This Psychic Reading given by Edgar Cayce at the office of the Association, Arctic Crescent, Virginia Beach, Va., this 22nd day of March, 1942, in accordance with request made by the self - Mrs. [808], Active Member of the Ass”n for Research & Enlightenment, Inc.
[Edgar Cayce; Gertrude Cayce, Conductor; Gladys Davis, Steno.]
Time of Reading 11:30 to 11:40 A. M. Eastern War Time. …, Va.
-
GC: You will give the physical condition of this body at the present time, with further suggestions for corrective measures; answering the questions, as I ask them:
-
EC: Yes, we have the body here, [808].
-
As we find, there are acute conditions in the disturbances of the glandular system.
-
These are producing the pains through the abdomen and pelvis, as well as headaches, inability of relaxation, the insomnia, as well as general weakness.
-
We find that a thorough, GENTLE relaxation osteopathically would be the quicker way to obtain relief from the acute condition.
-
We would have such from the one that we have indicated here.
-
The injections that are being prepared or given we would take for a long period.
-
But we would have a thorough, gentle relaxing osteopathic treatment at least each week.
-
Do not take the Tonicine too much, but the doses that have been taken are very well to work with the rest of those things given.
-
Occasionally, once in ten days, we would have the hydrotherapy; to aid in keeping the eliminations - because of the disturbed conditions by the upsetting in the elimination system, due to the clogging in the glandular forces.
-
Do these.
-
Ready for questions.
-
(Q) On several occasions when these distresses have been most prominent, there has come a dull ache and heaviness around heart. What causes this? (A) This is the general depletion from the stimulations without the better relaxations. Thus, as first indicated here, the quicker relief, and to keep the organs in better shape, would be a thorough osteopathic relaxation, see?
-
(Q) Should I take the Eschetin injections oftener? (A) Not oftener, but DO have the osteopathic RELAXING treatment, see? and especially the relaxing through the lumber and sacral area, and from the 9th dorsal down; coordinating from 9th dorsal up WITH those relaxings in the lower areas.
-
(Q) The dentist filled a cavity between the last two teeth on lower right jaw, but there’s still a sensitiveness there? Is it alright now? (A) This will eventually be alright. This is part of the general nerve tension, as we find.
If the nerve tension continues, it may be necessary to remove and have some further treatments before the filling, see?
- (Q) Any further suggestions to build the glandular and nervous system to normalcy, and as to how to keep it that way? (A) Do these, as we find in the present.
Keep close to sufficient exercise when there have been the relaxings; not so much as to overtire, but to make the body rest better.
If the osteopathic treatments are taken late in the afternoon it will be the better for the body, see?
- We are through with this Reading.

R1. 3/24/42 [808]‘s letter to EC:
Dear Edgar:
Aren’t you tired of getting letters from me? Gosh, I’m making up for two months correspondence. I want to be sure that I’m doing everything just right in the reading so hope you don’t mind me bothering you for suggestions.
[2784] called Dr. Waters this morning and she does not take patients on Sat. afternoon or Sunday and her last appointment during the day is at 5:30. I don’t get off until 5:30 but could take annual leave. [1935] said it takes a good hour to get up there around that time as the buses and street cars are so jammed and sometimes you can’t even get on. Dr. Waters was extremely nice when I talked to her - she said if I’m going to wear myself out getting to her and home, the treatment wouldn’t be very beneficial and suggested that I go to a friend of hers, Dr. Felix D. Swope in Alexandria. I explained the treatment ordered and she said she would call Dr. Swope and tell him she has followed these readings with wonderful results and ask him to follow instructions as indicated in mine for me. After all this planning, etc., after I talked to her, I read my reading again and noticed it said “We would have such from the one that we have indicated here.” So, now I don’t know whether to get in touch with Dr. Swope or not. Another thing, Dr. Waters couldn’t take me at 5:30 before next Tuesday and that’s a long time to wait to get some SLEEP!! However, the object of this letter is to ask you what you think about it. If you think it is better to have Dr. Waters, I most certainly will arrange to have her somehow. However, if you think it would be better to have Dr. Swope in Alex. which would be a lot less effort to get to, I will have him providing he is willing to follow instructions. This Dr. Waters is near where we lived on … St. and of course we live in the opposite directions now. I do hate to bother you like this but I know how terribly important it is to follow the reading exactly and want to do the things that will be best for me and that will snap me out of this as quickly as possible. So don’t you hesitate to tell me HONESTLY what you think and I will be guided by your suggestions.
Thanks again, lots of love [808]
I will call Dr. Swope tonight and have a treatment, if possible, but if you think I should have Dr. Waters write me, I will change and have her. I’m sure she will understand and Dr. Swope need not know that I have gone to her.
R2. 4/2/42 [808]‘s letter to EC:
Dear Edgar:
Received all your letters and words would fail to express how much I appreciated them. I was feeling pretty low all last week and by Saturday felt that if I didn’t get some sleep soon, well I don’t know what, but I was desperate. And then I received your sweet letter on Saturday, which helped considerably. When I received your letters on Friday urging me to have Dr. Waters, I cancelled my appointment with Dr. Swope and decided that I would take some time off on Monday and go to Dr. Waters. I figured I was SAVING TIME by doing that because I couldn’t have kept up much longer working every day and walking the floors nights. Anyway, I had an appointment for 4:30 so took leave from 3:30. Dr. Waters was extremely nice and so VERY, VERY interested. She read the reading very carefully examining me as she was doing it, and said she knew exactly what you wanted me to have. She said the glands in my neck were all filled up and my back (where you indicated) needed treatment badly. Anyway, she taped my back afterward for posture (my posture isn’t right and she wanted to remind me to sit and stand correctly and also showed me how to massage glands on my neck every night before retiring. Well, anyway, I got home at 8:10, went to bed at 9:00 or rather got ready for bed and lay on the studio couch in the den to listen to the symphony over the radio - got so sleepy went to bed and slept like a baby. Have been sleeping every night since and needless to say have felt so much better. My boss said he doesn’t know what I DID on Monday when I got off but whatever it was it must have done me a lot of good because I sure looked better. Dr. Waters seemed so much interested and she said she wished I didn’t live so far away so I could get to her as she would like to follow it through, and I told her I wanted her to and would take leave every Monday. I don’t want to change right now especially since I’ve had such an amazing good result from the first treatment.
Thanks a lot for the suggestion about burning the liquor. I burned 2 jiggerfuls Friday night which left one jigger but nothing seemed to relax me Friday. Even had a can of beer and it didn’t have any effect on me. However, I’m glad to know about it although won’t need it now…
If all the osteopaths have the faith in you as Dr. Waters, I can well understand the results. You don’t have to sell her a bill of goods - she is already sold. She told me if the readings are followed exactly and the patient cooperates with her, YOU WILL GET RESULTS!! However, needless to say, she didn’t have to convince me.
R3. 4/10/42 [808]‘s letter to EC:
Dear Edgar:
Received your letter last night and it was so nice hearing from you. Hope Edgar Evans will be located near you so he can get home once in awhile - Or rather hope this war ends soon so he will be home PERMANENTLY! It surely looks black right now. However, they say it always looks blackest before the dawn, so the only thing we can do is hope and pray.
Went up to see Dr. Waters again on Monday, and she was just elated with the improvement in me. She said she never saw anyone improve so quickly. I slept every night last week but on Sunday night before my treatment on Monday started with insomnia again and have had it every night since until last night. Isn’t that funny? However, I wasn’t as bad as previously so am not putting any significance in it except a slight reverse. I broke all records the first week and I guess that was a little too much to expect. Really though, Dr. Waters is correcting my posture and everyone has noticed that. That makes such a difference in the way one looks and she claims in the way one feels too. She thinks that will help me a lot. I am going to continue with her for awhile but then she thinks I’m about ready to release I will try Dr. Swope for a couple of treatments and acquaint him with the readings. We will see how he carries them out too.
Did you have a nice Easter? It was about 90 here in the shade, believe it or not. I went to church in the morning, but you know I get a lot more out of listening to the several sermons over the radio that I usually make a point to hear than going to church. My mind wanders in church and the minister just can’t hold my attention. Or, I get more out of the Bible lessons from you - I just love them and when I start on them hate to stop. I know I shouldn’t say that about going to church, but I’m just telling you.
We are looking forward to our trip to the beach - Or at least I am counting the days - Hope our tires hold out.
Must quit - write when you can and hope this finds you all well.
Love to all from us both, [808]
R4. 4/23/42 [808]‘s letter to EC:
Dear Edgar:
This gorgeous spring day - What I wouldn’t give to be starting for Virginia Beach. Hmmmmmmmm, that would be so wonderful!
Received your letter and glad to hear that Edgar Evans is home for a week. I know how happy that makes all of you and I do hope he isn’t sent too far off. That must have been a strenuous course that he took, and probably would have been interesting if it weren’t for the destructive part of it. Well, we sure wish Edgar Evans the best of luck wherever he goes.
Well, I had my 4th treatment last Monday from Dr. Waters. She is so extremely nice and certainly has taken an interest in me. I told her I didn’t feel as though I was getting much better - I get to feeling better for a few days and then bingo, I’m right back on my heels again. She thinks, though, that my nerves were in such a condition that it will take some time to build them up to normal. She says there definitely is an improvement and she can see it. I stayed in bed all day yesterday with the exception of sitting in the sun for a few hours during the afternoon and last night I slept like a baby and felt some better this morning although I’m still tired. I think if I could rest more, get out in the fresh air and sunshine, I would get to feeling better. We get off so late it is even difficult for me to get to walk and I’m usually so tired when I do I’m ready to drop. So, I don’t think it is the fault of the reading (NEVER THAT) but just that I can’t seem to get the rest and exercise that the readings have often indicated that I should have. Perhaps the week we spend at Virginia Beach will be the best pick-up. In the meantime I will keep up my treatments. It isn’t so bad going up to Dr. Waters - It is better for me to go up there than to take someone that wouldn’t carry out the instructions. Not that they would do it intentionally, but just not understand it well enough to know that it has to be exactly as indicated. I get home about 8:30 but I stop downtown and eat dinner and that helps break the trip. I don’t think it would be possible for anyone to take the interest that Dr. Waters has taken - She certainly has been nice.
I wish too we could be in your Sunday School Class - I know I could get [2784] to hear you. I listened over the radio last Sunday and enjoyed it very much. Still love the lessons - They make everything so clear and understanding.
R5. 4/28/42 [2784]‘s letter to EC:
Dear Edgar:
Received your letter and it sure is nice hearing from you. Needless to say, we look forward to your letters. Gosh, you sure have been busy - planting an orchard, etc. Isn’t Gladys going to build on that lot? I guess they would have difficulty getting the materials right now. How beautiful it will look - Sure hope you get some rain so they don’t die.
What a surprise about Edgar Evans - A Lieutenant and a chance to continue his studies for three months - Why how perfectly wonderful. You indicated that the readings thus far worked perfectly with him - Did you have a reading on this? Do tell us all about it, we are so terribly interested. Sure will be glad when we can come to the Beach and get all these things first hand. It is rather difficult writing all the details in letters. We are delighted for him, and so interested to hear how he makes out.
Last night was night for Dr. Waters again and you know, Edgar, I believe something something has definitely gone wrong. Either she gives me too strenuous a treatment or I’m not doing something I should. The first Monday night I went to her and I went home and slept all night and every night that week until the Sunday before the next treatment. She said I just couldn’t hold it a week and that was fine that I had gotten such quick results and I too was amazed. Well from the second treatment on, every Monday night I’m so tired when I get home I’m actually ill, and just can’t get to sleep. Last night [2784] got up at 3:00 to give me an injection. I had gotten up at 2:00 and had a hot shower, drank beer sometime during the night and hot milk and this morning felt as though I had been through the war. Last week I was the same way - Tuesday I was just exhausted and Wednesday I couldn’t get up at all. I have looked over over my reading again and it said it should relax me so I can sleep, not to tire me like that. [2784] says I’m worse since I’ve been going to her and declares he isn’t going to let me continue with them. However, Dr. Waters is so extremely nice and if it hasn’t worked with me it is probably because she has worked so hard on me and is so anxious to make me well. She said last night too that she can’t understand why I’m not reacting better. I hate to call her and tell her that I’m not going to continue - I feel like a traitor because I don’t want her to think it is the fault of the reading. I really can’t understand either why I improved the first week to such an extent and then the following weeks just had the opposite reaction. Doesn’t that sort of indicate that maybe the other treatments were a little bit too strenuous for me? I’m such a nuisance and I do hate to bother you so - If all your patients worried you like I do, you probably would have gone back to photography long ago.
I do feel as though I need more rest and confidentially am planning very seriously on resigning in July. It would be so wonderful to be able to get out in the sun and air when I want to and I do think it will help build up my nerves and glands probably more than anything else in the world. This working so late every night keeps me in practically all the time and my readings have indicated right along that fresh air and sunshine were very important from the standpoint of my well-being. Don’t mention this to anyone because I haven’t announced it as yet and don’t want to get to my office until I tell my bosses. They have been so terribly nice tome in this office that I wouldn’t do anything that wouldn’t be just right. So, anyway, if I can just hold out 60 more days, perhaps I will have a rest!!!! I hope!!!!
I am looking forward too to coming to the Beach and if there is any way possible for us to come, we aren’t going to miss it! Will let you know more about that later. Hope you all are well and do write when you can.
Love from us both to all, [808]
P.S. Say, did you get the tie???? I sent it last week, BELIEVE IT OR NOT!!!
R6. 5/1/42 EC’s letter to [808]:
Dear [808]:-
Have yours of the 28th. Don’t like the reactions to the treatments at all - suggest to Dr. Waters that I say for her to read the reading over again before the next treatment and if you don’t feel better after that treatment don’t do it again. Will check up after that treatment and see what the reading says is the trouble. Do hope tho she will find it and that you will feel lots better.
Yes E. E. is so crazy about the school too, but he has always liked school - just hope he makes good to the Glory of God and the Honor of his country.
You will just have to come to the Beach and stay a while - believe if you could get out in this wonderful sunshine you would be better.
Didn’t I thank you for the package with the tie? My oh my, please forgive me it was lovely. Thank you a million times - will wear that when have my picture made for the book.
Do hope you are better - please try Dr. Waters the one more time with the above suggestion.
With love for each of you from all here,
Edgar
R7. 5/6/42 [808]‘s letter to EC:
Dear Edgar:
Was going to write you yesterday and promised Dr. Waters that I would, but thought I would wait until today to see what kind of a night I had last night. I took your letter and the reading to Dr. Waters and explained the situation to her exactly as I did to you. She read the reading over very carefully and said she probably had been over-anxious for me to get well as I had improved so rapidly the first week. She gave me a treatment exactly as the first one and so far I have slept fine and felt much better this morning. I really hated to say anything to Dr. Waters as she tried so hard on me - She said she put everything she had in my treatments but that was too much for me! I told her that it seemed as though everything you ordered for me was in a very light form
- As a matter of fact it is so light at times that it seems as though it wouldn’t have any effect, but the minute a heavier treatment was given I go downhill instead of up. She understood perfectly - said she noticed I was super sensitive and from now on will handle me very gently. It is so different when the relaxing treatment is given - I don’t feel under a strain and not exhausted as I did when the strenuous treatment was given. Anyway, I think we have found the difficulty, thanks to you, and I’m sure from here on we won’t have any further trouble. I told her to keep the copy of the reading, which I should have done the first time. Knew you would be anxious to hear, so thus this note.
R8. 5/7/42 EC’s letter to [808]:
Dear [808]:
Thanks for yours of the 6th - am so happy and glad for you as well as happy to know you got the cooperation of Dr. Waters - so many do not wish to be told by an outsider how to treat a patient, but am so glad to know that you got the cooperation of Dr. Waters. There are quite a number of Osteopaths throughout the country that have taken such advice from the readings and gotten wonderful - and quite a few that have immediately said the - so-so with the readings they knew what they were doing. Tell Dr. Waters thank you for me and that I just had a lovely letter from Dr. Still [Fred M. Still, D.O.?] at Macon on just such a thing - and to me he is tops in the profession, a son I believe of the Originator of the profession a man whom I had treat me once - many say that is why I am partial to the Osteopaths. But, BUT the thing to you is the results you get from the treatments.
Sure would like to walk in on you all, wonder when will find the chance sure would like to see you.
From letter to day from E. E. he is well pleased with the work where he is - and believe he plans to be married the 13th of June, so he must have learned something else in the army.
Thanks for letting me know, all fair here
Love to you both, Edgar
R9. 5/25/42 [808]‘s letter to EC:
Dear Edgar:
Received your letter and were we surprised to hear about Edgar - Isn’t that wonderful? Now you will have another daughter! Where is the wedding going to take place - at Virginia Beach? Am so anxious to hear all the details. Edgar Evans is a fine boy and the girl that is getting him is a mighty lucky one, believe me. I mean that too. Well, anyway, we wish him all the luck and happiness in the world.
Have been intending to write you all week but last week was quite a busy one. I’m feeling much, much better and am so delighted as is Dr. Waters and, of course, [2784]. [2784] and my boss tell me I’m getting sassy again and that is a good sign. Oh, it is wonderful to feel better. Dr. Waters laments the fact that we wasted all those weeks on that strenuous treatment that almost put me under, but it just stresses the point that the readings have to be carried out exactly as indicated and even the doctors can’t use their own judgement. She wanted to give me all she had, she said, and that was just too much for me. She laughs after my treatment she says if she doesn’t put me to sleep she is about ready to sleep herself. She is so accustomed to giving a heavy treatments that the treatment she gives me is really a lot more difficult for her because it is so slow and easy. She laughs about it. Says I’m the most sensitive person she has ever worked on. [8/17/43 See Dr. Waters’ account under 3110-1 Reports.]
I had my treatment at the Sanitarium yesterday (hydrotherapy) and it was wonderful too. I was practically asleep when the girl finished with me. Went home and was in bed by 10:30 and asleep shortly after. Isn’t it wonderful to sleep?
Don’t know when we can come to the beach but sure hope it will be soon. We are so anxious to see you all.
[2784] is busy right now putting in a flagstone walk in front of the house and oh what a time he is having. I really feel sorry for him. He wants the yard fixed up so thought he better do that. It is almost impossible to get anyone to do anything - everyone has a job.
Can’t think of any news - Do hope you are all well and will be anxious to hear all about the wedding.
Love from us both to all, [808]

R10. 6/16/42 EC’s letter to [808] and [2784]:
Dear [808] and [2784]:
Came very near calling you the other day - Saturday night and have you meet the plane from Norfolk - E. E. and his wife left here on the 6:10 plane going back to Boston, but didn’t think of it in time to get you. By the way what is your telephone number - or how does one get in touch with you quickly? The little girl he married is a very pretty sweet little girl - she was a Miss Kathryne Bane - everyone calls her Kat, had a very sweet church wedding. He had hard time getting here - took plane from Boston and the plane was grounded in Washington - he had to take Taxi from there to Norfolk but he got three other boys to share the trip with him - they got back to Boston at 2:30 Sunday morning.
Thanks - the response from so many who will be with us Friday Morning 10:30 to 10:45 leads me to believe we will receive real inspiration. Only wish both of you could be with us in person. Yes am sure can get your gas for you with your card, have a very good friend who takes care of us.
Will be glad to see Mrs. [264] - but sure wish you might be here - but will be looking for you when you can come. My oh my will be happy to see [2784]‘s Life reading - am wondering where we met before. Am sure must have been several places. Got my own Aura Chart last Sunday and it is a honey [294-206]
- hope to have it all painted up by the time you are here - they are certainly interesting drawings.
Glad you are feeling better - you were right taking periods of rest. That is the best way to get real results from the treatments. Tell Dr. Waters we received recognition from the Still-Hildreth Sanitarium a few weeks ago - that is the highest honor have ever had paid me.
Better bring your niece to the Beach with you - hope she has nice visit and you keep feeling good and both of you hurry and come to the Beach.
With love to you both from all, Edgar
R11. 7/17/42 Husband, [2784], obtained a Life Reading.
R12. 7/20/42 She had her Life Reading - See 808-18.
R13. 10/21/42 “I often wonder, as [2390] said in her last letter to me, how I would have been had I had a reading immediately when I was born and raised according to it. I know one thing, I probably wouldn’t have been poisoned! [See 808-1 Reports.] And that would have been wonderful!
R14. 11/13/42 “I have been intending to write you for a long time about Adiron. [2784] got me a bottle this year again and it only contains the iron. Did you know that? It doesn’t say anything on the wrapper about the vitamins it contained heretofore. I’m taking one a day anyway for the iron, and in addition to that I’m taking the Haliver Oil with Viosterol (Vitamin A and D) and White’s Vitamin B’s. I thought that should keep me protected. The Adiron apparently [formerly Codiron] has been taken over by a different concern. Probably that is the reason. Thought you would like to know this.”
R15. 11/27/42 EC’s letter: “Yes, I knew about the Adiron. The readings haven’t given it any more since it has changed hands and they have a new formula. Think that what you are taking should be all o.k. but the ‘information’ [through the readings] gives different people different brands, don’t know why not as universal as Adiron used to be.”
R16. 1/5/43 “My case is mentioned in the book - not my name, but I recognized the reference to it.” [See page 347 of THERE IS A RIVER in re the daily mail, including that day a letter from “A young woman in Washington, D.C., who was cured by the readings of lead poisoning caused by a depilatory (since removed from the market by the Bureau of Pure Foods and Drugs). She had been overworking, felt tired, and asked for a check reading [See 808-15].”
R17. 1/27/43 “I saw our mutual friend Dr. Waters last week and she was so excited when she learned that I had a life reading. She insisted that I read hers and it was wonderful. There were parts of it that she didn’t understand and how I wished I could have explained it to her. The next time I’m going to take mine. I had a set-back, expect it was the glands as I felt exactly as described in my last physical, so am following that reading and having treatments as indicated. Dr. Waters is so careful now after the difficulty we had before. She said she wouldn’t do anything different that you prescribed for anything in the world. I wish you could meet her - She is so wonderful.”
R18. 4/19/43 EC’s ltr. to [257]: ”…Think the person you mean in D.C. who had the poison from depilatory [she used] to take the hair from under her arms…is [808].”
