This Psychic Reading given by Edgar Cayce at his office, 115 West 35th Street, Virginia Beach, Va., this 31st day of December, 1926, in accordance with request made by his mother, Mrs […].

Time of Reading 5:15 P. M. Eastern Standard Time. …, Indiana.

1. GC: You will go over this body carefully, examine it thoroughly, and tell me the conditions you find at the present time. You will diagnose the case thoroughly, giving the cause of the existing conditions, also the treatment for the cure and relief of this body.

2. EC: Now, we find there are those conditions that may be assisted. There are others [the epilepsy?] that are of such nature that the effects will remain and be to this body the normal conditions, though abnormal to others.

3. In that that may be corrected lies that condition that is to prevent the inroads of those conditions that are of the nature that produce the sapping of the vitality through the pulmonaries [emphysema?], and that condition wherein nerves are being so relaxed by the giving away of the portions in system that cause stability in the whole system. These, assisted, will bring better conditions for the physical forces of the body.

4. To meet the needs, then, of these conditions at the present time, we would first prepare three (3) capsules, with this in each:

Eucalyptol…1 minim, Canadian Balsam…1/2 minim, Rectified Oil of Turp…1 minim, Benzosol*…1 minim, Heroin…1/60 grain.

This should be taken one every other day.

5. Massage the whole of the cerebro-spinal system with equal parts of pure Olive Oil and Tincture of Myrrh. Heat the oil, then add the myrrh. Only prepare sufficient for one treatment at a time, which would be three (3) tablespoonsful.

Massage thoroughly in the spine each evening at the time for retiring.

6. Let the diet be those of as much of those pre-digested foods and liquids as the body well assimilates - that is, we find the conditions are such that there are times the body assimilates better than at others. Do not overload the system so as to cause retractions through the inability of eliminations in the digestive system, see?

7. After two (2) quantities - that is, six (6) capsules - have been taken, and the massage has been made each day during this period, then we would give the changes necessary, and as will be helpful for those other conditions [epilepsy?] as are produced by the inability of nerve centers to coordinate between the nerve system, the brain forces, and the laxness throughout the functioning organs.

8. We are through for the present.

R1. 1/27 Answer to questionnaire gave his age as 31 years: ”…I am a World War veteran and have been given up by some of the best Government hospitals as incurable. I am rated by the Veterans’ Bureau as a permanent total disability of 100%. I am an epileptic caused by a compound fracture of skull during war. My case grew worse and worse until present time. I shall follow your instructions carefully…”

R2. 1/10/27 Letter indicated he was having trouble getting the prescription filled on account of the Heroin.

R3. 1/13/27 EC referred him to Dr. Thomas B. House in Hopkinsville, Kentucky, for getting the prescription written and filled.

R4. 3/27 Letter in answer to questionnaire: ”…I followed your directions of December 31st, 1926, to the extent of using spinal massages of Olive Oil and Myrrh which were prescribed with very satisfactory results and intend to continue using same. One of my most important nerves of nervous system oftimes does not function as it should, causing temporary fainting spells or a form of epilepsy caused from shell shock or fractured skull… I am obtaining surprising results from spinal massage. Am going to continue it but I should like to experiment with medical prescription [containing the Heroin] which I have not been able to secure. My case is epilepsy, not the hereditary kind but caused from my fractured skull. Now Jesus Christ Himself demonstrated that a physician must not cure himself. Hence I am relying on someone else to help me, for to Christ nothing was impossible…”

R5. 4/3/27 Letter from Dr. House: ”…Your man [5642] wrote me and enclosed a part of a prescription, also a part of your reading. I could not make head nor tails out of it, as it had been copied from yours. I wrote him so, but have never heard any more from him…”

R6. 5/1/28 Letter: ”…I am a sane and a thinking man and of a fairly good education. I have carefully read and studied the booklet you sent me at a recent date. I had a reading from Mr. Cayce and he prescribed for me one ingredient, Heroin, which I am unable to procure as of this date.

“I made you one very small donation [$2.00] and being a disabled war veteran I am living entirely on Government compensation. I can donate no more to your institution [A.N.I.].

“What I wish to ask is this: Would I, under these circumstances be entitled to the benefit of your institution in obtaining this prescription which was given me by Mr. Cayce? “I, like most men, want to be normal and well. I, after over nine years, still have enough faith in the science of the phenomena to think I can still be cured, and as my disability is epilepsy caused from shell shock you can readily see my lot is no pleasant one. Hopefully yours…”

R7. 5/23/28 Letter: ”…As it has been some time since my last reading and my physical condition may have changed in that time, I think your suggestion (in your letter of 5/19/28) of another reading is very good. You should set the time and the date of this reading to fit your own convenience.

“As various doctors have said that keeping my bowels open and avoiding constipation was essential to my health I think one of the questions to be asked should be of my bowels and their general condition. Another is of how many attacks I average weekly and also their duration and violence. Also if and how heat or excitement effects me and how many, if any, dissolute habits I have. These questions I shall frankly answer and trusting to receive an early reply I am…”

R8. 5/27/28 Mr. [5642] sent a one-dollar contribution.

R9. 6/27/28 EC gave Ck. Physical 5642-2, again apparently concentrating on the pulmonary condition rather than the epileptic condition about which he seemed most concerned.

R10. 7/30/28 EC gave the third rdg., 5642-3, indicating betterment in general condition and advising to put in the background the occasional [epileptic] attacks, knowing that the mental body IS the builder. Evidently the reading considered the treatment recommended for the pulmonary condition to be more important, for the present at least, than concentrating on the epileptic attacks.

R11. 7/3/29 He wrote: “In all ways I am much better.”

R12. 10/29/28 Rdg. 5642-4 advised continuing inhalant and massage.
