This psychic reading given by Edgar Cayce at Hotel Park Plaza, on West 77th St., New York City, this 27th day of March, 1935, in accordance with request made by the self - Miss [349], Active Member of the Ass”n for Research & Enlightenment, Inc.
[Edgar Cayce; Hugh Lynn Cayce, Conductor; Gladys Davis, Steno. Miss [349].]
Time of Reading … Bronx, 6:30 to 6:45 P. M. Eastern Standard Time. New York City.
-
HLC: You will have before you the body and soul mind of [349], present in this room, who submits herself for mental and spiritual guidance as to the purpose for her future existence in the earth plane at this time and how she may best fulfil it.
-
EC: Yes, we have the body, the enquiring mind, the soul mind, [349], present in this room; this in part we have had before.
-
In seeking for advice and counsel for the application of self in the present experience for the greater material-mental satisfaction and the greater soul development, it is well for the body, as has been indicated, to not only in the material manner choose an ideal but most of all through the spiritual import. For the entity, the soul, must know that what is conceived in the spirit of truth with the ideal that is of the constructive nature will in its own due season bring the MATERIAL, the mental developments and make for that satisfaction, that understanding, that will make the experience in the earth the more and more worthwhile. Ideals of a material nature, as have been set at times by the body, break and fade and fall away. Only those that are conceived in the spirit of truth are lasting. For the soul is all that is eternal, and of which one may see the expressions in the material world. And this, then, must be the basis for the mental and material seeking also.
-
While the entity in the present is passing through those experiences that bring about doubts and fears, in the self has been builded much that in the material world - if it is held to - will find its own reward and will bring a contentment that may not be gainsaid in any way or manner.
-
As to the purposes for entering into the experience in the present, as has been indicated, there are many varied experiences, many associations wherein there were those ordinarily termed karmic conditions that are in the material-mental world opportunities for expression, as in training to or in relations with the spiritual imports or promptings of activity in the associations with same. As has been given, while a career may be sought in the material world, those periods for its expression have - in a manner - passed by on the other side; yet there are those fields of activity in the home, in the associations, in those relations in which the entity may bring into the material world that which will find in self and in the expressions of self in body, mind and soul, that which has been sought so much in the own experience.
-
Be patient, then. For in patience ye possess your soul; ye will become aware of thy soul and thy meeting with thy God in the temple of thy body. For thy body IS the temple of the living God. Hence it must be presented to Him in a holy and in an acceptable way and manner, as thine own conscience, as thine own ideal prompts thee from within. Meeting, then, those emergencies in thine daily experience ye will come to know more and more, to feel, to experience and to find activative in thine daily associations, that thy promptings are not for self expression but that the glory of thine ideal, thine God, may be manifested in thy dealings and thy associations with thy fellow man day by day. And these, founded in this, will bring material gain, moral and mental understanding, and soul and spiritual growth.
-
Ready for questions.
-
(Q) Advise me about marriage - with whom should it be, and will it be, and when should it be or when will it be? (A) As has been indicated, this is the greater channel for expression of this body and its ideals. As has been given, there is one with whom the body is acquainted or associated that will make for the proper union [4948]; but the response must be within the inner self and the answering of the individual associate as answering to the ideal within self. As to who, choose thou.
-
(Q) When should it be? (A) When the promptings of thine own conscience and of thine own experience bring it to pass.
-
(Q) What about my present job? (A) Hold to it!
-
(Q) How long will I stay there? (A) As long as the associations and the conditions are such as they exist in the present.
-
(Q) What about [2573] or [4948]? (A) As given, this is an ideal association from these angles, but it must be answered within self.
-
(Q) Why do I feel as I do about [2573]? (A) There has been an association and an attraction one for another, as in the Grecian experience. On the other hand, there have been the obligations that [4948] owes to the body; these make the variations.
-
(Q) What were the obligations, and when were they made? (A) In the former appearance or the associations of each in the Persian experience, when [4948] was dependent upon not only the material activities but the associations for the very life itself in the expression or experience at the time. So it makes for those associations that might be in the present wherein it would not only make for merely convenience, but for that which would be builded into the union of body and mind for a strength of purpose.
-
(Q) Why do I feel as I do about [4948]? (A) As the sex of any where they have depended upon or been the source of supply for those of the opposite, there is an aversion; yet in unison there would come a variation in such.
-
(Q) What about a theatrical career, and movies? (A) As just given, this would best be passed in the present; and BUILD same in the seed of thine own body.
-
(Q) Even though, and if, married, won’t I have to work? (A) Not necessarily.
-
(Q) What would the prospects be if I were to marry [2573]? (A) This depends upon what the body would make of same; for it would be building a different association and relation.
-
(Q) Would that be as well as the association with [4948]? (A) This shall be judged by self and not from here, for we have given which is best.
-
(Q) Any other general advice or counsel for the body at this time? (A) Know what is thine ideal, not only material or mental but - most of all - from the promptings of the spirit within; studying to show thyself approved, not unto man, not unto that of man’s making, but unto thy Maker; keeping thyself in that way and manner which will make for the glorifying of thy activities in His sight.

Reports & Follow-up
R1. 5/10/35 “I hope your rest up at Reilly’s did you some good. [H.J. Reilly’s Sun Air Farm, Oak Ridge, N.J.] It was very nice that you could get there, at the end of your New York stay, and before going to Washington, as it came at the right time and should have given you the rest and peace you needed, for a while.
“I knew that when you came to New York, it would be the same old story, but at least this time I was lucky inasmuch as I saw you once, anyway, without a crowd being around.
“I appreciate the reading, you know how much. You have probably read it by this time; your reaction would be most welcome, and helpful. It still has me more or less in a daze, but I am not questioning it, because whatever must be, must; I might just as well be quiescent about it, although it is apt to be discouraging.”
R2. 3/10/36 “I think I’m getting married 2 months from today, May 10th. [2573] is an awfully nice boy and I’m really very fond of him. Given an even break, and a chance, I think we’ll be happy, if we make up our minds to it. Of course, [2573] has found it difficult to get started and I’m in a job I have always hated, but maybe some day things will be all right if we try hard enough to make them so.” [See 349-18 on 7/7/34 saying [2573] would be able to get married in 1938.]
“[2573] has a B.S. and an M.A. in chemistry and he did want to teach it, but that seems to be very difficult at present. He has been clerking in a shoe store and he starts working at a regular job about the 15th of this month, still in the shoe store. What else can he do?
“I hope Gladys will wish me luck, too. It just doesn’t seem to be a ‘go’ with Dr. [4948], as she thought it might be.”
R3. 5/10/36 She and [2573] did get married.
R4. 5/23/36 She wrote thanking EC for wedding gift of candelabra, saying, “Jewish people value that above all things in a home.”
R5. 12/16/36 “[2573] and I are in routine jobs. We’re trying to furnish an apartment and we haven’t any money but our salaries, but thank God for that, eh?”
R6. 12/19/36 EC’s letter: “It is what many would call the humdrum life that makes for the development of every one, if the time is used in improvement and not allowed to become humdrum in itself.”
R7. 4/6/37 “I married one of the nicest boys I could ever hope to marry. He’s perfect, so far, in almost every respect, and has adjusted himself beautifully to marriage. At first, it was slightly difficult; he’s the apple of his mother’s eye and all she lives for. Naturally, that could tend to make one self-centered or selfish - but [2573] has turned out to be all that I could wish for. All he needs is a good ‘break’ and inasmuch as he is a good boy, patient, non-complaining, we can hope that he will soon get it…
So many times parts of the various readings come to my mind, as one did this morning, and then I realize what a wide scope the readings cover. So many things are beginning to affect me now as were given in the readings years ago. When I move this summer and have more room, I am going to collect all my readings together from my mother’s where they are now and give them a place of honor in my own apartment where I can get to them easily. As they are now, they are put away with other things and can’t be reached very easily.
On the whole, I feel so much better about things. I think I’m a much easier person to get along with and have developed a much more philosophical attitude toward things as they happen. I don’t become as morbid about them, but am hoping that things will work themselves out in the best way for all concerned. After all as things happen, they are for our development, character building and for the best, - we hope!”
R8. 6/22/39 “Judge, do you think you could fit me in for a rdg. sometime soon? I’m not satisfied with the way I feel. Perhaps I am just bored, as [2573] works every evening but one and I have a great deal of time on my hands, but no incentive to do anything but just develop into a hypochondriac. I don’t feel just the way I should and I believe that a thorough physical check-up, as only a rdg. can do it, would help me tremendously.
“Perhaps right after that we could get a Life Rdg. for [2573]. I know that it would be very interesting.”
R9. 7/6/39 See 349-20, a Ck. Physical Rdg., 9/12/39 see 349-21.
R10. 2/5/40 “I was very busy at the office getting ready to leave, and finally I managed to get away. They’re still after me at the office to come back, but they mention no raise - the work is piling up, and they’ve two girls to take my place… I’m not working now and the sense of freedom is wonderful…this is the first real rest I’ve had in years and I surely needed it after working in that ‘prison’. It was exactly like a jail sentence to me, although, truthfully, I really miss not doing something. When one has been in harness for so long, it is hard to stop. I don’t want ever, if I can help it, to go back to office work, or a job where I must sit - I don’t think it is good for me, and I am most anxious to keep well.
“I’m hoping I can make use of the time, money and effort I spent in taking up dramatic work, and hope I could realize something out of it by doing something on the radio. Wouldn’t that be a good idea? I’d like to start in, in a small way, and do small parts in plays over the air, or be the female voice in ‘advertising blurbs.’ Also, I want to get all my notes together, practise again and teach diction. I believe I can do it.
“I also want a Life Rdg. for [2573], to see whether he should continue in the shoe store or get a P.O. job… I hope that some day he can do something with his chemistry… He works so hard and is so patient that I would love to see him get into something where he could have some encouragement and hope for the future. Whoever my guiding star is, certainly did the right thing for me in leading me to [2573]. I always say we have everything but money. I wish, Judge, some day you would get a chance to know him well, as he is so real, so understanding, broad-minded, intelligent, tolerant - and with all the virtues! I could keep on about [2573] for a long time, but maybe some day you can see for yourself - I hope so.”
R11. 3/12/40 “[2573] is now working in the P.O. and his hours are most unsteady.”
R12. 3/21/40 She obtained Ck. Physical 349-22 asking how to become physically able to bear a child.
R13. 4/4/40 “Haven’t seen Mr. [257] in ages but Mrs. [189] always knows where to reach me. Don’t forget to call on me when you come to N.Y.”
R14. 9/14/40 She wrote that the doctor had definitely confirmed her pregnancy. [See under 349-22 Reports.] “I’m at Mr. [257]‘s office - I had to be downtown and as I hadn’t seen him for some time, I stopped in at the office. He’s in, but busy as usual. I understand he was at Va. Beach for a few days but he hasn’t told me about his trip as yet.”
R15. 11/16/40 “I’ve told a few people you’re expected to be in town, and I want to advise them of the meeting. Dr. [4948], … Mr. [2709], etc.”
R16. 1/21/41 She thanked EC for his offer to give a Life Rdg. for “the little stranger” when it arrives, saying: “I’ve always liked the idea of having a little girl - never thought much of having a boy, although I am beginning to feel that if it were a boy, it would be grand. A son is nice to have, but so is a daughter. I don’t really care which, as long as it is a healthy, happy, normal little baby.”
R17. 4/9/41 Her baby son was born. See his Life Rdg., 2498-1, on 5/13/41.
R18. 8/12/41 She obtained Life Rdg. 2573-1 for her husband.
R19. 10/31/41 She requested Ck. Physical 349-24, saying: “I need concrete and definite information on just how to keep well. I haven’t any money but I have other things, thank God, and I am more anxious than anything to be a good wife and mother to a good husband and a gorgeous baby.”
R20. 12/13/41 “[2573]‘s hours are most erratic [at the P.O.]… Sometimes I’m frightened because I’ve never been in this [financial] predicament. When I think of how I used to spend my money when I should have saved it against a time like this, when I really need it! It seems so terrible to have to watch each cent so carefully.”
R21. 2/12/42 “I wish I could do something for you, but here I must ask you for a ck. physical [349-25] rdg. and I don’t even have anything to send you for the last one. It’s humiliating to me to be in the position where I must impose upon some- one’s friendship, and a double sense of humiliation when you realize your husband’s position doesn’t pay enough to even buy one Defense Bond for $25. It makes me feel deep within that it is unpatriotic not to buy at least one, and I could just curl up and die with the humiliation of it. I suppose ultimately the P.O. will pay better salaries but the 2 yrs. he has been there have been hellish. I’m not complaining - it’s gone beyond that - but it is so hard not to be able to do the decent things, such as, for instance, buy Defense Bonds, pay you for a rdg., etc. It kills one’s self-respect, and makes me feel so small and mean within. It isn’t a pleasant feeling.”
R22. 5/25/44 She gave birth to another baby son. See correspondence under 349-16 Reports.
R23. 1/12/45 Letter to GD after EC’s passing: “As I wrote Mrs. Cayce, I can’t find the words to express my sorrow to you over Judge’s passing. I, for one, shall miss his advice and friendliness, but his presence will live with me always. I can imagine how you all must feel, when I feel as I do. Your feelings over his passing must be intensified at least a thousand times. I wish I could have talked with him once more. The next best thing will be to talk with you. So much of his goodness, you have.
Gladys, at some time if you ever come to N.Y., please let me know. I want you to know my boys, and I should like to talk with you. What are your plans? I hope I can hear from you at some time. Please don’t lose touch.” Love, [349]
R24. 1/28/46 “[2573] works evenings until after midnight and I am in every evening alone. My social life is nil. Unfortunately, our money problem is in fact a problem. I can’t afford anything very much, and the past six yrs. have been a constant struggle. We thought things would get easier, but now with a 40 hr. wk., things are bad again.”
R25. 9/30/47 We learned that she had gone back to work for Mr. [257] as his sec’ty, getting someone to look after her little boys.
R26. 11/22/47 “I hope I can get to the Beach sometime with the boys, and [2573] too, if he can get a summer vacation. I went through so much in 7 yrs. that I hope the tide has now turned.”
R27. 10/64 Mr. [257]‘s ltr.: “Mrs. [349] attained a broad business experience through my social, religious and business interests, of which she was a valuable part and assistant. I saw her two fine 6 footers grow up, be educated at Brandeis Univ., and make good business connections for their future. Her husband [2573], a graduate chemical engineer, worked consistently with [349] and they accomplished a successful married life.”
R28. 8/2/67 Mrs. [349] wrote GD for help from the rdgs. for her sister, [5450], saying: “Son [2498] is now 26 and […] is 23. [2498] is in the theatrical agency business and […] is at Univ. of Chicago working towards a Master’s degree in International Relations and Economics. [2573] and I are going along, trying to keep on an even keel and keep things going, financially and otherwise, but if we keep our health, that is the most important.”
R29. 12/23/68 “I couldn’t bring myself to tell you my sister [352] died suddenly last Jan. 29th and I am completely heartbroken. I had the flu and couldn’t attend [257]‘s memorial service at Temple… It has been a rough year.”
