This psychic reading given by Edgar Cayce at his home on Arctic Crescent, Virginia Beach, Va., this 12th day of September, 1934, in accordance with request made by the self - Dr. [657], new Associate Member of the Ass”n for Research & Enlightenment, Inc., via Dr. [980].
[Edgar Cayce; Gertrude Cayce, Conductor; Gladys Davis, Steno. Mildred Davis, L. B. Cayce, and a Dr. Bell (astrologer).]
Time of Reading 11:00 to 11:35 A. M. Eastern Standard Time. …, N.Y. (Physical Suggestion) (Body-enquiring mind, etc.)
-
EC: Yes, we have the body, the enquiring mind, [657].
-
Now, as we find in the physical forces of the body, there are conditions that the body should take warning concerning in the present; and with this warning there may be brought about that which may enable the body to make such corrections that would bring the better physical reactions - and thus fit the body in this experience to make a greater mental, material and spiritual advancement.
-
These, then, are conditions-physical as we find them with this body, [657] we are speaking of:
-
In the BLOOD SUPPLY we find there are tendencies for a separation and a lack of coordination in the eliminating channels of the body. Hence we find at times the tendencies for irritation in the superficial circulation, by the body attempting to eliminate poisons that should have been emptied or strained from the circulation in the functioning organs; and we shall see as to how or where this is brought about. [Vitiligo]
-
This produces in the exterior portions, or in the skin or epidermis itself, a rash. As indicated in portions of the organism itself, this arises from two specific causes that do not always work together; but by the activities and the diet this is aggravated at times - at others the aggravation may and does arise from physical exercises of the body. At others there is something of a combination, though at times it may be attributed to the nervous reactions in the body - and this would be one of the conditions of which the body would be, or should be, warned.
-
The pulsations are near normal. The pressure at times varies. It is not a pathological condition in the arterial or heart or lung activity; neither does it arise from a disturbance in organs that usually produce the increased or decreased amount in pressure. Hence, as we would find, not so specific in the metabolism as in the katabolism of the system.
-
As to the elements in the blood supply, there have been periods in the past when there were carried excesses of acid. This is indicated by the manner in which the glands secrete throughout the system. While specific character of elements in the diet make for changes in the activity, or as to what the activity of the glands as related to the assimilation produces, it is indicated more specifically in the ducts and glands in the adrenals. Thus we have an irritation and an excitement at times to the glands of the genitive system, and we have the effect of a body being oversexed; this producing or making for conditions in the sympathetic nervous system that becomes distressing at times. Not that it would be the better in this direction that the body abstain from such activities, but that there be changes in the elements that affect the body; else these would eventually produce in the nervous system of the body, that is already disturbed, conditions that would become aggravating and detrimental to organs of the system.
-
As to the NERVOUS SYSTEM, here we find much of the basis of the physical disturbances in the body. Much at TIMES through repression in certain portions of the body, as indicated in the sympathetic reactions and the incoordination between the eliminating systems of the body. For, if there are not the proper drainages from the system in a coordinated manner, the blood stream and other portions of the body - to which these poisons are carried, or drosses, or the excess of poisons in the form of acid, alkali, or even the potassiums or the iodines - may and do make for irritations that disturb the physical organism. This, as indicated, is from the nerves’ incoordination between sympathetic and cerebrospinal. Here we find a specific condition that exists in the 2nd lumbar and in the 3rd and 4th cervical in the present, where there are such subluxations. Not as a lesion but a tautness; not simply passing, though in one of these in the present we find a more acute condition than ordinary. But with the proper alignment in these specific areas, and with the coordinating of the ganglia along the cerebrospinal system that make for the more specific association and connection with the sympathetic and cerebrospinal system, we would find much of this tautness - not only in the nervous systems but in the activity of the organs as related to their coordination in the eliminations, the activities throughout the system would be materially aided.
-
The ORGANS themselves of the body:
-
Brain forces are very good, though we find there are indications - in the brain’s activity itself, from the impressions that are created in the various chambers or activities of centers in the brain force of being under a stress and a strain; for a sufficient period to produce at times the tendency for irritations that are NOT normal to the body. For the discretion, the discreteness, the ability for the proper dissemination of ideas, ideals and activities, are indicated from the very basis of the centers in the brain force itself. But anxiety and suppression of activity in normal directions have been a contributory cause to producing oftentimes those conditions in the areas and ganglia specifically as indicated, that have made upsets; sometimes of minor natures, at others making for a more definite, a more decided change in the general physical forces of the body.
-
In the soft tissue of head, ears and throat we find some indications of a congestion that is a form of catarrh, as ORDINARILY termed, but is more the lack of the proper circulation; or there is the SLOWING of the circulation through these portions, through the pressures in the cervical area as indicated. With this tendency, or this accumulation, this activity through the salivary glands - or the lack of these being sufficient to supply the necessary digestive forces in the form of the alkalines that should go with same, there are produced at times upsets in the digestive area. These are more indications, yet with the corrections osteopathically in the specific areas indicated, as we find, much of this would be overcome. Not that from these there would be an IMMEDIATE relief, though EASE would be almost immediate from a few of such adjustments or treatments; but it is necessary that those influences from the blood supply be maintained as well as the proper drainages and in their proper coordinating way and manner be maintained for periods sufficient for the body to ADJUST itself to these alterations or changes.
-
Lungs, bronchials, larynx, heart’s activity - as indicated there are periods when these are under pressure, but more of a psychological nature than pathological; and the causes are as given.
-
In the digestive system we find upsets at times from those very conditions that have existed, and at times we have recurrence of the gastric juices being disturbed. There will be better changes made in this direction if there will be the adherence to those things that make for more of an alkalin rather than an acid diet. Not that there should be any such SPECIFICS as to make for RADICAL changes; but beware of too much sugars that with the amount of starches that are ordinary to the body form an excess of the alcohol, or the form of irritation that produces to the katabolism of the system those disturbances that make for stress upon the glands - as we have indicated.
-
As to the liver, the spleen, the pancreas, the activities of the organs here - under normal or ordinary conditions, these function very good; but when these are under stress - either from mental strain or physical - they bring disorders that make for an indication of these being disturbed in their functioning; and, as we have indicated, are more from the nervous system than from any pathological effect save as produced by their activity at the time.
-
Hence the changes we would make would be as indicated; the osteopathic corrections and the change in the diet, adding occasionally such electrical changes as to aid the systems to coordinate the superficial circulation with the deeper or internal circulation. Hence the dilation of the ducts of the liver, or the gall duct, the activities through the pancreas, will make for a betterment. These treatments would be either through the LOW electrical vibration from the wet cell battery or a more severe low reverse activity from the sinusoidal, attaching the plates to the 4th and 5th dorsal - at other times to the 3rd and 4th cervical - and over the area of the ducts of the liver, or over the gall duct. These will make for the changes as from the nerve reaction.
-
In the organs of the pelvis or the genitive organs, as indicated, are rather SYMPATHETIC conditions; and with the alterations in diet, in the activities through the portions of the system indicated, these should be the nearer normal.
-
First, then, we would apply corrections in the lumbar and the cervical areas as specific. A coordination of the centers along the cerebrospinal system, between the sympathetic and the cerebrospinal system. As indicated, in the 4th lumbar area - coordinated, of course, with the 2nd and 3rd. The upper dorsal area, or through the brachial plexus area. The more specific in the hypogastric and pneumogastric plexus in the upper cervical areas. These made to coordinate; not so much by adjustments, but by using the structural portions as the leverage for not IRRITATING but relaxing the ganglia that make for coordinations in these conditions.
-
Change the diet to the more alkalin; less of sugars, but keeping a balance in those foods that aid in eliminations.
-
Stimulate the activity through the ducts of the eliminating and assimilating system through the low electrical vibration, or the lower form and the reverse activity through the sinusoidal ray.
-
As to the mental and financial conditions, as we find, these are - to be sure - those things that make more for the MATERIAL activities; and are dependent upon the discretion and mental activities as to what may be an aid to the body in making the decisions. These must be rather that which the BODY finds is the proper reaction from the existent conditions. Better that the mental be made in accord with the spiritual activities, that as the body treats its fellow man so may the body expect to be treated by those who contact this body.
-
We would not give speculative interests for the body, nor anything that may portend towards dealing with the outer influences; for the body in its mental, in its mind, may MEET itself by meditation and prayer and looking within. Remember that which has been given, “If ye will be my son, I will be thy God.” Honor thy father, thy mother, thy brother, thy friend; yea, thine enemy; for he that is kind to his fellow man lendeth to the Lord - HE will repay!
-
We are through.

Reports
Reports & Follow-up
R1. 9/14/34 Letter from EC to Dr. [657]: “You no doubt already have the information gotten in your rdg. a few days ago. I don’t know as I can make at this time any special comment on this. I’ll only be anxious to know just what your reaction to it is, and I would like for you to be just as critical about it as you would be if it were from some of your other associates in the same line of treatment that you give yourself. Possibly not all of the material questions were answered just as you would like. It is very much better, if you undertake anything of the kind, to have such questions separate from the physical reading; for - from our years of experience - I do not believe it is right to use such information for material things, IF it is valuable in the physical aid. Yet I know at times the material problems do interfere with the efficiency of an individual to such an extent as to become a part of the general physical condition; and if we can be of help at such times, I don’t think it’s anything more than right to try - but I believe they should be entirely separate. So, if you feel that we can be of help in this direction, don’t hesitate to call on us.
“Be sure to let us know your reaction to the Physical Reading. We are counting on meeting you sometime in the near future, and we certainly don’t want to try to SELL you something - but want you to judge your OWN self as to whether or not there is anything to this. And don’t hesitate to tell us, because we don’t want to fool ourselves - nor anyone else.
“I just received the address and directions for Mrs. [664]‘s reading. I can very well imagine how the near tragedy must have affected her. We hope to get the reading in the near future, and will send you the report as soon as possible.”
R2. 9/15/34 “Your report of me was just rec’d, and I am well pleased with it as far as the physical side is concerned. That phase has been well covered.
“But the thing which is causing me the really great mental and physical strain is the financial situation. It undoubtedly does, as you have said in the reading, react upon the mind and body detrimentally. But the questions you asked me to send regarding the financial were not answered, except perhaps one. I was hoping they would be answered very definitely. It would mean so much to me to be properly enlightened in this respect. I sincerely hope they will still be taken care of for me. Is it asking too much?
“This skin condition you speak of does not seem to be the one I had reference to. It is not a rash or irritation, but a loss of pigment in certain areas of my skin. The cause and remedy were asked. It may also be due to improper elimination, but I should be glad to know definitely.
“I trust you have been able to answer the question regarding Mrs. [664], and that I will receive the report later. As you can readily understand, this is most important to me.
“I am trying to keep the mental in accord with the spiritual by the daily reading of Unity, and trying to apply its teachings to my daily life.
“Next week I expect to visit Mr. [257], and he will undoubtedly have some very pleasant things to say regarding yourself.
“Now, I am going to ask you if you will please enlighten me all you can thru your reading in the above matters.”
R3. 9/17/34 “Your letter of the 15th inst. was rec’d this a.m…
“If the ‘brakes’ do not come for me soon, I do not know just what my next move will be…the fault does not lie in my ability, I assure you. I am sufficiently efficient to do very good work in my profession. Mrs. [664] has some money but she does not assist materially, and I do not care to have her do so. However, I have a great amount of loving kindness for her, and try to overlook all negative and discordant things in the light of her condition. I am now reading Unity quite regularly, and have been, with some lapses, for two and one-half years. I feel that the mental is fairly well in tune with the spiritual. I have more than the average amount of understanding along this line, and try to use it in my relations with my fellow men. So spiritual advice does not add to the benefit I already have. What I need in the material is definite, understandable, and sound material information or enlightenment. The questions are leads in this direction. Therefore, I trust that you will render me this very great service when time permits…
“The one question not answered in the physical - loss of pigment in certain areas of the skin on my body, the cause and remedy - I would like answered, if possible and not asking too much. As it affects my appearance slightly, perhaps it can be included in the material reading. The rest of the physical reading was most satisfactory, but I have not had the vertebral lesions checked up yet. I shall have it done this week…”
R4. 9/20/34 “Should I borrow from someone, to help restore the bonds I lost? If so, from whom? Under the circumstances as I foresee them, I could pay the debt back within three years, and it would take a big load off my shoulders. The market is low enough to buy them at a good price. The question in my mind is, could I get this loan involving several thousand dollars? It really is several questions in one.”
R5. 9/27/34 and 11/24/34 [657] obtained 657-2 and 657-3 on business.
R6. 5/4/36 He obtained 657-4 in re sudden acute deafness and continuation of chronic skin condition about which he asked in obtaining 657-1, “loss of pigment in various sized areas of the skin”. [Vitiligo]
Background
Background
B1. 8/31/34 He submitted questions for his wife’s Physical Rdg., 664-1, which was not obtained until 9/19/34 AFTER 657-1 on 9/12/34:
“I am afraid I cannot get her cooperation or desire for your help, as she has her own specialist in whom she has explicit faith, is not as broad in these matters as I am, and her spiritual attitude seems different from mine. She does not know what the doctors have said regarding her prognosis. And while she does not help herself in her mental attitude as much as she might, she takes good care of herself in a physical way. Due to her physical condition, I find it very difficult and unpleasant at times, though I try to take the proper spiritual attitude. During the past year we have not been together so much, as she finds it necessary to spend more and more time in the country due to her health. These are personal things, but felt prompted to tell you.”
B2. 9/8/34 He submitted a conglomeration of questions for his own reading, as follows:
“I shall make it a point to be at the above address Wed. a.m., Sept. 12th, until noon. Between 10:30 and 11:30 I shall try to remain quiet, prayerfully holding to the affirmation and desire that the highest information and help possible may be received for me by you. The questions which come to my mind regarding the physical are as follows:
“I have had an awareness of my heart at odd times during the past year. Owing to my wife’s heart condition [664-1], and that my father dropped dead with smoker’s heart trouble, I thought it might be psychological. Have I any heart condition, and if so, what is the nature of it? and the remedy? [Arrhythmia?]
“Tennis is my hobby, and at times I play it strenuously. It keeps my weight down and seems to help me in feeling well otherwise. It would spoil the pleasure if I had to play slowly. Is it harmful or beneficial to me, and in what way or ways?
“I am quite active sexually at times, or have the desire to be. Am I excessive for my best health in this respect? Would a life of celibacy (if I could live it) be best for me? I now appear very youthful mentally and physically, and I am interested in longevity.
“I have no special diet, and in the winter I take on weight rather readily, losing it in the summer with tennis. I enjoy eating, and am hoping to play tennis once a week during the winter. What would be the best arrangement for me regarding a diet and my weight? “I believe I have a low grade colitis, also a catarrhal condition in my head region. What is the best routine for me to follow to eliminate, or at least keep them in a quiescent stage?
“Are there any other organs or parts in my anatomy below par or not functioning properly? If so, what ones and what is the remedy?
“The financial problems are as follows:
“My practice is practically dead, due to depression, as it was coming along nicely in this neighborhood before the depression. When will the change for the better come with me, and I notice a definite and persistent improvement? When will my indebtedness be entirely cleared up? I have been informed by an astrologer that there is some very substantial financial benefit coming to me at sometime in the near future. It seems to loom up in the reading, and she cannot understand what is holding it back. Is this true, and if so, in what way and how soon shall I receive it? Will I be in any very great financial stress or embarrassment before my finances are in a good sound footing? Should I enter into some other field outside of my profession for remuneration? If so, what? What can I do personally to help improve my financial position? What advice can I have regarding the making or changing of my investments, to recoup my losses in the stock market?
“I hope these questions do not appear stupid, and that they will all be answered in a comprehensive and definite way. Thank you most kindly.”
B3. 9/10/34 “I thought of telling my wife about the reading but her brother and his family were all in the Morro Castle (saved but in bad condition) and she is very much upset. Then too, if I told her and the report was unfavorable to her, she would want to see it. She also knows about my finances, and would be opposed to me spending any money in this way, as she would not have the faith…
“There is one more question I wish to add to the physical ones. I have a certain skin condition. Please explain the cause and remedy, if any.”
