This psychic reading given by Edgar Cayce at his office, 105th Street & Ocean, Virginia Beach, Va., this 9th day of July, 1931, in accordance with request made by self - Miss [543].

1. EC: Yes, we have the body here, [543] - this we have had before. Now, we find there are continued changes going on in the physical forces of the body.

2. As to the EFFECTIVENESS of the properties being administered, this may easily be seen from the reducing of the attacks; yet the effect same is producing upon the whole MENTAL and nervous system of the body is also apparent. [Medicine from Dr. Harry L. James, M.D., of Western Medical Corp., Chicago, Ill.]

3. As to the changes, or the alterations OF the vegetable compounds as are being given, the effect may NOT be given until there is known or seen the changes as will be MADE from time to time. WE would continue with the present applications until there is the satisfying of those upon whom the body is dependent for those administrations for the welfare OF the physical and mental being; yet we would be very careful that there is not added with these administrations ANY drug that becomes habit-FORMING, or that the body-physical becomes dependent upon same for its own responses, or in USING - rather let the hypnotics than those of the narcotics be used; though BOTH must be harmful if persisted in. Necessary that the changes in the physical forces be effective by a change in the reactions from the glands of the reproductive system, as has been seen. That which will produce in the body a tendency for suppression ALONE of the functioning of these glands cannot be expected TO be a permanent healing for the body. These must either be those that will not only suppress, but destroy or alter the activity OF the glands - see? Then, these may be expected to be helpful. Do that. Ready for questions.

4. (Q) How long should she take the medicine before it gives the desired effect? (A) That cannot be given as long as there are continued changes in the quantity, or the calibre, or kind OF properties - see? For what a body will do within themselves is a matter of their own will; while in THIS case the will is active by those administering same.

5. (Q) Will it obliterate the attacks entirely? (A) That depends upon what changes are made. As it is suppressing same, so there is not a narcotic used, it WILL! If it’s a hypnotic, it WILL relieve. If it is changed, or made to a narcotic, it will not!

Dear Mr. [1212]:

Thank you for your remittance. It has been properly credited to your account.

In your letter you ask me to inform you as to what I thought of your daughter’s progress.

In consideration of the fact that your daughter has been a sufferer of this disease for many years, and in spite of all the treatments she was receiving from so many different sources she still continued to have seventy-five or more of the attacks each month, I would say she is making decided progress in regaining her health, especially in view of the reports I have received.

In the last report I received from Miss Annie Cayce, this report being received upon July 1st, she stated that [543] was improving every minute, and the only thing that disturbed her was the fact that when she first arose in the morning she seemed somewhat dopey. Miss Cayce further states that when [543] moves about quite a bit and keeps her mind fully occupied, this dopey or drowsy appearance rapidly disappears, and she is also recovering from her occasional periods of depression and is at the present time very bright and cheery.

In view of these reports I would consider that she has been making excellent progress but, of course, I will not be satisfied with her condition until all her attacks have been brought completely under control and she appears to be absolutely normal in every respect. I wish to assure you at this time that I am going to do everything in my power to accomplish this.

R2. 7/11/31 Father [1212]‘s ltr.:

Dr. Harry L. James 137 West 62nd Street Chicago, Ill.

My Dear Dr. James:

I am enclosing a letter from our daughter who is at Virginia Beach, Va. please read carefully the portion of her letter, which I have marked.

From her letter evidently the medicine she is now taking causes her to be so drowsy and depressed, fearing it will have or cause her mind and reason to become dull, I decided best to inform you of the facts, as you may desire to make some change in her medicine, or some change in the dosage.

I called up Mr. Cayce, who cooperates with his sister, Miss Annie Cayce, at Virginia Beach, Va. (417-22nd St.) and was advised over the phone that they would keep her taking your treatment, for the present.

Without her knowledge of this letter, may I suggest you write Miss Cayce, if you desire any change, in taking your medicine to overcome this drowsiness that she complains of so much, at same time, such a letter that our daughter could read of course giving her all the encouragement that you can consistently, for we are anxious for her to continue to take your treatment. Thanking you in advance, I am

R3. 7/14/31 Father [1212]‘s ltr. to EC:

My Dear Mr. Cayce:

I am enclosing you a letter from Dr. James under date of July 10th which was written before he received my letter of July 11th, which I sent you a copy.

I assume that [543] being troubled with the dopey and drowsy feeling, is from the medicine she is taking, which is to hold down her attacks, may I suggest, that is, if you think proper, ask your sister Miss Annie Cayce to encourage [543] to be more active. [543] is very fond of assisting about the house and we would be glad if your sister would encourage and compliment her on her help. This I hope will meet with your views and your sister’s.

And we would be glad for her to assist, thereby getting her more interested in the home, giving her less time to think of how she is feeling and naturally overcome to a great extent the dopey and drowsy feeling.

R4. 8/4/31 See Miss [543]‘s Life Reading, 543-11, advising that the Passion Flower preparation cured her of epilepsy in her last incarnation as the half-sister of Pocahontas, daughter of Powhatan, and that it will cure her this time. Also indication was given that “indiscretion of youth” in her parents this time had a great deal to do with this affliction returning to her.

R5. 8/6/31 EC’s letter to Mr. [1212], her father:

Your letter of some days ago was received, with the letters enclosed from Dr. James. As you know, my suggestion was that Dr. James be given the opportunity to show just what he might be able to do with his remedies for Miss [543]‘s condition. This, I think, is nothing more than right and justice to everyone. No doubt Sister has acquainted you with the spells that Miss [543] had some few days ago. This was really rather alarming. It may be that was the turning point. Let’s hope so, and that Dr. James fully understands the case. No doubt, though, Miss [543] has sent you a copy of her life reading. This we ALL feel is rather unusual, VERY unusual in fact. I realize that very few people would say it was anything but “bunk”. Our experience thus far has not been that it is “bunk”, and I feel - that if the last quantity of medicine that Dr. James sent Miss [543] doesn’t prove to be the thing - it would at least be worth while for us to give the information obtained in this reading an opportunity. Don’t you think so? To be sure, I’ll be very anxious to know how you and the family react to this information. I hope it doesn’t sound too absurd to you. If it will prove to be what it seemingly is, we at least have a good opportunity to prove it in this individual case. If the other fails, may we have yours and Mrs. […]‘s permission to try this? It is her interest, of course, that we have at heart, and we know and realize your anxiety - but we want to be honest with ourselves and and each one trying to do anything for her welfare.

R6. 8/7/31 Mr. [1212]‘s letter:

My Dear Mr. Cayce:

Answering your letter of August 6th, will say that [543] phoned us last Tuesday night, that you had given her a life reading and would send it. Our last mail is in for the day and we have not received a copy. Evidently she overlooked it or it went astray. Just as soon as we receive a copy of the life reading, will write you again.

In the meantime please be assured, as advised you in our previous letter, it is our desire to have you really decide what is for the best, for we well know that you, and your Sister have the interest of [543], just the same, if she was one of your OWN family.

R7. 8/8/31 EC’s letter: I have yours of the 7th, and with enclosure, for which we thank you very much. I certainly do not want you to feel, Mr. [1212], that I am trying to run up a bill on you by having so many check readings. Miss [543] asked me yesterday if she might have another check reading. I first told her I thought she should send you her life reading and then let YOU and Mrs. […] decide as to whether it would be best. Then I told her that I was sure we should wait and give this last medicine from Dr. James time to work, as it would only be fair to him and to herself - but she still insists that she wants another check reading, which will be included in the next group tomorrow. I’ll see that you get a copy of this. I hope that you have received the life reading, and I’m anxious to know just how you and Mrs. […] react to that given concerning Miss [543].

I assure you that it is our desire to do the very best for Miss [543] that is possible, but I don’t want to do it with a great big expense to you that’s unnecessary.

R8. 8/11/31 Mr. [1212]‘s letter: Replying to your letter of 8th, (which I note was mailed on Aug. 10th), please do not think for a moment that we feel that it is your purpose to put us to any additional cost, for we know that you have our interest fully at heart, and I am glad that you decided to give [543] another check reading as she was so anxious for it, and you thought wise, that you make the check reading.

When we receive this check reading, we will write you in accordance with your request.

I assume from your letter that you want [543] for the present to continue using the medicine from Dr. James. I hope that the last medicine that he sent is better suited for [543]‘s trouble and she is improving.

Would also thank you to advise [543] to continue on Dr. James’ medicine, for the present, if this is your decision, for she wants to come home for a while and if you do not SPECIFY this she may want to discontinue taking it, which we fear would not do, especially while she is at home. While awaiting your valued reply, I am with highest esteem and kindest personal regards, [1212].
