This Psychic Reading given by Edgar Cayce at the office of the Association, Arctic Crescent, Virginia Beach, Va., this 11th day of December, 1943, in accordance with request made by the mother - Mrs. [2602], Associate Member of the Ass”n for Research and Enlightenment, Inc.

Born February 2, 1933, in New London, Connecticut. Time of Reading 4:00 to 4:25 P. M. Eastern War Time. …, Conn.

1. GC: You will give the relations of this entity and the universe, and the universal forces; giving the conditions which are as personalities, latent and exhibited in the present life; also the former appearances in the earth plane, giving time, place and the name, and that in each life which built or retarded the development for the entity; giving the abilities of the present entity, that to which it may attain, and how. You will answer the questions, as I ask them:

2. EC: Yes, we have the entity here, and those records written upon time and space or upon the skein of space and time. And in patience may they be unfolded, unrolled in such a way and manner that - if there will be the heeding - there may be the application of the tenets and truths that may bring a much closer relation to those activities wherein the entity may not only become a light, a help, not only proud of self but have everyone else proud of the entity.

3. These, then, must be done away with - there are tendencies that arise from the material as well as astrological aspects; the tendency for cynicism, the tendency for indifference to those things that have too much spiritual import.

4. Because the entity is averse to being dictated to, or of being in the form of policy, is no reason that there is not truth in the tenets of the church, or the laws and regulations thereof. Because others have made a sham of same is no reason for thee to make a sham.

5. For as ye will analyze and study in thy life, that place or that community without the house of worship is not sought after - by even the most wicked of men. For they have gradually forgotten that they are their brother’s keeper.

6. Let that rather be thy watchword, “I am my brother’s keeper.” Who is thy brother? Whoever, wherever he is, that bears the imprint of the Maker in the earth, be he black, white, gray or grizzled, be he young, be he Hottentot, or on the throne or in the president’s chair. All that are in the earth today are thy brothers. Those that have gradually forgotten God entirely have been eliminated, and there has come - now - and will come at the close of this next year - the period when there will be no part of the globe where man has not had the opportunity to hear, “The Lord He is God.”

7. And, as has been indicated, when this period has been accomplished, then the new era, the new age, is to begin. Will ye have a part of it, or will ye let it pass by and be merely a hanger-on, or one upon whom your brother - the Lord, thy Christ - may depend?

8. Remember, He has given thee father, mother, home, opportunity, possibilities that are within thine own grasp now. And the meanest, the littlest man in the world is one who is unappreciative of what has been done, what is being done. That is why man, when he forsakes God feels so low, becomes so little in his own sight.

9. So think on these things, and begin where the light begins - and that is within thine own heart and mind, as ye read, as ye study, as ye talk with the Lord of thy heart. Who is thy Lord? He that made heaven and earth, He that walked among men, He that said “Come to me,” He that gave “If ye open your heart, your mind, I will walk and talk with thee.” Or is it self, that ye may be a little bit better, a little bit bigger, a little bit saucier, yes, a little bit better to cuss this or that? No! He that is the Maker, the Creator, to whom the whole world has been given! He asks and entrusts to thee thy place to be fulfilled by thee to His glory, His honor, and then will there be peace, harmony, happiness in thy life experience throughout.

10. Urges arise through Mercury, Venus, Saturn, that are even adverse to Jupiter. Thus the urge latent within thee, “Well, let the other fellow do all the work - if I can just rest and have a good time.” Just the urge, “Well, if it doesn’t cost anything, then it will be very well.” All of these indifferences are latent. But these are to test thy strength in good. For Jupiter is the ennobling influence, the impelling force, and this once begun there will be no stopping thee. Then, not only be good, be good for something! If ye would have friends, be friendly. If ye would have love, love others. If ye would have beauty, make everything about thee more beautiful. If ye would learn His ways, talk with Him often; repeating His words often - not merely becoming as rote or habit, but make them practical in thy life and in thy dealings with others. Thus ye will find that Jupiter, Mercury, Saturn, all will be expressed in the joy you will find in being that which has brought peace within self.

11. The experiences in the earth have been many.

12. Before this the entity was in the land far west of the present nativity, and inland. Notice that Neptune is not active. Water and things over water may be, but from the better elements in Jupiter.

13. So, inland - be a landlubber, though it may cause a heartache occasionally - if there are those activities such as in the periods before that when the entity journeyed far over the seas, for then it brought to the activities of many lands those things that have been as many questions since then.

14. The entity’s name then was David Carlton.

15. Keep away from ships, that trade in traffic that would become questionable - as in those experiences.

16. Before that the entity was in the promised land when there were those changes wrought by the happenings on the day of Pentecost.

17. The entity was present, among those from Laodicea, that joined with the activities; becoming one that helped in the organization to which Lucius ministered, when all was converted in the tenets and teachings of Barnabas.

18. In the experience, the entity gained, he was active in those things having to do with weaving. And these will be well for the entity to consider in this experience - those things having to do with cordage mills, weaving mills, those that make cloth of various kinds, those that make products from seaweeds or such will be of special interest and an outlet for the entity in his material desires and aspirations.

19. The name then was Juhel.

20. Before that the entity was in the Egyptian land when there were those preparations made for the activities in the Temple of Sacrifice.

21. The entity was the temple keeper, and one that looked after or cared for those that made such preparations.

22. Then, things having to do with cares and wares of others may be the interest in which the entity may find an outlet as to be of a helpful influence.

23. Before that the entity was in the land of the present nativity, during those early periods when there were the diverse changes, as would be looked upon in the present, that will come again.

24. In portions of what is now Ohio, the entity was a sun worshiper but one who worked in cloth, weaving of camel’s hair and those things having to do with creating of clothes from the long-haired animals in those particular periods.

25. The name then was Ekl.

26. As to the abilities of the entity:

27. First find self. Let nothing deter thee from putting the first things first, and seek the Lord while He may be found - and when thou art old, He will not depart from thee.

29. (Q) Which studies should he specialize in with a view to his life work? (A) Those that would have to do with manufacturing or weaving.

30. (Q) Which college would be best for him to attend? (A) Let him choose this for himself, for he will change once or twice in his preparations.

31. (Q) Which foreign languages would it be best for him to study? (A) Spanish.

32. (Q) Has he any particular talents which call for special development? (A) The ability to judge people - that is, judge the characteristics of people. This doesn’t mean that he is to become a judge, but rather knowing the ones to approach - and how - in relation to the tenets or teachings that would be a part of the entity’s experience throughout this sojourn.

33. (Q) What is the cause of his habit of dawdling over his tasks, and how can it be corrected? (A) As indicated, happy-go-lucky - let somebody else do it - let George do it. But learn, as given, the basic meaning of “I am my brother’s keeper.”

34. (Q) How can we change his attitude toward his school work and his home duties? (A) As indicated, in the study and analysis of self in the ways outlined. Without that, no changing.

35. (Q) Why does he resent authority to such an extreme? (A) As just indicated, these are a part of the experience.

That’s why he resents authority as well as routine or rote, while if you will let it be set out so that he may make the routine himself, you can depend on him to do it!

36. (Q) Should he study a musical instrument; if so, which instrument would be preferable? (A) Music should be a part of each soul’s development. There’s not a great deal of music in this entity, except of certain natures. The piano would be well, or the banjo, for this entity.

37. (Q) When and where in past experiences has the entity been associated with: his father, [3902]? (A) The Egyptian experience.

38. (Q) His mother, [2602]? (A) The Egyptian experience, and the experience in Palestine or Laodicea.

39. (Q) Edgar Cayce? (A) In Laodicea, in Egypt.

R1. 1/7/44 Mother [2602]‘s letter: “I’ve been wondering if you read our readings at all - I know you don’t have time to read many of them. Both [2780]‘s and mine showed appearances in Egypt and association with you there. I know you had wondered if there was some association previously with [2780]. It is going to take some time to really digest all the information and get the most out of them, but I hope to find [2780]‘s especially very helpful in handling him. He has apparently made one of his about-faces and is very willing and cooperative both in school and at home, at the present time, - only hope I can keep things that way. Know he has the intelligence to do things if he really sets out to do it, but also know that he can’t be forced. The intimation that he take up weaving, etc. was quite a surprise - of course all his present tendencies are toward the water and chemistry but children’s ideas change considerably, and of course the chemistry really would work into the line of work recommended in the readings. It will be very interesting to see things work out.”

R2. 1/24/44 Mother [2602]‘s letter: ”…[2780] thinks much more of his reading after talking it over with Mrs. [2454], he was extremely disappointed at first - being a boy he wanted it to conform to his ideas but he says now he’s going to try to carry it out. He is quite well now that he’s over the flu. Still underweight, but otherwise quite well, and I guess he will always be the under-weight type, tall and slim like his daddy, [3902]. He’s having an osteopathic treatment tonight and tomorrow is getting his new glasses. The doctor says the old trouble with his eyes has cleared up but that owing to the fact that he is growing so fast and reading so much (he’s so engrossed in his Popular Science and Chemistry books that we can’t drag him away from them) that he is developing a tendency toward short-sightedness, so is giving him glasses to correct it. He’s quite an up and coming young man these days - starting a small paper route next week and is proud as Punch about it. Only hope he will stick to it. He’s inclined to get these wild enthusiasms and then have them peter out. However, I think the outdoor air and the responsibility will be good for him. His school work apparently is improving a good deal, though the next report card due next week will be a better basis for deciding that than his own opinion. At least his attitude seems much improved, thank goodness.”

R3. 3/8/44 Mother’s letter: “My son [2780] has executed quite a right-about face. From an absolute failure on his first report in the fall, he shot up so that this last report showed he was just short of the honor roll. He claims he’s going to make the honor roll this next time. Anyway, the main thing is that he’s changed his attitude, which is what really matters. Now that that is accomplished, I expect it won’t be too difficult to keep him that way.

He loves his chemistry work and has a little laboratory fitted up in the basement, and talks all the time about how he’s going to be a chemist. I’ve had an opportunity to take him through a laboratory where they mix medicines and drugs, and he was thrilled to death. Of course, his reading didn’t specify chemistry, but did speak of textile manufactory, and especially about making cloth from sea-weed, which would of course entail the study of chemistry, so it looks as if we have a budding chemist in the family. He has really improved so much in so many ways that it is a great comfort to us. I felt quite sure he had the brain power and the intelligence if he would only use it, and not be so lazy mentally. He’s so much more helpful around the house that it’s obvious that he’s going through quite a change in all his habits, most of it without real urging on our part, and good deal of it entirely unsolicited. That seems unbelievable, for he was never one to do anything without constant urging. He quotes different parts of the reading frequently, and I know he’s given it a lot of thought, young as he is.”

R4. 6/5/51 Reply to Questionnaire by his mother, Mrs. [2602]:

GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS

Answer all questions as completely as possible. Merely “Yes” or “No” is insufficient if you know inside that you have more thoughts you want to express. Remember that thoughts are deeds and that the final judgements are on the thoughts, not the deeds or actions. Every paper in our files is inviolably confidential as to source or individual identification with present appearance. Please do not hesitate or be in any respect afraid to express yourself. We welcome and cherish even the most meager expression because we know the value of that which stimulates it.

1. Do you still have a copy of your Life Reading? Yes.

2. How many times have you red your Life Reading? (If many times, give approximate number.) Seven or eight.

3. Did you read it to or with someone else and, if so, what was the relation of the person to you? Yes, mother.

4. Have you given a copy of your reading to anyone and, if so, what was the relationship to you of that person? Mrs. [2454], friend.

5. How recently have you read your Life Reading? Six months ago.

6. In what respects do you feel that your Life Reading was (1) true, (2) false, (3) correct, (4) imaginary, (5) hocus pocus, (6) inaccurate, (7) incomplete, (8) trivial? True in many respects.

7. Do you believe in a reincarnation of the soul and, if so, why? Yes. Partly because of the readings and partly through independent reading.

8. What is your idea or concept of Karma? Is it (a) a state to which a people aspire, (b) a state to which an individual aspires, (c) an environmental influence, (d) a hereditary influence, (e) something you yourself have done or thought or left undone and unthought in a previous incarnation? (e)

9. Have you in any respect consciously changed your (1) vocation, (2) thoughts, (3) actions or reactions toward others as a result of your Life Reading? Yes to (2) and (3).

10. Assuming your life to be no casual accident or experiment, do you have any new or different concept as to the purpose of your life as a result of your Life Reading? Yes.

11. Have you ever systematically or otherwise set apart any part of your day, week, month or any other period of your time for introspection or an examination and analysis of your inner self (and we do not mean writing in a diary) as suggested in your Life Reading? If not, why not and, if so, are there any results measurable to you? [2780] is very introspective, and studies philosophy continuously.

12. Do you regard your vocation, whether it be as laborer, supervisor, manager, official, engineer, lawyer, doctor, housewife, mother, or what not, as the dominant force in your life or do you look upon your vocation as an agency through which you can the better fulfil your purpose in this life? The latter.

13. How, in your opinion, can our Association best carry on the work of Edgar Cayce and the good for which he stood? I don’t know.

We have excellent reports on [2780]‘s life reading, via your letters, but would like to have this brought up-to-date, by both you and [2780]. Has he found the warnings helpful - and the suggestions for his life work. There is so much promise in his reading for him, we would like to have his reaction to it now. Comments on each paragraph of the reading, in addition to answering the above questions, should make an unusual and complete report for our records.

[2780] doesn’t react favorably to any criticisms, and has to be handled very tactfully.

He is very studious, and for several years has been very interested in philosophy, read and digested Plato and other philosophers even before starting high school. Belongs to a philosophical club in high school called the Symposium. And the school year book says of him:

“[2780]” is a quiet fellow who enjoys the finer things in life. He is ready at any time to hold a three or four hour discussion on Plato or Aristotle. “[2780]‘s” virtues of patience and fortitude are sure to raise him to the peak of success.

His graduation from high school takes place next week, and he has been on the first honors list all year. He finally awakened to the idea that study can be fun, and really went to work. He has won a $300 scholarship for this year at Brown University, where he plans to go. His plans are for a teaching career, to teach in college, requiring a Ph.D. Degree, or seven years of college. He wants to teach philosophy or biology, with the greater inclination toward philosophy.

Just what his future will develop I don’t know. He tends to be somewhat opinionated, and I hope life will tone that down somewhat, but I think [2780] will turn out all right. I have always felt that he would be good at research work, and the readings themselves pointed that way, but involving the manufacture of cloth, etc. He has no leaning in that direction at present, but with his present trend toward biology, anything could happen.

He is a staunch believer in Mr. Cayce and the readings, in every respect, and I can see where he tries to reconcile them with his reading and where there is a conflict he unhesitatingly takes the point of view of Mr. Cayce’s readings.

He has no interest in orthodox religion, can’t be drive to attend formal church worship, but has a deep belief in God and a universal consciousness guiding our lives and the world in general. In school chapel services his favorite speakers are: a Catholic priest, a Jewish rabbi, and a negro minister, so there is no intolerance in his make-up as far as religion goes. He says they are the only ones who really had anything to say that made sense.

It will be interesting to watch [2780]‘s development, especially if he majors in philosophy in college.

B2. 4/7/43 Mother’s letter: ”…It was a big relief to know that the apparent improvement in his condition is verified so definitely, and that he is doing so well. We certainly have a different boy than we had a year ago. Strangely enough, his disposition has taken an absolute right-about-turn from what it was then, and where he was so sensitive then to criticism or argument, now nothing seems to penetrate his tough skin. Scoldings and criticisms, both from ourselves and his teachers, roll right off like water off a duck’s back, he just can’t be bothered, so now we have a new problem. His teacher even phoned us last night, to ask if we couldn’t do something. He seems to think school work is just a joke so if it isn’t one thing it’s another. I must say though, that while we appreciate the fact that he has to get down to business and do better in school, it has its amusing side, after contrasting him with what he used to be. I do want his life reading this summer anyway, am anxious to see just what we have here…”
