This psychic reading given by Edgar Cayce at his home on Arctic Crescent, Virginia Beach, Va., this 9th day of February, 1934, in accordance with request made by the mother, Mrs. […], Associate Member of the Ass”n for Research & Enlightenment, Inc.
[Edgar Cayce; Gertrude Cayce, Conductor; Gladys Davis, Steno. Mildred Davis.]
Time of Reading 12:00 to 12:10 Noon Eastern Standard Time. …, Va. (Physical Suggestion)
-
EC: Yes. We have the body here, [512]. This we have had before.
-
Many changes in the general physical forces of this body since last we had same. Most of these are for the betterments.
-
When there is kept ALL of those suggestions in the application of the low electrical vibrations, as indicated, better and better should be the reactions. And the electrical vibration should be kept full charge, see; that is, very soon the properties that charge the battery should be renewed.
-
But after such treatments a gentle massage should be given all along the cerebro-spinal system. Begin at the base of the brain, and over each segment - from the 1st dorsal to about the 9th dorsal - use the right hand (of the mother who is to apply the massage) in a rotary motion (with the middle finger) as from left to right, as the coffee mill grinds, see? Go over each segment gently, firmly, moving TOWARDS the 9th dorsal FROM the 1st cervical to the 9th dorsal, see? Then begin at the end of the spine, or coccyx area, and move in the opposite direction, from right towards left - just opposite from the grinding of the mill - move towards the central portion, or the 9th dorsal, very gently but very firmly over each segment. Make each treatment, the whole of same, for ten to fifteen minutes; not just as rote, but SEEING as it were - that there is being carried into the system the necessary vibrations to create proper coordination from each ganglion that is stimulated by such manipulation, see? with the points of the fingers, and it should be done directly on the body. Have the body lying, preferably, prone - as the massage is being applied. Hence it should be applied, of course, with the right hand, middle finger, preferably, see?
-
Then, with the body lying prone, begin with the umbilicii center, on each side, with both hands, and gently raise the body, pressing around the area of the diaphragm, see?
-
And keep the eliminations open, especially after each of these treatments. See that there is a perfect MOVEMENT of the alimentary canal. This with the treatment in the middle. Commence from each side of the umbilicii, or navel, and RAISE the body gently, just a little motion of the hands as it is brought to the 9th dorsal area; for there we bring it, you see, both from the top and from the lower end of the spine.
-
Then, lying the body on the back, see, place the right hand over the 9th dorsal area and the left hand over that just under the chin and over the thyroid glands. Not a movement of the hand, now, but just the gentleness to keep the body quiet.
-
These manipulations, these applications of the magnetic influences in the body of the mother making the application, will quiet the body to sleep, gently, and make the general coordinations throughout the system as the glands are supplying renewed energy, as the mental activities are carried on. And during such periods, in this meditation, give from the heart to the body these suggestions - to self and to the body:
-
MAY THERE BE BROUGHT INTO PHYSICAL MANIFESTATIONS THOSE THINGS AND ELEMENTS AS NECESSARY FOR THE MAKING OF PERFECT COORDINATION IN THIS BODY, AS GOD, THE FATHER, THROUGH THE LOVE AS SHOWN TO MAN IN THE GIVING OF THE CHRIST SPIRIT INTO THE WORLD, CREATE THAT NECESSARY FOR THE BEST NEEDS OF THIS BODY.
-
We are through for the present.

Reports & Follow-up
R1. 2/13/34 Mother’s letter: “Hearing from you with the ck. rdg. has made Mr. […] and me very happy, and will start this coming Mon., 2/19th on him. We are waiting for the battery water to renew the battery. Your kindness will never be forgotten, and you shall receive your ck. after this Sat. We realize we still owe you for the 1st rdg. which will be paid as soon as possible.”
R2. 7/5/34 Father wrote asking that some more Chloride of Gold be sent to them c.o.d. [7/7/34 EC had it sent from Snyder Pharmacy, telling him he could get it quicker next time by ordering direct.]
R3. 8/1/34 Mother’s letter: “We rec’d the Gold Solution quite a while ago, but hope to get the material in a day or so to get little [512]‘s battery started again. I am awfully uneasy about him. It will be 4 yrs. the 25th of April since he was operated on for those spells, and he jerks his eye bad sometimes and trembles all over. I never have used the massage your last rdg. called for. It says to use the massage after I use the battery. He goes to sleep as soon as the battery gets on him. So I am writing to ask you if the massage could be used before the battery treatment? and I am going to ask your advice on something and I feel sure that you will know exactly how to advise me.
“Do you think that little [512] should be sent to a school such as Mrs. Pope’s (Mrs. Anne M. Pope, Rosehill School, Chester Heights, Penna.) for training, etc.? and if he were to go to any school, could the teacher there in charge do the massage with the same results you mentioned, that they were to come through the mother? Not that we are able by far to send him away, or want to give him up, but we want to do what is best for him and we are asking your opinion and advice, for we feel that knowing his condition you would know best.
“I hope very soon to send you some money on your past rdgs. I will worry over it until you have it all, for you have been so good and kind.”
R4. 8/4/34 EC’s letter: I have just received yours of the 1st. We realize what a hardship the last few years have brought to most everyone, and what a struggle it is to meet the bare necessities of life; especially with a family and a child that is requiring a great deal of attention and considerable amount of expense.
But our purposes are just as sincere, I believe, as anyone’s. Of course, we do not want to make a burden, wherever it is possible to lend whatever power or influence may come through us for the assistance of individuals; yet it is upon just this alone that we depend for our livelihood. It isn’t as if we had some other source of income. There are seven in this office and organization whose whole sustenance depends upon the contributions that may be made by those for whom we have given our time and service. [EC; GC; HLC; EEC; LBC; GD and MD.]
And I feel very sure that you, as soon as your condition permits, will be as ready and as willing to contribute that you can towards the carrying on of the work that has tried to be of a service and a help to others. We appreciate your feelings in the matter, and hope you will understand our position. It is those who contribute very small sums that we rely upon; not upon any great benefactor, for we have tried such things. There might be those induced to contribute large sums, but they require with same that their own personal desires be considered first and foremost; while it is for the spiritual, physical and mental upbuild for our fellow man that we desire to give whatever help we may through this work.
I’m glad you have gotten all the things together again, and hope that very soon you will be able to give the entire treatment to little [512]. I’m sure it is just as necessary to see that he has the massage as it is that he gets the battery; and I’m sure you will find he will overcome a great deal of this trouble. Too, I’m sure you can give the massage before the battery just as well as afterward; that is, if, as you say, the battery affects him in such a way as to make him go right on to sleep. The idea was that the portions of the system be relaxed, that the Gold in the body through the battery might be more effective throughout; but I’m sure the change will be alright.
As for the training and schooling, I do not know of any place that would be better than with Mrs. Pope. However, as he is only four years old, [See 2/23/35 letter saying the child will be 8 yrs. old on 5/26/35. Until then we had not known his age.] I do not think this would be necessary yet; and by the time he is seven with all these treatments followed by you at home (and no one else could do them the same as a mother) - he should be able to better take advantage of any mental training that might be given; and that shouldn’t be too late. When the physical condition is all awry, you don’t want to overtax him by crowding the mental. He has plenty of time yet to learn. First, we must get his physical body in shape so that it can contain and carry out mental training. With these treatments given persistently and consistently, including the suggestions as the body goes to sleep at night, I feel that he is going to gradually develop into a normal, healthy boy. Then the mental training will be easy; while it is only a secondary thing at present. You are fortunate in being able to start with correcting the condition while he is so young; otherwise it would take much longer.
Thank you for your letter. I trust you will let us hear from you, and that you will understand just what our situation is and the attitude we hold.
R5. 2/23/35 Mother’s letter from West Va., where they are now living: “I know you will think me very foolish for writing for your advice about little [512], especially when I haven’t been able to do as you told me to do with him. It is rather hard to clothe the other children for school and feed all of them, along with other expenses, when work has been dull, but I’m going to start the battery on him Mon. Feb 25th, but I feel like I can’t make any steps further for [512]‘s future until I talk with you. He will be eight (8) years old the 26th of May, and although he has improved in understanding and can say anything he wants to, he is very destructive and never still. The State of West Virginia has recently built a hospital and school combined, at St. Mary’s, West Va. It has a wonderful reputation. The man that proposed the building of it is a friend of ours, a big American Legion man, and our neighbor, a Mrs. […] has a part in it. So there is no doubt in the world that [512] can be admitted, but that doesn’t mean everything. So without going into more details and taking up your time, I shall do as you advise regardless of what others wish or think. I am willing to do as you advise, whether it is to keep him at home or to put him in this school, which they claim is wonderful, until Christmas.”
R6. 2/26/35 EC’s letter: I’m just in receipt of yours of the 23rd and note what you have to say about [512] and about the improvement that has come; also the possibilities of your being able to put him in the school. I appreciate very much the confidence that you have in asking me to make this decision for you. I do not know that I have really a right to make any suggestions without questioning in a reading, but inasmuch as you say that you have been unable to follow the applications in a consistent manner, considering all circumstances it might be advisable for you to make the change; provided you are able to get the people in charge to apply the treatments. I know in some schools this is a plausible thing, especially if the individual has personal attention; in some others it is an unreasonable thing to ask, owing to the necessity of the children being treated as a group rather than individually. However, from what I have heard thus far from other sources respecting this institute in West Virginia, it would seem that you could get some personal attention. If this can be arranged, I would say by all means do that. It would make it better, no doubt, for the other children at home, giving you more time; and perhaps would be better for [512] too.
I hope this will work out for the best for everyone concerned. I assure you that we would be glad to cooperate in any way whereby we may be of the greatest service.
With kind regards, and hoping to hear from you again, I am Sincerely, EC:GD
R7. 3/3/35 Mother’s letter: “I rec’d your letter Fri. and thank you very much for your advice. The doctor was here yesterday making a statement of little [512]‘s condition and age, etc., to send in to the hospital I mentioned, and I learned through him that they would not use the battery but do their own experimenting and treating the child. Although [512] isn’t near up to standard in anything, he is improving in little things more every day. So you could imagine what he would be in a short while with proper training needed for a boy of his age and the battery with its treatments. In very plain words I’m ‘up a tree’ as to what I can do next, but I’m asking you if you could do me this favor. I’m enclosing some stamps and wonder if you will write Mrs. Anne M. Pope for me in regards to [512]. I would give him over in a minute’s time to her, for she works under your instructions faithfully. Well, to my wishes and opinion, she is the woman we ought to have him with. I wrote her 3 wks. ago and enclosed a stamped envelope but have gotten no reply…
“If Mrs. [959] can afford the expense for her [146], surely it can’t be so dreadful, but I will leave all this to your better judgement, and only wish that it were possible. If it isn’t, why I don’t know just what to do, as [512] needs training badly. We have grates in our house and he has burned everything up that we have, nearly. He burned a new coat up this morning. It is pretty bad on all of us; still, I hate to give him over to that hospital for new experiments and maybe useless results. It is a wonderful place and good specialists, but the better, etc., is what I wanted used, in fact what should be used. If you feel like you have no right or reasons to write Mrs. Pope, it is perfectly alright, Mr. Cayce, but I had hoped to try it before we take any further steps.”
R8. 3/8/35 EC’s letter: I received yours of the 3rd, and note what you have to say. I do not blame you for your feelings in the matter. It is oft too bad when circumstances are such that we have to put our loved ones in the position where we know they are not receiving that which might be their privilege to have. Yet in this particular case, I wonder if it wouldn’t be possible for you to persuade whoever has charge of [512] to at least give the battery treatments a try. I assure you I’ll be more than glad to write to Mrs. Pope, and I know that she has been in sympathy with our undertakings. And I’m writing her today, and I’m asking her to communicate directly with you as well as letting me hear from her. I hope that whatever comes will be for the very best.
With kind regards and best wishes, I am Sincerely, EC:GD
R9. 6/30/35 Mrs. Anne M. Pope’s letter: “Mrs. […] wrote to me that there was a State school near where they live and I advised her to put [512] there.”
R10. 7/16/36 (One year later) Mother’s letter: “Would you please give little [512] a ck. rdg. as soon as you possibly can? We have moved from …, W. Va. to … West Va. Would you please advise whether to send [512] away or not, after your rdg. of him.”
R11. 7/20/36 Mother’s letter, verifying appointment: “My question is, will I send [512] away to school or not, and what causes those convulsions, and can he be cured?”
