Lucille Kahn whom he later married] when you write her. I’m sure you have to do that every night, don’t you? Maybe you’d better tell her if those people haven’t written, for them to write…”
R5. 3/26/27 EC’s letter to DEK:
”…I was certainly very much surprised at the attitude the doctor seemed to take, after you and Morton had both said what you did about him. Possibly he has had time to think…”
R6. 3/31/27 EC’s letter to Dr. Thomas B. House:
“Well, I believe since I wrote you last I made a visit to New York. Had quite an interesting experience. Dave and Morton had me come up there, and I attended a dinner given by one of the Jewish clubs. There were twenty-three people, I believe (to be exact), at that dinner, for whom I had given physical readings; either for them or some member of their family, and not a single one of them had I ever seen before. So this didn’t include Morton or any of his people. It was a revelation to Morton to find so many people of his own race, all in one group, that were so enthusiastic as to the results that might be obtained by following out the suggestions, and it looks like we might be able to get something started pretty soon. I also saw the doctor that we have had some correspondence with, and that Morton and Dave have had under observation for some time. He is very anxious to get going. He is also anxious to have you associated with him, for he is a regular medical man, and as he says, he has followed out a great number of the readings as have been given for people in and around New York. I mean by that, that he has gotten the list of people that were at this club meeting, and he has investigated each case individually, and he has found that at least forty-six percent needed osteopathy, either wholly or combined with other treatments. So, if you are still thinking of what might be done, why we want you to keep this in mind. They all feel, from the reading that you had, that it wouldn’t be well, or wouldn’t be the best to undertake it unless we had you…”
R7. 5/15/27 Dr. [2739] referred a patient for a Physical Rdg.
R8. 9/9/27 Letter from David E. Kahn to EC:
”…In the midst of my cold when I first lost my voice I was at the office and in walked Dr. [2739]. He is anxious to reopen negotiations, but I felt it better to wait a while until you come East…”
R9. 2/5/35 DEK’s letter to EC:
”…Well Ladd [Robert N. Ladd] will go to Reilly’s and take over the farm Wednesday. Reilly goes to Radio City and we will have some meeting place, a room to hold four hundred people, the finest in the world. “Dr. [2739] will go with him. Can you beat it? Well, Judge, if we live long enough we will some day win the place you deserve…”
R10. “Reilly expects to open his place April 1st. They are spending for him $25,000 to make it a wonderful place…”
R11. 2/7/35 EC’s letter to DEK:
”…What did you think of Ladd’s reading? I suppose you got your copy from Ladd. Presumably, from what you say has taken place, Ladd was at least able to sell Reilly a bill of goods on it. I really did not think that it fitted so well, and was really surprised at it going through as it evidently did. It certainly is funny though, that [2739] is back in the picture.
“I’m sure Reilly will have a wonderful place in Radio City. I understand from Hugh Lynn that Gray [Gray Salter] has left Reilly’s, which may leave the whole Association in quite a mix-up, inasmuch as there was a tentative agreement, I believe, between Hugh Lynn and Reilly about the Radio Active Appliances. They may be able to get this all settled if I have an opportunity to get to New York and talk with Reilly in person…”
