This psychic reading given by Edgar Cayce at the office of the Association, Arctic Crescent, Virginia Beach, Va., this 12th day of June, 1944, in accordance with request made by self - Mr. [5249], new Associate Member of the Ass”n for Research & Enlightenment, Inc., recommended by his mother, [5366], and the book, THERE IS A RIVER.

Born October 26, 1919, in Cleveland, Ohio. Time of Reading Set bet. 10:30 to 11:30 A. M. Eastern War Time. …, Mass.

1. GC: You will give the relations of this entity and the universe, and the universal forces; giving the conditions which are as personalities, latent and exhibited in the present life; also the former appearances in the earth plane, giving the development for the entity; giving the abilities of the present entity, that to which it may attain, and how. You will answer the questions, as I ask them.

2. EC: Yes, we have the records here of that entity now known as or called: [5249].

3. Quite an unusual record. A great many abilities if he doesn’t get too big for his breeches.

4. An entity, an individual who desires to reform the whole world and every individual with whom he comes in contact. At present it is not egotism. It is a body-mind with a vision. The desire is to do this through political, through economic situations, but who made thee to be a judge of thy fellow man? There are abilities within self and in giving the interpretations of the records, the entity has made, in those abilities and the urges, the vices, the virtues, these we choose with the desire and hope that this may be made a helpful experience for the entity, that it may apply same in truth, in sincerity, first finding self and self’s relationships to the sources of knowledge, the sources of help.

5. True, much has been builded in self, and all must be found within self. But who is the author? Not self, though self may apply.

6. As the entity would apply itself it may become one of the leading bankers of the nation, if it would apply itself in that direction, or in the field of engineering. But don’t marry until you have learned to control yourself. For you would attempt to control the little woman, and you won’t do it! For they are not to be controlled; they can be led but not driven, Mr.!

7. In choosing then of self and self’s activities, first know what is thy ideal, not merely as a theory but set it down on paper. Draw three lines and under each heading put: body, mind, soul. Under each of these headings write thy ideal, spiritual, mental, material. God, the Father: God, the Son; God, the Holy Ghost. Write the ideals in each under those headings also. Then find thy ideal under each. It will require time and patience and study of self, not judgment from others. Ye are not a judge of thy fellow man. You can be a banker and tell him when he can borrow and when he can’t, but don’t become the judge!

8. Use mind and prayer, of constantly living that ye set or find as thy ideal. Ye will, ye can, ye may succeed. Spiritually, mentally and materially.

9. Keep your feet on the ground; that is, be in that attitude of ever finding helpful things for others, for self, for making the world a better place because ye have lived in it.

10. And as ye judge, and as ye find in self, sincerity is the keynote of every individual soul. Who is sincere? One in a million! Ye can be one of those ones, will ye? Try it!!

11. As to the appearances in the earth, these have been quite varied, as is indicated from the exceptional abilities.

12. The entity was among those who were of the children of the law of one in the Atlantean period. This, as indicated, will be given backward from that ordinarily indicated, for these may mean much, they may mean nothing to the entity, but unless ye find the answer in self, forget it. For ye can use it for a building up or a tearing down of thine own abilities.

13. That thy activities in the present are far afield from those intimated, know ye have plenty of time, use it! Don’t abuse it!

14. Begin in the study of mathematics and those either for an engineer’s degree, or an accountant, and work in a bank if the accountant is chosen.

15. As to the experiences, in the Atlantean land the entity was the timekeeper for those who were called things, or the servants, or the workers of the peoples and the entity felt latent and manifest, as in the present, the wanting to reform, to change things, so that every individual soul had the right to freedom of speech, freedom of thought, freedom of activity. For to the entity, even in those periods of man’s unfoldment (for this was before Adam), the entity found during its activities the desire to improve, to make better those environs for the workers of that period. That alone brought into the entity’s consciousness man’s position, the need of a pattern. And the entity saw, the entity felt the need of God’s hand in what evil, or Satan, had brought in the earth. Don’t forget that! Whatever may be thy position in this present experience!

16. Through the experience the entity gained.

17. In the experience which followed this, we find the entity was in the Indian land or in those periods of Saad as the leader, the ruler. The entity was then what would be called the secretary of state, or in the inner group of the leader Saad, that made for contacts or associations with or agreements with other lands.

18. The entity then was among those who were of that group who gathered to rid the earth of the enormous animals which overran the earth, but ice, the entity found, nature, God, changed the poles and the animals were destroyed, though man attempted it in that activity of the meetings. 19. Later the entity indicated interest in the reforms being made in Egypt through the efforts of Ra Ta. The entity then, in the name Kudn, came into those experiences but during those periods when there was the banishment of the Priest, when these were being performed.

20. This brought confusion and the entity set its own undertaking for reformations in other lands. These did not succeed, for the peoples in the hills and the plains made war one with another.

21. In the experience following this we find the entity was in the Grecian land when there were those attempts for conquering of other peoples and other lands for the building up, for the easy-going experience for many, for the entity was one with Xenophon who attempted to change the activities, in the name then Xeron.

22. In this experience the entity gained spiritually, lost materially, and lost its hope on spirituality, condemning others. In that activity then, beware. Because of place or position, don’t let it change the ideal.

23. In the experience which followed that, and just before this, we find the entity was in the land when the land of the present nativity was coming under the changes following the period of reconstruction in the Revolution.

24. The entity then acted in the capacities as the storekeeper, in those activities in what is now Toledo, Ohio. In the name then Thomas Cowen (the son changed it to “an”). The entity was helpful in the greater portion but, with oppressions from combined interests, there were brought destructive forces into the experience.

25. And thus the continued innate desire for making changes in activities through the earth.

26. Follow that indicated if the entity would find the better conditions for self and for leaving the earth a better place because of its having been in same.

27. We are through with this Reading.

R1. 7/9/44 Mother’s letter: “[5249]‘s reading is strange in many ways. He has excelled in ancient history from 4th grade on, majoring in it at college, and had expected to take up archaeology when the war is over, also on account of his eyes. Several have read his reading, and cannot imagine him getting ‘too big for his breeches’. He is too much the other way. His classmates called him queer because he never talked or went to parties; has always preferred the laboring class and to labor himself, rather than teach or an office position. As for ruling a wife, he will have to ‘dress up’ and find one, and I’d rather believe he would leave her, if he has to rule her; he left 2 jobs in Pearl Harbor as foreman rather than rule his helpers, etc.” [GD’s note: Sounds to me like a natural tendency for democratic attitude as a result of his Atlantean incarnation.]

R2. 1/5/45 Letter: ” …The life reading was very interesting, and I am sure Mr. Cayce has helped many people to a greater understanding of this field of inquiry in addition to the more material aspects of physical and mental orientation and well-being. I certainly send my best thoughts to Mr. Cayce, and I know that the best that is for him is now, his.”

R3. 1/7/48 GD’s note: “Report requested from [5249] and from his mother. Asked them to consider Case [641] whose Life Rdg. did not at first seem to fit. Also asked that they consider possibility of the 2 boys’ readings ([5249] and [5242]) being reversed; that is Case [5249] might be the reading for the other son, [5242]. In a study of the 2 cases, with correspondence, etc., it might be possible that there was a mistake in transcribing the readings, etc., on the part of the stenographer, due to the great stress at the time, and the number of readings piling up before being transcribed. Just a possibility not to be overlooked, considering that such a thing did happen once with 2 sisters (see Cases [1434] and [1489]). Also consider the fact that Case [5242] had his Life Rdg. on June 3, and [5249] did not have his until June 12. Perhaps the need of [5249] was greater, and his ‘vibrations’ were picked up first, even though ‘suggestion’ was given to him for the reading on [5242]. The more spiritual-minded (apparently) [5249], might have been given his first, under the opportunity presented in seeking one for [5242].”

B1. Born Ohio 10/26/19; res. Ohio; single; Navy Air Station; universal religion, no one sect or creed.

B2. 10/2/43 Mother’s letter: “A lady gave me your address and advised me to write to you about my son [5249]‘s eye trouble. Mrs. Jane Revere Burke [having had a Physical Rdg. for Case [2291] in 1940]…knows our search to find something to heal the son’s eyes; also knows both of us believe in the kind of healing you do, and also our belief that we would find help… At present my son [5249] is working in a Navy Air Station, Kaneohe, Hawaii; Army and Navy placed him 4-F eyes, so he went to Pearl Harbor to do his part. He was put at sandblasting boats; his eyes gave trouble and he was transferred to Kaneohe garage office and inspection of tires. He cannot read after dark, and he suffers very much from his inflamed eyes. We sent him calobar lenses. He signed up for 18 months, left here last January, and when the boys quit, they are required to wait weeks, given a dishonorable discharge, then they have to pay back the money the Navy used sending them over, 290, and their way home - about 300 to San Francisco. He will hitch-hike across the States, if he can quit when he gets the money to come; also 50 Island taxes. He makes 36 a week. He graduated from Boston University in 3 1/2 years, using his eyes a lot in studying and working his way. The M.D. eye doctors list his eye trouble as ‘Congenital Myopia, not curable’. He is rather unsettled as to his future work, what it should be, and what his next step should be. He reads and studies religious books and ancient history… Can you help him while he is in Hawaii? If he can stay 18 months, his way will be paid both ways. Or should he come away now? I have an order in for ‘There Is A River’ to read about your God gift. God bless you.”

B3. 10/11/43 Mother’s letter: “One of the boys returned from where my son [5249] is and thought he was about blind in his left eye.”

B4. 11/10/43 Mother’s letter: “In one of the statements in the book ‘There Is A River’, a reference is made to progressive myopic eyes as belonging to sensitive people in general. This boy [5249] always has been retiring, sensitive, ‘queer’ to his friends, but very brilliant intellectually in ancient history at the University and kindred subjects. After reading ‘There Is A River’ and the booklet on life readings, I have the feeling the life reading might be the better, as you do not mention such condition being helped. We were afraid he was going to be blind in the left eye. The atmosphere in Hawaii and the glare of the sun has made him sick at his stomach - eyestrain, even with calobar lenses, and he was going to try to come home at once, but found they have to wait for weeks for a boat and then the long trip across the U.S. I have, and he has, prayed much of the time, and I think his eyes are better. I found a psychic 2 weeks ago, who said help of a magnetic entity was helping the condition, adjusting the eyes to the sun. This psychic also said the condition was due to a past life carried over, even back as far as a mythological bird who never saw sunlight, lived in the west. That is rather awe-inspiring to one who has never thought about things in that light. Under these circumstances, I am sending for a life reading instead of a physical, as he has always seemed to have perfect health otherwise.”

B5. 11/11/43 Mother’s letter: “The two boys [5249] and [5242] and I have experimented, read and studied along such psychic ideas for years, although none of us are really psychic.”

B6. 11/20/43 Mother’s letter: “I hear from [5242] that his brother’s [5249] eyes are worse again, and he is afraid to try the trip home, as he gets sick on the train or bus and lost 14 lbs. going over to Pearl Harbor, from vomiting due to eyes…it may take both readings to straighten the boy out. I want the life reading for him, as his future is more certain.”

B7. 1/25/44 Mother’s letter: “I do not understand quite how two readings, physical and life, could be given on the same day and hour; as you mention in your literature, they are separate readings… He needs the physical reading badly because the doctors in Hawaii have given him a medical discharge on account of his eye condition. He wants to know what to do to help the condition and what his life work should be to fit the eye condition, if no help is available. He is at a standstill… We are having definite help from the spirit side of life, through prayer. Prayer is proving effectual. We are receiving description and confirmation by a medium every few weeks. I am anxious to know if Dr. Cayce picks this out in his reading for [5249]. I have full faith in the healing but feel it can be hastened with material help. This piece of prayer work is the most awe-inspiring beauty and technique one could ever dream about.”

B8. 1/44 Letter: “This request for a Physical Rdg. is in the nature of an emergency, since the doctors here have advised me to return to the mainland as soon as possible, and have thorough treatment for my eyes. I realize that Mr. Cayce must be swamped with equally sincere requests for [readings], and I certainly will be happy at any given, set date in the knowledge that matters do seek their mean level in time…”

B9. 5/13/44 Letter: “…send me a complete list of the society’s available publications…”

B10. 5/17/44 Questions submitted in addition to those at end of 5249-1: [GD’s note: Mr. [5249] also submitted questions and case history for his physical reading, which appointment was later cancelled when Mr. Cayce had to rest on Sundays. He chose to have the Life Rdg., rather than the Physical Rdg. on his other appointment, 8/12.]

“(1) What will be my main avenues of expression during this life? (2) In what locality of the U.S. are conditions best for my permanent home? (3) Is marriage advisable? (4) At what age? (5) What faults have I to overcome during this life? (6) What work is advisable for a build up to life and work? (7) Why have I always disliked and avoided convention as in modes of dress, neckties, and as regards positions and ‘jobs’ of influence or standing?”
