This Psychic Reading given by Edgar Cayce at the office of the Association, Arctic Crescent, Virginia Beach, Va., this 11th day of May, 1943, in accordance with request made by the self - [2998], Associate Member of the Ass”n for Research and Enlightenment, Inc.

Born April 10, 1907, in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. Time of Reading 3:35 to 4:00 P. M. Eastern War Time. Memphis, Tennessee.

1. GC: You will give the relations of this entity and the universe, and the universal forces; giving the conditions which are as personalities, latent and exhibited in the present life; also the former appearances in the earth plane, giving time, place and the name, and that in each life which built or retarded the development for the entity; giving the abilities of the present entity, that to which it may attain, and how. You will answer the questions, as I ask them:

2. EC: (In going back to the place and time of birth - ” - Hattiesburg - yes - first experience about the city vibration - ”)

3. Yes, we have the records here of that entity now known as or called [2998].

4. In giving the interpretations of the records as we find them, these we choose from same with the desire and purpose that this information may be a helpful experience for the entity; enabling the entity to better fulfill those purposes for which it entered this present sojourn.

5. As we find, when a composite is drawn of the entity’s urges from that we call astrology, and from the material sojourns in the earth, there are very definite characteristics.

6. One that is rather intense, and at times very severe with others.

7. One that is gifted towards a religious tendency. Hence in those things pertaining to Y.M.C.A. work, Red Cross drives, anything pertaining to a helpful force for a great number of people, there would be found interesting facts and fancies for this entity. And either as a lawyer or a Y.M.C.A. worker the entity might find the greater outlet for the greater abilities that are manifested.

8. That to be warned of is an intenseness that causes the entity to grow cold or hot. For, the entity will not be a mediocre individual. He will either excel or he will be a complete failure - from the material angle.

9. The entity is itself oft its own worst enemy, being in that tend “If I can’t have what I want, I don’t want anything!” These are not good policies, as the entity has found, and yet those tendencies for the gratifying of self or of self’s appetites at times betray these characteristics of the entity.

10. In giving urges that are manifested and latent from the interims of sojourn between material appearances, or in those consciousnesses from which the entity enters the various experiences in the earth, - we find Mercury, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus all a part of the entity’s experience.

11. A high mental ability. A good orator. A good reader. These are the things, conditions and circumstances the entity should apply in its experience. But let its ideals, its purposes, its hopes, its fears - both for good and bad - be founded more in the spiritual truths with which the entity tends to become associated, and let them be the foundations for those ideals spiritual, mental and material. And we will find better activities.

12. In a larger city than the present might the entity succeed the better, - as Atlanta, Dallas, Newark, New York, Boston, Indianapolis, Cincinnati. Any of these, and especially the first two would be excellent ground for activities, and the vibrations are more in keeping with the activities of the entity. But let it come through choices as of groups, corporations, organizations that would call the entity in activities in one or the other of those environs indicated.

13. Jupiter gives the universal consciousness. Thus a tendency towards uplift, a religious thought or purpose. But make it the reality, make it a practical experience. And these will become more and more overcoming of the “Do it or die!” But know that in whatever state ye find yourself, there the Lord hath need of thee. There apply thyself; never being satisfied, but ever being content; never casting judgment upon self nor upon others. For it is with what measure ye mete that it is to be measured to thee again, and the manner in which ye treat thy fellow man is the manner in which ye are treating thy Maker, thy Savior.

14. As to the appearances in the earth, - these we find quite varied. While all may not be given here, these show the characteristics of the entity, and the latent urges, and those manifested activities in the urges of the mental as well as the spiritual self of this entity, [2998], called in the present.

15. Before this the entity was in those activities in which there were the settlings in the land of the present nativity, of those peoples following the fall of Napoleon.

16. The entity was among the French that came into this land, and the entity remained, though others that were among those groups with which the entity came did return to the homeland.

17. The entity became rather as one in authority, as a judge, as an interpreter of the laws for the various groups of peoples under the varied activities that were a part of the customs in that period and in that land.

18. Then in the name Renee Danele, the entity - while having hardships - had his way, and applied self in that manner. The entity gained, until disputes arose when there were other groups that would form part of state, or form a part of another organization. Then, because the own way was not had, there set in the detrimental forces and the giving way to a gratifying of appetites of the body which were not good.

19. As indicated, these become problems - as much in the environs of the entity at times as in self. Yet these may be conquered, if the mind of the entity is set to do so. For, there are the abilities to control by reason and by the power of the mind, and the associations of self in mind, in body, in soul, with the sources of power and strength.

20. For, from Whom doth power and strength arise? The spirit within! What spirit, then, do ye worship with? Thine own, or others? or His that is the way and the truth and the light?

21. Before that the entity was in the Roman land, during those periods when there were those combinations of groups and individuals put in authority through the various portions of the lands that were paying tribute to the Roman land.

22. The entity spent portions of the time in what is now North Africa, and other portions in the Holy Land; coming in contact with some of those problems that were a portion of the Jewish problem as well as the Roman, as well as those problems that arose in the church.

23. These, then, make for that tendency within the experiences of the entity in the present to be closely affiliated oft with the various groups where there is a great difference in the social status of the individuals involved. These become parts of the problems of the entity.

24. There the entity was closely affiliated with some of those activities that were a part of Cornelius in Caesarea, and the entity then may become associated or affiliated, directly or indirectly under the same activities in the present of that entity, [1848] - through the political interests and those having to do with certain organizations or certain groups.

25. Before that the entity was in the Persian and Arabian land. There the entity was the counselor to the Persian king at that particular period, and was acquainted with the activities in the ‘city in the hills and plains’ because of those affiliations that gradually arose through the activities there.

26. Thus the entity became a mediator between those of the various groups, and the interest manifested in the present from that experience - as Pelegus - is shown in not too much of the orthodox, but the ability to think as it chooses, even though it may be wrong, or be a part of a body of a very close organization.

27. Before that the entity was in the Holy Land, when those groups of people were entering from the Egyptian land.

28. The entity then was among those who made overtures for a united effort in making peace with the leader of those groups, and thus - as termed by some - caused even Joshua to falter.

29. Yet these abilities make in the present for that ability to make peace, and to make for organized effort where the spirit of the law, rather than the letter of the law, may be applied in its relationships and its dealings with others.

30. The name then was Jabeliel.

31. Before that the entity was in the Egyptian land, when there were those preparations being made for the uniting of efforts of the various groups with the return of the Priest.

32. We find there the entity acted as the peacemaker among the counselors to the King, making those overtures through the Natives as well as the Atlantean groups.

33. Thus those extremes in part to which the entity goes at times to carry on the efforts. These made sincere, or purposeful, may bring those abilities again into active forces in the experience of this entity.

34. The name then was El-Arar-Ie.

35. As to the abilities of the entity in the present, that to which it may attain, and how:

36. First, find self. Know thy ideal, - spiritually, mentally, materially. Study to show thyself approved unto that ideal, a workman not ashamed, but putting stress where stress is due, and not to have thine own way alone.

37. Keep thine self unspotted from condemnation. Love the Lord and His ways; He will guide thee aright.

I have been very much interested in the life reading. I am a little disappointed at some of the vague, half-disclosures and confess that I have some difficulty in understanding various parts of page 3. It may be, however, that this is because of my unfamiliarity with the terminology used. A little later I will write you more in detail as to this reading.

Dear Mr. Cayce:

I have returned to work with a new spirit and very much refreshed by my visit with you. I realize now where I can go for a quick spiritual pick up. I am fully convinced that I would be much happier if I could find some way to be a material help to your work, and I hope that you will call upon me for anything that you think I can do.

I would like to confirm readings for the following dates which you suggested: September 7, September 10, and September 14, 1944. Mr. M. H. Carpenter has requested me to ask you for a reading date for himself, which I hope you can work in about the same time if possible.

If you approve, I would like to do the same thing with the various incarnations that [2533] has done. Towards this end, I will appreciate your giving me four reading dates for Spring 1945 and four for the Fall of 1945 and the same for the year 1946. Since it is apparent that soon you will be the business man in the world, I would also appreciate your making the same arrangements for me for the year 1947!

I have had a long telephone conversation with your friend, Dr. Lundy. He was very much interested to know that you are still alive and kicking. He said that he had not heard from you in many, many years but knew you quite favorable in Bowling Green, Kentucky. He had not heard of the new book or the CORONET article or any of your recent activities. I told him that you are now a world famous figure, and he was glad to hear this, though apparently not surprised. We have an appointment for lunch next Monday, and I will tell him all about you.

Dear Mr. Cayce:

Thank you for your letter of February 1, confirming the appointment. I have notified Mr. Carpenter of his appointment and he will write you directly concerning it.

I am still enjoying the benefits of my visit to you and am looking forward keenly to visiting you in June. I think I might as well enclose a check for $25.00 at this time, which I understand will make me eligible for active membership. If this is not correct, please advise me.

Dr. Lundy and I have had a very long visit together. He was delighted to know of the manner in which the people are now receiving your work. He told me about his early scientific experiences and natural ability in this field, but apparently he did not have the guts to continue in this work. He is now past seventy, is hale and hearty and still hunts birds. He told me that he was going to get a copy of your book and after reading it, discuss it with me. Apparently, he does not have any friends in … who are interested in this type of intellectual activity.

If there is any possible chance of your coming to Memphis soon, or in fact any other time, I want you to pay me a special visit. As I told you I have one room and bath reserved day and night for such friends as you and I assure you that you will be comfortable. I know a large number of people who will enjoy meeting you and I believe that I can assure you of a pleasant stay in … as my guest. How about this?

I think that Mr. Bro [Harmon] is doing a good job and I am writing to tell him so.

Dear Mr. Bro:

I received your weekly bulletin this morning and read it with a great deal of interest. Each week I look forward to it, and I also look forward to the various brochures you are mailing out.

Last week I received the brochure on the Essenes [The ESSENES by Enid Smith, Ph.D. - Published 9/43 by A.R.E]. This is one of the most interesting accounts I have ever read. The person who prepared this matter has done a distinguished and scholarly job. I think that the writer has been correct in adopting a plan of reporting the historical significance of the reading, but letting the customer reach his own conclusion. I shall enjoy reading and rereading this work.

I note that you are encouraging people to donate books to your lending library. I also noticed that you had on the shelves of the library a large number of varied works and it occurs to me that it is possible that neither you, Mr. Cayce nor other members of the staff have read all these volumes. Don’t your think it would be a good idea, when loaning the book, to make it clear to the borrower that the contents of the book are to be judged by the reader, and that the Association for Research and Enlightenment neither approves nor disapproves of the statements made therein. Otherwise, it is possible for an indiscreet and non-thinking disciple to pass off the contents of some of your books as Cayce Gospel merely because it has come from the Association’s Library.

I am returning the original copy of some questions and answers which were loaned to me by Mrs. May Verhoven. I have made copies and an enclosing three extra copies for her. I would appreciate your telling her that I am sorry to have kept them so long and that I appreciate so much her having let me have them.

Please give your wife my best regards and also Miss Wirsing, Miss Davis, and all others.

R8. 3/4/44 Saturday, Harmon Bro’s letter to [2998]:

Mr. [2998] …, Tennessee Dear Mr. [2998]

It’s been on my mind for some time to tell you how much we enjoyed your visit to the Beach. I don’t think there’s a girl in the office who files letters, or makes cards or addresses Bulletins to you who doesn’t comment on how pleasant it was to have you here!

We need people who can come in here with their eyes wide open and make thoughtful suggestions. Our heads are buried so deep in details that we have about as much perspective as any ostrich can claim; no more.

You are right about not allowing the various queer books we have collected to go out as authoritative. Fortunately, our library is in such a confused jumble at present that few people have enough determination to work through it and find what they want. We can take advantage of this low circulation to organize the library on a sounder basis, along the lines you suggested.

Mae Verhoeven and I are sketching out a plan of indexing the readings which should lead us to a find collection of materials on American History. If eagerness could do it, you’d have the materials tomorrow, but I suspect that it will take months.

Mr. Cayce has been and still is quite ill. My wife and I took him to a doctor in New York whom he wanted to see, but the results aren’t yet apparent. You can imagine what kind of letters, calls and indignant relatives descend on us when the readings are not given as scheduled!

Your lending library is busy and a big help.

Dear Mr. Cayce:

I have been thinking about you a great deal and also talking about you. Sunday night, two weeks ago, Dr. Marshall Wingfield had me back at his church to give a third talk on you and your work. If I am to judge by what was said following the meeting, I made about 50 converts. I have noted that nowadays people will believe the most fantastic ideas probably because of their blind belief in present scientific advancement, and so I have found that it is not hard for me to present your talent in such a way that the hearer believes you can diagnose the physical ailments of a native of Timbuctoo. On the other hand, the doctrine of reincarnation is the hardest thing for them to swallow. I suppose this is only natural, as this is probably the most revolutionary idea ever presented to mankind.

I will be present for your Congress in June, and I have asked Mr. Bro to find me a hotel room. I am looking forward to this and to seeing you again with the keenest anticipation.

I sincerely trust that your health is again perfect and that you are not working under too great a strain. Please give my kindest regards to Mrs. Cayce and tell her that I am looking forward to seeing her again soon.

Dear Mr. [2998]

It is fine that you are coming to the Congress. The first formal meetings will begin on Wednesday morning, June 21, but open house will start Sunday, June 18th. Mr. Cayce will of course teach his famed Tuesday night Bible Class on June 20th.

I have discussed your need for accommodations with Mr. Booker, the manager of the Courtney Terrace, and asked him to write you. The Essex House has no more single accommodations. The Courtney is three blocks away from the office.

Now I have a favor to ask of you. On Thursday morning, June 22nd, beginning at 10 AM, we are asking two people to discuss their personal experiences with the readings. Mr. Cayce suggests that you handle this just as you please, considering life or physical readings or both and your experiences in talking about this work to church people. Give us whatever the spirit moves you to offer!

We have not yet chosen the other individual to be on that morning’s program with you.

If you are feeling particularly eloquent when you arrive, I will be delighted to keep you on tap for one of those inevitable occasions when someone doesn’t show up or gets through talking too soon. We’ll talk about that when you get here - but this is in addition to our Thursday morning need of you.

Dear Mr. Bro:

Thank you for your letter of May 6th. I have confirmed a reservation with Mr. Booker, of the Courtney Terrace, and plan to arrive in Virginia Beach, Sunday morning, June 18th. I want to be one of the first ones to arrive so that I will be sure not to miss anything.

I will be delighted to discuss my experiences Thursday morning or any other time you suggest. In fact, there is nothing that I enjoy doing more than talking about Edgar Cayce and his work. If I could get someone to listen to me, I would stop my work at any hour, get a good toe hold and dig right in. I get a tremendous kick out of catching a fundamentalist unawares and by discussing fundamentalism with him for while, slyly turn his attention to reincarnation, and finally drop it directly into his lap. As a usual rule, he treats it as he would a lighted bomb. The hell of it is I usually end up by convincing the fellow against his will, and after that, he is never the same man. There he is, poor devil, with an idea that he doesn’t want to accept and yet refuses to reject. Boy, how I like to throw it into those fundamentalists, and especially the Baptist variety.

I will promise to go as easy as you want me to so as to create the minimum shock resulting from revolutionary statements.

I shall certainly be glad to see all of you again. It’s funny but I kind of feel like I am one of the family.

R12. 6/22/44 Mr. [2998]‘s remarks to A.R.E. Congress:

“Harmon said this morning, the ideas that are expressed, and the various talks given during the congress represent merely the experiences of the speakers and not necessarily the views of the Association. So, I want you to distinctly understand, that I speak from experience, and that my views, however right, or however wrong, are right to me and are of some benefit to me, too, but may not be of any benefit whatsoever to you.

“I became acquainted with Edgar Cayce through, There is a River. A very good friend of mine, a congregational minister in … asked me to take a book and read it with the idea in mind of reviewing it. I read this book with a great deal of interest, and after I had read it, I said, ‘Here is the man, who has said it. These other men have approximated the message, but here is the man, who puts all the meat of a coconut into a pecan, in the way that the average man can take it and use it.’ That night after I had finished the book I wrote a letter to Edgar Cayce. I was amazed at the promptness of his reply. I thought, ‘Well, now here’s a man, who is a world figure, but he will answer letters and does it promptly, and that is something I don’t always do.’

“When I gave my review, possibly fifty or sixty people were out to hear it. Our church is very liberal. There were a few, who didn’t relish the idea of reincarnation, but were silenced when a lawyer, who was present stated that it was an accepted fact in the church during the 4th and 5th centuries. To the truth of this assertion the minister testified. I told the congregation that I was going to get a reading, that I had an appointment already. Everybody jumped up and said, ‘As soon as you do, come and tell us about it.’

“In my approach to the work, I have to start at the bottom. I asked for a physical reading. I have never been sick in my life. Of course I have had headaches and had my good and bad days, everyone does. Anyway, I got the reading [2998-1], and he told me more about how I felt than I could have explained to him, and I could experience the same sensations as I read his report on my condition. He said, ‘There has been a subluxation of your spinal column and this condition has been present for a long number of years,’ and it had done this to my stomach and this to something else and all these things had combined to form this and that condition, which he went on to explain in medical terminology. He said one thing that was very significant. You have a subluxation of your second dorsal and sixth lumbar. I may have gotten my lumbars and dorsals all mixed up, but you get the idea. He was specific.

“So when I read that I said, ‘Well anybody can say that a man who has a headache possibly has a maladjustment of his spinal cord, and possibly everyone can have something wrong with his spinal cord. Look at the osteopaths and chiropractors making a living, but he has really stuck his neck out, when he says the 6th is wrong and the 2nd is wrong, and he uses the term subluxation.

“I picked out a pretty good chiropractor. He was supposed to be the best. He charged the most, anyway. I took this reading along in my pocket, and went down to this fellow and said, ‘I want you to give me an examination.’ He said, ‘All right, what’s the matter?’ I told him, ‘Nothing.’ Then he said, ‘You are taking up my time, I have a lot of people waiting for me and I should get to them, because they do have aches and pains.’ I said, ‘Well you give examinations, don’t you?’ He said, ‘Yes.’ I told him that I was willing to pay for one. ‘What is your purpose?’ he asked. I told him I wanted to see if there was anything wrong with my backbone. He finally said that he would give me an examination, so I lay down and he went over me and then said, ‘Yes, you have a little something wrong there.’ Did you ever have this happen to you and did you ever have a sick headache, etc., and in other words he went over the whole thing Edgar Cayce had reported. I said, ‘Yes, what does that lead to?’ He told me that I had a subluxation of the second dorsal. ‘You don’t mean it!’ I said. ‘Yes,’ he replied. ‘Is there anything else wrong?’ I asked. He said there was not. ‘Are you sure?’ I insisted. ‘I’ve got an idea there is something else wrong. You run up and down there once more.’ He did and said, ‘Yes, you have something else wrong, the sixth lumbar has a subluxation.’

“I went to an osteopath. I don’t know why I didn’t think of him in the first place as he is a friend of mine. There, I was close-mouthed as a clam. I said, ‘Do you want to make a fee?’ He said that he did. ‘Well, go over my back and see what is wrong.’ He said, ‘Your second and sixth have subluxations.’ I showed him this diagnosis and he was very curious about it, and to some extent baffled; so he called in his father, who is his partner, and the two of them looked it over. They said, ‘We are going to treat you and see if this thing is right.’

“After the physical check up, and after my report back to Reverend Wingfell’s congregation on my physical condition, etc., I already had those two orthodox people. I decided I would have a life reading, so I immediately signed up for a life reading for myself, a physical reading for my wife, and a life reading for each of our children.

“Now it happens that our two children are adopted. There is terrible shock that comes to the child, when he realizes at first that daddy and mommy are not his flesh and blood. The only and best way, that we can see of circumventing this, of course, is to use the doctrine of reincarnation. It is of tremendous importance to me to be able to accept reincarnation. I have not had any personal experience that makes this belief my own. I hope to have it some day, so that it can actually be a part of me; but as far as my mind is concerned, my ability to reason is concerned; as far as my belief in a Creator, Who is in all respects just, I accept reincarnation; and so we will have the privilege of telling our children that the actual physical parents served the purpose of furnishing a physical vehicle for their souls; that once this vehicle has been furnished, just as when the production genius in Detroit has completed an automobile, then the function of those parents in regard to them, ceases.

“Reincarnation to many means the conquest of fear, mankind’s greatest enemy, the enemy that prevents mankind from being as effective as God intended him to be. If we have conquered the great fear, the fear of death, which comes to all who really, actually, truthfully, accept reincarnation, then we can proceed to conquer these minor fears, that plague and beset us every day of our lives.”

R13. 1/22/45 [2998]‘s letter to Gertrude Cayce:

Dear Mrs. Cayce:

It was Tuesday after Mr. Cayce passed that I learned the sad news. I immediately telephoned Riley Simmons who told me that he has sent a wire the previous Thursday, but this wire never did reach me. I knew that the Boss was seriously sick, but I always had the feeling he would recover. The shock of his passing was a great one for me, as I had the feeling that there would be many more years of work here for him. Of course, there now remains the work, together with the challenge to others to carry it on.

As you know, I have only known you and the Boss for a year. I will never forget that January day in 1944 when I walked into the office and met him and the rest of you. Prior to that time he and I had exchanged letters, and I felt so close to him even through correspondence that when I first met him, I experienced the warm feeling of renewal of an old friendship rather than the beginning of a new one. Without Tom Sugrue’s book, I would have never known the Boss, and if I had never know the Boss, I would have missed one of the profoundest influences in my life. There are at least a half-dozen who influenced my life and prepared my mind for the Boss’ message, but his influence has been the profoundest and most blessed of all the rest.

I suppose that of all the lessons I learned from him, the greatest is my present belief in the ultimate invincibility of love and patience. His messages stand before me constantly. For the past year there has not passed a day but what I have thanked God for having known Edgar Cayce. I feel quite sure that everybody who knew him had the same feeling, and I know it was not unique with me, but I always believed there was a warm and strange bond between him and me. He has given my life a new horizon; he has given me as a lawyer a new professional dimension in which to operate; he has made me believe that man can solve all problems with God’s help, and that joy and victory, and not despair and defeat, is man’s eternal heritage.

As the Boss has helped me, I share my love for him with you. I hope that you will always count me as one of your friends, and if ever I can be of any service to you in any capacity at any time, you must call upon me and let me prove it.

Dear Mr. Cayce:

I have received your letter of April 3. The date you have set for the readings is perfectly agreeable. From 9:30 A.M. until 10:30 A.M. Central Standard Time, Tuesday, May 11, 1943, I will be in my office at … Building. I will also be at the same place for the reading the same afternoon from 2:30 to 3:30, Central Standard Time.

Enclosed is a list of questions which I would like answered, if possible.

Is there any additional information you will need, especially about the life reading.

I have received the book you sent me and will read it very soon. I will write you my ideas about same.

Last night I had the pleasure of reviewing THERE IS A RIVER before a rather large group of people. Everyone present was tremendously interested, and several expressed an intention of buying the book and learning more about your work. After the review, there was an open forum, and many questions were asked. I know that Henry Holt & Company did not expect a book of this type to receive a wide distribution, but I believe and hope that it will far exceed their expectations. I think that it will find a wide circulation in groups interested in psychic phenomena and will be popular reading fifty years from now.
