This psychic reading given by Edgar Cayce at 1867 Kalorama Road, Washington, D.C., this 2nd day of February, 1935, in accordance with request made by the self - Mrs. [808], new Active Member of the Ass”n for Research & Enlightenment, Inc., recommended by Miss [681].
[Edgar Cayce; Gertrude Cayce, Conductor; Gladys Davis, Steno. Mrs. [808] and Mr. [2784].]
Time of Reading 11:00 to 11:25 A. M. Eastern Standard Time. Washington, D.C. (Physical Suggestion)
-
EC: Yes, we have the body here, [808].
-
Now, as we find, there are conditions that disturb the better physical functioning of the body. These have to do with the manner in which the glands function as related to the sympathetic nervous system, producing at times those irritations to membranes in the system as to cause at periods some very disturbing reactions.
-
Then, these are the conditions as we find them with this body, [808] we are speaking of, present in this room:
-
First, we find the BLOOD SUPPLY changes very often as to the manner in which it circulates through the system, owing to the nervous condition that affects the pulsation or the activities through the system, and the manner in which the centers in the nervous forces - as related to the activities in the motory centers - react to the varying conditions in the system.
-
In the NERVOUS SYSTEM may be said to be the seat of disturbance; rather it is the channel through which the reactions come to the system, the glands and THEIR effect upon the system being the cause or seat or that from which these affectations to the circulation and nervous system arise.
-
The ORGANS themselves in their functioning are very good, save at those periods when there are the reactions from the incoordinating of the physical reactions to the gland secretions and their effect upon the nervous system; but when these ARE disturbed, most all of the organic systems at times become involved in the disturbing forces of the body.
-
Then, in meeting the conditions as we would find for this body, [808], we are speaking of, present in this room, we would:
-
Begin with the application of the diathermy in a very light form, alternating from period to period the plates or centers from the secondary cardiac plexus, or the 3rd and 4th dorsal center, and the 9th and 10th dorsal center, and in the lumbar plexus, or to those areas from which the torso portion is affected - or through which the motor axis of the nervous system as related to the glands’ activity upon the body affects the system. So, the first would be in the upper dorsal with the lumbar plexus; the next application would be from the solar plexus center or 9th dorsal and the motor axis - or in the 3rd cervical center. These treatments we would take about three times each week.
-
Also each day we would equalize such vibration by the use of the Radio-Active Appliance. This would be to equalize the motivative activity through the nerve forces and blood circulation, as to make for that assimilated to be more properly coordinated throughout the whole system. This appliance would be attached in the usual manner to opposite extremities of the body, for thirty to forty minutes each day, preferably as the body is ready for retiring, to the opposite sides of the body; that is, to the right wrist and left ankle, and when to the left wrist the next day attach to the right ankle, rotating in this manner about the body. Be sure the attachments are intact and kept clean. There will not be any effect - that is, any vibration felt; but after the body applies same in the course of two or three days the effects IN the body may be felt, you see.
-
We would take internally only the atomic iodine, or Atomidine, in very minute quantities. Take one minim twice each day, before the morning meal and before retiring, in half a glass of water. This will be acted upon in the system by the vibrations set up both by the high or the deep therapy from the diathermy applications, and the very low vibrations that would be received through the Radio-Active Appliance.
-
Be mindful that what is assimilated or taken for assimilation in the body is nerve and blood building, in a well-balanced way and manner. Not an excess of any one element, yet it will be found that when the starches and the proteins are combined these will be better than the sugars or carbohydrates with either of these. Hence keeping these well-balanced will make for the better assimilations to be activative with those influences in the system as created by the activity of the electrical vibrations, that stimulate from the axis of the nervous forces and circulations of the body.
-
Do these and, as we find - while there will be periods of recurrent conditions, if these will be adhered to - those reactions that have been had in various activities of the glands in the torso, through the pelvic organs, those activities throughout the system, will clarify themselves. For to create the balance in the body that the system may adjust itself may be the slower method, but it will be the more EFFECTIVE and sure way of approach.
-
Ready for questions.
-
(Q) How long should this treatment be followed? (A) For three weeks and then a rest period of a week; then two weeks and then a rest period of two weeks; then three weeks.
-
(Q) How long will it take to build up the thyroid? (A) The activities of the other glands have drawn upon those secretions in the system that affect through the thyroid system, see, those to be effective in building up. Though we will find recurrent actions, to be sure, there should be relief from even the first of the applications; and we should in the course of the treatments as outlined be entirely rid of the disturbing conditions.
-
(Q) What should I do to help this nervous condition and extreme headaches that I have? (A) The headaches come from or at those periods when the effects of the gland secretions are not assimilated, and pound upon the nervous system to produce the headaches. But we would equalize same through equalizing the circulation in the manner indicated. Not as sediments for the system, but when these headaches come on - attach the Radio-Active Appliance to the extremities and sleep it off!
-
(Q) Will it be all right to have Dr. Bolkhardt [M. Bolkhardt, N.D., Ph.T.] for the diathermy treatments or the Washington Sanitarium [and Hospital, Takoma Park, Washington, D.C.]? (A) Dr. Bolkhardt may apply the diathermy. The Radio-Active Appliance may be used each evening at home.
-
(Q) Is there anything wrong with my heart? (A) Nothing wrong with the heart, save those conditions that have been indicated when the taxation to the system PREVENTS the circulation from being REGULAR. It pounds too fast and at others it becomes too slow, as indicated. This is PURELY FUNCTIONAL and NOT organic. For, as indicated, there are TIMES when most of the organs BECOME involved; also there is the nervous tension created by the improper functioning of the glands through the body.
-
(Q) Is it necessary for me to take any more metabolisms? (A) Not after the second treatment period; for we will find these will be too severe, and the dread that has come from same has been a shock to the nervous system. But as we take the Atomidine in the manner indicated, we will find that all of these conditions will gradually be quieted and built up by the general system. Nothing is more sure, if this will be consistently and persistently done. After these treatments have been taken for the second period, we would give further instructions - should there be the necessity for other changes.
-
(Q) How long will it be before I can physically be able to have a child? (A) In six months after the general system has been replenished or rebuilded, owing to the lack of the balances in the system. This, as we find, should occur - then - in six to nine months.
-
(Q) What causes the discomfort around my chest? (A) Reflexes from the circulation or flood at times of the blood supply through the lack of the muscular control, through the circulatory system. At others we have the smothery feeling from the contracting of the muscular forces, not allowing the circulation, the fullness and flush from too much contraction just the opposite, see?
Do these, as we have indicated, and - we will find - we will bring normal conditions for this body.
-
(Q) What exercise should the body take? (A) Not too great an amount, but in the open - walking is very good, and the like; NOT to excess such as to overtax the body in any direction.
-
(Q) Any other advice that would be of help to the body at this time? (A) Keep the mental attitude rather such that the body, the mind, the entity or soul will conduct itself in the light of divine guidance as to fullfil those purposes for which the soul came into this experience; knowing that those forces of creative energies manifesting through self are able, through the power in His name, to keep those promises He has given to those that serve Him.
-
We are through for the present.

Reports & Follow-up
R1. 2/22/35 See 808-2 advising that the diathermy treatments by Dr. Bolkhardt have been started correctly.
R2. 3/2/35 I am still on “the improve” as my check reading revealed and honestly it seems incredible that I would get so much relief in such a short time. I am so grateful to you and cannot shout my praises loud enough. You have done more for me in two weeks that the doctors were able to do in three years. My husband and I just talk about it all the time, and he is so happy about it. He said it was our lucky day when we came in contact with you. By the time my treatments are over with you won’t recognize me - I’ll be a different person!
We are looking forward to seeing you both in April and if it isn’t possible for you to come then we do hope your visit will be sometime in the near future.
R3. 4/23/35 [808]‘s letter:
Washington, D.C.
Dear Mr. Cayce:
Just a short note hurriedly - I have been having some difficulty and am going to ask your assistance.
I haven’t been any better since my last relapse and after having a bad night and feeling miserable this morning, I feel that something has gone wrong and would like for you to give me a check reading to find out. I applied the Radio Active last night for two hours and it seemed I was worse after the two hours than before - I finally had to take a dose of nerve medicine and a sleeping pill and went to sleep toward morning. I have had quite a few nights like that last week and the week before, which all have been after the second treatment period and it seems to me that after I have a diathermy I get worse. Wouldn’t that indicate to you that something has gone “hay-wire”? After reading my “reading” again this morning I find this paragraph which might indicate that you could foresee this condition when you gave me the reading:
- (Q) Is it necessary for me to take any more metabolisms? (A) Not after the second treatment period; for we will find these will be too severe, and the dread that has come from same has been a shock to the nervous system. But as we take the Atomidine in the manner indicated, we will find that all of these conditions will gradually be quieted and built up by the general system. Nothing is more sure, if this will be consistently and persistently done. After these treatments have been taken for the second period, we would give further instructions…should there be the necessity for other changes.
Inasmuch as I started to feel better almost instantly during the first and second period of treatments and during this time I haven’t had any of these “bad nights” and despondency which I had last night, I think perhaps a check reading would be very desirable. I have this week and next week for treatments and will keep them up until I have the check reading and am advised further. Anytime that you can give me this will be alright with me and I will manage to be home in my bedroom, in bed, at that time. I understand from Mrs. [811] that the check reading is $5.00, but you can let me know and I will send you the money the first of May, if that will be all right.
We were glad to see you when you were here and hope that you will be able to come back real soon. It is always a pleasure to have you near. Remember us to Mrs. Cayce, Hugh Lynn, and Miss Davis.
Sincerely, [808] Questions Enc.

- Will it be necessary to take any more treatments or should I change my treatments?
- Should I continue taking Atomidine?
- What causes the occasional pain in my intestines?
- Is my diet alright?
- Do I get enough exercise?

(Perhaps I should wait until my next check reading to ask this last question or wait until I am entirely well, but if you get down that far in my questions, I would be interested in hearing what it would say.)
R4. 4/24/35 (Wednesday) [808]‘s letter:
… St., N.W., Apt. 38 Washington, D.C.
Dear Mr. Cayce:
Another day and I find myself feeling much improved. I should have waited yesterday for a few days before writing you, but I did feel so miserable and inasmuch as it was on the same night that I had a diathermy I thought perhaps I had had enough diathermy and after getting along so well didn’t want to go back to my old condition. However, after feeling so much better today, I feel that it might have been due to the reoccurrence I had last Thursday. I am to take another diathermy tonight and will hold this letter until tomorrow to see how it affects me. If I feel as well tomorrow as I do today, you will receive the letter.
If it hasn’t inconvenienced you any and you haven’t made my appointment as yet, I think now that I would rather finish the treatments as outlined before and then have a check reading when you come to Washington next time. I only have the rest of this week and next week and according to my reading, by that time I should be rid of all those conditions that affect the nervous system. Don’t you think it would be better for me to wait? I would much prefer being present when I get my reading and I could use the same questions that I intended to use in my long-distance reading.
You let me know what you think about it and if you think I should have a reading before I finish the treatments. If not, and you think it desirable to wait until you come to Washington, I would appreciate it if you would make my appointment in advance so I will be among the first ones.
Hoping I haven’t inconvenienced you any and wishing you and your family the best of health, I am,
Sincerely, [808]
Thurs. 8 a.m.
I feel much better this morning. It evidently wasn’t the diathermy but just the climax of that spell that I had last week.
R5. 4/26/35 EC’s letter to [808]:
My dear Mrs. [808]:-
I have yours of the 23rd and 24th. I was more than happy to have yours of the 24th, to find out that you were better. I certainly am sorry that you had the little setback. But I guess you had to do that to make the readings come true, didn’t you? That’s the way my father speaks of it, and a few others who feel that if a reading says you’re going to have such and such reactions you might as well watch out for them! But I do hope that you will not have any recurrence. However, if you SHOULD, and you feel it is necessary to check up on it immediately, please don’t hesitate to wire us - and we have your questions on hand now so that we could go right ahead, if we just knew where you’d be at that time. But we won’t think about that. We’ll just be thinking that you won’t have any more, and can wait to hear your reading!
It was very fine to see you folks, and to find you looking much better.
After looking over your questions, there is one suggestion I would make. Try leaving off the health chocolates while the Atomidine is being taken. I don’t believe they work so well together. This is merely a suggestion; for I am awake now, not asleep! But I think it would be better.
Hoping you are now feeling fine and dandy, and asking to be remembered to Mr. [2784] - with regards from everyone here, I am
Sincerely, EC:GD
R6. 4/30/35 [808]‘s letter to EC:
Washington, D.C.
Dear Mr. Cayce:
Received your letter and surely was glad to hear from you. I think your suggestion about not eating health chocolates was a very good one. That might have been the cause for my relapse and probably made the “reoccurrence” more severe than if I hadn’t eaten them. I have also stopped drinking coffee hag for the present. I had to laugh at [2784] - when he read that part of your letter regarding not eating health chocolates, he said “You can’t fool Mr. Cayce - he knows awake or asleep!” I thought that was too good to keep.
I am much better than I was and have been resting nights. This is my last week of treatments and after that I should be feeling real good. Dr. Bolkhardt has been giving my treatments exactly as stated in my reading, but last Saturday I asked him to give me a little sun and he did. It made me feel so much better that he repeated it last night. He hesitated to do this before because my reading didn’t call for it, but it made me feel so much better it couldn’t possibly hurt me, do you think? Or, would that be going against my instructions? I wouldn’t want to do that for anything in the world!
I do hope it won’t be long before you come to Washington again. First of all, we are anxious to see you, Mrs. Cayce, and Miss Davis, and secondly I will be anxious to get my check-reading. I feel quite sure that I am going to be all right, but if I have to do anything else I would rather know so that I could start without wasting any time. Nevertheless, if you aren’t planning a trip soon, we will either arrange to come to Virginia Beach or have my reading by long-distance. [2784] isn’t over-enthusiastic about the latter - he said he likes to be right there and hear it!
We do enjoy seeing you folks and do hope your next trip to Washington will be for a longer period so that we will have the opportunity of taking you around Washington and showing you some of the sights.
Remember us to Mrs. Cayce, Hugh Lynn, and Miss Davis, and hoping you are all enjoying the best of health.
Sincerely, [808]
P.S. I am enclosing $1.00 for my April dues.

R9. 3/2/36 Letter-affidavit:
AFFIDAVIT
Before me, a duly commissioned Notary Public in and for the District of Columbia, personally appeared [808], who first being duly sworn, deposes on her oath says:
For a period of approximately two years prior to November, 1934, I suffered intermittently from serious physical ailments and declining health, was attended by several leading physicians and well-known specialists, and expended during that period substantial sums of money in paying doctor bills. My condition gradually grew worse instead of better, and in the month above named I sustained a physical collapse, and was taken to the Washington Sanitarium and Hospital for examination and advice. This Sanitarium is located outside but near the boundary line of the District of Columbia, in a suburb known as Tacoma Park, Maryland, and is provided with modern and up-to-date equipment and facilities. My arrival at the Sanitarium was followed by physical examinations, X-rays, laboratory analyses, metabolisms, and special studies, and when the Sanitarium physicians had completed their diagnosis they announced that my sufferings were caused primarily by an underactive thyroid gland. [GD’s note: In conversation Mrs. [808] explained that the original cause of her illness was the absorbing of lead poison from an underarm (?) depilatory which subsequently was taken off the market. See 808-9, Par. 11-A mentioning “mercury reaction”.]
[1/5/43 See 808-7 ltr.] They expressed confidence that a period of rest and treatment under their direction would aid in restoring me to health, and with this encouragement I remained at the Sanitarium and was treated for approximately five weeks. The treatment consisted of physical relaxation and rest, principally in bed, a special diet, frequent baths with alternate hot and cold water administered by a nurse, hot fomentations and cold packs applied externally to the spine and abdomen, baths in electric-light cabinets, and hand massages. In addition, non-habit-forming sedatives were prescribed and given to ease the terrific pains about the head and to produce sleep, while thyroid-gland emplets were taken to build up and increase the activity of the thyroid gland. At the end of the fifth week I was considerably improved, although far from well, and the constant use of sedatives was still necessary because of severe pains about the head. However, the expense involved in staying at the Sanitarium was heavy and burdensome, and I therefore returned home and gradually undertook to resume my daily duties. Within a few weeks thereafter, I felt that my strength was again diminishing, the headaches which had never ceased seemed unbearable, and I again visited the Sanitarium and sought further advice. One of the physicians informed me that definite relief could not be hoped for until such time as the thyroid gland was restored to a more nearly normal condition, and that a natural rebuilding process to bring this about would require treatment over a period of six months to one year. I returned home feeling very discouraged and despondent, and while pondering over the seemingly hopeless outlook I continued to take sedatives to afford relief from the splitting headaches, and took tonic medicines calculated to aid me in recovering from a general run-down condition.
It was at this time, in January, 1935, when I chanced to hear that a Mr. Cayce, renowned as a diagnostician, was expected to visit Washington in February, the following month. I had little hope that he could add anything of value to the advice received from the able and thorough physicians connected with the Sanitarium. While wondering what to do, a friend said to me: “After all, his diagnosis and advice will cost only $10.00, a very small fraction of the many hundreds of dollars spent in the past two years for doctor bills and for treatment at the Sanitarium; no risk is involved because he will merely diagnose the case and outline the character of treatment which should be followed; so why not make an appointment to see what happens.” I felt so despondent that I was persuaded to give him a trial, an appointment was made, and on February 2, 1935, I went to Mr. Cayce’s office, and he diagnosed my case and suggested a course of specific treatment.
I had never seen Mr. Cayce before, and he asked me NO questions before the diagnosis was made, nor while it was being made. Hence, I was greatly surprised to hear him announce in medical terms the nature of my physical ailments, the causes of my sufferings, and the character of treatment which should be pursued to restore normal health. Briefly, he declared that the blood circulation and the pulsations had been adversely affected by a nervous condition; that at times the heart pounded too fast and other periods it was too slow, but that the real seat of the trouble was in the glands of the body and their secretions; and that it was these glands and their activities which affected adversely the nervous system and the circulation, and brought about various reactions and disturbances in the body.
After describing the nature and causes of the difficulties experienced, Mr. Cayce suggested a course of treatment to be followed, for a period of nine weeks, in the manner which he outlined in detail. Specifically, Mr. Cayce suggested the following course of treatment:
Begin with the application of the diathermy in a very light form, alternating from period to period the plates or centers from the secondary cardiac plexus, or the 3rd and 4th dorsal center, and the 9th and 10th dorsal center, and in the lumbar plexus, or to those areas from which the torso portion is affected - or through which the motor axis of the nervous system as related to the glands’ activity upon the body affects the system. So, the first would be in the upper dorsal with the lumbar plexus; the next application would be from the solar plexus center or 9th dorsal and the motor axis
- or in the 3rd cervical center. These treatments we would take about three times each week.
Be mindful that what is assimilated or taken for assimilation in the body is nerve and blood building, in a well-balanced way and manner. Not an excess of any one element, yet it will be found that when the starches and the proteins are combined these will be better than the sugars or carbohydrates with either of these. Hence, keeping these well-balanced will make for the better assimilations to be activative with those influences in the system as created by the activity of the electrical vibrations, that stimulate from the axis of the nervous forces and circulations of the body.
I took the typewritten transcript, containing the matter quoted above, to Dr. Bolkhardt, a Washington Physiotherapist. After reading it carefully, and himself making a physical examination as to my condition, he expressed the opinion that Mr. Cayce’s diagnosis was a most remarkably accurate one, and at my request he consented to apply the diathermy treatments in the manner and according to the directions detailed by Mr. Cayce. This physician, as well as another with whom I later talked, said to me that medical science is aware of the value of diathermy treatments for certain ailments involving the thyroid gland, but both physicians were unable to understand how Mr. Cayce could designate the particular nerve centers to which the appliances should be attached in order to give the maximum benefit. After the first three treatments my headaches disappeared, and I gradually regained my strength. By using the Radio-Active Appliance, designed to equalize the circulation of the blood, I was able to fall asleep within a few minutes after retiring, and the use of sedatives to produce sleep was no longer necessary. Under the treatments suggested by Mr. Cayce, I improved rapidly, and soon began to feel like my old self once again and that life is worth living. At the end of about three months after beginning the treatments, I felt that I was entirely well, and have since enjoyed normal health until January of this year, 1936.
In January, 1936, I contracted a severe cold, accompanied by fever, and I immediately called a physician. He diagnosed my ailment as intestinal influenza, gave directions as to treatment, and suggested that I remain in bed until the abnormal temperature disappeared. His instructions were followed carefully, but at the end of seven days my condition was worse, and he then prescribed a new and different medicine. At the expiration of ten days, the fever still remained, my strength was waning, and the doctor advised that I be removed to a hospital and that an X-Ray picture be taken of the chest. My husband agreed that an X-Ray was advisable, but said that it should be the “Human X-Ray”, and he communicated by long-distance telephone with Mr. Cayce, who very kindly consented to give me a reading the following morning. A transcript of the reading [808-4] was received a day later, and it described accurately the nature of my troubles, and contained specific and detailed directions as to treatment. The reading declared that there had arisen acute conditions which were manifested by inflammation of the mucous membranes through the head, by congestions in the eliminating canals, and by tendencies for the mucous membranes in the throat, the head, and the chest to given pain, and that these abnormalities tended to create a plethoric condition. It went on to say that this condition must be corrected before the temperature would become normal, and predicted that, if the prescribed treatment and medicine were taken as suggested, all of the disturbing conditions would disappear in two or three days. The instructions in respect of treatment were carefully followed and on the third day the fever disappeared and the temperature returned to normal. The physician who had visited and attended me at my home at the beginning of this illness, was much interested in my quick recovery, and asked that he be permitted to see the reading.
I am very grateful to Mr. Cayce for his helpful assistance, and the two experiences related herein have caused me to hope that I can again secure his aid should I become ill in the future. HENCEFORTH, HE IS OUR FAMILY DOCTOR.
