This psychic reading given by Edgar Cayce at his home on Arctic Crescent, Virginia Beach, Va., this 21st day of April, 1938, in accordance with request made by the self - through her sister, Miss [993], Active Member of the Ass”n for Research & Enlightenment, Inc.

Time of Reading 11:50 to 12:00 A. M. Eastern Standard Time. …, Va. (Physical Suggestion)

1. EC: Yes, we have the body here, [560].

2. Now as we find, conditions in many respects are very aggravating in the physical forces of the body.

3. The abilities to meet all of the disturbing factors through the mental and spiritual aspects have not been gainsaid, neither are they lacking in effective application.

4. But as has been pointed out to the entity and to others oft, all conditions that become necessary for the activity of the spiritual forces within self - if they are effective - are in using what is in hand.

5. Though it may require those abilities of the surgeon, the internal medicine, the mechanical appliance or of any of the varied activities, the good is of the same source as the spirit of truth. Look on them as such and not be antagonistic to conditions as they exist.

6. Ready for questions.

7. (Q) Would the removal of the accumulation in mammary glands by surgery help to overcome the condition in the body more quickly? (A) This would help to overcome the conditions more quickly. The growths are NOT necessarily malignant, but may become so; though the very spiritual influences have kept them in check.

8. (Q) Would you advise an operation at this time as best? (A) We would advise rather the consultation with a surgeon, such as Payne, [Robert Lee Payne, M.D.] for the consideration of same.

For unless there is, of course, the rest gained, such strains of themselves produce GREATER excitement which IS added poison to the general system; and will need the effect of rest or sedatives or those activities for the conditions to become so that the entity or body may gain control over self.

Then, we would advise rather the service OF such for consultation, and if there are the findings that such would be the better, well done.

9. (Q) Should anything be given to produce sleep, under the direction of a physician? (A) These are conflicting questions, see? This depends upon what is the choice. If operative, then naturally something will be given. If not operative, then it will become necessary - unless there are influences brought about to produce rest.

10. (Q) Any other advice for the body at this time? (A) Let those influences of the Creative Forces guide thee in thy seeking to be a channel of help to others; meeting in self those things necessary for making thy body, thy mind, as one with Him. [GD’s note: Her parents had died of cancer. She died of cancer on 1/9/39. Subsequently her sister and a brother died of it.]

R1. 4/21/38 EC’s letter to HLC in N.Y.: “[560] has gone all to pieces again. Dr. Crews says she has cancer of breast. Please don’t say I told you. You know how everyone is about such things. The reading today suggested she have surgeon examine her.”

R2. 4/25/38 Mrs. [413] phoned: “[560] is being given radium treatments by Dr. Payne. [993] wants to know if violet ray at home should be continued.” [GD’s note: We told her No, also to discontinue the Radio-Active Appliance.]

R3. 4/28/38 Sister [993] phoned: “Dr. Payne sent [560] to Dr. Eley [Clayton W. Eley, M.D.] who is giving radium treatments each day. She has discontinued taking other treatments suggested in reading except Codiron and diet. The doctor said it was alright for her to take the Codiron if her blood test shows the need of it. I know she needs it, else the reading wouldn’t have suggested it. Please all of you pray for us as never before. The radium treatments aren’t so painful, but she has to take a sedative every night to sleep; has pressure on back of neck. She asks that we especially pray for her to have a better mental attitude; she can’t keep from worrying about herself, and can’t get her mind off of her condition.”

R4. 6/3/38 Miss [560]‘s letter to EC: “I am taking this opportunity to thank you for your many kindnesses to me recently, for the Physical Readings and what they have meant to me. Words at times seem to be inadequate. [993] and I want to thank you for your picture which I assure you we treasure very highly, also to thank you, Mrs. Cayce and Gladys for the nice visit you paid us. I will try to take care of the readings that were given me just as soon as I can do so. Not altogether in dollars and cents, but that I may be the channel of help to others that He would have me be, looking to Him, the author and finisher of faith.”

R5. 6/6/38 Edgar Cayce’s letter to [560]: “Thank you ever so much for yours of 3rd - if we have been the least bit helpful

• all praise to HIM - for it is not of myself at all - tho knowing you and loving you as we all do - you know we are happy to try and do what ever we may. Just hope you are feeling a whole lot better, and will soon be with us again. We miss you - lots more than we would know how to say - and you may be sure we are praying with and for you - that you may be the wonderful help you have always been to all of us - for you are an inspiration to all of us.

“Thanks about the picture - feel it is a bit egotistical in me to think anyone would care particularly about it, but appreciate it if anyone cares.

“Thanks for everything. Take good care and be with us real soon.”

R6. 6/21/38 GD’s note: We were told that Miss [560] had suffered agonies, that her whole side had been RAW!

R7. 8/5/38 GD’s note: Miss [560] was operated on this morning [General Hospital, Norfolk, Va.]. Miss [993] phoned last night to ask us to pray for them.

R8. 8/15/38 Friend Mrs. [413] phoned: “Just got back from the hospital. [993] is awfully worried, tried not to show it. [560] was getting along fine, was supposed to go home yesterday - when she developed a diarrhea condition, which they haven’t been able to check. She’s FEELING much worse than she’s felt at all. [993] said ‘If only we had gotten her home, so we could follow a reading.’ But we decided that maybe the Reading could give something simple that she could do herself to stop the diarrhea, so she could go home. They are afraid of the effect on the other condition. Her entire breast was removed - said there was no malignancy, she was just fine - had gotten along better than anybody they ever saw with such a condition. But now this diarrhea is pulling her down dreadfully.”

R10. 5/8/67 Ledger-Star article WIDELY KNOWN SURGEON - DR. PAYNE DIES, FINAL RITES TUESDAY:

NORFOLK - Dr. Robert Lee Payne, 84, a distinguished Norfolk surgeon whose children also became prominent in the city’s professional and business affairs, died Sunday night. He had retired from practice, in 1963.

Dr. Payne was one of the founding members of the American Board of Surgery, an organization for the examination and certification of surgeons.

During World War II he served as a consultant for the Army, visiting medical centers in various parts of the United States to give medical lectures and demonstrations.

Dr. Payne was past president of the Southern Surgical Association, the Seaboard Medical Society and the Norfolk County Medical Society. He was also a member of the board of governors of the American College of Surgeons and a fellow of the American Surgical Association.

His interests outside his profession were extensive. Dr. Payne was an active yachtsman, hunter, horseback rider, fly fisherman and golfer. He once authored an article on putting for Sports Illustrated Magazine and was a member of the Mastigouch Fish and Game Club of Quebec, Canada.

Dr. Payne was a founder of the Princess Anne Country Club.

He also was a member of the Norfolk Yacht and Country Club and the Norfolk German Society.

The son of Dr. Robert Lee and Mary Emma Payne, Dr. Payne was born in Lexington, N.C., on Dec. 4, 1882. After the family moved to Norfolk in 1894, he attended Norfolk public schools, the University of North Carolina and the University of Pennsylvania Medical School, where he received his M.D. degree in 1905.

Dr. Payne began his practice in Norfolk in 1906, in partnership with his father, after interning for a year at St. Agnes Hospital in Philadelphia. He later served as chief surgeon for Norfolk General Hospital, St. Vincent De Paul Hospital and the Norfolk Southern Railway Co., and was made an honorary member of the North Carolina Medical Society.

He was a prolific contributor to medical and surgical journals.

The Norfolk physician was an elder of Norfolk’s First Presbyterian Church. He also was affiliated with the Sigma Nu, Nu Sigma Nu and Alpha Omega Alpha fraternities.

Dr. Payne’s survivors include his wife, Mrs. Mary Harmon Payne, and five children, all of Norfolk: Dr. Robert L. Payne Jr., a surgeon; Mrs. Mary P. Hogan, wife of realtor Hunter A. Hogan Jr.; Richard B. Payne, president of Dixie Manufacturing Co.; Daniel H. Payne, a partner in a law firm; and M. Lee Payne, executive vice president of Seaboard Citizens National Bank.

His other survivors are two sisters, Mrs. M. N. King of Norfolk and Mrs. T. C. Worth of Durham, N.C., 13 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Funeral service, arranged by the H. D. Oliver Funeral Apartments, Norfolk, will be at noon Tuesday at First Presbyterian Church, with burial in Cedar Grove Cemetary.

B3. 4/21/38 A.M. Friend Mrs. [413] phoned: “I’m at [993]‘s and have been reading 560-6. If you haven’t had the check-up yet, please ask these questions. You know, sometimes the readings don’t tell you unless you ask, and [993] said she hadn’t asked any questions when she phoned you earlier this A.M. I’m here and will stay until you phone.

“Would the removal of the accumulation in mammary glands by surgery help to overcome the condition in the body more quickly? If so, what doctor would you advise - Dr. R. L. Payne or Dr. C. J. Andrews?”
