This psychic Reading given by Edgar Cayce at the office of the Association, Arctic Crescent, Virginia Beach, Va., this 19th day of April, 1944, in accordance with request made by the self - Mrs. [5037], Associate Member of the Ass”n for Research and Enlightenment, Inc.
[Edgar Cayce; Gertrude Cayce, Conductor; Gladys Davis, Steno.]
In the 2nd house Time of Reading along shore from 10:30 to 11:30 A. M. Eastern War Time. Island Station, or Georgian Bay, Ontario, Canada.
-
GC: You will go over this body carefully, examine it thoroughly, and tell me the conditions you find at the present time; giving the cause of the existing conditions, also suggestions for help and relief of this body; answering the questions, as I ask them.
-
EC: Yes, we have the body here, [5037].
-
As we find there are disturbances in the physical forces of the body. These are the result of accidents to the body. These need some definite physical and mechanical attention.
-
There was not as much precaution taken with this body at those periods of childbirth as there should have been. There were pressures created in the lumbar and sacral and along those areas where blood flow returns from or through arterial circulation, which cause the activities when blood returns in veins to produce a plethoric condition along the inside of the limbs. This gives a great deal of distress to the body at times.
-
Do keep off of the feet as much as practical through at least ten days or two weeks of these applications that may be suggested for the body, and there will be the ability to bring much bettered conditions.
-
These are results in the physical. In the physical they must be met. While the body has an attunement to the mental and spiritual aspects of conditions within and without the body, these are results in the physical. Let’s meet them in the physical.
-
THEN the keeping of the correct mental attitude will be much more effective for this body.
-
There first needs to be osteopathically, or neuropathically, corrections made in the lumbar and sacral area, especially the connecting of the association of the return flow through the areas of blood from extremities to body; thus relieving the stresses and pressures made upon portions of the body.
-
Do apply Mullein Stupes over the areas where there is the engorging of the veins, at least twice a week. Gather the mullein leaves, bruise these and pour boiling water over them (in an enamel pan or glass container, not aluminum nor tin). Then place over the affected areas.
-
Take internally each day about two-thirds of a teacup of Mullein Tea. Use dried mullein for this - a pinch between thumb and forefinger, put in a cup and pour boiling water over same, allowing to set for thirty minutes. Strain off, cool and drink just about two-thirds of a cup, daily.
-
Do have regular rest periods, and at least for the ten days or two weeks that these treatments are followed, rest with the feet gently propped high, or as high as or higher than the head.
-
Thus with these massages, with these applications, we will bring relief for the tensions in the limbs, this tiredness across the abdominal area, and better conditions for the body.
-
Ready for questions.
-
(Q) How may I grow strong enough to do the work I’m supposed to do? (A) Do the things indicated here. Rest, as well as apply those things to remove nerve tension that takes the strength of the body.
Don’t try to do with the mental self that which must be done for the body in the mechanical manner.
- We are through with this Reading.

Reports & Follow-up
R1. 4/19/44 P.M. She obtained Life Reading, 5037-2.
R2. 6/2/44 Letter: ”…Your diagnosis was borne out by my doctor here. I asked him to take an x-ray; without knowing it, he used your own words: ‘Why you have had an accident to your back’. But Mr. Cayce, he went on to say it’s too late to do anything about it. ‘You must never go to an osteopath or you will get into serious trouble. You must not touch it for that would be dangerous.’ I however, have made arrangements to see Dr. J. A. Q. [Dr. Donald A. Jaquith, D.O.]. If the reading had not said to have it done by an osteopath, I would not be going on because this medical doctor has tried to frighten me. He is a personal friend, and believes he is doing right. He has asked me to look at the x-rays, and then he says I will understand that the back cannot be helped. I wish to thank Miss Davis for the list of osteopathic doctors…”
R3. 6/15/44 Letter: “I returned from … this morning. I did not write sooner because the doctor I saw there seemed to be in confusion himself as to any real recovery for me. I was very fortunate in being led to Dr. J. A. Q. [Dr. Donald A. Jaquith, D.O.] who had heard of you… He had a new set of x-rays taken and consulted with 3 other doctors concerning them. Yesterday he told me that they do not see how the back can be corrected unless over a period of a number of years it can be coaxed into a normal position. In fact I had the feeling that he did not believe it possible to correct it. However through treatment and certain exercises he believes I can help relieve the situation. I feel certain that if I could not be helped, the reading would say so. While I was away, the medical doctor here told my husband that there were small patches of arthritis along the vertebrae, and that if I had treatments the arthritis would start to grow rapidly. Of course, I am a firm believer in the reading. It seems to me that if the situation is impossible, the reading would say so…”
R4. 8/14/44 Letter: ”…I do not have my back corrected yet, but an amazing thing happened. My reading said I was to drink Mullein Tea and put it on my legs. I did not know what mullein [See description below] was, and wondered how I could get it at the Island. On the way to the Island, I met a man who told me what mullein was. When I arrived at the Island, lo and behold, it was growing in tall majestic stalks near the door of the cabin. The only thing growing of its own accord - except evergreens!…”
R5. GD’s note: This description of the mullein is taken from the 1960 edition of THE HERBALIST, by Jos. E. Meyer, obtained from Indiana Botanic Gardens, Inc., Hammond, Indiana:
MULLEIN (Verbascum Thapsus, Figwort Family)
Common Names - Velvet Dock, Velvet Plant, Flannel Leaf.
Medicinal Parts - The leaves and flowers.
Description - This biennial plant has a straight, tall, stout, woolly, simple, stem. The leaves are alternate, oblong, acute, and rough on both sides. The flowers are of a golden-yellow color; calyx, five-parted; corolla, five-lobed; stamens, five, and fruit, a capsule or pod.
Mullein is common in the United States, but was undoubtedly introduced from Europe. It grows in recent clearings, slovenly fields, and along the side of roads, flowering from June to August. The leaves and flowers are the parts used. They have a faint, rather pleasant odor, and a somewhat bitterish, albuminous taste, and yield their virtues to boiling water.
Properties and Uses: It is demulcent, diuretic, anodyne, and anti-spasmodic, the infusion being useful in coughs due to colds, diarrhea, etc. It may be boiled in milk, sweetened, and rendered more palatable by aromatics for internal use. A fomentation of the leaves in hot vinegar and water forms an excellent local application for external irritations, as for the itching of piles. A handful of them may be also placed in an old teapot, with hot water, and the stream be inhaled through the spout, in the relief of nasal congestion or catarrh, throat irritation, etc.
Dose - A teaspoonful of the leaves to a cup of boiling water. Drink cold 1 or 2 cupfuls a day, a large mouthful at a time; of the tincture, 1/2 to 1 fl. dr.
R6. 4/13/45 Letter: ”…Up to now I have been primarily interested in the treatment for my son, which I came here to give, and the effort to get entirely well myself. I have not found the doctor for myself yet, but continually give the treatments to my son with every confidence that I shall soon have him well…”
R7. 9/21/48 Letter: ”…I am having trouble with my eyes. I want to be sure I do the right thing. Would it be too much trouble for you to write out exactly what you did for your eyes?…” [Cases 341-2, 3884-1, 4206-1 and 4413-1 sent in response to the request.]
R8. 2/14/49 Letter: “I have been very ill…of a chest cold…”
R9. 3/23/49 Letter: ”…I was ashamed to have been very ill, but a grief started it, and then I could not halt it…
I have found that grief is a serious thing to deal with. Since it always involves the love of something, it should not be too much of a sin, although I know many things; there is so much I wish to know. My whole trouble has been in the chest…”
R10. 8/10/49 Letter on extracts used for eyes: “Used as directed for few weeks. Became ill later and could not use treatment. While following the directions faithfully, eyes improved very much. I shall be returning to this treatment again after summer holidays. The good result had been very pronounced.”
R11. 6/6/50 Letter: ”…I just found the correct doctor in … just before I left. I have to go back to him to have correct treatments before I can give the proper report on my own reading…”
R12. 10/16/52 Mrs. [5037] has renewed her active membership annually. She also writes frequently indicating a keen interest in ARE activities.
R13. 9/27/67 GD’s note: For Circulating Files in re the dried Mullein Leaves, your druggist can order them from any crude drug firm if he does not already have them in stock. [S. B. Penick & Co. is a wholesaler.]

B1. 9/17/43 Letter: ”…I realize there are many ahead of this one, but I hope I am not too far down the list. I have a feeling that I was led to you through prayer… My primary purpose is to aid my little son [3676]. However, I too would like a reading… I have read ‘There Is A River’, parts of it many times… Besides a Physical Reading, I wanted some vocational advice.”
B2. 9/20/43 Letter: ”…I also wanted a reading for myself in regard to health. I must become stronger before I can do things for others. I wonder what is the cause and cure for varicose veins… With deep gratitude to you and to your family and staff, and to God for this answer to my prayer.”
