This Psychic Reading given by Edgar Cayce at his office, 115 West 35th Street, Virginia Beach, Va., this 13th day of January, 1927, in accordance with request made by self - Miss [4586].

1. GC: Please give a complete mental, personal and financial reading on the body of [4586], Care, The … Company, …, New York, by answering the following questions, as I ask them.

2. EC: Ready for questions.

3. (Q) What does the year 1927 hold for this body personally? (A) What the body makes it hold for it! There are many various conditions in which this might be answered or given, but this is as is seen - that the year and the time or space through which the entity passes during this period is as the entity makes same, applying those elements of the mental forces as respecting conditions as present themselves from time to time. Most should be good, for the body, physically and mentally, is very good.

4. (Q) What should the body do to further her personal gain? (A) Rather applying self that better service to others will merit personal gain. Service to others should be the criterion of the entity’s, physically, mentally, spiritually, and in same bring to self the better personal gain. Never should any be as to what I may gain! What may I GIVE!

5. (Q) Is the body properly situated in her present business connections? (A) These are very good. There will be some changes during the year, yet these will be of the nature that will be advantageous, if applied and used in the right way.

6. (Q) How can she improve this situation and be happier? (A) Make the better application of that known and as applied through the entity’s endeavors. How she may apply these? By putting into effect those truths as regarding self, as regarding self’s relations with others, as regarding others’ relations one with another.

7. (Q) What will her future be with The … Co., at …, New York? (A) This would be beyond that as may be given, for there are too many elements that enter into same to give as to WHAT the future will be. What the entity makes it!

8. (Q) Will the business continue to be successful? (A) Continue to be successful, so long as under the present conditions, or present management as has been for the last two years.

9. (Q) Will the present President remain as the employer of the body? (A) If the body so desires.

10. (Q) What are the abilities of the body? (A) Those as have been outlined for the body. These haven’t changed! Only in application do they change. The body is improving mentally and physically. Only in application do the changes come.

11. (Q) Advise what course to pursue for the greatest success. (A) In that as has been outlined. None better!

12. (Q) When should this body marry? (A) When it gets ready to!

13. (Q) Has she met the proper man? (A) If she thinks so, yes! The body may apply self to those abilities, to those conditions as surround same, see? There have been within the entity’s own individual attitude those conditions that have prevented such a consummation before this. When the body, then, so desires to make those conditions as will meet the needs of those, then this should be consummated.

14. (Q) Should the body marry a business or professional man? (A) Marry the one the body loves, REGARDLESS of profession or business!

15. (Q) What should the body do about the conditions that exist or have existed with Thomas W. …, address …, New York? (A) We haven’t Thomas W. We will leave him out of the bill.

16. (Q) In the body’s Life Reading [4586-1] it was forecasted that a decision would be made before October 23, 1926, as to whether the career would be the life or whether the home and minus the career. Has this condition changed? (A) It has not! The entity decided - decided so far for the career. Now, when the body chooses to change as has been given - then decide! There is no condition in the astrological or astronomical, or in those of environmental, or of those as of hereditary, that surpasses the determination of will as regarding home or of career. Then, why temper self, save as SELF desires to accomplish, do, be, act, or weigh in any conditions as respecting same? All of these enter into the life of the individual. The individual makes same by its application to such conditions. See? For, as has been given, to know to do and NOT to do - to that is sin. To not to know and to do, the Forces - or, as has been given, God - have winked at, or passed over - for, as is seen, in application of truth, knowledge, or of any element, is that which brightens or brings or forces about every entity or body the conditions of life.

17. (Q) In the body’s Life Reading [4586-1] it was forecasted that through will’s forces, in the coming two years, she would put herself in that position where, though responsibilities might arise from same, there would come the greater development from service rendered. What sort of responsibilities will arise? (A) Those that the body assumes - for responsibilities are ever of the resuming or assuming of the entity. We find there are two elements: Those that would shift the responsibility to others, or ASSUME self responsibility and never responsible. The entity’s acquired knowledge of self, and self-will, brings about these conditions. Those the entity ASSUMES are the responsibilities, see?

18. (Q) When will these take place? (A) As the entity assumes same.

19. (Q) In what way will the body benefit? (A) By the knowledge, by the application, of those conditions. The more the application of self, the more responsibility - the greater the reward, in EVERY element of life, see? As to that which the entity would attain: Would it assume the responsibility of one possessed of much money, then that much money comes to the entity. Does it assume the responsibility of one that would assume or take on fame, then fame. In and through those channels in which the entity so fits self, through will’s forces, are the heritage of the entity. Would the entity assume that as the responsibility of the most perfect home, then that responsibility is as the entity’s heritage by preparing self for such conditions - for its assuming or taking on that responsibility; for it has been given, and ever will remain: “Whatsoever a man soweth (and man means WOMAN, too) that shall he reap.”

20. (Q) What effect, if any, did the moving of the body’s home have on general conditions? (A) None.

21. (Q) Will there be any changes in the home of the body in 1927? (A) Many.

22. (Q) Will the body be affected thereby? (A) If the body allows self. Will’s forces present themselves again - become again to that force as is seen - environmental, hereditary, will, that of self’s application through experiences in the earth’s plane, and of the entity’s will force as applied to same.

Dear Miss [4586]

I certainly didn’t mean to intimate by silence that I didn’t want to write, but had you been around you would have found that I have been silent to all. I was real sick for about ten days, but I’m glad to say I’m feeling a whole lot better

• and as that’s in the past, we’ll try to forget it!

Edgar Evans is getting along pretty well now, is able to hop around on his crutches, and I think will gradually gain the normal use of his leg.

It certainly was fine to have Hugh Lynn home for Christmas. He was here for two weeks - left on the 6th.

Edgar Evans’ book reached him alright. He certainly enjoyed it, as he did a bundle of them that Dave sent him.

No, we have never gotten Station W M C A. If you know their wave length, possibly we can tune in on it - we’ll try it! It certainly would be nice if we could hear you talking to us over the radio - much nicer though if you didn’t RADIO it! But that would be a whole lot better than no way.

Well, the reading didn’t get off exactly on the right foot - its kind of like myself - but we got it in yesterday, and I’m in hopes that it will prove interesting and worth while. I don’t know whether I would dare comment on the reading or not. Perhaps it would best to leave it for your own personal consideration, and then should you desire to ask questions, give you what my interpretation would be. Some, apparently, are somewhat sarcastic, but I do not believe that they are meant to be in the way of sarcasm at all - rather the incorrect way the question was put. Naturally, this tends to make some appearance of sarcasm. But I’m anxious to know what you think of it, and shall look forward very eagerly to a reply from you very soon.

Well, as I have gotten started off so badly this year, with personal health, feelings, correspondence, and practically everything, I am wondering if the adage will hold true - a bad beginning will make a good ending. I’m in hopes so anyway.

We haven’t looked very much like a summer resort in the last week. About ten or twelve inches of snow on the ground for the last three or four days - still a good deal of it in sight, but the thermometer is gradually climbing up to-day.

R2. 1/17/27 (Monday) Miss [4586]‘s letter to EC:

My dear Mr. Cayce:

The reading reached me Saturday, and, in the meantime, you no doubt received my note, mailed on Friday, saying up to that time it was not received.

Are you prepared for a long letter? Well, here goes!

You see I was so eager to receive the reading - and waited so patiently - that by the time it reached here I was thoroughly composed, and instead of rushing madly to read the results, I very calmly read your letter thoroughly first, and was prepared for the worst - and that it was!

Some of the answers provoked a good chuckle, particularly because there was a lot I could take out of them that seemed right, and in others I just felt that “something was wrong in Denmark”!

Yes Sir, some of those answers were quite terse. I guess the fact that the reading wasn’t given on the day scheduled

• and was turned out on the 13th - and you didn’t feel so well, accounts for it all! NOW IS THAT A GOOD ALIBI?

However, you ask for my opinion of it and all I can say is - I’m the captain of my own ship, and if she runs on the rocks it’s my fault! Right? It all seems to simmer down to one thing - and - I’M IT! I’m going to give you my thoughts on some of the questions and answers and also, if you don’t mind, I’m going to ask you for your interpretation on some of them. You mentioned in your letter that some of the answers would seem sarcastic, but I don’t think so, instead they would seem just PLAIN BLUNT!

Question 1: This is very plain. I’ll do my best to make 1927 the best year - since it is up to me entirely!

Question 2: What should the body do to further her personal gain?

The answer is to apply myself that better service to others will merit personal gain - that “service” is to be my criterion and I should not think of what I may gain but what I may give!

Now right here, Mr. Cayce, I have a complaint to make! Now please don’t take me seriously, because I’m truly laughing when I say this - “I have a complaint to make”! To my way of thinking I have always given lots more than I get, I rarely have anything “thrown” at me, so to speak, and I don’t believe I give with the idea of getting! Of course, as stated above, - that’s my idea of it. What do you think?

Question 3 - “Is the body properly situated in her present business connection” -

Answer 3 - These are very good - that there are changes, and if I apply myself in the right way they will be advantageous changes. That’s clear enuf.

QUESTION 4 - How can she improve this situation and be happier?

ANSWER 4 - Make the better application of that known and as applied through the entity’s endeavors. How she may apply same? By putting into effect those truths as regarding self, as regarding self’s relations with others, as regarding others’ relations one with another.

This I am a bit hazy on and would like your interpretation. I don’t know whether to apply this to business or social affairs. I might apply it socially but not in business, as far as I can see.

Everything is “rosy” until we jump to Question 9 -

“Advise what course to pursue for the greatest success”.

Answer 9 - “In that as has been outlined. None better!”

O, - that’s terse! From what went ahead of that, I presume that I have to apply myself all around, and that it’s entirely up to me. Right?

Question 10 - “When should this body marry”. Answer 10 - “When it gets ready to”.

Another terse one! but I think that’s typical. Would you gather from that, Mr. Cayce, that I alone, am holding conditions back? I get that thought from Question 11 - “Has she met the proper man” - to which the answer is given “If SHE THINKS SO, yes”! - and you continue with the remark that my individual attitude has prevented such a consummation before this, etc. Now here’s the situation. Would you understand that I HAVE met the proper person but that my own attitude is delaying matters? Or, in other words, my mental attitude does not see it right. If my attitude is all wrong, I am very conscientious about changing it, BUT I’M NOT CERTAIN (HERE’S WHERE MY DOUBT COMES IN) that conditions warrant my changing my attitude, see? Now, tell me your slant on it! please!

I’m delighted that you left T. W. out of the bill. Nothing could please me more. The fact that you could not get him means - what? I am interested in just that part of it.

Going to Question 19 - “Will there be any changes in the home of the body in 1927” -

Answer 19 - “Many”.

Then Question 20 - “Will the body be affected thereby” Answer 20 - “If the body allows self”, etc., etc.

That answer baffles me a little. I realize that “will” comes in here but I am just wondering as to whether these “many” changes come to the house through me or through someone else in the household, and I have jurisdiction over being affected or not.

I was rather sorry that you did not get the last three questions -

What should the body be careful of during the year 1927, What are the numbers for this body, How can one apply numbers to the body’s life, Give example.

I don’t mean to be persistent, but was there any reason for it, or was it one of those unexplainable things?

I will be very interested in hearing from you on those points that I am in doubt about.

Now - as for Edgar Evans - I’m so glad he is able to hobble around. Give him my love.

Please take good care of yourself, because you know we can’t afford to have you sick! However, that old adage which you quoted in your letter - “A bad beginning will make a good ending” - I think works out many times, and I just know that you are going to have a wonderful 1927!

I’m going to get some more information about W M C A and let you know about it. On our radio it comes in on 341 METERS, or thereabouts, but I don’t know how you get your stations.

We had a terrible snow storm here since Saturday morning. It was a real blizzard but today it is glorious.

You know in one of your recent letters you told me to write two or three pages to you, - and here I have taken advantage of it! Just think three pages and I could almost keep writing volumes but I’m going to have a little sympathy. Please remember me to everyone, and in closing let me assure you that even though the reading was “bumpy” in spots, I appreciate it and hope to gain something from it - particularly after I have your version of some of the answers in doubt.

R3. 1/20/27 EC’s letter to Miss [4586]:

Miss [4586] New York City

Dear Miss [4586]

Yours of the 13th and 17th TO HAND! And now, what must I say? Yes, I’m always prepared for a long letter, and the longer they are the better, if I know what to say in reply.

And so you think the worst was there! If you could see a whole lot of the information that has been gotten at various times, on various subjects, I believe you would better understand what is given in your reading.

Now, I don’t mean I’m going to sit down and tell you all of it, because I can’t! In fact, I don’t know as my physical consciousness is able to cope with it all at once. I do not think, however, that it was any fault of the change in time, nor anything caused by my physical condition. Rather the questions as they were worded. No, I don’t mean to use a pitch fork and lay the blame at your door - I would pitch it on further and lay the blame at Dave’s door. You know, Miss [4586] it takes many various kinds of individuals to make a world, and there are just as many various minds as there are different individuals. There are some people that have such a consciousness as desire to know a thing that it is necessary for that individual to have it told them in a thousand words when five would be all that would be necessary. Dave is such a one. Now the clashing of your mind and his, in the questions asked, is the variation that has caused some questioning in your own mind as to the answers as were given. As I understand the condition, this is the alibi - or rather fact. Please don’t understand that I’m trying to belittle Dave. I’m perfectly aware of the fact that he has a wonderful mind - has forgotten more, perhaps, than I will ever remember - but his idea as concerning questions to be asked at such occasions is not wholly correct.

You are correct - ENTIRELY correct - when you say the gist of the whole thing is that you are the captain of your own ship, and if she runs on the rocks its your own fault! But I’ll try and give you my interpretation of the questions as they come.

In the first, not only is it entirely up to you, but mentally and physically you are capable of handling the situation.

Second, I think the question is asked wrong, and the answer

• and the way you feel about it in your complaint - is rather in keeping with the question; for, in all seriousness, there is quite a difference in “What should the body do to further her personal gains?” and “Making a personal application of the body’s abilities, how may she make more personal gain?” Now, I don’t mean by this that I think I would know how to ask the questions, or that I should every change a person’s questions that they ask, for after all this is the sum and substance of any information that may be obtained in the readings: “As I apply my personal condition and knowledge, and the rebound I gain from the contact of the forces as manifested through the readings, the sum total of my personal application of that information is my gain from such contact.” So, I believe, if you will study number two a little bit deeper, gaining more of the spiritual insight into it, there won’t be quite so much complaint.

Number three: All good!

Number four: Put the accent on the KNOWN and you have the whole thing, for in application are we the gainers. It’s something like this: If you have to TRY to be happy, or make yourself be happy, you are already discontent! You either ARE, by applying that you know, or ARE NOT by mis-application of that you know! I hope this clarifies it, for it’s the best one in the whole thing.

Number five is again self-application.

Number nine means reference to number four, ENTIRELY so!

Number ten would imply that the opportunities have presented themselves, are in the manner and way of being presented again, if you would allow them to be. APPLYING what you already know is what it means by “When it gets ready!” As is also seen in number eleven. Certainly it is your own attitude that has delayed matters! Don’t be too fast about changing your mental attitude, BUT be sure you have the proper aim before you shoot! And I, personally, am of this belief: Now I don’t mean for you to accept this - I’m just talking personally - I believe that is what you asked for: There is one correct mate for each individual. When they meet there is no doubt in either’s heart or mind. Now, this idea run to seed might not be very good. Possibly Judge Lindsey has a better idea than I - but this is one thing SURE - if - IF - I F - we were made male and female, and the female made from the rib of the man, then there is only one that can replace that position - that made from that same element. Now - perhaps you’d better take that off and bury it a while, and then dig it up and look at it again - but it’s something to think over! But I don’t believe you’ll have any doubt when the right fellow shows his face.

Now you skip over a whole lot of them here - but I’m sure you must have gotten that there are some real truths in the answers, and oh, what a difference when the questions refer to information given, and otherwise!

Now, in nineteen - this, as I understand, covers a whole MULTITUDE of sins. Another case of where we just didn’t get the question right - or, if we would take literally - if this question had been answered in toto, there wouldn’t have been room for any other at all!

In twenty, I’m sure you realize that yourself is the greatest factor, as to the effect any change might have, and in the application of whatever knowledge you may have concerning how to meet conditions as they arise, whether they are actions of other individuals or those of your own volition. So it becomes really the application of will or of self again.

Now, just why it didn’t answer the last three - that’s one of those unexplainable things, for we have often had information where it has warned individuals regarding certain conditions that might arise during several years, even. As for numbers, according to the reading, this is almost a science in itself, and there has often been given personal application to individuals. I know it was for Dave, and I’m sure it has been for several others. I suppose - whatever it was - it had just run down at that time - that’s the only way I can explain it.

Now, I hope the explanation hasn’t been worse than the reading - but, as I read over the reading, in trying to answer these, I really believe that the whole thing is in number four, and if you’ll study that all to-gether, applying what you already know, the rest of it comes! And I think you had too big a dose at once - so we’ll spread it all out and make another one or two from time to time.

Now for other things. Yes, Edgar Evans seems to be getting along pretty nice. His leg gives out on him once in a while, but I feel sure, as his strength comes back, and as he uses it more and more, why it’ll come around alright. His actions often times remind me a great deal of my own experience just after my operation.

As for myself, I’m feeling better than I have in a long, long, time. Being a Uranian, I swing greatly with the pendulum. I am either very, very, high, or very, very, low. Some of these days I’ll let you read a reading on MYSELF. The first time we ever knew it would tell ANYTHING regarding the influence of other bodies or other experiences on a physical body, and of the inside self that we seldom let folks see.

Gertrude (Mrs. Cayce) hasn’t been feeling good either, but she’s feeling better. Miss Gladys has been trying to get sick - but I think she’s feeling a LITTLE better - complains awfully though at times.

I hope you do find out about the radio. I think it would be lots of fun to hear somebody holler at us and not say anything back.

Well, we had our snowstorm too - but to-day it has made us feel very much like going swimming. It has been up as high as seventy, I think, here to-day, and now at about five-thirty it is sixty-four but there’s no telling what it may be in the morning - it may be freezing!

Well, we are all planning that maybe we’ll take a little trip - go down to Florida for two or three weeks. Perhaps we’ll go about the first. So we’ll have time to hear from you again.

Now, if I haven’t gotten this all straightened out, let’s straighten it out! And I’m sure you have made up your mind to one thing already - the next time you ask questions, you’ll ask ‘em! You know, after all, all of this is either very personal - I mean the work itself - and is a very personal application, or it isn’t anything. The truths are applicable to most anyone. Specific questions are applicable to specific conditions for an individual, and often times in covering too great a scope makes “bumpy places.”

Well, we all send our kindest personal regards, and hope that you will study this all over real well and let us get it all smoothed out for you - for you know you’ve got a big job before you, and there’s a whole lot that you can do - and there are a whole lot of people that need your counsel and advice.

R4. 1/25/27 [4586]‘s letter to EC:

Dear Mr. Cayce:

I am very appreciative for your lengthy - explanatory letter and while it clears matters in some spots I am just as puzzled as ever in others.

This is funny but I know you will be interested in what I am going to tell you. You know we asked about my business and the answers were that it would continue to be successful under present management, that I would remain with my present employer if I so desired, but that there were many changes that were advantageous if applied in the right way. Now! last Saturday, almost simultaneously with receiving your letter, my chief told me that they expected to move the New York office up the Massachusetts, and asked if I wanted to go up there. That is a great problem for me because I have my family here, and all my interests, and I just couldn’t consider going to a little town of 6000 people to live - and all strangers. Now I’m more perplexed than ever. Of course it is not definitely decided, but there is a strong possibility of it. What do you think I had better do, considering the reading and so forth. I know you will come back and say “it’s up to me” - but give me your advice any way.

Now as to how the questions were put, - we won’t blame Dave too much because he did mean well! so let’s you and I excuse him. I told him last nite that he didn’t put some of the questions just right but I didn’t say too much about it.

Now, Mr. Cayce, I do have to admit that I DO NOT comprehend Question and Answer No. 4, and I am going to give you my thoughts in every detail so you can understand my reason for being puzzled.

Question No. 3 was - “Is the body properly situated in her present business connections” - and your answer was - “These are very good”, etc. Then Question No. 4 was “How can she improve this situation and be happier” - and the answer was “Make the better application of that KNOWN and as applied through the entity’s endeavors. How she may apply these? By putting into effect those truths as regarding self, as regarding self’s relations with others, as regarding others’ relations one with another”.

Does this apply to my business strictly, since it follows Question 3, and if so, how does it apply to business, or, should I put it this way - how can I apply it to business, particularly in consideration of the present status of my office. Or, can we take it still further - be happier OUT OF THE BUSINESS.

I flatter myself, Mr. Cayce, because when I read some of your thoughts they agree with mine - those in the back of my head

• and I repeat - I’m flattered! I refer to your remark - I will not have any doubt when the right fellow shows his face, etc., but - let us go over Question No. 10 - “When I get ready to” which you say means that opportunities have presented themselves and are in the way of being presented again - IF I allow myself. Would you understand from that that the SAME opportunity comes up again or OTHER opportunities. I raise this question because you say in your answer that I have met the right man “If I think so”, and that my mental attitude has prevented such a consummation. The more I read this thing the more I get out of it - and the more I get out of it the more involved it seems because there can be so many interpretations taken.

O, as I read that paragraph I wonder whether you will ever understand what on earth I am driving at! My best wishes towards your solution of it!!

Further, you said that I skipped over a lot and hoped that I got what was in them. I thought some of those paragraphs were just beautiful and YOU KNOW I got their meaning - otherwise you would have heard from me!

I’d love to have a resume from you, considering the readings, as to HOW you think I can give counsel and advice to others. You know, Mr. Cayce, I CAN hand out counsel and advice, but when it comes to MY VERY own, O! I like to hear from someone else!

A young lady friend of mine, who happens to be located right down here, is having considerable trouble with her stomach and she contemplates an operation - I believe her appendix are affected. I don’t want her to undergo an operation until she hears from you and she has promised me that. When - how soon - can you give her a physical reading. She is suffering periodically dreadfully and I just feel you will be able to help her. Won’t you give me a date for her appointment?

Please, all of you, keep well. I don’t like to hear of Mrs. Cayce or Miss Gladys or yourself not being 100 per cent right in health, because you all mean so much to each other. Your household is a real working group!

Thank you so much for that closing paragraph in your letter - that a whole lot of people need my counsel and advice! Where did you get that from?

I think a little trip to Florida would do all of you much good and I do hope that your plans will be carried out. If you do go I sincerely hope that you have a wonderful trip and come back fully equipped to have that BIG 1927!

I had a letter from Hugh Lynn the other day and he says he feel confident about passing his exams O.K. I know he will, too.

My dear Miss [4586]

Your very interesting letter of the 25th is before me. It certainly is very funny how circumstances - if it be circumstances - so often coincide with the conditions as present themselves from time to time. In fact, this so often happens, I believe we are justified in saying it is neither coincident nor guess work.

Now, as to what to tell you to do, it will just have to come back to that same thing - it is up to you! and again referring to number four, knowing your own abilities, knowing your own circumstances, knowing circumstances surrounding those depending upon you, or whom you depend upon, you will just have to weigh all of these things in the balance and put them along side of what you desire to do, what you desire to make of your life, the plans that you have set out for your life - then check them off and see where the balance lies!

No, I did not mean to blame anyone, except in the application of that which each of you should have known, through the information that had been laid before each of you from time to time.

I suppose I’m just muddling it up more and more. Perhaps I know what I want to say and haven’t the correct vocabulary to put the ideas into words in such a way that you grasp the full meaning. That in part is what I meant when I said some people require a great many words to explain a thing - others a few words tell them a whole lot. It is something like the book I sent you to read [3744 series]. I had a letter from a friend of mind a few days ago who has been studying the phenomena very seriously, and very earnestly, delving into data compiled by perhaps hundreds, even, of learned men - and a day or two ago he came down to this conclusion: “Cayce, all that has ever been said is included in those few pages you wrote some years ago, and even a great deal more than most of them have ever gotten.”

Now the answer in number four, I think, Miss [4586] applies to business as well as to every other association in or out of business - for KNOWN means the ability to apply knowledge concerning WHATEVER may be at hand. Now do you get it? I don’t think that you need feel that you are flattered. I think I had better feel that I am flattered - for the readings have already said that you HAVE the abilities to apply knowledge and to apply yourself, whether in business or in your social relations, or business relations. Now the READINGS have the ability to put it in a few words, while my own conscious sensuous mind requires hundreds of words, and then I ball it all up. Certainly, the same opportunities present themselves from time to time. Whoever said “Opportunity only knocks once” needed to modify that a great deal. The very fact that there are a great many interpretations makes it the more profound, for I certainly can’t give you anything out of my conscious mind that is profound, or is capable of being interpreted in more than one way.

Now, let’s start back at the beginning of “if I think so.” Now let’s lay down the first laws as have been given in the readings as respecting what thinking is. First we find this: “Mind IS the Builder.” Then we find this: “Thoughts are Deeds. They may become crimes or miracles.” Now, if we build in our mental attitude towards ANY condition, we either let down a gap to receive something, or we build a barrier against something. Now, when opportunity presents itself, have we entertained it and are ready for its reception? or have we builded a wall such that in after years we say “It did not present itself again?” or had we so builded that the opportunity had the appearance of something else? Now, how’s that?

Yes, most of us are better at giving counsel than at heeding. It reminds me of my dear old grandad, who was a very wonderful man to me. He used to say, “Do as I TELL you - not as I DO!” But, the readings have said, “Many need your counsel and advice,” and I believe it!

I haven’t heard from your young lady friend. Of course you know I’d be mighty glad to be of help if possible. Possibly you had better have her wire me at Halcyon Hotel, Miami, Florida. We’ll get it just as soon as possible. There must be some INDIVIDUAL ACTION, though.

If present program works out, we will leave for Florida the morning of the 1st.

Hugh Lynn has been having some time, I think, with his exams. I hope he gets through alright.

NEW YORK, N.Y.

Dear Mr. Cayce,

O, I’m so delighted that you have arranged to go to Florida, and that plans were pretty much decided upon when you wrote me the other day. I am sure it will do all of you the world of good!

Your letter was just wonderful, Mr. Cayce, and if words were necessary for me to understand - your letter did the trick! Probably I do need a lot of “words” in order to see things, but sometimes one needs them to put them in the “know”.

About this little lady friend of mine, this is not the lady I wrote you about previously, but is Miss [4390]. I believe she is writing you today. I had to chuckle a bit when I read your remark “there must be some INDIVIDUAL ACTION, though.” I DIDN’T NEED MANY WORDS THERE!!! Miss [4390] immediately asked me to help her with the letter to you and I said, - “Do you want to put me in bad repute with Mr. Cayce”? I just wouldn’t have anything to do with her letter, only hand her your address. Now, am I not an obedient pupil? Miss [4390] is indeed a very sweet personality and I think a great deal of her.

Things are developing rather slowly around the office here but I have rather made up my mind, almost since the beginning of the changes taking place, that I could not see my way clear to living up in Massachusetts. That would seem as though I was just prejudiced from the beginning, and that I did not give it much thought, but truly, Mr. Cayce, I don’t feel that I would be altogether content to live away from my family and circle of friends that I have here. Such changes would make no difference to one who did not have family life, etc. and then it would an experience to be snatched up, but do think there is big enuf field for all of us here right in New York to accomplish what we are after, and not have to give up everything that means so much to one, particularly when the subject involved is a “girl”. Do you agree with me?

I feel rather wandering this morning. Hearing about your vacationing in Florida, Mrs. Kahn having gone to Tulsa and some other friends of mine going to Bermuda. Today New York hold no charms for me - I want to travel too.

My family are all fine. Last Friday evening my sister announced her engagement to a perfectly wonderful chap and of course we are all very delighted over it. I do hope that you will make a trip to New York sometime, because I would love to have Mother meet you and Mrs. Cayce, and the rest of the family.

There isn’t much else to say in this note.

Dear Miss [4586]

Because we have seemingly neglected you, don’t think that we have forgotten you.

We all had quite a nice trip to Florida. It was an entirely new experience to all of us, and as well as meeting many of our old friends and acquaintances we made many new ones, who went to a great deal of trouble to make our stay just as pleasant as possible - while our time was taken up every minute with our work, still - in between - and many evenings were spent very pleasantly with friends, and going about seeing the various points of interest. While I like Florida very much, especially at that season of the year, still I don’t think I’d like to live there the year round. I hope we accomplished a great deal. I’m sure it did all of us good, and I am in hopes that we left impressions with our new friends that will always keep them our friends, and I assure you it was very pleasant to renew acquaintances and meet our old friends.

Yes, I have written Miss [4390] and made the appointment, as you already no doubt know. We find ourselves rather “snowed-under” if I may use such an expression with conditions of this nature, with requests for appointments, and they run well up, already, into the latter part of April, and we are having to defer making further appointments until we catch up.

So your sister is going to get married! Well, I suppose we’ll be hearing your announcement real soon - before the year is over, anyway.

You feel like you want to travel too - well, I guess you will at least make Virginia Beach this summer. Be sure and make it after June, for we expect to take a REAL vacation during that month. We hope to be away from here. If not, that would be a very nice time for you to be here - but we’ll know more about that later.

Well, it looks like I’m going to make a trip to New York. No doubt, though, you have heard all about it. Certainly hope I shall have the opportunity to see you, and meet your mother, and a great many of your friends.

Dear Mr. Cayce,

It’s 6 o’clock, and I’m still at the office, but I’ve promised myself that I would write you a letter TODAY, and I’m going to do that before I leave here.

No doubt you have received my wire. I blame Dave for my missing out on saying good-bye to you, because he could have ‘phone me during the day that you were leaving last night.

I didn’t reach home until about 11 o’clock and Mother was very much upset because I did not get home in time to be able to telephone you before your train time, - in fact, confidentially - she scolded quite hard - so you see the standing you have in my home!

However, no one was more regretful than I. I phoned Dave’s house around 11 and Hazel told me that you had left. I called him again a little later, when he returned, and he said you excused me - for which I thank you! However, I still feel guilty!

About Sunday, Mr. Cayce, I did so want to be with you all, but I attended a dinner given to some friends of mine who are returning to Peru this week and it was really very difficult to upset the plans that were made. In fact up to the last minute I tried to “gracefully” make my exit, but they would not hear of it. Truly, I didn’t enjoy myself half as much as I should for the reason that I FELT I BELONGED UPTOWN SOMEWHERE - “listening in”.

You don’t know how delighted I was to have you call me on your arrival here, to be able to see you for a whole evening - chatting - and to hear one of the readings again* - and I hope it won’t be long before we visit together again.

I sent Mr. [900] his matter, but somehow my messenger was curious and delved into the pages and left one around his desk*, which we found here this morning. However, everything

My dear Miss [4586]:-

I was sorry that I didn’t get to see you again before I left. It was real nice to see you again. I was glad that you had the opportunity to hear another one of the readings [No copy on file] and to meet [900]. I would like for you to hear a good deal more of his ideas concerning the work and the developing of same. I was sorry that you had that mix-up. I guess you didn’t realize just how much curiosity some people have. I know it must have worried you a bit. I know it did [900], from what he had to say about it, but his first idea was that he hoped that whoever saw it didn’t try to apply it in the wrong way, and thus get an improper conception of the work and its application. But I’m glad it got straightened out alright.

Yes, Dave’s a great fellow, and we had a very busy but a very pleasant two or three days to-gether. I wish I could have seen you after the meeting Saturday night, and especially after the meeting Monday afternoon. I would like for you to have heard the discussion we had that afternoon, but I trust that you will become acquainted with some of the people who seem so very much interested in the developing of the institute work, and as most of them seem to have arranged, or be arranging, to come to the Beach this summer, you no doubt will meet many of them while you are here.

I certainly would like to meet those friends of yours from Peru. I have a decided weakness for Peru. I hope sometime you will get [900] to let you read the scenario [4908 series] that was written while I was asleep. The scenes are laid in Peru, and it is about its ancient people, its ancient religion, and the reflection of same in the lives of some New Yorkers seeking adventure. I’m sure that makes it interesting to you.

Yes, we surely have been very busy every since I’ve been back, and I had a phone call from Dave from Chicago. He seems to have been up against it for a day or two. I hope he got straightened out alright and is back in New York though by now.

Well, things are beginning to take on a little bit different air around the Beach. Our big hotel opens Monday. So we know there will be a gay week around the Beach, and I am already receiving letters from people who intend to visit the place through the spring and summer. Many of them are making appointments to have a little chat with me while they are here - or maybe its ME they’re coming to see and they’ll look around the place while they’re here! The conceitedness of some people is awful, isn’t it?

NEW YORK, N.Y.

Dear Mr. Cayce,

Your letter of the 31st gave me the usual amount of pleasure. I’m glad my wire reached you all right and I’m sure it must have conveyed to you, in a small way, my great disappointment at not seeing you before you left. However, that’s that.

Yes, Mr. Cayce, my friends who have just returned to Peru are delightful folks. You see they are a married couple - rather newlyweds, about two years. I knew the “boy” before he married (he’s a New Yorker) and happened to be a classmate of a friend of mine at Ann Arbor University. He went down to Peru on business and his social activities brought him into contact with the men “higher up”. The story is - he married the daughter of a Peruvian diplomat! She is charming. She cannot carry on a very extended conversation in English, but, at that, she does very well, and the difficulty she has in expressing herself at times is most becoming! I thoroughly enjoyed them. They arrived in America about two months ago. They spent three weeks here in New York and then went to Detroit visiting. They returned to New York again while you were here and then - home.

The Saturday I saw you at Mr. Blumenthal’s home - that evening a little party of us, including the Peruvians, drove up to Post Lodge in Pelham, New York, and here’s where the world is tiny! We were introduced to another party of people up at the Lodge and in the group was a gentlemen from South America who was known to this little lady’s family. This man is very well informed on palmistry, astrology, etc. etc., and of the whole party he “picked” on me and told me many things. Don’t let me forget to tell you - when I see you (?)

• all about this. I think you will be very much interested - particularly because he told me much that you have said - almost verbatim! Now! You can well imagine that I was “to home”.

I chuckled a bit when I read your remark about your conceitedness about folks going down to the beach to see you rather than the beach! No conceitedness about that - Mr. Cayce - because speaking for myself - when I come to the beach - IT WON’T BE FOR THE BEACH! Of course, I’ll enjoy it as a side issue - but that’s all.

I’m glad to hear that Mrs. Cayce and all the folks are well.

I wanted to ask you, while you were here, do you think I have improved since the summertime. I don’t seem to take on much weight but I do think I look more rested than I did in the summer. I ask you because I feel you are in better position to tell me not having seen me for so many months. Don’t be afraid to tell me if you DON’T THINK SO.

Business conditions are more or less status quo. My chief moves up to the factory next week, according to his latest ideas, and he does not say anything that might discourage me in any way, in fact hearsay has it that I am “on the Rock of Gibraltar”. Remember you said to me when you were here that I WAS STILL THINKING ABOUT CHANGING. You know that idea is still in the back of my head, and I won’t get it out until I see something really concrete. However, my mental condition is changing a little - I have rather had a change of front - in other words, I’m getting tired of this business confusion! What do you think of that?

Dear Miss [4586]:-

As always, we were mighty glad to have yours of the 5th. You know, from what you say about your friends from Peru, I know you would be interested in reading that story for a scenario, and I certainly do hope that you will make the opportunity to ask Mr. Blumenthal about this. I know he will be glad for you to read it, and to hear your comment on it. I am sure, from what you say about your friends, you will know enough about the social and the political life of the country to know how well the description would fit into the situation as is given. I know it would have been interesting to have met these people, and I hope yet that we will have the opportunity to meet them.

What you say about the palmist is certainly very interesting, and I shall certainly try and not let you forget to tell me all about this when we see each other again.

Did you read an article in the Atlantic Monthly - I believe it was last August - it was written by some college professor, I believe, from Boston, entitled “Can They All Be Wrong?” I may have said something to you about this before, but in this instance the man had gone to many people in various parts of the world, and people who claimed to obtain their information from various sources, but the substance of the matter was that practically everyone had told him the same thing - or maybe it is something like a letter I received from a trained nurse [4329], from a town in Ohio, to-day. The reading was for her sister. She said, “The more I see of the readings, the more I have to wonder how do you do it,” and I suppose this is about the way you feel. How does a man of foreign birth, who has made a study of palmistry and astrology, happen to tell you the same things as a fellow who has gained his information from the subconscious, who hasn’t made a study of any of these? Well, we don’t know - that’s all! but it’s worth studying, don’t you think?

Well, I do hope that some of the people who come to the Beach will be really looking for me - though I assure you things have certainly been humming around here lately. There has been something going on at the new Cavalier - and even the natives of Virginia Beach are aware of it! Some SEVEN THOUSAND people passed through the portals of the place in one day - and it wasn’t a good day either - it was raining! Not much for some places, BUT - this is Virginia Beach!

Yes, I wanted to talk to you just a bit about the improvement that I seemed to see, but - as you know - I didn’t have the opportunity to become quite so personal. But I really do think there is whole lot of improvement. Now, I hope you’ll take this just right - but it seems to me - possibly it was on account of different surroundings - but I don’t think so. Not that I think I’m such a wonderful judge of human nature, or such a character reader from the physiognomy of anyone - but it seems to me you not only appeared to be enjoying better physical health, but better health from deeper within - more sure. Not more satisfied, but more content. Possibly a little bit more determination, and most of all - the lack of fear! I think that was the most pronounced thing of all, and it is the one thing that so many people are burdened with, until it becomes self pity.

I was certainly sorry I didn’t have the opportunity to meet your mother while I was there. I certainly hope that the next time I come up I will have the opportunity to see her. I guess things will be so changed with Dave [Marriage to Lucille Kahn?] by that time that maybe he won’t want to be bothered by me so much.

Well, I’m mighty glad to say we are all feeling mighty well here. We are kind of hoping against hope that Hugh Lynn will get home for the Easter holidays. He’s not due to, but I think that he can’t hold out any longer! But I hope we will get to see him, if it can be arranged so he can get here.

Well, let us hear from you whenever you have the opportunity. You know we are always glad to hear from [4586].

Dear Mr. Cayce,

I know you are going to be terribly surprised to hear from me at this particular time, but things are turning over so fast here that I am TURNING to you for the assistance which I know you can given me.

They are disbanding down here very rapidly. Tentative plans are only good for a day. I am trying to the best of my ability to keep both feet on the floor, and so far I feel certain I have succeeded, but now I am beginning to wonder!

You see my present chief has vaguely promised to make me his representative here in New York Office. At the same time an outside interest has made me an offer and poor little [4586] don’t know whether to hang on or jump - in the face of all this turmoil. So - I wonder - as a special, special favor, if you would cram in a little task for me. I should be very grateful to you for your help. You see if I am to make a change I will have to decide very soon.

I am attaching hereto a list of questions [See used in 4586-5] which I put up myself. They are my very OWN - no outside help has been enlisted - and they are given just as I feel about the whole thing. They may be crude in their construction but I know you will get the gist of them. They are the various angles as I see them.

I am crossing my thumbs and hoping that you will be able to squeeze this in for me VERY VERY soon and am awaiting your answer with much interest. Won’t you please do your best?

Dear Mr. Cayce,

Your letter reached me yesterday morning - Monday. I don’t know of a better way to start the week than by receiving a letter from Mr. Cayce! I am SO glad to receive your letters!

About those “sweet ole Peruvians”, maybe you will be able to meet them some day. Everything is possible - so why not that? And if you should meet them, I just know that you will think as much of them as I do. I wanted Dave to spend a little time with them - because they are “different” - but it is so hard to arrange anything in advance with Dave, so I simply had to forego that. I know he would have enjoyed them immensely!

About the story for the scenario, the first chance I get to see Mr. Blumenthal I will ask him if I may read it. By the way, did he send you your copy of the reading which you gave down at his home [No copy]? I hope it was all right - particularly in view of it being the first time I ever took anything of its kind. You must get the “hang” of it - so to speak - otherwise you are lost with just “so many words”. However, it came to me rather easy, so now I credit myself with knowing your language! Righto?

About this South American palmist, you are perfectly right in all that you say in this paragraph of your letter. “Can They All Be Wrong”? (I hope they’re not!) This gentlemen seemed to be quite interested in me, in that he thought I had a remarkable outlook in every phase of life. He said that in my business I had the cardinal powers of a male - and in home life I had all the qualities that would make for ideal living! How could anyone ask for more?? Such heights almost frighten me! Seems like it is too good to be substantial! I told Mother about this and, jokingly she said, “maybe you have too much in you for one person!” I thought that might be sarcasm but, from my dear Mother, that was very apropos!

Maybe I’ll be one of the FIFTEEN THOUSAND walking thru the portals of the Cavalier before the summer! It certainly looked very promising when it was in construction, and no doubt it is quite a good-looking hotel. Do you suppose it will be within my reach to stop at it when I come down? Are the rates very high?

Now I must tell you something that has been on my mind since I saw you in New York, and it invited my asking you whether you thought I had improved or not. I rather sensed, when I saw you at Dave’s house, that I looked different to you. I thought maybe it was the difference in dress - from summer clothes to winter attire - but I felt that - I looked different to you than when you saw me in Virginia in the summertime. I didn’t exactly know whether it was a change in appearance or whether your first impression of me was different. However, so long as you think I improved in the way you describe - that’s all that is necessary. I do feel, myself, that I am very much more “sure” of myself and I am working toward certain things. In other words, I feel capable of attaining the things that I want. That’s all right, isn’t it?

I sent you yesterday a little book entitled “Good Morning”. It was written by my chief, Mr. […]. It has always been his custom to send a Good Morning Letter to each of his Adjutants, which would be read to the staff every morning. He selected some of the best letters and put them into book form. I think there are some very good thoughts in these and I thought that Mrs. Cayce and you would enjoy them. Please accept this copy with my compliments and I am sure Mr. […] if he knew you both, would be glad to have a copy in your hands.

I loved the closing paragraph of your letter - “take care, and don’t let that change of mind make too big a change. Possibly, though, a ruler in one’s own house is better than a ruler over a large body or group of people”. That thought is almost like an excerpt from a reading. However, I shall be careful - very careful! But, dear Mr. Cayce, the “ruler” part I don’t like. I should loathe being a “ruler” but I like being a “pal” and “companion”! That’s that!

I had a very lovely note from Hugh Lynn and I am writing him today. I bet you’ll see him for Easter because he just can’t wait until he gets home.

Whee, this is a long letter - and I am looking for your letter in reply to mine of the other day. That was sent off post-haste - but I’m sitting “tight” until I hear from you.
