This Psychic Reading given by Edgar Cayce at Phillips Hotel, Room 115, Dayton, Ohio, this 8th day of January, 1924, in accordance with request made by the father, via George LaBryn.

1. EC: Now, we find that the specific conditions have to do with the organs of the sensory system. Especially the inflammation as is produced in the eye proper. The distress comes through the sympathetic system and the reflexes to the nerves of the eye proper, though not destructive as yet to the lens or pupil, or cornea corpora portion of the cells leading from the back portion of eye to the brain proper, though the portion of the eye where the fluid of ball itself has become involved, and this causes distress and strain on the nerve system and affects the circulation in other portions of the body. This specific condition needs first attention.

2. For the condition, we would apply these two ingredients to the eye. Bathe both eyes (externally) with twenty percent solution boracic acid. [See 3884-1, Par. R7.] Then apply, in rather sufficient quantity to cover the socket or place of eye, the scraped parts of commonly known irish potato. Let this be of the larger variety as possible, and one that has not frozen or sprouted. When the inflammation has so packed this solution, or application, as to render it of no service, (this is to be applied direct, of course, to the eye of course with the eye closed) remove this, and bathe with equal parts of ten percent solution of boracic acid and ten percent solution of myrrh tincture.

3. Then apply the Yellow Oxide Ointment to the affected parts, and in the edge of the eye proper, near the tear ducts, you see, so this works in under the lids.

4. After this has remained for some thirty to forty minutes, bathe again in the twenty percent solution of boracic acid, and apply again the potato, scraped, you see.

5. Repeat these, with only a short interval between, until inflammation is subsided and ease obtained for the physical forces.

6. Then other solutions will be applied. With the solution of acid, add one part of belladonna, which is the strong solution, and this will be used as drops, in the corner of the eye, and when bathed again apply the potato.

7. Give the body the vibrations from the violet ray over the cervical and neck and shoulders, and gently down the spine, and remove by manipulation the lesion formed in the third and fourth cervical.

8. Do that.

9. Do that immediately.

10. (Q) How often should the vibrations be given with the violet ray? (A) Begin about the third day after we begin with the treatment. They will be given each day.

I have your wire of the 9th. The belladonna would be made one part of belladonna to two parts of water. The acid would be made a ten percent solution and one drop of the belladonna to every ten drops of the acid solution. This is the proportion as is meant in where belladonna is to be applied. The solutions are to be used during the time the violet ray is applied to the body.

Gentlemen;

This morning I received a file on Myopia that I am sure was intended for Mr. Thomas F. Fogle of Phoenix, Ariz. I had one ordered on Hypnosis and I feel sure he propable [probably?] got that. I will send it on to him.

In this file I noticed that on page 2 of Extracts on eyes that he says bathe both eyes with 20% Boric Acid in solution. Remington’s Practice of Pharmacy gives this information under Liquor Acidi Borici of Saturated Sol. of Boric Acid.

50 GMS Boric Acid. Dist Water Sufficient Quantity to make 1,000 cc.

This would be a 5%. (If it is a water solution Mr. Cayce means) It says that upon chilling or upon evaporation of the solvent Solution of Boric Acid tends to deposit crystals or become slightly turbid because of the formation of minute crystals. I am wondering if as a pharmacist I might offer my services free of charge to the association if and when they have anything that I might be of value to. If you feel that I could be of service to the association which I am so interested in please let me know.

BACTERIA, THIS SPUD’S FOR YOU To stop bacteria from making you ill, you may not have to kill them. Just don’t let them stick around, suggest Marjorie M. Cowan of Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, and her colleagues.

They’ve been studying the common potato, which people have used for centuries to combat skin infections. Other scientists have found potato compounds that kill bacteria, but Cowan’s group wondered whether tubers also contain substances that prevent microbes from adhering to cells. Indeed, the team found that extracts of material from just under the potato skin block bacterial adhesion. A compound called polyphenol oxidase (PPO), prevalent in potatoes and other plants, may be responsible. “It’s a plant defense mechanism against fungi and insects,” says Cowan. She calls for pharmaceutical companies, which often screen plants for bacteria killing agents, to also look for compounds that inhibit bacterial adhesion.

Miami University, Oxford, Ohio published the following news release:

Miami University microbiologist Marjorie (Kelly) Cowan and her laboratory have identified a substance in the potato that can fight infections.

The naturally occurring substance doesn’t kill bacteria, but rather prevents the microbes from attaching to human cells.

Cowan’s research interests in microbial adhesion led to her work with the potato. Potatoes have long been used in other cultures as a topical treatment of burns to help prevent the scarring caused by infections.

The potato works as an anti-infective, but has no bacterial killing capability. Cowan suspected that the potato extract could instead prevent attachment of microbes to human tissues. Her lab found that a water extract of potato inhibited the attachment of bacteria (oral streptococcus) to the tooth surface. The extract also prevented the attachment of the bacteria E.coli-which cause 90 percent of urinary tract infections-to host cells.

Cowan’s lab identified the anti-adhesive substance in the potato extract as the enzyme PPO, which is common in fruits and vegetables and is the chemical that causes them to burn brown as they age.

The study of anti-adhesives will become increasingly important as microorganisms become resistant to many antibiotics. “Without attachment to (human calls), 99 percent of infections can’t occur,” explains Cowan.

Currently, plants are primarily tested for their ability to kill bacteria, a method that may rule out potentially important anti-adhesive substances. The approach studied by Cowan provides an alternative “kinder, gentler” method for the prevention of infections.

Working with Cowan on this study were Miami microbiology major Megan Gassert (graduated January 2000) and Ryan Terlecki, a microbiology major from Hillsdale College who worked in Cowan’s lab as a summer intern in 1999 through the Howard Hughes Medical Institute program.

Cowan is an assistant professor of Microbiology at Miami Middletown. The research was presented at the 100th American Society for Microbiology meeting in May.

Have received your letter of Dec. 31. I regret to state that thou I am unable to remit the fee of 25.00 as requested, I would gladly remit this amt if it were possible for me to do so, thou circumstances prevent me from doing so. I have a wife and two children and as stated in previous letter daughter [3884] has lost the sight of her right eye. I have had specialist in this city and other cities doctoring the eye and my wife and I have scrapped every penny to pay the fees of these doctors. I am a railroad clerk and with salary I make it has been a hard tussle for myself & family.

[3884] has been under care of doctors for over a year now and instead of her eye improving it is becoming worse and doctors now state that it may be necessary to remove the right eye to save the sight of left.

I have about given up hope and having heard of your wonderful work through Mr. Geo LaBryn I still have hope that you may be able to help [3884] whose future does not look bright under present circumstances. I am enclosing $5.00 which is all I could scrap together at this time and will send more as soon as possible - due to the critical condition of my daughters eye I trust that you will be able to give reading on date Jan 8 - 3 PM and she will be at home at that time.
