This Psychic Reading given by Edgar Cayce at the office of the Association, Arctic Crescent, Virginia Beach, Va., this 31st day of January, 1942, in accordance with request made by the self - Mr. [2051], Associate Member of the Ass”n for Research & Enlightenment, Inc.

Born January 17, 1873, in Princess Anne County, Virginia. Time of Reading 3:30 to 4:20 P. M. Eastern Standard Time. …, Virginia.

1. GC: You will give the relation of this entity and the universe, and the universal forces; giving the conditions which are as personalities, latent and exhibited in the present life; also the former appearances in the earth plane; giving time, place and the name, and that in each life which built or retarded the development for the entity; giving the abilities of the present entity, that to which it may attain, and how. You will answer the questions, as I ask them:

2. EC: (In going back over years from the present - ” - ‘39 - changes in attitudes - ‘22 - anxieties and changes - ‘19 - ‘12 - yes - 1900 - expectancies and changes - ” etc., on back to birth date.)

3. Working for someone else as a contractor. 3. Or employment with the Government in the defense work, Naval Base. Please advise. (A) For the present, employment in the Naval Base. When this has changed, as it will, - contracting for the OWN activity. For, ye have a judgment of men, of conditions, of needs, that is well.

4. Yes, we have the records here of that entity now known as or called [2051].

5. In giving the interpretation of the records as we find them here, many various phases of the experiences of the entity through this sojourn, as well as the environs of others, may be chosen as the perspective of the purposes or uses to which the entity has put those things gained in the activities in the earth.

6. Many are the changes, and these have reasons or urges that have brought about much of this.

7. Then, these we choose to give; that this information may be a helpful experience for the entity, enabling the entity to better fulfil that purpose for which it entered this sojourn.

8. When a composite is drawn from the urges latent and manifested of those sojourns in the earth, as combined with latent and manifested urges from the experiences in the environs about the earth, - these we find as latent and characteristic urges in the present experience:

9. One that has high ideals.

10. One that finds environs changed, and many changes of environmental influences, in the experience.

11. One that is oft considered rather hardheaded or determined, and at times Puritanic in its judgment of others.

12. One that often is rather critical in judgments, in which there needs be that tempering of such judgments in that of “Judge not if ye would be not judged; for with what measure ye mete it shall be measured to you again.”

13. One that has those principles of the reform oft as basis of activities, in relationship to church and state; yet these are entirely separate, though they haven’t always been so in the experience of the entity.

14. As to the urges we would select, then, from those recorded here, - we find that these express themselves in varied manners.

15. Astrologically, or from the sojourns of the entity in the environs of the astrological aspects, we find these phases of influence in the experience of the entity:

16. From Jupiter we find the humanitarian interest.

17. Mercury and Mars bring the MENTAL abilities and the quick judgments, as well as a sense of humor that has oft been and will oft be the saving grace, in which many escapades of a nature have been a part of the experience and escaping at times only through the sense of the ability to see the ridiculous as well as the sublime. Hence that pronouncement, that there should be a tempering of the too-quick judgment of others.

18. In Neptune we find the construction, the building, as well as water, as well as law and order, all as parts of the experience in which the entity has had and may have force or power with others, or influence upon others. As has been the experience, and it is well to learn the lesson, it is not by might nor by power that one gains that worth retaining, but through love - and in the sowing of the seeds of the spirit there is brought those experiences that are growths in thine own self and are worth remembering.

19. For, know, - good alone lives on.

20. That of a nature which causes resentments, distrust, animosity, is already cut from that which is creative. It is true that it may have its place in the experience of others, but it is much like the nail driven in the post. The nail, the hindrance, may be removed, but the scar remaineth. It is weakened by the might or force.

21. Thus is there experienced by the entity that the creative force, or God, is not in the tempest nor in the storm, nor in the loud noise, nor even in the rumbles or rumors. But that which is helpful, the more oft, is in the still small voice within.

22. Astrologically, then, while we find these aspects influencing they are negligible in the experience at the present.

23. For, the entity is prone to be a leader or director, at times a politician, and at times one to act in the capacity as peacemaker, yet there is the constant change. And ALL are necessary. For, through experience is wisdom gained. Knowledge is power if there is the wisdom to apply it in the direction that brings the fruit of the spirit or the seed thereof. For, what the individual sows, that must it also reap.

24. Then, let that mind ever be in thee as ye have manifested oft in thy experiences in the earth.

25. As to the appearances, then, - these are chosen, not as all of them, but to indicate how those temperaments and characteristics have become as a part of the entity. For, what the entity is today is the RESULT of what it has been in days and experiences and ages and eons past. For, life is continuous; and whether it is manifested in materiality or in the realm of an individuality alone, it is one and the same. And it is brought into being that it might be one with its Maker.

26. Before this, then, the entity was in the land of the present nativity, but about those activities in Dearborn when there were the greater manifestations of purposes of the entity, - in association with that place which became, to some, rather notorious. Not as proprietor, yet associated with many of those who were active there.

27. Through the experience the entity’s activities were to aid others as a means for its OWN livelihood, as well as to act in the capacity of the advisor for those principles that were a part of that era or experience. As those activities were upset by the influences from others without, it became necessary for the removing from the land. Then the entity came into the lands of the present nativity.

28. Thus we find those tendencies of quick judgments, those tendencies for stressing law and order, as well as those tenets of beliefs in the present experience.

29. The name then was Franklin Gorman.

30. It may be said that the entity gained through the greater portion, and yet tempering of judgments is that which may bring greater harmony in the present experience. Forget not, in thine own vocabulary as it might be called, you will catch many more flies with sugar than with vinegar!

31. Before that the entity was in the Roman and the Promised Land.

32. There the entity was among the soldiery of the Roman land, but in authority in the Promised Land; thus becoming acquainted with the customs, for the entity was among the overseers of the collectors of revenue and of the taxes, as well as those who made inspection of garrisons in the land.

33. The entity in that experience was rather severe. And this comes as an innate urge finding expression at times in the present, making for what might be called a militant atmosphere in the activities of the entity. And yet these gradually became tempered with judgments, as there came more and more the understanding and the interpreting of the purpose of those influences that changed all the laws of that land, as well as those of other lands, through that period of activity.

34. The name then was Eulder, and in the garrison in old Antioch, - in associations then with the centurion there, as well as those in Jerusalem, and those in other portions of that land during that period.

35. These brought those abilities as a judgment of lands, soils, trees, crops. Yet the entity keeps close to and far from same in the present experience.

36. Before that the entity was in the Persian land, though the entity was among those of Indo-China - as would be known in the present, - in the name then Toia.

37. As the entity was brought into association with the organized group activity in the ‘city in the hills and the plains,’ it became more and more active in making application of those tenets and truths among its own peoples; thus dwelling in that land in which there was an abundance of material, as well as customs of peoples.

38. Hence in the present the entity is ever desirous of making money, but spends it as fast as it is made; for that which is to accrue to the benefit of many. This is judgment, if it is not carried too far.

39. This the entity finds also, - there are those that the entity has trusted in activities that have brought disappointments, that have meant much to the entity in determining courses to pursue.

40. Before that the entity was in the Egyptian land, during those periods of reconstruction; when there were the activities in which groups were given an active force according to the abilities in the varied lines, - through the activities in the Temple of Sacrifice and the Temple Beautiful.

41. There the entity was set as an individual to direct those in the construction of what the companion to the Priest set as the beginning of individual homes in that period.

42. Thus we find an innate and a manifested expression - the home, which to the entity is the most sacred of all of man’s accomplishments in the earth.

43. The name then was Shu-Eiber.

44. As to the abilities of the entity in the present, that to which it may attain, and how:

45. As has been indicated, many fields of activity are and have ever been open for the entity, to find not only outlets of the abilities but the means of expression that have brought, may bring, harmony in the experience of self.

46. Then, study to show thyself approved unto God, a workman not ashamed, rightly dividing the words of truth, judging in that manner of tolerance as ye would have thy Savior tolerant with thee.

47. In ANY of those channels that have been the outlet for the greater expressions, ye will find opportunities.

48. Opportunities are expressions of appreciation from thy Maker. Embrace them, - not for self but for the glory of thy Maker.

49. Ready for questions.

50. (Q) Considering home and church environment we have attempted to create for our children, why do so few take an active interest in the church? (A) Have ye practised as ye preached? Are ye to judge or thy Maker? Remember, God is the only appreciator of men’s attempt or try. Man - poor, miserable man - acts as judge.

51. (Q) What can I do to bring about a cooperative effort in the … Baptist church? (A) Just live that, practise that, which is according to the promptings of thy own conscience; not condemning any, but tolerant to all.

52. (Q) In order to meet the material needs, for which of the following am I best suited: 1. Contracting on my own.

53. (Q) Should we sell our present home site and build a smaller place nearby? (A) This will soon be a good period for such a sale.

54. (Q) Considering possibility of government taking over our property, please advise what part of the country we should go? (A) We do not find it as a policy of the Government to take over property in this particular area.

55. (Q) Why do I have difficulty in sleeping after four o’clock in the morning, and how may this be controlled? (A) This is as a habit, and a part of a physical reaction. This should not be attempted to be controlled, but rather USED advantageously. If ye are aroused, use the period of the first thirty minutes - at least - in direct meditation upon what thy Lord would have thee do that day. You’ll soon learn to sleep more than the next hour!

56. (Q) What have been the past associations with the following and what are the urges and how may I use them for our mutual development? First, my daughter, [1548]? (A) These have been in the experience before this; and, as may be seen from the paralleling in others, these have often been conflicting. And these should be drawn together closer by the finding of that wherein ye agree, NOT where ye disagree! Stress that as may be made cooperative. FORGET the differences.

57. (Q) My son, [4930]? (A) In the experience before this he gave you a good licking once, as ye have given him several this time! These are still innate things that must be worked out. Ye have come together for good. Don’t lose patience with yourself nor with thy son.

58. (Q) My wife, [1541]? (A) The greater association was in the experience before this, and then also in Palestine and in Egypt.

59. (Q) My daughter, [1523]? (A) In the experience before this, in Egypt, and in Persia.

60. (Q) Please suggest an affirmation to be helpful. (A) LORD, HERE AM I. USE THOU ME IN THAT WAY AND MANNER THAT I MAY BE A BETTER CHANNEL OF SERVICE TO THEE, AND FOR BRINGING GRACE AND MERCY TO THOSE I MEET DAY BY DAY.

R1. 2/17/42 Daughter [1523]‘s report: actual experience on the late evening of 2/17/42:

I went over home to give Papa his rub, and is always the case when I rub him we discuss some phase of reincarnation, the Bible, what it’s like in the environs between incarnations and their relationship one to the other.

Pop was feeling very tired, and down hearted about the war conditions, and said, “well, the Japs will be taking us over very soon, I don’t see much use of going on.”

I said, “Pop, you shouldn’t worry. You’ve chosen Jesus as your Master and guide, haven’t you? You’re living and doing the best you know how, aren’t you? Jesus has promised us that he will not forsake those that have chosen him. If we have chosen him, no matter where we are, we have nothing to worry about.”

Then Pop said, “then why bother giving me the rubs? Why not leave it up to Him?”

To which I answered, “that doesn’t mean that we should sit and hold our hands, but we are to use that we have, - do the things we know to do, and He will take care of the rest for us.”

I said, “Pop, some day when you pass on to another environment, you’ll remember all the things we’ve talked about, and you’ll say to yourself - [1523] was right, I should have listened to her, and I wouldn’t have worried so much.”

Our talks always lift him up in spirit; when I left - he was relaxed and joking.

R2. 2/17/42 See 294-196 EC’s dream between 11:30-12:30 same night regarding Mr. [2051] building a house in heaven.

R4. 2/16/52 Mr. [2051]‘s report to his daughter, [1523], on the changes which had occurred in his life:

“When I was 19 years old I lived out doors all winter cutting wood - bought my freedom from my Dad - paid him 200 - that was the custom then. I was supervising 2 sawmills - '96 - '98 - cutting timber for 25 per month - cooked for myself and 10-15 colored fellows. Bought one sawmill ‘98-1902; bought farm 1903 - put in grist mill, sold hay and ran general store; continued sawmill work through 1907; ‘23 was in used furniture business until ‘27; in business with my brother who had some experience in this field - went broke - had to take bankruptcy - kept track of everyone I owed and paid them back; this took a terrible toll - felt ashamed - worried - became an extremist about paying cash for every thing, not writing any checks. I kept my old bills for years. When in the used car business ‘34 - ‘35 - in with a slicker - that got out of hand - had to close down. Went into building of small homes, contracting for them. I built many homes around … and vicinity. Discontinued this when second World War came along. Worked in … during the war - for the first time got clear of debt. Set up real estate activities, buying land here and there and selling it at a price later - also set up rentals - repairing homes and then renting them. [Mrs. [1523]‘s note: “At one time Pop owned about half of …, Va. It was mostly farm and pasture land then, and in 1918 after the road was put through from … (concrete road) he began to sell off a piece of land here and there. The property, over a period of years, has increased so in value that he has made some very excellent gains. He has an exceptionally fine business head and can foresee opportunities beyond the average person.”]

“I certainly do consider that I have high ideals. If I wasn’t hard-headed and determined I wouldn’t ever have made it. Yes, I’m critical.

“If anybody treats me wrong I don’t care to have anything more to do with them. I started taking interest in politics long before I was married. I have always gone to church and think everyone should do the same - every Sunday. I enjoy making friends and like to help my neighbors or anyone in trouble. ‘Quick judgements’? Yes, that’s right. Never went past the third grade in school but I can outfigure and figure faster than my sons who had four years of college. I was an active member of a group called the ‘Purity Squad’ appointed by the judge of the county for the purpose of breaking up whiskey stills during prohibition; kept this up about three years. When this condition first came up we went to the minister and he told us to go to it. We then went to the judge who appointed various groups of which some of my church members became a part. Due to violence - barn burned - getting shot at in my own home - my brother being killed - we gave up the purity squad activities.”

R5. 1/3/56 Daughter [1523]‘s report on his Life Reading:

“He is always getting his mail ‘[2051] F… the initial F.’ This is interesting in view of the fact that his first name in the Dearborn period was Franklin.”

Beginning with pg. 2, 2nd parg. thru 6th - These statements are so true - and the characteristics have become more pronounced as the years go by. In fact they are so accurate that even my dad admits them.

Re. influences from Neptune specifically concerned with “Law and order” - one of the most outstanding things about dad - as far back as I can remember - his word was law - at home and in many other areas. If he called to any of us from another room - we were expected to come into his presence immediately - if he spoke - we moved - or he would resort to the “rod”. If two of us were “cutting up” or “misbehaving” - he asked no questions, and no matter who might have been at fault - both were punished. Mother [1541] would cover up for us - probably being twice as easy on us - because Pop was so exacting.

One of the most interesting things - which probably comes from his Dearborn period - is his feeling about “checking” up on people. He thinks nothing of snooping around - peeping in windows - coming up on people - catching them unawares. Strangely enough he never feels that he’s doing anything that isn’t quite in order - and nothing can seem to change his feeling about this being quite right for him to do.

Generally speaking - one of the most outstanding virtues - is his desire, willingness, and actual helping others. This he has often done when perhaps it would have been better to let them stand on their own feet. Often he has been taken advantage of - as was the case when he was in the used furniture business and the 2nd-hand auto business [see his report on himself - 2/16/52]. He has kept his sense of humor and I believe it has been on the increase as he has grown older - likewise his tendency for quick judgements remains.

Both he and mother have been great church-goers - and by the very “forcing” of others (their children primarily) to go, - much of a rebellion was brought about - As we were growing up we were not allowed to play games of any kind on Sunday, and liquor, cards and dancing were considered in the same category with cussing.

There seems to be an interesting parallel between his experience as a tax collector - and the manner in which he collects (or his attitude towards it) rents now. While he only has a few rentals - some negro - some white - he expects that it should be paid at the exact date due. When it is not

• he frets, fumes and questions. On the other hand - if the tenant comes and says he cannot pay then - but will pay later
• he is very understanding. In many cases he has helped his tenants - both colored and white - to handle their money properly - helping them to buy on time their homes and furniture - when they would not seem to know how to set it up. His ability to size up lands, soils - crops - trees - is most outstanding. He can “step-off” a wooded area and tell you how much timber you can cut off of it. He has a natural instinct for property values throughout this area - and also the ability to spot business opportunity - through buying land and making it pay. He loves to have some sort of business project going at all times - and nothing delights him more than to have his money drawing interest - just small amounts - but with something always loaned, - to individuals, so that he feels that he is helping them as well as himself. He is never without a garden - and yard work - often doing work around the village for others - since he retired from business.

Each year he says he will not put out a garden - but with the coming spring - the urge becomes so strong that he grows a large garden, and then goes about giving it to the neighbors. There is always the urge to grow the largest vegetable - and to have it come forth sooner than others who are also growing a garden.

As pointed out in the Indo-China incarnation - his mind is most often turned to “ways” of making money, but the spending is done with greater caution as he grows older. He will economize on small details - but loan out large sums with a feeling of satisfaction. It is quite true that he has been disappointed numbers of times with those he has trusted - money-wise, in particular - and this has changed his activities into another course with each disappointment.

His building of small homes - which is indicated as a talent from the Egyptian period - came into influence about the same time as he came to know Mr. Cayce - or perhaps a few years earlier. In fact it was he that built the office addition to the Cayce home on 14th Street - in 1939 and 1940. Recently with the building of my new home - he has taken such interest and pride - that you would have thought it was his own.

With regard to Q-3. Dad worked at the … Air Station as night watchman for nearly a year. He enjoyed it very much - tells interesting stories in connection with his experience there. His ability to remember and relate true events is remarkable. Often people come to him to trace out who owned certain tracts of land - long ago, when records were not carefully kept. His interest in court procedures - politics, etc. is most outstanding. He has kept an “in” with the “powers that be” in the county as far back as I can remember, and is called on to serve on jury duty - helping to get votes

• putting out voting booths - etc. until the present time. All of this keeps him in touch with what goes on in the county and keeps his interest and wits sharpened.

Mother and Dad go to church every time the doors are opened. Both take a most active part, and are not a little disturbed because their children do not attend as they do.

Dad never did go back in to contracting - that is building small houses. They did not sell their home nor build another

• though they still talk about building a smaller home. The government has not - so far - taken over the … property east of the railroad track - though they took much property south of the railroad track.

Dad tried saying his prayers when awakened early in the morning (see Q-6) - and he said it really worked.

Re. Q-7. My sister [1548] never had a life reading, so there was not the opportunity to parallel their past experiences. That they have much conflict now is very apparent. They do not seem to be able to adjust very well to each other - but on the other hand they are often doing things for each other. So far Dad’s service has been far and above that received - from her in this incarnation.

Re. Q-8. As far back as I can remember - dad was more severe on [4930] than any of the rest of us. That could be because we were both nearer the same age, and I knew more about it, but I remember one instance in particular; we were both very young, - I don’t recall what my brother [4930] had done - but my dad gave him a whipping that was most severe. I remember sympathizing with my brother after it was all over - trying to passify him and I am reminded of the different relationships of the three of us in that period. Dad’s reading and mine - the check life on the Dearborn period - gives quite an interesting picture in light of reincarnation. My brother grew up to be very rebellious about my dad - and it is only since they both grown older that any tolerance has come into their relationships.

All in all, I do not know of anyone whose life reading is any more accurate than my Dad’s. I have thought many times - with the way he followed his physical readings, and with such success - if his education had only been such that he could have better understood his life reading - that it would really have been a great help to him.

I have spent many hours with both Mother and Dad - suggesting “truths” given in the readings - generally, and it has helped one and all to have a more tolerant and more helpful association - one with another.

R6. 1/30/57 Note by [1523]: There are undoubtedly further comments by way of report on [2051] that I will add - that did not occur to me when I wrote up this report. One in particular came to mind just the other day.

This would be a report on one of the talents reflected from the Persian period - or the time of Uhjltd. Pop’s interest in dress - his ability to select dresses for Mom that are becoming to her - would seem entirely out of character with his background in the present incarnation. Many times I have brought home dresses for mother - and his enthusiasm about the dresses - his good judgement on the style and proper fit is always surprising. On the last occasion when we were trying dresses on mother - he suggested that it be altered here - there - and the time before that I brought home a dress that didn’t become her - and he was the first to spot the detail that made the dress unbecoming.

Some three or four years ago - I had on a dress that was a chinise print - one with a flowing (or loose) back - and a dress that I would never have thought of him liking. I was amazed when he said to me “that’s a beautiful dress”. This ability which undoubtedly comes from the Uhjltd period - is totally out of character with his present experience in this incarnation - which has been primarily one of “frontier” living.
