This Psychic Reading given by Edgar Cayce at his office, 115 West 35th Street, Virginia Beach, Va., this 16th day of April, 1926, in accordance with request made by Mr. [4906].

Time of Reading 11:50 A. M. Eastern Standard Time. San Saba Co., Texas.

1. GC: You will have before you lands in San Saba County, Texas, especially that known as Rocky Pasture, about ten to twelve miles northeast of San Saba, San Saba County, owned by Mrs. Julia A. Moore. You will give the geological lay of Rocky Pasture and vicinity, with reference to the prospects of locating oil. You will make specific location in Rocky Pasture for the drilling of such a well.

2. EC: [In undertone] “They’re expecting her to die now.” Yes, we have these lands. We have had these here before. [[3777] series?]

3. Now, in respect to the prospect of oil in this vicinity, and the lay or the geological outlook in this vicinity, we find these conditions exist:

In the Llano uplift, thirty to thirty-five (30 to 35) miles below (South) from this location, we find this land, Rocky Pasture and vicinity, the greater portion of same, is overlaid with the Pennsylvania sand and underlaid with the Two Bend Formations. Little of the cretaceous shows in this vicinity, but to the east there may be seen the outcropping of same, especially on the San Saba Knobs. The formations are such in this vicinity that we find the general lime lays in the angle of north and northwest, and is at near the ninety-four (94) degree, and that there are at least three distinct anticlines that pass through this portion and vicinity of Rocky Pasture. Also, to the south and west there is a cross anticline, forming directly in the farther north that anticline on which Sipe Springs and Erath fields are located.

5. As to the prospect of oil in this vicinity, we find these conditions then exist, with these GENERAL outlooks from the surface formation:

There are many sand beds, two to three out-croppings, in Rocky Pasture; of the red beds two to three out-croppings, especially in the Colorado and San Saba Rivers, one lying almost due east or forming the boundary of Rocky Pasture, there is an out-cropping of the bend lime. There is also in the San Saba, to the south and west, an outcropping of the bend lime, as is seen, twenty to twenty-two (20 to 22) miles below this the full outcropping of the bend lime, in its natural or original state.

Now we find in the vicinity of Rocky Pasture, lying between this anticline that passes to the east of same, through portion of the adjoining counties, and that on the west in the adjoining counties, where this bend formation and where this cross anticline, on which these northern fields are located, that there is produced in the vicinity of the Rocky Pasture that trap, which may be really called the Mother Pool, or that which has been and is the accumulation of ages, produced by this uplift lying south of this country and vicinity, see? for, as we see, to give the conditions as exist, and as existed in ages past, twice this vicinity has been inundated by the sea. When this uplift was the highest point in this great mountain range, extending all across from the Sierra Cordilleras to that of the White Mountains in New Hampshire. We find this condition was as the backbone, or the ridge, through this whole portion of the continent, and we will find, by drawing a line from that near Monterey in Mexico, on the eastern edge of Cordilleras, to that of near Concord, New Hampshire, that the greater part of the oil fields in the United States are located along the edges, either north or south of this line, as might be drawn. There will also be seen that this edge of San Saba County lies within this range. In the second inundation brought the first and second oil pools and sedimentary conditions to this portion of the uplift, and UNDER THIS FORMATION, which is known as NOT a sedimentary, may the oil be located, in that which may be known as the hickory sands, which will be found to be located in the Rocky Pasture at the GENERAL depth of twenty-four hundred to three thousand (2000 to 3000) feet from the surface.

8. In the location then of those for oil in this vicinity, we will find in this a specific manner. There is seen there passes through this tract of land known as Rocky Pasture a gulch, or a gulley, or a creek known as Little and Big Rocky. These join to-gether on the western side of this tract, in the north and western side, about fifty yards from the line of the Murray property, see? In going almost due north from this gulch, thirty paces, we find there a flat or mesa land. That is the place to DRILL for oil, in this portion of Rocky Pasture. There will also be found, near the southwest end, where the out-cropping shows a portion of the red bed, and of the enormous lime rock, this would prove a place to drill also. THIS we would find some deeper than that as located near the gulch of Little and Big Rocky Creek, see?

9. In the drilling we will find and encounter these conditions, for, as we find, there has been drilled, about a thousand and thirty yards, almost east, a little north by east, from this location, a well, to the depth of sixteen hundred (1600) feet. This is at the present time showing indications in the base of this, or where it was drilled to, of the seepage of oil and some gas, as may be seen by the water that may be drawn off from same at the present time.

10. As to the formations to be encountered, we find then as this:

Through the first eighty (80) feet we will find sand, gravel, sandstone, gravel, lighter shale, and in the loose shale, and just before reaching the sand, at a hundred and twenty to twenty-five (120 to 25) feet, the water will be encountered. This MAY be used for the drilling purpose, or for supplying water for such drilling purposes, for at the one thirty-two to thirty-five (132 to 35) the larger casing may be set, and the water drawn off or used from such. Then we will find we will encounter some black or gray lime, going through this into sand and shale again, until we reach near the depth of nine hundred and sixty-nine feet (969), where we will encounter another heavy lime. There casing should be set again to cut off the water appearing at the three to five hundred (300 to 500) feet level. Then we will encounter the gray lime, with some showing of an oil shale and…[Steno didn’t get the preceding 2 lines.]…around the one thousand to eleven hundred (1000 to 1100) feet, and through this some two to three hundred (200 to 300) feet, near the fifteen hundred showing (1500), we will encounter some water again.

12. Then, setting casing around the sixteen to seventeen to eighteen hundred (16 to 17 to 1800) feet, we will then encounter that sand known as White Mountain, or Cap Mountain, or Green Mountain, and through this encounter the oil shale, and entering the oil bearing sands at near the twenty-six hundred (2600) feet, and we will find a very, very, large production, bringing near to forty, to sixty, to seventy thousand (40 to 60 to 70,000) BARRELS of crude oil, at a gravity of twenty-nine to forty (29 to 40) in this depth, and the NATURAL conditions surrounding this may enable the operators to care for same, see?

R1. 5/27/26 (Thursday morning) Mr. [4906]‘s letter to EC:

My dear Cayce

Well Cayce, I know you are wondering what has happened to me, that you have not heard from me, since sending the reading on Rocky. Well I will tell you hurriedly. Cayce when your reading reached me I was the proud possessor of a nice oil well on the lands that I enclosed the may and asked you to pass on it, and have four nice wells now. Three oil wells and a gas well, and today we are starting three more new wells. Two contractors moved in yesterday and I will move today - my well are only 785 ft. deep, and come in all the way from 15 to 50 bbls, which makes it a nice property. My partner wants to go in with me at San Saba, but Cayce I don’t know about taking in any one on that well - it seems to me it is a job for me alone, then I can answer how the money is spent but I would have no control over it if I had a partner in it, and it was along this line, that I asked God to help me some way, to make enough money to drill this well, and sure enough I got a nice well and have 1/4 interest in the whole 1085 acres. I know my prayer was answered. Cayce I have made two trips to San Saba to get my leases. There were two men one from Pittsburg, Pa., the other from Ill. Oil men wanted to get in my block but Old Man Leverett steered them away and then they started in to get leases as close as possible, to mine. It seems that every thing that happens, builds up so that I’ll get to drill that well, and I feel that it will be a wonder well, and if it is then maybe I may be able to do enough good in the world to balance the “Great White Sheet” on which there is so many black marks on my side. Cayce let me know how you feel about my undertaking and if there is something that tells you too, that it will come out just as you have predicted. Cayce I got your little booklet [Cayce Institute for Psychic Research]. It was grand and should make even the wisest stop and think. Cayce you must not break faith with me because you do not get an answer to letters just when you should for I spend most of my time in the camp at the wells 48 miles from home and sometimes it’s ten days that I don’t get home. So you see with this lease on my hands I do not have much lines to write. But you must write to me. Well, Cayce I must hurry to the lease and get things going. They all wait on me for their orders.

Dear Mr. [4906]:

Hurrah for hooray! Certainly was glad to have yours of the 27th, and to know that you had some nice wells. I’m in hopes that before this time you have gotten several more, and that things are going along fine. It certainly is a wonderful thing that you have at last broken that “jinx” as you might say, and things are turning round.

Now, as regards the San Saba proposition, you know I’m of the opinion that, as near as possible, you ought to handle that thing by yourself. Now, I wouldn’t say that if I didn’t think that it was a mighty sure thing, and that may be a little bit of a selfish thing to say it even that way. However, I’m sure you have studied the thing well enough to have arrived at the correct solution and the correct way of handling it. I certainly am glad to know that you have gotten the cooperation of Mr. Leverett and Jim Baker. You know I lived in that country long enough, and worked under such circumstances, that unless I’m a “plumb” fool, I would have learned a whole lot about those people. I’m in hopes it won’t be very long before you’ll be ready to get things in there. When you get started, if there is any way, by hook or crook, that I can get there, I am coming! UNLESS you feel that its best that I shouldn’t. I have understood from several sources that there is a great deal of speculation in that adjoining country at the present time, and possibly there is the prospect of more real development in that territory at the present time than there has ever been. I mean men that are going to give real tests! I don’t think, out of the fifteen wells that have been drilled in San Saba, that there’s a single solitary one that’s had a fair showing. I know the one’s we had didn’t!

No, you may be very sure that I will always have faith in you, for though you may feel there are many black marks against you, I feel, and always have since I have known you, that your heart was right and the real intent and purpose was always to do the right thing. You may have mis-applied many of the talents for good that God has given you, but now that you know you have established that direct communication with Him, I am sure you will not fail or falter in keeping your promises to Him. You know, after all, Mr. [4906], this is the thing that appears to me to be the real thing in the lives of so many of our great men. They have promised God they would do so much, and He has, as it were, to term it in common phraseology, tried many of us out. As long as we have kept faith, and worked to that One Purpose that He has promised us, all has been well, whether in successes or in adversities, yet when we have in heart and purpose broken faith, THEN consternation, fear, and trembling enters in, for we, within our inner selves, know we haven’t kept our promises. No matter what we try to make out to the other fellow that we believe, no matter what we go about and say, for there’s a many a man denies that a God is in word, and then proceeds to live the life that proves that He IS! Just as there are many men that by word of mouth make long supplications to be heard of men, make many pretentions towards good, but his real inner life is lived in a manner disproving of everything he has said.

But I’d like to hear from you whenever you have time. You know I’m mighty busy, just as yourself. There are times that come up that I feel like I’d like to talk to you a minute, but I don’t want to bother you, but I believe from now on I’ll let you hear from me occasionally, whether I hear from you or not - but you let me hear whenever it’s possible.

Dear Cayce,

I know you are wondering what I am doing, and how I am getting along with the well. I have been pretty busy. I have gotten together what I think is the most complete block in Texas - Seventeen Thousand acres, all solid. And have started up the well. I finally got the machine on your exact spot. Thirty paces north east, junction of the two creeks. It sure cost lots to put it there. I sure was disappointed not to get water where you said I would at 125 ft. and case which the big pipe at 135. I am 150 feet deep now and no show of water at all. What about that now?

The water in the creek is all gone about enough to drill two days. Missing the surface water will force me to lay line to the river. I had not planned on having to lay line to the river. I don’t see how you missed it. I would like to hear from you on this point.

I have moved to San Saba and put my boy in school there. I have had several big oil men come down there figuring on going in on the deal, but they show up regularly when they stop at the Urquhart Hotel. Some of them old quacks always ask them if they know Cayce, and of course it starts from there, and they leave. This well can only be drilled by handling it from a business standpoint. One old fellow called me but I have forgotten his name he is club footed. Two oil men were with me and wanted to know if I was interested with Cayce in the Rock Pasture. I told them I had never heard of you. It made me mad as blazes. It is hard to get the big men to play in that county anyway and when I get one about ready to go in and put up the money, some old fool pops up. Don’t tell those people nothing, and I’ll get along better.

Every one in San Saba knows about the old well and they talk their heads off, too. [[3777] series?]

You write me there Box 148 and please use plain envelope. You remember I went to Lampasas to wire you. As I did not want every one there to know my business you know to the public. I am drilling on Geology, and if it gets out for certain that I am drilling on your location then I will not be able to get any one to put up any money.

My dear Mr. [4906]:-

I have yours of the 20th. It seems peculiar, in the first instance, to write you at Box 148, when that was my Post Office Box for nearly a year or more.

Yes, I have been wondering, ever since your wire, as to how you were getting along and how things were going. I’m certainly glad to know that you have gotten a nice block of acreage together there, and unless something unforeseen happens, if you will keep right on down, you are going to get THE well of wells in Texas. I don’t understand about the water level. I can’t say just what is the cause of your not locating it there, and I’m sure this, with all of the hearsay and talk that you must hear around the place, has given you some misgivings - some doubts or fears. I certainly wouldn’t let this occur, however, for I am just as certain that you are going to find oil there as anything in the world. I know it’s going to be a hard proposition for you to raise water from the river, necessitate a long line and one that will be an expense to you to keep up, and have to water after if it runs well into the winter with the operations. Not enough in the tank on adjoining acreage, I suppose, to consider using that? but no doubt you have found water before this in the well sufficient to take care of all you need. I’m sure you will find it, for it’s there.

I can’t figure out just who you refer to as the club-footed man. It is certainly very interesting to know that people are even commenting and belittling my efforts, and I am sure they would really be ashamed of themselves could they but realize that those efforts, however they may be belittling them, are the real cause of their getting a test at this time. I wonder, too, if they really knew the truth of the first operations, just how they would feel. It is the fate of a great many of us to be belittled by people that don’t understand our efforts, and I don’t blame the people at the Urquhart Hotel one bit for saying any manner of things that they may say, for I believe I can truthfully say, “Lord forgive them, they know not what they do.” But I’m sure it must be amusing to you to be questioned by so many people, of so many minds, and I am sure you have heard all manner of tales. I wonder where the thread of truth is in any of them. I’m sure there’s some there, in any of them but I’m in hopes, and I verily believe, that you will prove to these people I was not such a darn fool after all. When you are all through, and have got the well, I’d like mighty well to come down to see you. As I told you in the first place, I wouldn’t ever, with any of them save Mother Moore, say that you ever had anything or even know me, for I believe that I know what manner of man you are, and I know that you’re gong to do the right thing, as you see it, no matter if the heavens fall, nor what the other fellow may say, or DO as for that matter. The right as you see it you’ll do.

Now, we are all booked up for work for six or eight weeks in advance, but any time anything comes up that you want me to see what will be said, I’ll figure it in some way or another, if I have to work on Sunday. I’m sure you’re going to work through it alright, and if you can get Udden to give you a report on the next to the last cutting of the old well that was sent him, you won’t have any trouble getting any of the oil men interested with you. Those were sent him by one of the Johnson boys, who were in the grocery business there in San Saba. They were cuttings from the well at 1608 feet.

Let me hear from you whenever you have the opportunity. You know I’m always anxious to hear. Don’t, however, do anything that would jeopardize your best interests for the success of the operations. You may be very sure that I will say nothing to any of the people in that country as regarding what’s going on, or that I know anything about it - though several of them have sent me clippings from the papers and the comments have certainly been very interesting.

R10. 10/14/26 EC’s letter to A. D. Butler: ”…Nothing has ever been done with the situation of things in San Saba County. Through the friendship with Grandma Moore, I, in a way, held on to the lease on Rocky and finally got a man to go in there to try to develop it. One of the men I gave some work for in Dayton. He got 17,000 acres in a block, with Rocky practically in the center. The location is on the original location that was made in the first reading. The last report, about a week ago, it was down about a hundred and fifty feet, so he has only been working on it a very short while. His contract is, shut his eyes and drill to 3,000 feet, irrespective or, as he said to the 2600 hundred. I’m begging he gets oil, aren’t you? Should these developments work out…be about as strong as anything in the country, don’t you think?…”

R11. 12/7/26 Mr. [4906]‘s letter: “I suppose you consider me your silent partner. Well, you know I can never find time to write, but there are many times each day I wish I could talk to you, but by the time I get around to writing you conditions have changed, so I have been fighting it alone.

“I have drilled to a depth of 820 feet, got the top of a hard lime at 776 with a little show of oil and gas at 10 feet in it. I had to shut down and make a trip to Okla. to sell some acreage and, of course, when I got back the hole had filled with water and it caved badly but I cleaned it out and drilled into the lime to 820, getting several little breaks 2 feet thick of dark slate, then back into lime again. Then I was called to Baird, Texas, where my lease is, to attend drilling in our #9 Snyder, and left my tool-dresser to keep the hole bailed out and cleaned out, and he got hung up, and covered up with cavings, and a fishing job resulted. I had to cut the line and clean out, but they are laying over in the walls and nothing will go over them. I am going to drill by them and run wall hook, and I think I can get them that way. But what I want to know most is, should I set the pipe where I am now or must I try to go on to 969. Will I have any slate between 820 and 969, or is it all lime. If lime, why not set the pipe now when I get the tools out? The hole is caving badly and may cover me up at any time. Let me know by return mail what to do in regards to setting the pipe. I talked to one of the men who worked on the old well and he said at 100 feet in the lime I would get a hole full of water. Is this so? If it is, I had better run my 10” now, and then case through the water with 8”.

“What I want to know is this: This well is taking more money than I ever thought it would, and this fishing job will cost at least $2,000 to get it cleared up, and I am hard run. My wife and I have talked over selling our 1/4 interest in our Baird lease and putting it in here; it seems the only way out. Now, Cayce, take a reading and find out if I should sell my interest there and put the reading in here at San Saba. We are not decided what to do. I believe there is a deep sand under our Baird leases, ad if there should be, my 1/4 would be worth a fortune. I know you can tell me what to do, and I am willing to abide by your reading. Let me know this at once. My partners at Baird are anxious to buy my out. I think they are planning on drilling a well to cook sand. All our wells at present are in shallow sand at 785 to 805…

“Cayce, I wrote you once about my lease at Baird, Texas, but you did not know exactly what I wanted to know, so you did not read on it, and wrote me regarding what to do. I did not answer… You hit it, Cayce. What’s right as I see it I will do, if the heavens fall that minute. I have a map partly completed to send to you, showing what acreage I have, what I have sold, and what I have left, and what I got for it. I will send it to you when I get it completed. I am so anxious to hear what to do about setting the 10” in Rocky, and whether to sell the Baird lease or not. So please let me hear at once. If this well in Rocky Pasture hits as you say, I take all your hospital stock and then put that much more in the bank to run it on. I’ll be busy on my fishing job and watching daily for your reply…

“Just now I am kept hot running to the bank to take up overdrafts. You know to drill a well here and start with $35, it keeps a man busy, and that’s what I had to my name in cash the day I started. I have gotten my block, sold 9,000 worth of acreage and am going on to 2600. Some people said it can’t be done, but I am doing it and paying my bills as I go. Whenever there’s a will there’s a way.”

R12. 12/15/26 Riley Hurst’s letter: “Charlie Moore came over last week and stayed a few days with me. He said Grandma Moore was in awful poor health and did not think she would be with us much longer.”

R13. 12/29/26 Mr. [4906]‘s letter: “Three weeks ago yesterday I wrote to you what was to me the most important letter I have ever written you and I am at a loss to know why I haven’t heard from you. I wanted to know 2 things very badly, or at least wanted to know what you would have to say about them. One was about this well here, and the other was about selling my lease at Baird, Texas. I wish you would answer this letter at once, as it may mean a lot in the progress of this well. The fishing job that I have here is a bad one. I am making one more attempt to clean the hole. If I have to plug it, you know what that means. As this well means just as much to you as it does to me, I think I should hear from you, especially on the points that mean success or failure of this venture. Maybe you were away, or my letter was lost, or you have been sick. Let me know, Cayce, at once. I feel that something is wrong that I do not hear from you.”

B5. 4/16/26 EC’s letter to [4906]:

My dear Mr. [4906]:-

I certainly appreciated yours of the 31st, and if you only knew just how busy that I have been, you would pardon me for having delayed in getting this reading on Rocky. I’m enclosing you though what was gotten to-day, and I am in hopes that this will prove of help and assistance to you in locating the well, and I trust that the underlying conditions are somewhere near as accurate as the surface conditions, as I remember them in my normal state. Be sure and let me know what you think of it. I guess you have seen the people in San Saba sometime recently, for I understand from other sources that some of them are rather anxious to know just what you intend doing.

Now, as regarding the present operations, I don’t know whether I just understand what you want or not. However, if you want me to undertake a reading, as I understand it, please drop me a wire and I will undertake it as best I can, from the information we have in hand. I’m in hopes things are going well with you, and that you are making a whole lot of money. I understand from some of the boys in Wichita that there is expected to be a great deal of wild catting this spring and summer. They possibly will eventually have one of the wildest when you go into San Saba, but it’s my earnest and sincerely belief that that will be one time you will fool ‘em all and bring in one of the biggest wells in the country. I’m in a hurry to get this off, but please let me hear from you by wire, if you want me to go ahead of this, or write me at once just what you want. I’m glad to say we are all fairly well here.
