This Psychic Reading given by Edgar Cayce at his home on Arctic Crescent, Virginia Beach, Va., this 16th day of January, 1935, in accordance with request made by self - Miss [543], Active Member of the Ass”n for Research & Enlightenment, Inc.

Time of Reading 3:30 to 3:50 P. M. [GD’s note: Since a copy of 543-22 is not on file with Edgar Cayce Foundation or elsewhere according to available records, the following is a sheet from Mildred Davis’ “observation book,” which she kept over a period of approximately two years. It gives a brief of the reading along with her observations.] File No. 543-22 Date: Jan.,16, 1935 Time: P.M. Vibration: Good Individual Present: No Personal Reaction to Reading: Attitude of Psychic: Passive. Looked and acted tired still. Much confusion in boys getting off to town. Others Present: Psychic; Conductor; Steno; Observer; “Yes, quite a difference in being directed and directing,” after suggestion was given TWICE, after locating body.

1. Phenomena: Only slight changes in cause of condition that prevents normal functioning. Some aid has been brought body.

2. Treatment:

Continue Maypop Bitters. Castor Oil Packs to caecum, lacteals, on right side (directions). Yeast (new activative - Fleichman’s - XR?) Alcaroid after heavy daily meal. Caroid Tablets Exercises; Diet, alkalin (suggestions). Mental attitude - toward Divine. Treatment in Durham Hospital, 1932, not helpful to body. Salt peter may be taken later.

3. Reports:

“We are through with this reading.” There had been another, but psychic appeared tired so it was not included. Complained of headache. Frowned upon awaking, but soon became cheerful.

R1. 1/19/35 EC’s letter: “I would like for you to give me almost a weekly report for a while; not so much as to the number of attacks but rather as to your feelings respecting the effect that the diet, activity and Bitters have at this time, and especially the results of the packs. Have you had the packs recommended in a reading before? I don’t remember. But I’m most anxious about each and every case, and you know for you; for I have felt through the years a special interest in you, I have felt so closely drawn to you. Evidently, from the readings [See 543-11 Life Rdg. indicating close ass’n with EC as John Bainbridge when she, [543], was sister of Pocahontas] there is a reason for that, and I should want to do every- thing possible for you to help you. Of course, it’s going to be necessary that we have your wholehearted and sincere cooperation throughout in the matter.”

R2. 1/23/35 “The Bitters came Thurs. p.m. and the rdg. reached me Sat. a.m. Thank you very much for both…

“The rdg. was a very satisfactory one I thought… No, I have not had the packs recommended in a rdg. before, and I cannot say I cherish having them now, but, of course, I’ll have them carried out…

“Brother, just exactly what is the meaning of the first part of the last rdg. ‘Quite a difference in directing and being directed!’

“There are two ways that this could be taken and I would like your version of it.

“You know in the rdgs. one thing I terribly dislike is not being able to eat a raw apple, for I like them immensely. It’s bad enough not to be able to have sweets much, though I shouldn’t mind that much, could I have my delicious raw apples. But - we can’t have everything!…

“I shall try to give you a weekly report…

“The information gave that I should eat no Irish or sweet potatoes. But what about my eating the skin of potatoes, particularly the Irish, occasionally? I know at one time while at the Beach, you told me it would be alright to have that which I’ve just mentioned, if eliminations were normal.

“I feel fine now. The Bitters are an aid to digestion, and my general feeling all the time. I know that my outlook on life is improved and I shall endeavor to keep it so.”

R3. 1/24/35 EC’s letter: I have your of the 23rd, and I want to thank you very much for the inclosed check. Of course, as you very well know, [543], I am not making any charge for the Bitters. There is only the price of the alcohol that goes in the fusion, and whether I will be able to get it at this price or not, I don’t know. This I was able to get through Dr. Parker. [James R. Parker, M.D.]

I should think, [543], that the Alcaroid and Cariod would be begun after you have had a few of the packs. The idea of the packs is, from the information that we have had, that it is for the lesion that is evidently in that area that may be of the first cause and the natural tendency has been for constipation throughout the years. My understanding, [543], of the differences between being directed and directing, is that in the one the conditions that cause these attacks is directing the activities, we might say, of your body, while in the other you are directing the thing that will evidently relieve these troubles altogether. [GD’s note: The rdg.’s opening statement may also have referred to [543]‘s recent determination to follow the rdgs., whereas for years she had given in to her parents and submitted to drugs to prevent the attacks. She finally had secured their grudging consent to let her follow the rdgs.]

R4. 2/35 Weekly letters started - mostly asking questions about specific parts of the treatment but always thanking EC for his interest and help.

R5. 3/13/35 EC’s letter: “Don’t thank me, [543]. Read over your Life Rdg. again [543-11] and you will see that possibly I owe you a lot, for you see it was I who was with you at Jamestown, and possibly wasn’t just as sweet to you as I should have been, so have a lot to make up now.”

R6. 3/24/35 Father [1212]‘s letter:

My Dear Mr. Cayce:

I have not written you for sometime in regard to [543], I am now writing you requesting that you DO NOT LET [543] KNOW that I have written you.

We (Mrs. […], my daughter […], and writer), have been impressed with the fact that for the past few months, that when [543] is taking the “May Blossom Bitters” her attacks are much more severe, often such violent convulsions, I am writing to let you know the facts, also will ask you to write [543] to discontinue taking this, if you deem advisable, until you advise her to begin again.

It is my purpose to bring her to Va. Beach for a few days in latter part of June or July, as she is so desirous of making a visit.

Please bear in mind when you write [543], just write her as if you had not heard from me, PLEASE.

R7. 3/28/35 Father [1212]‘s letter:

Referring to my letter of March 24th in regard to [543], she was not taking “May Blossom Bitters” for about one week, and she was better, rather did not have many attacks, those she had were generally mild.

Last Sunday she commenced taking the Bitters again, yesterday and today, she has been so very irritable, blue and many severe attacks, if we suggest not taking the bitters, she just goes all to pieces. PLEASE write her to discontinue taking the bitters, UNTIL YOU ADVISE HER FURTHER, BUT DO NOT LET HER KNOW I HAVE written you. She is getting to the point, it is just almost more than we can stand, so please write her AT ONCE, I thank you for your promptness, I beg to remain with very kind regards. [GD’s note: EC was out of town for several weeks - we were in N.Y. & D.C. giving rdgs., and evidently his mail was not forwarded.]

R8. 4/20/35 Miss [543]‘s letter [asking for a Ck. Rdg.]:

“Mother has very high blood pressure and is exceedingly nervous. We are going to try and secure someone who would stay with me for a very moderate sum with their room and board thrown in.”

R9. 4/24/35 Father’s letter:

Mr. Edgar Cayce, 1815 Columbia Roads (Apt. - 306) Washington, D.C.

My Dear Mr. Cayce:

I wrote you on March, 24th and on March 28th in regard to the bad results [543] had from taking “May Blossom Bitters”.

About 10 days ago, I carried her to Richmond, Va. to visit relative, her attacks have been so severe, then following with minor attacks, very unusual for her to miss even one day without these attacks.

As requested in the above letters, will you please write [543] direct, to …, Va. as she will return latter part of this week or Sunday, in writing her do not allude to receiving a letter from me, PLEASE write her to discontinue taking the May Blossom Bitters until further advised by you.

You cannot IMAGINE how different she is when taking these bitters, and the longer she takes this preparation the worse her spells are, I thank you for writing [543] at once, I am with very kind regards.

R10. 4/29/35 EC’s letter to Mr. [1212]: I have been out of town for several weeks; hence the delay in answering your letters, as I received them all at the same time when I returned home.

Of course, I will comply with your request regarding the Mayblossom Bitters. But are you very sure this is the cause? We have at the present time about six or eight cases very similar that are responding most wonderfully with the use of the Bitters. So it would appear that it is something else causing the trouble rather than the Bitters. However, I’m writing [543] requesting that she discontinue this until we are able to find out whether it is correct or not.

I would say I have been doing fairly well, but don’t believe Mother much thinks so…because a good M.D. once told her her high blood pressure would remain that way as long as my condition was as it is, it’s hard to get her to realize it could be caused by something else…”
