This psychic reading given by Edgar Cayce at the office of the Association, Arctic Crescent, Virginia Beach, Va., this 15th day of April, 1944, in accordance with request made by the mother - Mrs. […], new Associate Member of the Ass”n for Research and Enlightenment, Inc., recommended by the book, THERE IS A RIVER, via Mrs. A. 1. GC: You will go over this body carefully, examine it thoroughly, and tell me the conditions you find at the present time; giving the cause of the existing conditions, also suggestions for help and relief of this body; answering the questions, as I ask them:

2. EC: Yes, we have the body here, [4061].

3. There are disturbances preventing the normal development of this body but we find that there may be brought better conditions, if there will be taken the proper precautions, though it will require persistency and consistency.

4. These, then, are the conditions existent and that are to be met:

From temperature, congestion and those activities in the throat, bronchi and lungs, there was caused a suppression in the coordination of the circulation between cerebrospinal and sympathetic nervous systems. This especially in the areas of the brachial center has caused a deflection that prevents the normal flow of circulation between impulses and the deeper circulation to the optic forces. Also in the lumbar axis the suppressions have caused the inability as yet for controlling the locomotory centers. As we find, both of the locomotory centers are affected, though the brachial center shows the effect more to the sensory organism or especially to that portion controlling the optics and the nerves of the optics. While there is not the taking away entirely of the vision, there are those incoordinations preventing the proper activity in these directions.

6. For the swelling produced along the optic center, do not operate - else there will be formed across the area, scars that may not be eliminated. While there might be some help, scars would be formed that would continue to hinder full development.

7. The general activities in other portions of the body are very good, or will be with the applications for strengthening nerve tissue and for supplying from that assimilated the necessary influences for the reproduction of activities through portions of the body.

8. For as indicated ever, there is gradually a replenishing of every portion of the body, if the proper balance is kept in the system so that the eliminations and assimilations are such that each portion of the system may reproduce itself.

9. These we would add for the body here:

10. We would begin with the use of the low electrical vibrations of the Wet Cell Appliance, though for this particular body we would use it a little stronger than the regular charge.

11. Use, then, two pounds of the Copper Sulphate and the other ingredients in proportion. This is static electricity, the lowest form. Through this we would carry into the system vibratorially those properties that will supply through the glandular system and through the eliminations the activities to rebuild nerve energies.

12. The Appliance would be used each day for thirty minutes, one day using Chloride of Gold Solution (in the proportions of one grain to each ounce of distilled water) the next day using Spirits of Camphor, commercial strength. These are to add to the purifying of the system and to replenish the energies in the nerve reflexes themselves.

13. Each day the large nickel plate, (through which the solution passes vibratorially) would be attached at the umbilical and lacteal duct plexus or two fingers (the width of the mother’s fingers) from the navel center to the right and three fingers up from that point.

14. When using the Gold Solution the small copper plate would be attached to the 9th dorsal center.

15. The next day when using the Camphor Solution, the small copper plate would be attached at the plexus between the shoulders - the 2nd, and 3rd dorsal center.

16. Continue alternating the attachments in this manner.

17. Be sure to keep the attachment plates clean. Polish them with the emery paper each time when removing from the body and each time before attaching. Do disconnect from the solutions when not in use. Do connect the Appliance twenty minutes before the attachments are to be made to the body for their activity in the system.

18. Each day when removing the Appliance give the body a massage with cocoa butter. This should be begun at the base of the brain and extend up over the mastoid areas to the temple and under the point of the chin, and the centers just between the eyes and over the eyes; so that the nerves to the brain forces in their reflex action will be carrying the energies that are created by the daily uses of the Appliance. Then begin at the 1st cervical, massaging gently, more on each side of the spine than on the spinal column itself, along the sympathetic nerve areas, and at the 3rd cervical, 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th dorsal, 9th dorsal and throughout the lumbar-sacral areas. These areas particularly should be stressed in giving the thorough massage with the cocoa butter. This should not be hurried through with but should be given gently and thoroughly. Give constructive suggestions to the body especially during the period when the Appliance is being used and when the massages are being given, for the body will tend to go to sleep during these periods.

19. Do these, keeping the normal diet, and in sixty to ninety days there should be found more quiet, a great deal of improvement; and then there may be given those changes for corrections that may bring the nearer to normal conditions of this body - if there are no operations. If the operation is necessary, from the growths this may be later performed, but as we find if these applications are kept in the manner indicated, it will not be necessary.

20. Ready for questions.

21. (Q) Is there anything else to be done for the locomotion or towards strengthening the legs? (A) Do give the massages in the lumbar-sacral area, and let it extend over the limbs. This, will, through these applications indicated, bring locomotion to the body. Use the cocoa butter in all of the massage, at least during the first ninety days.

R1. 4/20/44 [4061]‘s mother’s letter to EC: “I want you to know how happy I am with [4061]‘s reading and how grateful I am to you for referring me to Dr. Marion Dick. She is helping me with the massage and isn’t even charging me a penny. She is greatly interested in your work and my prayers will be with her husband’s reading, Dr. Smith [J. Francis Smith, D.O.] on August 12th. [EC was not able to get the reading.]

“I am anxiously waiting for the Wet Cell Appliance and I’m sure we will get results. It was a great pleasure to meet you and Mrs. Cayce, and your staff and I shall long remember a pleasant time with you all.”

R2. 4/24/44 EC’s letter to [4061]‘s mother: ”…I am glad to know that you are pleased with our efforts in [4061]‘s behalf, and that you found Dr. Dick sympathetic and helpful. While I have never met her, she must be a very wonderful person…”

R3. 5/12/44 [4061]‘s mother’s letter to EC: “I have loaned my booklet out and don’t know whether it is necessary to fill out an application for a Check Reading for [4061]. I thought I had better write now for an appointment because I realize how very busy you are and if possible would like it at the end of three months.

“I am getting along beautifully with my treatments and am sure at the end of ninety days we will see great improvement. Dr. Dick is still helping us and is greatly interested in [4061]‘s progress. She would like very much for me to have a life reading on [4061] when you have the time so I thought I would ask about that now.

“I am reading THERE IS A RIVER and I am so pleased that I was able to meet you and Mrs. Cayce before reading it. Now I feel that I know you both and a great many of my friends are reading it also, and are amazed at the great things you have done for people. It must be a great satisfaction to know that you have made so many people happy, in spite of all the obstacles. My baby is already showing improvement and I am most grateful to you.”

Dear Dr. Dick:

There seems to be a royal confusion down here over who is helping to accommodate you during the coming Congress! It looked like each person in the office was going to write you with a different suggestion - and then I found out that you were all settled at the Tourist Haven. Which is fine, because if you had waited for us to arrange things you might have ended up in any place from an Army Camp to a Rest Home. We have been swamped with letters about the Congress. It seems that people are determined to come down here and see for themselves, in spite of transportation difficulties.

Miss Davis, Mr. Cayce’s secretary, wrote to Dr. George about a room at the Essex House in which you might be able to stay with the two of them, beginning the 22nd. It sounded a bit inconvenient, and she was relieved to know that you had arranged to stay at Tourist Haven. Do let us know as soon as you arrive, for we are all anxious to meet you.

I am enclosing a copy of the May BULLETIN, although I think you already have one. Your speech is to be the Big Address of the Congress, coming as it does after the Annual Dinner. That doesn’t mean it must be longer than all the other speeches! Rather that we are proud to present you on our program.

The title suggested is vague enough to be roomy. We can well announce your own choice of a subject that evening when introducing you. Physicians who have spoken in the past on the physical readings have usually just discussed their own experiences with the readings and then suggested what should be done about both the technique of using readings and the need for using materials accumulated during forty years of such readings.

I cannot tell you in correspondence how much we appreciate your going to all the trouble of coming down here and sharing your thoughts with us. So I’ll wait until you arrive. Meantime, be sure to let me know if there is anything I can do to make things easier for your visit.

R7. 6/23/44 Extract from Dr. Marion Dick’s talk made at A.R.E. Thirteenth Annual Congress, June 21—25, 1944:

”…The mother brought me the case history of case [4061]. The diagnosis was infantile glaucoma. It is absolutely incurable. They are born blind and they die blind… I started to treat [4061]…during the treatments he fought and screamed…the mother told me that he spent all of his waking hours crying… This went on for two weeks…after he began the Wet Cell Appliance treatments he changed completely…he was quieter and stopped fighting…he has changed so that you wouldn’t recognize him as the same child…[4061] is seeing …the doctor at the Naval Hospital was amazed…his eyes were hard as rocks at first…now they are normally soft… he is improving by leaps and bounds…”

R8. 7/13/44 [4061]‘s mother’s letter to EC: “I’m sorry not to be able to come to Virginia Beach but with the baby’s appliance to carry, it would be quite difficult… I have sent too many questions but put down everything I could think of that possibly might help my baby:

1. Are the treatments being correctly given? (Attaching the plates in the right position and the massage given correctly?)
2. May anything be done to overcome difficulty in massaging around his eyes and head?
3. Will the bunches or growths on his eyes eventually disappear?
4. Were the operations that caused them necessary and if not have they done any harm or disfigured them permanently?
5. Why do doctors still insist the diagnosis ‘congenital glaucoma’? Do they really believe it or is it because of the staphylococcus infection that he admittedly contracted in the hospital where he was born before the eye condition was discovered?
6. What is the correct diagnosis and what actually caused his serious eye condition?
7. Is there hope that eventually his eyes will be normal in appearance as well as normal vision?
8. How much does he see at this time and which eye is more useful to him at present?
9. Why does he rock back and forth continually? What can be done to prevent this unpleasant mannerism?
10. Why does he hold his left hand over his left eye continually and what can be done to prevent it? Does he have pain in his eyes?
11. Why does he stand on his head with legs straight most of the time? Does it relieve the tension or does he see better that way, because that is the way he examines most objects?
12. Does he focus correctly or is it possible that he might see double?
13. How long will it be before he can walk unsupported? Is his speech retarded because of his original sickness and what can I do to encourage it?
14. What causes the tantrums that he has quite frequently when corrected and otherwise, and how can this be overcome?
15. Why does he put his fingers in his ears?
16. Have any of the bad falls he has had affected him in any way? (He seems to be able to stand a great deal of pain.)
17. Why does sunlight bother him so much while electric lights fascinate him and he is able to look directly into a flashlight?
18. Should he be forced to stay in the light or sun or is it bad for his eyes?
19. Why is it almost impossible to get near his face, even to wash it? (He always turns on his stomach, if he is forced to turn around, he always sneezes or gags.)
20. What caused the red marks on his nose when he was born? Were the proper drops used in his eyes as soon as he was born? What happened at that time, and was the physician present?
21. Is there anything more the mother can do or have done to help him?”

B1. 8/10/43 [4061]‘s mother’s letter to Mrs. A. F. MacArthur: “The diagnosis of [4061]‘s eye condition is ‘Buphthalmos’ or infantile ‘glaucoma.’ It is a distention and protrusion of the eyeball and the operations that he has had have been to relieve the tension. The right eye is larger than the left and to date he has had ten operations.

“The baby has no pupils and the color part is enlarged. There seems to be a film over the eyes. He tries to focus and has light perception. The sunlight bothers him greatly and he keeps his hand over his left eye continuously. He also has a habit of always keeping his head down and in his playpen, rests his head on the floor with his knees straight.

“[4061] was born on June 23, 1942 in the Richardson House, Boston and has quite a history. His birth was a very easy, normal birth but when he was three days old he picked up a germ in the hospital from someone that handled him and had a staphylococcus infection which finally turned to streptococcus and pneumonia. At six days old he was taken to the Children’s Hospital and was not expected to live. He was there until he was six weeks old and it was there, after pneumonia set in at three weeks that the eye condition was discovered. Dr. Clement Smith took care of him and called in Dr. Goodall from the Eye and Ear Infirmary, Boston. At ten weeks old he had his first eye operation at the Mass. General Eye and Ear Infirmary and has been in there several times since.

“On April 25, 1943 he was admitted to the Children’s Hospital for a complete neurology examination and upon completion found that his brain is perfect and the condition is wholly the eyes. He sleeps well and eats well and is in perfect health, and that is why I question the diagnosis.”

B2. 8/14/43 Mrs. A. F. MacArthur’s letter to EC: “After reading the book by Thomas Sugrue about the wonderful gift of which you are possessed and your having done so much good and helping so many people, I am taking the liberty of writing you and enclosing this letter of Mrs. […] [[4061]‘s mother] which speaks for itself. Mrs. […] works for her living and her husband is now in the Army. I have seen this little baby [4061], strong and well in every way except his eyes and I think Mrs. […] feels much of it was carelessness in the hospital and these operations on such a little baby were experimental. However, that cannot be proved, I suppose.

“Would it be possible for you to give a reading on this case? I will be glad to help Mrs. […] meet the expense of the reading. I expect to be here at Magnolia until about September 10th and I am sure she will deeply appreciate your help. I will be glad to do what I can to help. P.S. Will you kindly let me know how much a reading is? I will very gladly give $10.00.”

B3. 10/18/43 [4061]‘s mother’s letter to EC: “Enclosed you will find a money order for a reading for my son [4061]. I found your book most interesting and feel that God has shown me a way to help my son through you. In reading your booklet I find that your son also had no sight at one time and regained it, so I know you must know how very anxious I am for you to try to help [4061].

“I am moving to Philadelphia and will have to change doctors. My son was to undergo another operation the middle of November and I am hoping that you can advise me as to what to do. I know you are very busy and will appreciate anything that you will do to help me.”

B4. 10/21/43 EC’s letter to [4061]‘s mother: ”…Our appoint- ments are so far ahead, Mrs. […], I do not know whether we will be able to get this in time or not. For the first possible period we have is Saturday morning, April fifteenth, 10:30 - 11:30, Eastern War Time.

“I understand this is out of the question for an emergency reading, but there have been so many hundreds who have requested readings it is impossible to meet your request before this time.

“If this is not satisfactory, know that we will be happy to return the membership fee. If you accept this period, you will let us hear from you, giving us the exact address at which the young man will be during this time, and a list of questions you wish asked…”

B5. 3/10/44 [4061]‘s mother’s letter to EC: “I’m planning to bring my son [4061] to Virginia Beach for his reading and as the time is nearing I thought I would write and ask you if you could suggest a hotel or some place that we could stay that would be convenient to you. I am not familiar there and would appreciate any information that you might be able to give me.

“I can hardly believe the 15th of April is so near and have been anxiously waiting for it. I think the work that you and the Association have done is wonderful and I am most grateful for the appointment and your interest in my son, by trying to help him.

“I am happy to say that I think his vision is improving and I think he is seeing more each day. I know he has light perception and am almost positive he has object perception. He is being taken care of by the Naval Hospital here in Philadelphia and I finally persuaded Dr. Beam [?] to let me stop using eye drops as it was making my baby afraid of me and struggling against me. So far it hasn’t made any difference in the tension [distention?] and my prayers have been answered and so far I have kept him from being operated on until after I see you. When I first took him there Dr. Beam said that an operation was absolutely necessary so you see they can be wrong and I am so pleased that he seemed to have confidence in me by trying some of the things I suggested. I have always felt the diagnosis was wrong and that all the operations were not the way to restore his sight. He recovered from his original sickness, pneumonia, when all hope was given up, and I feel sure that he will soon be able to see.

“I plan to leave here on Friday, April 14th, so that I will be in Virginia Beach…I expect to have a friend to help me with [4061] as he is not walking as yet…”

B6. 3/13/44 GD wrote [4061]‘s mother suggesting a couple of hotels she might stay at while visiting Virginia Beach: ”…Mr. Cayce has been ill for the last three weeks and unable to give any readings. He is much better now and hopes soon to start working. If for any reason he apparently will not be able to keep your appointment, we will wire you on Thursday, April 13th. If you do not hear from us you will know it is alright to come ahead…”

B7. 4/15/44 EC gave the reading, 4061-1, for which the mother was present. Four different readings were given at the period (hour) when this information for case [4061] was secured.
