This psychic reading given by Edgar Cayce at his home on Arctic Crescent, Virginia Beach, Va., this 17th day of January, 1933, in accordance with request made by his son […] and by Edgar Cayce himself.
[Edgar Cayce; Gertrude Cayce, Conductor; Gladys Davis, Steno. Mildred Davis and L. B. Cayce.]
Time of Reading 11:30 to 11:40 A. M. Eastern Standard Time. …, Ill. (Physical Suggestion)
-
EC: Yes, we have those impressions and those conditions that disturb this body, [539]; these we have had before.
-
As we have given, the body well understands much of the disturbing forces in the physical functioning of the body, and - as many an individual - makes better applications and suggestions for others than for self.
-
That there is a disturbance in the physical functioning of the body that causes a form of anemia (though the body appears in a robust condition), the CIRCULATION is so impaired by the attempts to meet the needs OF a large body; and necessitating the flow of blood - under the existent conditions - in a much more EFFECTIVE manner than ordinarily, the EXTREMITIES - especially - suffer.
-
The taking of properties [Kofron tablets?] that would aid in creating within those portions of the system the arising of an excess of the red blood cell, and there continuing to be the lack of the elements in the hormones of the hemoglobin to carry that proper and necessary element for the corpuscle itself to be of the normal size, constituent and activity, has ONLY CLOGGED the system rather than AIDING the system.
-
Thus, a very slow process, to be sure, but - as we find, were there added those elements in the iodines - or in Atomidine, as given [in 539-3 on 10/21/32] that would aid the glands of the system to the stimuli of secretions, so that those properties necessary may be created to SUPPLY the hemoglobin - and SUPPLY the corpuscle body itself that element, that constituent FOR its activity, then we may confidently expect - and will find - that there will be the gradual increase in the circulation. Then the necessity of CLOGGING the system, either with foods or with properties, as to make divisions and thus calling on the structural portions of the system - and the leucocyte or the warriors in the system - to perform the functioning of making those divisions necessary in the system, will become less and less; so that the activities of the general system will be aided, thus reducing this tendency of the heaviness in the spleen, the fluttering condition of the heart, this deadness in the extremities - as in feet, limbs, hands, head, neck at times; and making for a more NORMAL condition for the system.
-
We will find also that the plain Radio-Active Appliance, used by the body in aiding the vibrations for the circulation to the extremities, will be MOST helpful, most beneficial. To this PARTICULAR body, as we would find, for this to be used for twenty to thirty minutes about TWICE each day would be more effective than to be used for an hour or an hour and a half at ONE period in the day. Each time attach to the opposite sides of body; that is, to the inside of wrist, inside of ankle, on opposite sides of body - but attach the anode first to the wrist at each time.
-
Do this.
-
Be mindful that the diet is kept so that the eliminations are somewhat above normal and more alkalin than acid.
-
Ready for questions.
-
We are through for the present.

R1. 1/18/33 EC’s letter to Dr. [539]‘s son:
I hardly know how to express my appreciation of your writing me as you did on the 4th. Seemingly, I have been negligent in answering and have allowed much time to elapse when possibly that factor should have been eliminated as far as possible. I do not mean to give excuses, for we find excuses being the trouble from the very beginning. But I was unable, through cold and distress physically, to undertake much information. Today I am, however, sending a letter with some information that was gotten for Dr. [539]. I am hoping that he may find it interesting enough, and of enough import, to tell each one of you about it and find in it something that will be very helpful, relieving much of this strain under which he is and has been laboring, also relieving much of the anxiety that I am sure has been in the minds and hearts of each and every one of the family. WE can only hope. From our past experiences, more often than otherwise these suggestions have proven to be most helpful. I trust he finds it the same.
For some time I have been hoping to come West, or to be in your part of the country and to meet and know each of you personally. Thus far it seems that things have been against me. At the time I wanted to go, early in the fall, it was not convenient for some of those who wished to be with me. Just recently I had a wire requesting that I come at once to Chicago, but I was physically unfit for undertaking such a trip; consequently it had to be delayed again. Let’s hope, though, that sometime in the near future this may be plausible and possible.
I will be very anxious, […], to know just how YOU see the response that the Doctor makes to carrying out these suggestions. By this I do not mean we want to even think of anything underhand, or writing behind his back or anything of the kind, but I know and realize that no two of us are able to see any circumstance in exactly the same light. No one can look through the other fellow’s eyes. I will appreciate it if you will from time to time drop me a line and let me know just how the Doctor IS getting along. Please know this: At ANY time it may be even possible that I MIGHT be of help, don’t hesitate to call on me. While at this present time the circumstances have caused considerable delay, it isn’t always like that - and I hope the next time, or should it arise (while I hope not for this), that I may be able to respond immediately.
R2. 1/27/33 [539]‘s letter to EC:
My dear Friend,
Your letter and supplementary reading have been received several days ago. As usual you come forward by rendering a service to your fellow men. Your letter is a source of enthusiasm and strength. Every time I read it, I find myself uplifted and helped. I am very much interested in what you say about the “Atomidine”. I have been unable to secure any from our local supply stations, but I have ordered some from the makers. But, up to now have not received the same, nor have I any acknowledgement of the order…
I wish to thank you again and again for the additional reading and the help which it promises to bring to my experience. It has been somewhat difficult for me to get about and to do any work satisfactorily to myself. For instance, I have a confinement case on right now, but it requires a tremendous determination to force myself to take care of it. Your reading is quite remarkable in describing the conditions of my body. There is no doubt that these situations are a sort of a test given that we might prove to ourselves the truth of the convictions which we have discovered through our studies. It is a mode of self-examination. It is a ‘running a race’ as you express it…
Every one of your lessons is a gem. It seems to me that there is a splendid material of a basis of a book to be published by you.
R3. 2/1/33 [539]‘s letter to EC: “No doubt you recognize the handwriting of Mrs. [2110]. My physical condition is not ‘hot’ as yet. In fact, I have found it desirable to remain at home. My hands are not able to hold the pen well enough to do the work, so I have asked Mrs. [2110] to do this for me, which she is very happy to do.”
R4. 2/28/33 [539]‘s letter to EC [First part dealing with some of his patients who had obtained readings]:
Now, a word about myself and the questions that you are asking. Perhaps, it would be well to refresh the memory of a few of the things that have taken place within the last few months. May, the third, nineteen thirty-two, is the date on which you gave me a physical suggestion. No doubt, you have a copy of that in your files. On October third, nineteen thirty-two, you served as a channel for a life reading suggestion. In the fifth paragraph is a statement about planetary influences. These influences would become active in the middle of October. Maybe, that by referring to this, you could tell me whether they have any reference to my present experiences. On the 21st day of October, nineteen thirty-two, you served as a channel for physical suggestions for my benefit, and again so on the 17th of January, nineteen thirty-three. In the reading of the 21st day of October, there was mentioned a number of physical means to be used. One of them was the use of the Carbon Ash to be followed by the Ultra Violet ray treatment. Here, you also mentioned Atomidine, but this as you will see, by referent to your file, was left a little ambiguous. It says, ‘this you will take ten drops each week for three to five weeks’. Of course, what was meant there, was ten drops a day for three to five weeks. [GD’s note: I disagree. He read the literature on Atomidine which gave larger doses than the rdgs.] I procured the Atomidine about the middle of January and have been taking it daily. In fact, several times a day. I have also been very faithful with the plain radio active appliance in using it twice a day according to the directions. Now, a few words more for the purpose of describing the condition according to the medical viewpoint. I did go to a friend of mine who is well equipt with laboratory facilities so that blood and physical examinations could be followed. The principle findings are; first, a deficiency in the secretion of hydrochloric acid in the stomach; second, a deficiency in both the hemoglobin, and the number of red cells in conformity of what in medical language is called Pernicious Anemia. Third, an affection in the lateral tracts of the spinal cord due to improper nourishment through the defective blood producing an ataxic walk with a sort of semi-paralysis in the sensation of hands, feet and other parts of the body. I have reduced about ten pounds in weight and am receiving liver therapy according to the findings that this increases the blood count and improves the blood stream. My blood count has gone up from 4,300,000 to 5,200,000 and the hemoglobin from 76% to 87%. My nerve findings, however, have not improved. My fingers and feet are still decidedly offish. I’m reminded of the letter which your Miss Mildred Davis wrote to me the other day. She referred to my statement about smiling more and how it has been of some help to her in meeting difficult situations. There is plenty of opportunity of applying this principle to myself.
One reason why I have gone into these details is to show you that I am very conscientious in following the orders given. The fourth paragraph of your physical reading given on the 17th of January speaks of “the taking of properties that would aid in creating within those portions of the system the arising of an excess of the red blood cells, and there continuing to be the lack of the elements of hormones of the hemoglobin to carry that proper and necessary element for the corpuscles itself to be of the normal size, constituent and activity, has only clogged the system rather than aiding the system”. I take it that the use of Atomidine is the thing to do and I’m doing that, taking some every day. What do you recommend? I am not impatient, but on the other hand, I would like to be able to follow my work, which, at the present is very difficult.
R5. 3/17/33 EC’s letter [first part having to do with Dr. [539]‘s patients who had obtained readings]:
Now, regarding yourself: From the readings (as I’m sure you have noted) we find, if we accept that given, that there are many influences in the experience of every individual of which he is not conscious in his physical and mental being. Such was indicated in the Life Reading, as to astrological influences in your life. It requires study and analysis to arrive at any concrete understanding of what such refers to. More often we are prone to say, “Well, it’s a lot of hokum” instead of saying that possibly it does wield an influence. The idea is, what do we do about it? If we consider for a moment the type of suggestion given at the time, too, we might say to counteract such an astrological influence, we find that it consists of what may be properly termed - I am sure - elementals. Or, as indicated, the carbon ash with the use of the violet ray; with the use of the Atomidine, which is supposed to alter the factors of the elements in the system producing an impulse for an activity in the glands that have been or are more or less out of order as to their proper distribution of that assimilated in the system. The carbon ash and the violet ray, of course, being elementals, as I suggested, or a very low form of electrical vibration which stimulates better activity for the very distribution of that assimilated for the system through the activity of the glands themselves. This combination (the ash, the low electrical vibrations both from the Radio-Active Appliance and the ultra violet ray) should enable your system to counteract the tendency for lack of proper distribution in circulation. I hope you have continued to find satisfactory results from the use of these suggestions. As no doubt you recognize, when we deal with the elementals for the reconstruction, readjustment or recoordination of a body, it is very much slower than if we were using more drastic measures. But very much safer, and very much more sure, provided we are creating the proper balance. Again we have to return to our first premise and say, “Does the information (or reading) know what it is talking about?”
I believe that the continued use of the ash, the violet ray and the Radio-Active, as well as the Atomidine, should be the necessary factor to create or bring about a much better condition.
I regret this long delay in getting a letter to you, but I hope you haven’t lost patience nor considered me very negligent in replying to those things that I know are very much worth while in your own personal experience.
I am still hoping the day is not so far distant when I may have the opportunity to sit down with you personally and talk over these things. Sometimes I wonder just how long it would take us to go over all the things we have in common. I’m thinking it WOULD be days. But the time is coming! That I feel very sure.
The recent general condition throughout the country has been very hard on us, especially as it has prevented those whom we might have helped from making their little contribution to our work. And inasmuch as we have never been in the position of going other than just from day to day, at times we have been placed in a little bit embarrassing position. All these things, if we are working right, will adjust themselves. I am reminded that even our Master must have been embarrassed when he was asked for His tribute money and had to send one of His disciples to catch a fish to obtain it! So, we all have our ins and outs, ups and downs.
We are most happy to have your expression of delight and appreciation for the efforts of the Norfolk Study Group in compiling the lessons. This is a phase of the work the readings have insisted for twenty-five years should be begun. But it is real work. For, as the readings have always insisted, it is first to the individual. And it must be individual self-development. The lessons, the truths, must not only be applicable in the lives of individuals as tenets but must be real, living; something that finds a response to that unseen influence within each and every soul; something that takes hold of the very spirit of things. Inasmuch as we may only see the fruits of the Spirit, in love, hope, fellowship, self-denial, brotherly love, mercy, peace and the like, we must live them; not just say it in words. The individuals of the group, possibly from being able to keep in touch with the readings from week to week, have caught the spirit of the work. For this I am very thankful, and happy. Not that we haven’t had some falling away; for it has been very much as the parable of the sower. Some seed fall on the roadside, some on stony ground, some among thorns and briars. Some fall on good ground.
When the love of God is a thing that grows, it doesn’t spring up all at once except in very exceptional or unusual cases. In other words, “all things unto all men.”
We will be very happy to hear from you. I trust this finds not only you but every other member of the family well, feeling the need of standing strong in the faith. For, unless we realize that we need to do that, I do not believe we arrive at the knowledge that His presence abides with us. For, it is here - always has been; we only blind ourselves by these many things we see, know and hear that become influences in our lives; and we follow off after other gods, rather than the ONE.
With all good wishes and love, I am
Sincerely, EC:GD
R6. 3/22/33 Dr. [539]‘s reply: I am very pleased with your reiterating the different modes of conduct for one to adhere to. I am quite sure that I am living up to all of them in addition to such measures as special diet and liver extract therapy. I remember stating in my last letter, the name of the label that medical science appends to my condition. I’m also keenly alert to the specific points in which your suggestions differ from those of the others. Namely; that through the use of the iodine, certain obstructions to the circulation would be removed and through that, the sense of numbness, constrictions, and weakness be eliminated, while according to the medical viewpoint, the thing is to bring back the blood stream to its normal proportion between haemoglobine and the number of red corpuscles per C.M.M. There is, in my mind, the idea that the cause of the whole situation dates back to a period of worry over a number of mundane situations very accurately described in your first reading. It’s a problem of overcoming and I frequently keep in mind a statement “to him, that overcometh will I give strength”. It often seems though, the strength should be more in evidence in order to feel oneself able to overcome. Still, I feel that to take the quotation at its face value is the safest course to pursue.
I hardly need assure you that I am grateful for every form of help that may come my way even though I feel that the only proper thing to do is to look to the help from within, the God within, who made heaven and earth. The discipline needed is a severe one, because under the stress of working with strain and difficulty, one is apt to become irritable and difficult to get along with.
R7. 4/1/33 Dr. [539]‘s letter: “I am continuing to follow the rdg. suggestions. At times it requires quite an effort to keep myself going.”
R8. 6/10/33 Dr. [539]‘s letter to EC: “I am certainly glad to learn of your continued good health and vigor. My own condition is perhaps somewhat improved, but requires continual constructive attention.”
R9. 6/29/33 Dr. [539]‘s letter: I frequently look over your reading for me dated May, 1932. [539-1] You remember I had marked it and sent it back to you for further elucidation. I must admit that some of it in its wording is still a little obscure, while other parts of it is grasped rather intuitionally than intellectually. There is such a difference between presentation of this type of information and from the one that we have grown accustomed to as being more understandable.
It does require a patient inner grasp of fundamentals to correlate the two. I may perhaps make this clearer to you by stating the following:
On Jan. 26th of this year, I consulted a fellow Physician for the purposes of arriving at a better understanding of my physical condition, for while in your Reading you stated “that the disturbing factors in the physical forces were known and also that as may be of aid in correcting same to a great extent”, yet I found myself not aware of that knowledge, not having the power as Burns puts it, to “see myself as others see us”. The information given you see is a little ambiguous, because it did not state as to who it was that these things were known to.
It does appear that it was good judgement on my part to consult a fellow Physician, because through him I became acquainted with at least some of the disturbing factors, and that as may be of aid in correcting same to a great extent.
Since January I have been steadily improving, but there is still so much to be desired in order to make me fit for any service in my profession, that it keeps me praying without ceasing as the “good Book” puts it. I had applied the Battery faithfully and also had been very faithful taking the Atomidine. Under a special liver diet and liver extract therapy, my blood count has gone up to a desired normalcy and in hemoglobines. I have had however a destructive action occur to certain parts of the nervous system in the spinal cord that is still very troublesome, and which will require a regeneration or resurrection. [Next paragraph used in reporting on son’s rdg. 2155-4]
Both Mrs. [2110] and I have the highest regard for you all and feel that we are indebted to you more than we can express, for your loving good-will, advice and co-operation.
R10. 1/16/34 Letter [first part see under 2155-4 Reports]: Personally I have been having considerable trouble physically in that the numbness in the hands and feet is such a constant companion which, however, does not promote a happy familiarity because of continuous acquaintance. My blood stream, as far as the usual mode of approach by medical science is concerned, is up to standard; but the resurrection required by my nervous system is still a constant reminder of error somewhere. I have not used the battery that you were so kind to send to me for quite a while. I have had the impulse to do so, although to be really candid, I am not able to say that I have noticed any help from it. If you have any suggestions to make in regard to this, I should certainly be very glad to hear them.
R11. 3/9/34 Dr. [539]‘s letter: “I thank you for your statement that you would like to have an opportunity to see whether there might be some suggestion and information coming relative to my problem, to be gained through you in the trance state. Any time that you will set for that purpose will meet with my cooperation to the best of my ability.”
R12. 4/22/34 Letter from Dr. [539]:
Here are a few questions:
Is the diagnosis of my present condition, made according to accepted medical science and termed “Lateral Sclerosis of the chord to to Pernicious Anemia” correct? even tho it is a judgement based upon appearances.
What benefit is there to come from using the usual remedies advised for this condition, i.e., Liver Extract, Liver in the Diet, high vitamin substances, such as yeast and the use of goat lymph intra-muscular.
