This psychic reading given by Edgar Cayce at the David E. Kahn home, 20 Woods Lane, Scarsdale, N.Y., this 2nd day of December, 1937, in accordance with request made by the aunt - Mrs. [903], Active Member of the Ass”n for Research & Enlightenment, Inc.

Born May 15, 1928, around 8 A. M., Greenwood, S.C. (though suggestion was for [1489] born 9/30/26). Time of Reading 11:10 to 11:45 A. M. Eastern Standard Time. …, S.C.

1. EC: [First paragraph left out of original copy.] Yes, we have the records here of that entity now called [1489]; this we have given before. These, as we find, are the interpretations that have been given for this entity, [1489], these ye have [under [1489]. EC proceeded with life reading, apparently for [1434] born 5/15/28].

2. In giving the interpretations as we find from the records here, we find in the present experience of this entity influences in urges from the astrological as well as from the material sojourns.

3. The astrological come as the innate urges, or those that arise from the spiritual or soul self; and the entity in the present is rather of a soulful nature. Or there are the inclinations for the astrological urges to surmount the urges arising from the material or earthly sojourns, if the developments and the trainings are in those directions; for the earthly sojourn urges, as we find, vary very much from the astrological aspects.

4. In the astrological we find Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, with Neptune as an affliction in the experiences from the astrological or the spiritual or soul urges.

5. Hence we find a demure disposition, yet a very LOVING nature; that makes for rote and routine in its associations, tempered by periods when anger may make for disturbing conditions - though with gentleness, kindness, the associations in those ways and manners may be subdued.

6. However, there must be those tendencies or trainings that there are not the hates or disappointments held as grudges against those that bring disappointments or disturbances in the experience of the entity.

7. Also from the Mercurian sojourn there arises a high mental influence, and a studious nature in the activities of the entity; yet these - with the afflictions in the Neptune influence - as the mysteries in the experiences of the entity - may cause unexpected thoughts or turns to be found at times in the experience of the entity, by those that would watch the development or be inclined to direct the activities of the entity in the material experiences.

8. Those things as pertain to music as of a subdued nature - though only the piano or such an instrument - would be a portion of the entity’s experience.

9. But the entity is more the home-builder; and, as is indicated from both the astrological and the earthly sojourns, an early marriage would be advisable for the entity; and not the attempt to make too great an experience upon its OWN, or to make for itself a career.

10. However, in teaching, or in those fields of nursing or teaching, should the entity choose these, may be found activities in which there may be the material as well as the mental successes; but not the great spiritual successes as may be had with the home and character building for those in the home for the entity.

11. These as we find are the latent and the manifested activities in and during the developing periods of the entity.

12. For the periods from the early age to the sixteenth to seventeenth year become the formative periods.

13. Hence those directions as indicated in which to keep the entity; not in career but rather the home; the mental efficiency, the music - especially of the piano; activities for sincerities without GRUDGES.

14. For the inclinations from the Martian influences are for anger to easily arise in the experiences when the entity is fraught in its activities, in the associations, in its determinations.

15. And it usually has its way, unless there is reason and love and care and precaution shown by those that direct the developing or formative periods.

16. As to the appearances in the earth and those that influence in the present, as we find:

17. Before this the entity was in the lands nigh unto those of the present nativity, when there were the first settlings in what is now known as Georgia; or during those periods when the Oglethorpes were active in the land.

18. The entity was BORN in the land, of that activity; hence knew of and was acquainted with the hardships (as generally thought or termed) of the early settlers in the land, and those activities that had to do with those periods.

19. For the entity then was among those early peoples that formed definite settlements, and storekeeping, and the groups or colonies for the training of the young and for the activities in the land.

20. During the experience the entity was a teacher, in the name then Alice Burgomaster.

21. In the experience the entity gained, yet the entity had definite experiences in which its activities and associations with those of the opposite sex became rather disappointing.

22. Hence there will be seen conflicts in the present experience in these directions, or the entity will be divided between two individuals in its likes and dislikes for very definite conditions.

23. DO NOT let such associations be governed by too material things. Know that the innate activity is for home building, and the greater development may be had in same. Hence the purposes for which the home is to be formed must be set in the spiritual life, rather than the purely material life.

24. We will find the associations in such will bring into the experience of the entity monies; not great wealth but rather the greater SOCIAL position; though such things are and should be secondary in the experience of the entity.

25. Before that we find the entity was in the earth during those periods when there were the rebuildings in the Holy Land, and the return of the children of promise to the Holy City.

26. The entity came with the second group of those peoples, with Ezra, with Ezekiel’s activity, and those periods later when Nehemiah made for the rebuildings of the wall, or the completions of those works begun under Zerubbabel.

27. The entity was among those of the household of what would be termed, or called then, a minor priest; but the entity’s activities during those periods made for a reestablishing much of the home order, the home life, AND the temple service; for its abilities were in those directions.

28. Yet the entity’s associations with those that were outside of its own peoples made for questions.

29. And the same associations in the present experience - that is, outside of its own religious influence or force - may make for questionings; dependent upon the advice or counsel or direction in those lines as to its CHOOSING of associations.

30. The name then was Judith, and the entity gained and lost and gained through those experiences; for when there were those contacts and those periods of association with the followers of Sanballat and those that resisted activities of the entity’s people, these brought periods of questioning, periods when there were those associations and activities that made for disturbings and resentments that must be in the very SOUL of the entity replaced with the fruits of the spirit - or spiritual thought and activity.

31. And the UNISON of the influences or forces must be more and more paramount in the material associations in the present.

32. Before that we find the entity was in the lands of the present nativity or sojourn in the present, during those periods when there were those peoples entering into the land now called the Yucatan - after leaving the Atlantean and Poseidon land.

33. The entity was among those peoples who journeyed to the farther West or North and West from the Yucatan land; and the entity there was a priestess, and of the children of the Law of One.

34. The joinings in activities there were for the attempts to establish with those peoples that had been a portion of the lost or strayed tribe, that came across from Lemuria; as well as with those that came from the lands of bondage by the Persians and those that later were called the Indo-Chinans - or those peoples from the mountain who raided the Indian land.

35. There the entity aided in establishing a new unison of activity, in what would now be called the Arizona land.

36. There the entity may in the present experience find its companion or associations for the greater activity in the present experience; and those things that pertain to that land or the western land will have, do have, an influence and a CALL as it were latent within the entity’s experiences.

37. Then, as to the abilities of the entity in the present, and that to which it may attain, and how:

38. As has been indicated, much depends upon the manner of direction or training during those periods preceding its seventeenth - sixteenth to seventeenth year of sojourn in the present experience.

39. If outside fields of service are chosen, either nursing or teaching.

40. But the greater activity, the greater abilities may be shown in the home building.

41. Hence new fields of service, new fields of activity, new lines of thought as related to home, community, or the social buildings, will be a portion of the entity’s experience; and through same the greater activities and services may be had.

42. Doing these, then, the entity may develop to its greater influence and force in the present experience.

44. (Q) Why did the life reading given on Aug. 28th, 1937 [1489-1], through this channel for [1489], [1434]‘s sister, seem to fit [1434] and not apply to [1489] at all? (A) It was given for [1489], not [1434].

45. (Q) Please explain how and why the wrong focus was set in attempting to get this reading before? (A) There was no wrong focus; it was only taken from that given!

R2. 12/9/37 GD’s letter to [1434]‘s mother [2511]: ”…I’m dumbfounded that I should have made such a mistake as to type off [1489]‘s name on the first reading, instead of [1434]‘s as it should have been. It was a terrible mistake, and I’m so thankful it happened in your case instead of a stranger’s. Please overlook it, won’t you? and I’ll certainly be more careful in the future so as not to repeat the same error. You see, we had both names, birth dates, etc., right together, and in trying to hurry I just didn’t notice. It never pays me to HURRY, for I always make mistakes when I do.

“Both readings seem quite detailed, and indicate that your two daughters certainly have worth while experiences ahead. Also your part in the scheme is most important, naturally - but I’m sure you’re equal to it; else you would not have been given such talented daughters.

“With kind regards, and hoping you will not judge my general capabilities by my mistake in this case - for I assure you such a thing has never happened before (and I hope will never again)…” Gladys assumed she had made a mistake because of [903]‘s insistence].

R6. 3/25/58 [1434]‘s letter to GD: ”…Upon my aunt, [903]‘s suggestion, I am writing to ask you to please play detective for my sister and me.

“In 1937, [903] requested that both my sister, [1489] and I receive readings. BOTH of the readings ([1489] given on August 28th, 1937, from Virginia Beach, AND [1434] given on December 2, 1937, from Scarsdale) arrived with my sister’s name and birth date ([1489] September 30, 1926, Greenwood, S.C.)

“Based upon our nine and eleven-year-old personalities AT THE TIME, Aunt [903] and Mother [2511] assumed there must have been a typographical error - and attributed [1489] to me (nee

“In recent years, however, our maturing personalities seem to have changed greatly from our childhood selves - and at this point we have no idea which readings belong to whom? (Actually, I can see both of us in both the readings!)

“Could you possibly, Miss Davis, check your records to find any clue as to the missing identity?

“Both [1489] and I would greatly appreciate any information you could give us in order to eliminate doubt over the readings.

“To have been fortunate enough to have had the readings - and then not to be able to utilize them would be too tantalizing indeed!

“Thank you in advance…”

R7. 3/29/58 GD’s reply to [1434]: ”…Under separate cover, as soon as duplication can be made, I am sending to you a copy of both life readings, with background material and correspondence typed in date sequence. Thus you and [1489] can be your own detective.

“Personally, I never did feel that a mistake was made, but [903] was so positive about the first one being your reading that I had to admit the possibility of an error. …I still feel that the first one was given for [1489] and the last one for you. I guess we’ll never know unless something sensational happens to one of you to verify which is which. Even now it seems to me that the readings are very similar with the exception of a few references to vocation. If you and [1489] come to any conclusions after you study the copies being sent, we would certainly like to hear from you. We’d like very much, in any case, to hear from each of you as to just how your life has developed, whether you both have married, whether you either one or both have had a career, etc., etc. If we had such data we might be able to figure better which belongs to which. As you know, we never knew either of you personally, so it is hard to make a comparison.

“It was good to hear from you…”

R8. 4/1/58 GD’s letter to [1434]: ”…Just a note to enclose with the copies of your readings which I promised you. I hope a study of these will help to clarify the puzzle about who is who.

“A couple of things occurred to me since I wrote you last week, which may or may not be of help to you:

“First, you will notice that in the life reading 1434-1, the name given for the incarnation just previous to this present one was Alice. Now this is almost identical to your present name, and this fact is significant in that we have found in working with all the thousands of life readings that VERY OFTEN the name carried in the present incarnation (either the first name or the last or sometimes BOTH) is the very same or very similar to the name in an incarnation just previous! This occurs SO frequently in so MANY cases that it seems at least noteworthy.

“Another possibility which might be helpful to you in your attempts to solve this mystery is the utilization of some of the methods available for analysis of personality traits. For instance, you and [1489] might both take an aptitude test for vocational guidance - and then compare the results of this objective test with the two readings. Or you might both have an analysis made of your two handwritings. I understand that handwriting analysis is now acknowledged as legal evidence in courts of law, so it no longer falls in the category of ‘quackery’. Perhaps you could find a good, accredited analyst through your local Police Department?

“If I think of anything else which might throw some light on your search, I will surely let you know. Meanwhile, do keep us posted on developments as they occur. Of course we are interested in this whole matter personally, as well as it comprises more valuable evidence for our files on the readings as a whole…”

R9. 5/7/58 Mrs. [1434]‘s letter: “How very cooperative you have been - and we do appreciate your special attention. [903] and I spent a long time going over the two readings [[1434] and [1489]], fluctuating back and forth - and at one point we even thought that BOTH readings were [1434]! [903] has promised that if Hugh Lynn has any spare time while he’s in N.Y., that she’ll arrange for him to go over these readings with me. Perhaps he’ll have an insight which we’ve missed. Incidentally, [1489]‘s middle name on her birth certificate is [1434] … [my first name]. After I was born, she simply retained [1489] and I was [1434].

“[1489] and her husband […] who lives in …, Okla. and have two little girls and a baby boy will meet my husband […] and me in Atlantic City the end of this month for a business convention. I can assure you that we’ll find several hours to pour over the readings.

”[…] and I have a little girl 6, and a small boy, 4.

“[1489] has been quite active in her husband’s businesses as well as doing some professional fashion modeling on her own.

“I have done some professional interior decorating.

“As you say, we may never know who is who or which is which unless something ‘sensational’ happens. I’ll surely write if any new insights reveal her/my former identity.”

R10. 8/1/60 Mrs. [1434]‘s letter: “I have forwarded your recent letter [7/8/60 See under 2791-1 Reports] concerning research on the early American activities to [1489].

“At this date, however, I can tell you that neither of us has ever done research on Betsy Anne Wethers or Alice Burgomaster.

“I can’t promise you to run right out and dig up some information; but if the opportunity presents itself, we’ll surely write you anything we may learn.”

B1. 9/4/37 Letter from Mrs. [189]: ”…In reference the [1489] reading, Mrs. [903] telephoned me when it arrived and was so disappointed because it did not fit [1489] in any way. It analyzed [1434], the younger child, to a dot. Is a thing of that kind possible? It should not be so, but I do hope our research will find the real reason for a thing of this kind…”

B2. 9/8/37 EC’s reply to Mrs. [189]: ”…As for the [1489] reading, I do not think that is wrong, - though it may be as they see it now…again who asked for the reading, who sponsored same, all of these things must be taken into consideration, I am sure. …I believe that the child’s [1489]‘s reading is right and time will prove that it is true…”

B3. Explanation re readings of [2511]‘s daughters, [1489] (oldest) and [1434] (youngest): The first reading given, 1489-1 was given for the oldest daughter [1489]. However, the aunt [903] insisted the reading described the younger daughter [1434], not [1489] and suggested that a mistake must have been made. Because of the aunt’s insistence, Gladys assumed she had made a mistake. When the second reading was taken, the suggestion was given for [1489] rather than the younger daughter [1434]. Edgar Cayce said in trance that he had given the records of [1489], and then continued with the reading apparently for [1434], the youngest daughter. To date there has been some confusion as to which reading was given for which daughter.
