This psychic reading given by Edgar Cayce at his home on Arctic Crescent, Virginia Beach, Va., this 24th day of April, 1934, in accordance with request made by the self - Dr. [539], Active Member of the Ass”n for Research & Enlightenment, Inc.
[Edgar Cayce; Gertrude Cayce, Conductor; Gladys Davis, Steno. Mildred Davis and L. B. Cayce.]
Time of Reading 3:45 to 3:55 P. M. Eastern Standard Time. …, Ill. (Physical Suggestion)
-
EC: Yes, we have the body, [539]; this we have had before.
-
Some changes since last we had same. There has been some building up of the resistances in the forces of the body. Other conditions are somewhat improved in the general manner.
-
As we find in the present, those things in the system are very beneficial that tend to build up a higher blood pressure, and that will increase the activity in creating a greater blood count.
-
Those tendencies for irritation along the cord, or that suppression of nerve activity in the extremities by these tendencies for the disconnection in ganglia along portions of the cerebro-spinal system, would be materially aided by the general massage - preferably given in the NEUROPATHIC manner; beginning from the solar plexus area, working downward and to the extremities; or the solar plexus area and working towards the extremities in the upper portion of the body. These given every day or every other day would be most helpful.
-
We would find also that the use of the diathermy treatment in specific centers would aid in stimulating the circulation that has been created by the increase in the pressure in the blood, as well as in the blood count itself; as those centers opposite the 4th lumbar, those opposite the adrenals, those in the solar plexus area both front and back, or the solar plexus in the dorsal and the umbilicii plexus in the front; the 4th dorsal and the 2nd and 3rd cervical, see? These at focal points, where there would be the heating or equalizing of those plexuses.
-
Do that.
-
We are through with this Reading.

R1. 4/26/34 EC’s letter:
Dear Dr. [539]:-
The information gotten respecting your condition was sent to you. I hope it will at least be somewhat enlightening and interesting to you. While there was not the opportunity at the end of the reading to ask the questions we were so anxious for you to make and send us, it was felt by all present that they WERE answered even before there was an opportunity to present them. WHY such things happen, we don’t know.
As to the use of the diathermy in such conditions, I do not know. Peculiarly enough, I noticed only last night in the May copy of Readers Digest an article entitled “Young Doctor Heat” which tells of the Elliot machine and also of the diathermy treatment used for sclerosis by Dr. William Schmidt of Philadelphia with remarkable results. You may have heard of this. If you haven’t, see that article. It is quite interesting.
I am most anxious about you. I know all these things sound so unreasonable to so many people. But we are having some wonderful reports, Doctor, from those who are following the reading suggestions in regard to the physical, mental and spiritual affairs of individuals. At the same time we have many things that really do disturb us, and we wonder what it is all about. But I am certainly hoping it will be possible for you to give this information a real try. How or why it hasn’t been presented before, I don’t know. Possibly it wasn’t the time. Possibly it was necessary that there be more experimentation with that mode of treatment, or with that particular type of condition, before it could be presented in this way. Why that I should happen just afterwards to run across such an article, I don’t know. But here’s hoping and praying that you will find in this information something that will give you the opportunity to be rid of that condition disturbing you at this time.
Of course, if at all possible, judging from the experiences we have had, I believe it would be very well for the whole line of treatment suggested to be followed. If you do not have a good neuropath there, perhaps Mrs. [2110] or someone in your family could give you that type of massage, in the manner suggested in the reading; and if you need further details don’t hesitate to say so. We have several neuropaths over the country who are following the reading directions with marvelous results.
Please let us hear from you. Know that we have felt and do feel very close to you, and we have been and are quite anxious about you.
Appreciating your letter and trusting we may indeed in some manner be of assistance, I am Sincerely, EC:GD
R2. 5/2/34 Dr. [539]‘s letter:
Mr. Edgar Cayce, Virginia Beach, Va.
Dear friend:
I wish to thank you for both your letter and the information which you received thru your special talent and training.
I also wish to express my appreciation for your interest in me. After all is said and done, it is just such an interest in each other that keeps us “Children of the Almighty” in a good frame of mind. This is of course still increased, this good frame of mind, if we take that interest in the Father as a source of all that we are, ever have been, or will become.
I see that I will have to make some special effort and take a run over to see you and yours sometime in the future. It is a case of “Mahomet going to the Mountain,” if the mountain does not go to Mahomet. I had a number of friends, one in particular while I was attending college in Chicago, who gave evidence of a capacity for touching the hidden realm. I have not heard from him for a good many years, but the memory of my contact with him is still very happy and fresh.
I was very much impressed with your personal response to the situation which arose in connection with your work at New York, where you contacted a medium engaged in a similar line of work as yours. Your response, as Mrs. [2110] told me of having read in your letter, was something to the effect that you do not feel inclined to get your information from any guide or guides, but prefer to endeavor to contact the higher sources, and also feel that every individual has, and should exercise the same privilege. I believe this teaching to be thoroughly sound and scientific. To obey such a principle implies being at all times in touch with the One Source of all information, even though the medium thru which that information should come may seem otherwise. In other words, we are not to question or lay down the specific mode in which information is to come.
I wish, however, that at least my first question, the question as to the diagnosis which I asked, had been answered. Not that my own mode of thinking is not clear on that point, but I would have liked to have had the expression coming thru you on that same subject. I read that article on Doctor Heat by DeKruiff. This author as you probably know has written a great many books on related subjects, many referring to medicine and some specific fields as applying to agriculture and the diseases of animals. Unfortunately, in my own opinion at least, his writings seem a little sensational, and he allows his imagination to embellish a little so as to make his writings interesting to the public. As to the use of Diathermy in Sclerosis mentioned in the article that you spoke of and that appeared in the “Reader’s Digest,” it fails to make it clear that the Sclerosis referred to is one due to the effects of syphilis. In fact, it is not anything new, because investigators have been experimenting with this by increasing the heat in the human body to 105 and 108 degrees, with the idea in mind that such a temperature would destroy the hidden germ life which caused the hardening in nerve and brain tissue - scientifically called General Paresis. The use of diathermy for the type of nerve lesion that has manifested itself in me would not be so advisable because it is easily possible to add damage to already weakened nerve cells. I am now using heat, however, in the form of an electric heat plate which conforms to the shape of the spine, and my youngest son, gives me the massage. I am not quite clear as to what you mean by a Neuropath. I am quite sure that there is not anyone in … who works under such a title.
My own inclination is that the best and most effective mode lies in prayer or right thinking. I would appreciate if you would ask your groupe to take up my name in their contemplations. This opens a subject that I wanted to discuss with you for some time, and I trust that you will take no offense if my remarks seem not to coincide entirely with your mode of activity. I am sure you will take them in the same spirit of endeavoring to be right, as I am expressing them. It seems to me that in so many of your little cards and writings which you are sending out, that you are violating the law of scientific prayer. You say, “May there be this; We ask for such and such.” In other words, there is still a supplicatory type of approach in place of one of PRAISE and THANKFULNESS for the things already done. “We praise and thank Thee for expressing Yourself now in Your perfection,” implies an adherence to the specific directions of the Master Teacher who said, “All things what so-ever you ask and pray for, BELIEVE THAT YOU HAVE THEM and you shall receive them.” I am also reminded to think of St. Paul who advised his followers to express their wishes with thanksgiving and praise. It is the same thing here as in other modes of work. It is the little details that make for accuracy and finished end results. It seems to me that there is no compromise possible on this question. In fact, it becomes very easy “to ask amiss” unless one adheres thoroughly to such detail. Kindly give me your expressions on this when your time permits.
I enclose a small amount as a contribution to help meet your expenses, and show you a tangible way my appreciation for your interest and cooperation. Mrs. [2110] joins me in Love to you and yours, Sincerely, [539]
R3. 5/8/34 EC’s letter: Dear Dr. [539]:
I have yours of the 2nd and I certainly appreciate very much your taking the time to write me as you have. I am glad to know that you have found the information of interest. I thank you also for your comment on the author of the article in the Readers Digest. Of course, I knew nothing about the author and that we had had information several times before about the things that he wrote of made it of special interest to me, but as to how much the information and his comments were in accord, of course, was a different thing and it may be very much as you say, has little of a sound, scientific basis.
The experience with the medium was to us quite interesting not because of the fact that we feel that we have any better source or any better method, for as I understand from Mrs. Garrett, [Eileen Garrett] she is being investigated, possibly, by more scientific people that it has ever been my pleasure to even meet, and if her source of information is something that is satisfying to those scientists and physicians, why it must be a fact that she has a source that is worth while. [See report in 3/34 A.R.E. Bulletin, reprinted in 3/48 Bulletin.]
We have found the information has at times very radically disagreed with quite a number of people and people whose material training and possibly the results of their physical efforts would prompt anyone to believe that their considerations were worth while, yet we have found times, far more often than otherwise, I believe, that the information has been the more often correct.
I have never felt personally, that there was any excuse for mankind to accept a lesser authority if the higher authority was approachable, and I believe, if we are a portion of God that it is certainly possible for us to approach the highest, and it is our fault if we are satisfied with anything less than the highest.
I certainly am in hopes that the application of the heat for yourself will prove most helpful. Have you been able or have you looked up anything about the Elliott machine?
Neuropathy, as I understand it, Doctor, is a mode of treatment that is practiced by some. As to how scientific it is, I do not know; as to whether there are schools of this treatment or not, I know there are some. There is the Southern School of Neuropathy and I happen to know the lady who is at the head of that. [Dr. Elise L. Stone.] I believe the school, though, is in Chicago. It may be one of those fake schools, as considered by some. I do know, though, that there are some who get wonderful results. As I understand from the information, which may be as far wrong as anything else, the neuropath begins at certain centers where there is indication of a disturbance along the spine much in the same way and manner as the osteopath, except instead of using the structural portion as leverages for a deep or gentle massage, the neuropath follows rather the line of nerve centers through the system. For instance, beginning in the 8th and 9th dorsal, they would follow these along the exterior portion; of course it is an effective method to the superficial circulation more often than to the deeper circulation. Whether this is indicated in certain types of disorders, of course, you will know a great deal better Than I. But according to the information, it is less often that you find the deeper organs need the stimulation of such a massage than the superficial or the circulation at it goes back to its organs for oxizidation [oxidization?] and cleansing, and it is your outer circulation the more often disturbed; whether this is indicated in your case you will know, of course, a lot better than I, but I believe it will be quite possible for […] to be a great deal of benefit to you in making not only the applications of the heat, but of the general massage as may be followed along the portions of the body as has been indicated.
I thank you, too, very much for you discussion about the affirmations [[281] series]. You may be quite right. We have accepted that that has come for such, not altogether without question, for I am very sure the advice and counsel of those who have had a great deal of experience and ideas about such is worth a great deal to us. We are, as you know, primarily seeking to know what may be of the greater service to our fellow man, and it is, indeed, not a racket, in any form or matter that we are trying to press as being the last word in anything; but we are using what is presented to us in the information, and any advice and counsel such as you have given us and are able to give us from time to time is certainly accepted in that way and manner, for our best friends are those who tell us of our faults as well as our virtues, and those who do not accept such advise in this way and manner are, indeed, very poor prospects for anyone to rely on.
It is, indeed, thru, as you may, these little details for accuracy that will bring up to the full consciousness of His presence abiding with us day by day. I am in hopes that you will the more often offer your suggestions, and I am in hopes that you will feel more inclined to offer these suggestions from time to time, for it is accuracy that we seek, sincerity of purpose and a desire to be the more helpful to our fellow man, if possible. That the approach in the minds of this or that individual is wavered, of course, by their own training is expected, but the more accurate that we can be that will be above any question in any direction, the more help, no doubt, we can be.
I am sure the whole group will appreciate you desire to be remembered. This portion of the work has grown, as you may well expect, not only in the numbers of individuals who desire of be of aid in this direction, but enormously have the numbers grown that would seek aid through these channels, or who ask that their names be included, and our reports are certainly inclined to make one believe that the individuals feel they are getting results.
In your last paragraph you remarked that you were inclosing a contribution. For your own information rather than asking any be sent, find same inclosed, but I appreciate this very, very much.
Please give Mrs. [2110] and the rest our very best regards.
R4. 6/3/34 Wife [2110]‘s letter, after reporting on son’s case 2155-4:
“I try not to worry about Dr. [539], but I guess its pretty hard for one who for so many years has had the medical laws presented so forcefully and continually, that it is almost impossible for him to overcome this handicap. I presume there are times, too, that the conscious mind seems to accept what the subconscious does not. Anyway, God is, and there is no law or force that can oppose the law of good.”
R5. 11/11/37 Dr. [539]‘s note [clearly handwritten] from The Barclay Cottage, 400-16th St., Virginia Beach, Va:
“Mrs. [2110] and I stopped over in the anticipation to meet you in the flesh. It seems, however, that we must still content ourselves to know each other on the unseen side of things. [EC and family were in N.Y.] We must be on our way this morning. We drove up here from Hot Springs, Ark., and have enjoyed our experiences very much. The Barclay’s made us feel very much at home and told us many nice things about your activities.
“Well, goodbye. Regards from Mrs. [2110]. As ever your friend,” [539]
R6. 1/9/38 Wife [2110]‘s letter: “The doctors diagnosed Dr. [539]‘s condition as Pernicious Anemia and it handicapped him so that it has made it difficult for him to use his hands as he should, and of course consequently makes it difficult for him to hold things, and then it is sometimes hard for him to balance himself in standing or walking. This has existed about five years now. [She reported on son’s condition - see 2155-4]…
“Dear friend, I know you are sincere. I regret so much that we could not have met you. What can I say? Will you pray for us? What is holding us? How can I make you believe that I try so hard to do all that God would have me do? Do I ask amiss? I am going to open my heart to you. I feel if Dr. [539] would just open up and let Love reign, everything could be cleared up. He has such a fine mind and he does want to get close to God, but he seems to build a wall around himself
- well just as you described him as ‘Thunderbolt’ in a previous incarnation [539-2]. My life has been very unhappy, but I am sure he cannot consciously help it. If he would just let go and bring Peace in place of strife. Please tear this up and consider it the cry of a soul who needs help and trying to stay close to God.”

“He had not been well for a good many years and yet he carried on bravely - doing his best, altho at times hardly able. He had a cerebral hemorrhage one Sat. morning, followed in just one week by the fatal one.”
