This psychic reading given by Edgar Cayce at his office, 115 West 35th Street, Virginia Beach, Va., this 16th day of March, 1927, in accordance with request made by self - Mr. [900].

Time of Reading 12:10 P. M. Eastern Standard Time. New York City.

1. GC: You will have before you the body and the enquiring mind of [900], of … St., N.Y. City, and the dreams this body had on the dates which I will give you. You will give the interpretation and lesson to be gained from each of these, as I read them to you, and you will answer the questions I will ask you regarding same.

2. EC: Yes, we have the body, the enquiring mind, of [900]. This we have had here before. Ready for dream.

3. (Q) Sunday morning, Feb. 27, 1927. I beheld a great advertisement in electric lights shining out on Broadway. It said: “The substance of matter and of mind is one and the same thing.” Then I added that the difference between matter and animal is that the former is a materialized changed form of this substance, whereas animal is this substance organized to become materially manifested as mind. That the difference between animal and man is that the former organization’s development is confined to the section of the process of the substance that becomes changed into a materialized form, whereas the organization of man mind includes in the materialized form a development gained in all the other sections of the process of this substance. (A) In this the entity sees - as is emblazoned - that of the body mind and the subconscious mind reasoning, as it were, together - giving to the entity, through this conscious force, in this subjugated state, or vision, or dream, that verification of the studies in which the entity finds self engaged, and is as the lesson. This truth, and the understanding of same, should be emblazoned on the minds and hearts of people, even as such lights, such conditions, give to those on this thoroughfare the knowledge, the understanding, of what is to take place from within, see? Then, as applying same, the entity finds that the whole lesson, then, is that as has been given. All matter is as one matter. All time as one time, and the various conditions as are presented in that of the material plane, is as to the rate of its vibratory force as is set in motion, and its portion of that first Creative Energy that impels its own propagation, in time, in space, in the material form and manner, and is of man’s - the highest created Creative Energy in the material plane - the set spaces by man.

4. (Q) We have then this hypothesis provable in one’s consciousness by the introspective method: “The substance of matter and mind is one and the same thing.” Working out this hypothesis we have the above stated conditions of matter - animal and man, and the following conclusions all subject to the same method of proof: “At transition (called death), that inclusion in the mind of man that involved as an organization in the other sections of the creative process of this one substance, separates from the materialized section to become part of other sections of that process - i.e. becomes part of the Universal Forces that compose a whole and harmonious universe.” This is the hypothesis, working out of it a conclusion that must be driven home to the mind of everyone who would find some truth in the whence and whether of life - of its mysteries. The rest all follows. Correct? (A) Correct - and this is as to be remembered with same: That of the material kingdom remains material. That of the spiritual kingdom remains spiritual. MAN develops the soul in that material experience as to ITS plane of existence. Like the animal, the body, that as dust to dust - and as the body of the beast dust to dust in its accumulative forces - goes on and on in ITS - the material effort of ITS proportions and ITS phase of the development, see? while the spirit force goes on in ITS own sphere, see? yet all of one - for we are brothers all.

5. (Q) This a good method to use in my writing? (A) A good method to use in writing.

6. (Q) Night of Feb. 26, 1927, while reading the “Secret Doctrine” by Blavatsky. Saw a pen drawn through that written and then drawn back over it again. Then the voice: “Not necessary for you.” (A) As it were, that as is read here by the entity, that not necessary, even as an EXPERIENCE to the entity - for has not the entity received that same call, and that same promise, “I am with you. I will guide you. I will direct you. Keep thy paths straight.”

7. (Q) At another time while reading this work I heard the voice: “This ought be easy for you.” Yet it isn’t so easy, and yet is. Why is it that the understanding mind is so poor at application - is so seldom successful in the world of application? (A) Fear.

8. (Q) Does this mean that I have sufficient understanding that with all the rest I hope to learn and apply this is unnecessary to burden myself with? (A) Unnecessary to burden self with. Only casting out fear - fear of censure, fear of self, fear of others, and fear of “What will people say?”

9. (Q) Yet the diverse viewpoints of the periods of activity and of rest of this creative force is a point much in dispute. Is this the case? (A) When properly understood, when properly classified, when properly given the viewpoint as has been set before the entity - in this as has been given here, in the separation of the spirit and the material, and each working under the one divine guidance of the all omnipotent - the all creative energy - this easily, better, more comprehensive to the entity.

10. (Q) Are there different rounds at the end of which the monad goes from planet to planet incurring a temporary sleeping or quiet stage and at the end of the 7th round the long period of rest comes, or is the action of this force not periodically absorbed back into the quiet mass state before the forces become active again in the next cycle, but do they endlessly continue at their creative work, every splitting into new forces to add to creation? The latter condition is in long process we know, but are there small and long rest periods? (A) There are small and long rest periods, just as is seen in the heartbeat of the material. Remember, ever there is in the material plane that pattern of that in the spiritual, or in the eons, or in the far distant sphere - for of the sphere is one beat, time is one - that as is present in THINE HAND is the counterbalance of that the farthest distance. As the heart rests from one beat to another, that is as the rest of that as NECESSARY to give that sufficient action to keep - with the rest of the forces - set in order its proper propelling force. Ever the same with that of the spirit entity, the spirit energy as is set in with the individual soul forces as are seen - and as the change from one sphere to another, that rest as is necessary - but with that ever added - for the conditions are active - for God is God of the living, not of the dead!

11. (Q) Saw my mother sick in relation to eliminations. [See 106-11 Reports.] (A) Again we find these same conditions as have been given again and again. Apply that as has been given. Apply that as has been given - for the good, and that as may be accomplished through same. Do that.

12. (Q) How may the pile trouble be remedied? [See 106-11 Reports.] (A) Through the application of those conditions as have been outlined from time to time for such conditions.

13. (Q) Is there need for an operation as regards the female trouble? [See 106-11 Reports.] (A) We do not find it so, were those conditions as has been given for the entity carried out in the proper way and manner, and the eliminations would be set aright. If allowed to become so accumulative and so set, as it were, that they become a vibratory force within themselves - Why does not that as has been learned by the entity find its application in the physical forces of the body? for just as in the lesson as has been given, in how that the forces of the universe as are applicable in one part are applicable in another. Learn to apply the smallest action to the largest deed. The largest then an outcome of the smallest action, that each vibratory force as is set goes about to do ITS work. When one cell becomes misplaced, mis-used, and it goes about to bring about ITS own active force - and it in an abstruse force, in an improper condition - improper conditions grow, by its NATURAL force. Then it would become necessary for operations. Operations NEVER necessary unless such condition has been allowed to reach the point where the cell units, or the vibratory force as is SET, has created an activity within its own self. See?

R2. 3/17/27 EC went to N.Y.C. for a few days. On 3/19/27 he gave a rdg. for Mr. [900] of which we have no copy. See letter below of Mr. [900] on 3/22/27.

R3. 3/22/27 [900]‘s letter to EC:

[…] Bros. Member New York Stock Exchange New York

Dear Edgar:

Received that reading [Rdg. taken 3/19/27 for Mr. [900] while EC was in N.Y. - no copy in A.R.E. files] from Miss [4586] but strange to say the last half is missing. She says she typed all of it on 4 pages, but we only received 3 so that the 4th must have been taken out. She says she sent the boy with it telling him to seal the envelope containing the 4 pages with wax, but we received it not so sealed, so it seems the boy may have taken it out. I am awfully sorry about this and wonder what the result will be. It not only contained market information but the beautiful part that really would bring courage to all of us and indicate that by about May we would have the money to start our institute ex Mr. Riley [Joe Shelby Riley? drugless physician?]. I haven’t got time to write about him, and anyway I want to reserve judgement until later on this matter as I don’t want to throw any cold water on anything that might help us. Miss [4586] told me she would investigate and I hope no one abuses this for their own sake. If she is unable to find anything I certainly want to have a reading on this - not so much to locate the missing part as to put in Miss [4586]‘s hand, who is acquainted with the work, the means of warning either this boy or anyone else who may have taken the paper intending to misuse it. Considering the nature of the work, it certainly was careless of Mrs. [4586]. There was a tone of warning in the latter part of the reading that warned that this information was meant for me and my use only. I wish somehow Dave David E. Kahn] and all would get that - “Seek and ye shall find for yourself” - yet I don’t want to be too hasty - too strong - Dave is doing so much and trying so hard and I want to help, not be a draw back - but this worries me. I’m sure if [4586] only would know the sacredness, the holiness, the high meaning of a reading she would have been more careful, as she would have been with the report from the president of her company. She should have sealed it HERSELF. Yet who knows but what even this, if not intended to happen, may at least do some good? Anyway, I’ll wait a while and then ask you to take a reading on this, asking how this last half of the reading became lost and what we each of us should do about it.

I am sure you feel your trip up here was really beneficial and that we all benefitted. It is so obvious that further remarks about it are superflous. Maybe by May we’ll have the funds to start and can get our group together and found the organization. I’m sure we’ll have my mother [106] with us and she has a practical mind as the readings have given time and again and she’ll keep an eagle eye on things that in a material way may prove invaluable to us. The advice on the Riley matter for example would be worth while. We’ll see however.

Miss [4586] just phoned to say that the boy evidently just lost the last half of the reading, and I told her that if it was only lost no harm would come of it. Maybe even that was intended in a way. I will send you the first half under separate cover [?]. Maybe this matter of the lost 4th sheet will come to us intuitively or in dream and the interpretation will explain it all to us. [See Miss [4586]‘s letter under 4586-4 Reports saying the last sheet was found.] This 4th page said that it was set in the spiritual realm, for me to gain the necessary funds for our work and that WE should not get discouraged or weary. It would come to pass and that I would be guided in how to gain this, and sure enough last night I gained much as you will see by reading the dreams and as this all is to happen in the present 3—4 or 5 weeks, for the financial good of all of us I ask that you do not delay in taking this. I have made this same request so often, but remember we must not grow weary or discouraged. I’d appreciate hearing on this just as soon as possible so as to act upon the guidance. The first part I understand pretty well - i.e. that of the rebuke or criticism, it is the latter part about the stocks that details are necessary, yet I submit all as follows:

Saw my poker game and my automatic action as regards the stock Allied Chemical and 3 aces. Some things I didn’t like. Then I seemed to be going down a bannister, sliding on my back at a fast rate. I was afraid. Then I prayed for an interpretation and the Voice answered: “Simply that I don’t approve. Not that it is either wrong or right to play, but such a condition for a Son!” There seemed the impression, however, that I should not fear, but push courageously on.

Question

1. The whole thing simmers down to a matter of discrimination. The poker table with many vulgarities is not conductive of the concept I am trying to represent to the world - or just as I said when I quit roulette this summer. “There is nothing wrong in playing roulette, but the Master wouldn’t be found playing in that place - then why should I? Am I trying to represent Him, duplicate Him? I am! Enough Said!” Correct?

Voice: “Chrysler Motors may come to 99 1/8.” Questions: What change is this if any? for, as given, I saw Chrysler at 129, meaning a 38 to 42 point advance before May. This would bring it from 38 to about 78. What now is indicated in 99 1/8?

Then I saw Dave Kahn and he seemed to have taken a reading and gained statistics. He said to me: “Louisville and Nashville may go up 29 points in one day.”

Does this mean that L & N will so act? When?

Then a list of stocks were given me as being those which would be active and up in the coming market, as follows:

American Smelters Allied Chemical National Lead International Cement

I seemed impressed with all of them - what is meant?

Then I inquired about Tobacco Products and received the impression that it might go up to 132-4 or 136. I even was given the volume of business this company was doing in cigarettes.

Questions

1. Is T.B. in for this move soon?

Impression that St. Louis and San Francisco R.R. would be a good trading stock.

R6. 3/24/27 EC’s letter to [900]:

Dear [900]:-

I am sending the enclosed [900-307] in reply to yours of the 22nd, and I hope you will find this worth while.

I note what you have to say regarding the reading as was written by Miss [4586]. I don’t see any excuse for a thing of this kind. While in a note I had from her this morning she says the paper was found and delivered to you, to my mind that would have made bad matters worse - had I been in the position she was. That’s the way I would feel about it, anyway. But, as you say, I just hope somebody doesn’t try to apply this in the wrong way and bring on themselves conditions they will not be able to understand. Possibly you will be able to watch this, and by studying the circumstance will be able to gain some lessons as regarding the application of information received through such sources.

Yes, it was certainly very nice to see you all and be with you all again. I only wish that we might have had the opportunity to talk over many of the lessons and truths that have been gotten from time to time. I would like very much, too, to have discussed plans and so forth with you after having talked with the doctor [Dr. [2739]?]. It was quite a surprise to me for him to have assumed the attitude he seemingly did, after his having never said anything to me, and the way you and Dave both had spoken of his conversation when you went over his reading with him. Possibly another case of getting a different angle on things by coming in closer touch with the source, or channel, through which the information comes. Naturally, I am anxious to know just what his conversation will be when he next talks with you about it.

The Riley [Joe Shelby Riley? drugless M.D., D.O., D.C., etc?] part of it will be an outgrowth of the work in operation, but I do not think that it is THE thing to take on so much of that until there is a thorough demonstration of the plausibility, feasibility, and practicability of the undertaking. I am very much of the opinion that, were we to take on any assistant, the first man would be one after Dr. House’s type, who is a practical physician - graduate M.D. - graduate osteopath - and a graduate pharmacist, with many years of practical experience in institutional work. I think it is only too bad that, knowing him (Dr. House) and his abilities, and his present knowledge of the phenomena and its application, he cannot qualify WITHOUT a great deal of work and trouble and expense in the state - but I do not think it would be but a very short time, were the institution started, when we would need such a man - and, of course, with someone else heading the institution, he would be available - but I don’t know as finances would justify in beginning with the two, though possibly it would really be better to stretch it on that end, so that the application of the information received would have better chance of being applied, than with someone who - though willing - has not had the experience in such things. What do you think of it?

I want to see Van Patten [F. A. Van Patten, real estate man] again, and with him try and get in touch with Laskin [GD’s note: Jacob Laskin, who owned much property in Va. Beach, for whom Laskin Road was later named] and Siegel, and see if we can’t get the layout so arranged that we could have the property in hand - and, if so, see what would be the chances of really starting a building program in a very moderate way.

I received a letter to-day from another group of people, for whom we have given work, who are asking very particularly about the Association, what it’s doing, and if it is possible for a man, his wife, a son, and another member of the family, to get rooms in the institution to spend the whole summer. They want to get in close personal touch with the work, so they say. They say they will at least arrange to spend the summer in Virginia Beach, if they can arrange to get a cottage - and they asked me to see about such. Of course another reason why I’ll want to see Van Patten. I don’t see there’s any doubt about it coming, [900], if we can just get started!

Well, I believe [137] was right in saying the reading [one of which we have no copy?] would give him just what he wanted. I just hope that he will apply it, and I believe he’ll find things will work out alright.

In the mail this morning we have at least three people who are desirous of coming to the institution. All say they have gained WONDERFULLY by following out the suggestions, but they naturally, now, want to SEE how the work is done and see the plans of the institution, for they would like to become interested. I don’t know anything of the financial circumstances of any of these. One is from Ohio, another from Colorado, and another one from Alabama, and the man and his wife I spoke of that wanted to come in, are from Florida.

Yes, I am sure it is such minds as your mother’s, [900], that we NEED associated with us in our work, and I believe that, if we conduct the thing right, we will have her support. Don’t let her forget that she promised me she was going to spend part of her time this summer in Virginia Beach. Tell her we are all counting on it.

They had a very peculiar circumstance here at the house while I was away. None of us are able to account for it in any way, shape, form, or fashion. Friday evening, last, just after dinner, Miss Gladys started to her room, and as she got to the head of the steps, in the hall, she met a snake coming down the steps - a real live snake! In the house! And UP STAIRS! Gertrude’s mother, Mrs. Evans, killed it, and it’s said by some of the natives to be a very rare species in this part of the country - a viper - very poisonous. I found everybody about ready to move when I got home. It wasn’t a very large one, but you know any size one scares me and everybody else around here nearly to death. Of course I don’t want it generally known - if we expect to have people here - that such things happen, but it is said by all to be the first time such a thing has been known in this part of the country. I don’t believe I’d tell many of them about it, for I don’t think they’d like it - the idea of coming to such a place. [GD’s note: We later figured that the small snake must have arrived in a crate of oranges from Florida a few days previous and in the warmth of the house and somehow made its way upstairs.]

Well, I’m in hopes everything is going along alright. Glad to say we are all feeling pretty well here. I’ve felt kind of “punk” for the last day or two, but I’m feeling pretty good to-day.

I am in hopes you WILL be able to send us a little something along pretty soon, for I’ve got to get some stationery, pay for some we’re already using, and I’m behind one month with my bills.

No news as yet from the people in Florida, other than that they are still just as confidant that they will be able to work it out, just as soon as everybody can find themselves.
