This psychic reading given by Edgar Cayce at his home on Arctic Crescent, Virginia Beach, Va., this 27th day of October, 1939, in accordance with request made by the self - Mrs. [808], Active Member of the Ass”n for Research & Enlightenment, Inc.

1. GC: You will give the physical condition of this body at the present time, with suggestions for further corrective measures; answering the questions she has submitted, as I ask them:

2. EC: Yes, we have the body here; this we have had before.

3. As we find, while conditions have improved a great deal from those we have had at various times, in the present there continues to be more of the recurrent disturbances than there were when there was sufficient of the diathermy AND the treatments that were accorded during such periods.

4. These are the disturbances which arise, causing greater disorder in the Periods, or the menstrual flow, and the concurrent conditions as arise from the glandular forces in the present.

5. As we find, there may be the retaking of the adjustments AND the low diathermy to heat the body, STIMULATING the better activity of the glandular forces through the thyroid, especially, and the system as related to the functioning of the glands in reproduction as related to same, or those just above or associated with the kidney area.

6. This stimulation with the heat or diathermy may be done by the osteopath; or it may be done by the use of small quantities of injections that will add the hormones IN the glandular secretion to aid these in functioning in their normal manner.

7. But if the injections are taken, follow the suggestions of the one administering same.

8. If the osteopathic manipulations are taken, take the diathermy and the stimulation for those particular areas; with the diets, the rest and the other activities as we have indicated.

9. Ready for questions.

10. (Q) Would adrenalin injections given by Dr. McCue build up my glands to normal? (A) If they are given properly, and the proper considerations given as to that which has been the depleting of same, in the form of the poisons that caused same.

Then, this would necessarily be followed very closely - in the history as well as the applications made for the adjustments of same.

This would be very well, if that method is chosen by the body.

11. (Q) How often should they be given? (A) As has been indicated, it should be under the SUPERVISION of the one administering same, following the history as well as the general conditions!

R1. 10/30/39 (Monday afternoon) Ltr. to EC from [808]:

Dear Edgar:

Received the reading Saturday morning and your letter this afternoon. Surely appreciate the suggestions and also your letter. Was convinced after receiving the reading that it wasn’t the injections, so went right back to the doctor Saturday afternoon and started all over again. However, it was a different person that went back to him and I believed he sensed it. The first time that I went my my confidence wasn’t with him and he knew it. As a matter of fact he told [2784] that. But when I went back to him Saturday I was sure that he was going to help me. If my Dr. Bolkhardt were living I probably would have decided on the diathermy treatments, but not knowing anyone else it might have been difficult to find someone that would give me the treatments exactly as indicated. Well, anyway, to get back to the injections. Saturday morning I felt as low as I have any time since I’ve been sick. However, I was as sure as I’m sitting here that the injections would pick me up so wanted to start immediately. (I was just as sure before I had the reading that they were responsible for my downfall, so to speak. No one could assure me otherwise. [2784] said he wished that I would listen to him the way I listen to you.) Well, I had an injection Saturday afternoon and Saturday night I slept naturally all night long and yesterday felt much better. Yesterday I had another and although I don’t feel quite as good as I did yesterday, I do feel so much better. He said I’m bound to feel better some days than others but wants me to rest completely during these treatments. I have to get them every day for seven or maybe ten days, depending on the reaction, and then three a week, two a week, and one a week. He said it would take about two months. I’m going ahead with it now because I feel that some force stronger than mere words has sent me there and that it will be the means of building my glands up to normal. The reading has given me that confidence and I wouldn’t have felt the same about it if I had gone ahead without having the reading. I will let you know from time to time how it reacts. It would be so wonderful to feel like a normal human being again - I would be so thankful.

An glad to hear that you are all back to normal again. Mrs. Cayce probably won’t want another vacation again after that one.

I know Tom Sugrue] was delighted to see Mary and the baby. I can well understand why he is crazy about both of them. They are both worth this battle back to normal again that he is having and I’m sure glad to know that he is on the improve. I feel confident that he will get well if your suggestions are followed.

By the way - You remember [1935], whom you gave a reading for while we were at the Beach? Well, her eye has healed up completely and she has no trouble with it at all now. She has been very faithful about the violet ray machine, etc., and feels rewarded for her effort. Also wanted me to tell you how grateful she is.

It is a dark dreary day but I have a good book to read so don’t mind. Martha is fixing a lemon meringue pie for [2784]‘s stepmother and it surely smells good. Wish you were here to sample it.

R2. 11/13/39 (Monday) [808]‘s letter to EC:

Dear Edgar:

I feel terrible for not writing you sooner but every day I would be sure to put it off until the next. I’ve been so busy RESTING that I haven’t time to do anything else!

This siege seems to be lasting longer than we expected but I’m relaxed now and able to rest which is something I’m very thankful for. I went back to work last Monday and lasted the day but the next day I had a relapse so apparently I went back too soon. Now I have made up my mind that I wouldn’t go back until the doctor told me to. He didn’t know that I had gone back. I really think those injections have helped me a lot & have quieted me considerably but the doctor that gave them to me was almost impossible. I just couldn’t stand him any longer so yesterday [2784] drove out to the Sanitarium and asked Dr. Wolohon if he couldn’t give me the injections. He has given them before and said that he would be glad to. Soooooo, I feel very much relieved to know that I won’t have to have this other doctor again. I do hope that this thing makes me well - I am so counting on it. I will let you know from time to time how I’m doing.

I’m so glad that you all are feeling so much better. Did Gertrude go to the eye specialist that she was thinking about going to? If she does go to him I hope that he will do her some good.

Aren’t you all somethin’ getting a new Plymouth! I understand that this strike has kept many people waiting for their new cars and I can imagine what an inconvenience that would be. Do hope you get it soon.

R3. 11/19/39 [808]‘s letter to EC:

I’m still home, doggone it, but really I’m beginning to feel more like a human being again. I was getting quite disgusted with myself. However, I have to rest all the time - the least little thing I do to get tired I seem to put myself. back again. I’m quite sure the injections have helped me and have had every bit of faith in them since you told me they would do me good. ([2784] insists that I enclose the circular that came out of the medicine that they use on me so you could read for yourself what it is.) Dr. Wolohon out the Sanitarium didn’t want to give me these injections he said he didn’t think they would do me a bit of good. He said they used it for Addison’s disease and I do not have that. Well, I know I don’t have that but apparently it helps my system in some other way. He said that if I did feel so positively as I do that it was helping me, he would continue giving them to me as long as I feel I should take them. This other doctor was so impossible that I couldn’t continue with him. I will tell you about him sometime. The last time I was there he put the injection in one side and rubbed the other side. He is so forgetful that [2784] didn’t have any confidence in him. I really thinks he needs a reading but he would throw me out the window if I even mentioned it to him. We told Dr. Wolohon about the readings and I will tell you sometime what he said. I think you would be very much interested. [2784] wanted him to know why I felt so sure that those injections would help me. He said there are some glandular injections that he felt would help me but not the particular one that Dr. McCue has been giving me, but the reading said it would be very well and either that or the rest has helped me, I don’t know which. Maybe it is the combination of both.

I surely would like to get back to work soon but know that I would have to be a whole lot better than I am now. I wouldn’t want to go back and have another relapse. All that I have done would be wasted. It is so hard to tell exactly, however, just when you are ready.

R4. Pamphlet on Eschatin printed by the Parke, Davis & Company to the Medical Profession:

ESCHATIN (SUPRARENAL CORTEX EXTRACT) Eschatin is a highly purified extract of the adrenal cortex, containing not more than a few tenths of 1 per cent of solid extractive matter. It is substantially free from Adrenalin (less than one part in 200,000)

It is standardized after the manner described by Harrop, Pfiffner, Weinstein and Swingle (Proceedings of the Society for Experimental Biology and Medicine, 29:449, Jan., 1932), and contains not less than 25 dog units per cc.

THERAPEUTIC INDICATIONS

Eschatin is indicated in cases of insufficiency of the suprarenal cortex. The only definite indication at present is Addison’s disease, for which it appears to be valuable as a diagnostic as well as therapeutic agent. Possibly the extract will prove in the end to be even more valuable in conditions of hypoadrenia, other than Addison’s disease, in which most of the adrenal tissue has already been destroyed.

The therapeutic action of the adrenal cortex extract has been described by Rowntree, Greene, Swingle and Pfiffner (J. A. M. A., 96:231-235, 1931). Patients in a state of collapse were given intravenously as much as 20 cc. daily, divided into two or three doses, the treatment being followed by remarkable general improvement. Weight gain, increase in strength, and disappearance of anorexia ensued within a few days under treatment, but the effect upon blood pressure was less striking.

The spectacular results observed in several of these early cases are not to be expected in every instance, since the response, no doubt, is dependent upon the degree of suprarenal insufficiency. Moreover, it becomes apparent, now that many cases have been treated, that large daily doses of extract will be required in patients approaching total deficiency. In those having moderate involvement, however, treatment will sustain life and health for a considerable period of time, although naturally the hormone is not a cure and cannot check progressive hypoadrenia due to infection.

Both laboratory and clinical observations have shown that administration of sodium salts is a valuable adjuvant in the management of Addison’s disease. R. F. Loeb (Proc. Soc. Exp. Biol. & Med., 30:308, 1933) reviewed experimental studies of sodium chloride in adrenalectomized animals and reported the result of salt administration in the case of a woman with Addison’s disease. The beneficial effect in this case was striking. George A. Harrop, et al. (J. A. M. A., 100:1850, 1933), in a study of four cases treated with high salt diet, showed that the regular administration of sodium chloride had a markedly beneficial effect. This author also finds the daily administration of from 1 to 3 ounces of cottonseed oil of value. In severe relapse salt may be administered by intravenous injection or by protoclysis. Recent work has shown that an alkalinizing salt mixture containing either sodium bicarbonate or sodium citrate is superior to the use of sodium chloride alone. One suggestion is that sodium chloride and sodium citrate be used in a proportion of two parts of the former to one of the latter (Harrop, et al., J. Exper. Med. 61:839, 1935; W. D. Allers, Proc. Staff Meet. Mayo Clin. 10:406, 1935). When there is no need for emergency measures, adequate amounts of salt mixture may be given by means of a high salt diet together with administration of 5 to 10 Gm. daily in capsules.

DOSAGE

In the preliminary demonstrations of the efficacy of the cortical extract, intravenous treatment was used exclusively, but, although it may be necessary at times to administer Eschatin intravenously, the almost universal practice is to give it subcutaneously. Patients in a state of collapse may be given daily as much as 20 cc. of Eschatin, preferably in divided doses, in addition to hydration and sodium chloride therapy.

If the condition of a patient with Addison’s disease has not reached the stage of extreme exhaustion and collapse, probably much smaller doses of Eschatin will suffice. Clinical data indicate that doses of 1 to 5 cc. subcutaneously are effective. This same dosage and route of administration every two or three days, or even once each week, may be all that is required for maintenance after the phase of severe relapse is past.

PACKAGE

Eschatin is marketed in 10-cc. vials, each cubic centimeter of extract representing at least 25 dog units.

R5. 11/28/39 Tuesday noon [808] letter to EC:

Dear Edgar:

Just a note hurriedly to tell you I’m still on the improve. I have felt all along that the serum injections were helping me and only needed the little bit of encouragement from you to assure me they were. The readings said they were the thing for me and I am sure the readings are right. This Dr. Wolohon is perfectly willing to cooperate with me and give them to me as he said he would do anything that would help me get well, but he doesn’t think they are helping me. He thinks it’s the rest. However, we don’t expect him to know all the information that the readings give. He wouldn’t be an ordinary doctor if he did. We really do like him and he is very nice about me having these treatments. He doesn’t stress the point every time he sees me that they aren’t what I should be having, but seems to be delighted that I am getting well. We didn’t tell Dr. McCue about the readings because he isn’t the type of doctor that you could tell. He is very peculiar and thinks no one else knows what he knows. You know you have met people like that and it is just a waste of breath. I’m so glad I don’t have to go to him anymore and that I can carry out the treatment without him.

I’m still home but do hope I can get back to work soon. Really though this is the first time in years that I have been able to relax and actually enjoy it. I couldn’t do it before and that is the reason I think the injections have helped me. They have relaxed me and quieted me so I could rest. And believe me that is a big factor.

Well, enough about me. How is your family? Have they returned? I am anxious to hear about Gertude’s eyes. Do hope the specialist has done her some good.

Hope Tommie is on the improve. Do remember us to him.

R8. 3/26/40 [808]‘s letter to EC:

WASHINGTON SANITARIUM AND HOSPITAL Takoma Park, Washington, D.C.

Dear Edgar:

Have been intending to write you for three weeks but have been quite sick [with flu] and not equal to it. Came home from the Sanitarium Sunday night and wish you would give me a check reading sometime this week if possible. I will be home in bed. Questions are enclosed in case it is possible for you to give me one.

Later when you get me on my feet again and I can write you in more detail I want to tell you about what the people at the Sanitarium thought about you. By the way they are interested in me having this reading and want to see it after I get it. When I told Dr. Wolohon about you last November he got the impression that you were a Spiritualist and he said the Bible said we are to stay away from that. [GD’s note: The Washington Sanitarium & Hospital is run by Seventh Day Adventists.] However, I have gone into it a little further with them and now they think you might be a prophet. The Supervisor asked me if you had any breath in your body when you gave the readings. Well, anyway, it was quite interesting and will tell you about it sometime.

Surely hope this letter gets you before you go to New York and that you will have time to get me in.
