EC: Yes, we have the entity and those relations with the universe and universal forces, that are latent and manifested in the personality of the present entity, known as [438].
-
In entering this present experience, from the astrological aspects we find many conditions as personalities and as latent abilities in the entity that would be contrarywise to those from the purely astrological chart; yet many impulses at times are in accord with that which has been attributed to the astrological viewpoints.
-
Yet, as we find, the sojourns in the activities of environs through those periods of absence from the earth, and that the entity has accomplished in the earth’s experience, make for changes. Yet these as astrological aspects may be given in the present experience, and will show tendencies in the activities at times in the present entity; these influences being active from astrological sojourn:
-
From Jupiter there are those things that gather about the body; and individuals of affluence, position, power, place, in the affairs of all walks of life. Yet making, within the entity’s own mental associations with such, that which might be accomplished in the lives of such associations if the ideals of such individuals were varied from that manifested in their activities. Hence, in its process of this variation in the mental aspects of self and the attraction to the environment of self, the entity becomes analytical in its relationships to individuals. Then, the entity is a good character analyst of individuals; and may aid many a person or individual through these abilities and associations in the present, in finding themselves and their relationships to the varied experiences, both mental and material, that come as their lot or their activity. From the astrological aspect from Jupiter’s sojourn, these have been as material experiences in the entity’s activities. Since the receding of Jupiter from its activity of influence in the experience of those in the earth that are influenced by its presence in the relative position of earth’s activities, there is in the entity’s mental forces the receding from the associations, and the greater desire within self becomes more active to be not merely ALONE but to divert self’s relationships with so much of such activity from association. This will again change when there is seen, in the coming year - the latter portion of same, more of a conjunction with the influences of Jupiter and Mars in the entity’s activities, tempered with Venus, when there will be - in the experience of the entity - more of a concrete activity as directed to particular groups that have been afflicted with, or are under the influence of, Mars. Hence those that are in that position of being influenced by wrath, or temper, or activities within selves that have brought about detrimental influences in their experience, will be drawn to the body’s association. Not those of mental derangements, but those of mental weaknesses in and through the weaknesses of the body-physical. These, we find, will be the greater attraction towards the entity, because of the entity’s ability to aid such relations, such associations, in their activity in the present.
-
From Mars influence, then, we find there is rather the concerted personality in which the body in its present experience may be said to be one very determined in the activities of itself in the mental and material associations; and always ready to argue the points that are felt by self to be the true or right manner in which any condition might be acted upon, whether pertaining to the material things, the mental associations, or the equivocal of their concerted activity in relationships to things, people, places, activities of every nature. While the determination does not always reach that place as of stubbornness in the associations, yet the entity may often concede the matter and STILL hold the same opinion within self and attempt to adjust self to the relationships that are brought about by circumstances in the experience. This again is in the present experience where the entity is using will for mental and soul development. While it is true that to many any purpose, any aim, is an inflexible law, those that find fault make THEIR activities as the inflexible without reference to that which is true or Truth in itself. Hence those that reason not from materiality but from the soul’s development, or from the spirituality in associations and relations, may find soul development and patience; producing within the soul’s activity that which becomes conscious of the spiritual forces in individual relationships. Hence the entity in the present may be said to be developing spirituality. While many an individual may look on and consider the entity as one of rather material nature and with material desires, yet viewed from soul development the ENTITY is progressing.
-
Those influences from Venus, tempered by Jupiter and Mars, make for the peculiar conditions that are accredited to an influence upon a life in the physical and mental experience of an entity or soul. The entity is not in that position as of being exactly chicken-hearted, yet it is sympathetic, more tender often than those who show a great deal less manly or virile vitality; tender as one that has tempered self in the school of experience in spiritual things. Hence the friendships that are created through the associations of the entity are lasting. While many an individual may call the entity or soul a friend, those whom the ENTITY calls friend he (the entity) considers as self, as self’s relationships, as self’s activities; and these are much fewer in number than those that call the entity friend. This relationship also makes for those experiences in the entity when many an individual many a soul that is weary in mind, in body, makes of the entity a confidant as to their troubles; and the entity turns not a deaf ear, but makes for those activities that OFTEN makes for that personality which draws or attracts individuals to the entity’s environments. And, kept in accord with those conditions that have been set as the manners, means ways, temperaments of activity, especially when Jupiter and Venus with Mars’ influences are in the descendency, will make for those accumulations of the material things of earth such that the entity must then reason as to the manner these may be used in that of soul and spiritual development rather than becoming material- minded in the activities.
-
As to the appearances, then, and those that influence the entity in the present:
-
Before this we find the entity was during that period when Eric the Red made those voyages into the land of the entity’s nativity in the present.
-
The entity then was among those of that company who made the first attempts for the permanent settlement in that land known as the vineland or coasts about Rhode Island, and portions of the land lying north, or Massachusetts as called in the present.
-
Then the entity was strong in body, in mind, and in the activities both on the land and the sea, and was in the name Osolo Din.
-
Through the experience the entity gained and lost; gained in the aid given to the associates and companions in that particular experience of the life at that period; losing only when, with the material gains that came through the associations with the natives of the land, the entity acquired rather power, place and position. Hence, when there was the return to the land of birth in the experience, the entity not only rebelled but brought under submission those with whom he sailed to the land. This brought condemnation and hate in the experience during the latter portion of that sojourn.
-
And in the present, when the entity hates, dislikes, to him that entity scarcely exists. Woe, then, is he whom the entity dislikes, distrusts; for, though he may seek closer relationship and associations with the entity, he will find little forgiveness - as is known in material things in the activity of the entity; yet SPIRITUALLY little hate exists in the heart of the entity from the experience. Yet it may be fired or fanned to real activity.
-
Before this we find the entity was in the Roman periods of oppression, or during those dark days for certain tenet and truths that were being taught in the land.
-
The entity then was among the soldiery of Nero, the oppressor to the Christian peoples, and had the abilities to be masterful in the games in the arena; rather to make by force the activities of the sects that were being persecuted by the feeling of resentment in the emperor.
-
With the associations in the present, the entity allowed what may be called in the earth period carnal loves to change the associations; hence came during the period to meet those in physical combat, and later went to the death or to the end with those peoples whom the entity had come to love.
-
Then, the period may be said to have been one when the soul forces lost and gained; and during the period came much that gives the abilities in the activities of the entity in the present to be of aid to others that are ill in body, and that need those influences that may come from more personal activity within themselves to find that to meet the needs in physical derangements.
-
Hence the games of the Romans, the baths of the Romans, dress of the Romans, are to the entity in the present from that period - of particular interest; and much may be gained by the entity in the present by following those lines of thought pertaining to the particular activity of the entity in the present.
-
Then the entity was in the name Pompeainel.
-
Before this we find the entity was in that land now known as the Egyptian, during those periods when there were the replenishings and rebuildings of that which had been torn down through the rejecting of the activities of the priest and his expulsion from the land.
-
The entity was among those that took little interest in the activities during that period, yet with the return and the establishing of those things that made for the keeping of record during the period as pertaining to the arts of healing, and to those of music, the entity then through those activities brought much to a disturbed people; and aided those that would be called physicians of the day in establishing places of retreat and conditions that might aid the individuals and groups in cleansing their bodies, purifying their minds, by the activities of the body, and by the classifying of the foods during the period.
-
Hence the entity may be said to have developed throughout the sojourn or the experience in the land, and in the present there may be much gained in not only material things but the satisfying and bringing of contentment through the activities of the body in classifying activities for individuals, both as to their physical and mental activities, and also as to their thoughts, as to their activities in muscular and brain forces, and in those things that create for the BEING a channel for the mental and spiritual forces to manifest through. Yet there must be maintained in those influences that may be created for the better conditions in the experience of the entity, that each environ each influence, must have its inception in the spiritual forces of individuals, rather than for material only; and this should be stressed not only in self but in the advice and counsel that may be given to all whom the entity may contact.
-
Before this we find the entity was in that land that was known as the Atlantean, during those periods when the destructive influences were active in the experience of those that were classed as the Believers and the Unbelievers.
-
The entity was among those who aided in preparing much that was a destructive force, yet was to be used by the Believers in ridding themselves of those that oppressed the peoples.
-
Hence the entity gained in the experience, losing only in those periods when there were the warrings between the peoples that made for the destruction of the land.
-
So, with the associations of the period, the entity may give much to others, give much to those whom the entity contacts, such as to bring peace, harmony, in their own earth’s material activities.
-
The name was then Arptl.
-
As to the abilities of the entity, and that to which it may attain and how, in the activities of the entity now known as [438]:
-
In summing the abilities, the activities that make for both mental and material experiences in aiding individuals to find themselves - whether from the material aspect or from the mental influences, tempered with spiritual values in their experience - will make for that which will bring to self material gains, mental satisfaction and SPIRITUAL development in self.
-
Hence, lending self in the associations in all forms of activity that bring such to the minds and bodies of the son of men will be that channel, that influence, that will make for the development in that life, this life, the other life, to which the souls of men are appointed, for the PREPARATION of that soul for its dwelling with the Creator in eternity.
-
Ready for questions.
-
(Q) Is it advisable to continue my efforts to secure an establishment in Radio City? (A) Advisable to continue. As we find, as we have indicated, this should culminate in the latter portion of the coming year, when those influences from the efforts of others from without are attracted to the activities of the entity, and bring better relationships.
-
(Q) Are there any special connections or approaches that you would advise me to make in regard to this? (A) The regular line of activities, the regular line of associations, as we find, during those periods necessary for making the proper association and connection, will bring those through whom, to whom, and how the activities will be brought about for making the proper connections.
-
(Q) Should I continue my lines of endeavor as carried on in the city or extend my efforts in my country place? (A) Carry on in the city, but extend the efforts in the country place; for these, as indicated, will make for those retreats through which many may - as through no other channel - find that necessary for awakening within them that which will try to carry on.
Temper all activities with spiritual thought, spiritual reactions. These will make for surety in self, finding - as it were - that which makes for the appeal not only in self but to that which finds the answer of the God influence in every soul!
-
(Q) Any other advice or guidance for the body at this time? (A) Look first always into self, and that which prompts self’s activities. Find in that thou doest that it is NOT for self alone, but rather that the love of the Father - as shown in thee - may be reflected in thy acts to thy brethren everywhere.
-
We are through for the present.

R7. 6/20/41 Report by [438] at A.R.E. Congress: ”…In November, 1933, after I had been negotiating with the Rockefellers for about a year for a large space in their recent development, I was just about ready to give up. I was aiming to have the finest and best equipped institute in New York and I needed a large amount of space for it. Now space in the Center cost a lot of money and so does physiotherapy equipment. For the money I had to spend I couldn’t get the amount of space necessary. After working back and forth for over a year I had decided to drop negotiations rather than have an inferior establishment. Then in a life reading, the date of which was the 11th of November, 1933, I thought I’d sneak in a little question for advice on the Rockefeller Center proposition. [See 438-1, Par. 31-A.]
“This reading was quite encouraging after the year of doubt and seeming impossibility of getting set in Rockefeller Center. In fact, it gave me almost too much confidence - as you will see later in this story. Now to go ahead with the results of the reading.
“Sure enough, fourteen months after the reading in December, 1934, the lease was sent to me for signature with everything I had been working for incorporated in it. Now comes the even greater test and a characteristically human trait in me. During the negotiations and plans for my establishment, I found that my needs for space were even greater. I needed another thousand square feet of space. Would I try to change the terms of the lease or let well enough alone?
“Well, with the confidence generated by the Cayce reading, I took the long chance - I asked for an extra thousand feet. And was I happy and Cayce vindicated. The Rockefellers okayed my request and I got the extra thousand feet.
“Now a personal observation. I have always believed that it is as much fun to give as to receive. In the past years of my association with the Cayces, I have had only the greatest satisfaction in my own experience of his readings and also in my relations with those who have come to me with Cayce readings. So happy have been these past years and so highly successful have things turned out, that I have now and then, after talking with Edgar Cayce or Hugh Lynn about a certain patient or other, been glad to give that patient any treatments suggested by the reading without any charge. This was for persons who were unable to pay. May I now take this opportunity publicly here at the Congress of the Association for Research and Enlightenment and in the presence of the Cayces themselves to say this.
“If at any time a person who has secured a reading from Mr. Cayce in which the type of work that is done at my Institute is indicated and that person is unable to pay for the treatment, I will gladly give them all the necessary treatments free of charge.
“Let this be my modest tribute for the help Edgar Cayce has given to humanity at large and to me personally. This is a tribute to this good man - this great man - your friend, and I am proud to be able to say, my friend - Edgar Cayce.”
R8. 5/16/30 Ltr. to EC from Mrs. [5502] who had been referred to EC by Vincent Lopez:
“For years gone by I have had some antrum trouble with severe colds, but just now my trouble is in my left knee. I have seen doctors, some who want to operate and others who suggest serum treatment, but so far Dr. Harold J. Reilly of The Reilly Service has helped me more than any of them. I believe you know him as you have sent several people to him (a Mrs. [5439] for one), and I would like to know if you can suggest anything else for him to do, or do you consider an operation best? …” [See 5501-1 series.] [She enclosed this Feb. 1930 leaflet about The Reilly Service.]
THE LIFE O’ REILLY
Published in the interest of Staying Young by the Reilly Service VOL. 1 FEBRUARY, 1930 Number 1.
AND NOW ITS SMART TO BE HEALTHY!
With the cigarette manufacturer’s taking the cough out of each carload; the cod-liver oil industry bottling sunshine and the dairymen bottling health, - and “in bond” to boot, as attested by the Grade “A” cap; cough drops labeled “The cheapest health insurance in the world;” a disinfectant discovering itself “for years the standard with hospitals and physicians;” 45,512 physicians endorsing a mouth wash; 45,512 endorsing another mouth wash (any duplication here?); number 1 for teeth easy to whiten and number 2 for teeth impossible to whiten; 772 doctor’s declaring, affirming, alleging and signing thereto that a popular baking powder is most helpful
- health in dust form so to speak, or, simply Gold Dust; and etc., etc., etc., it gradually comes home to us through the sagacity of a tobacco prince that whereas in aviation its speed and in radio its tone, while in shopping its thrift and in a cigarette its taste that the public demands above all others features, so in any consideration of food or household commodity today, health’s the thing.
We have become health conscious. Was it a book salesman who passed on the tip and with it the explanation thereof of the word “halitosis” and forthwith was deluged with orders from advertising agencies for newer and larger dictionaries? A forlorn looking citizen was graphically portrayed in a recent ad of a yeast company: “Just making the motions, - a victim of cachexia (run down condition).” The health angle is today the handle for stimulating desire and action in the public breast and purse. It but remains for a junior copy-writer all wrong with enthusiasm so far to make the top peg in the sales promotion business by discovering what the irrefutable Fifty Million Frenchmen brush their teeth with or pomade their locks with. Or was that the abstraction of the Fifty Million in Lucien Bernhard’s Rem poster battling their way through driving winds and snow, safe in the arms of their cough mixture.
R9. SUNSHINE AND YOU
There is nothing new under the sun, - save a fickle coat of tan. But if the sun shines down on the same old world and problems each day, it can at least renew its favors if we but give it even timid cooperation. The sun as a remedial agent was hailed centuries ago: “Sol maximum remediorum est” wrote Pliny. The sun cure was practiced by Hippocrates in Greece; Aristole surprised the sun at work in noting the effect of daylight in putting the green coloring in vegetable matter. Rome’s prominent citizens built solarium’s in their villas, and while, (in step with the debunking tendencies of the new realism) modern commentators bid us regard the fact that these Roman arbiters of elegance were the original sun-dodgers, sleeping away the day in preparation for the night’s routinous orgies (which were staged, ironically enough, in the solaria), let us in turn bid the debunking historians of today to recall the sorry fate of this sun-dodging empire, and to drive home the point that if these Roman leaders sat in the sun for half the time they reclined in the moonlight, they’d have been visited by more substantial ideas than another votive offering to Bacchus and Venus.
Early to bed and early to rise And you’ll never meet any prominent guys.
So sing the Romans reincarnated in the 20th century. But much water has flown under the bridge in these centuries, and now science has removed the sun cure from the empirical stage, and has established its therapeutic practice on a large scale. In the bargain, it has disarmed the tired business man of his excuse that he must pursue his business from 9 to 5, for sunshine as a therapeutic measure now works on a 24 hour daily schedule, thanks to the isolation of the ultra-violet and the infra-red rays of the sun, and the production and release of this energy through carbon and mercury “lamps.”
Over in England, though the centre of the Empire on which the sun never sets, they have made perhaps more progress with the “sun lamps” than any other country. As is well known, London is a foggy town, but they have their happily named “Sunlight League” connected with which are some of England’s most distinguished medical men, operating a sun-bath establishment close to “the Heath.”
In America, the “Vita” Glass is being installed in schools and hospitals, as a salute to the sun’s beneficence. This glass is transparent not only to light, as the old glass, but admits the active ultra-violet rays of the sun. Still, its virtues are negative, merely minimizing the fault of ordinary glass in restraining the admission of the biologically active rays. Several other glasses sympathetic to ultra-violet irradiation have come into use in Europe, such as Hoviglass, Windolite, Vitreo Colloid, Sanalux, - all of them having the same principle as Vita-glass, namely, a large percentage of quartz in its composition.
Limitations of space do not permit us to discourse further on the findings of the “sun manufacturer’s.” Suffice it to say that it is the fashion of the century in hospitals, sanatariums, etc., and that, unlike synthetic foodstuffs and “hard likker,” the irradiations of the authentic sun lamps are actually as good as exposure to Old Sol himself, and superior from the point of view of time, insofar as the lamps are concentrated sungivers, expending as much benefit in five minutes as the master himself does in almost as many hours.
Recent newspaper despatches from Washington told the world that the only variation in the 7 A.M. backyard exercise of President Hoover and his set-up squad on the morning of the first snowfall this season was that the post-exercise hot coffee was served indoors instead of in the California gardens, where the steaming pot is usually dispensed. This exercise is no mere child’s play or whim, but an integral part of the Presidential day. Promptly at 7 A.M. every day, the President and eleven government officials go through a rigorous workout for thirty minutes, using the medicine ball and other athletic paraphernalia. The snow blanket on the lawn failed to dampen their spirits, in fact, it probably “wet” their appetites for the days’ first “official” duty.
And while we’re on the subject, says Judge, a Chicago doctor says a diet of soy beans will cure diabetes. Most people would prefer the diabetes.
PATOU GOES WAISTLINE
Dame Fashion, like the curate’s egg, is not all bad. If it has wrecked the digestion of Mr. Average Man with its costs, it has cautioned Mrs. Individual Woman to practice girth control. Woman’s dress, since the war, has been founded on petty variations on one major theme: slenderness to the evaporation point, - with an inch added to the knee-line skirts one season, and subtracted the next season.
Adieu to the chicken’s-neck ideal of femininity. The normal middle twixt the skinny and “the woman who is not slender,” as Lane Bryant adroitly gets around her address to la femme grasse, is back with us. According to the astrologer’s charts the new styles are here for a seven years’ visit, so it behooves the wise lady to take them and like them.
Now normalcy is of all things the most difficult to attain, being as it is but another word for Ideal. It calls for one to keep their wits about them in the adjustment from the chicken-neck style to the happy medium. Normalcy takes all things into consideration; hence to keep fit for the styles these seasons will not cause you to undermine your health and look like anaemic Lily. It calls for sanity in striking the happy balance of nature’s figure.
The waistline becomes the center of gravity with a vengeance in the new modes. Now there are several vulnerable spots in waistline measurements; diet, exercise, message, etc. The press-agented “18 day diet” has been tried but not honored, for the very simple reason that it leaves the nicest dose, of acidity in the system that any diet possibly could. But let us not throw the baby out with bath, especially in a sermon on normalcy. Diet has its place in the normal regime; the 18-day diet was not chemically correct. It was a very stringent measure, and accomplished its purpose: namely, to reduce in short order theatrical workers answering a producer’s hurry-all.
The word diet has been bartered about since the war in such loose fashion that it is necessary to restore it to its original state of grace with a definite discussion, which we will essay in a later bulletin. Right now we are concerned with the opening and most telling shot at waistline natural proportions. And this centers around the question of systematized exercise. A proper system of exercise is probably the greatest naturalizing agent in the physical realm, taking precedence over diets and other measures. It tunes the body into its natural proportions and outline, adding weight where necessary and burning it up where it does not belong.
Where exercise is contra-indicated, one can have recourse to a variety of therapeutic agencies. Those who would reduce without exercise will find effective the new German “baths” commonly known as the “paraffin bath.”
WEEKLY PROGRAM OF THE BUSY BUSINESS MAN WHO SAID HE COULDN’T POSSIBLY FIND THE TIME TO TAKE CARE OF HIMSELF
MONDAY - Well, don’t feel so good today. Guess I ate and drank too much yesterday. Sits at desk for about one hour thinking it over. Then works for about two hours. Goes to lunch. Eats a big meal. Meets a few friends. Sits around and talks, because he feels he’d rather do anything than work. Gets back to office about three. Works about two hours. Feels all in. Goes home.
TUESDAY - Gets to desk at 9. Works well for a few hours. Feels lazy. Feels he needs a drink to brace up. Gets one. Peps him up till 12. Goes to dinner. Has a big meal and a few drinks. Gets back 1:30. Goes to work all pepped up. Lasts about one hour. Then dozes off. Half-awake and half-asleep for the rest of the afternoon. Does about three hours work all day.
WEDNESDAY - Gets up early. Thinks about all the work left undone. Gets to office at 8. Works fast and is all keyed up. Resolves to skip luncheon. Sends out for bar of chocolate. Keeps at it. Becomes a bit nervous. About 3 develops a headache. Gradually grows worse, till at 4, unable to stand it further, goes home.
THURSDAY - Goes to office with tired feeling. Has several important business conferences. Goes to lunch. No appetite. Comes back. Works a while then feels tired and sits back and sits back to rest. Thinks of ball game, fishing, and everything else but business. His associates passing by by think the master mind is working out some gigantic business coup.
FRIDAY - Gets to office at 9. Works steadily till 12. Out to luncheon. Returns at 1. Plunges into work. Pepped up with the thought of a two-day week-end vacation. Tires in a few hours. Looks at self in mirror. Remembers the clean-cut youth of a few years back who never felt tired. Resolves to get outdoors over the week-end and play golf.
WEEK-END - Plays golf. Walking and fresh air is fine. After golf, indulges in a few lifting and gargling exercises in the locker room. Score gradually gets better (vocally). Has big dinner. After dinner develops the biceps, by holding a few heavy hands of cards. Gives his lungs a treat by changing brand of cigarettes.
Youth is passing. Mentality is running in grooves. The body has become a burden.
To stay young, one must return to the physical activity of youthful years. Rid the body of its accumulated poisons. Stretch and make limber the muscles and joints. Give the lungs a little fresh air. Rest the stomach occasionally. Then will the joy, the optimism, and the ambition of youth return. Let the Reilly Service show you the way.

What the Reilly Service Means
Primarily, the Reilly Service has been developed for the purpose of revitalizing the human body; it represents the result of much study and observation of thousands of individuals, but at the same time this has not led to the formulation of set rules.
The Reilly Service is distinctly a personal adaptation of the various methods and systems of physical therapy that have been tested over a period of years and found to be scientifically correct.
No attempt is made to bend the individual to the system. His or her case is given careful attention and study so that the best results are secured in the minimum amount of time.
Hundreds of Satisfied Individuals
We have served hundreds of men and women in all walks of life. The great majority of them have come back to us year after year, and have eagerly testified to the benefits which they have received from the Reilly Service. Some celebrities who stay young by using our service are:
Gloria Swanson, Pauline Garon, Lois Moran, Lois Wilson, Evelyn Brent, Arthur Tracy, Rosa Low, G. Gatti-Casazza, Frederick Shorr, Anna Fitzhui, Vincent Lopez, Beniamino Gigli, Lowell Sherman, Colin O’More, Fanny Hurst, Michio Itow, Sigurd Nilssen, Rafaelo Diaz, Walther Kirchoff, G. Schurtzendorf, R. Laubenthal, Countess A. Albani.
Five Features of the Reilly Service
MASSAGE. A passive form of exercising the body, or any part of it. In numerous kinds of human disorders, massage is more beneficial than drugs. But the massage must be therapeutically correct, and your doctor knows what will be done in our rooms.

REILLY HEALTH SERVICE RCA BUILDING ROCKEFELLER CENTER NEW YORK
Mr. Edgar Cayce c/o Association for Research & Enlightenment Inc. Virginia Beach, Va.
Dear Mr. Cayce:
Sorry I was unable to get down to the convention this week but between vacations and putting new help on and a thousand other little things, it was impossible for me to get away. Was the convention a big success, and what did they all do? The last time Hugh Lynn was in town he spoke to me of sponsors for some research readings. I will go along on some of these in the Fall, (September or October).
Mr. Franklin Bradley was in to see me and spent a few days at the Sun Air Farm. He is a fine chap personally and I think he tackles problems from an intelligent and aggressive standpoint. We might get together on something. [In re Health Rooms, etc.?]
Hoping this finds you and yours in the best of health, I am;
Sincerely yours, H. J. Reilly REILLY HEALTH SERVICE
P.S. If you are coming to New York in the near future be sure to let me know. HJR
R12. 12/37 READER’S DIGEST article: EASY DOES IT by Harold J. Reilly as told to Frederick Tisdale
By a health expert whose “human service station” at Rockefeller Center specializes in reclaiming middle-aged business men, society women, stage and screen stars
A 55-year-old banker came into my place one day announcing that he was slowing up. He hoped that some bag-punching, boxing and wrestling would make him feel like a kid again.
I told him that he would have to be examined by a doctor before I would allow him to take any exercise. It developed that he was afraid of an examination. He was losing sleep; when he went to bed his heart hammered so loudly that he wondered why it didn’t keep the household awake. The doctor, finding it was just a case of nerves, prescribed a routine of curative baths and massage, ending with light exercise, which straightened the man out.
A younger man, an ex-college athlete, expected to get back into condition by playing handball. The physician found that he had a heart lesion, the result of former too-strenuous exertions. Our verdict, “No exercise,” probably added years to his life.
Here are examples of chances men take because of the old Sandow complex. Naturally a youngster hankers for bulging biceps with which to awe his companions or his best girl. At this age hard competitive games serve to work off excess energy; but the trouble is that muscle worship carries over into maturity, causing untold damage. Through too violent exercise men irreparably harm the only body they will ever possess.
Even the old-fashioned private gymnasium and health farm are often offenders. These muscle manufactories attract customers by the glamour of the retired prize-fighters and wrestlers who run them. They specialize in violent activity, often with insufficient physical examination to see how much punishment the victim’s internal machinery can stand. Pride often keeps an older man going until he is ready to drop - and showers, alcohol rubs, perfunctory massage afterwards won’t make up for the vital forces that he has lost.
Fortunately this type of gristle mill is losing out. So is the basement Turkish bath, once numerous in every city. Here one could get steamed out, then shocked back to life with a cold plunge. By submitting to the kneading, rubbing, slapping of a big attendant, the patient kidded himself into thinking he was getting a real massage. We call this “musical treatment,” producing more sound than benefit. Whatever uplift the patron feels from such ministrations is apt to be deceptive. He has expended vitality that is hard to recover.
In modern treatment, muscles are the last things we worry about. We are interested in seeing that the patient leaves the gym with more energy than when he came in. To provide effortless exercise which will not strain the heart or other organs, the services of a trained masseur are invaluable. Incidentally, this country now produces masseurs as good as those in Sweden or any other country. Apparatus of various kinds is of course used. I can place a person flat on a padded table and with an electrical machine produce any desired movement of limb or muscle. Small sandbags are used to increase resistance to movement and give the effect of physical exercise. The patient feels nothing but the mysterious, involuntary actions of his muscles. Under the guidance of physicians such treatment is valuable in overcoming the results of rheumatism and slight paralytic strokes. The heat from the current also is beneficial, aiding massage in loosening stiff joints and muscles.
In many conditions baths are helpful. For heart cases carbon dioxide gas is liberated in the water under carefully controlled pressures and temperatures. This lowers or raises the blood pressure, stimulates surface circulation, all without strain on the heart.
Cases of extreme fatigue with high blood pressure are treated with oxygen baths. This bath is also a powerful sedative to the nervous system. Circulation is promoted, and muscles are relaxed. The concentration of the blood in muscles is increased and therefore the blood pressure is lowered.
Water percussion massage is valuable for nervous or high-strung people. Streams of water, hot and cold, are directed over the muscular portions of the body. By varying them and playing them on the lower limbs, blood can be brought down from the brain. Circulation can be stimulated wherever needed, the nerves relieved of congestion.
I use sun lamps in small regular exposures as a matter of routine. Their ultraviolet rays supply the important vitamin D to the body, particularly during the months when sunlight is not available.
I find that most men are less than 25 percent efficient. Exercise which they think is good for them is often a senseless burning of vitality.
Consider the habits of a typical business man: At 6:30 he takes a hasty shower, throws on his clothes, wolfs his breakfast. Then he races to a train, is whirled into town.
He arrives at his office with jaws clenched, every muscle tense. Already he has used up so much energy that his brain is fagged. Work piles up. A hasty lunch becomes necessary. His breakfast was insufficient so he overeats. In the afternoon he tries to overcome his sluggishness by chain-smoking cigarettes.
There is no rest in the evening. His wife has made a dinner and bridge date. So our poor devil undresses, bathes, dresses again. He gulps a couple of cocktails as bracers for what’s ahead. At dinner he overeats once more. Until he drags himself to bed that night he tries to rouse and exhausted brain with alcohol and tobacco. On Saturday and Sunday he adds a few rounds of golf, even more tobacco and alcohol, and gets to bed later than usual.
This man thinks that he is building himself up because he “exercises regularly.” Instead he is tearing himself down. You can cripple your car by forcing it up a steep hill in high gear. You can do the same with your bodily machinery.
Remember that the mind is master of the body. Give it first call. The hours our business man spends trying to put on muscle could be spent to better advantage resting his brain and body. Rest has cured more people than all the medicine in the world.
We need healthy bodies to generate energy. Conservation of this energy through relaxation makes long and happy lives. We need only enough exercise to make our organs work properly and to make us sleep soundly for at least six to eight hours every night.
Another thing: if you don’t feel well, avoid sympathetic friends. I can put a nervous person to bed by anxious questions about his health. A good plan is to forget yesterday, ignore tomorrow, live today. For there is no worse poison than that induced by worry.
Because of overexertion most vacations do more harm than good. To get a real vacation tell your friends you have gone away, cut off the telephone, stay home and rest.
The trouble with most people is that they haven’t enough will power to abstain from over-indulgence. Practice moderation. A truly efficient man has a quality of courage and tenacity that sets him above men who seem to be his mental or physical equal. This ability to live intelligently can be developed. You can train yourself to avoid the things you know are harmful. Just as you will endure pain and overcome fear to gain an end, so in the same way, through courage and tenacity, you can acquire fixed habits of right living.
R13. 12/6/38 GD’s note: Dr. Reilly spoke on an A.R.E. program with Edgar Cayce in N.Y. entitled “THREE DOCTORS AND A PSYCHIC.” The other two were Frank P. Dobbins, D.O., and Henry S. W. Hardwicke, M.D., all telling their experience with the readings. [See 10/15/51 SL article by L. J. S. G.]
R14. 8/59 A.R.E. Bulletin article: “On November 7, 1958, the VIRGINIAN-PILOT, Norfolk daily newspaper, carried a wire service report on discovery of elaborate Roman baths near the Israeli beach resort of Ashkelon on the Mediterranean.
“Now fully excavated from an 80-foot covering of sand, these are the first Roman baths yet found in the Holy Land, once a Roman colony. They consist of two large installations, one for men and one for women, and are said to have been luxurious even by modern standards.
“Archeologists describe how a pampered Roman matron would rest comfortably in a built-in stone seat with hot water up to her neck, while attendants administered massage. The description continues: ‘A central furnace room wafted hot breezes through the baths, making sure that no chill fall or winter breeze would bring forth a single goose pimple. Additional heat was fed into the steam rooms where the ladies pounded off excess inches. There were also purification chambers, where the customers were subjected to alternate blasts of hot steam and dry furnace air to make the skin soft and rosy, and help with the pound-shedding problem. Paintings and sculptures found here show that the ancient cosmetics business was a thriving one. Once scrubbed, massaged and reduced, the women entered small individual rooms where attendants gave them pedicures and where delicate olive oil was patted into the skin. Special hair oil imported from East Africa was then rubbed into milady’s tresses. Perfume made of rosebud extract was applied, and special mouth rinses made of a mixture of peppermint and lemon juice completed the sweetening job.’…”
R15. 8/15/73 GD’s note: Today at lunch at The Marshalls, I sat at a table with New Jersey people attending this Week of Attunement at A.R.E. The group was enthusiastic about a poem which Dr. Harold J. Reilly wrote last night and read to his class this morning, after talking about his own Life Reading from Edgar Cayce. I prevailed upon Dr. Reilly to let me make this poem a Supplement to his reading, since he has always been so generous in sharing his Life Reading with A.R.E. audiences.
From the mystery of Atlantis to Egypt’s health and song, I often pause to ponder where I really do belong.
It was in Rome’s arena that I tested the strong and bold, But compassion for the persecuted would very soon unfold.
Then another span with life anew In lands far north the Vikings knew.
So pass the years like another day, from December snow to flowers of May. I wonder what my fate will be if my hands hold out to eternity.

R19. SPOKES IN THE WHEEL OF THE ROTARY CLUB OF NEW YORK December 1980 LIVE THE YEARS - DON’T COUNT THEM
Dr. Reilly, a fellow N.Y. Rotarian, received a standing ova- tion upon completing his talk, “Live the years, don’t count them.” It was well deserved in recognition of his outstand- ing presentation.
Harold’s remarks and impressive demonstration of personal fitness served as an inspiration for all.
He lives what he practices and practices what he preaches.
The question was asked “What is the best exercise?” His answer “The best exercise is the one you do.”
The importance of walking and moderate exercise was stressed.
Dr. Reilly displayed a tremendous sense of humor, pride and joy in his work with a convincing and pleasant way of presenting his subject, and with utmost confidence.
Harold has the capacity to enjoy himself stating the years 40 to 80 should be our productive years, and he is a perfect example of how a person could be. When asked how he feels about being 85, he responded with his usual enthusiasm, “My motto at present is ‘Hang On!’ I’m making a specialty of geriatrics - retarding old age - I’m in no hurry to reincarnate again!” (If you did not know, Harold is a reincarnate Roman Centurion and if you look hard at him you can really believe that he was.)

SUBJECT: The Cayce-Reilly Health SERVICE.
This should be the name. It is - will be - a unique service, not duplicated anywhere in the world! The term “Health Center” or “Spa” does not say what it is; it gives the impression that we are patterning after other spas or health centers - which is not true [better not be true!].
In the early nineteen-twenties Dr. Harold J. Reilly operated a successful establishment at 1908 Broadway, N.Y.C., called THE REILLY SERVICE. In 1930 Edgar Cayce started referring patients to him, specifying which type of service he should give them, sometimes adding new “disciplines” [as Dr. Reilly called them] which he had not heretofore used. He added them, and kept adding them through the years, to accommodate and help the patients who were sent to him through or by the readings.
On Nov. 12, 1933 Dr. Reilly obtained a Life Reading from Edgar Cayce in which he asked about continuing his efforts to secure an establishment in Radio City; also he asked about extending his efforts in his country place (called Sun Air Farm). The reading advised him to do both and predicted success.
Dr. Reilly wrote on Nov. 4, 1934, reporting on his Life Reading, that “RCA Bldg. worked out just as reading said; also farm, which I was contemplating selling, made better showing this year than ever before.” [See 438-1 Reports; also 438-6. When I get through adding validating material in date sequence, giving a history of Dr. Reilly and his work, including correspondence from and to Edgar Cayce (as I am doing with the [254] series on “the work”), there will be at least 2 to 3 inches of supplementary data with index behind 438-1. Please read what is already there (in the Library Copy), which includes early pamphlets, fliers and articles on his Reilly Service, announcements of his early books, etc., etc., also listings of his lectures at our Congresses, etc., most of which were printed in our Searchlights.]
For many years Dr. Reilly was President of The New York State Society of Physiotherapists, Inc., and, of course, is still well connected with it.
On April 10, 1954 Dr. Reilly wrote Hugh Lynn accepting his invitation to speak at the June 1954 Congress on “THE PHYSICAL BODY IS THE RESULT”, saying “You can title me as Harold J. Reilly, Doctor of Science, Founder of The Reilly Health Service, Rockefeller Center, N.Y.C., Author of ‘THE SECRET OF BETTER HEALTH’. While I have the doctorate in Chiropractic and Naturopathy and Science, I don’t want to be confused with or mistaken for a Doctor of Medicine [M.D.]. I am in the field of healing, not a medicine man, or so I like to believe; treating the person, not the disease.
The write-up articles in Reader’s Digest and Coronet referred to my institute as ‘A Human Service Station’.
“Other articles on my place have appeared in Fortune, Magazine Digest, Better Homes & Gardens, Holiday, etc., and many newspaper articles in the U.S. and abroad. Use what you want of the material. Please send me copies of my previous talks at the Congresses, also any karma and health material you can spare. P.S. We’ll [he and his family] be in Key West until April 25th.”
GD, continuing: In late 1959 or early 1960 [?], about two years after his wife Vera [Elvira] died, Dr. Reilly started spending two days in his establishment in Rockefellow Center [Closed 5/15/65] and retired to his Sun-Air Farm on Moosepac Lake in Oak Ridge, New Jersey. Actually, though, he never retired but continued to work harder than ever, his former patients and new ones they referred continuing to make a beaten path to his door. His Sun-Air Farm stationery listed: H. J. Reilly, Ph.T.D.SC.; Betty Billings, Ph.T.; Mrs. A. Kornylak, Ph.T.
His 6/2/61 ltr. to HLC on this letterhead read: “Dear Hugh Lynn: Just a line to say ‘Hello’ and hope this fines you and the A.R.E. going bigger and better… My good friend and well known writer Jess Stearn and his wife are planning to be with us at the Congress. He is very much interested in the work of your father and the A.R.E. I believe he is interested in gathering material for either a series of articles or a book…P.S. Jess Stearn has been a feature writer on the Daily News for many years; also an Associate Editor on NEWSWEEK. He is now devoting his full time to writing. His latest book has been on the best seller list for over five weeks (7 to 12) - THE SIXTH MAN. One of his books, THE WASTED YEARS, is rated tops in the field of Juvenile Delinquency… P.S. #2 - I’m in N.Y. Monday and Tuesday. You can call collect either N.Y. CO-5-8481 or this home number (OX-7-7434) after 6 P.M. [in re reservations for a cottage, 3 or 4 bedrooms, that we could rent for 4 to 7 days during your Congress].”
GD, continuing: And so on - see additional pertinent correspondence, in date sequence through the years, under 438-1 Reports.
In January 1966 Dr. Harold J. Reilly was elected to the E.C.F. Board of Trustees, to fill the vacancy left by the death of Douglas T. Johnston (who was the A.R.E President who advised the forming of the Edgar Cayce Foundation which took place at the A.R.E. Board meeting in Jan. 1946).
In January 1967 Dr. Harold J. Reilly was appointed Director of the Physiotherapy Research Division of the Edgar Cayce Foundation:
11/66 A.R.E. NEWS had announced CLINIC - TO BE AT A.R.E.
Over seven tons - 15,000 pounds, to be exact - of equipment have just been delivered at Virginia Beach headquarters preparatory to setting up a clinic on the premises. This clinic will be under the direction of Dr. Harold Reilly of New York, who has recently closed his clinic of long standing in Rockefeller Center in that city and retired to his Health Farm in northern New Jersey near New York, where he still treats a limited number of patients.
Dr. Reilly plans an initial, experimental stage in the establishment of his A.R.E. Clinic, with capable assistants of his choice and under his direction in charge of certain phases of his therapy. From this will gradually be developed a clinic for the drugless physiotherapy such as Dr. Reilly has long practiced with distinction and success.
Dr. Reilly was a young practitioner of the so-called “fringe” healing arts when he began receiving patients sent him by readings from one Edgar Cayce, of whom he had never heard before. Neither had Edgar Cayce heard of him until these recommendations came through in the readings. He eventually went to see Dr. Reilly and they became fast friends.
GD: Dr. Reilly’s long time Assistant Director (AND brother-in-law, William Eigen, Ph.T. [See his name on The Reilly Service letterheads, also his picture on some of the leaflets describing the various therapies available there.]), came down and stayed until he had installed the equipment in the A.R.E. basement [after repairing and rearranging the plumbing, etc., etc.] and helped in training the staff, which included Agnes Nichols as the first nurse on duty. Bill and his wife stayed in Marjorie Bonney’s home for the duration (she was HLC/s sec’ty at the time).
See subsequent correspondence back and forth between Dr. Reilly and Bob Adriance, Hugh Lynn and Dr. McGarey, in re requirements for getting the A.R.E Therapy accredited, or rather the physiotherapy methods recommended in the Edgar Cayce readings. On 2/10/70 Dr. Reilly wrote Dr. McGarey, after a visit “to be at the birth of the A.R.E. Medical Research Clinic”… “Both Betty and I have been very busy since our return. People were lurking around every corner, ready for therapy. But we really love it and it keeps our ego healthy…
I had suggested to Hugh Lynn that the Physiotherapy Dept. should be under supervision, or, better still, a part of the Medical Research Dept. I would continue to cooperate in every way, either as a consultant or an associate… In both N.Y. and N.J. Physical Therapy or Physiotherapy is a branch of medicine. In many states Physical Therapy is only given on doctor’s orders; so, I believe any reports of cases involving Physical Therapy must have the M.D.’s or D.O.’s diagnosis and observations to receive accreditation. The Physiotherapist can be an associate, etc.
I am sending a copy of this letter to Hugh Lynn and Bob Adriance…” [GD: Currently and for the last year or so now, as you know, we have had Dr. Robert H. Miller (D.O.) on our A.R.E. Therapy staff. As we go into the expansion we might eventually need to add other qualified physicians. I remember that Dr. Reilly had an M.D. on his staff - his name was spelled R i l e y!]
NOW, getting back to the REAL reason I felt urged to write this letter - besides urging that the name be THE CAYCE-REILLY HEALTH SERVICE:
I think Dr. Reilly will agree with me that the installing of a SWIMMING POOL is a VERY LOW PRIORITY - IF a priority at all. We need to concentrate on building plans which will allow us to give ALL the services which Dr. Reilly had available in The Reilly Service in Rockefeller Plaza, and any others he can think of that will better help us to give the Cayce-Reilly services at the present time. Believe me, this will cost plenty! Only Dr. Reilly can make sure that you have all these facilities. I know the complete facilities were in duplicate - one for men and one for women. There was a ladies’ lounge and a men’s lounge. There were the massage rooms for both. There were all kinds of water treatments including whirlpools, sitz baths, Scotch douches, colonics; a well equipped gymnasium with supervision, so that each person got what he needed - in other words they all didn’t get the same but just the type best for their particular need. [See illustration leaflets of Reilly’s under 438-1 Reports.] You didn’t have to wait for a special day of the week for men or women, [like our local spas] but you could come any day - there were separate facilities.
It will take a mighty lot off water just to give these services and, besides, swimming pools are available all over the beach (besides the ocean!) - most of the hotels have them - some are inside pools. As our Marshalls Hotel is able, and as our season keeps extending more into the fall and winter, perhaps their pool can be enclosed - especially for the winter months - IF this service is found to be a real need. I just don’t think it should be, or needs to be, a part of the Cayce-Reilly Health Service.
Then, too, there is a water shortage in Virginia Beach, especially in the summer time - the City is still trying to arrange for piping extra water from mountain areas. The last two summers the local people have been asked to stint on water in every way possible, not using the hose to water lawns, etc., etc. Not only is the water scarce but expensive.
Maybe it is time now to DIG THAT WELL, which a reading said would give us an abundant supply “and it will be found there will be times when this will have to be used in the conditions as will come about”. See 900-434, Par. 9-A, on 4/9/29 and 254-48, Par. 3-A, 4-A, on 3/7/29 in re shallow well for outside and deep well for inside use at Cayce Hospital. The deep well wasn’t dug because Dr. & Mrs. House wanted the city water for the hospital although the reading said that the deep wellwater would be better than the city water. It cost us [A.N.I.] between two and three thousand dollars to pipe the water from 40th Street, which was the outer edge of the town of Va. Beach. Later, as this north Va. Beach built up, people tapped onto “our” line.
We have just recently - very recently - gotten city sewage connections in this north Va. Beach area. Before that we all had septic tanks.
The town of Va. Beach only became a city in 1963 when it merged with this area (north Va. Beach) and the whole of Princess Anne County to form the new 310 square mile City of Va. Beach.
4/23/70 Robert Adriance wrote Dr. Reilly:
“We do get some communications from physiotherapists. They are interested in our work. A sample letter is enclosed (G. Burgmann).
“Could any system be devised - perhaps a series of [copies of] readings on physiotherapy that you would pick out, or one or two of your books to be read - by which they could become knowledgeable about the Cayce techniques? Then we could refer those individuals to the cooperating physicians in their area (not directly to members)…”
5/20/70 Dr. Reilly’s reply: “A thousand pardons, Bob, for not answering your letter before this. Besides being too busy with patients, the opening of Sun-Air Lakeside Camp, etc., etc., my friends gave me a series of b’day parties. (April 22nd was my 75th.) “I have been thinking up a system of therapy information as you suggested; but in Physiotherapy, massage, Naturopathy, etc., the many States of this country have different laws and regulations. The practitioners must practice their own interpretation of the Cayce readings and keep within the legal scope of their profession.
“When professionals write in for information on any facet of healing, I believe it should be referred to a medical doctor who is aware of the Cayce readings and in sympathy with them. He could then correspond with the cooperating doctor who is nearest to the source of the inquiry.
“Besides the Doctors McGarey in Phoenix, there should be at least one medical doctor with an umbilical string to the A.R.E. at Virginia Beach.
“I think it is most important for a medical physical therapy research department to be set up at Virginia Beach.
“As I mentioned to Hugh Lynn, I would be pleased to serve as a consultant, advisor or associate to such a setup.
“Physiotherapy or Physical Therapy is a branch of medicine. At my last institute in ‘Rockefeller Center’, we took care of many different cases for over 3,000 medical doctors and Osteopaths.
“I attribute my success in helping people to a vast background knowledge and experience. I have doctorate diplomas in Physiotherapy, Chiropractic, Naturopathy and Science; also two years in Osteopathy. This, combined with some ability to analyze and interpret the Edgar Cayce Readings and the help of God has given me some ability to help people. It is both a gift and a responsibility. Perhaps when I am down in June we can talk this over in more detail.
“I want to do everything I can to further the Physical Readings. So many people need their help. I wish I could transfer to others what God has given me and when the readings have good interpretation by those with the proper background, the results border on the miraculous. The more I work with the readings the more I wonder how so much good could come out of one person. And believe me, Bob, the more I use the readings the more I realize how little I know even after fifty-five years of practice.
“I don’t get much time to write and, believe me, this is the longest letter I have written in some time.
“Best to you and yours, Yours for a Healthy Nation, Harold Harold J. Reilly. P.S. You can show this to Hugh Lynn if you wish.”
GD, continuing:
Now, thirteen years later - since Dr. Reilly’s above letter - with all the work that has been done - the Cooperating Doctors and the general recognition of Edgar Cayce as the founder of holistic medicine, our Circulating Files studied by our members including physicians of every type - the wonderful work of our trustees in getting us at last (I think) headed in the best direction - Dr. Reilly’s and Betty’s willingness to help us with the Health Service - (Their book - THE EDGAR CAYCE HANDBOOK [which it has become!] for HEALTH THROUGH DRUGLESS THERAPY) [WHICH ALSO HAS THE BEST INFORMATION ON THE CAYCE DIET THAT HAS BEEN PUBLISHED to date] - how can we miss? ONLY BY FAILING TO PROCEED WITH WHAT WE KNOW TO DO!
Forgive me for my long-windedness on paper - you know I just had to get in my two cents’ worth! But only because I CARE!

HUGH E. DIERKER, OF OCEAN PARK, CALIFORNIA, ASSIGNOR TO EDGAR F. HUGHES, OF LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA
COLON IRRIGATOR - Application filed August 12, 1930, Serial No. 474,784
My invention relates to the medical art and more particularly to a colonic irrigating apparatus.
It has been customary in the practice of colon irrigation to supply fluid to the colon and depend upon gravity or reflex muscular action for the evacuation of this fluid. This practice is a slow, tedious, and unsanitary one, inasmuch as fecal matter and mucoid substances frequently become lodged in a protuberance in the walls of the colon and become hardened, and it is therefore desirable to provide means for forcibly drawing off this fluid in order to dislodge the foreign substances.
It is an object of my invention to provide an apparatus of the class described which includes suction providing means for quickly and efficiently carrying off, in a sanitary manner, the discharged fluids. To accomplish this I provide an insertion member connected to a fluid supply reservoir, through which I supply a solution to the colon by gravity and subsequently draw off this fluid through a discharge passage
connected to the insertion member and a means creating a vacuum.
It is necessary that the extent of the suction exerted in the discharge passage be varied at intervals. This necessitates a variation in the vacuum with which the discharge passage connects in order that the syphon effect may be retarded to a desired extent.
It is an object of my invention to provide an apparatus of the class described which includes means for controlling the rate at which the fluid is drawn off from the colon through the discharge passage, and for proportionately varying the rate of flow in this passage and the degree of suction created therein by the suction providing means.
In some cases it is desirable to supply solution to the colon rapidly and at other times very slowly, and it is therefore desirable to provide control means for varying the volume of fluid provided by the supply reservoir.
It is another object of my invention to provide in an apparatus of this class, means for varying the flow of the solution from the supply reservoir to the colon or for completely stopping this flow at intervals.
It is likewise desirable, for obvious reasons, to have facilities for the observation of the fluid passing through the discharge passage. It is therefore another object of my invention to provide in a colonic irrigating apparatus means for continuous observation of the character of the fluid passing through the discharge passage.
It is a further object of the invention to provide check means arranged in the discharge passage which permits the discharged fluid to flow from the insertion member to the suction providing means, but prevents a flow from the suction providing means toward the insertion member.
It is frequently necessary during colonic irrigation as practiced in the medical art, to stimulate the action of the voluntary and the involuntary abdominal muscles to overcome a partial paralysis of these muscles. This stimulation is accomplished by a treatment known in the art as “sinusoidal modality” or interrupted galvanic modality, these treatments being performed by a device well-known in the art, which comprises, in short, an apparatus including a pair of electric conducting pads adapted to be placed on the back and abdomen of a patient, there being conductors connecting these pads to the device which is adapted to transmit intermittent electrical impulses through the body of the patient with stimulating effect upon the above mentioned abdominal muscles.
The sinusoidal modality and the interrupted galvanic modality treatments, as known in the art, are administered by a device which is an entirely individual unit intended for use independent of other apparatus, such as colonic irrigation apparatus.
It is an object of my invention to provide a colonic irrigation apparatus including means adapted for connection to an auxiliary device for administering the sinusoidal modality or the interrupted galvanic modality treatments so that the last mentioned device is controlled by the operating mechanism of the irrigating apparatus comprising my invention.
I have discovered that the most effective time to administer these stimulating electrical impulses to inactive abdominal muscles is during the period in which suction is being applied to the colon of the patient, these impulses greatly assisting in loosening the hardened fecal matter adhering to the colon and encouraging reflex action of both the voluntary and involuntary abdominal muscles.
It is therefore another object of my invention to provide in the colonic irrigating apparatus described, means operable by the control mechanism embodied in the apparatus to close a circuit included in a device for administering the sinusoidal modality or an equivalent treatment simultaneously with the syphon effect exerted on the colon of the patient, as previously described.
It is another object of my invention to provide novel means of administering these stimulating electrical impulses to the abdominal muscles of a patient by providing a single conducting pad adapted to be applied to the abdomen of the patient, and novel means for completing an electric circuit through the body of the patient by using the fluid within the discharge passage of the apparatus and the insertion member inserted in the colon of the patient as a current conductor.
It is also an object of my invention to provide a method and apparatus whereby it is possible to treat the entire colonic tract electrically or electrochemically by use of a liquid electrode filling the colon and a moveable external electrode which may be applied to the abdomen or back and which is adapted to be moved across the exterior of the abdomen or of the back so as to concentrate the electric activity at various portions of the colon. By placing the electrode on the exterior of the body adjacent one end of the colon, conducting electrical energy from one electrode to the other, and moving the exterior electrode progressively along the portions of the body lying adjacent the colon, the entire colonic tract may be electrically treated, but the electrical application, instead of being general, will be localized progressively throughout the entire extent of the colon. When chemical solutions are employed, the polarity of the electric current may be reversed.
Other objects and advantages will be made apparent in the following specification and the accompanying drawing.
Referring to the drawing:
Fig. 1 is a diagrammatic utility view illustrating a complete apparatus embodying the features of my invention.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the control mechanism of the device with the housing thereof broken away for simplicity of illustration.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view through the suction providing means of the invention taken as indicated by the line 3—3 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a sectional view taken on a median horizontal plane through the operating valve of the device, as indicated by the line 4—4 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary section of an insertion member, such as is readily obtainable commercially, and which is particularly adapted for use with my invention.
In the drawing, 11 indicates a fluid supply reservoir which may be of any desired type and be arranged in any well-known manner to supply a solution at various predetermined temperatures. The numeral 12 indicates an insertion member adapted for insertion in an orifice of the body, this insertion member being connected through control mechanism generally designated by the numeral 13 to the fluid supply reservoir 11.
Referring to Fig. 2 in particular, in which the details of construction of the control mechanism are shown, I provide a housing 14 which may be of a rectangular shape having side walls 15, end walls 16, a bottom 17, and a removable cover plate 18. Extending longitudinally through the housing 14 is a tubular member generally designated by the numeral 19 in which is provided a three-way valve 20, a check valve 21 of an ordinary type, and an ejector 22. All of these members threadedly connected together by suitable lengths of tubing comprise the tubular member 19, which I will hereinafter refer to as the discharge passage. Threadedly connected to the third side of the three-way valve 20 is a laterally extending pipe 19a which projects through the side wall 15 of the housing 14, as shown in Fig. 2, and is provided with a nipple 23 adapted to be connected to a supply pipe 24 in such a manner as to directly connect the pipe 19a to the fluid supply reservoir 11.
As shown in Fig. 2, the extreme outer ends of the tubular member 19 are formed to provide nipples 25 and 26, the nipple 25 being adapted for connection to the insertion member 12 by a suitable length of flexible tubing 27, indicated in Fig. 1, and the nipple 26 being adapted for connection with a discharge line 28 leading to a sewage system.
In Fig. 3 I show the ejector 22 as comprising a body portion 30 having a longitudinally extending primary bore 31 into each end of which a section of the tubular member 19 is threadedly connected, as previously described. Extending obliquely relative to the longitudinal axis of the primary bore 31 and in communication therewith, is a secondary bore 32 into which is threadedly inserted a water supply tube 33. As indicated in Fig. 2, the water supply tube 33 is connected to a water main 34 which extends through an opening in one of the walls 15, this supply tube being connected in any operable manner to a pressure gauge 35 which is positioned exteriorly of the housing 14 to afford visible evidence of the pressure within the tube 33. Placed in the tube 33 at a point adjacent the three-way valve 20 is a quick-throw valve 36 which may be of any well-known type.
Connected to the valve plug 40 of the three-way valve 20 is an operating lever 41 adapted to extend outwardly through a longitudinally extending slot 42 in one of the walls 15 of the housing 14, this lever being operable to rotate the valve plug 40 in such a manner as to cause the supply line 19a to be thrown into communication with the insertion member 12, and subsequently rotated to throw the insertion member 12 into communication with the discharge line 28 for a purpose hereinafter described. Formed integrally with the lever 41 at a point adjacent the three-way valve 20 is an arm 45 adapted to be pivotally connected as by a pin and slot connection 46 to a link 47 which is secured to the gate of the quick-throw valve 36 in the water supply line 33 as indicated at 48 in Fig. 2.
The operation of my invention is as follows. With the fluid supply reservoir 11 containing a predetermined amount of solution at any desired temperature, the insertion member 12 is inserted in the colon of a patient, the operating lever 41 is then moved into the position indicated in dotted lines 50 of Fig. 2 and 4, which causes the valve gate 40 to assume the position shown in full lines in Fig. 4, this position allowing the solution to flow by gravity through the lateral fluid supply pipe 19a, the valve 20, and the flexible tube 27 to the insertion member 12.
If at any time in the period during which the solution is being delivered to the insertion member 12 it is desired to reduce the flow of the solution or to completely stop the flow thereof, the lever 41 may be moved into the position shown in solid lines in Fig. 2, at which time the valve gate 40 of the valve 20 will assume the position indicated by the dotted lines 51 of Fig. 4, which completely stops the flow of the solution.
After the solution has remained in the colon of the patient a desired period of time the lever 41 may be moved into the position indicated by the dotted lines 52 of Fig. 2, which causes the valve gate 40 to assume the position indicated by the dotted lines 53 in Fig. 4, throwing the insertion member 12 into communication with the discharge passage 19. It will be understood by an inspection of Fig. 2 that when the lever 41 is thrown into the position indicated by the dotted lines 52, the arm 45 will swing in the direction indicated by the arrow 55 of Fig. 2, this movement being operable to open the quick-throw valve 36, placing the water supply pipe 33 in communication with the water main 34 and causing water to be delivered under pressure into the secondary orifice 32 in the direction of the arrow 60. It will be seen that this flow of water under pressure when delivered into the primary bore 31, as indicated by the arrow 61 in Fig. 3, will, according to a well-known principle of physics, create a vacuum in the primary bore 31 which tends to exert a suction throughout the length of the discharge passage 19 in the direction of the arrow 62, tending to draw the fluid from the colon of the patient with sufficient force to dislodge foreign substances that may have been secreted therein.
If at any time during the withdrawal of the fluid from the colon of the patient it is desired to reduce the flow or to entirely stop the flow of fluid, the lever 41 may be moved from the position indicated by the dotted lines 52 of Fig. 2 into the position shown in solid lines. The lever 41, the arm 45, and the link 47 cooperate to simultaneously actuate the quick-throw valve 36 and the three-way valve 20 to proportionately reduce the flow of fluid through the discharge passage 19 and the flow of water under pressure through the water supply tube 33 and the secondary bore 32 of the ejector 22, thereby reducing the degree of suction exerted by the ejector upon the discharge passage 19.
The insertion member 12 may be provided with a transparent portion 65, as indicated in Fig. 1, for the continuous observation of the character of the fluid which is being drawn through the discharge passage 19.
In Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawing, as is somewhat diagrammatically indicated, is a device adapted to administer the sinusoidal modality or an equivalent treatment. This device, generally designated by the numeral 70 of Fig. 1, is adapted to be operable as a subsidiary apparatus to the colonic irrigating apparatus of my invention, it being understood that the irrigating apparatus as above described may be operated independently of the apparatus 70. The apparatus 70 includes an electric conducting pad 71, preferably formed of a fibrous material such as felt, which is saturated with water, and is positioned upon the abdomen of the patient. Connecting the pad 71 to a terminal 72 of a current interrupter 72a is a conductor 73 in which is interposed a potential source of current, indicated at 73a in Fig. 1. As shown in Fig. 2, I provide a bracket member 74 mounted within the housing 14 upon one of the walls 15 thereof, this bracket preferably being formed of an insulating material. Secured to the bracket 74 is a spring contact 75 adapted to extend into a position adjacent the end 76 of the arm 45 and in the path of travel thereof. Secured to the bracket 74 is a terminal post 77 connected to the contact 75, this post being connected to the terminal 78 of the current interrupter 72a by a conductor 79, this interrupter being operable to intermittently break and complete the circuit including the conductors 73 and 79.
It will be seen that in the operation of this subsidiary device the contact 75 will be engaged by the end 76 of the arm 45 when the lever 41 is thrown into the position indicated by dotted lines 52 in Fig. 2, which position, as previously described, is operable to throw the insertion member 12 into communication with the discharge passage 19 of the invention. This contact causes current to be delivered from the source of current 73a through the interrupter 72a, the conductor 79, the contact 75, the arm 45, and the body of the valve 20 to the fluid flowing through the discharge passage 19, this fluid acting as an electrode which cooperates with the pad 71, comprising another electrode, to deliver intermittent electrical impulses to the abdominal muscles of the patient.
It is an important feature of my invention that the solution may be delivered to the colon of the patient and be allowed to remain therein for any desired period and then be forcibly withdrawn therefrom without necessitating the removal of the insertion member 12.
It is another important feature of my invention that the flow of the fluid through the discharge passage 19 may be varied in direct proportion to the degree of suction created therein by the suction providing means, this being accomplished by the simultaneous operation of the valves in the water supply pipes and the exhaust passage by the operating lever of the device.
It should be understood that the details of construction of the suction providing member described herein are unimportant to the operation of the device, inasmuch as any well-known syphon, vacuum pump, or suction apparatus may be used satisfactorily in the operation thereof.
It should also be understood that the insertion member herein described has been shown merely for the purpose of illustration, as various types thereof are readily obtainable commercially and equally efficient for use in connection with an apparatus of the type described.
It is another important feature of the invention to provide check means positioned in the discharge passage and being operable to permit fluid to flow from the insertion member to the suction providing device of the invention, but to effectively prevent fluid under pressure from being forced backwardly from the suction providing device to the insertion member. This is important because if the discharge line, connecting the outlet end of the pressure providing device to the sewage, becomes inadvertently obstructed the check means provided in the exhaust passage obviates the possibility of water under pressure being forced backwardly into the colon of the patient.
It is also another important feature in the operation of my irrigating apparatus that when used in connection with the apparatus for administering the sinusoidal modality or an equivalent treatment, the stimulating electrical impulses are delivered simultaneously with the suction that is applied to the colon of the patient, this combination being extremely efficient, inasmuch as the subsidiary apparatus is controlled by the operating mechanism of the irrigating apparatus at the most effective time and without the removal of the insertion member from the colon of the patient.
Although the apparatus herein shown and described is fully capable of performing all the purposes primarily stated, I do not wish to be restricted thereto, as it is apparent that my invention is capable of being embodied in various other forms, all of which come within the scope of the appended claims.
