Mr. [4906] …, Okla.
Dear Mr. [4906]:-
Enclosed you will find the reading [4906-1] as was requested by yourself when here. I am not going to, at this time, make any comment whatever on what the interpretation of the reading is, nor will I say just what my idea is regarding the drilling of the well. I am going to wait to hear from you before I express my own personal opinion. This is as it was gotten in the reading, and it seems to me to carry a great deal. I am in hopes that you will take the time to study this, and will write me exactly how you feel relative to same, for, as I have said, it is only when these readings, and the application of them, become a personal thing, do they mean anything to any of us.
Hope that you will let me hear from you, and that I may see you again in the near future, and hoping to have been of service, I beg to be
Yours sincerely, Edgar Cayce

Dear Mr. Cayce:-
I am in receipt of your reading, and have read same carefully, reading over time after time, trying to get the correct meaning, and there is portions of it that I am unable to interpret at all. I noted your suggestion very carefully to study the reading, and to write you just how I felt about it. This I will try to do, so please excuse me if I am too frank in my questions and my understandings.
First: As I remember my oral agreement with you was that when the reading was to take place, that there was no one to be present in the room but yourself, stenographer, and your wife. Now, from the reading itself marked under the heading of those present the wife does not appear as one present at all, and Linden Shroyer; conductor; does appear instead. Why was this done? Second: The reading that I asked for was a physical reading and I carefully note Mr. Shroyer’s first suggestion to you was to give me a complete MENTAL and SPIRITUAL and physical reading. This I do not quite understand. Please explain.
Third: Now that the reading was held at 4:00 P.M. Friday, November 30, 1923, I note that the Post Office stamp of Dayton, Ohio, on the outside of the envelope shows 4:30 P.M. Saturday, December 1, 1923, over 24 hours after reading was taken. Am I not correct in this statement, that our agreement was that this reading should be copied immediately and mailed to me. Did it of natural necessity take this long to get my reading into the post office? Mr. Cayce, these variations may mean nothing at all, and yet there is something that tells me to ask you about it and your explanations will be entirely satisfactory to me.
Now as for the reading itself it is a wonderful piece of work, as far as I am able to interpret it, and is bound to come from some divine power and I believe in it. Now under the heading “In the blood supply” you hit my case exactly, for in applying for a $50,000.00 life insurance policy the name which I will withhold (for I got the policy later) the most prominent physicians in town, two in number, told me that it was impossible for me to get that policy, reason, that I had a pulmotor heart, or something like that, high blood pressure and one leaky valve, yet I passed an examination later with different doctors and under different circumstances. Now about the nasal and throat cavities this is my case exactly, I have catarrh very badly and in the mornings on blowing my nose there is great clots of blood comes from my head and at nights this drops down my throat and has affected it also as I understand it.
Now under the heading “In the Nerve System” as for being sympathetic this is a positive weakness of mine. I have always been that way. My family has often gotten provoked at me for continually helping some fellow who had hard luck time after time, when they would not turn over a hand to help me should I have needed it. This weakness has cost me a lot of money.
Same heading, second paragraph, this too hits me in every respect in regard to the three shocks, one was a severe shooting scrape of which David Kahn will know about, one an explosion of a gas well high pressure that threw my body twenty-five feet from where I was standing, the other a fall that dislocated my back at the saddle joint, one vertebra slipped over the other leaving me for days in a helpless condition.
You are entirely right about the digestive organs (sometimes good and sometimes bad). I have had this experience that when I would go on a “spree” and drink for as long as three days steady I could vomit and throw up almost pure blood. This I have quit some time ago and do not even have a desire to drink at all.
I do not think you have missed a single point that is of interest in my physical reading, and as for the spiritual and mental, I do not understand myself, and wish I did. I often feel that life is slipping by and I am not getting out of it what I should. About the only pleasure I get in this world is doing something for someone else, yet I believe your work will do more to learn me to believe and have faith in God. It is the most powerful demonstration of the Divine Being that has ever crossed my path yet. I have always been a “Doubting Thomas” yet not intentionally, always wanting to get on the right track but never could, yet I believe your work when I learn more about it will help me to gain the one ambition of my life.
Now I am going to have your prescription filled and follow your instructions entirely. I suppose the druggist here can get all the ingredients.
Now for the questions, your first paragraph, second line “Under present conditions that surround this condition” what do you mean by this? Is it those that expect to become interested with me, or do you refer to financial tangles that I might be in, and who do you mean by “They” center of third line, same paragraph? In the last three lines of the same paragraph beginning with the word “none” do you mean in this sentence to be speaking of persons, or do you refer to fields that I have operated in, and fields that I expect to operate in? Why is 4:20 o’clock at the margin of center of this paragraph? Is it to specify the time of going of certain persons and the time of expectancy of others to arrive? If your interpretation of this is the same as mine, I have a very striking coincidence to relate to you that will make anyone believe in your work.
I am not able to interpret the two last paragraphs of the last question, so please interpret as you understand it so that I may get the right meaning.
Mr. Cayce, do you get from this reading that I am not the man to do this work, if I rid myself of the conditions that you speak of. Please enlighten me all you can by a personal interpretation of my whole reading as you see it, as it will enable me materially to understand and get the true meaning.
Thanking you in advance for a speedy reply, and with the kindest regards for you and your family, I am
Yours truly, [4906]

Mr. [4906] …, Okla.
My dear Mr. [4906]:-
I have yours of December 3rd, for which I thank you.
As I said in my letter, I gave you everything just as it happened, without any explanation on my part, but wanted you to know just how things were, and let you form your own opinion, without my making any comment. I thank you for your frankness and for the questions as you have asked, and I will try and answer them, giving you my interpretation of the portions of the reading that you asked about, as I see them. Please understand, however, these explanations, or interpretations, are from my normal mind, and I may not be correct. As I said, I wish it was possible, after having what we have gotten, and especially your letter of the 3rd, that I was able to sit down and have a heart-to-heart talk with you for an hour or so. I am sure we would do business together.
Now, as for the first: As I told you, if you remember correctly, it was only necessary to have the Conductor and the Stenographer present, but is was possible that my wife would be present at the reading. You told me that was satisfactory. Between the time you were here and the day of the reading, my wife had moved [from the hotel where the office is] out to the home. Consequently, was there, but I allowed no one else to be present, except Mr. Shroyer and the Stenographer, whom it was necessary to have, for, as you remember, Mr. Shroyer was acting in the capacity in each reading when you were here, and does act in the capacity for everyone. I would vouch for Mr. Shroyer as I would for myself. I hope this is satisfactory. It was certainly not the intention of doing anything other than that correct.
As for the second: In the asking for a physical diagnosis, we have found by experience that it is almost impracticable to get other questions asked of a secular nature unless a complete mental, spiritual and physical reading is taken. This, as I understood from you, was what you wished asked. That is, asked in such a manner that we would be able to obtain the information as was desired in that reading, and it was only possible to obtain such under the heading, or caption, of Mental, Spiritual and Physical.
Three: Yes, it was understood that the reading was to be written off immediately and mailed to you before anyone else saw it. This was done. While the reading was taken on Friday the 30th, it was not written off by the stenographer at that hour, for left immediately for home (she rooming at my home). Her note-book was with her, and of course no one could have read it or changed it anyway. The next morning this was transcribed, and put in [post] office for you. No one read it other than those who heard it when it was given, Mr. Shroyer, myself and the stenographer. Now, if these variations have been unsatisfactory to you, don’t hesitate in saying so. I have acted just as I would want to be acted toward by any honest, well-thinking man.
I am glad to know that, so far as you are able to check, (and you know better, I am sure, than anyone else) the physical diagnosis checked exactly, and, Mr. [4906]; the most gratifying thing to me, in everything you have said, is not that you believe in me, but that it has given you something of the Divine to believe in, and that it will help you find yourself and gain the greatest ambition of your life. Of that I am certainly proud. If it never means anything else, if it has in the least bit been the means of you finding yourself spiritually, I shall always praise God for it.
Now, as regards the other conditions. This is the way that I understand this: That you would not be the one to drill this well were you to keep the association of someone who had just left you (at 4:20 o’clock) or someone you were expecting in a very short time. Rid of those surroundings, it seems to me, you would be more satisfactory. Not only so far as the drilling of the well was concerned, but for your own personal good. Now, seemingly, to me, while it was not as definite as I would have liked to have had it, from my point of view, yet it made a point of view that you, personally, could very, very, definitely check. It seems that the men that were with you at the hour were correct. Those that had just left and that you were expecting for you to beware of. Now, I had no way, and have no way, of checking on any of this, but it is all certainly an open book to you, and my advice would be to act accordingly, using the dictates of your own conscience.
Now, I do not get from the reading that you are not the man to drill the well, or do this work, if you rid yourself of these conditions, but it brings on, of course, more talk about how well, or how, you are situated to rid yourself of those surroundings. Work that out just a bit yourself. Then write me.
I have some other people that are figuring on drilling this well, but this is the condition. They are not experienced men. If you rid yourself, or if you get yourself set, where you feel that you have complied with what was given in the reading, and want to figure with me and these men on that proposition of drilling that well, let’s get together and talk about it.
I thank you for your letter, and appreciate it more than I know how to tell you. Hope you will let me hear from you when you have considered these things well. Tell me frankly what you think about what I have said, and with kindest personal regards, I am, Sincerely, Edgar Cayce
R4. 12/12/23 Mr. [4906]‘s letter:
…, Oklahoma
Mr. Edgar Cayce, Dayton, Ohio
Dear Mr. Cayce:-
I am in receipt of your letter of December 6, and have studied same very carefully, and now for a little chat with you. I should have answered your letter before this, but have been very busy. Things in the oil country are looking very much better, and all the larger operators are feeling very optimistic about the coming year, and I have been able to complete two deals of which I am to drill two tests to the Wilcox sand. These test wells are on very close in acreage, and are very valuable from the producing standpoint. I am carrying controlling interest in both of these tests and have the off-sets to both these wells (that is the acreage lying next to the wells).
I have started in to follow the directions of your reading. You know that we were organizing a company and tried to promote same in New York, but failed, consequently on returning home and after receiving your reading I have decided to burst up the company and am having all the interest signed back to me personally, and at the same time I am dividing all of my holdings and equipment in another proposition or partnership that I have had in the past two years. My partner in this deal being very unreliable and very, very slippery, thus making all the business done through the partnership very unsatisfactory, this keeping me in hot water all the time because he would not stick up to his part of the contract. Mr. Cayce, I believe the company that I was starting to organize and the young man that were in it, and this partnership that I have had for the past two years is what is meant by the conditions that surround me in the reading. At any rate, I believe it strong enough that I am sure getting rid of all concerned. Now Mr. Cayce, can you imagine who it was that was leaving my home at 4:20 mentioned in the reading? It was Mr. [221] and wife, you having met him in Dayton, and he was to be one of the officials of the new company. This explains why I am assigning back all materials and all acreage to myself, and besides this I know I would be much better off by myself than to be in the partnership first above mentioned, and as for the young fellow that I was expecting at the hour that you gave my reading was an old room-mate of mine for five years when I first came to the oil country, and he was working on a salary and I was very successful in making money hand over fist and to say the least, I have spent thousands of dollars on him through friendship on trips that I would take him and pay all expenses. The morning of your reading I went to see this young fellow as I was overdrawn at the bank and wanted to borrow a thousand dollars from him for five days until some acreage that I had sold to one of the standard companies would paid through the bank to me. He said that he would be glad to let me have the money and showed me his balance at the bank and that he would be at my home between the hours of 2:30 and 4:00 o’clock and I could depend on him. Well sir, do you know he never showed up, or never called up over the ‘phone, and I have not heard a word from him to this day. What do you think of this? These two fellows is the striking coincidence that I mentioned in my first letter. On top of this, this young man drove continually my Cadillac roadster every Sunday to haul his girl around in and even had nerve enough to charge the gasoline to me. He always envied the way that I make money and of how fast I can deal when I want to. If these two “birds” ever get the chance to deal with one Buddy [4906] again, the granite they speak of at San Saba, Texas will be soft as soapstone.
[There followed a long paragraph re. his mother-in-law’s case. See favorable report typed into Case 4282-1 Reports.]
(Now, back to our own condition) Now Mr. Cayce, I have made up my mind that from this day on, I am eliminating myself from the entanglements of partnerships and company and play a lone hand in the oil business from now on. There is one question that I want to ask. You may think this is not the proper thing to do. I am starting six new wells in this country (in the hard or Mid-Continent Oil Fields), and am playing the hit-or-miss game. Now, would it be right for me to ask you to give me a reading on these wells and deals as I closed the propositions, taking into consideration the fact that I at all times am willing and desirous of carrying the Cayce Institute for an interest in each test free of cost to the Cayce Institute. Now I do not know enough about the power yet to know whether I should ask this question or not, but if I should not, do not hesitate in saying no. As I see it, I believe the only place in which the power will allow you to gain your fortune for the Institute is at San Saba, Texas. Please advise me on this question, and will you be kind enough to send me a copy of the reading in which this power told you to drill the Rocky Pasture, and also a copy of the reading that told you about the closing of the deal in the latter months of ‘23, and the deal starting on September 20, and going to the water and then return to Dayton. If this is not asking too much, it would satisfy me to a great extent, for my honest intention is to conduct myself in the future along the lines of your reading, especially the spiritual end of it, for it has been said before that a man gains nothing if he gains the whole world and loses his own soul.
Now Mr. Cayce, if it is not asking too much, will you please tell me who the men are that I will have to deal with when I come to close my deal for the San Saba well with you. Now I am positive that I am in a position to rid myself of any condition that might surround me because my reputation in the oil country has never been other than kindness and honesty, unless, that I became entangled in some partnership where the other party tried to crook me when my back was turned, then there would immediately begin to get so blue that it was not even healthy for any bystanders to be around, and I have been in a partnership like this for the past three years and I believe that it is responsible for what I lacked in my spiritual end of the reading. At any rate, I am cleaning up everything where there is an element of even a chance of any misunderstanding. I don’t know, there is some kind of a change came over me since I met you. I feel better, feel bigger and feel cleaner. As you know, I have been quite a drinking man in my past life. I can say this, that I have entirely lost the desire to take a drink. Everybody notices it. I was in an oil office day before yesterday, signed a contract when a bootlegger came in with a gallon of whiskey for one of the men for Christmas. They opened it, all took a drink, pushed the chairs back, and said “Now, Big Boy, get on it.” Well, you should have seen the expression on those fellow’s faces when I read the the “riot act” and stepped out without taking a drink and closed the door. I don’t know if they have all recovered from the shock yet or not. Now, can you tell me the cause of this? I never swore off, never made no promises, but I utterly hate the taste of whiskey and do not want it around me. It is something I can’t explain.
Now, I think this is long enough letter that we can entitle it the heart to heart talk that you mentioned in your last letter. I am having your prescription filled. The druggist is having a hard time to locate the gray ambergris and also the gin that is prepared form the Juniper berry. As I understand it, I am to be very exact in having this filled. This will be all for this time. Please answer at once, as I enjoy your letters very, very much.
With kindest regards to yourself and a remembrance to your family, I am
Sincerely yours, [4906]

[4906] …, Okla.
My dear Mr. [4906]:-
I have your letter of December 12th, also your wire of the 17th. I hardly know how to answer either one of these by letter. Wish that it was so that I could just sit down and talk to you about these. Your letter, Mr. [4906], certainly means a very great deal to me, and just such letters and just such conditions created or made in people’s lives are to me the acid test of the truth that may be in this work, yet I feel at the same time it places upon me a responsibility in gathering about me the correct ones to assist in this work that is beyond the minds of most of us to understand. I have made many mistakes, as every other man has. I have made many mistakes in having about me the different ones who were interested with me in this work. To my mind, as I told you I think one evening in your room while here, the gentleman whom I had given the handling of the business part of the work, was the first person to my mind that I had ever come in touch with that was not looking to the selfish end of the proposition first and foremost. Consequently, I had felt drawn to him in a way that I had to few people. I did not, nor did other people, question his business ability. It is perhaps that his line of work, and endeavors, have been such that the people just grasping at the class of work, supposedly to be accomplished through these readings, feel that it did not coincide. Hence it made a barrier that was hard to overcome, but I think from your wire you have gotten the wrong opinion of Mr. Lammers. Why, how, or whether it is to be that force that will destroy much of the good that you had contemplated might be accomplished between you and I or not, is yet to be seen, but until he would prove to me and to my work that he was not the man to handle the proposition I do not know how I could do otherwise than I have. I do not mean by this that there is to be an entanglement, neither is there to be others to deal with in the division that have proposed to be accrued from this work other than myself and the Institute. That has never as yet been the attitude that Mr. Lammers has taken, for all of it has been, all of his work, all of his endeavors, rather to further the work, and give people that were not able, or even that were able and did not for some reason or another see fit to contribute sufficient for me to carry on the work, he has been willing and ready whenever possible to assist in any way that he could, without arranging for remuneration for himself. Whether that you see deeper into this than I, and feel that there is something back behind it all or not, time I suppose will be the only thing that will prove just what is the right thing. I want to see you, have a chance at the drilling of that well. I understand from one of the men, or the partner of one of the men, who has been figuring with me on handling the property, that their chief financier is a native of Okmulgee. In all probability, this gentleman may be to see you in the next few days or weeks. They have had, I understand this morning, some people checking over property in San Saba. They report this morning that their findings are very good. Now, just what to say - Now of course you know my whole proposition is like this, Mr. [4906]. I want to do the right thing by everyone. The landowners have seen fit to have confidence in me. I haven’t any money. I haven’t anything to hold off on. I am lacking I know in business ability in dealing with business men. I have got to trust to the goodness of men. I may be gifted with the power of helping people when I am in an unconscious state. I try to live in accord with what I am trying to do, yet I know I fail, but to know that any man, and especially a man of your ability, feels that they have been helped by coming in touch with the work I am trying to do, makes me feel like that if it is possible you would be the man to do the actual work on the proposition anyway. I have two other people who are just as close as it is possible perhaps for friends to be. One of these men feels like that he owes his health, perhaps his life, to this work. The other is a thorough Christian gentleman, and they are working together trying to make arrangements to drill this property. Now, whether they are the ones, you, or the people I just referred to, whose associate is a native of Okmulgee, I cannot say. I can only leave it for the time being, and say that I will leave it with Him, and whichever is the correct thing He will guide, He will direct it, and the results will be that which is the best.
Now, as to your actions in regards to conditions about you, naturally I feel like, from the reading and from what you may in this letter, that you have done the right thing. You may surmise also that Mr. […] has written me relative to the reading, and now wants to know why the reading said that he was not the man to deal with you, and if he and his wife were the persons referred to in reading that were leaving the home at the hour. Now, of course, I do not want to make any hard feelings between friends. I cannot understand how I am supposed to know even who it was that was leaving, and we can only leave it to the reading. I have suggested to Mr. […] that perhaps this would come out in a horoscope reading for himself. As to whether it will or will not I do not know. Whatever is said of course that I have to abide by, as do others, for I have no way of knowing what I am going to say beforehand, nor what I have said until I see it written off. Yet, from your own letter, it seems, taking what has gone before and what was happening at the hour, it certainly has been most convincing to you that there is something beyond the understanding of the human mind, yet because that it is beyond it is certainly something not to be ignored, but to be dealt with in the correct way.
Of course, it is most pleasing to know that the diagnosis for the Mother-in-law was along the lines as all understood the case. I thank you for the enclosed, as you know, in giving my time and that of two others entirely to this work, such remembrances are good, for whatever that I am able to do, the daily needs have to be met. I do not want to become a burden to anyone, consequently to have the Institute backed by some foundation that has been the work’s making, and that had brought remuneration to everyone concerned, else I could have never been persuaded to have ever lent myself in the first place to attempt to tell anyone where to drill for oil. I have seen this tried in many various ways. I know there are things that are questionable that it might be used in and make a great deal of money in a small length of time, yet by the experiences at such times that it has been lent for such purposes the reaction in my daily life has been such that I know it is not worth the cost that it is in heart and mind and conscience to lend this work to such purposes. I have been persuaded, and have persuaded myself, though perhaps I am in error, or whether it is true or not still remains one of the not understood things in the work. I know that I have, or others have, oil properties that have proven correct. I have had old experienced men to tell me that they have checked up logs foot by foot, and that it had been worth while. All of these have been for other people, other people with moderate means, and without means, struggling, striving to get somewhere. None of these have seen fit so far to contribute anything to myself. I do not hold it against them, because if they should have they would have done so. It must lie on their own conscience. I do not think, however, that this is left entirely to the San Saba property, or that it would only work in that place, and I would be willing to try to be of assistance to you, let you make whatever assignment that you would see fit to the Institute, before or after, or however you would see fit, and see just what it would do. I will only ask this of you, and in which very, very, few others have ever done, though they have promised me beforehand that they would, to give me a written report of just what your findings were, if you drilled according to the information furnished on any special piece of land, and what your report was that I would abide by.
As to the personal influence this, seemingly, has brought into your life, of that I am proud, and, as I said in the first, just that seems to me to be worth while, for I feel as this way. Were it my own boy in question, in if it makes you find yourself, and it makes you feel cleaner, and bigger and better, then it is worth the whole world. I know it would be if it was my boy that someone else has brought such an influence into the life, and I feel that it has done this to you then it is worth the whole world, whether I have anything to eat tomorrow or not.
Now, whether I have been able to give you a correct understanding of myself, and of the conditions as I, in my normal state, see them or not, I do not know, but I hope you will try to see this just as I do, and if you do not understand it that you will take the time, when you have the time, to write me, and ask me, and let us get an understanding of each other, for I am sure that we will be worth much to each other if we will let ourselves be.
Hoping that you will write to me, and that I may have the pleasure of seeing you sometime in the near future, with kindest personal regards and best wishes, I beg to be
Yours sincerely, Edgar Cayce EC:GD
R7. 12/22/23 Mr. [4906]‘s letter:
Mr. Edgar Cayce, Dayton, Ohio
My dear Mr. Cayce:-
Your much expected letter came yesterday afternoon, and I intended answering it last night but could not find time to do so, but will settle down for a nice long chat this evening, as it is raining here and I do not feel like going to the office.
I was delighted with your letter and really enjoy the way you explain things but I do believe you misunderstand me. You seem to think that I have it in for Mr. Lammers and that I am too plain in my statements. Now Mr. Cayce, you know very well that I know very little about the arrangements that you have with any one that works in connection with you in your great work. And it is really none of my business to know. But I believe that every man has the privilege to pick the ones that he would like to become associated with. And the same thing that prompted me to want to deal with you, and no one else, even before I knew of your work, is the same thing that prompted me to answer your wire in the way that I did, and besides that, it prompts me not to stand in the way of any deal that you may be able to close, and at the same time it seems that we are to become very, very close friends, and out of that close connection you and I will reach the goal that we have been struggling for for many years, and I am perfectly satisfied with your statement that you would leave it to “HIM” to decide, for we both must remember that He never cheats and hands out to each man just what he deserves, and for myself, I am willing to accept his decision, and let the chips fall where they may. It matters not to me if I never go to San Saba, Texas, for if the meeting with you and the knowledge of your great work is the cause of me finding myself spiritually, then maybe I have received all the blessing that I should want. But, I will say this, that whatever the outcome may be should it fall our lot to drill this well on the Rocky Pasture, here in my estimation is what the Christian public will say of you and I, that you are (THE RICHEST POOR MAN IN THE WORLD) richest because of the good you have done in the world for mankind. And I (THE POOREST RICH MAN IN THE WORLD) poorest from the fact that I had given all my findings to aid you in your great work. You see the one-eight and seven-eights has nothing to do with the outcome of our deal, yet it must be that way to begin with for that is where the desire I have had to help my fellow man comes in, and if this desire is not really in my heart to do as I say, then HE will guide you that I am not the man to deal with. As I understand this that you and I, should we drill this well we must not take out any of the money other than a comfortable living for our families, and the rest to go to the completing and building and operating of your institute.
Yes, you are right time is the only thing that will tell you what to do, and it may be possible that I see deeper into this than you do, as I can only be guided by what I feel is right, and all I ask of you in making your decision as to my part to play in the San Saba deal is to remember that you are basing your decision on a reading that is divinely correct, knowing me and my inner self as the Master does. Now, has the other men fearlessly laid bare their lives spiritually, mentally and physically, if so, and their records are cleaner and better than mine, then give them the chance to do this work for they deserve it, and I will never whimper at all, for things lately seems very, very different to me.
You say, Mr. Cayce, that you are lacking in business ability. This is not so, I have met many big business men in my life, and have dealings with them, and it is astounding to know how little and narrow and undermining some of them turn out to be on LONG acquaintances, but with you it is entirely different, a cleaner and brighter mind I never saw, why do you let people tell you that. You know on every deal that comes up, you have your own idea, why don’t you follow it, it is the road to success.
Mr. Cayce, I want to learn more about this work, because it is a big help to me and the burden that I have carried for many years seems very, very much lighter. I really enjoyed taking my family to Sunday School and Church last Sunday, and, believe me, we are going every Sunday from now on. I have always contributed to the church freely but would never go myself. Everyone wanted to know what had happened to me, well - I just let them guess at that.
I noted carefully what you said about helping me on my wells here, and I am perfectly willing to give you one-eight carried free into the tanks in each test that you locate for me. This means that you would have one-eight of the gross proceeds of each test for yourself or institute, and would have no bills to pay at all, and if this is the right thing to do, I can build for you the finest institute in America in less than five years for you see my plans are laid to drill during the year of 1924 at least twenty five new wells on new leases scattered over the Mid-Continent field. Now Mr. Cayce, I would not enter into an iron-clad agreement with you to do this unless you will take a reading for yourself and ask if it is the right thing for us to do, and if the reading says that it is the proper thing to do, upon the receipt of this reading, I will have my attorneys draft a contract with you protecting you for your agreed upon one-eight in every test that you have directly or indirectly predicted on as to the outcome, and I will further say that I will carry out your instructions fully in regard to the written statement of just what the findings were in each of these test wells.
Now Mr. Cayce, please find out at once if this is the proper thing to do. If so, wire me, for I am now waiting to sign the contract on two more pieces of land, but do not want to sign up until I hear from you. I will want you to pass on these properties before I sign the contract. Of course I have two under headway now, and I will want you to pass on them also as soon as you find out that it is proper to do so.
I will not write more this time, but want to thank you for your nice letters and for the big help that you have been to me. Expecting to hear from you at your earliest possible moment. With kindest regards to all,
Hurriedly [4906]
P.S. I finally got my prescription filled, was very careful to get all ingredients just as the reading called for and started taking as directed on December 20.

Mr. [4906] …, Okla.
My dear Mr. [4906]:-
Yours of the 22nd at hand, and while I wired you relative to the reading, this is the first opportunity I have had of writing you to mail a copy of the reading. As I wired, I believe this will be most satisfactory, but I want you to judge from the reading yourself, as you will know better by the consideration of conditions that have been and are present at hand [See 254-3, 12/28/23 re [4906]].
It is certainly wonderful the letters that you write, and I enjoy them more than I know how to tell you. I only wish that it were possible for us to be more closely associated, that we might have more of the personal contact. I believe it would be better for both. However, time will be the factor that, should we be thrown together, will tell whether it is for the weal or woe.
I thank you for your words relative to my business ability. However, I know my own failures perhaps as well as the next one, and know that I am too easily influenced by everyone that comes along that I feel drawn to in any way. Hence, the usual outcome is that I am stripped dry by the time the other person has gotten either set or what he started in for and has found that I could not be used as far as had anticipated, or that the forces do not allow it to be carried into the channels as some have desired, yet I know that each and every instance has been building and preparing me for the things that come from day to day. We all say experience is a dear teacher, yet, be we the wise or the foolish, we really do not learn by any other than that dear school. I know from my own self I have tried to live the life that to do unto the other as I would like to be done by. Not that I am cleaner or better than the other man, for “He that would be greatest among you must be the servant of all.” I have made this as my one resolution for not only the year 1924, but for the rest of my life, as far as within my power. I will be my own judge of those conditions that have to do with my welfare and that of those nearest and dearest to me, forgetting not that I must serve the more would I give of the better self to the assistance of others.
It is certainly most pleasing to know that you are taking up your Sunday School and Church activities, for say what we will or may there is nothing that keeps a man as close to the right things, and the best things of life, as some consecrated service to the Master, and the Church is the physical manifestation of His work in the world. Not that we don’t often find better people in many respects, and people perhaps fairer in their daily dealings, or as it may seem, yet this illustration I am sure gives one a clear vision of the condition of the Church man and that man on the outside. No matter how beautiful or magnificent a car you may build, unless it has that connection that makes it a goer and a doer of things it compares very little to the one, no matter how ramshackle, that has the arm that may be put out and cut in to the force that gives it a real driving power behind it. Just so with the man that is within, or is trying to do his very best. Though he may be beset with all the cares of the world, though he may find hypocrisy, lying, and all manner of deceit within, it must be the individual action after all that tells whether the inner spirit bears witness with His spirit, as to whether one is in the direct way or not. So, as I said in the beginning, it is certainly most gratifying, and if I have done nothing else, if I have accomplished this in the year 1923, of being of the least assistance in helping [4906] find himself I thank God for the privilege of being of a little assistance, and feel that I have done something worth while.
Now, as for the assignment, as you suggest for the readings, I will leave it entirely in your hands, and whatever you may see fit to assign to me for any assistance that I may attempt to give, I will thank you. I will be glad to undertake whatever you desire, so long as it is in keeping with those suggestions as are made in the reading herewith enclosed. I feel that you do not want to be otherwise. Hence, I also feel and know you will not ask other than that as is deemed wise to ask, so you can prepare them in the manner that you see fit, and just as soon as possible they will be attended to.
Have had several people with me of late on various propositions, especially those relative to the Institute work, and I am in hopes that it will soon materialize some of the dreams and hopes that I have had for a long, long time.
I am in hopes to be able to write you again real soon, and that I may have a personal talk with you. May be barely possible that within a month or six weeks I would be in the West on a little trip. If I may, I will certainly attempt to come by and see you for a while, or should you be in the East, of course you will stop by Dayton.
Hope that you will let me hear from you.
Thanking you again for your wonderful letters, with kindest regards to you and yours, with Best wishes for a Happy and Prosperous New Year, I am
Sincerely yours, Edgar Cayce
