GC: You will give the physical condition of this body at the present time, with suggestions for corrective measures; answering the questions she has submitted, as I ask them:
-
EC: Yes - that’s a big building!
-
Yes, we have the body here.
-
As we find, conditions have changed a great deal since we had same here.
-
There has gradually grown to be something of a chronic condition in the caecum area, and is somewhat of a complication of disturbance. For, while it has not reached the condition where a great deal of inflammation arises, we find that it causes irritability, tiredness, and at times a great deal of pain through the right groin, and especially at periods some distress in the lower portion of the abdomen. This also extends at times through the nerve pressure of same to the lower portion of the ribs on the right side, causing somewhat of a burning sensation.
-
This is a combination of the appendiciel area and the right ovary giving the disturbance; and these will necessitate - as a general precaution for the body - as much rest as practical, and not too much of great exercise on the feet.
-
As we find:
-
We would apply at least twice each week the hot and cold packs, about two or three times each, first hot and then cold, for about twenty minutes each, over this area; but not at or close to the menstrual period, see? Two or three applications of the hot, two or three of the cold, you see; one right after the other. Then afterwards the body should rest well, after such have been used.
-
Then the next day (after the Packs have been applied the night before, you see) we would have a GENTLE massage, especially through the area from the 9th dorsal downward.
-
Then we would take, over a weekend following this, you see, small doses of Simmons Liver Regulator - in the liquid preferably, for this body.
-
These conditions as we find cause not only the discolorations over portions of the skin of the body, but combined with the irritations and the positions of the womb itself they prevent conception for the body.
-
With these corrections, we will find there will be made a much better condition.
-
These we would do consistently for at least two or three rounds of the the applications, you see, - the hot and cold applications and massage twice a week, then the Liver Regulator over the week-end to stimulate the gastric flow not only through the liver and gall duct but to cleanse those areas about the caecum and appendix.
-
Do these, and we will find we will bring the better forces for this body.
-
After these have been done for at least three treatments, or three rounds of the applications - resting a week or two weeks in between, you see, - then we would give further instructions. Three rounds, with the rest periods between the rounds.
-
Ready for questions.
-
(Q) Is there a cyst in the right ovary? (A) Not a cyst as yet; an inflammation or tendency of same; sympathetic from conditions in the appendix area, as well as the lack of flow of impulses from the vagina through the tubes to the ovary.
Hence this stimulation as indicated that will be of a refractory nature, with the massage and stimulation internally, should aid in correcting the disturbance.
-
(Q) What should be done for almost constant pain in right shoulder and upper right arm? (A) Do the things as we have indicated. All of these effects are taken into consideration in the things suggested. This is the effect of pressure upon nerve forces from those areas indicated.
-
(Q) Is the present position [office job] having an effect on my nervous system? (A) Rather the conditions in the physical body have an effect upon the position the body occupies! It would be very well for the body, as soon as practical, to rest for a period of three or four months. And the sooner the better.
-
(Q) What shall I do to overcome my morbidity and general nervousness? (A) As indicated.
Do that as we have outlined, if we would bring the better forces for this body.
After this has been done, then we would give further instructions.
- We are through for the present.

Reports
Reports & Follow-up
R1. 7/14/39 “The rdg. gives me something to work on and beginning with Mon. I shall start the treatments. Don’t you think that I can give myself the hot and cold treatments and possibly [2573] could give me the massage?”
R2. 7/17/39 EC referred her to Dr. Louis H. Backman, Ph.T., saying he would be inexpensive and he felt sure she would be able to conceive, after following the treatments. [He gave example of little [1958]‘s parents.]
R3. 7/27/39 “Went to see Dr. Backman last week and had a treatment on Tuesday. I left the reading with him and he is to return it tonight. He gave me quite a severe massage on Tuesday and it made me very conscious of my abdomen the rest of the day and I haven’t been feeling so well yesterday and especially today. Dr. Backman says your readings - diagnosis
- are infallible, but he says that he uses his methods of treatment. He doesn’t seem to to see why the hot and cold applications are necessary if my pains aren’t acute - as the reading says the condition is chronic. I feel that the treatment was a little too strong on Tuesday and I am going to speak to him tonight about giving me the hot and cold applications.
“I was finally able to get Dr. Simmons’ liver regulator although they pack it differently and call it ‘laxative’. I procured it through Eimer and Amend but when I called the Chamberlain Medicine Co. who bought out Dr. Simmons, they told me it is the same thing. I am going to take it over this week-end.
“Dr. Backman seemed to think I should take two treatments a week - I mean, three, not two, but I can’t afford more than two. I am going away for two weeks beginning Aug. 6th and he will be away for the two weeks after that so that a month will probably elapse before I can start in again regularly, with the treatments.
“How do you feel about him? Should I be guided by what he wants to do? He says a patient must put himself in his hands for treatment and be guided by what he wants to do. Naturally, I want to follow your diagnosis and treatment suggested, so if he persists in going ahead with his ideas - then I will write for a check-up to see if I have been helped. Will you let me know how you feel about the whole thing? He says he hasn’t had a failure in 25 years and feels confident he can cure me as he says my whole abdomen is sluggish and the most of the trouble lies in a sluggish liver.
“Please let me hear from you soon and I shall write for a check-up while on my vacation so that I will know further what to do when I get back. I am going to leave my job just after my vacation and I can’t wait. I don’t seem to have the strength to come down town everyday and work, especially in this heat.”
R4. 7/29/39 EC’s letter: “[349], I would tell Dr. Backman you want the treatments that the rdg. gave or not at all, and then if he doesn’t do them like that we will find someone who will give them as suggested.”
R5. 8/1/39 See 257-209, Par. 56-A saying not well for [349] to again work for him.
R6. 8/23/39 “Judge, I just got back from a vacation. I do feel a little better. I gained 8 lbs. which I am going to lose as I don’t like to feel too heavy. Dr. Backman is away until after Labor Day and I wonder if this isn’t a good time to get a check reading, while he is away, so that in the event I should make a change, I can do it while he is away and not get in touch with him again after he returns.
“Do you think you can work one in for me?
“His method of treatment was a little different from the one suggested in the reading, which he felt was too slow - but I explained to you his ideas of treatment. I’m primarily concerned with getting well and I would appreciate a check reading. Our vacation schedule at the office will return to normal next month at which time I will leave. I really can’t do so until then, as much as I would like to be home and not working, although it will be hard to manage but I shall have to do the best I can.”
R7. 9/8/39 “I didn’t write you sooner thinking I might be able to change the question somewhat. I don’t know just what to do about them so perhaps they had better stay as they are. Anyway, Mrs. Cayce or perhaps Gladys could re-word them if they don’t read just right. I’m terribly anxious to get better soon. I’m following Dr. Backman’s advice in regard to cigarettes, coffee, tea, bathing my eyes regularly and in regard to food and if it weren’t for the fact that I have a depressive attitude and am a hypochondriac, I know, I believe I would feel myself that I am getting better. At any rate, I shall “think health” as one’s mental attitude has always a great deal to do with one’s physical well-being.
“Thanks a lot for writing me and getting the check reading and I certainly hope it will be a favorable one.”

B1. See 349-19 on 3/27/35 and subsequent Reports, including news that she got married 5/10/36.
B2. 6/30/39 She submitted questions, including: “What caused the severe illness which started 2/22/37? What is the cause of the sticky pains in the region of the entire abdomen on the right side? particularly the pains under the right rib and the burning feeling in the region of the appendix? Check reproduction organs. Why am I unable to conceive? What can I do to have a child? Would it be well to leave my position around Sept. and stay home a few months for rest? How can I overcome being a hypochondriac? What causes discolorations and itching over entire body without apparent cause? Is my body over-acid? Give diet to ensure well being.”
