This psychic reading given by Edgar Cayce at his home on Arctic Crescent, Va. Beach, Va., this 8th day of August, 1932, in accordance with request made by his father, Dr. [539], Active Member of the Ass”n for Research & Enlightenment, Inc.
[Edgar Cayce; Gertrude Cayce, Conductor; Gladys Davis, Steno. Mildred Davis.]
Time of Reading 3:40 P. M. Eastern Standard Time. …, Illinois. (Physical Suggestion)
-
EC: Yes, we have the body here, [2155]. Now, as we find, in many respects the conditions that have been and are disturbing in the physical forces of the body are improved. We find those repressions that make for the disturbing of the mental and physical coordination in the equilibrium of the body show some improvement. There is greater mental reaction towards normalcy. Not that the body is near normal, or that the disturbing factors have been entirely eliminated, or even quieted, but the general attitude, the general aptitude of the body is bettered.
-
We would keep those applications that are being made for the body, in the magnetic forces and also the vibrations from the Radio-Active Appliance. Also we would keep those attempts at quietness, perseverance, consistency, in the activities of others, as well as trying to arouse the same within the active forces of the body.
-
There are those impactions in the caecum, and the area of the appendicial region, that form those reactions which make pressures - also with the lyden and genitive glands in the system. It would be most helpful to keep rather that tendency for a full, complete reaction of the alimentary canal in its eliminations.
-
These others we would keep in the manner that has been outlined.
-
Do not give up. Do not lose patience with self, nor with the activities of the body itself.
-
Ready for questions.
-
(Q) What lies behind the impulse to break glass, only to have this followed by a restlessness for having it repaired? (A) The subconscious forces that tend to make for activities through impulses carried over from other experiences. These are hardships upon others, yet are of that nature that shows - if these can be, will be, turned into CONSTRUCTIVE intents and purpose, through patience, persistence - these will make for that enabling the healing to be brought for the disorders in system.
-
(Q) What advice does the Intelligence of Undifferentiated Spirit give in order that the normal may be established? (A) As given, keep that which has been outlined. The vibrations in system created by the action of the magnetic forces on the system, in the manner outlined - as well as keeping the alimentary canal more active in this particular area. As we find, one of the best things that may be used for this particular condition is that found in the formula called Castoria, which carries the least of the habit-forming and more of the principles that work with a general system. When given, give very small quantities often. Half a teaspoonful given every half an hour is better than the whole of a half ounce, or ounce, given in two to three doses.
-
(Q) Is placing him back into the institution advisable or not? (State Hospital at Bartonville, Ill., about … miles from home) (A) These conditions in the surroundings, to be sure, work many hardships upon those who are to deal with the situations as they arise. We would at least not alter, in the present, in the attempt to bring about those corrections that will be PERMANENT to the whole of the ENTITY’S being; for while in the institution care and attention of an unusual nature is given, these conditions CANNOT be met as well there as by those who are responsible for the advent of the entity into this experience. Be patient. Be kind. Be long suffering. Faint not in well doing, for with every trial and tribulation there is also prepared a way of escape. In Him IS life, light, and understanding. Be faithful to the trust that has been put into thine keeping; not as a burden, but that self and self’s abilities are spent in redeeming a soul from that environ of itself’s own undoing, that will make for the resuscitation of life in a way and manner that will not only bring joy, happiness, harmony, peace to the body itself, but to those that overcome.
-
(Q) What can we do to perfect ourselves against the inharmony, worry and confusion that exists usually under these conditions? (A) Trust more and more in HIS love, His power, that is manifest in thine ministry through HIM to KNOW the way that He would have thee go.
-
We are through for the present.

Reports & Follow-up
R1. 8/9/32 EC’s letter to Dr. [539]:
“Yours of the 28th, 2nd and 3rd, certainly should have been answered before now. I told Mrs. [2110] that I was writing, but some people came in unexpectedly, which required some days of our attention - with the readings - and we didn’t get to it.
“To be sure, it is always satisfactory to feel that our efforts are helpful and encouraging to those we would assist. I am enclosing the information which was gotten yesterday afternoon for [2155]. I do hope this will assist you and Mrs. [2110] in some way, and be encouraging to you in carrying on. That you have seen and feel there are the manifestations of an awakening in him seems to me to bespeak something to hope for. I feel that ultimately it may be enlarged upon, and through Him overcome that which would hinder.
“Regarding the Gold Chloride, this I am sure you will be able to obtain at any drug store. You only have to call for 15 grains Chloride of Gold. You then put this in 15 ounces of distilled water and keep it as a solution to use in the battery connection. I haven’t any more on hand now, as the young man who has been handling this department of the work has moved to Kentucky [Gray Salter]. I would refer you to him, that you might be sure to get the proper balance, but I happen to know that he is now on a vacation and possibly will not be back for two weeks.
“I realize, Doctor, that one finite mind may not know it all. We have had a contact by correspondence with a Dr. Prouty, [N. H. Prouty, M.D.? - magnetic healer - See his letter of 7/31/32 under 2155-2 Reports] who has been using the magnetic treatments for some time. From his reports, it seems he has done some very wonderful things. This type of treatment has been suggested through the readings for certain conditions since the very first, but I do not know whether or not these suggestions have been exactly in line with Dr. Prouty’s practices. It is very hard to gather the proper concept of the working of a man’s mind by correspondence. However, I have gathered from his letters that he considers the magnetic treatments more mechanical than the readings have indicated. Hence, he is possibly not as spiritual minded as the readings intimate an individual should be who applies such treatments. However, I may be doing the man an injustice by saying such a thing. In one of my letters to him sometime ago I mentioned [2155]. For your consideration I am enclosing the answer I received from him. If you care to get in touch with him direct, why I will leave that to your own judgement. I do not feel it would be interfering with anything we are trying to do, unless - as I said - it would lead to our getting away from the spiritual angle instead of purely material. My whole idea is to do whatever is necessary, that may assist you and Mrs. [2110] in doing the best thing for [2155].
“Thank you very much for your criticism and suggestions regarding the lesson. If it were possible for us to be more closely associated in our daily work, I am sure we could find a great deal in common. I am hoping that some day - possibly in the near future - this may be. In fact, as you know, I once had a hospital here. Misunderstandings arose between those who were the financial backers of the institution, and it was closed. However, there is a man here - a Jew - who is the owner of a hotel and much property around Virginia Beach. He is a man who sought a long ways for health. He has been - and is still in the tanning or furrier business; but Virginia Beach appeals to him as a health resort. [Jacob Laskin] He was aided through psycho-therapy, and has recently installed a very nice place in connection with his hotel - but of course the treatment rooms being entirely separate from the hotel proper. He has not been able as yet to contact the proper one to take charge or to supervise this work. What he needs is a director of the medical department of it. With the prospects for the development in this place, I believe it would offer a real opportunity for someone with a vision, and one who isn’t bound too closely by what I believe is termed ‘ethics’. This may be an awful suggestion to make to a man who has given his whole life’s work in one place. Maybe it would appeal to you - maybe it would not. I merely offer it as a suggestion for your consideration. Such a wonderful place might be established here, under the supervision of one who would care to cooperate with the readings and association between the people who come here for treatments or suggestions from time to time. It would prove quite helpful to all concerned.
“Yes, I realize that the lessons are at times possibly too elementary. Again there may be something that is rather far advanced; but the very basis of it all, I think, is fundamentally good - and if that is true, then the proper structure may be builded on it. I hope that from time to time you will offer any suggestions you may have regarding any of the information that might be presented in the lessons or readings; for it is my sincere desire not to ever become so self-centered as to warp the real truth which may be presented. It is there, I am sure, if we may interpret it aright. As Peter said, ‘Thou alone hast the words of life. To whom could we go?’ We realize that we can do nothing of ourselves, yet the material world - with so many of its advanced sciences (as called) - tends to awaken the consciousness in man that he may be all sufficient. This separation of what others call Oneness becomes apparent, and usually brings dissension. The ideal in Cooperation is to awaken that consciousness that no man may attain his best through his own efforts alone.
“Healing, in whatever form it may be, must be of self as the other is healed, yet it takes something from self to make a union with the consciousness of the individual attempting to be helped, with the consciousness of the Creative Forces - God, or whatever it may be represented by, whether a dose of calomel or a prayer; for He made it all.
“Familiarizing ourselves with the will of God is indeed finding the essence of truth itself, for it is constructive - it does build, and does not tear down - save as it supplies the necessary elements in the evolution from the physical standpoint, which is a continuation of the spiritual elements that run throughout. Discussions are well if, even in these, we are constructive in expressing that experienced by the other individual. Consequently, while I may not be very much of a debater, I do invite discussion of any and all phases of that which may be expressed through the lessons. I either believe the information for the moment and for the individual, or I could not conscientiously allow myself to even be the channel for its expression to my fellow man. I feel though, Doctor, very humble at all times; for I realize that of and in myself I am nothing. As we are enjoined by one of the writers of the Holy Writ, ‘Try ye the spirits, and if there be any good - if there be anything of good report, think on it.’ That’s what I’m trying to do.
“I believe practically all your questions were answered in [2155]‘s reading. This has been one of the outstanding features of these readings. Two sides will be presented to practically every condition or question. Decisions will not be made for individuals, though suggestions will be made as to the better course to pursue - leaving the action of the will to the individual, or those responsible for the application of whatever element may be necessary for the aid physically, mentally, spiritually, or what not. This must to some seem that there is always a doubt left, but this fact seems apparent to me: Men and women of all ages have gradually gotten away from one of the keynotes of the teachings of the Master - ‘The kingdom of heaven is within you!’ and no one can separate us from the kingdom but ourselves!
“I hope I haven’t been too long, or that I do not appear undecided or indefinite as to what your attitude should be. There must be, if I understand correctly, a seeking ourselves
- and He answers direct; for God is the same yesterday, today and forever, and His promises today are much as the lessons we may learn from his people of old. We may not see with our own little minds how it is possible, yet He thought it not delaying to fulfil His promises four or five hundred years after they were made. Preparations had to be made, and no doubt individuals themselves had to be raised up to enjoy those very promises. With our spiritual eye and sense we will find ourselves content, in whatsoever channel He has seen fit for us to serve; yet we will become more and more a channel of blessings to others, thus developing our own souls to receive in our physical bodies those promises He has made to man.
“Hoping to have been of service, and with love and regards to you and Mrs. [2110], I am” Sincerely, Edgar Cayce
R2. 8/18/32 Father’s letter: “The reading of [2155] that you gave August the 8th with the answers to my question is proving very helpful. There is a tendency to quit [quiet?] - insidious in that it carries with it a tendency for self-pity, martyrdom and silent acceptance of defeat. Your help is certainly good medicine.”
R3. 8/30/32 [2155]‘s mother obtained her Life Reading - See 2110-1.
R4. 9/5/32 Father’s letter to EC:
“Now as to [2155]. We thank you of course for every bit of encouragement and help. We endeavor to cooperate with the work of your group and the directions for the use of the radio-active appliance, and manipulating activity of the spine in every way. Of course we find that frequently the flesh is weak. We don’t always awake at the specified time for conscious concentration and meditation, especially is this the case if we have lost sleep during the night. Your time of 6:30 A.M. means 5:30 A.M. here.
“I have found that the application of the radio-active appliance to [2155] seems to become associated with an increased irritableness on his part. Of course this may be a mistake on my part. Last week for instance I had used it very regular and towards the last of the week he showed a condition of several major attacks during the day, with cramps, and slight confusion in his speech. We have at such times given him medicines to make it more bearable for him. In fact he asks for it. I don’t know that we have ever told you about this, and I would appreciate if you could tell me just what you get as an answer to this question.
“We are all looking forward with happy anticipations for meeting you within the near future. Before closing I would like to have you tell me an outline of just what the best way will be for our mutual cooperation in connection with such patients for which I would write for help. For instance, do you deem it essential that they be told about it, and give their willing cooperation? Anything else that suggests itself to your mind as being helpful to me in this respect I would be glad to receive from you.
“I am happy to send you regards from Mrs. [2110] and the rest of the family.”
Sincerely, [539]
R5. 9/16/32 Father’s letter to EC:
“I am returning Dr. Prouty’s letter [7/31/32 - See under 2155-2 Reports] and also a copy of my reply to him. I think he is just fine; he has the right spirit.
“[2155] has been much better since last Saturday. Yesterday he surprised us by repeating a little verse that is hanging in a frame on the wall in my office. It is the first time to my knowledge that he has succeeded in controlling his attention and thought to that extent for a long time. He required just a little help, mostly in the line of patience on one’s own part, but he succeeded in going through it all. It was this:
To wish and to work for wishes, I would not be denied. For what would there be to live for if our wants were all supplied. So be yours great and generous, and ere they all come true, May you have new and better one, With a will to push them through.
“I don’t know just how to thank you for your help. You surely are a channel of blessings.”
[He also requested a Life Rdg. for himself - See 539-2, 10/2/32.]
R6. 9/16/32 Dr. [539]‘s letter to Dr. Prouty:
“I have before me the nice letter you sent to our mutual friend, Mr. Edgar Cayce. [7/31/32 letter - See under 2155-2 Reports.]
“I have had the letter quite a while and have read it many times. It makes one feel good when one discovers those finer impulses in our fellow being. The impulses that make for cooperation, reconstruction and progress. I wish to thank you very much.
“I am also going to give you some of the data which you are asking for as well as a short description of the history before and since we have had the benefit of Mr. Cayce’s genius personality and cooperation.
“[2155] was born March 7th, 1909. He came in a breech presentation and being the first born, had a rather protracted time of it. He had the first observed convulsion when about four months old. He had without doubt considerable pain at times, indicated by a restless disposition, crying, etc. We attempted to have him get an education at the Public Schools, but had to give this up on account of his inability to adjust himself to other children and the uncertainty of his keeping sufficient hold on himself to maintain consciousness and a semblance of self control. Well, it would make a long story, in fact, too long to go into all the details. A few things however, are outstanding: Mayo’s Clinic, where a very searching examination was made, lent nothing to offer definite help, except that some trauma at birth, probably a small cerebral hemorrhage, had interfered with the proper interaction between the upper and lower neurons in the cerebro-spinal nervous system.
“I might digress here and mention that in the Reading given by Mr. Cayce, some such a situation is given as the physical cause, but inasmuch as mental and spiritual causes were indicated, I found in Mr. Cayce’s co-operation more enlightenment than I have had before. But this is not all. The directions that we received for helping this situation have certainly proven themselves to be sound and productive of ‘good fruit’. [2155] shows a better appearance; he smiles oftener. His conduct is better. He shows an awakening for co-operation, some sort of an idealistic aim. He has been free at short intervals from convulsions and the very painful cramps, which are extremely hard on him. His parents feel better. They feel they have reasons for being thankful and grateful for thus becoming witnesses to the life and health-giving Truth.
“It will give me great pleasure to let you hear from time to time as to the progress we are making, and maybe I shall have the pleasure of meeting you personally one of these days.
“Mrs. [2110] joins me in thanking you for your kind interest and helpful suggestions. With kindest regards, I am,”
Very truly yours, Dr. [539]
R7. 10/13/32 Father’s letter to EC:
“While [2155] shows improvement, such improvement is not so much in evidence as in our desire. I don’t think that we are impatient; on the contrary there is a possibility of our becoming sort of reconciled to conditions too much, instead of taking the stand that the situation is abnormal and to be corrected. What have you?
“I thank you for your cooperation. In another letter, I’ll go over my Life Reading [539-2].”
R8. 10/21/32 Father obtained a physical reading for himself - See 539-3.
R9. 11/10/32 Father’s letter to EC:
“Tempers … (?). Somehow I do not wish to have too much time elapse between the exchange of our ideas by letters. You are telling me that you are enjoying my correspondence. Now let me inform you that seeing the Virginia Post mark on any of my daily mail always gives me a thrill of joy and gladness.
“I know that you are interested to hear about [2155]. It is perhaps difficult to see the changes and improvements when one is in constant touch with a situation. [2155] had a number of falls last week. He also complained considerable of pain in his right leg.
“[2155] reacted so unpleasantly to the battery treatment that Mrs. [2110] thought it best to discontinue it for the time being. What is your advice in this respect? He is sort of restless and squeally. On the other hand I feel personally more faith and perhaps have a little more understanding. After all only God can come to us or go from us.
“I know you are busy and your typists must keep their fingers active. Thanks for any news from you. How about it - Can we soon say - I’ll be seeing you?” Yours in the Spirit, [539]
R10. 11/15/32 EC’s letter to [539]:
“Yours of the 10th came while I was away. I had been hoping and looking forward with much pleasure to seeing you on this trip, but I was so very busy meeting my friends and acquaintances the few days while in New York, and necessity demanded that I return at once before my friends there had time to make the trip west they had expected to do. Whether this may be arranged now before the first of the year, I don’t know. I hope so, for I am still looking forward to knowing you and your family in person.
“Yes, when I get out and meet others I realize what it means for each individual to learn to meet their own problems. Just to have a beautiful theory that meets our own individual needs doesn’t mean that others looking through their eyes, feeling through their builded development, are going to react or respond to it in the same way. If we can give something very practical, that does enable us to find Him with us now, then we will come to the realization He is One and we are His, if we will but put ourselves in the position where He may lead and we not try to tell Him how to do it.
“I am really disappointed in not getting to see you on this trip, for I had expected to be in Chicago today. Necessity demanded that I come back here at present. Just when I will be able to get away again I don’t know. As I said before, I have to depend on the good graces of others foremost of my material movements. When the spirit moves them, fine! ‘Not my will but Thine be done!’
“I feel I can let the information itself answer about the battery, better than I can from the material mind. This I hope we can do in the very near future. Mrs. [2110] was quite right, I think, in leaving off the battery for the present.
“Let us hear from you whenever you have time. You know we are always very anxious to hear how everyone is responding to the work we are trying to do. We feel so helpless ourselves, and know that unless we are doing a service in His name it cannot be of much use. If we are leading others into His presence, or to recognize His presence in them, we feel that everything must be for the best.
“All send our regards and love.”
Sincerely, Edgar Cayce
