This Psychic Reading given by Edgar Cayce at the office of the Association, Arctic Crescent, Virginia Beach, Va., this 26th day of July, 1943, in accordance with request made by the self - Mrs. [3110], new Associate Member of the Ass”n for Research and Enlightenment, Inc., recommended by Dr. Lulu Irene Waters.
[Edgar Cayce; Gertrude Cayce, Conductor; Gladys Davis, Steno.]
Time of Reading 4:05 to 4:15 P. M. Eastern War Time. Washington, D.C.
-
GC: You will go over this body carefully, examine it thoroughly, and tell me the conditions you find at the present time; giving the cause of the existing conditions, also suggestions for help and relief of this body; answering the questions, as I ask them:
-
EC: Yes - very bad conditions here.
-
For, as we find with [3110], there is a lesion formed in the reflexes of the right lobe of the brain; that has caused the paralysis or the static movements in the left side of the body.
-
We find that these conditions may be materially aided, yet this will require long and patient application.
-
These arise from injuries received to the circulation that flows from, or rather to the brain - and the heart condition is also bad.
-
Hence normal locomotion is prevented, also anything like near normal action.
-
There will be required, then, as we find, for at least a period of thirty days, the application morning and evening of the Glyco-Thymoline Packs at the base of the brain and along the area from the end of the spine to the 9th dorsal. Use three to four thicknesses of cotton cloth saturated in the Glyco-Thymoline and apply directly to the body over these areas, for at least an hour every morning and an hour every evening.
-
Each time following the Packs, massage the body - always away from the head, toward the lower part of body - with this combination of oils:
Peanut Oil…2 ounces, Olive Oil…1 ounce, Lanolin, dissolved or liquefied…1 teaspoonful.
Massage in a circular motion and to stimulate better circulation, not only along each side of the spine but the arms, the shoulders, the whole of the sacral area, and down the left limb especially, including the bursa in the feet, the ankle, and calf of the leg, and under the knee, and along the sciatic of the limb itself.
-
Each evening, following the last Pack and rub, use the Wet Cell Appliance carrying vibratorially to the body the Chloride of Gold.
-
Attach the Wet Cell Appliance to the body for an hour each evening, following the last of the Packs and massages as indicated. The Gold Solution should be in the proportions of one grain Chloride of Gold to each ounce of Distilled Water, and use at least six ounces.
-
Renew the Gold Solution every fifteen days. Recharge the Appliance, by a new charging solution, every thirty days.
-
Keep the attachment plates very clean or polished before and after using. Take the connections from the bottle or from the solution when not in use, cleansing them; and then putting back into the solution, or connecting to the Appliance, about twenty minutes before the attachments are made to the body.
-
Attach the large nickel plate, through which the Gold Solution passes vibratorially, to the umbilical or lacteal duct plexus - that is, three fingers to the right from the navel center, and two fingers up from that point. The small copper plate would be attached to the 9th dorsal plexus.
-
Take the regular diets, but leave off much of the fats.
-
Starches may be taken, but not an extra quantity nor altogether starches. For instance, no two starches should be included at the same meal.
-
Some proteins should be taken, but these should be included in the vegetables - in the manner in which they are prepared. Use more of the leafy variety than those of the bulbular or seed nature. Take a great deal of beans and okra and corn. These especially should be often a part of the diet. Also have fowl and sea foods often as part of the diet. Especially watercress, combined with green mustard and lettuce and celery, should also be in the diet.
-
If these are done consistently, we may find help. It will require the attitude of non-agression, non-condemning; it will require the attitude of expectancy, persistency and consistency, and the using of the time, the using of the abilities to be creative in thought - also the expressing of self for the benefit of others. This may be done in the writing of cards, the writing of booklets, the writing of tracts or things of that nature.
-
Doing these, we may find help for the body.
-
Ready for questions.
-
(Q) What is the cause of the chronic intestinal disturbance, and the trouble with the right kidney? (A) The poor circulation. That’s why (and the overacidity) - that’s why these applications are indicated, the small amounts of acid-producing foods in the diet, and the external anti-producing-acid packs for the absorption of the body.
Also we find it would be well to take a few drops of Glyco-Thymoline internally each day, three to five drops in a glass of water.
- (Q) What is wrong with the right hip joint, causing great difficulty in walking? (A) The general distress through the locomotories, which arises from reflexes in brain.
Do these things as we have outlined, but be patient and be consistent. Don’t begin these unless you expect to keep them up for at least a year.
- We are through with this Reading.

Reports & Follow-up
R1. 8/4/43 Mrs. [3110]‘s ltr. to EC:
Dear Mr. Cayce:
After a consultation with Dr. Lulu Waters about the reading which you gave for me on July 26 (4:05 to 4:15 P.M., E.W.T.), and upon her advice, I am writing to express our disappointment and bewilderment over the diagnosis. There is no mention of the arthritic condition from which I have suffered for many years, and only two of the questions I asked were put to you, according to the record. I wanted particularly to know if there are any active focal points of infection, and that remains unanswered. In fact, the diagnosis does not seem to apply to my condition as I know it, and sounds almost as though it were the description of another patient, who is afflicted with a different malady. It raises the question as to whether a mistake could have been made in the location of the subject.
When I applied for a reading, I had two very strong motives. One, naturally, was to gain some accurate information as to my present condition, and the other to contribute something of value to the Association’s researches and quest for enlightenment. As I told you, my arthritis is of long standing and has been under the observation of numerous specialists. Since arthritis has an even higher incidence than heart disease in the general public health, and is on the increase, it would seem imperative to gain all the knowledge we can about its cause and cure. You with your remarkable gift are in a position to make a contribution of incalculable value in regard to the physical and psychological causes of this malady, as well as suggestions for its prevention and treatment. By this means many could be saved life-times of suffering and crippled helplessness.
The reference to a brain lesion is completely baffling, and no examination I have ever had has shown the slightest indication of heart trouble. The course of treatment which was prescribed is utterly out of the question for us to carry out, even if we were financially able to pay for the daily hours of administration required. It would be impossible at this time of medical emergency to find a properly trained person to carry out the instructions for the length of time necessary.
Dr. Waters and I both feel that the case has not been adequately covered, and that further consideration should be given to it.
Sincerely yours, [3110]
R2. 8/12/43 EC’s letter to [3110]: ”…Thank you for yours of the fourth. I am sorry to know that you and the doctor are not pleased with the advice given. I wish you would have the doctor write me, and we will see what is obtained.
Thanking you and hoping that we may be of a real service,…”
R3. 8/17/43 Dr. Lulu Irene Water’s letter to EC: ”…Hope you and yours are well these days. We have had it very, very hot here in Washington, D.C.
I had a phone message from Mr. […] [husband of [3110]] Sat. and I told him I would write you.
Mr. […] came to see me when he received the reading for Mrs. [3110] of …, Wash., D.C.
Mr. […] was quite upset because the reading had not definitely located some focal place of infection. He had asked for that particular information in one of his questions he said.
When I went to see Mrs. [3110] before they sent for the reading I realized it was a very difficult case.
I told them so frankly but also told them that if there was anything that had not been found I thought you could bring it to light.
That as far as my experience with your readings were concerned, that if I followed them carefully that results had been obtained. I told him of how I treated Mrs. [808] and how she slept so well [See 808-17]. Then when she [808] came the second time and I was so pleased that I made the mistake of treating her too heavily and that the opposite effect occurred. Then when she wrote you and I realized in my desire to do well I had treated too heavily. I seemingly hardly treated her at all but that the desired effect was brought about.
When I read the report of Mrs. [3110]‘s case it seemed the brain lesion is the main cause.
I told Mr. […] that I thought the best way to get it straightened out was for him to write you again and that if you could see fit to take up the case just for a few moments to answer his question that I was sure you would do so. That your only motive was to help, that as he could see from the book concerning your life that you had only tried to be of service to mankind.
It is a pitiful case. Mr. […] trying to make a living, caring for her, doing all the house work etc. I think it would be better if she were in a home even the home for incurables where she could get care and would not have to be there alone, while Mr. […] is away.
It is a very impracticable arrangement and he just would not have time to do more than he does now, in the way of caring for her. You surely hit it when you told her to transfer her thoughts on the helping of others.
I talked to her a long time when I went to see her. She has a feeling that she didn’t have the proper love and care when she was a child. She should have had a Psychiatrist, when she was young. Perhaps that is the tumor, a mental tumor. I tried to talk her out of some of her ideas but I didn’t get far. I told Mr. […] that if she would follow the suggestions you gave for her mental help it would be good.
I felt very sorry for them both. It seems they are devoted to each other. Their past lives if read might be of great help to the tangled knot they are in but I do not think they are either of them ready for that suggestion. They are clinging so desperately to this life. There is such a pressure of will there. I was tired out when left after talking to her about 1-1/2 hrs. She thinks she has some ideas on how children should develop, ideas that she should get into written form.
The getting rid of the ideas might relax her tension but I am afraid her vision is limited but after all I am not the judge.
If there is any way you could help them I am sure it would be appreciated. Tell them whether there is or is not a focal point of infection. Mr. […] in his limited time can not do much more in caring for her than he is doing.
He has no resources to draw from, if he gets sick everything is out.
What ever their mission was for this life they seem to be caught in a groove.
Do not think I was dissatisfied with the reading, I told Mr. […] to write so that he might be satisfied.
It is a difficult case I expect you have many where the mental is so confused with the physical it is hard to disconnect them. Hope I may meet you some time…”
R4. 8/20/43 EC’s letter to Dr. Lulu I. Waters: ”…I want to thank you very much for yours of the seventeenth. I feel very sure that I understood the trouble with Mrs. [3110] and I just desired to have a verification or correction of this from you. For, of course, we believe in the information implicitly, yet, even after forty years, I desire to see it checked up just as it has been done in this case.
Please ask Mr. […] to write me again and I will try to see if I can correct his mind and I do hope that we can help.
Thanking you very much and I am still looking forward to having a talk with you…”
R5. 8/20/43 [3110]‘s husband’s letter to EC: ”…On behalf of my wife, [3110], I am writing to tell you that I have communicated with Dr. Lulu Waters, as you suggested in your letter of August 12. She was about to leave for a month’s vacation, but assured me that she would write to you about the reading from her point of view.
Our disappointment over the reading arises from the fact that specific questions submitted were not put to you during your examination of the body. We particularly wish to know the present stage of the MULTIPLE ARTHRITIS DEFORMANS from which Mrs. [3110] has suffered for many years - the conditions of ALL the joints, the reason for the restricted raising movement of the left arm, the cause of the persistent intestinal disturbance, and the reason for the deterioration of the right hip joint. Most important of all - are there any ACTIVE focal points of infection, such as nose, mastoid process, throat, teeth, etc.?
The absence of any mention of arthritis in the reading left us bewildered. Since the reading was given, I have learned that there is a seriously ill lady in the apartment directly below ours, and I am wondering if there could have been an error in locating the patient. Our apartment is …”
R6. 8/26/43 EC’s letter to [3110]‘s husband: ”…I have yours of the 20th. I am sorry to know there is some question in your mind about the reading for your wife. I have had a letter from Dr. Waters. I think we understand the situation very well. I believe the suggestions offered would be of a real help if you could see your way to have these carried out. However, we will undertake for you a check on this the first possible opportunity which is Sunday afternoon, Sept. 19.
Will you please make a list of questions. You and Mrs. [3110] possibly will want to get together on this and let us see if we can clarify this for you.
Hoping that you will be satisfied, and hoping to be of a real service, I am, with every good wish…”
R7. 9/5/43 [3110]‘s letter to EC: ”…Replying to your letter of August 26th to Mr. […] I wish to express my appreciation of your cooperation in making a check on my reading, and I shall hold myself in readiness on the day you have set: Sunday afternoon, September 19.
You see, I know so very well WHAT my disease is - multiple arthritis deformans - because I have lived with it for more than forty years. The original center of infection was removed by a major operation, and I fear that my partial relapse may possibly be due to a new focal infection. My hope is that your reading will disclose the present status of the disease. This knowledge is desired not only for my own relief but also for the value it may have for other sufferers. So little is known about the causes and treatment of arthritis, which is one of the most prevalent diseases and statistically on the increase.
I am convinced that my own case has roots in psychological and spiritual factors operative before my birth and that it was aggravated by these same factors during my impressionable childhood years. I believe that this angle has been overlooked by the medical profession, and that its investigation is of vital importance in the PREVENTION as well as the treatment of the disease. My own battle against complete incapacity has been long, ceaseless and desperate, and if, through investigation of my case, others can be saved from what I have suffered through ignorance and wrong treatment, I shall feel that it has not been entirely in vain.
These are the questions which I would like to have answered:
- Are there any active focal points of infection in ear, mastoid, nose, throat, teeth, kidney or intestine?
- What is the condition developing in the left shoulder joint which causes an increasing restriction of movement?
- What prevents the straightening of both elbows?
- What has taken place in the deformed hands?
- What causes the chronic intestinal looseness?
- To what extent is the right hip joint becoming restricted in movement?
A thorough physical check-up seems to be indicated, as the general condition is slowly progressing toward a state of complete helplessness. Above all things, I am seeking for the truth…”

Mr. Edgar Cayce Virginia Beach, Virginia
Dear Mr. Cayce:
Your wonderful mission has just been brought to my notice through Thomas Sugrue’s book, THERE IS A RIVER. I am writing to inquire the proper procedure in application for a reading. Is a detailed case history necessary or helpful to you?
I have been for many years a victim of multiple arthritis deformans, and at the present time my condition is definitely becoming more aggravated. During the last few years I have been able to do less and less for myself, and now I have practically lost the raising motion of my left arm.
I am enclosing a stamped, self-addressed envelope for any instructions that may be required.
Sincerely, [3110]
B2. 6/18/43 Letter to EC: ”…Dr. Lulu Waters has just left my bedside, and upon her advice I am applying immediately for a Physical Reading, so that I may have it at the earliest possible moment, as I am in a very nervous and depressed state of mind.
You will note that Dr. Waters herself has witnessed and recommended my application. May I request a complete physical check up during the reading, from the hair of my head to the soles of my feet? You see, I am just plain sick ALL OVER, and becoming more and more helpless.
I was very sorry to learn that you had not been well. I trust you are now fully recovered and able to continue your great humanitarian work.”
Hopefully yours, Mrs. [3110]
“Application and money order enclosed.”
B3. 7/3/43 [3110]‘s letter to EC: ”…Your letter of July 1st greatly relieved my anxiety in regard to the reading for which I sent an application with money order on June 20th last. What could have caused such a delay in your receiving it? I am positive that it was correctly addressed. Also I am very grateful that you made it possible for me to have the reading at so early a date, and accept it gladly for Monday, July 26th, at 3:30 to 4:30 P.M., E.W.T.
Unless some unforeseen catastrophe occurs, I shall be where I usually am at that hour, propped up in bed in my room at the end of the hall in our apartment, …, Washington, D.C. I have been practically confined to my bed for quite a long time.
There are many questions I should like to ask in regard to my condition, as you will no doubt realize when the reading is given. Since my case is one of multiple arthritis deformans, that literally means EVERY part of my body is affected. But for the time being I shall confine myself to the following:
- What is the condition now painfully active in the left shoulder and arm, making it almost useless? What treatment should be given?
- What is the cause of the chronic intestinal disturbance, and the trouble with the right kidney?
- What is wrong with the right hip joint, causing great difficulty in walking?
- What conditions do you find in both shoulders, elbows, hands and fingers?
- What is the condition of spine, knees and feet?
- Are there any active focal points of infection in any part of the body that can be treated?
As you may gather from these questions, I am in a very bad way and becoming more helpless right along. It is probably no news to you that the medical profession is unable to do much in cases like mine, but I am convinced the COMPLETE history of it would present some very informative data, both physical and psychological. I shall be glad to cooperate in any way I can, if the Association for Research would care to have me. Thanking you again…”
