This psychic reading given by Edgar Cayce at his office, 115 West 35th Street, Virginia Beach, Va., this 22nd day of March, 1930, in accordance with request made by self - Mr. [900].

1. [900]: You will have before you the body of [900], present in this room, and the body’s various associations and the knowledge the body has attained through experiences of the past. In the first, you will consider that as I was commanded to ask about, relating to my physical; for last night, striving to overcome the antrum trouble or congestion in the facial region, I was told, “Ask about this in a reading”. In the first, then, you will take into consideration the physical of [900], and give me what necessary knowledge I should have to overcome physical difficulties. In the second, we will consider - and you will answer questions regarding - other experiences in the life of this body, as they pertain to his various fields of endeavor.

2. EC: Yes, we have the body, the enquiring mind, [900]. This we have had before.

3. In the physical forces of the body, here we find as indicated in that presented the body, and as has been given there may come the ability of the body to, within self, through concentration, so accentuate that within the system as to overcome conditions as bring distress or distraughtness to the physical body. Hence there was given the instructions for the body to study anatomical forces as relating to the body, or anatomy.

4. In the relationship also there is found that there must come for such conditions that ability to so concentrate self and self’s own mental consciousness as to BECOME AWARE WITHIN self OF the body’s complying with that being wrought IN the system when distresses arise. Hence, as has been seen through the various information as has been given regarding physical conditions in individuals, that, that necessary to awaken the consciousness from within an individual is necessary in its application to the physical forces OF the body to bring recuperative and resuscitative influences in the body. THIS the process as MUST come for EVERY living organism, as illness or disease is caused in a human body. The body being made up of ALL there is WITHOUT the body in its whole anatomical force, and its essence being that of all from without; hence all from WITHOUT corresponds to a VIBRATION created from within. The sensation OF its activity brought into consciousness by the Spirit Force, or Life within the individual, and is of a cosmic or a universal influence.

5. In meeting, then, the needs of the specific conditions as exist with this body in the present condition - [900] we are speaking of, present in this room - there is seen that the condition as exists in the mucus or soft tissue in face, head and neck, suffers from the inability to so stimulate circulation to that portion of the body as to remove the drosses from the system, and the drosses - becoming infected through the activities of the used forces - produce one BELOW that of the necessary activity to remove same from system. Hence the necessity of CLEANSING same with something, or with that as is in correct vibratory forces as is necessary to set up, to not only OVERCOME but to create that position or that condition in the surface of such tissue as to bring life resuscitating forces; the activities necessary to build up the atomic influence within the forces of the system itself as to REMOVE conditions.

6. Then, the continuation of those as will be found in the use of that as has been given, and in keeping the stimuli sufficient in those of the upper dorsal and cervical region as to stimulate the circulation through same, both with the light, with the manipulation, with the application, these will AID the body IN its activity from within self to reach that consciousness. Then continue within self in that silence as may be attained by turning self as introspective and seeing that as is necessary to be rebuilt within the system, acting in such a way and manner as to rebuild same. THROUGH this MAY one keep themselves young; may one REBUILD WITHIN themselves and prolong the PHYSICAL forces as is desired IN self! Ready for questions - we want to ask some here!

7. (Q) One, then, may in truth, by such application, remain in the physical as long as is desired? (A) May remain in the physical as long as the ability lies within self to so apply the forces from without and within as to build or bring resuscitation to all forces from within, and, as desire is the father of ACTIVITY, so is that brought INTO activity become life itself. Nothing grows, nothing remains alone unless dead. A mind, a body that sits alone and considers the outside and never turning that within to the out, nor that without from within, soon finds DROSSES setting up in the system; for development is change. Change is the activity of knowledge from within. Learn to LIVE! Then there IS no death, save the transition, when desired. See?

8. (Q) Then it is true, such individuals that I have been reading about and studying have actually lived in physical form for thousands of years as they testify in these writings? (A) MANY live who have never died as yet!

9. (Q) Then also it is true, one may preserve youth? (A) One may preserve youth, even as is desired, will they pay the PRICE as is NECESSARY; but one adding this, that, or the other to the system to become congenial with that known from within self is an abnormality to itself, must pay its price.

10. (Q) That is, one must consider the diet, as well as application of knowledge obtained from within? (A) To be sure!

11. (Q) Is meat conducive to age? (A) Not necessarily. One thinks so, it is! Wasn’t there given as from in the beginning, to those first of Promise, “Of the fruit of the field ye shall eat”? Again there is found when there is given to man the activities in knowing good and evil, that the beast of the field of certain natures, that made of certain vibrations brought certain vibrations from within the same system.

12. (Q) Is my development proceeding towards that desired goal? (A) Proceeding properly in the proper direction. Take TIME to be holy, even as take time to concentrate; not concentration in that form as is ordinarily given to understand that it is the essence of something boiled down, but rather that concentration in, as was given in the days of old, “Consecrate yourselves by the washing of the body with pure water and opening the soul to that influence from without, calling on Him whom ye would serve”.

Remember that as has been given - STUDY this and know what it means. “He that receiveth a prophet in the NAME of a prophet RECEIVETH a prophet’s reward.”

13. (Q) Now, in the other experience in which I was striving to become self-conscious of my spiritual self or the inner body on a spiritual plane. Some progress I have made toward the application of the theories and hypotheses I have been teaching. I was told, “You are doing the very thing you desire. Realize it. Get a reading on it.” (A) This the same as has oft been given, that in the application there becomes the knowledge and understanding that one may seek; or this may be ILLUSTRATED in THIS manner, that the self and those that self would instruct may gain the more perfect understanding. The Father, God, Jehovah, Shu - ALL mean one and the same! God IS! The Spirit in action, moving, brought into being the world. See? In the physical world came the Spirit, made manifest in the flesh. Then the Father, the Son, the Spirit - ONE! So, in one - becoming conscious of that taking place within self’s own development - first begins with the physical being, the MIND, this bringing into being through concentration of thought, or of emptying self, that the WILL, the desire, that sought, that expression, may be open to those influences. First the physical, then the opening - and GOD is present. We just reverse the order. Through Him we have access to the Father.

14. (Q) Then, it is true, as I saw swimming in essence a coagulation that I sought to turn into bread, and heard them say, “He will do it yet” - it is true that I may so make manifest as did He while in the flesh. (A) Greater things than ye have seen ME do YE shall do in MY NAME. He that receiveth a prophet in the name of a prophet shall receive a prophet’s reward. He that makes manifest in self the WILL of the Father, through the application of THAT IN hand, and letteth the light so shine that not even the EVIL is spoken good of nor the good spoken evil of, becometh one WITH the Father.

15. (Q) In Nice I fell sick. Was the application at this time - (A) That might be manifest even that as has been given, in that “Man must be born of water and of the spirit would he come to an understanding of that being sought in a material world.” So, as in this, there are conditions ever in the experience of a body that may bring in that knowledge of the essence OF self’s relationship TO the Whole, see? This then is true, “Whom the Lord loveth He chasteneth”, and purgeth every one; purging as by fire. Water, as manifest, the BEGINNING of life. Over large bodies of water, then, do many men of many lands learn that that is hard to be understood by those on land. Why? The variation IN the vibrations as are set in motion has much to do WITH the changes as come about in the activities of every atomic force in a human body. Hence many are given to dwell near large bodies of water, where sands and sea, where much comes that may not be touched by hands, may not be seen with the human eye, but is felt in the heart and trains the soul. Wonders are often given as to why the restlessness of waves causes QUIETNESS from within. The answering of that from within self to the far call of the Spirit of God “MOVED over the face of waters and dry land appeared”; that man in his coming might make MANIFEST the varied forms of the expression of GOD in his universe.

16. (Q) It is true then, this purging of sickness was foreknown and that the recovery therefrom would be considered a miracle? (A) Would be considered a miracle, in that the manifestations that have been spoken of, been preached from many a platform, spoken of in many places, made manifest in the life, in the lives of many.

17. (Q) In the various experiences obtained during my journey, have I progressed and may I continue to reach a goal in which I may apply the universal forces in an occult fashion to accomplish those things already spoken of? (A) PROGRESSION is being made. PROGRESS is ever onward, and OCCULT a poor name. Rather that the UNIVERSALITY of self’s relation is made manifest in that spoken, that lived, that taught. We are through.

Dear Edgar:

In reply to your communication, would say that [137] will answer you regarding the matter of the screens for the new house.

As regards your visit to us in Deal, please be assured that it was a pleasure to have you and we sincerely regret not being able to entertain you for a longer period. Be assured you and your family are always welcome guests in our home now as ever before and when you come up for the August meeting of the Board of Governors, whenever we decide to call same; please consider this an invitation to again spend whatever time you find able with us at the shore. We were sorry your neuritis was troubling you and trust you are fully recovered from this attack.

Somehow I cannot get it out of my mind that if the work you and I are doing is to mean what we want it to mean, we should demonstrate our ability to use our ability to raise our conscious to so direct the creative forces as to keep our physical in order. I must admit I am making a bum job of it. I am certainly improving over previous conditions but am not out of the woods yet. I cannot bring back the old energy and I seem to tire so terribly quickly nor is my weight improving a great deal. I do believe, however, I am making some progress in building a little blood and if I can continue along these lines, I believe it will not be long before I am back to normal.

You, no doubt, wonder as does Sugrue also question my delay in the matter of the “Annual and the New Tomorrow”. This may temporarily hold up our publication department but I simply am not in condition to work at it at the present time and while it may not seem fair to hold it up due to my own ill health, yet somehow that within me tells me that this is something for which I should be at least partly responsible and if it must be held up for a month or so, it probably will be better that way than the other. If, however, this is not the opinion of most of the members of the board, I am more than satisfied that the “Annual and the New Tomorrow” should go to press without me.

As you know, your readings have warned me time and again that the slightest mental upset will cause me serious trouble and this, I do not want to bring about if I can help it. I do not want to have to leave the work entirely for a prolonged period, nor, for that matter, leave the physical entirely; and with my depleted vitality at the present time, I simply have none other to give than what little I must expend in the business. However, I have been promised that upon return of the physical it shall be restored not only to normal; but be stronger than ever, therefore, I think it worth waiting for. Furthermore, if I did not go into the publication matters before they went to press, I would worry about it and somehow I just do not want to do that. I am sure after my physical is restored we will be able to get the magazine out regularly. But then, if it seems selfish at the moment, I must beg leniency of the board until the physical that has been broken trying to build up that which is so dear to my heart is again, by the grace and help of the Master, restored to me. The latest development along these lines seems to be more palpitation during the night and during periods of sleeplessness and if this condition continues, I may have to come to you again for another check physically on this. However, I am fighting this as hard as possible and believe I may be able to conquer it myself. I’ll say this, everybody around me has been so helpful and so considerate that if I do not recuperate it won’t be their fault and, of course this means that you too have responded to every request for a physical so immediately and have been more than kind and considerate to me and I was trying to show some little appreciation therefor when you visited our home last time.

Saturday night

Dear [900]:-

Just a little line to thank you for yours of the 22nd. Regarding the shades, I attended to the matter - got them at the price, though I will have to do the work of installing them myself. As I think I know from experience what to do with such things, it’s not much of a job. Cayce Hospital - new nurses’ home]

I do appreciate your invitation to visit again in your home. I have always enjoyed every minute I have ever spent with you and [136]. It has always been helpful to me in more ways than one, for which I will always feel indebted to you both.

Regarding our abilities to demonstrate that which we attempt to give others, I am sure you are absolutely correct. More and more I realize, I think, that if one is able to hold the consciousness - the Christ consciousness - one is able to meet and combat everything that may arise, whether regarding physical conditions or mental things that arise from dealings with fellow man in any way, shape, form or fashion. We find truly the SPIRIT willing, but the flesh very weak - and more and more we are reminded that the lawgiver was correct, “THIS day there is set before thee good and evil. Choose thou.” Oft we feel that we are very much in the same position as Paul must have been. The thorn is in the flesh, for we have builded it there and must meet it. We can only do this by denying self in EVERY form, and that’s hard for all of us to do. I feel at times that I am making headway, and then FLOP. Possibly by the next day I’m up again - and perhaps it is very much as has been said, it doesn’t matter how often we fall, but do we get up again.

Yes, Tom has spoken something about the data for the Annual and the New Tomorrow. I feel that you are quite right, that this should NOT go to press until you have had the opportunity to go into the matter in the right way, and it is certainly NOT the right way to jeopardize yourself in any way or manner that it may be gotten out at any particular time. We want to be very sure that we have WHAT we want to say before we say it, and I do not feel that it is neglect, ‘Passing the Buck,’ nor even a delay, for it is not to be gone into until you feel - through the urge from within, not from things without - that it is time to take the matter up.

I certainly hope that you will continue to be on the improve. A great many were disappointed last week end that you were not here. Not hearing from you, I hardly knew just what to say. I received your wire this morning saying you would not be down this week end, and that is what we told those who phoned to know whether or not you were coming. I don’t think you should come when you don’t feel equal to the strain that is necessarily put on you by the trip, to say nothing of the many things that are piled on your under such circumstances. Please give my kindest regards and love to [136] and the boy. He’s a great boy!

R8. 8/27/30 Mr. [257]‘s letter to EC: “I want to say to you that your letter to [137] [see under 137-129 Reports, 8/22/30] is very much appreciated by me, and it’s a very fair, square thing for you to do to put yourself in the position of being absolutely ALL to blame, which is not the case at all. I positively know that [900] knew all about the Doctor’s furniture. He also knew your plans on the second bldg. [nurses’ home], yet they pitch the blame on me entirely [for ordering the furniture]. I appreciate your attitude very deeply, and feel very incensed that you should be placed in such a position, but I can see you are doing so to protect the unsettled conditions that have arisen. The amount of difference [in the furniture] only amounts to 700, so Mrs. [[189], my assistant] will write them that all has been taken care of except the 2,000 chg’d to the Cayce Hospital, and $700 to you. (On the amt. I’ll talk to you when I see you.)

“[900] and [[903], my wife] had an hour and a half talk about ME. Why he has any cause to be sore at me I know not. If his business is bad it’s because of his lack of attention to it now, and the way he handled it on yesterday and during the past crash.

“Judge, I can not close my doors and keep in conference all day long [as [900] does], and not see my trade. I can not have seances all day long - but that is entirely their [[900]‘s and [137]‘s] business. [900] said God was not good to me like he was to them, so He didn’t give me a personal guide in my office [like their Mrs. [3734]]. Well, I won’t even give it importance enough to answer it. all I say is, if he keeps his mental strain, he will need all of our help. Judge, my word of honor to you, I’ve no malice or bad feelings in the matter - only pity for [900].

“[903] suggested [900] take a rdg. to see if he was doing wrong in my actions to you, and he refused. Why doesn’t he tell me all this, and why to [903]? [900] is mad because he found out I gave money to you instead of the Cayce Hospital. Since when has HE the right to direct the channel for my money? I pay for my rdgs. to the Ass’n. Well, Judge, don’t be disturbed. When I see you we will talk it over. Again I say, I have no hard feelings to the boys [[900] & [137]], but it’s not fair for [900] to say he doesn’t like my business methods - especially after he is the direct cause of my losing a fortune…

“I’ll write you more tomorrow. Just have faith in me and with God’s will you and I will show the world our faith has been proven in Him 100%. You can always depend upon me - just as I can on you, regardless of what others may say or do. My love to the family.” Always sincerely, [257]

This is to advise you that Mr. [900] will conduct a course on the FOURTH DIMENSION under the auspices of the Philosophical Department of Atlantic University, both in Virginia Beach and in New York City. If you are interested in taking this course, you may communicate with him at his New York address, …

The course will take up 18 lectures, and in New York will begin Wednesday, October 8th at 8:30 P.M., and continue every other Wednesday thereafter until the end of May. The course will be as follows:

ELEMENTARY COURSE

I. Proof of the existence of the Fourth Dimension in terms of,

A. Outside world. B. Our internal subjective world.

II. What the fourth dimension must be in terms of,

A. Physics or the outside world. B. Mathematics C. Psychology, or the subjective world.

III. Verification of the fourth dimension in terms of individual and personal experiences.

A. Study of introspective experiences of others, (James’ Varieties of Religious Experiences, Ospensky’s Tetorium Organum, and others). B. Our constant process of experiencing from a fourth dimensional viewpoint, and the first suggestions for the establishment of a process that will enable the individual to recall these experiences to the physical mind.

ADVANCED UNIVERSITY COURSE

I. Study of introspective experiences in terms of

A. DREAM EXPERIENCES.

(a) Differentiation between the physical and subconscious mind. (b) Clairvoydance and clairvoyance. (c) Direct and indirect experiences. R12. GD’s note: I attended the local classes. Mr. [900] brought with him from NY Mrs. [3734]. She was used as an example in the class at times of how psychic ability could be developed. Mr. [900] would ask her about her experiences for the class’s benefit. I remember her first explanation, that when Mr. [900] wanted to know what was going on in Virginia Beach, she, Mrs. [3734], would go to sleep and travel to Va. Beach to get the information for him.

R26. 5/23/35 Mr. [257]‘s letter: “As to [900]…wrote he would be here. I feel that it was wrong of [900] to take 30,000 in cash - and then take my stock away through [3734]'s and still expect me to pay another 7500. In other words he is getting $37,500 for his stock and keeping the stock. The good Lord knows I want nothing from him, but to clear up the [3734] situation that he created - and the other debts that he put on me through them and his operations.”

R27. 5/29/35 EC’s letter to Mr. [257]: When does the matter come up about [900]? He was here last week, opening the hotel [old Cayce Hospital]. I didn’t see him, but Miss Gladys sat on the bus and talked with him all the way in to Norfolk as he was leaving. It seems that the same ones [3734’s] are running the place.” [GD’s note: He talked pleasantly about himself and [137], about argument between [137] and [140] as to whether or not daughter [143] should go to Europe, etc. I asked him if he was doing any studying now, and he said no, that he was devoting his full time to business.

R29. 9/1/35 Mr. [257]‘s letter to EC: “Judge, you have no idea how deep that girl [3734] must have cut into [900]‘s life to be able to break into such friendships. Well, we will leave all that to God in His own way and time to handle.”

R30. 12/28/35 Mr. [257]‘s note to EC: “I had lunch with [900] and discussed the case - it will be interesting to you when I see you.”

R31. 2/2/36 Mr. [257]‘s letter to EC: “By the way, did I tell you I had lunch with [900] and what the conversations were the day before Xmas - and what he wanted me to do - and that he spent 5,000 to get next to the Judge, and it was decided in such a way to allow me to go to appeal on LAW? Well, it was very interesting - and the statements he made. Your name came up, and with quite a discussion. He'll come back some day and like a baby, too. He said women were his undoing. He has had his cross and will continue to pay dearly. He offered to give me 2,000 to settle even in face of my suit, if I would settle with [3734] - another 2,000 - in other words call my suit off - and pay her 2,000 - and clean it all up. R33. 6/15/47 GD’s note:

I met him [900] Sunday morning, 6/15/47, as I was crossing 17th and Baltic; his car stopped on Baltic just before turning onto 17th. It was as if we were alone in the world

• if we had planned to meet at exactly the same moment like that it couldn’t have happened so smoothly. After exclaiming over how well each one of us looked, he asked what I was doing now. When I told him I was working with Hugh Lynn on the “records,” he said, “No, I didn’t know. After all, I’ve been out of touch all these years… It is really a compliment to you that I remember you - I haven’t seen you for fifteen years!” I told him I wanted to see and talk with him - wanted his advice about the indexing, etc. He said, “Oh, you don’t need me when you have Hugh Lynn - he’s the professor - yes, he’s the professor.” About that time the light changed and he drove on. Apparently he still is, and always has been, jealous of [or antagonistic to] Hugh Lynn.

R38. 5/29/51 HLC’s letter addressed to “Dear [900] and [137]:

I am writing to ask you to see and talk with me. Naturally your first question is, rightfully, “What is there to talk about?” Let me list the items which are on my heart and mind:

1. I would like to tell you very briefly of the direction of some of the Association activities since the last time we met. I believe that we have, painfully and slowly, begun to carry out a few of the principles which you laid down in directing the affairs of the first Association. I would like for you to understand how strongly I fell that your vision was clear in connection with the ideals and purposes. I think I have come to understand, through years of work, many of the obstacles that you faced then and in a simple, matter of fact report I want to point our the progress which has been made along the lines you laid down.

2. I would like an opportunity to assure you both that there is not, nor has there ever been, any condemnation or criticism in regard to your associations with us. It seems right and fitting that, at least once, we sit down together and clear up any possible misunderstanding which may exist.

3. I would like to request your permission to print in our semi-monthly publication, for Association members, a lecture which you, [900], delivered at Birmingham, Alabama on January 28, 1928. I believe that Association members can understand and appreciate what you said then. Certainly you were way ahead of your time in those years.

4. I would like an opportunity to tell you, briefly, what I know to be true - that Edgar Cayce died with only love and compassion in his mind and heart for you both; there was perhaps disappointment, but certainly as much because of his own weakness as anything else.

It is not my intention, by such a meeting, to attempt to influence you in any way other than to clear our minds of any confusion or misunderstanding which may exist in regard to our present Association activities.

Will you be my guest at dinner at the Pine Tree Inn on Wednesday or Thursday, June 6th or 7th, at 7:00 o’clock?

I have written you rather that just dropping in to see you, because I want you to know what I want to talk about and I feel, too, that an informal meeting of this kind will be simpler and easier for all of us.

Surely nothing can be lost by such conversation and a great deal may be gained, not only for us - as three individuals - but for many other people.

Please drop me a note on this. If both of these times are unsatisfactory, let set another date.

R39. 4/9/54 Mr. [900] died suddenly at 7:30 A.M. of a heart attack.

R40. 4/10/54 GD’s note: Mrs. […] told me that Mr. [900] and Mr. [137] had rented an apartment from her. She had been out to dinner with them the night before (4/8/54) and [900] was alright except that he said he felt tired. Early next a.m. [900] asked [137] to call the doctor, he felt a pain around his heart. Before the doctor arrived he was dead. It was pronounced a heart attack.

I attended the funeral. The little Catholic Church was crowded. The Priest eulogized him, speaking of [900]‘s great generosity to the church and community, etc.
