This psychic reading given by Edgar Cayce at his home on Arctic Crescent, Virginia Beach, Virginia, this 26th day of June, 1934, in accordance with request made by the husband, Mr. [274], Active Member of the Ass”n for Research & Enlightenment, Inc.
[Edgar Cayce; Gertrude Cayce, Conductor; Gladys Davis, Steno. Mildred Davis.]
Time of Reading 3:40 to 4:10 P. M. Eastern Standard Time. New York City. (Physical Suggestion)
-
EC: Yes, (called by another name) we have the body here, [598].
-
Now, as we find, there are conditions that disturb the better physical functioning of the body. These if corrected in the present may make for a better physical body, less distress and a better physical reaction for the mental and the material and soul development of the body.
-
These conditions, as we find, have to do with the functioning of the organs of the pelvis, and the relationships the distresses there have to do with the system in the STRAIN the nerve pressures put upon the rest of the body.
-
Then, these are the conditions as we find them with this body, [598], we are speaking of, … Avenue - yes, it’s in this room here:
-
The BLOOD SUPPLY we find rather in a state of what may be called IRRITATION; at times being very well balanced, at others - especially just before and during the menstrual period there is a tendency for the thickening, or the organs of the body become distressed through the nerve strain in the activity of the body as related to the eliminations and strains on the body at such periods; producing - from this strain - the tendencies for almost a constant heaviness in the lower part of the abdomen. And constant strain on the activity of the eliminations, as affected by the hepatic circulation, produces - with the inflammation that is caused in the ovaries themselves - pressure on the kidneys. Hence bladder irritation, headaches that are very depressing to the body. This changing, as it were, the circulation from the upper portion of the body, dryness in throat, with the tendencies of a tickling sensation in the roof of mouth, and a fullness in the bronchi; making for an extraordinary disorder in producing constipation throughout the system; making for heaviness in the lower limbs, for the swelling at times of the ankles, of the limbs - in the upper portion just below the knee; and in the hips and back. These are effects produced on the circulation and the STRAIN that is produced by same.
-
In the NERVE SYSTEM this produces a constant irritation, for this affecting the nerves of the body - especially at the periods - makes for irritation at times, tendency to affect even the sensory system; as the eyes, the ears, the taste, the touch, the feelings, the emotions of the body become accentuated at times to such an extent as to produce almost that of OVERANXIETY, OVEREXERTION in any of the directions, or the EMOTIONS even of the body. These, as we find, are reflex - to be sure - from conditions that exist in the SPECIFIC disturbances in the pelvic organs.
-
As to the ORGANS of the body themselves, as indicated, the soft tissue in face, the circulation through these portions being deflected, and the nervous condition, makes for those periods when easily taking cold, dryness in the throat, through the antrum, through the nasal passages at times; not always, but at times; a feeling of heaviness across the upper portion of the stomach itself at times. These are from nerve reactions, and not ORGANIC disturbances.
-
The digestive area and the eliminations through the increase of the flow of the blood supply to those portions of the body at the periods of the elimination through the menstrual activity in the body, these produce poor circulation in the hepatics; though these are more as of impoverishment than specific disturbances.
-
Then we find, if those pressures are removed in the areas as indicated, the general system would be improved and those disturbances in many portions of the body would be entirely eliminated.
-
As to the organs of the pelvis, here - as indicated - we find the greater distress. In times back there was congestion in the genitive system, and those activities of astringents and hygiene that made for that which affected the tissue, that involves the activity of the Fallopian tubes; and THROUGH these brought a dryness to the ovary activity. With this dryness there has been that tendency of the heaviness and pain that has preceded and followed the menstrual periods. It has tended to make for a position of the womb itself to be out of line, or pulled toward the front, by the dryness or the adherence of, a thickening of, the membranes of the organs in the pelvis; making for - in the puba and vagina - irritations, and a discharge at times, that become very disturbing to the body. And with the use of any of the douches that would alleviate has tended to make for the thickening of the tissue, rather than relieving the distress.
-
Then, in meeting the needs of the conditions for this body, [598], as we find, the better applications would be with the heat that may be applied through the FLOWING of solution through the organ itself, that will relieve this tendency for the ovaries and the tubes to become congested by the tendency for the distresses there; so that their discharge or their functioning in producing the activative forces in gestation and for the creating of life itself in the functioning of the organs of this portion of the body would be brought to such normalcy that the activity of conception may take place in the body itself. But under the EXISTENT conditions it would be ABNORMAL, for we would have abnormalcy in that which might be conceived - in the present condition. Neither would there be the carrying through of the period of pregnancy, under the existent conditions.
-
In the application, as we find, the better manner would be through the Elliot machine, or the tubes that may be inserted in the vagina in such a manner as to fill the cavity, and by the raising of the temperature in the solution to relieve these pressures and make for an enlivening of the tissue by the character of the circulation of the blood supply, to relieve all these distresses. See? This, as we find, should be taken for at least ten to fifteen treatments. Then a period of rest from same, for ten days to three weeks.
-
During such a rest period we would have at least three to four to six of the general massages or manipulations osteopathically, that would COORDINATE all of the locomotories, the activity of the lumbar, sacral and the coccyx area; that will coordinate the cervicals with the nerves’ activity in the sympathetic system.
-
Then another period of three to five treatments with the Elliot machine, and we will have a near normal body.
-
Ready for questions.
-
(Q) What will correct the almost chronic constipation? (A) As indicated, when we have a normal circulation the peristaltic movement and the activity of the lymph circulation through the intestinal tract will bring about almost near normalcy in this direction.
But during those periods when the osteopathic manipulations are being taken, we would find that the use of the psyllium combined with agar (Emul-Psyllo) will make for the enlivening and the dilation of the tissue, and leaving sufficient of the forces that create for better peristaltic movement without too great a dilation, see? As to the matter of the diet, follow a general, normal diet, with a tendency towards the alkalin foods rather than too great a quantity of acids; and we will find we will make the corrections for this body.
Do that.
-
(Q) Is an operation necessary? (A) Not necessary, if this MODE of treatment is carried out. And if it is not, operations - as we find, without destroying most of the organs of the pelvis, all of the genitive organs or the ovaries themselves - well, they would not do a great deal of good!
-
(Q) What causes the very nervous, excitable condition? (A) As indicated, the pressure through the circulation of those conditions that exist in the ovaries, in the womb, or in the vagina itself.
-
(Q) Is there any further advice for the better welfare of this body? (A) If these conditions are followed, as we find for this body, they will bring near normalcy.
-
We are through for the present.

Reports & Follow-up
R1. 7/6/34 EC’s ltr. to husband: “The information gotten for your wife was sent some days ago. …I hope you have had no trouble getting in touch with Dr. Shorell. I met him some years ago in N.Y., and in the last year the readings have recommended the use of the Elliot machine in possibly half a dozen cases. From the medical reports, I understand that this machine has been a most marvellous thing for cases such as described in your wife’s reading. I hope we can have just as favorable a report on her case.”
R2. 9/25/34 Letter from Dr. I. Daniel Shorell to EC: “I have received a communication from Mrs. [598] who has consulted with me. I was amazed to find that your writing coincided with my diagnosis.
“As you undoubtedly know, I have always wanted to know more of your work and to have removed from my mind any doubt that may have existed. In this particular instance the husband of Mrs. [598] tells me that you absolutely did not know his wife, nor had any inkling of her condition. To say that I am amazed will be putting it mildly.
“In accordance with my findings, and with your readings, the patient is undertaking a course of treatments as suggested by you.
“Will you let me know when you expect to be in New York?
“I would enjoy having you call on me to discuss several matters of mutual interest.
“If you will watch the New York Times there will appear an article concerning my new therapy for sinus diseases and hard of hearing cases.
“With my kindest regards, I am,”
Cordially, I. Daniel Shorell, M.D.
R3. 10/25/34 Mrs. [778]‘s ltr. under 1932-1 Reports: “Mr. [274] wrote me your Physical Reading for his wife [598] was remarkably descriptive and the treatment very helpful.”

Background
B1. 6/13/34 Husband [274]‘s ltr.: “I have confidence in your work, so much so that I should like you to give a Physical Reading to a person dear to me, on whose case doctors disagree. Almost constant pains, at times of greater fatigue, very strong in the ovarian region…outside of these, occasional stomach and kidney pains, not often, but acute. Headaches and throat aches. General fatigue in the limbs and legs with swollen ankles and feet.”
B2. 6/23/34 “Are those recurring pains due to ovaritis? Could they interfere with normal pregnancy?”
