This psychic reading given by Edgar Cayce this 30th day of March, 1930, at the home of Mr. [137], …, New York City.

Time of Reading Unknown. New York City.

1. (Q) [137]: [140]‘s physical? (A) EC: Conditions change, some better, some accentuated. While changed conditions not wholly detrimental, there are disturbances that cause uneasiness. These, as has been given, have to do with the manner in which the portion of the system coordinates with distribution of lymphatic circulation, hence, soft tissue in head and throat gives distress. These conditions, as we find, come and go. The body feels good or bad, dependent by cycle of eliminations through system. Eliminations of whole system should be kept accentuated to relieve the condition. In present condition calcidine [Calcidin] should be taken of an evening, or when there is lowest resistance in system, or when congestion is the greatest. Should be taken in 2-1/2 or 3 grain tablets, or may be dissolved in water and sipped occasionally when irritation in the throat is disturbing. Should be taken in small quantities. Best in this liquid form. Light application good, but not under existent conditions. Should get plenty of normal sunlight and open air. Higher altitude also very beneficial.

Those conditions respecting reproduction may still be carried on in a manner in keeping with that as has been outlined. The mental attitude is that which must be considered most, not as an exhortation, but rather as an illustration, the following:

The body, physical, mental and spiritual, are concerned, all in one, one in all. There is the physical body with its attributes that are peculiar to physical forces, and there is the mental body with its attributes. The physical body partakes of the mental forces with its attributes, and there is the spiritual body with its attributes.

In this entity there are fears mental which have effect upon the physical body and its attributes, and especially do we find the accentuation in physical, through forces in physical, that are both physical and mental functioning, which forces are controlled to spiritual forces in system that are attributes of sensory and sympathetic nerve system become most active, and distressing cause an idea or thought as its sphere of activity through that called environmental effect upon the whole physical body, hence, in times back when nervous system was effected and the nerve forces subjugated, conditions were brought about that bring present distresses, where the sensory system acts through physical forces of body as in that of throat, nasal, ear, and central portion of the system, namely, through Solar Plexus. In the mental body, with its attributes, in physical functioning through sensory organs (eyes, ears, etc.), and with all sensory forces such as feeling, touch, taste, etc., become accentuated at times through activity of war within as respecting control of forces. In spiritual, these attributes war imagination, versus desire, desire physical, mental, or spiritual, so also may be the imagination, for their operations are through activity of mental body as applied to physical body, yet, rather a thing apart even as sensory system is a part from any portion of that as has become habit; for one is seed sown, and the other is as that grown from desire and imagination.

2. (Q) Now, what has this to do with the physical conditions of this body? [140] (A) Accentuations may be met by those forces in desire and imagination made one that the mental body may develop that necessary to meet emergencies in the physical body. Be not afraid. Conform self to that necessary to creation within, as will build for all the forces in the body the desire of soul and heart, and all will be well. The foods taken, the activities as partaken, and all must cooperate through the ideal held for the betterment of the attunement of the body physical, mental, spiritual.

3. (Q) How many tablets should be taken? (A) Take 1 every three hours, if necessary, but a sip of solution should be taken often, and would be preferable.

4. (Q) How much water should be used for the solution? (A) 2 tablespoonfuls, no more. Take for 2 to 3 days. Do not worry about perspiration, but keep out of drafts. Keep the manipulations in conformity, ninth dorsal up, and especially, first, second and third dorsal to the head.

5. (Q) How many days should the solution be taken? (A) As long as necessary.

6. (Q) Will it be a boy or girl? (A) As desired. John may come, or if you desire, Joseph.

7. (Q) When will the event take place? (A) Early part December, or latter part of November.

8. (Q) Doctor says end of October.

(A) As we see, it will be end of November, or early December.

9. (Q) Is it John’s will to reincarnate in this environment? (A) Dependent upon those who may be physically responsible for the entering of John into the mundane sphere, for with the desire this becomes as a law.

10. (Q) [140]‘s dream. (A) Fear only. Hold that in mind, that need, desire.

11. (Q) Is this a divine conception? (A) A divine conception may be made.

12. (Q) Did [137]‘s calling on force assist [143]? (A) Played a great part. “Know Ye This, A Physical Body is in Vibration with all Exterior Forces in the Universe.” In the material plane are properties that in their vibration may aid body to gain that enacted in the physical body. Even as the clay and spittal brought healing to Bartemius. [Bartimaeus - Mark 10:46]

13. (Q) Was the healing in the clay, or in the desire of divine made manifest, that the vibration might be brought to full force in the material world, the material forces so used as to act with the divine. (A) Then in the particular condition with the body here, if you want a concrete application use marrow of beef, that anointed behind the ear and on the throat, in evenings. Use same with blessings as sought by self in bringing divine application. Then do not laud self to [but] give Him the praise.

14. (Q) Should he [137] use the marrow of bone for [143] literally? (A) The upper joint of hind leg cooked as [137] likes to eat it.

15. (Q) What cause was [137]‘s stock market slump pre-ordained as a test, or just an accident? (A) He whom the Lord loveth, he chasteneth and loveth every- one. In application by that gain by self’s intuition alone should be applied. Make a differentiation between being guided, and opening self that the desire of the heart may be accomplished in physical activities. In stocks, in bonds, in friendships, in the stranger, whatsoever thou doest, do with that singleness of purpose to the glorification of Him who works with, and through you. Do not condemn self nor rail on the activities that have gone forth. Rather use same as a stepping stone for proper understanding.

16. (Q) Is this force working through me [137], the brother of Jude? (A) The Master, yes.

17. (Q) Is Mendosis (?) still alive? (A) Not as we find it.

18. (Q) Would we meet or contact any of this Mendosis group? (A) Some the body has contacted. Many the body will know. Do not accept all until test is made, even as of self is made.

19. (Q) Does this mean beware of fraud? (A) Beware of fraud in self - that is, when concepts arise through association of individuals and their reflections from within, test same, - pray over same.

20. (Q) [900]‘s experience? (Jesus Buchu) (?) (A) In the glory of that made manifest in this experience vaunt not self as of one being, especially in doubt, but rather as one offered an opportunity to make manifest that phase of man’s experience as may be manifested through various forces in spiritual, in mental and in the physical body.

R7. 6/2/30 Letter from [137] to EC: “Dear Edgar, ‘United we stand, divided we fall.’ These are not idle words and must be taken and studied, and the truth extracted from the words. Please understand that this letter is inspired in true friendship between you and myself and is not the result of any collusion, but is truly the result of my observation both as to relationship of material facts, and information given in your readings.

“I do not intend to hide my thoughts from you by quibbling in words, and I am writing it long-hand so that it is between you and me. If when you finish reading this you feel resentment towards me it will be only because of misunderstanding by you, of what is meant from my heart, not my physical. If you say to yourself, ‘why does he so write me when I have sacrificed for so many years and now would have comfort,’ then remember you are trying to reward yourself, rather than receive the Father’s reward when the at-one-ment comes. If you say to yourself ‘have I not done my best and am I still not trying to do my best?’ then stop, think hard from within and analyze what you are trying to do your best. Is it to achieve physical attainment for yourself, and kin, or are you trying your best to glorify our Creator, our Father the One for whom He of Nazareth gave his all, but received the universe for his giving?

“In one of your recent God-given (not man) readings when I asked if my optimism regarding financial standing of Assoc. of National Investigators was warranted etc., etc., the answer was yes, so long as all concerned with the work have the rightful purpose in mind. Not in words but mind. (Or some similar answer.) Now the law of the Universal has told us this has not been fulfilled. For I must say now, due to absolute necessity our financial procedure must be changed. The budget cannot be sent to us just to be paid, for financial conditions necessitate a scheme of rigid economy even if necessary to let some employees go. Our monthly budget for the present will have to be maintained to around no more than approximately $3,000.

“Now you well know this can only be changed in one way. That is faith in Him who provides all. If help financially is secured by prostitution of the work to some outsider’s whims who may give for selfish motives, or by one not familiar with out ideal, the pillars will be brought down on our head. Your readings will change in character, and eventually there will be no readings. For surely, Edgar, your power is of God and cannot be given by man. Are we to moan or are we to turn our head upward and ask the Master for his aid to do his work, to abide in his will, not our will.

“Every penny that has been given by [900], [195] and myself has been in a spirit of love and accomplishment of His work. When the Cayce Hospital was but a sand hill the money given to build it meant sacrifice to us all, but it was a pleasure and so it will always be.

“But again in a reading we were told we must all fill our niche in the work. Together it would go on, alone it would fall. And here is the point, Edgar; unintentionally you have shut us all out of the work, you have not worked with us in developing of the program. You have not consulted with us in expenditure of funds, and have not worked in harmony with us in endeavoring to get the greatest good out of the service to be rendered mankind by your readings. Your readings are the power of God, the voice of Jesus; not of any one of us as we stand physically.

“Right here, Edgar, I would tear this letter up, but I am pushed on to write you more and mail it to you, knowing that one can thru a slip lose much spiritually although seeming to gain materially. So I must continue and I must send it to you.

“God bless you for, who am I to pass judgement? As He said, ‘whosoever amongst is without sin let him cast the first stone.’ So know, I am not casting stones or criticizing, I want merely to humbly help if I may.

“In another reading you said there was a promise, ‘Be thou faithful until I come and thy fondest wish will be fulfilled.’ In God’s name, Edgar, do be faithful, follow the hard but righteous path. Come to New York if you like and we will talk things over, but be faithful to thyself and Him.

“Our heads are up, our hearts are true, His will, not ours, will be done. Let us do our work as He would have it. The University will be built but only when we are prepared to make it His house, as the ideal makes it.

“Edgar, bear no hard feelings to us, for in God’s name we love you. Let me hear from you either by mail or personally. As ever, your friend,” [137]

R8. 6/16/30 [137]‘s letter to EC: “Enclosed find check for $1000, which I trust will take care of the immediate necessities, such as groceries until we get the books in shape here in New York.

“In order to open these books, will you please have Shroyer send to me here in the office the complete set of books, both of the hospital and the Association. This will include the ledger, cash books, check books, cancelled checks, and bank deposit books, and any other books pertaining to the ledger of both the hospital and the Association.

“During the time we have those books whatever entries are necessary at Virginia Beach can be held in memorandum form. We shall return the books just as quickly as possible.

“Judging from the report sent me, the Association has approximately $4000 in the bank. This, I believe, can be used towards current bills.

“Please impress upon Linden Shroyer and Mildred Davis the importance of their immediately sending these books, so as not to detain the payment of outstanding bills unnecessarily. I believe when this system is thoroughly inaugurated it will relieve a lot of pressure from the Virginia Beach end, and again a reason why prompt action is necessary.

“Nothing new here. We arrived home in good time to find the market worse than ever.

“Glad to have seen you all over the week-end.”

R9. 7/25/30 [137]‘s letter to EC: “My reason for sending you the telegram regarding the furniture, was that we received a wire from [257] suggesting a means, as he called it, of buying all the furniture. I surmised from his telegram that he referred to the furniture entirely rather than that as accepted. I wired [257] in return, telling him that under no condition would we buy more than $2,000 worth of furniture and that if he personally meant to buy any stock, we would be glad to buy it for him if he supplied the funds. There are so many things pressing now, that we are in no position to set aside any funds, for anything except paying back bills. [257]‘s suggestion of telling somebody else how to make the money rather than his helping us to make it, was most annoying to me. Not knowing what he had told you, I sent you the telegram, not wishing to bring up any old business that we completed at our meeting.

“I am telling you this so that you will have a full understanding of what my intention was, for [257] acts as though he is determined to force us with all that furniture, which you will agree under no condition can be done. When we are ready to buy more furniture, we will all get together and do our own shopping and not be told by [257] what is good value and what is not. Again I say, it was a badly executed suggestion by [257] that prompted the telegram, and I did not know what he had told you.

“[257] is very enthusiastic with our money and as you know his material suggestions have not apparently proven of great value. It might interest [257] to know that we have to date paid 11,000 worth of back bills and still find ourselves owing approximately 6,000 back bills not including the furniture. So you can see there are plenty of places to use any money without having [257] add on to the expense.

“I regret the inability to have the exact location of Mrs. [5627], but as I am reaching her through a third party, it has been a little difficult. However, I will send you a telegram as soon as possible advising of her exact location.

“Regarding kitchen supplies for the nurses home, I believe it would be well to have all meals eaten at the hospital and not employ any more help in the home. The present force in the hospital should be able to care for the nurses home and thus incur no additional expense. When the new building becomes crowded we can then take necessary action.

“I truly hope things are running more normally and that you find yourself in the best of health. Please give my regards to all and be assured I look forward to seeing you in the near future with the hope of again enjoying a friendly discussion and conversation regarding our various mutual interests.”

R10. 8/18/30 [137]‘s letter to EC: “The following is a paragraph from a letter received by me from [257]:

“With reference to the furniture situation Mrs. [189] arranged, as I understand it, that the hospital would only be responsible for about 2000 worth of furniture. The additional amount, whatever it was, Edgar requested that it be left there, and that he would, through certain people who were offering from time to time to do things for him, to have them pay for this amount. He, therefore, requested that the 1000 be charged to him. I believe Mrs. [189] arranged that. However, the hospital will only be responsible for the amount agreed upon.’

“I truly believe that if you entered into such an agreement with [257] you did so in good faith. However, I also believe that it is a very ill advised move.

“At the meeting of the Executive Committee, at which you and [257] were present, it was definitely decided what disposition should be made of the furniture proposition, and to all our understanding, the matter was closed, then purely by accident we find the decision is now to be entirely disregarded. You must realize that if funds of any nature are to be donated to the Association, we surely have a voice in whether or not they should be accepted, and if accepted, for which purpose they shall be used. If [257], for instance, did not agree to this, why should he be willing to expect 2000 as part payment from us, rather than have you raise the entire amount of the bill. His suggestion apparently does not cover 500, as he seems to plan to bill you for 1000 personally, and 2000 to the hospital, thus leaving $500 unaccounted for.

“In your letter to me I was under the full impression that all but 2000 worth of furniture was to be returned, and then later you stated, that [257] would take care of all above that amount. Now, [257] says, you will take care personally of 1000, so that after all our discussion and then our decision, I cannot help but feel that this is hardly a manifestation of the spirit of co-operation. If [257] has created this plan contrary to your knowledge, you must correct him at once. It appears to me the point is whether or not any Committee is to function, and if it is, surely decisions made cannot be disregarded, as apparently it was the intent to disregard the furniture decision.

“I can only repeat what was decided at the meeting, and that is, that all but $2000 worth of furniture must be returned, for truly that was the decision of the Board for the best good of all.

“If there is any reason that this should not be done, it is unbeknown to any of us, and feel that you should immediately take action, returning the furniture, or letting us know why not.

“I assure you it is most distressing to me to have to insist on a point of this kind; it is a financial, as well as a moral and ethical necessity. Let us not falter here and fail to work in harmony, for it has often been said: ‘It is the little things that count, as the big ones take care of themselves.’

“Mrs. [1725] now living at the corner of … Avenues, Deal, N.J., has asked me if you would not please give her a life reading, for which she applied something like a year ago. I believe it would be well, if you can see fit, to make an early appointment for her.

“It is unfortunate at the present time we do not see more of each other, for you know I surely and truthfully enjoy our visits. I look forward to seeing you at our next meeting, if not at an earlier time.

“My best regards to all.”

“P.S. I am sending a duplicate copy of this letter, as much as it pertains to him, to [257], so he will know the status of the affair.”

R11. 8/22/30 EC’s ltr. to Mr. [137]: “I have yours of the 18th. I wish it were possible for me to talk this matter over with you, rather than try to write it; for so often a written word is given a different construction from that intended.

“To be sure, I recognize the fact that I am responsible for all of the misunderstandings that have come up recently about many things, and about the furniture situation in the present; but it is certainly not my intention to disregard any action of any committee or executive board. I have acted in every case in what SEEMED to be, to ME, the only thing TO do under the existing circumstance; but I fully realize that the old saying, that the way to hell is paved with good intentions, is certainly true with me.

“Let me, just for a moment, review the situations leading up to the present conditions. I fully understand now, from both you and [900], that I exceeded my authority and had no right to go and order furniture. I was under the impression at the time that it was with the consent of you both. That, of course, is my first error. I was also under the impression that we had permission from you both to order furniture for the Doctor’s apartment in the hospital. That I understand I didn’t have, though I am quite sure that both of you told me that I did. That was my second error. Then, UNDER this situation, I went to see about getting the furniture. [257] told me at the time that he would prefer not to have anything to do with this order; that, if we were ordering it, then we could order what we wanted, but he would see that it would be arranged so we would have every advantage of every discount that could be had on the furniture. Consequently, the order was placed, as I understand, through individuals, heads of departments, in the employ of Federal [Furniture] or associated organizations, and was to be billed through them, or to them, through the Federal. At the time, the consideration of the changes from the hospital to the Home was taken into consideration. Now, when we had the executive meeting, it did not occur to me - under the stress of the situation - that what had been figured up as furnishing the house had NOT taken into consideration that shipped for the Doctor’s apartment. True enough, there were several pieces added for rooms that may not be taken care of for some time, but these were very little. So, all of the furniture that could possibly be sent back, as I felt, WAS returned - but that in the Doctor’s quarters, in the living room and both bedrooms, was NOT returned; neither would we have any furniture, if this WAS returned or had been - for two of the bedrooms and for the living room AT the Home. When I spoke to [257] about this, I asked him myself if they would bill this to me, and let me take care of it as soon as I could. He agreed that he would do this, and help me see that it was taken care of, and that I would not be bothered with same. At our last officers’ meeting, or trustees’ meeting, it was asked that every individual member of that Board contribute every five cents that they could. I thought and felt I was acting in the greatest of cooperation with that request, but it seems that I must consider it from a different viewpoint. If I have done wrong, I am sorry. I am sure it is well that the Board consider offers of contributions that may be made to the work of the Association, but am I not privileged to give whatever of myself - or whatever may be given me personally - as a contribution to the work that has meant my very life and soul? I am willing, and feel that I have put my very heart and soul into the work, but it seems that I have the wrong attitude. Where AM I lacking? It is NOT for self-glory, I am sure. Where am I small, or little? I know I WANT to do right. I WANT to cooperate with you and [900], and all the rest of the Board, for I feel that [900] has give the very best of himself, and I feel that you are doing exactly the same thing. I know that you are trying to make manifest an ideal. I do not THINK our ideals are different. Our CONCEPT of the Christ consciousness may be different, or our concept of what HE would do under the same circumstance may be different; but I try to live, and try to meet every circumstance, in that attitude that I believe HE would do under the same environ and same condition. Possibly I am very far wrong, but I haven’t MEANT to do wrong. I have assumed this obligation, and I do not see that I am in error in assuming this obligation, and if my friend, or my friends see fit to assist me when I assume an obligation, does that make it questionable to others, or to my God - if I do not err in the self that I give in exchange for that they may contribute? or may give me? or have I the wrong idea entirely? I am only trying to serve my fellow man in the best light that I have. I DO NOT THINK I have done wrong.

“I certainly do wish that we could talk conditions over more often. There are many things that come up that are hard to make decisions concerning, that will be in keeping with the ideas or ideals of a great group of people - even people who, I am sure, have as high an ideal as I ever dared have; yet not being in a position to consult WITH them, and having to act on the moment, we often find ourselves MISUNDERSTOOD.

“When are we to have the next meeting of the Board? There are several questions that should come before the Board, that I think should be considered rather prayerfully and rather seriously. There are questions concerning the conducting of departments and of many conditions at the hospital. There are things that I think we should discuss with the physician in charge. I am in hopes that it will be possible to have this sometime in the very near future.

“We are taking up the applications for the life readings just as fast as we possibly can. We are only able to get in one every few weeks. We will get Mrs. [1725]‘s just as soon as possible. It might be that we can get it sometime next week. We will communicate with her again, and get it in as soon as we can.

R12. 8/27/30 Mr. [137]‘s letter to EC: “You ask in your letter a very definite question, assuming deeds of wrongness in your own attitude. If you mean for me to answer that question, I am going to take the liberty of so doing. Without question, you have put your heart and soul into the work; but then you ask, where are you lacking? It is not for self-glory, where am I little or small, and say, ‘you want to cooperate with [900] and myself.’ That sentence of cooperation brings a real pang in my heart, because I believe you do want to cooperate. I believe everything you say is said in true sincerity and desire of Service, and the only answer to your question that I can see, or that I would write to you, rather than discuss personally, is that you have not permitted yourself to discriminate between the advice given by people to you, and when I say advice, I do not mean it in any childish manner, - I mean our discussion and council of friends. You have not allowed yourself to discriminate between those who truly have the interest of His work at heart, and those who have other interests, including their own personal gain at heart.

“We are all human, we are all far from perfect, we have much to gain, we have everything to be thankful for. Let us stop the feeling of any antagonism, any ill feeling, any lack of cooperation. Let’s get together now and all join in one cause, those that can’t, those that won’t, are simply deferring their present opportunity. Just one more word on this subject, and that is, whether you have done wrong regarding the furniture obligation, I think the wrong doing is only that you have made, and by this obligation are making the cross of [900] and myself that much harder to bear, and for that reason is not fair or right, any more than it would be right for you to use funds received by you for readings; or for membership dues, or for hospital patients, in any fashion of your own choosing, and not deposit every cent to the Association or Hospital account. We feel that no one man has the right to designate what contributions should be received, or what they should be used for, any more than, for example, you would have the right to use or appropriate as you see fit any funds received for readings, membership dues or hospital fees, regardless of any conditions or circumstances.

“We shall have to call the next meeting some time the early part of September, and if you agree, I believe it would be well to have the Doctor present at that meeting, as he must know that expenses in the hospital must be reduced. Where there is a will, there is a way, and we simply must find the way to reduce those expenses.

“There are many things [900] and I should like to discuss with you. They are for the good of the work, and for that reason, must interest you.”

R18. 4/5/37 Mr. [257]‘s letter: “[903] was invited by […] to a birthday dinner and out of all the city he chose St. Regis Hotel and at the next table [900], [137], both [3734] and husband and two Irish girls. [137]‘s being divorced by [140] at Reno, so [3734] has made Catholics of both [137] and [900], so […] writes me from Altoona, so you see your battle was Catholic Church vis Cayce - and they are on the down side. [900] looked terrible and [3734] was kitchen-maidish as usual. I’ll tell you fully when I see you. Remind me of the story. [900] was terribly depressed - [137] tried to be light-hearted. So you see they will pay and pay - until they make amends.”

R19. 3/29/39 Mr. [257]‘s letter to EC: “Today Mr. [137] sold his seat on the N.Y. Stock Exchange to […] That is his end.”

R20. 3/29/39 EC’s letter to Mr. [257]: “Am not surprised to hear anything about [137] & [900], but may the Lord have mercy on them. Am not meaning to judge, but at times feel they showed little mercy to me. God looks on the heart, though, and not on outward appearances. May He remember them, is my prayer.”

GD’s note: It was later learned that Mr. [137] retired to a small town and changed his name, apparently to avoid creditors opposing his filing for bankruptcy - chief creditors being his former wife [140] and her parents, Mr. [137] and his brother [900] lived in this small town with Mrs. [3734] and her husband and opened up a small greeting card business. Some years later Mrs. [3734] and her husband died, then Mr. [900]. Shortly after Mr. [900]‘s death, Mr. [137] remarried.
