This psychic reading given by Edgar Cayce at his home on Arctic Crescent, Virginia Beach, Va., this 23rd day of February, 1934, in accordance with request made by self - Miss [349], Active Member of the Ass”n for Research & Enlightenment, Inc.
[Edgar Cayce; Gertrude Cayce, Conductor; Gladys Davis, Steno. Mildred Davis, L. B. and Hugh Lynn Cayce.]
Time of Reading 11:45 - 12:15 Noon Eastern Standard Time. …, N.Y. (Seeking information, advice and guidance as to her health, mental and material affairs. You will answer the questions which she has submitted, as I ask them.)
-
EC: Yes, we have the body, [349]; this we have had before.
-
In the physical forces of the body we find there are disturbances; the recurrent conditions that have been indicated through the physical disorders produced by superacidity in the system, making for toxic forces that cause the disturbances as indicated from gas, sour stomach at times, irritations to the exterior portions in a rash and unsightly spots that occur on the body.
-
As indicated, this comes from the tendency for the acidity, producing constipation and a thinning of the walls of the intestines to such an extent as to allow the fumes or the urea thrown off from fecal forces to become toxic in the system, as well as producing in the digestive system the taking up of vitality, causing irritation in the nervous system and making for general upsetting of the whole body.
-
We will find that if we would follow this rather closely as to the diet we would soon relieve these conditions from the system, and make for an improvement in the general welfare of the body; this as an outline:
-
Do not use cereals and citrus fruit juices at the same meal, particularly a hot cereal; though these may be altered from time to time, but PREFERABLY as this:
-
Mornings - citrus fruit juices, and this means a combination or the change from time to time from oranges to the grapefruit and lemon and pineapple. All of these may be taken in sufficient quantity to satisfy the appetite, or with same may be had browned toast; not white bread, but whole wheat or rye bread, or occasionally this may be changed to stewed fruits or fresh fruits, but not apples. Baked apples may be included with a little cream. Not too much butter at any time, though a little may be used on the toast or with the meals. A little coffee may be taken with this meal, but not with the other meals.
-
Noons - perferably a whole green vegetable salad of fresh vegetables; as lettuce, tomatoes, celery, carrots, spinach and the like. With this at times there may be included, if so desired, the fresh sliced onion or leeks and radishes; and use on the salad the oil or mayonnaise dressings.
-
Evenings - not meats of a heavy variety, though at times there may be taken fish or fowl or lamb, but none that are fried, ever. Rather those that are baked or roasted, with a well-balanced vegetable diet; using at least two or three vegetables above the ground to one below the ground.
-
Be well, too, that there be some high enemas taken to eliminate those toxic forces that exist in the colon area, and with this character of diet we will find we will overcome these toxic conditions.
-
Be well that there be taken about two doses of Milk of Magnesia, or for two days, with large quantities of water, and the third day one teaspoonful Milk of Bismuth with a full glass of water. After the Bismuth is taken should be those periods when the enemas would be taken for the eliminating of the fecal forces that are gathered through the activity of these properties in the system.
-
These, as we find, will bring for the body the much nearer normal physical forces, eliminating these conditions in the digestive system, aiding in gaining an equilibrium and some weight; not too great for the body, but sufficient that it will keep the body in a more normal state.
-
Be mindful that too much sweets are not taken in the form of candies or pastries. Sweets may be taken SOMETIMES in moderation, but SPECIFICALLY none of hard candies. Chocolate creams may be taken in moderation, or chocolate and nuts, but not too great a quantity of potatoes nor of white bread at ANY time.
-
These will bring, for the physical forces of this body, a reaction that will be most satisfactory.
-
As to the mental attitudes of the body, and those conditions that have come into the experience, as we find, for the present, we would not WORRY about the appointments in the activity as related to either the stage or the cinema, but rather confine the activities to the work [with Mr. [257]] wherein the body has gained much of its equilibrium in a business and a social world. And RATHER wait for the summer vacations, either for the considering of a permanent activity with the theatre or - MORE preferably - prepare for making the home.
-
Do not attempt for a career outside of the home, for the home is the greater career for ANY individual that is minded even as this body, mentally and physically.
-
Those associations that have been made with dentist [4948] would be well, and by the latter portion of or middle summer or early fall, those activities and associations of the mind mentally are such as to make for the agreeable arrangements between these two, THIS we would consummate - rather than considering other activities. Not that they are not a portion of the body’s whole being, yet these may be used - by the efforts of the body - in the association in the home, and in the contacts that may be made through the home activities and the social activities of the body, to be much more helpful in the activities of others.
-
And why not raise for self one that might fulfil ALL those things that have been dreamed of by self in these associations. [See 349-16, Par. R2.]
-
We are through for the present.

Reports & Follow-up
R1. 2/26/34 EC’s letter:
The information as was gotten in your Reading the other day was as surprising to us as it possibly will be to you; that it should at this time almost reverse itself in many of the things that it has told you in the last year or so, is quite surprising and quite unusual, as I am sure you recognize.
I am in hopes, however, that it will not only meet with your approval just at this time, but will prove to be the most valuable suggestion that you have ever had in your experience. You know that we are only too glad to try and be of help.
R2. GD’s note: See subsequent rdgs. in which she asked about marrying Mr. [2573] instead of Dr. [4948]. She finally did marry Mr. [2573] although the rdgs. indicated that it would be better to marry Dr. [4948].
R3. 3/2/34 “Your letter came this a.m. and I appreciate it. I’m ever so grateful for the rdg. and especially for the information on my health. I can’t say more, but you know how I feel.
“I was very much surprised, as you were, at the rest of the information and do not understand why the radical change.
“At the present moment I do not feel that what the rdg. said about the dentist [Dr. 4948] can ever materialize. I don’t feel that he is the man for me. However, I don’t question the information in the rdg. as these things have to work themselves out.
“I have always felt, as the rdgs. have always told me, that I would be happiest in my own home, happily married, etc., but time flies - I had a birthday Wed. - and things don’t look as though anything like that will materialize, regardless of how I have always felt about it. It therefore behooves me to get a job and set to work again. I have never wanted to have a career exclusively to the exclusion of anything else. My desire to get into the theatre is merely a desire to work in a field in which I would find the necessary need and stimulation for self-expression, and work for myself. I would naturally make new contacts and in that way, no doubt find a congenial companion for marriage. I don’t seem to find it working in an office - and I’ve had all of nine yrs. of it! I feel the need of a new life - new work - new companionship - and the stimulation of being in a field that will bring out my real personality and the best in me.
“The rdgs. have always said I could - and should - do it; that I would never be happy married until I had tried the theatre. I feel that is true. I also feel that I could have that, and afterwards give up all thought of working at it, and THEN devote my life to my home, as I would no doubt be married in a few years and could carry out my plans in accordance with the advice in the rdg.
“They [the rdgs.] also told me not to consider a future with Mr. [257], but to use this and all my contacts as a stepping stone to a greater career for myself. Why the change? I know that conditions have been so bad that a step toward a new departure - a new field - cannot materialize because of existent conditions, and so I am content for the time being to go back to my office work, and wait until the propitious time for me to get into this new thing. The rdg. said to do that and not consider anything new, until the summer.
“After all, as old as I am, I am still young and have a lifetime before me. I only have this one life to live consciously and I want to feel, when my time comes to go on to a new life in another world, that at least I attempted to do what my soul recognized it always wanted to do, even when I was a child - inarticulate, shy, and a small town ‘hick’.
“Warner Bros. and Radio Pictures will both give me a test when I get on the stage and they see me. I am to meet someone from Paramount next Tues. Naturally, I can’t force things but I am trying to do all I can to get started.
“[437] could help - so could [434] but I don’t know the latter and I don’t want to use ‘pull’. All I ask is a chance like a million other girls seem to get.
“However, all I can hope for is that I will get a ‘break’, and possibly by the summer, conditions will be such that the time will be favorable for me to get a start somehow. All I can do is hope.”
R4. 4/6/34 [EC’s letter]:
Dear [349]:
Well, I finally came home again [from Arizona trip with T. Michell Hastings, Jr.]. We had a very nice little visit and, as usual, I expected to be gone two weeks and made it five! But it wasn’t very hard for me to persuade myself that I needed it, after someone offered to take me. I enjoyed it, and I hope that the rest and the experience I have had on the trip will better fit me to be of a greater service to my fellow man. Also I had the opportunity on my return trip to renew some of my old friendships and to meet many of those for whom I had tried to use myself as a channel for service, and with whom I had corresponded but never met. So, I had some quite interesting experiences.
[349], I suspect you were rather nonplused at some of the things given in your last reading. I don’t think, though, that you were any more so than I was myself. I don’t know whether this is news to you or not, but three other individuals had asked that same question concerning that same person you did. [[4948]. Misses [778] and [460]?] In each case they were told no. And then to have it said that it would be the proper thing for one that we think so much of as we do you, well, I just wonder if the Forces have been saving him for you all the while! For, he is a wonderful individual - and I was surprised when the reading said no to the others in the days gone by. But, to be sure, it brings up many other questions, as you suggest in your letter; your ideals and purposes, and the things that have been suggested for you. I do not know how to answer them, of course. Maybe I could if I was asleep. It’s a pity, isn’t it, that I can’t sleep most of the time - when people want to ask me questions? When I analyze it all, though, in my own mind, it seems to me you have been helping and aiding others for such a period of time that it may be all of these things have been necessary in your experience, either as desires or visions, and yet it is most time for you to make a decision wherein you may - through a BEAUTIFUL association
- make for many another individual many of the things you have builded as experiences in your own consciousness here at this time.
I wish I could talk all this over with you. It’s so hard to write it, of course. It may be sometime in the near future we will have the chance to do this. Anyway, you both come down to the Beach this summer. Be down at the Congress, and see if we are not able to get something together for you both that might be very much worth while.
Of course, we have quite an accumulation of correspondence, and also appointments, and we will quite busy for some time. And yet another thing, we find Gertrude’s mother is very, very low; we almost expect in every hour to receive word that she has passed on. Our last reading was not as encouraging as it had been heretofore. We can only hope and pray for the very best. This, of course, puts sort of a damper on everything; for, while we know that such things must come, we are not able some way or another to prepare ourselves for it all.
I hope this finds you and yours all well and on the improve. And many of those things developing for you that are most satisfactory and in keeping with all the good things that I’m sure you are deserving of.
Let us hear from you. With love and regards from each and every one, I am Sincerely, EC:GD
R5. 4/18/34 “I can’t seem to see that, at all, as I have known [4948] for a long time and never felt that I liked him particularly, and I still feel the same way. He’s a peculiar individual, and I am amazed at the information as I can’t possibly see how any such alliance can come about.”
R6. 5/26/34 See 349-17 questioning advice to marry Dr. [4948].
R7. 11/29/35 [Following EC’s arrest in Detroit]
I want to take this occasion now to tell you how very much I appreciate all that you have done for me.
I really have not been able to write you a personal letter until now to let you know just what the readings have done for me. I have always been able to keep my physical condition up to par by getting the reading whenever my health wasn’t what it should be, but after I had that unfortunate accident and the illness that followed it, keeping me in bed and in the house for a year, and out of work much longer than that, it was really by getting the help for your readings, that have now made me feel 100% OK.
Naturally, after the accident, which developed into pneumonia and pleurisy, after having a doctor diagnosis my illness as “sinus trouble”, and finally getting another doctor who started to treat me, it was your readings that put us on the right track and as I said, made my health at the present time, all that it should be.
I suppose you can realize how fortunate it is for me, and my family and any of my friends who happen to know of you, to be able to get the benefit of your wonderful gift. I can’t say too much about it to anyone, and when any of my friends ask me how I am feeling after that terrible illness I had, I tell them to thank Mr. Cayce for it.
R8. See subsequent readings
R9. On 5/13/41 She obtained Life Rdg. 2498-1 for their one month old son; he was given an incarnation as a Grecian who instructed the Romans “in the early activities towards stage” (acting, interpreting poems, legends, Grecian lore, etc.), and was told the outlets for him would be as a salesman, musician, actor, or in the radio, etc., depending on his choice. [See subsequent Life Rdgs.] [Or Mental-Spiritual Rdgs.]
R10. 3/18/44 She wrote of expecting another child late in May: “It’s wonderful to watch a family grow, isn’t it? It’s one of the main reasons for living and growing older, and I am always reminded of a rdg. you once gave me, years ago - it stressed that point - happiness and development in a home and family.”
R11. 3/21/45 “I am so anxious to prepare for my boys’ future and our financial situation has been appalling - so much so that I can’t talk about it. With time, I shall have to go back to work. I don’t like to keep injecting myself into the situation constantly, but that is the reason I have kept to myself. You all have your troubles with Judge gone.”
R12. See subsequent correspondence under 349-19 Reports.
R13. 8/2/67 Mrs. [349] wrote: “[2498] is now 26 and son […] is 23. [2498] is in the theatrical agency business and…is at the Univ. of Chicago working towards a master’s degree in International Relations and Economics.”

B2. 2/17/34 “Apparently my recent loss of weight has taken away my resistance to ward off these colds, which are the result of not being accustomed to this most unusual weather… As a result of existent conditions [financial, not working, etc.], my nervous system is again below par, and I seem to be troubled with the breaking out of my face again. It just seems I can’t get myself feeling all right, because I worry, and am nervous about myself not getting anywhere, not making any money and more or less living from hand to mouth… That is why your presence, and a personal talk with you, helps me so much, spiritually and mentally.”
B3. 2/21/34 She submitted questions, verifying her appointment. [EC did not read her questions before giving 349-16. See the questions recorded under her Mental-Spiritual Rdg. 349-15, Par. R3, including:
“Shall I give up all thought of the theatre for the present and go back to work for [257]? Perhaps it would be best for me to consider marrying Dr. [4948], dentist, at … St. Would we be happy, married?”
