This psychic reading given by Edgar Cayce at his office, 115 West 35th Street, Virginia Beach, Va., this 7th day of September, 1929, in accordance with request made by self - Mr. [900].
[Edgar Cayce; Mr. [900], Conductor; Gladys Davis, Steno. Mrs. Edgar Cayce, Miss Mildred Davis, and Mr. L. B. Cayce.]
Time of Reading 5:30 P. M. Eastern Standard Time. New York City.
-
[900]: You will have before you [900], present in this room, and the various relationships of this body, entailing the various responsibilities that are upon him and associates, in various fields of endeavors at this time. In the beginning of this reading you will first give the body, [900], a physical reading, telling him how he may better his physical condition as it exists at the present time, and what to do. Thereafter you will answer the questions regarding these relationships that I will ask you.
-
EC: We have the body [900], and those relationships of the body in the varied associations. Many of these we have had before. Also the physical conditions as exist at the present time for the body. Now we find, in this relation, the physical conditions - there are conditions that are accentuated in the physical through the mental and physical strain under which the body physical labors. These should be rather as the warnings as have [been] and are being given to the body from time to time, as well as those as exist in the present. We would, then, for the correction of these conditions, go first rather slow with the strain that the body puts self to, and be mindful of those conditions as exist in the body regarding the eliminations, especially - for when there is the tendency, as is known to exist, where the body tends to those of the poor elimination, especially through the alimentary canal, on account of conditions existent in the physical functioning of the organs of elimination, and NOTABLY the liver, we would add those that are strengthening at this period to the excretions of same, so that the organ as a whole receives stimuli that will be effective in the functioning of same. Not as so much purgative that some portions are excited to the point where the secretions are stimulated, but where the organ itself is stimulated to the extent that, when the used forces are apparent in system, there is not recurrent poisons thrown out, so that the various portions of system function under stress and strain. First to the mucus producing, in face, head or nasal cavities, or in the antrum or soft tissue of face; again in the pains as come through the lower portion of the alimentary canal, again the limbs aching, and general debilitation. Use, then, as this:
-
Take Alophen, as is compounded, and we will find - by alternating these occasionally with other properties that act with same - to be an effectiveness just at this period, but if the body is to overtax self, then there may be expected TOO much reaction from same. Take it slow, take it easy. Not that the body refrain entirely from labors, under the strain through which it is passing, but rather that these be taken systematically. Be mindful of the diet. Be mindful of sufficient exercise away from labors. Much open air as is possible, exercising in same, and taking sufficient of the MENTAL exercise that RELAXES - but not overtaxes. Taking Alophen consistently - that is, one pellet each day for three to five days. Stop for two days. Then take those of Upjohn’s Phenolphthalein, or Phenolax, for two to three days. One pellet, see? or one wafer - of an evening. Occasionally - say once each week - use an enema to cleanse the colon. Preferably, when this is used, use a small amount of oil as first injection. Then tepid - not hot, not cold - water, but in each quart use at least a tablespoonful of Glyco-Thymoline, and at least once each week get a THOROUGH massage. Not popping bones - not just gymnastics, but a THOROUGH relaxation. We will find, keeping up local treatments as have been given for the antrum, and with such an elimination started, and with the system’s being mindful of the foods, we will find much, much bettered conditions for the body. There is sufficient stimuli in the Phenolax and in the other properties to aid the pulsation and the heart’s actions. Do that. Ready for questions.
-
(Q) Regarding the financial endeavors of the body, and these responsibilities upon which - or which depend upon the financial activities - now we have first, one who has spoken to me very often, and very plain and distinctly of late - Felix Fuld - regarding Macy. He told me 250 on this move - do not sell it before. It went to 250. Now, he said, it will gradually make the goal of 300, possibly by January. (A) Correct. Here, Mr. [900] - we [Felix Fuld speaking?] have indicated through this association of your friend here, who has seen that there is a purpose, intent, IN that you would do with that sought - would assist you in gaining - then we will guide you aright. Do not be fearful of the changes what come from period to period, for these we will warn you. We are through - with him.
Yes, [900] - [Elbert H. Gary speaking?] - assist us to assist those who would help. As I have said in meeting at the Board, how oft have you felt that presence!
[900], [Father, [5769], speaking?] be not unmindful of those things, my son, that thou hast found in thine hand to consider - that there are more also than dollars and cents in this, even, the affairs of an experience, for keep thine hands clean - in the ways that would guide you, as in the way I have given you.
-
(Q) Father, what is it, principally, that I do not heed in respect to that guidance, that would be given me, and that is given me at the Board? (A) These are heeded well, [900] - but rather let not self be unmindful for the purpose and intent for which these, as have just been given you, would aid - for, as they lacked in their abilities to meet the needs of the masses, the individuals, the groups, so may they aid YOU - through the purposes and intents of that given into thine keeping and trust to aid others.
-
(Q) What may we expect of the market next week? (A) These, as we find, will continue to be rather up and down, for the next eighteen to twenty days - yet many issues - as has been seen, and as may be given you - having definite, definite, trends.
-
(Q) What will the trend of Radio be? (A) Rather that of quick up and quick breaks. These will be gradually raised, though, to at least twenty - one twenty.
-
(Q) What will the trend during that time of Westinghouse be? (A) These, we find, are all of a same line, or of interests that make of these the speculative and favorite groups - yet these, Westinghouse - with others, will follow RAILS in the reactions, as the criterion for movements; for, as the combines that are making such coalitions possible, so the same interests will be able to make these, or this GROUP, as has been given you, possible.
-
(Q) Would it be well to hold the securities that we have in our [900] - [137] Brothers special account? (A) Be well to hold these, unless - as has been given you - that you are DIRECTED IMMEDIATELY to change same, see? for it has been promised that these will direct from period to period. Be just as faithful in the keeping of that given as in the use of that lent.
-
(Q) [195] - that’s [195] - brings up that it has been given that the years 1930-31 and 32 will be bad on the wheat crops and grain supply, and that a scarcity will be experienced of these commodities. Does this condition still exist? and will it militate towards a rise in grain and wheat prices? (A) Here we have had information concerning conditions in this specific direction. That there HAS been, for the last three to five years, a continued drain on the VISIBLE supply of this especial grain, there has been given as to how - in various portions - the SOURCE of this supply will be so HIT, or so changed, as to continue to affect this supply - and UNLESS there are material changes from the PRESENT outlook, these will become acute in 30, 31 and 32.
-
(Q) Can it, or will it be told if grain or wheat is a purchase at this time, at this level? (A) At the PRESENT period, no - not especially a purchase - for this one of the most speculative of all commodities, as man so often tampers with those things most necessary to his very existence, even as bread and, as is seen in the present, there are those that are MAKING for themselves those conditions that are unsavory in same. At the present, NOT a buy, but when there is the change, in the Spring quotations, then a buy. We are through for the present.

R1. 9/11/29 [900]‘s ltr. to EC:
Mr. Edgar Cayce, 115 - 35th Street, Virginia Beach, Va.
Dear Edgar:-
Enclosed please find our check in the amount of $5000, which is to be credited to the Association of National Investigators, Inc., to be used in the following manner:
$1000 to go towards glass enclosing the hospital porch,
$500 to go towards paying Dr. Berger Grace C. Berger, D.O.] for the temporary two weeks,
the remaining $3500 you will please hold in reserve to pay any real estate obligations as they come due on our lots, either for the land purchased across the boulevard, or for money due on lots adjoining to our present property.
How are you arranging about payments for osteopathic treatments by the patients to Dr. Berger? If we are paying her
500, whatever the hospital charges the patient for the treatments should come to the hospital, which would make it less than a full500 charge to the hospital. If the patients are paying Dr. Berger, then what they pay her should be subtracted from the500. No doubt, you are making the patients' usual2.00 osteopathic charge, and you are crediting same to the hospital account, out of which you will pay Dr. Berger her500, the amount for which I have included in this check. There will, therefore, be some left over from this500 to go towards payments that will fall due in the coming months, on property. With regard to a permanent osteopath, [195] has located a woman in Dayton, recommended, I believe, by Lydig [Lyman A. Lydic, D.O.], who might serve our purpose. She might fall into any one of three classes, that is, she might be the very one for the position; second, she might be good enough for the position, but still we might be able to hold out and get better, or third, she might not be fitted at all for our particular needs. She asks $200 a month, and room and board, which, of course, if she is the one for us, will be satisfactory. [195] has given me her name, and of course, before we do anything further, would like to have a reading taken asking first, which of the three above specified classes she comes under, and second, whether, under our present existing needs and condition, it would be well to employ her in a permanent position. Her name and address are as follows: [See 900-450, Par. 13-A on 8/24/29.]
Miss Ruth Hutchins, 209 Lorenz Avenue, Dayton, Ohio
Of course, both [195] and I will be interested to know the outcome of the reading, and he will not act regarding this until we hear further from you.
Your newspaper notation regarding grain, received, and I thank you for same, for it seems to fit the reading, and I will send same on to [195]. It appears as though they were trying to make Wheat look more plentiful than it is. I have no doubt that it will be a buy, if it isn’t already, yet, after what I heard in the reading, I am not particularly anxious to make money speculating in this commodity, as doing so seems like taking bread out of peoples’ mouth, not that I can help or control the situation, or that it would be wrong for me to do so, nor that I may not even change my mind about the matter, yet, my present inclinations are to leave same alone.
Trust everything is going all right at the hospital, and that progress is being made all along the line. Would appreciate your keeping me posted, as you know I am interested.
With kindest personal regards, I remain
Sincerely yours, [900] Enc.
R2. 9/16/29 He referred Mrs. [5555] for a Physical Reading.
R3. 9/16/29 Mr. [900]‘s letter to his wife’s cousin, Mr. [2350]:
I am in receipt of your two communications, and am forwarding same, together with check for your brother [2370]‘s reading, to the Association headquarters in Virginia Beach. Mr. Weiss, along with your brother, will, no doubt, hear from your brother, will, no doubt, hear from Cayce in the near future.
Our chief difficulty at the present time, is a tremendous overdemand for readings. We have on hand at the present time more readings than Cayce can fill in the next year, but I will certainly use whatever influence I may have to afford you, or anyone connected with you, any favor possible.
Our hospital at Virginia Beach is fast filling up, and those who want or need even near immediate attention, would really be better off making application for entrance thereto. Not only is this is a fact because of receiving better care, and of having the advantage of a reading being scientifically applied by sympathetic individuals in charge, but it is also a fact because we are forced to take care of those in the hospital, and desiring entrance to the hospital, before giving readings for those not having any intention of entering this Institution. This being the case, it is only natural that the hospital is filling up, and also is the reason that I was compelled to rush an extra New York doctor to the Beach last week. The reason for doing this is not that we are desirous of securing people in the institution, but rather, that we are responsible directly for people in our charge in the institution, and also can better watch, as well as obtain, results from the application of prescribed treatments when patients for whom the treatments are prescribed, are personally and directly to our charge. This does not mean that we are limiting all readings to those in our hospital, at least, not yet. It merely means that those who are willing to enter the institution, are put first on the list.
The hospital itself is really a beautiful place, more like a large home than a real hospital. It is so delightful that many people, including our own Board of Trustees and Officers, are besieging the place week-ends, for rest, recreation and pleasure. This is beginning to complicate affairs, owing to patients in the hospital, and we have, therefore, purchased more property on the other side of the Boulevard from the hospital, on which property we are going to construct a club house to House members of the Board and members of the Association, who desire to be near this beautiful work, and see it in process of application, or to study it, and at the same time enjoy the benefits and beauties of a lovely environment. We intend, in conjunction with the club house, to develop a 9 hole golf course. The club house is to be located right on the Beach, and in front of the club house there will be tables and chairs, and sun umbrellas, right on the Beach.
You no doubt, know that Virginia Beach is noted for the health qualities of Iodine and Radium, which qualities are present in the sand. Thus, sand packs taken at Virginia Beach prove very vitalizing to the system. To return to the club house, it will, not only contain a Living Room, Dining Room, and all other rooms that go with such a building, but also bath houses, and possibly a swimming pool. Across the road, on the hillside, stands the hospital, behind which is a tennis court, shuffle board and Croquet grounds. The club house will be completed in about a year, or possibly by summer.
I tell you this to show you what a beautiful development we are evolving at Virginia Beach.
Under separate cover, I am sending you a copy of the hospital pamphlet. You may wonder what we are going to do as the demand for readings grow. We have been instructed in readings that another who can do work like Cayce, will come to us in the course of next year. This will help matters, but, of course, we cannot hope to heal everyone. What our work really is, is a demonstration of the fact that the mind does possess the ability (if those abilities are educated and developed) to experience from a higher than physical or three dimensional viewpoint, and that the mind may, from this fourth dimensional viewpoint, obtain knowledge such as is obtained in physical readings, that seems impossible of acquisition to the normal physical side of our mind or subconscious side of mind. In Cayce’s case, this forth dimensional side of mind or subconscious side of mind, is very highly developed, and thus he may obtain the knowledge given in readings. In each of our own cases, we may likewise so educate our mind as to be able to use the fourth dimensional viewpoint, which is possible to the mind, and thus obtain like knowledge, although not possible to the same degree, that Cayce is able to do it. The fact that knowledge so obtained is worth something to human self, to human endeavor, and to human life in every field, proves the close relationship existing between the two sides of the human mind, and of human life, i.e., the close relationship between the subconscious or spiritual, and the sensuous or physical mind. The point is that we all possess the subconscious side of mind, and if we seek to educate ourselves to be able to use that side of our mind, we may obtain for ourselves such knowledge as Cayce demonstrates in his readings may be obtained by and through the subconscious mind. It is not to be had outside, but it is to be had inside, of our mind - of ourselves. That is what our work demonstrates, and it is the educational side of our work, more important even than the physical side. It proves immortality, it proves the continuity of life, it proves evolution, reincarnation, and the godliness of man, the God within forces of love, and care for His Own, is everlasting.
In lieu of above, you may see why our lectures in Virginia Beach are drawing a capacity crowd. You may also see why two classes I am conducting, one in Virginia Beach, and one in New York, are being attended with a great degree of interest by a group of students. Some day I hope one of my students will, himself, become a teacher and conduct a class in your City. Of course, our classes are composed of adults only.
Needless to say, [136], who is on our Board, in a same manner, has become deeply interested, and is herself deriving much benefit and receiving much happiness for the work. The Chairman of our Educational Department, is Dr. William Moseley Brown, of Washington & Lee University. The latter has resigned his position only to take up the candidacy for the Governor of the State of Virginia. Should he not be elected, he has been offered the post of President of Washington & Lee University. What he thinks of our work is incorporated in a white pamphlet, which I am also sending to you. I also send to you a copy of a letter addressed to Mr. [257], one of our Officers and Trustees, by Dr. Bernard Smith, one of the leading physicians of Asheville, N.C. This letter is regarding one of our patients, a Mr. [2597], who suffered from sleeping sickness due to a Streptococci germ. He came to our hospital in terrible shape, and it looked for a while as though we were to have our first death, but we diligently applied information given in his reading, and he is today a well man.
We are doing a beautiful work, a wonderful work and no thinking man, such as yourself, should die without seeing it and giving it some study.
Be assured I will do all I can to secure for your brother and brother-in-law their readings. And also accept for yourself and your wife, and Aunt Ada, my love, in which [136] joins me.
Sincerely yours, [900] […]:MS
R4. 9/17/29 EC’s ltr. to [900]:
Dear [900]:-
Well, yesterday morning I phoned [195] - told him that Dr. and Mrs. House were leaving. They will arrive there today about two-thirty. The Doctor is not in good shape at all. Certainly hope though that he improves right along. The change, no doubt, will be helpful to him. He hated to go, but felt it was the best thing. [195] told me he would meet them, and also would notify Lydic that the Doctor would be there for treatment this afternoon.
I understood also from [195] that he will meet you here Saturday.
A check-up on most of the people at the hospital yesterday
- all seem to be getting along very nicely. Talking with Dr. Berger yesterday - says she is becoming very, very much interested in the work and is quite anxious now to have a life reading for herself.
I insisted on Dr. House and [195] getting in touch with the doctor from Dayton, and letting us know whether they thought she would be able to fill the place here or not. If so, we would try to get a reading between now and Saturday, so we could come to some decision while you all are here. [165] is to be here Saturday morning also.
Mr. [2597] has left the hospital. Also [5575] and his wife. This, of course, decreases the number somewhat. Possibly there will be others coming in soon. If we can just get everything straightened out now, I don’t see why we shouldn’t be able to do some wonderful work.
I received yours of the 11th, with the check. Many thanks. This should take care of everything at the present time - though we had to put up a deposit of $500 to the State Highway before we could go to work, or even get bids of the main. This, of course, is to come back when the work has been inspected and pronounced satisfactory. I hope we won’t have any more trouble with it.
The amounts as are being collected for the osteopathic treatments are coming to the hospital treasury, and Dr. Berger is being paid, of course, out of that you sent down to take care of this. I believe we will be able to get Dr. Berger to stay another week, if we find that it is necessary. Even though we had the doctor from Dayton, it might be very well to have the two work together for a few days, and get everything straightened out - if it is possible to get them to do that. We are, of course, in a right bad shape - trying to run a hospital without a doctor.
We are to have the bids in on the water main tomorrow, and I will hold this over until I talk with you Sunday, so we can come to some decision about it.
Had a beautiful letter yesterday from [137].
I wish I knew how to write you, [900], regarding the letter you wrote me some days ago. Sometimes I feel there are so many things we have to think about, that I DO become more involved in commercialism than I should. I don’t mean that I want to shun any of the responsibility, or try to make excuses for myself in any way. Even though I have had to work much harder with readings in the last few weeks than I ever have done in my life, and while it has been unexpected even to me to be able to hold up under it, somehow, somewhere, the strength has come to keep going, and I am believing that it is true we will not be required to do more than we are given the strength to do, if we will use the strength and KNOW that it is not of ourselves but of Him in whom we live and move and have our being. It is the same thing all along the line. We have just got to get that fact in the minds and the hearts of individuals, that we are assisting THEM to find their relationship with that all-creative energy, God, and that through Him we are able to do whatever we desire, if we keep those desires and purposes one with His. For, as the readings have said over and over again, “First seek the Lord while He may be found, then all these things will be added unto you”, and whether it be the needs of a physician to carry on our institution, or whether it be for the strength to give the information necessary for the individual seeking, or whether it be the moneys to pay for the various things necessary to be used for the carrying on - these things will be provided in His way. We have had some very peculiar things to come up recently. We have had things that apparently were necessary to make us recognize this very truth that so long as we trust in dollars and in the prestige it may bring, we are weakening our own strength. so long as we trust in our own abilities we are made weak, even by that trust. But when we put our trust wholly in Him, and ask that we may be used as the channel through which service may be rendered to our fellowman, then all these things come. It isn’t God that has need of our little pitiful labors. It isn’t that He is in need of anything from us. Rather that we are in need of everything from Him, and we must so conduct our lives as to keep Him first and foremost in everything we do and say.
We had a very good crowd last Sunday. I took advantage of your suggestion and used the big room, and it was full to overflowing. A great, great many are looking forward to your address next Sunday.
Certainly hope you are feeling a lot better yourself. Trust that things are going along nicely for you in every way.
Again thanking you, and with kindest personal regards from each and every one here,
Ever the same, [Edgar Cayce] EC:GD
R5. 9/18/29 EC’s letter to Mr. [900]:
We are sending you a copy of the letter we have written Mr. [2350] regarding the reading for his brother-in-law. I think your idea is good. We are trying to do this very thing with all of our appointments. It is too bad that we can’t do more - but if we can get things in shape at the hospital such that we will be able to take care of those we have, I am sure we will be able to do a lot of good.
I suppose it will ever be as it was even of old. There were many widows in the days of the famine in the Holy Land, but only to one did Elijah go. There were many lepers in the days of Elisha, but only Namon was healed.
Will see you and talk with you Saturday. With kindest personal regards from all, EC:GD.
