This Psychic Reading given by Edgar Cayce at Phillips Hotel, Room 115, Dayton, Ohio, this 6th day of May, 1924, in accordance with request made by Mr. [4906].

Section 7, Township 14 Time of Reading North, Range 14 East, 4:30 P. M. Morris, Oklahoma.

1. LS: Now, you have before you the oil well which is being drilled in Section 7, Township 14 North, Range 14 East, located directly North of the town of Morris, Oklahoma, Okmulgee County. You will answer all questions which I might ask you relative to this well.

2. EC: Ready for questions.

3. (Q) At what depth should the 5 inch casing be set to shut off water at 2908? (A) 2913, the first solid structure we have below the water line; drilling from here we will find we will encounter the oil sand, and this will be in the 2980 depth. Drilling into this sand 6 to 8 feet when gas will be very strong. The production from this will produce 3 to 32 hundred (3,000 to 3,200) barrels per twenty-four hours.

4. (Q) Will this be a long life sand? (A) Fairly long life sand, yes. This is below the other depths where water stratas have interfered in the sands above. In the sands above this we have two, you see. These, as we have given, interfered with by water that has come in from other districts. Holes were not handled properly.

5. (Q) Will this property be attached when well is finished. (A) No. After the pipe line connections are made trouble may be expected, but this may be helped by the other developments that will be handled in same districts.

R1. 12/28/24 (Sunday) Mr. [4906]‘s letter to EC:

Mr. Edgar Cayce Dayton, Ohio

Dear Cayce! I am just wondering what has become of you and whether you are in Dayton yet or not. I suppose you think I died early this year or fell in one of these holes that I am drilling and was unable to get out, but Cayce this is not so. I was so disappointed in the outcome of the two wells that I drilled on your recommendation here north of the town of Morris that I did not know what to do. I carried the well in 7-14-14 to a depth of 2988 feet and quit with a hole full of salt water, this hole being very expensive having to pull the casing two different times and ream the hole out larger and put casing back in in order to shut water off from the Wilcox and Turkey Mountain Sands - the well in 8-14-14. I drilled to a depth of 2496 the Wilcox sand and got a hole full of water so I did not drill it any deeper for it was only 1/2 mile from the well in 7-14-14 and no one would contribute or help it in any way. After the well in 7-14-14 had water in two sands lower than the Wilcox, before drilling deeper I obtained the 1/2 royalty in the 160 acre tract on which the well in 7-14-14 was located from the land owner as a part consideration for drilling deeper. I have never put this of record yet and if you think there is oil there yet I will gladly give it to you.

The well at Maude, Okla., is standing just where it was the last report I made to you. The fellows I moved in there for went broke and another man by the name of McClintock took it over, and it has been so dull in the oil business that he has had no luck in promoting it so far. So my tools are still at the location. He may be able to go ahead with it in the Spring - well after having no luck on the two wells you recommended I decided to try my own judgement and I have drilled three other - all deep hole owning the wells my self and all were dry holes not a show of oil. So you can see that this year has been a blank for me.

Well Cayce what have you made up your mind to think about this do you still think you can locate oil and do you think your prediction on the San Sabby well would be any good write me a long letter, tell me what you think about this, and also how you are coming along with the other end of your work.

I am starting two new wells one in Kansas one in Okla both are good Geological structures, on big blocks of acreage. I can not make up my mind to ask you in regard to a report on them, for did it ever occur to you, that it might not be the right thing to do. I’ll expect to hear from you in the near future.

This year being a total loss to us we did not have a very large Xmas but had plenty for the Kiddies. Hoping that you and your family had a merry and Happy Xmas and that the coming year will bring you many pleasant surprises.

R2. 1/2/25 EC’s letter:

My dear Mr. [4906]:-

I was indeed glad to have your letter of the 28th, and to hear from you again. We had been talking about you for several days just preceding this, and we had determined to write you a letter, see if we could hear from you, and to find out how things were going with you.

I’m certainly sorry to know of the bad luck that you had with the two wells that you were drilling in accordance with information which I had given. I have no way to explain the outcome of these. I can only accept it as being one of the failures in work of this kind, and try to study conditions surrounding same and see if I can determine any cause, or whether there WAS a cause or not. As yet, I have reached no definite decision. It perhaps may be as you suggest, not intended that such information should be used in such work, for I DO know that there have been hundreds and hundreds of people that have been helped in PHYSICAL readings that have been given since that time. This may be another one of the conditions in which I should not delve at all. I’m sure this has been very disappointing to you, from the impression that you had gained from conversation with myself, and from the letters that I had shown you, and perhaps from some word that Dave Kahn also told you. I DO know that such things HAVE succeeded. Why, when all was intended with such good intent and purpose, that those should fail, I do not understand, and as yet I am not sufficiently able, in a financial way, to delve into the matter to determine as to whether we could find the cause or not. However, there is at the present time another well [See [4905] series] being drilled according to information furnished through such readings. This, as yet, has not been completed. Should be perhaps in the next two or three weeks. I shall be glad at that time, if you so desire, to furnish you with all of the information connected with this well, and the outcome of same, whether it be good or bad. Then, should you consider that you would like to have, irrespective of whether you followed it directly or indirectly, readings on the wells you are about to drill, I shall be glad to undertake them for you and let you use them as you see fit, and should they be worth anything to you, determine in your own mind as to how much. As for the San Saba proposition [See [3777] and [5628] series], it is still held in about the same condition as it was a year ago. I would not desire anyone, under the circumstance, to undertake the proposition there, until we see the outcome of this present well being drilled.

As for myself, and what I have been doing, as you may well surmise, the gentleman whom I came here with, and with whom I was associated when you were here, has long since faded out of the picture, and I have of necessity had to go on my own hook, which, under the existing circumstances, has not been an easy job, for it has been even worse then from elbow to mouth. During the year, I have made two or three trips. These have been more or less successful, and at the present time I have a group of men interested in establishing the Institute much along the lines as I tried to outline to you when I was talking to you here, and I expect to go to see these people about the 11th or 12th. Perhaps will spend a week or ten days with them. What is to be the outcome, I do not know. We still have a great many requests for physical readings, and all of these come from friends of people who have been assisted. I’m sorry to say, we have had very few from Oklahoma, following the readings that we gave there. Of course, I know there’s some reason for it. Just what, I can only reason it with three things I have at least learned in the last twelve months. Namely: For anyone to receive any good from the readings, physically of course I’m speaking of, first they must desire in their own soul assistance. Second, they must believe in what is given, at least sufficiently to carry out to the letter the suggestions made. Third, they must believe that God is able, through their physical bodies, to give them that which they desire. Without these three, I don’t believe anyone will get any good. That’s my experience in the last twelve months.

Now, I’m sorry, Mr. [4906], this proposition has been an expensive one to you. I’m sure you have thought of it in many different ways, especially when you found that the operations, under your own geologist, or suggestions from self, proved no different from those on which I tried to give information. It perhaps has made you feel like that everything was guess work. However, I am in hopes that it will not interfere with our friendship, and I’m in hopes that yet I may be able to help in some manner or way, in which it will give you something definite, something tangible, for you to base your opinion of the work on.

I trust, then, that I may hear from you from time to time. I’m glad to say that our family has been fairly well throughout the year. I’ve had one or two right bad spells myself, but I’m feeling very good at present - physically. Am glad to know that you and yours have kept well, and that you had a very pleasant Christmas, for the little folks at least.

My Dear Cayce: No doubt you will be surprised to hear from me, especially from out in this country. I am out here now finishing up, that is plugging a dry hole that we have finished 31 miles North East of Garden City Kansas.

Cayce I will be done here in about 10 days and I am planning on going to Texas to look around, to the town of ABILENE and MORAN in Shackelford Co. I understand there is a shallow pool there and they are getting nice wells, and I notice from the map that our old town of San Saba is not far from there, and if you have no objections I will go over and look the Rocky Pasture over.

You know I have drilled continually since I met you in Oklahoma, excepting this well, and have had no luck so I believe I will change states maybe that will help.

Do not think that I am going to Texas to interfere or infringe on your San Saba leases, for I am not, but if you have not made a deal with some one else and still think I am a square shooter, you may write me immediately the descriptions of the Rocky Pasture and where its location was to be, and I will not mention you at all while there, and then I’ll come to Dayton to see you if the land & the looks of the county suits me.

I am wondering just how you are getting along with your Institute, and I hope that you are succeeding beyond your own expectations. I myself have been very unfortunate in the Oil Business. Maybe it not my time yet, at any rate I would enjoy a nice long letter, letting me know, what you think of me inspecting the San Saba Deal [See [3777] and [5628] series]. My dear Mr. [4906]:

Certainly was very much pleased to have yours of the 2nd. Sorry to know though that you have been having such hard luck and getting dusters all the way around, but I certainly would be very glad if you’d go down in Texas, for you to go over and look over the Rocky Pasture, and I’d be very glad for you to tell the owner (I wouldn’t care for it to be general knowledge), Mrs. Julia Moore, that I had asked you to come look it over and make her a proposition. I think it would really be worth something to you for her to know that I had suggested the proposition to you. However, you may feel your way out in that respect, if you had rather, and use your own judgement regarding same. I shall be very glad to give you any information that is possible concerning any of the territory around there. I can furnish you a log of the well that was drilled in Rocky, the one adjoining there, and the one about three miles below. My idea of the location, though, as I said, I’d be very glad to give you the very definite spot when you go to make it, the location that Udden Bosai and the one I gave, without knowing anything of the country or these peoples’ report, are practically the same, and is about thirty yards nearly North of the junction of Little Rock and Rocky. These are branches in Rocky Pasture.

I assure you I shall be glad to cooperate with you in any way that it is possible, irrespective of whether that you were giving me an interest or not.

R5. 9/27/25 (Sunday morning) Mr. [4906]‘s letter:

Mr. Edgar Cayce Dayton, Ohio

Dear Cayce I was very glad to get your letter and since that time I have made a trip to Lexington Ky after my family who were spending the Summer with my father, and on our return we came to Texas that is the shallow fields around Albany, Sedwick, and Moran, Putman, Cisco, Crossplains, Cross-cut, and Burkett pools, and I was very much impressed with that country.

I noticed that San Saba is only about 125 miles south of the area that I visited and if I had not been hurried for time, I would have gone to San Saba - but as I have made all arrangements to move to Texas I will get over there as soon as I can after getting moved. I believe that the opportunities are much better there, than in Oklahoma as this here is so nearly drilled up.

Cayce where does Mrs. Julia Moore live? in San Saba or out on the ranch, and would you send me the records of the wells that have been drilled near there and also the report of Mr. Udden Bosai as I want to check all the information against the report of my geologist Mr. John Herald of Tulsa, and I expect to drill this well if I can get a good report signed by Herald. Cayce also send me your idea of what depth I will have to go, and how much pipe I will have to use, and what sizes and how much of each size, and whether I will have to underream any or not, as I have a very large 30 Special Star Machine, and have an Extra arrangement on it that I can handle as much pipe as a standard rig, and if I do not have to underream I could use this machine if it not over 2750 ft very nicely and could do the work much cheaper.

Cayce ole man, I am sure want to make this deal, and I want to say right here, no matter how the deal is made, you will have all the interest you desire, of course I can not tell you definitely until I have worked that country and see if I want the lease and also see if I can get it from Mrs. Julia Moore. Something tell[s] me continually that I am making the right move in going to Texas - I hope so. Now Cayce please send me all this data as soon as you can, as I want to make arrangements with Mr. Herald to work this lease (?) and make a geological report on it.

R6. 10/3/25 EC’s letter:

35th Street, Virginia Beach, Va.

My dear Mr. [4906]:-

Yours of the 27th was forwarded me here. As you will see from this, we have moved the base of our operations from Dayton, Ohio to Virginia Beach, Virginia. While we have gotten away this far from all the workings in Texas and that part of the world, we are in hopes and believe we have made the right move for our Research Work. We have hardly gotten straightened out as yet. I’m sorry I can’t send you those reports and papers in this mail, but I will get these up just as soon as possible, so you will please let me know by return mail where to mail these. I am writing at once, so that I won’t miss you at Okmulgee.

I am enclosing you clipping from some Texas paper, Lometa I think it is, that may be interesting to you. This man, Bridges, has perhaps done more extensive work in San Saba and surrounding country than any one geologist that has been in there, and there are some blocks of acreage just South of where I want to drill that he has been holding for quite a number of years. Udden and Bosai both made reports on the territory and I’m pretty sure I have Bosai’s report on Rocky. That I will send you as soon as I can get to these papers, with the information about the two wells as were drilled. I am of the opinion that you would get production at very close to 2600 feet. There would be about seven or eight hundred feet of ten inch casing, about 1400 feet of eight inch casing. Then I’m sure you would not have more than one other, IF THAT, strata of water. It might be possible that you would get a small well in the lower bend, which would be at something like eleven fifty to thirteen hundred feet, but I am of the opinion that you would get the large production in the hickory sand, which is reached by passing through (in this district) what is known there as Ellenberger by Udden. In fact, anything in that district, whether you rake it up off the top of the ground, or where you get it, Udden calls it Ellenberger - but you pass through the Ellenberger around sixteen and thirteen hundred feet, in Rocky. Now this is for your own personal information. The reports as were given on our well, I think, show that we quit drilling in Ellenberger, or had reached granite at about eighteen hundred feet, but I could eat all the granite that was in it, except that which was put in by some fellows that jipped the well - but I’ll send you these reports and then you can see for yourself.

Mrs. Moore does not live in San Saba nor on the ranch, but about two miles and a half, or three miles, out South of San Saba. Of course, anyone there can tell you just where she lives, and it may be possible that she has moved since I was there.

Be sure and let me have your address by return mail, that I may send all of these papers to you. I certainly am in hopes that you’re making the right move and I can’t help but believe that if you drill that hole in Rocky that you’ll get one of the biggest, if not THE biggest well that has ever been brought in, in Texas. I certainly thank you for your interest and for your big faith towards myself. I assure you I only want to do the right and proper thing at any and all times - but surely appreciate any favor that you may show me. With kindest personal regards from all to you and yours,

My Dear Cayce,

I know you are wondering what has happened to me but on receiving your letter I was packing and storing my furniture and loading a car of tools which I shipped to Putnam Texas, and was expecting to get away from Okmulgee in the next two or three days after your letter came. So I did not send you my address for I did not know where it would be. I unloaded my tools at Putnam Texas 16 miles west of this town of Cisco. I am told it is less than 100 miles to San Saba. I will wait to go there until I hear from you. So as I will have all the dope when I go.

Cayce, I am associated with one of Oklahoma’s biggest men, and have the finances all arranged for to drill 10 were on different tracts of land here in Texas, and I am satisfied I can get this well drilled without any trouble.

I’m writing this hurriedly and a man is waiting for me to go to Moran with him to look at a lease that he has. This pen is a fright so excuse the looks of this letter.

My partner & his geologist will be here this coming week and I want to take the geologist over Rock Pasture so you rush me the dope and please describe the location in your letter so as I can find the exact spot. I want to see how close our geologist comes to making the same location.

Rush this “Old Man” for I may be the Boy, that is intended to put you on your feet.

Just as soon as I check up on this lease, then I’ll make you a proposition, and I am sure you will be more than satisfied with it.

Trusting that I will get an answer from you by next Wednesday for my men will be here and I must not miss having them go over it. I am keeping quiet about the information that you gave me, and my men must work with only the knowledge of geology as they would do elsewhere. If I drill this well no man connected with the work will ever know any thing about what your prediction on it has been, for my policy would be to let no one know, then nothing will happen to the hole.

R8. 11/3/25 EC’s letter:

Dear Mr. [4906]:-

Was certainly very glad to have yours of the 31st. Was sorry indeed that I didn’t have these papers so I could send them to you in the first letter, for I realize these cannot possibly reach you TOMORROW, as they will only leave here on that day - but I just received yours this afternoon. I’ve had these on my desk for some little time. I believe they cover practically all the information that I could give you, except that which [will be?] of a verbal nature. I’m [certainly?] glad to know that you have gotten connected up right. I believe you’re going in some wonderful territory, as I think more of it than any I know. Now there is a great deal of Texas, from Archer County to the Rio Grande River, that I believe I have some first hand information about, so wherever you do decide to operate in Texas, whether its anywhere within two hundred miles of anything I have anything to do with or not, I shall be glad to give you the information that I may have regarding same, and PLEASE UNDERSTAND I don’t expect pay for same, for I want to see you make a success! I think you deserve it - you’re the right sort of a man to have it, and I’ll be more than glad to give it to you - so wherever you do decide, should I have anything on it, it will certainly be yours for the asking.

Now the papers that I am sending you [[3777] series], as you will see, many of them are the original copies. They’re the last ones that I have in my possession. I haven’t made copies of these and I would like to ask that you preserve these and when you are through with them, whether you use them or not, I’d be glad if you’d return them to me. However, they’re yours to use as you see fit, for I believe in you, and here’s hoping you are on the right track! As for the location in Rocky, it is about a hundred yards form the junction of Little Rocky and Big Rocky. That’s two big gullies that run through Rocky Pasture. That is, a hundred yards from this junction toward the Goldthweight and San Saba Road, which, if I remember directions correctly, is a little bit East of North from this junction. I think I told you about how to get in touch with Mrs. Moore. She lives South from San Saba on a little farm about two miles and a half. I certainly will be glad to know what your geologist has to report.

I’m in hopes that these reach you in good time and you know I hope that you’ll drill this well. Be sure and let me hear from you every opportunity you have.

R10. 2/2/26 Mr. [4906]‘s letter:

My Dear Cayce. I’ll bet you are wondering this moment, what has become of me, and whether I am ever going to write you or not. Well “old man” I have been stepping on “through the Rye” here in Callahan County. I have added TWO more dry holes to my long list and am starting another one this week. It seems that dry holes have a kind of nourishment in them, or at least I seem to thrive on them.

Cayce I returned from San Saba last night, it being my second trip to see Mrs. Moore, and I am glad to say that I have in my pocket this moment a new five year commercial lease on the Rocky Pasture and also Mr. Leverett’s lease of 1000 acres adjoining Mrs. Moore’s property, and about 4000 more acres that Mr. Boller the lawyer is getting signed up for me as I could not remain long enough to secure them myself.

I am very much impressed with Mrs. Julia Moore. She sure is an excellent Christian character, and a most lovable old lady. I took my wife and kids down with me and they enjoyed every moment of this stay.

Cayce I have made up my mind that I am going to drill that well, something tells me that its my way to success, that is, it means help for the poor and needy, for that’s what my part will go for. All I want out of it is to pay this debt of $150,000 that hangs on my head, and here is what I want to do for you, if your prediction is true, as I believe it is. I am willing to drill that well on this basis, I to own all the leases I will finance the well, and will take out the exact amount of my indebtedness and interest, and then you to have 1/2 of all that I have, the well and all the acreage that remains. I want to drill this well without selling an interest or selling any of the acreage, and I feel that I will be able to do that, for I am praying for the well I am starting in Callahan County to come in good enough, that it will bring me enough to drill the Rocky Pasture.

Something tell me I’ll get this hole down Cayce and that you will yet realize all you ever expected out of it, for your work or institution.

Cayce, I am unable to interest my Oklahoma partner in the deal at all so am going to fight it out by myself, and I want you to do this for me I suppose you can. You take a reading and get a geological report in detail on that block of acreage telling the thing in full as Dr. Emil Boese does in his, and sign it Dr. Edgar Cayce - wouldn’t it be fine to have a report written by you before the well was started when the well come in. It would prove to all the world your power.

Say write Mrs. Moore a letter. She would like to hear from you.

I am keeping Boese report and the record but am returning the rest of the papers.

My agreement on the Rocky Pasture is to be actually drilling on or before Aug 1, 1926 with all the tools rig and material on the ground. Let me know Cayce if you are satisfied with my proposition on drilling the well and if you are not we will try to change it to your liking, it is only as it seems to me to be the fair way.

Let me hear from you, write to Mrs. Moore and don’t forget the report.

R11. 2/11/26 EC’s letter to [4906]:

My dear Mr. [4906]

I was somewhat surprised, but certainly very glad, to have yours of the 2nd. I felt that you had been very busy, and I know when a man has that kind of business to attend to, he hasn’t much time for letter writing. I certainly am glad to know though that you are going to drill a well in Rocky Pasture. I am sure that you found Mother Moore one of the loveliest souls that you nearly ever met. She’s one of the old, old timers.

I’m sorry to know that you have had to add two more holes (dry) to your list, but I’m feeling mighty confident of the results in San Saba, provided you shut your eyes and go straight on down to twenty-six hundred feet. As you can very well see from the log, there are many geologists, especially Dr. Udden, that will tell you that you will strike Ellenberger around twelve to thirteen hundred feet, but I know, by experience, you will go through this in less than three hundred feet. I know it’s there, because I’ve SEEN it. I know the oil is there, because I’ve seen that. It certainly was funny though - about two days before I received your letter, I DREAMED I was in Rocky Pasture and saw a well come in.

Yes, I’ll be very glad to write to Mrs. Moore, and will do so in this mail.

As far as your offer and suggestion as to what you will do in regards to your work there, I think that is fine, and I don’t know how anyone could ask anymore of a fellow. I shall be very glad to make a reading on the territory and send it to you. I could NOT sign it as doctor or geologist. I think, however, there are a great many things that I can be of help to you in, regarding Rocky Pasture especially. I’m sure you note that it has already been surveyed, blocked off, and has been made a matter of record. It will be very easy then to determine whatever block you may decide to place the well on, and will not be hard nor expensive to get the lay of same. Bross is still, I believe, the County Engineer. You will find him a peculiar man, but certainly one whose acquaintance you would desire to cultivate after you know him, and he was very close to Dr. Boese when he made his study of that whole territory, spent several weeks with him, right out on the ground, ALL THE TIME.

Now, you know I kind of feel like that I’m starting in the fight again, to know you’re down there on the job, and I’ll want to be of every possible help in the world to you, and don’t hesitate to call on me at any time, and anything I can possibly do, I will do! I’ll get you that report just the first chance possible. It might be a week or ten days before I have an opportunity, as we’re keeping pretty busy, but I’ll get it.

Let me hear from you whenever you find the time. I believe you’re going to be one of the richest men there ever was in the oil business now. I know you’re going to open the biggest field that’s ever been opened in Texas.

Dear Cayce. Well I am in Cisco today and have a little time, so will write you a letter. It has been very cold here. Snowing and freezing up the cars, so we shut down the well and came in home until the weather get warmer.

Cayce what is the matter? that I have not heard from you. Your last letter stated that you would get me the report on my San Saba acreage, in the near future. I would like to have it very much. I am planning to go to San Saba about April 10th to get the other leases signed up that makes my block complete.

I am seven hundred now on the well that I shut down, with no show, my contract is to go 800 ft and we are to drill five wells on this lease. Our lease contains 1085 acres on Section 3 + 4 on the Synder Ranch North East of the town of Baird Texas about 8 miles in Callihan County Texas. I do hope this is good for I have been thinking of late that it would be so much better if no one would be interested in that (San Saba) lease but you and myself. I can get partners in the deal, but so often they turn out crooked, and botch up the deal so that why I want to make enough money on some deal so as I can go it lone handed at San Saba, then I know I’ll get what I am drilling for. Will you see if this acreage is any good north of Baird or not. If it isn’t I’ll drop it and get another shallow deal where I can sell it for a few thousand, then I can drill the San Saba well alone. Let me hear from you at once please.
