This Psychic Reading given by Edgar Cayce at the office of the Association, Arctic Crescent, Virginia Beach, Va., this 2nd day of June, 1942, in accordance with request made by the self - Mr. [853], Associate Member of the Ass”n for Research & Enlightenment, Inc.

1. GC: You will have before you the entity, [853], at his desk in Room …, who seeks information, advice and guidance as to his life and work. You will answer the questions he submits, as I ask them:

2. EC: Yes, we have the body, the enquiring mind, [853], this we have had before.

3. Ready for questions.

4. (Q) Considering present conditions and development in my affairs, should I accept the position of Investigator in the Civil Service Commission, which is now under consideration, if it is offered to me? (A) As we find - these conditions have been indicted for the body; while there are many problems and conditions that arise in the experience of the entity, and there is the desire and purpose of the entity to again enter practice of law in his own district and county. This, as we find, should be that to which the body SHOULD desire to do eventually. But as given, through this particular period of emergency, it is better that the entity attempt to serve in those capacities as may BEST serve the whole, - his fellow man, his country, and thus the better service to self.

If this offer crystallizes, and gives sufficient of the worldly goods for the present for the body and dependents, then accept.

If there are other channels that are in the line of duty or service through an emergency, that offer greater remuneration, accept same. For, understand, these are to be practically temporary, or for the duration of the war and portions of the early reconstruction, see? but if there are other opportunities, accept those; PROVIDED it is in the channel where there is a service in the line indicated.

5. (Q) If I accept the position, would it be best to take my wife with me wherever I go, or where would it be best for her to stay? (A) As we find, it would be best for her to select some place, some environ that is most pleasing, that will enable her to be with the body at TIMES, but have a regular place to stay. But the choice should be made by the entity itself - the wife.

6. (Q) Having made application for examination Attorney position in Internal Revenue, is that the examination which was suggested to me in previous Rdg.? (A) That is one of those, yes.

7. (Q) What are the channels or procedures or constituents, mentioned in previous Rdgs. by which I could get the position as attorney in Internal Revenue? (A) Through those regular channels as come through Civil Service appointment used in connection with the influences that direct in such channels. These become partially political, as of course is understood by the body.

8. (Q) What is and where could I take the proper examination? (A) These will come in their regular order.

9. (Q) In view of the changing world conditions, and conditions in my family, could I better serve in another capacity here or in …; if so, please state how and where? (A) As to the places, as to the times, as to the character of service, these - as just indicated - to be sure must be choices of the entity itself. No influence that simply puts an individual being in a place, without the heart, the purpose, the mind of the individual being in same, may enable the individual to serve the better. So, choice is necessary. Hence, that was given from the beginning, and it applies in the spiritual world, the mental world, the material world. Consider that as given, and that is thine own problem, as ye ask, as ye see others serving in the present emergency. Then so do thyself.

10. (Q) To whom should I offer to sell my violin to best advantage and at what price? (A) This must be in that manner as indicated. It may be advertised in such publications that go to those who would be seekers of such, see?

11. (Q) Should I get extra work at night to enable me to make living expenses until I can get a promotion? (A) If that is the desire, if that allows the body to serve the better, yes.

12. (Q) How and with whom? (A) These should be the NATURAL things as come. There are plenty of those that seek for the various things the body can do. Let it be known that you desire such. These may be with wholesale, with retail, or with all the different characters of ordinance and work open in this vicinity.

13. (Q) How can I best straighten out my financial obligations at this time? (A) These should be through those channels that allow the body to care for same in a regular order. Put them all together, and then through those channels in the home make the regulations as to take care of same.

14. (Q) Please give any other advice with regard to securing one of the above positions where I can best serve. (A) Ye can best serve where thy purpose and thy mind and thy desire is! That seek, - in body, in mind, in spirit.

15. We are through for the present.

R1. 6/16/42 Letter from Mrs. [264] to EC: ”…We are so happy over [853]‘s change in his position. He went to work there yesterday and last night he seemed so happy. He is thrilled over being able to contact people in that investigation work, instead of working on papers all the time. And his notice to go to work yesterday said the position would be for the duration and six months thereafter, and then subject to reemployment or be transferred in the Internal Revenue. You see his unit left here yesterday and went to Chicago.

“And do you remember that several years ago you said in a reading that [853] would get in the Internal Revenue through a benevolent influence? And now [853] has made application in several war projects, hoping to be put where he will be more helpful for the duration…”

R2. 6/29/42 Wife reported on her Ck. Physical 264-56, then: “I want to tell you the good that came to [853]. You see, [853]‘s unit was ordered to Chicago, and [853] got the rdgs. and applied for a transfer. Well, on the VERY DAY that the crowd went to Chicago, [853] went to work at his new position for the Civil Service at a small raise in salary, and doing legal work which he likes, and then after he had been there one week they assigned him with fifteen others to the Boston office and [853] was notified Friday that he was to leave here Sunday night (last night) and arrive in Boston to report for duty at nine o’clock this morning. You see, he had not been there long enough to get paid, and he had just enough money to get there, and exist meagerly until he got paid. I was going to sister [678]‘s and stay until he got paid. And Sat. a.m. [853] went into the chief’s office to turn in his identification badge and get his travel order, and the chief said, ‘Well, I see you are planning to leave for Boston tomorrow. Since you haven’t been paid, how are you fixed financially?’ [853] told him and he immediately called the appointment office and had [853]‘s order changed or deferred for THIRTY days until he could be paid, and by being on that job thirty days, the Gov. will pay his expenses to Boston. And the chief told [853] to keep out of the way of other men, as they would be making requests to be deferred too.

“Mr. Cayce, isn’t it all beautiful? God is merciful and does so much more for us than we deserve…

“Since [853] is still with the Civil Service and is being sent to the Boston office (we don’t know for how long), do you think he will be following the rdg.? We believe so, especially since it has worked out as it has, and his job is most necessary for the Gov., and in his assignment he was told that the job was for the duration, and he would be sent to the Internal Revenue after the duration.

“So, we expect to go to Boston four weeks from yesterday.”

R3. 8/20/42 She wrote: “[853] likes his work and has a nice bunch of men to work with, and he has a nice office!”

R4. 12/27/42 She wrote: “Sometimes [853] works fifteen hours a day.”

R5. 1/14/43 Wife [264]‘s letter: “I have a surprise for you, or should it be? That rdg. [853] had, just before coming up here, said he would ‘go many places’ in doing this work. Well, he has rec’d orders to report at the N.Y. office for duty, and we will leave here on Jan. 26th. I will go on to D.C. and stay with Mother and sister [678] until [853] gets his work started and a place for me to stay…

“[853] has certainly had his hands full (with me ill, etc.). He is going to pack some every night, so I won’t have to overtax myself. You said in a rdg. once that from some experience in the past he now had the ‘ability to meet an emergency.’ He has certainly put his shoulder to the wheel since we have been here, and he looks better, seems happier, and has a more positive outlook than he has ever had.”

R6. 2/16/43 Letter from Mrs. [264] to EC: ”…[853] said they have given him such heavy assignments that he has worked all day, and every night for several hours since he has been there…”

R7. 9/8/43 Wife [264]‘s ltr.: “[853] has been transferred to D.C. He wants to follow up what was given him in his last rdg. about returning to N.C. after the war is over, as his work in N.C. was not finished. He also says he never expects to request another rdg. on just how to make a success, but how to serve. He has changed a lot. Our varied experiences have done much for both of us.”

R8. 11/23/43 EC wrote Mrs. [1825] that Mr. [853] might help her in re instrument to find gold.

R9. 3/15/44 Wife [264] wrote: “[853] was transferred back to N.Y., so here we are… Have made so many changes during the past year, feel like I am going around in circles. Have lived in Boston, D.C., N.C., and in N.Y. TWICE. [853]‘s rdg. said he would go to many places while doing this war work, and he truly has…[853] travels a lot. He has been in Albany a week, since we arrived in N.Y.C. on March 1st.”

R10. 3/20/44 Wife [264] wrote: “[853] has been notified that he is to report in the office in …, N.J. on April 1st (just as we had found a small apt., moderately priced, in N.Y.C.!).”

R11. 5/12/44 Wife [264] wrote: “In one of [853]‘s rdgs. he was told that he must have more PATIENCE - that the lack of it hindered him greatly. And Mr. Cayce, I do believe he has paid that debt. Only God knows the patience he has had and still has with me.”

R12. 8/7/44 Wife [264]‘s letter: “Mr. Cayce, they give [853] many cases to complete after one or more investigators have failed on them, and he completes them creditably, and they are satisfied. Then [853] is so proud of doing it that he discusses it with his senior attorneys and they get mad with him. He rubs them the wrong way and they take it off of his efficiency rating as ‘Lack of cooperation’, etc. All they want is production and no talk. The trouble is, he has already annoyed them (I can understand), and he is so anxious to do the right thing. [853] says they are not fair to the people they investigate. The rdg. warned him to be just in his decisions about these men.”

R13. 8/17/44 He wrote: “I could not locate the grave of Wm. J. Hanswell (when I was in Phila.), as only the supts. of the various cemeteries are allowed to give out that information. They are never around and the clerical help wants me to write in for the information.”

R14. 3/23/45 Wife [264] wrote: “At last [853] is being transferred back to D.C., and will be here in a week. We are trying to get an apt. Am so happy over it.”

R15. 5/10/46 Wife wrote: “[853] has been transferred to the Philadelphia office.”

R16. 11/7/46 Wife [264]‘s letter: “[853] is being transferred back to D.C. We will go back into our same apt. For many reasons we are happy to go back, and especially since we have a home there.”

R17. 12/4/58 Wife [264] wrote: “On Sept. 1st we moved to […, N.C.], a little town just 38 miles from [853]‘s old home. [853] had a wonderful opportunity to return to the practice of law here. We are 500 ft. above sea level, have cool nights in summer, and we have a population of about 2000. The people are lovely, and they have given us a welcome with open arms. We are so happy here. And, as you know, [853]‘s greatest desire was to return to the practice of law. He was never happy in the Gov.”

R18. 3/10/60 Letter from [264] to GDT: ”…[853] is just fine. He has a splendid opportunity to go into the office of an established lawyer in Washington, and we are going to move back there as soon as we can find a desirable apartment. [853] said he does not have enough business here to keep him interested, and he does not want to rust out. We wish he had had this opportunity before we left there. However, Gladys, as you know, [853] had dreamed of, talked of, and planned to return to N.C. to practise law, for years. I don’t believe he would ever have been satisfied had we not come…”
