R1. 8/31/32 See her daughter’s reading 605-1 indicating EC had given a reading for the mother during pregnancy [early July 1919].

R2. 12/5/33 EC’s letter to Mrs. [844], aunt of [605]: “You do not know how happy it makes me to feel that I may have been of some little help to [605]… I do not know that I would recognize her on the street, but the word that her mother [4925] sent me (which I take to be the truth) for the reading that was given her just a few days before she passed on, has been a real joy to me, to know that possibly through this information a little peace, a little rest even, was hers before this child came into the world. For, the reading told her at the time there could be certain things done that would bring her physical relief, and that the child would be born and would be well, but that she would pass on. And to have been of some little help possibly, as you say, to the child in fitting herself to meet the emergencies of life, to meet the things that may arise in her own experience, I know must bring happiness and a joy we cannot understand to that mother.”

R4. 7/27/57 Sister’s letter: “My sister [4925] was the patient referred to in ‘EDGAR CAYCE, MAN OF MIRACLES’ [Page 154-155 of the paper back edition] by Joseph Millard. This reading on my sister has meant so much to me and my other sisters. We would have been worried about my niece [605], because the doctors had said she could not live. She [605] is now 38, and I heard her say recently that she has perfect health. I think she is definitely exhibit A for anyone who wants to PROVE Edgar Cayce possessed powers beyond human comprehension.

“My sister, [4925], died ten days after the birth of her daughter. Her readings were given in 1919. I can tell you a lot about her for we lived together and there were three doctors: Dr. Haggard of Nashville, Tenn., Dr. Gant Gaither

• later President of Kentucky Medical Society, Dr. Ed. Stone, all in attendance on my sister, all said this baby could not live and did not think the mother would live to give birth to the child.”

R5. 5/9/60 Sister’s (another sister) report: “My sister [4925] had a condition which now perhaps, with X-Ray, could have been detected in its early stages, an operation performed, and I think her life could have been saved.

“We will never be able to prove the unlimited gifts of Edgar Cayce. Referrals were usually made to him when the licensed and recognized physicians had exhausted their resources and the patient was on the incurable list.

“In the case of my sister all hope had been abandoned by numerous doctors and nurses. We followed the instructions of the local practitioner, but with his limited facilities of 1919 he was treating her for a disease she did not have. [4925]‘s condition grew steadily worse - a baby was expected in August - it was obvious that there were complications that would require the services of a surgeon.

“The most famous surgeon in the South was called into consultation and assisted by our local surgeon, preformed two operations, too late to benefit the patient. It was predicted by the three doctors, and numerous nurses, that the mother would not live long enough to give birth to the expected baby.

“At this time of crisis Edgar Cayce was consulted - all hope had been abandoned for both mother and baby. Edgar Cayce was in Selma, Alabama. My sister [4925] was in …, Kentucky. Edgar was told nothing of the nature of the case. After the usual preliminaries he said:

“‘We have the body here - there are two living to be considered. It is too late to save the mother but she will live to give birth to the baby. The baby will live, and let there be no fear for her. The condition under which the mother is living during pregnancy will not affect this baby, and she can live a normal, healthy life.’

“He prescribed an unheard of concoction comprised of simple ingredients with a base made of a brew from the bark of slippery elm. We went to the forest, obtained the bark of the slippery elm, prepared the formula, gave it to my sister as directed. [4925] became more comfortable. The baby, expected in August, arrived July 18th on the stroke of midnight. My sister died easily, after naming her child. The baby was pathetically weak - so tiny - the doctors advised us not to give her the name suggested by the mother, they said we would be wasting a family name. A good Christian mother heard of our distress and offered to nurse baby [605] with her own child. This offer we accepted and after about six weeks the baby was put on a formula, gained weight rapidly, and is now married and has two lovely daughters. She [605] was born July 18, 1919.”

R7. 2/16/61 Sister of [4925] took out membership in A.R.E. for Mrs. [605], saying: “This is the baby (now 41 years of age) that Edgar said would live when three doctors said she would NOT. Hugh Lynn conversed with her when he was here and KNOWS she is very much alive and is the mother of two very fine daughters.”

R8. 3/1/66 Mrs. [844]‘s letter: “My husband [486]‘s sister, [4925], had two daughters and the younger one, [605], was reared by [486]‘s mother when she was 65 yrs. of age. She had to be taken at birth and her mother, [4925], died of cancer later.”
