Salesman, Protestant) This psychic reading given by Edgar Cayce at his office, 115 West 35th Street, Virginia Beach, Va., this 14th day of May, 1929, in accordance with request made by self - Mr. [779].

Time of Reading 4:00 P. M. Eastern Standard Time.

1. GC: You will have before you [779], …, Ala. Also the information as has been given this body in previous business and life readings. You will also have before you his family, home life, and the circumstances and conditions surrounding same. You will also have before you [779]‘s present business associations (J. Thorburn and The Georgia Marble Works of …, Ala.) and the general moral, ethical and environments of the same and the conditions that are detrimental to [779] and to the success of the business. You will please tell this body in full as to how he is progressing, and what would the forces advise as to the proper course for this body to pursue under the present conditions and circumstances to bring about connection or conditions that will be more satisfactory, happier, contentment, satisfied mind, and a permanent location with success for himself. You will answer the questions I will ask you regarding same.

2. EC: Yes, we have the body, [779]. This we have had before. Also that information as has been given the body as concerning its associations and relations, both as to business, as to family, and as conditions in general respecting the development morally, mentally, physically, financially.

3. Now, much may be said respecting conditions in every wise concerning the conditions at present - variations in that as was given, variations in that as has come about, apparently, in adverse to that as was stipulated, and those conditions that are unsatisfactory and those that cause turmoil, trials, at the present time. The multiplying of words as respecting this might, or might not, mean much or little. That to be met is the conditions as they exist. There seems little opportunity in the present of the complete or full settlement with the body for considerations as have been want to be made, yet were the body to withdraw from the association altogether at once, this would leave the body in a very unsatisfactory way in a pecuniary way; yet there is almost as little satisfaction in attempting to go on with the present surroundings as there would be to attempt to seek others, even from a cold trail.

4. Then, the better condition would be to accept conditions as they exist for the present, taking hold of the proposition as part salesman, part indoor work, and through the regular channels of trade and of papers, magazines, of the trade reestablish or seek connections in the district wherein the body has been given that in these districts, channels, or conditions, would the better association, the more satisfactory conditions come and be for the body. Would the body follow these, we find - even as has been given - that the body would be the more content, the more satisfied, the more satisfactory conditions coming into the life, for the self, for those loved once dependent upon same, and for the development of the body in the mental, physical, and spiritual way and manner. Then, do that, for the conditions at present. Ready for questions.

5. (Q) Should the present conditions not permit change - (A) (Interrupting) This has just been given.

6. (Q) It has been given in previous readings that this body should locate East Coast - (A) (Interrupting) This has just been given, as to how, the way, and the manner in which the body should go about to seek the associations, locations, of such a condition for the body to serve in, through, with, for, by, and how.

7. (Q) Will the entity success in receiving from the Georgia Marble Works the balance of profits - (See 779-14, 3-A which warned of just such an entanglement.) (A) (Interrupting) This has just been given, that only in keeping in touch with and for the time being, will the body be able to gain any of a COMMENSURATE amount from this source.

8. (Q) Is there a possibility of this body becoming associated with the work of Edgar Cayce or the Institute? If so, in what capacity and when may same be expected? (A) This may be expected when the body is in the conditions and surroundings that will enable the body to become associated and connected with same.

9. (Q) It was given in previous readings [See 779-10] that this entity would receive much of the worlds goods in the year 1928. Please tell why - (A) (Interrupting) Has the body acted in the way and manner as was given for the body to act through those periods when the body should be in the position to receive same? [See 779-11 through 779-15.] Answer these in self - SEE the variations, and WHY these have come about. We are through for the present.

R1. 5/17/29 EC’s ltr. to Mr. [779]:

Dear [779]:-

“Well, what do you think of the information we got this time? It looks to me as if you are going to be able to get into this district, sooner or later; yet, apparently, the Forces choose to make you do something and work it yourself. Whether this is from past experiences, or what not, I don’t know. If I could sit down and talk to you about it, I might be able to arrive at some sort of conclusion.

“We haven’t forgotten about the proposition here, and we are seriously considering the taking up of the farm - but haven’t come to any definite conclusion as yet. Should there be any prospect, why you know that I will let you know about it. You know I’ll keep in touch with you and let you know. We haven’t gotten far enough along to take a reading on it, to see who and how it should be conducted - but it will be brought up in our meeting in June or July, and we wouldn’t do anything before Fall as respecting same.

“I want to hear from you right along, and if there are at any time any helps, or helpful hints I might be able to make, don’t hesitate to call on me.

“I think this has been one of the busiest weeks of my whole life, in every respect and way - though I’m hoping that I’ll just be able to hold up under it and keeping the busier be able to help more people.

“I’m sure you enjoyed having the people with you from …, at your Sunday School class. I wish you could drop in on us sometime here. They seem to think we have a very good class. It isn’t so large in numbers, but we are doing a little work.

“Work at the hospital is going along fairly well. We are gradually getting in shape, and gradually getting straightened out in things. Hope we will be able to do a whole lot of good. There seems to be a great deal of interest shown in Mr. Blumenthal’s addresses from Sunday to Sunday, and I have been asked to address the local Rotary Club, also one of the civic clubs in Norfolk. So, all in all, I reckon we are doing something, and time will tell just the reaction that will come from it.

R2. 5/24/29 [779]‘s ltr. to EC:

My dear Cayce:-

“Both the reading and your letter received on the same day (Monday) and you bet I sure was glad to get it and to know what I should do. After I did not receive it the latter part of the week I did not know what could be the trouble, but after reading your letter saying that that had been one of your busiest weeks you ever had.

“Cayce I am unable to find words to express in full measure my appreciation for your sweet and untiring service and efforts in trying to help me in a great way. I want to thank you for it.

“I have read the reading over and over many times, and I am well pleased with it, even if there be some information that I do not as yet fully understand, but I shall continue to study it until I get the real meaning I hope.

“Yes it seems from the reading that I will have a chance some time to locate in that district, but no time is given as to any definite time. I hope it will be much sooner than I expect. It do look if the forces are trying to make me do some certain thing or work. I wish I knew just what. Wish it was so that we could set down together and see if we could work out some conclusion about this.

“I know the part of the reading that I understand are very true in my case, and I quickly accept it all as being true, and will surely comply and apply it as far as I am able and understand it, and no doubt all will work out just as it says. I have came to this conclusion Cayce, that is we treat light those words or things that seems to us a minor thing, whereas they all are major things and must be so treated and acted upon as such, so I am convinced that if we do just as said no more and no less all will be well. I have gotten this lesson from the last reading as I understand it in my own case in regards to question #5 [See 779-17, Par. 9-A] as to why I did not receive that as was given for 1928. And the answer is a very peculiar one and one that I don’t quite get as to why and how I should acted to have been in a position to receive same. I certainly thought I was applying myself to the conditions, but I now believe that I did not or else it would have been now as it said. The only thing that I can think of that I must have failed on is because of deficient on my part in carrying out the suggestions correctly, and for the lack of sufficient stigma and will power to put it over, and because not treating all parts and words as BIG things as mention[ed] above. So that is the only thing I can think that must brought those things about when I should have been in the position to receive. So that time and part seems to be gone, and I am to take my medicine for it.

“Now the thing for me to do is to pay close attention to the present time and conditions, this I will do to my very best ability.

“As I understand it I am to seek connections in the district where has been given through trade papers and trade magazines and written applications. Still hold on to what I have and by working part time in shop and part time as salesman or any other thing comes to hand, until such a time comes that I can locate in the districts and connections, then things would be more satisfactory for me and loved ones.

“I shall be very glad that you give me your understanding of this reading in your own way of expressing it so that I will not be making a Ball up on this one. I must make a go of it, and that is no if’s and and’s about it. A summarily or the thing that I am to do at present will be appreciated when you have the time to study this out. Now and the future is what I will work on and let the past go and for get it.

“You will also note the Ans. to question #2 [See 779-17, Par. 6-A] the words in, through, with, for by, and how. I would like for you to kinda explain this, I don’t get the meaning.

“I am glad to note that the hospital is going along nicely, and are getting thing in shape. I am sure that Blumenthals addresses are enjoyed very much. I did not know that he made an address every week.

“I see, so you are to address some clubs too, well I don’t know of a better talk and a better man than that of you, and I know all will enjoy it and likely to get something that will be helpful to them in a way that they know not why and how. Don’t over work yourself Cayce, take care of your self, and don’t try to do more than three or four mens work.

“Yes when you all get to the matter of taking a reading on the farm I will be glad to know about it, and the workings of it. Yes the Ans. to the question in the reading about my being connected with the work. [See 779-17, Par. 8-A] I don’t get just what is meant by ‘This may be expected when the body is in the conditions and surroundings that will enable the body to become associated and connected with same’. Can you tell me what this really means as you see and understand it?”

R4. 8/1/29 Ltr. from EC to [779]:

Dear [779]:

I suppose you have given me up as about lost, and its mighty near true. I have been doing my doggonest to work this thing out some way or another, to get you up here. I have three or four times come mighty near doing it. I still feel like that I’ve got it, but I’m afraid to tell you so until I have the thing worked out better than I have at present - but let me say this - I’m not going into even try to make any explanation to you as yet. I have been so awfully busy, people are coming into the hospital - four or five came in yesterday, and we have been having our annual meeting - all the trustees were here except one - and we have been just getting everything straightened out; consequently haven’t been way able to even think straight - but I’m keeping one thing back in my mind - that [779]‘s coming up here yet! So, I don’t know just how, where or when - but don’t you worry about it - but you just keep thinking and don’t make plans too far ahead - don’t tie yourself up to where you can’t get away. Of course, if circumstances are so that you have it to do, why do it and then when the right time comes it will turn out alright. It’s like with Mr. Shroyer - whom you met in Dayton. It looked like he had gotten so far away it would never be possible for him to get back, yet now he is right in the middle of it, having to fight both ways to keep his head up to where he finds out what he’s doing even. So I know it’s going to be with you. I don’t know just when, nor how its going to happen - but I know it’s going to. We just got through with a six day business session. Most of the rules and regulations were laid out at this time regarding the hospital. Of course, we already had those for the Association - but the Association work is so much bigger than just the hospital - though the hospital is a man sized job for at least a dozen or fifteen people, and then some! but when you see our year book, or review, which will possibly come out between now and the first of the year, you will realize - as well as the public in general - that this thing has already assumed proportions that are almost inconceivable. And when you see how people are appealing and appealing for understanding - but I needn’t tell you all this

• I know you have seen it long ago, possible better than most of them. That it has taken you almost over the fire, with just seared threads holding you off, is not in condemnation - rather that you may be better acquainted - for we must oft remember that “Though he were the Son, yet learned HE obedience through the things which He suffered.”

Our crowds seem constantly on the increase at out lectures. We are outgrowing our building in every respect. New quarters have to be prepared already. This, too, will take time - but remember [779]‘s going to have a part in it yet!

Let me hear from you, won’t you? That’s the best explanation I can give you to the reading - [779]‘s going to be here yet!

R5. 8/6/29 [779]‘s letter to EC:

Dear Cayce:-

Yours of the 1st received and read with pleasure and interest. You bet I had thought something must have happen to you, because I could not hear from you.

Cayce I want to say that I sure enjoyed reading your letter, I don’t know why, somehow it kinda helped me up somehow, as if it had been a tonic. I am so happy to see that you say that you have been trying to get me up there, and have come so near to it, and still think you have it, but just waiting to work the thing out to a finer point. You do not know what a gratification it to hear this, in fact no better consolation could any one ask for.

I feel that you must have some kinda inkling or inside dope that I know not that makes you pretty sure about the matter. Any way it makes me happy to think and look forward to the time when I shall be there. We all are so hopped up over the thing until Cayce is asking me when I am going to The Beach.

I shall do my best to take your advice and not to worry, and not to make plans to far ahead where I can’t get away. At present time I am tied down for the next 60 or 90 days, after then I will be pretty well untied, as to where I can get away with a little notice in advance. My Boss left today one week ago for the Old country and will not be back until about Oct. 1st or a little later, so you see I am holding the whole bag, too much for one fellow to do well, and not enough for more than one.

It is a pleasure to learn that Mr. Shroyer is back in the fight strong, so there is a chance for me maybe. It looks that we must go through a certain amount of trials, experiences, and tribulations before we can fit ourselves for the real things of life that counts most, if that be the case, then I can well appreciate those conditions that was, and is now and will be.

It makes me very happy to learn that things are working nicely now, and that people are coming into the hospital, no doubt the hospital will be many many mens size job as well as the work of the Association as a whole. I would not be surprise to see a very great growth and a much larger developement come about much earlier and in a larger way than may ever thought of even to those that are closer associated with the workings than I am. When a man, country, nation or an organization works and keeps the Will of the Father, no power is greater than He. So I fully believe this work is just being born and will grow to be a world wide thing and much quicker than any expect. Why? Because truth and results is what counts, and no arguments can retard it.

Well let me hear from you every time you have a chance to drop me a few lines, don’t let it be as long as this last time. As per your letter I will keep back in my mind that will get there yet, I will not rush things to the end of changing places until I see how the East Coast works out.

R6. 12/31/29 EC’s letter to [779]:

Dear [779]:-

I have yours of the 26th. I am indeed sorry to know that conditions are so much up in the air, or demoralized, at the present time. Its a very hard thing, for me to say just what the program is going to be here, or how it is going to work out. We KNOW we are going to have to have a good many people with us that we can absolutely rely upon.

This is something of what I have in mind. Now, I don’t know how this would appeal to you and Mrs. [780], or whether it would at all or not. We are starting, possibly within the next thirty days, the new building program, in the extension of our work here. This, at this time, will be along educa- tional lines. In fact, we will open (this, of course, keep to yourself - until the proper time for announcement - but)

• we will open a university next September. It will be necessary, in the meantime, to build a clubhouse for the use of the members of the Association through the summer. In connection with same there will also have to be built quarters in which the various instructors may be taken care of, as well as temporary quarters for the institution itself
• which will require at least a large assembly hall, and twelve to fifteen classrooms. Now, adjoining these places we are going to have to have places to take care of these people. Would you and Mrs. [780] consider taking such a proposition? Suppose you and I go in the business together, on the side? Then, as we develop along with it, why we will be able to see that things are taken care of alright. If we will do this, we will possibly have to make some sort of arrangements to be able to commence the work by at least February, or anyhow by the first of April, or - at the very latest - the first of June. However, should things not develop along the lines as you would like them, if you could make arrangements to get to this part of the country in working your regular line until this would open up - then, as things develop, if you feel that you would rather take care of the farm, as was first suggested - though, of course, with the university, it may be possible that there will be technical men, because that will be part of the training - but will necessarily be under the supervision of someone to look after it.

Now, this is a great big program, of course - as you can surmise. I can’t give you all the details, because it is hard to write them in a letter, and then they haven’t all been settled. I’m hoping to be able to go to a meeting at the end of the week, in which most of the plans will be laid out for this new development. This, of course, is not taking away from the present institution - rather building ABOUT it the whole broad program as has so often been laid out, and is of course being operated by the same Association. This will be the institution of the Association, the same as the hospital is, conducted by the same Board of Directors.

Have I said enough so you will get an idea of what it is about? Of course, I understand it means something like you and Mrs. [780] going back in the boarding house business, if we come to make it very plain - that is, for the present, but if this will assist you - and you think that would be along your line, why let me know. I’m not saying for you to do this. I’m saying what’s insight, or POSSIBLY in sight. I know its got to develop in the next five or six months, and we have got to have some people to look after all the various parts of it. Let me know right away.

R7. 1/29/30 [Wednesday night] EC’s letter to [779]:

Dear [779]:-

I have yours of the 12th, [saying they were interested, wanted more details, etc.] and should have answered sooner - but I had expected to answer it in person sometime this week. However, circumstances came up which prevented my making the trip just at this time. I’m hoping now that I’ll be able to make it sometime the latter part of next month. It will be very much better, I am sure, to talk this whole question over with you all in person, than trying to explain the whole thing to you by letter. I am still hoping I can work this out. If I could talk it over with you, why I could make you understand it. It would be a hard thing to try to explain. It isn’t, in the ordinary sense, a boarding house - no; but we will leave it at that until I can get a chance to talk to you.

We are keeping mighty busy. Have quite a number of people in the hospital, and of course some are coming and some going. All that are going are going away practically or wholly well. Those coming in are still having high hopes. The great question is being able to take care of great numbers who are making requests for information. We just can’t do it, and the great question is - what will we do about it?

R8. 3/6/30 EC wrote that such a change at the Beach would not be possible before Sept. - Oct., if [779] had anything else in view sooner he’d better take it.

R9. 5/14/30 [779]‘s letter to EC:

Dear Cayce:-

Your letter received and glad to note that you still expect to get this way soon. Hope you will be able to make it before I leave here. If nothing happens I expect to leave here at noon time Sunday March 30th and will arrive in Raleigh, N.C. next day about 8 o’clock and be ready for business Tuesday April 1st. I do hope that things will move off in good shape for me. I sure am going to do my best to put it over. Some how I feel that I am making the right move for the present time. After looking over the last reading it tells me how to go about the matter to get along the East Coast, and this connection was made about the way as given and I feel that it is getting nearer the East than I am at present and may be other things will come up at a later date for the complete location. The very chief thing I want above all right now is a contented mind and peace. I sure have had a taste of brim stone for the last year, so I am very happy to make the change now even if am to given up a lots in going away from the family for a while, and we are trying to see it is as being the best and leading to the location for the best in every respect.

R10. 5/9/30 [779]‘s letter to EC:

Dear Cayce:-

Well here I am again with some more of my trouble The Boss and myself had a long talk this after noon, and we went into details pretty well, and told me what hard time he was having to keep the business going. That he was borrowing money to keep open and that the banks may at any time close down on him and fail to advance any thing more, and if the case be it would mean close up, and thought best to tell me this so I could make some arrangements to get something. He thought that business would pick up this spring, but instead it has continue gotten worse and that expense would have to be cut some how. Banks all over the territory has been closing for the last 60 days until business stopped in the stone business.

Now you can imagine how this made me feel and the kind of position same put me in with no job, no money to keep body together, and have no idea what will be the out come.

So the only hope I now as I have always had is that I can depend on you to help me out in the real time of need in telling me where and what to do under these conditions. So I want to know if there is any possible way and chance for us to work this out or to arrange to take readings to get me on the right road and straighten out some how?

I was so in hope that things would hold out here until something would develop there, but that is now out of the question, and I must get busy at once and locate something, even it be shining boots. It seems that fate is in for me. I don’t know why. The old saying is that it is darkest just before day break. I hope that will prove true this time, because it is sure enough dark now to me.

The only thing I thought to do is to get busy, so I have wrote the other Marble people in Montgomery to see if it be possible to use me. I knew you were very busy and did not want to call on you and take away from the other work unless I just had to defend and protect the loved ones. So I should be hearing from the Montgomery people right away as I have ask them to wire me their Ans. I have not wrote wife about this yet for fear it will cause her much worry.

Cayce you never will know how bad I hate to write you this letter, but as you know and will understand and appreciate my position I feel that you can help lighten my burden so far as possible. Let me hear from you at once. I am as ever yours.

R11. 5/10/30 EC’s letter to [779]:

[EC’s letter before he rec’d [779]‘s of the 9th:]

Dear [779]:-

Well, we certainly did enjoy having you with us. Seemed very much like old times to have you sitting around. Am glad to see you are looking so well.

Guess I’ve DONE it! I have rented the house down in front of the hospital on the ocean, [GD’s note: The same house EC later moved into himself, after the hospital closed.] expecting you and the family to move in the first of September. It will be used this summer, but you will want to be in in September. I think we can arrange to take care of the thing. It rents for 1,000 for June, July and August - so you have some idea of what things are here. I'm trying to have a little work done on the place, and then along the latter part of August or first of September you will come up and we will see what we will have to do to get the thing in shape for you - so you can do something with it. Then you will be on hand and on the grounds, and we will get things worked out some way or another. How's that? Now, it's signed and sealed, and they are already working on the place. We will have to pay about 150 per month - that sounds like a heap for a fourteen room house, but I think we can stretch it around enough. I’ll stick with you if you’ll stick with me. I’ll see it through.

I haven’t been able to get away, except for just a little business trip up in New York, but I’m feeling pretty fair. Wish you all could be here now, and have this through this summer - but I know it wouldn’t be the best - but if you come in September, why you can have all the time getting straightened up before getting ready for the rush - if it don’t rush even until next summer. That may sound like a conglomeration of nothing - but we will have the [779] family at Virginia Beach anyhow - what do you say?

Dear [779]:-

I have yours of the 9th, but had already written you as to what was the best thing - as I could see - for the situation at the present time. You already have this letter, no doubt, by this time. Do you think that you would be able to handle the situation until September? or do you want to undertake to make some sort of arrangements between now and then?

R13. 5/14/30 Wednesday Night [779]‘s letter to EC:

Dear Cayce:- I have just returned from a two days trip on the road, and on returning I found your letters dated the 10th and 12th. I sure was glad to get them, they have helped me a lot already, and I feel better to have them, and I am so happy to know that you have made the arangements for the place and you may rest assure that WE will be ready and you can depend and count on me to stick with you through it. All we want is a chance to get at it.

I have been in a awful twist since writing you. I knew that or it looked to me that these people here would not be able to stand the expense to keep me with the conditions as they are, and I knew it would come sooner or later, so Monday we had another talk and the Boss told me he was about at the end and that he would have to release me this week end, but I told him that I thought he should keep me till the last of this month because I had nothing in to do and felt sure that he would want me to give him as much time if I was going to leave him of my own accord, so he thought I was right and I will be here until the last of this month. I have nothing to do and I know it will be mighty hard to get something now in my line of work. But I will take any thing to tie us over until we GO THE BEACH.

I had a letter waiting for me from the Montgomery concern, and they says that they are not having enough to keep the one man busy. So nothing will be doing there with me. My plans is now to try again at Norfolk, but it’s doubtful there because I dropped in when I was through there on my visit to you. I am now in hopes to make a trip to Norfolk this next week. We have a job to set there in cemetery and I think the Boss will let me see after it. If so I will run down to see you just for a little while, as I don’t expect I will see you again before leaving here, unless I can locate something something close. Even if I don’t go to erect that work I will try to see you any way. Are you expecting to be away from the Beach any time soon? If so will try to get there before you get away.

Cayce you don’t know how happy I am to know of the chance to get there, and I can hardly wait to get Wife word she is as anxious as I am and she will also be happy. Had a letter from her to day and she wanted to know how things was going. She don’t as yet know I have nothing to do after the last of this month, but I had wrote her that things didn’t look very good. I am going to write her tonight and tell her so it will not be too much a shock.

Please Please accept my many thanks for your most untiring interest you have shown in me and for what you have done for me in so many ways and I hope to be able to show you some day that your interest and love for us was not in vain and will try to prove myself worthy of your confidence.

R14. 6/10/30 EC’s letter to [779]:

Dear [779]:-

Just a line to let you know that we are still around here; not very many, but still hoping.

Glad you got home in time to see your girl graduate. Gertrude and I were in Lexington - enjoyed the little visit there a great deal - saw Hugh Lynn graduate.

Expect to leave tomorrow for a few days in New York. Don’t know just what the outcome of this trip will be. Hope, though, that everything is going to work along alright; seems they are to get started pretty soon with the building, and ought to have it in time.

The boys [GD’s note: Joseph and Frederick Starr, brothers of Mrs. Samuel J. Benstock [Wife of the Benstock Drug Co. man], who were remaining here for the summer for their health and trying to pay their way by running the cottage.] have gotten the place pretty well fixed up, and I presume will do pretty good, if we have any season. [They did NOT do well. Only a few people stayed there, among them Thomas Sugrue who was on the staff that summer.]

Quite bad weather the last few days, and of course this has shut things off considerable.

Dear [779]:-

Things have been in such a jumble, I haven’t known what to write to you, nor how to write you - and I don’t know yet. If some of the changes that apparently are going to take place, do - I believe we are going to have to make a change in our plans. I know this is as discouraging to you and your family as it is to me. Rest assured, however, that just as soon as I know, definitely, what the decision of the Board is regarding the university and its developments, I’ll let you know and I think, then, if Mrs. [780] is to come up, why she ought to as soon as she can - but if they are going to alter or change the plans, why I don’t know what to say. I don’t think it would be even good judgement for us to undertake the thing in the way we have spoken of, but don’t let this disturb you any more than possible. I’ll let you hear from me as soon as I can. Don’t worry over it, because it won’t do you any good, as it isn’t doing me any - and you know how I am worried.

R16. 7/18/30 EC’s letter to [779]:

Dear [779]:-

Yours of the 11th received. I suppose you think that you have been kept somewhat in the dark as to developments, especially as it has meant so much to you and the future for yourself and family. I have delayed somewhat in answering, attempting to fix in my mind - with the developments - as to just what was the right and proper thing to say, and for you to do under the circumstances. This is the situation to date: Possibly if Mrs. [780] was to come up, I could talk it over with her - for it is a very hard thing to explain, or to even consider conditions of this character or nature, by letter. In the first place, however, they have discontinued the building program, and when it’s built - that is, the university building - it will not be on the site in front of the hospital. This, I think, has been fully decided. Consequently, it makes the value of the place, as a rooming place for students, or professors, or help, as worthless - and as to whether there could be enough of the transient induced to go there for stay, to make it pay, that is a great big question. As you know, I told you there were a couple of boys from New York that were undertaking to use it as such this summer. It has been a failure, as far as the financial success, for them - and of course there isn’t sufficient overflow from the hospital visitors, with the nurses’ home open, to insure any help from that source. So, I am wondering if it would not be a great big undertaking to take a place at that price, with that situation staring us in the face. Just when they will go ahead with the building of the university on a permanent site, is very much of a question at this time, owing to the financial conditions in the country everywhere.

Now, that is the situation, briefly put. If it would not be too much of a strain or expense for Mrs. [780] to come up, I’d be very glad if she would - so that we could talk the thing over. I’m willing to do anything and everything that is possible, but I - of course - cannot insure you of a place for yourself, or for the boy [427], or for any of the rest.

As I said, I would see you through with the house - for as long as you wanted to undertake it - but a house doesn’t do any good for something to eat nor to wear, nor does it satisfy one’s peace of mind - unless they are certainly very, very sure they are working toward an ideal, and are willing to suffer for same. I know you’ve got to look after the material. That’s why it is such a hard thing to say just what is the thing to advise you, or what is the proper thing for you to do. Conditions have become such that it has become necessary that we cut off several who have been, and who are at present, associated with the work. The purchasing agent and yard superintendant, the secretary, assistant at telephone, the bookkeeper (who is my brother-in-law) [Luther J. Hesson, husband of Sarah Cayce], and one of the nurses; although the hospital is full to overflowing. These conditions will NOT remain. The ones that are on the ground, of course, will be in line for the development. Whether one wants to go hungry waiting for that development, is the question. So, now, you all talk it over - and if it isn’t too big an expense, and Mrs. [780] would like to look over the situation, let me know.

Don’t think I don’t fully appreciate your position. Of course, that is one of the many things that are worrying me - but I’m in hopes that it will all straighten out with the least amount of trouble for you and yours.

My Dear Cayce:-

“About three weeks ago I sent you drawings of the stone [See Source File Key #254 for drawings re 254-48] for your approval, but up to this time I have not heard any thing from you. As soon as you have passed on these send them to me and I will send them away to be finished.

“Cayce you have been very nice to me and so kind in offering to be of help to me any time I needed you, and you know that I always appreciated this more than I was ever able to express. Again I am going to accept your kind offer and ask if you will give me a reading. Maybe it will take several to get just the information I want.

“My association here with the concern with whom I am at present employer has became very unsatisfactory to myself because of several of agreements made to me has not been complied to, and it has also become more than I can bear Morally-Financially and ethical, and in view of the above facts, and with other facts that I know happen to others who was here previous to my coming here, I fear the same things are going to be pulled on me if I continue here, and will possible cause myself and family embarrassment.

“So due to the above facts and conditions I feel that it is very necessary that I should not stay here any longer than I can get elsewhere.

“Once when you gave a reading [See 779-14, Par. 3-A] about the time I was first thinking of coming here first this same condition of moral an finacnial condition was mention in the reading, but then I could not comprehend just what it was, but now I do know what it mean. Cayce you may say what you please, but when these readings say a thing you might as well put it in your pipe and smoke it, because it is no need to try to eliminate the issue or to think it mean something else, because it is as sure to turn up sooner or later, so why not take it for what it is worth to start with.

“Now I am already to start over again and get things going as they should be and as might be given to work out for the best in all concerned. In previous readings I am told where to live for a better life, but up to this time nothing has presented itself for this. I do not know just how to get started without the information, so I am sure you will fully appreciate my position in the matter and will help out in a way that which is the only safe and sure way for satisfaction and for a location that will be permanent and at the same time receive a more pleasant surroundings and environment.

“Since business are not as good any where as it should be, may be it will be some little time before things will work out right, but I want to get started and have something to look forward to in the future.

“May be in the reading we will see if your proposition you have in mind will develop and be the right thing for me to take, I sure hope it will, and then I know I will be happy.

“I do not know just how to arrange the question so as to get what I want, but I am going to leave that part to you, as I am sure you know much better than I do. The chief question is for a work that I am best suited to or can become suited to do that will work out to an advantage to all concern, location and with whom and where, when and how to apply. If there is any possible chance to locate in that part as given in previous readings.

“If it will not be possible to locate in the part of the country as has been given in previous reading, then may be that I can change to some other line of sales work, and continue to live here in … I have made lots of good friends here and like here fine and would like to stay here if I can, and it not be possible to get in the proper location for permanence, success and content.

“Some how and for some cause which I do not know I got off on the wrong track and it sure has been a rough ride I want to tell you. But I have not lost hopes yet and still believe every thing will work out right yet if I can be put on the right tract, and in the right place and with the right people, and if it be HIS will, I believe He is always ready to do his part, and as before said I don’t know of any other and a more sureer way than the way I am asking you to help me.

“In other words as before stated I am not going to be able to stay with my present concern, and since I have to make the chance I will want to do make the right change that will be jam up. I would not like to go back to shop work if I can possible keep from it, but it that be the thing to do for the better then I shall be glad to do it.

“So I hope you will be able to help me on this right away, so that I can get ready with planning, and too so I will no [know?] about making when, where and how to start.

“Thanking you for your kind consideration. Let me hear from you. All sends regards.”
