This Psychic Reading given by Edgar Cayce at his office, 115 West 35th Street, Virginia Beach, Va., this 18th day of December, 1926, in accordance with request made by self - Mr. [779].

Time of Reading 8:00 A. M. Eastern Standard Time. …, Alabama.

1. GC: You will have before you [779], …, Alabama, also the information as has been given this body in Life and business readings concerning his associations. You will also have before you his family, home life, the circumstances and conditions surrounding same. You will tell how he is progressing, and you will answer the questions as I ask you regarding same.

2. EC: Yes, we have the body, the enquiring mind, here, and those relations as have been made and as exist with family and business, and that information as has been given as respecting same.

3. Now, we find, while the conditions have arisen that are, or have been, unsatisfactory with the entity, know that there are those conditions that have been made in the life of the entity that will prove to be the greater advantage, will the entity [if the entity will] take same in that manner as to use same for the better conditions in the life; for in the new associations as will be made, the entity will find that the experience will prove beneficial. Though the entity may feel that this condition has put burdens on the entity that are hard to understand, or to even make plain with the information as has been given, yet that as given was correct, with the abilities of the entity and that which should have been carried out - yet to meet the needs of conditions at the present, the entity will find that there are at least three propositions that will be open for same. Take that that gives the most opportunity for the salesmanship, as WELL as the abilities of entity in the manual work as the engraver, see? Be rather the specialty man. Ready for questions.

4. (Q) It has been given the entity should extend the salesmanship endeavor in 1926 and 1927 farther East, for the greater success, financially and mentally for self and family. You will please tell us when this condition will come about, and what the entity should do in respect to same at the present time.

(A) Make those connections as has been given in that which comes near and toward the farther east - for, as the changes are necessitated through the circumstances and conditions as have arisen, these then will bring about, and have brought about changes in the way and manner, and in the line as has been given, see?

5. (Q) Has the entity’s work been satisfactory to the company? If not, why not? (A) The entity’s work satisfactory. The dissatisfaction to the firm of changes brought conditions that were not satisfactory with the company. Work satisfactory - the amount not as satisfactory as might have been.

6. (Q) What would the Forces advise as the proper course for this body to pursue, under the present conditions and circumstances? (A) As that as has been given. Take that offer as will facilitate the conditions of the entity’s abilities as salesman, as workman, and at the same time gives the most time in the home, see? for through these channels this will work out to the best for the entity - for experience is often the dear teacher, yet experience is the lesson through which each and everyone gains that ability to APPLY knowledge or information gained.

R1. 12/28/26 “It was only a few days after I rec’d the company’s letter [See under 779-14 Reports] that I had three propositions and one came in a way that I knew nothing about. The …, Ala. man still wanted me [See 779-14, Par. 3-A], a concern in Valdosta, Ga. wanted me, and the …, Va. man wanted me. So I was up a tree trying to figure out just what to do, as each was pressing me for an answer and I put them off to accept or reject not later than Dec. 19th. I worried quite a bit for several days as to which to take, so on the morning of the 18th (same day reading was given) I rec’d a wire from Va. saying they wanted me the first of 1927, also gave a very much better salary than that which I had rec’d and been offered from the other concerns, and they wanted an answer right now. So I wired them my acceptance of the position as their General Salesman, city, local, and to look after their agents over the territory. After I rec’d the rdg. and worked with it I could well see some of the information given very plainly… Now I was about ready to wire the concern in Ga. my acceptance of their proposition when the wire from Va. stopped me, and after getting the rdg. I was very glad I did, because the work in Valdosta, Ga. would be shop work and not as salesman, but I had thought that the place would suit me better than the place in … [Ala.] and at better pay, too… In fact, my old company [Georgia Marble Co.] in a way brought about my connection with the Va. people. So, in a way, my wife and I and the children feel very much pleased with the change and connection and believe we are going to like and do well in … [Va.]. From the reading it seems that I did do the right thing in accepting this place, as the conditions seem to fit what is given more than the other places.”

R2. 1/6/27 Card “I soon will be here a week and think I am going to like it fine.”

R3. 1/19/27 “If I could only have my family here then I could get down to real thinking and work.”

R4. 2/12/27 “I am sure you will be more than surprised to know that I am here in Ga. Well, I am here anyway for a while. I left …, Va. on the 2nd. I asked that they accept my resignation as soon as possible. The only excuse I have to offer for my leaving …, Va. was that I just could not under the conditions see where it would pay me to stay on and to move there, and after learning the man whom I worked for had so many enemies made it very hard to work the trade …and most of all I just could not stay with a man or anybody else who always was taking the name of God in vain. So I came here to help these people out. I am at present in shop acting as Supt. of the plant. I shall be here until the latter part of March, at which time I shall go to …, Ala. April 1st as salesman and sales manager for the Georgia Marble Co., the man whom we get a reading on last July while I was in Camden, Ark. [779-14, Par. 3-A].”

R6. 3/31/27 EC’s letter to [779]:

Dear [779]:-

It looks like we never get straightened out when once things go wrong, but soon after I came back from Florida I had to go up to New York for a few days. That broke into appointments and readings again - but I found I had the opportunity yesterday to get yours in for you [779-16], and I am in hopes it will prove worth while.

I know you are glad to be with the folks for a few days again, and now you’ll be close enough that no doubt you’ll run in home every week end. I hope things work out alright, and that you will soon be all together, with everything going fine.

When you get settled down, and have the opportunity, I hope you will let me hear from you more often, and I think now - for a while at least - I will have the opportunity to keep up with my correspondence in better shape. You know I can’t do it when I’m running around and have so much on my hands.

Things are beginning to get on the boom here. The big hotel opens Monday. A lot of street construction, and sea wall, and board walk, is to be built, and the place in general is taking on the air of a real resort. I believe, with the character of people that will be attracted to the Beach with the opening of the hotel, it will make everything take on a different outlook.

My trip to new York, of course, was in the interest of trying to get things started here. We will have a meeting here sometime in the early summer, and I hope - by or before that time - we will have things going. Of course we can’t ever tell just what’s going to happen. We are keeping mighty busy - appointments are running five to six weeks in advance, and we seem to be doing a whole lot of good. I certainly do wish that you had had the opportunity to get by here before you went back to Alabama, but I’m in hopes it isn’t going to be so very long before you’ll have the opportunity to get over this way.

R7. 4/25/27 EC’s letter to [779]:

Mr. [779], Georgia Marble Works, P.O. Box 141, …, Ala.

Dear [779]:-

As always, I was mighty glad to have yours of the 14th. I was very sure that you were kept on the go most of the time, and know things happen with you that you can’t answer just as they do with me at times. This is the first opportunity I’ve had to get to letter writing for several days. In fact, I had to send out two or three readings without sending a word with them, for the lack of the opportunity to dictate anything. We certainly are kept busy. I had to work all day yesterday. Our special requests come in so fast now that it looks like it takes most of our time to keep up with them. We seem to be doing a lot of good. I certainly hope that we are.

Well, I’m in hopes now that you have gotten settled, and that things are going to work around in a way and manner that will be wholly satisfactory to all of you. I know your family is delighted to have you home more often, even as much as you are delighted to be there. I realize something of what that means, and we are very fortunate at the present time to have one of my sisters and her husband living here at the Beach. They came up from Florida Saturday a week ago, and will be here through the summer, provided he is able to “cabbage on” to something that will keep him busy, as he says, whether he makes any money or not. [Mr. & Mrs. J. J. (Ola Cayce) Crume]

Well, I am in hopes you have been able to take enough of the suggestions as were given you [in 779-16] to get yourself all straightened out, and I hope you are feeling a whole lot better before now.

Be sure and let us hear from you, for I’ll be kind of anxious until I know you’ve gotten everything straightened out and in shape.

I certainly am anxious to see that boy [318] of yours. I reckon, though, he’ll be a great big boy before I have the opportunity. It looks like I’m getting tied down more and more.

We made application to-day for the charter for the institution. As soon as we get this through, why we’ll have to have a meeting, and got all the trustees, and so forth, together and make a start. You know, it’s the first time an application for a charter of this character has ever been made in the United States, and if it is granted it will be something unique. One thing, at least - we are making history! And I am in hope will be able to do a whole lot of good.

I’m glad to say we are all fairly well here, and I hope you and yours are all feeling fine. Let me hear from you whenever you have the opportunity. With kindest personal regards from all,

R8. 8/7/27 “Well, we have at last gotten moved to …, [Ala.], and I think we all like it better than we thought. We have a nice little house out on … St., all by ourselves, too, the first time we ever lived by ourselves since married, and we find it so nice and quiet. I have been working pretty hard, too. Things have been fair considering conditions and the season of the year. I am at home every night, I can run out in the territory and back by night, which makes it very pleasant to me, and, too, the sales end of the work is altogether up to my planning, which seems to be in keeping with the last readings we had as to which of the three places to accept, the answer being the place that would give more time to sales work and that would keep me more with the family.”

R9. 9/29/27 He obtained 427-3, Life Reading for his oldest son.

R10. 1/19/28 Letter in re approaching visit of Mr. and Mrs. Cayce shows Mr. [779]‘s name on letterhead as Sales Manager.

R11. 4/2/28 Letter from [779] to EC: ”…I am going to order this Stone [corner stone for hospital] from the Quarry shipped direct to the Beach, but before doing so I am herewith enclosing a pencil sketch of the sizes, I figured in order to get the lettering on. It would have to be the size as shown on sketch, made in two pieces, so when put together it will measure 2’0” square in length and 1’6” height. The reason for making stone in sections is because of such a large stone it would take and would weigh about 1200 lbs. Size would be 2-0 x 2-0 x 1-6 and would have to be cut away in the back of stone to keep from projecting out from the wall, as I am sure the wall will not be two feet thick, and as suggested the stock in this store will only be 2 inches thick and to be set in the wall and will not be over 200 lbs. for the two pieces…”

R12. 7/7/28 “Well at last it is shipped. You will note on B/L is dated the 3rd. I hope same will reach you in due time and in good shape. Most of all I hope it will be suitable to the building in every way and did not cause any inconvenience in being delayed in shipment.

“Before sending the inscription in to the quarries I first drew up a full sized detail of stone and lettering and sent in to be put on as I thought would look best with the sand blown lettering which will show up and look to a better advantage from a distance. With the proper light or shadow on the stone it will appear that the letter are raised.”

R14. 7/30/28 EC’s letter to [779]:

Dear [779]:-

I have yours of the 27th. Mighty glad to hear from you, and glad you enjoyed the reading [254-42]. We will be mighty glad to send you anything else you think you will be interested in. There may be a great deal said about the reading, especially about those that are gathering for what, we might say, is a re-establishing of the work done eons ago. Miss Gladys is compiling a history of all the Life Readings, with special reference to this Egyptian period. I’m sure when you have a chance to read this you’ll find it very interesting. Of course when we are able to get this together, all the members and those interested will have this information. It will be sometime, of course, before we will be able to get it published, but it WILL be published as part of the educational work from the library. Of course you were associated with us at that time, as were also Mrs. [780], [427] and [318] - and the most interesting thing is to watch the reactions of individuals that are not aware at the time that they were associated, and see just what part of the work they are so interested in. We will get more of this later on, when we are able to get more together.

Now, regarding the cornerstone - or, as we might say, the frontispiece for the hospital - I don’t think, [779], that we will go to the expense of having a new stone entirely. What I think we want is another stone about the same size of the ones we have, to go WITH these. This would be 18” x 28” - which would possibly fit better - possibly make it a little bit longer and we can fit it above the others and we will outline the triangle with raised brick, then get a stone finish around these - that will make it look alright, without going to that extra expense. I’d rather have you all do it, for then it would be just exactly alike. I don’t know whether these people here would have the machine to do it with or not. Then, too, I’d rather have you to have a hand in it. Give them the order for it and let them ship it as soon as it is possible. It may hold up the finish, but we should have it - if possible - by the 8th of September at the latest. Don’t you think this would work out alright? As you remember, the reading said, “On the first, the second, and the next,” etc. I took that to mean that it took into consideration those two stones already made. So if you will have it done and send ME the bill for same, we will be able then to use it with the others.

The work on the building is going along very nicely. Some delays, of course, as always - but pretty soon now we’ll have things looking “up”. We are to have a meeting next Saturday, and I’m in hopes we will have enough done to make some showing.

Maybe you can hurry these people up on this stone, I think, if you tell them the circumstances, and when you get ready to ship it, let them express it. I’d rather pay that difference than to wait so long.

Yes, I do wish too that we could have the chance to talk everything over. We will try to get to that sometime before very long. You know I think you all will have to arrange some way or another to have me come down there and talk to you on something.

Yes, all that were present at that reading [254-42] tell me that it was one of the most sacred, most awe-inspiring occasions of their lives. It IS unusual. We don’t know as we understand it yet.

Yes, we have quite an interesting [Sunday School] class. We have more transients, of course, than we have local people. I have been helping out in the Presbyterian church, not because I’m a Presbyterian, but I want to do all the good I can, wherever I can, and we haven’t a Christian church here. They need helpers, and I hope that I’m helping out sometime. I have many of them to tell me they get a great deal more out of being at S.S. than they do the preacher, but I think they just want to be nice to me.

Well, you write to me whenever you can, [779]. Don’t make it so long between times. Know you are busy, and that it’s hard to drum up business these days - but we are always mighty glad to hear from you.

R15. 9/5/28 EC’s letter to [779]:

Dear [779]:-

We are in receipt of the stone. Certainly think its very fine and in keeping with the other work. Also received from the marble works the bill for same, and I’m enclosing check. Please receipt and return, as we will want to keep this for our files for future reference.

When I wrote you a few days ago I told you I’d send you a picture or two when we got some snaps. I enclose these, so that you may see just what’s going on at the present time. The last few days work has been held up on account of the weather. Should be under roof though in another week. Then we can possibly go along a little faster.

Certainly want to thank you for attending to this for me, [779], and - as I said when I last wrote you - I wish it were possible for you to be here when we put these in the building.

All of us are pretty well except Mr. L. B. He’s not getting along good at all. Has taken a very bad cold and isn’t feeling good at all. Has suffered considerably - coughs awfully bad. All the rest are pretty well.

R16. 2/20/29 EC’s letter to Mr. [779] in re their previous conversation and correspondence concerning the Cayce seal in pink granite for fountain memorial for EC’s mother in front of Cayce Hospital [See 254-48 Reports]:

I certainly have been mighty busy since I last saw you, but we are beginning to get things straightened out - and are now waiting on this, that and the other to get opened up. Should be ready for this next week anyway, so will say we will be open by the first of March if not before. They haven’t waited for us to be open and running, for they have insisted on having the treatments. Our first patient [470] came down on the 11th - he went home well on the 19th. Quick work! But, as he said, you DO get results if you do exactly like it says do. He came down from Philadelphia. We have quite a number of others on the list, and some I think that will be in the building as soon as we are able to get it open.

I’m just in receipt, too, of the sample of pink granite. This is very pretty I think - VERY pretty, but it certainly does LOOK like that’s an awful price for a little stone two feet by two feet, even though it has that polish and carving on it. I thought they didn’t want MORE than that including the pedestal. I went in to see the people that you suggested I see. They showed me some mighty pretty work. They haven’t as yet given me a price (Lawson & Newton) but they said they would in the next day or two. I certainly like that sand blown finish - believe it would be pretty. They showed me quite a number of samples of pink granite - I don’t think they showed me any quite as PINK as this, but I do like this sample you sent me. They showed me, however, one that was very much coarser grain and has more dark streaks in it - you know what I mean I suppose. What do you think of that? That looks like it would show up mighty well for a thing of the kind. I’m sure you can go ahead with the drawings and get them ready, and we will see that we get just exactly what we want, and then we will be ready for them by the time we are ready to give the contract to someone for it. We want it, whatever it is - of course I don’t want to have to pay any more than I can help, but that’s what we want I think now. Do you think it would be best that all of them be put in circles? I believe it would, as I think of it - though it may make the one with the world and the one with the zodiac look little bit different, but I believe it would be better. Lawson & Newton, however, insist that for the proper dimensions for the place would be two feet by two feet. In that case, the circle possibly might be TWELVE inches, might it not? or could it? You’ll work it out though I’m sure, and when you get them up why send them to me and if there’s any suggestions I’m sure you won’t mind making it known too, just what we want. I know it’s a big thing to have somebody that will take the pains to work out just WHAT I want - and I appreciate it more than I know how to tell you. We have thought considerable about our conversation since we were there. I don’t know yet just how the thing will work out

• possibly we will know as things go along. We will have a meeting the early part of March and that may com up at that time. Anyhow I’ll keep you posted on the developments.

We had a very nice trip the rest of the way home - though, as we were there - we were crowded for time all along that way. We should have taken about six weeks or two months to make such a trip, rather than three weeks.

Give my regards to the folks and let me hear from you whenever you can. By the way, have you heard anything from Tom Cayce? [Thomas E. Cayce, 1st cousin of EC] I haven’t heard anything from him since I was there. Wish you would phone him, then let me hear from him.
