This psychic reading given by Edgar Cayce at his home in Pinewood on Lake Drive, Va. Beach, Va., this 10th day of May, 1934, in accordance with request made by his father, Dr. [539], Associate Member of the Ass”n for Research & Enlightenment, Inc.
[Edgar Cayce; Gertrude Cayce, Conductor; Gladys Davis, Steno. Mildred Davis, Hugh Lynn Cayce.]
Time of Reading 10:45 A. M. Eastern Standard Time. …, Illinois. (Physical Suggestion)
-
EC: Yes, we have the body here, [2155] and those conditions as disturb the normalcy of this body. These we have had before. There are some changes in the general physical conditions from that as we had before. In outward appearance at times there appears to be more unrest, more uneasiness to the body, and at others more normal or more docility as to the general physical reactions.
-
As we would find, there are the changes for the betterment of the physical conditions, are these but taken advantage of in the present situations.
-
As has been seen, or is seen, these are the causes - and these are the conditions in the present.
-
With the percussions in the dorsal and cervical area, and the application of those vibrations that are accentuating, or making for an impulse in the cerebro-spinal and sympathetic system, enlivened by the change produced by the atomic forces of the metal, there is carried into the system more susceptibility in brain or nerve reaction as from impulse. These conditions are, naturally, those that make for a seeming unrest at times, more incoordination in the reactions or impulses, and the more severity in the body in its activity, yet when these ARE quieted there is more response to suggestion, more response to being guided, led, or - RECEIVING, as it were, that of suggestion in its impulse.
-
Now, as we find, one of the main disorders arises from those forces or impulses in those areas from which there appears at times the infectious forces, through the lack of proper eliminations in the alimentary canal.
-
Now, we would NOT change those vibrations either of the percussion or the manner, or the places and centers through which, or at which, the anodes of the appliance are to be made. That is, that anode carrying the vibrations of Gold solution should be attached to the 1st, 2nd or 3rd cervical vertebrae, or plexus - that is, between the 1st and 2nd, or 2nd and 3rd, cervical center. THEN attach the plain anode, or last, or which is the positive then, to the 3rd and 4th center in the dorsal area. This we would keep for at least thirty to sixty minutes each day.
-
We would also, at a given or set period, CHANGE now the magnetic vibration from the physical body, as would make for the change in vibrations in the physical forces of the body itself. Place the right hand over the 11th, 12th dorsal, or the 1st lumbar and 12th dorsal area, and the left hand over the caecum and the ascending colon area. This to be given for at least twenty to forty-five minutes, however long a period this may be obtained to this length of time - see? These, as we find, continued in these manners, will reduce these tendencies for excitement, and reduce the numbers of the congestions that make for the incoordination, that produces the convulsive forces in body. Do not use these magnetic treatments now on neck and head; rather on the body, torso. Right hand 1st lumbar, 12th dorsal; left hand caecum and ascending colon area. This will cover those portions where the lacteals show for their assimilations, and make for better eliminations.
-
Do that. Ready for questions.
-
(Q) What causes pain in left leg? (A) The changing in the vibrations makes for pressure on various portions of the system, and it will be found that these will be in leg, arm, or various portions of the body, as will be the complaint. We have, as is seen, STIRRED UP the reflexes and impulses. Now we need to keep them, or get them coordinating in their proper relation one to another.
-
(Q) What causes dizziness? (A) From the same reason, where the impulses or nerve impulse along sympathetic AND cerebro-spinal tend to make for the unbalancing. Now, as we find, with these changes, we will come to a more normal.
-
(Q) Are the percussions being given properly? (A) As we said, we would keep those that have been given, save changing in the magnetic treatments; for the action of the Radio-Active forces and the magnetic are of the same character or nature, that without the contact nothing apparently appears. With the contact the effect is created in impulse centers in the cerebro-spinal and, especially, sympathetic system. Hence is active in the organs of the torso by the variation of the positive or the negative forces of the body to the centers from which the organ, or portion of system, receives its impulse from the ganglia of the cerebro-spinal or sympathetic system.
Do as we have outlined for the present.
- We are through.

Reports & Follow-up
R1. 5/16/32 Father’s letter to EC:
“Just a few lines to acknowledge receipt of my own reading, the second reading and the new treatment instructions for [2155].
“We all appreciate your help so very much. The last report I made to you about [2155] was May 3, 1932. He suffered considerable pain with the crampy contractions in his right thigh from May 3rd to 7th. He stayed in bed 2 days, which is an unusual experience. He has had a number of epileptic convulsions.
“Yesterday and today he complains of crampy sensations, and is lying down on a day bed. He refused an invitation to go for a ride yesterday, which is also a rare occurrence.
“But on the other hand there is a different atmosphere about him. He co-operates nicely with the battery treatment during his sleep. I gave it to him last night from 2 A.M. to 3 A.M; the night before from 5 A.M. until 6 A.M.
“We, as a family have lived up to the invitation to meditate at the two definite periods - 6 A.M. to 6:15 A.M. Central Standard Time, and 10:30 A.M. to 11 A.M. When I say family I have reference to Mrs. [2110] and myself. Our two children, those besides [2155], have not joined as yet. Meditations of that sort have to be grown into gradually. No doubt, but what they will help us along in the near future.
“Before leaving this subject, I feel it appropriate to express my opinion of the formula which is to be used as the root idea during these meditative periods. I am very enthusiastic about it because it is so common sense, practical and inclusive.
“I am reminded by it of some of the following passages in the 35th Psalm:
- Draw out also the spear, and stop THE WAY against them that persecute me: say unto my soul, I am thy salvation.
- Stir up thyself, and awake to my judgement, even unto my cause, my God and my Lord.
- Judge me O Lord my God, according to thy righteousness; and let them not rejoice over me.” [Rest of his letter used in report on his own reading - see under 539-1 Reports.]
R2. 5/23/32 EC’s letter to Dr. [539]:
“Your letter of the 16th was appreciated very much. I truly trust you are finding [2155] now on the improve. Yesterday I was talking with a doctor from Carolina who came in with a patient. He was telling me about one of ‘our’ patients whom he has been giving the magnetic treatments. [See 264-20 Reports.] He reports practically the same as we have had in every case through the years. The first few days rather quiet, then a period of about a week seemingly great aggravation to the condition, then gradually the improvement. It is the character of case that has seemed so hopeless - an ovarian tumor. She had been too weak for an operation, heart action too bad, blood supply very much below normal - but she has been gradually building up, and the lump itself has decreased from about the size of a big grapefruit to not much larger than a hen egg, without an operation. Her blood count has gone up, heart action is better, appetite and activity of the body very much better. I merely tell you this, as I know such things must be of interest.
“I am glad you feel there is at least a different atmosphere about [2155]. This seems to me most promising. We are finding more and more the meditations very wonderful in our local group, and we have reports from others over the country who are joining in with us. There certainly can’t be anything more wonderful than to be on speaking terms with our heavenly Father. I thank you for your opinion on the formula. To me, in my humble way, it has always appeared that our walk with God and our association with Him should be an everyday, practical thing.
“As for your own reading - I thank you! Often I feel, Doctor, when I receive such expressions, that I can through a glass darkly catch a vision of what the Master meant when He said to his disciples, ‘I have meat that ye know not of.’ Just to be helpful in some small way to my fellow man is to me the most glorious privilege I can possibly enjoy, for I remember (and it seems to me to come closer and closer each day of my life), ‘Inasmuch as ye have done it unto the least of these my little ones, ye have done it unto me.’
“I’ll certainly be glad to have the reports from time to time, and please know that I will always be ready to at least try to be of service to you or yours in any manner possible.
“With love and regards from all to you and yours, I am,”
Sincerely, Edgar Cayce
R3. 5/23/32 Father’s letter to EC:
“Responding about [2155]‘s week 5/16—23. Have followed your directions every day. Gave battery treatments during sleep at night - varying from 40 minutes to 90 minutes. Mrs. [2110] gave magnetic treatment every A.M.
“[2155] complained of pain in right thigh everyday. Has been having from one to several convulsions a day. Mentality about the same. He stayed in bed several days - at other times spends his time lying down on couch or daybed. He had a couple of falls, skinning his face and arms.
“He is nice about co-operating with the battery treatment and usually goes right on with his sleep. Now if there are any other points in his condition on which you would like information let me know. These above are about the main outstanding occurrences in his daily growth. ” [Rest of letter used in 539-1 Reports.]
R4. 6/3/32 Father’s letter to EC:
“[2155] has been better during the last 4 days. The pain in his R. leg and thigh has changed to a stiffness or heaviness. I just asked him about it, he is right here in my office and he answered, ‘oh sometimes it’s all right and sometimes it is not,’ - all in all there is an improvement. Mentally he shows a return to a former state consisting in being terribly upset at any glass windowpane that shows the least flaw or crack. He’ll just continue to insist that this must be repaired.
“I have given him the battery treatment every night and Mrs. [2110] and I have kept the early morning hour meditation and Mrs. [2110] the forenoon magnetic treatment. We’ll continue the same unless we hear from you to the contrary.
“How about Gold-Sodium Chloride Solution is that to be renewed and when. I dropped the battery one morning and cracked the sealing wax cover near the two ports. Do you think it is still doing the work?
“Thanks a lot,” [539]
R5. 6/14/32 Father’s letter to EC:
“[2155]‘s report is very good. No convulsions and no painful cramps. His personality is steadily becoming more and more agreeable.
“God’s ways are by necessity past finding out; but this also is why ‘trusting in the Lord and resting in the Lord’ are activities which the intellect can form a healthy concept of.
“Kindly keep at Mrs. [2110] to consider arranging for a small group to present your lessons to. I shall be pleased to cooperate.
“Are you acquainted with any of Thomas Troward’s writings? I have made an intensive study of his works. I have spoken of him as a trail-blazer towards the function of Science with religion. Religion without Science is just as incomplete as Science without religion.
“I shall continue the battery treatments as prescribed. Let me know if any changes are indicated.
“Exchange of ideas brings always an opportunity for enjoyment. You no doubt feel yourself up to the divine standard again. This is what I claim for you. ‘Be ye judged by His righteousness’
“It is always a great pleasure to hear from you.
“Yours in the One Name,” [539]
R6. 6/16/32 Father’s letter to EC:
“[2155] has seemingly reverted back a little into former conditions. Wednesday, yesterday, he had a rather severe convulsion with several smaller ones during the night, and early this morning. I thought I would write to you today so that this letter would reach you before Sunday. No doubt he will be all right again in a few days and will continue with his improvements.
“Mrs. [2110] thought that another reading of [2155] might be the thing. But my judgement was that you no doubt would be the better judge as to that. I wish to thank you for your friendly lines and encouraging words.
“Very truly yours,” [539]
R7. 6/21/32 EC’s letter to the Father:
“Yours of the 14th and 16th came, and while they were quite different, I trust the little set-back or return of those troublesome conditions will gradually pass away. These are very much as weaknesses in our own experience which have been allowed to become habits and that we are now trying to meet.
“I certainly hope we can interest Mrs. [2110] in arranging for a group. Would it be possible for her to spend a few days with us at Virginia Beach during our meeting next week? She could meet with many of our group and see the work that is being conducted here. We would like very much to have her do this if it is possible. I’m sure she could get a great deal of inspiration firsthand that would be more helpful than a great deal which might be written.
“Thank you very much for your reports, and whenever you feel circumstances or conditions call for a check-up on [2155] through a reading, please don’t hesitate to let us know - even if it is by wire; for we assure you that our while heart’s desire is to be of service.
“I am pleased to say that I am very much better, and trust I’ll be in a better position to serve my fellow man than ever in the past.
“All here send kindest personal regards to you and yours. Rest assured that we keep the appointments for the meditations consistently and persistently. As we learn to make His will ours, we all try to be persistent and consistent - for they are the keynotes of our Maker.”
Sincerely, Edgar Cayce
R8. 6/25/32 Mother’s letter to EC:
“I had been so in hopes that Dr. [539] and I would be able to come to Virginia Beach during the convening of your workers, but it was not to be. I am sure we are experiencing the benefit of your combined prayers for us, but [2155] has had quite a relapse. We were very happy because for almost 3 weeks he was free from convulsions, and then three weeks ago today they started again and he has had quite a hard time of it ever since with daily seizures, sometimes 3 or 4 but we are faithful in our treatments according to your instructions and also our early morning meditations with the healing group and then mine again while I am giving him the magnetic treatments.
“I am so in hopes that before the summer is over, Dr. [539] and I may be able to come to Virginia Beach and enjoy a personal acquaintance with you and yours and gain a greater insight into your splendid work. We have just had the great pleasure of being in daily contact with Mrs. Genevieve Behrend, the only personal pupil of Judge Troward. I am sure if we had not been students of Troward’s presentation, we could not have understood your work so well. His chapters III ‘The Unity of the Spirit’ IV ‘Subjective & Objective Mind’ in the Edinburgh Lectures of Mental Science is so clear in its explanation, that it gives us an intelligent understanding of your wonderful work, for which God bless you.
“We pray that the Wisdom that is expressing thru you, may express in ever increasing measure, bringing to those you contact more joy and livingness in His Name.
“With love to your whole family from each and every one of us,” I am Yours in Truth, [2110]
“P.S. Mrs. Behrend lectured before Unity here for 10 days. They do not as a rule any more allow any but authorized Unity Lecturers, but on account of the Troward works & her work, accorded her that privilege. We are not associated with Unity, but Dr. [539] had studied with Mrs. Behrend in New York about 12 years ago - so we had a very happy time together. Doctor [539] showed her your diagnosis of him [539-1]. She told me his condition was due to suppression. Just as I inferred from your reading. He is so powerful & should give out more, but God is working in and thru him to will & to do of His good pleasure.”
R9. 6/30/32 Father’s letter to EC:
“Thank you for your letter of recent date, June 21st to be exact. The time does not seem ripe for a visit to your place of activities. This is a pleasure that we anticipate now and hope to realize at some other time.
“[2155]‘s condition still requires constant care and supervision. He has fallen real hard from 2 to 3x per day during the last 4 days. He is so big and heavy that it takes 2 strong persons to take care of him. He seems to become spastic - almost like a person suffering from a poison like strychnine - that is he throws himself, kicks and resents any restraint.
“I have been using the battery treatment almost every night. I think I omitted 2 nights because he was so restless that it seemed inadvisable to apply the electrodes.
“Mrs. [2110] and I keep our appointments for meditative prayer & concentration every morning. Mrs. [2110] also follows the instructions for the morning treatment.
“There seems to be indicated that we are still ‘asking amiss.’ No doubt but what we’ll improve and will gain strength in our faith.
“May be that we’ll be getting some more light thru another reading. The monetary circulation requires the giving out somewhat in terms with the inflow or one will grow too much into debt. You have done to nobly and generously already that we feel very grateful to you as matters stand. However I would appreciate if you would express yourself about our further procedure. Shall I continue with the battery treatment and the other instructions?
“We are very glad to note that you have made a good recovery and feel up to par again.
“I just got to thinking that there is a note about this letter that does not meet with my approval. It is a touch of weariness and I am fully aware that it is a mistake to give it any room. No doubt this attitude is in itself sufficient to dispell it in time and I mention it only in order to prevent it from going any further.
“We are looking forward with pleasure at the thought of soon hearing from you again.
“Knowing with you, that only God can come to you or go from you. I am as ever,” Yours truly [539]
R10. 7/6/32 EC’s letter to Dr. [539]:
“I was indeed very glad to have yours of the 30th, but sorry to know that [2155] had been having some very hard days. This I had gathered very strongly in some of my noon meditations. However, today, very definitely, I got the impression there would now be a period of much better conditions for him. I pray this may be true indeed. Yes, by all means, keep up the treatments just as faithfully as we desire and expect the results to come. I want to check up on his condition very soon. Let me know where we may be able to locate him, or if we would be able to locate him at home most any time, or do you think it best to make a specific appointment for the check-up reading?
“From my own experience, I know just how weary you and Mrs. [2110] must grow at times. We all come to those periods, even as He - ‘O Jerusalem, Jerusalem! thou that stonest the prophets!’ and we may truly say as He, ‘Indeed offences must come, but woe unto him by whom they come.’ Or, as He puts it in another place, ‘Woe unto him who is not faithful even in temptation’; for with every temptation He has already prepared the way of escape.
“I certainly wish that you and Mrs. [2110] might have been with us last week. While we did not have as many members here from distant States as we had hoped, the enthusiasm, the love, the fellowship, the cooperation that was shown throughout the whole meeting, was such as to make the heart of anyone glad; especially one desiring to be a channel of blessing to his brother through the grace of the Father. His grace is sufficient, we know. The open meeting of our Norfolk Study Group #1 was especially beautiful. I’m sure we all were very much inspired by the words of hope expressed by each one. Also to have some living examples of the attempts of those present to aid others was certainly most gratifying.
“Dr. [539], please do not ever consider as to whether there is the proper monetary consideration for any service we may try to offer. Know this: We all believe we are doing God’s service, and that With the hope we create in the hearts and minds of those we try to serve He will quicken the heart of those who are able to contribute of the material necessities to carry on. Our Association is formed for help and Life - if possible - to our fellow man, and through its offices we all try to serve as best we can.
“I certainly hope that Mrs. [2110] will consider taking up the study group work in … I am hoping that the latter part of the summer or early fall I may be able to come to Chicago to meet with some people there. If I do, I will certainly try to get to … for a day; for I would love very much to know you folks in person.
“I appreciate your letters and reports from time to time. They are most helpful to every one of us.
“All send our love, and may His blessings rest upon each and every one of you.”
Sincerely, Edgar Cayce
R11. 7/11/32 EC’s letter to Mrs. [2110]:
“We were very glad to have yours of recent date. We always feel uplifted by your good letters.
“I’m certainly sorry that [2155] has been having such a siege. In my last letter to Dr. [539] I suggested that we make a check reading right away to see if anything further could be done right at this time. Such conditions, I know, arise at times due to no fault we may see of a material nature. Possibly it is that necessary stamen [stamina] and stability we need within our own selves to cope with the conditions being experienced by our loved ones. I trust we will be able to find something. Rest assured we want to be used in His name.
“We do hope that conditions and circumstances will adjust themselves, so that you and Dr. [539] can come down during the summer. We would love so much to know you personally, for we already feel we have a great deal in common.
“I’m sure you have enjoyed Mrs. Behrend. Unity is doing a very wonderful work, I think. For many years I have been in touch with some of their leaders and teachers. We gave some information once for Mr. Fillmore. [Charles Fillmore. No copy in files under Dr. Fillmore’s name - he may have obtained the reading for someone else. GD]
“We are progressing with our study group work, and I hope you will find these of great help to you in assisting those who may be gathered about you from time to time.
“Again thanking you, and trusting we may hear from you whenever possible, and with love from all to you and yours, I am,”
Sincerely, Edgar Cayce
R12. 7/14/32 Father’s letter to EC:
“Thanks for your letter and help. There are so many points in it that I wish to talk about that I’ll have to take them up by rote. I’ll take the most enjoyable one first. We are very happy to learn of your plans to visit Chicago and, intentions to visit us here in … We’ll have to unfold this more as your own plans will mature but I just mention it here to express our happy anticipations to meet you personally.
“I am sure that it would have been a good thing for Mrs. [2110] and myself to attend the yearly meeting of the association. It seemed to me that the time was not ripe and circumstances seemed to need a better adjustment, may be I was wrong. However, I am glad to have this opportunity to procure the literature as mentioned by Mrs. Hannah Miller and Mildred Mary Davis. I shall write to them under separate cover.
“I am glad also for words about continuing treatments along the line of your directions. They exemplify to me the importance of the trained will, the quality of an intelligent persistency and consistency in asking for what we really already have.
“Words like yours lift the apparent weariness and in fact make one enjoy the game of life more fully and righteously. One stops telling himself that is is so hard, etc., thanks.
“I am leaving the matter of check-ups entirely to your own guidance in this matter. Frequent changes are in a way more often an evidence of lack of faith than one of intelligent procedure. Hence, whenever you feel that a check-up is the thing to do, set the date and time and we’ll gladly do our part in co-operating with you and the power working as you.
“Before closing I want to ask you to prepare a time for a reading for Mrs. [2110]. I’m going to ask her to write to you directly as I recall that you are using a certain form sheet and I have none of them at my office.
“[2155] had several difficult times yesterday. His right leg cramped him very painfully; he had two complete convulsions. I just mention this here because I don’t know whether you care for this kind of report or not. In a way I don’t see much value in it. It seems to contribute nothing to the production of a change to normalcy.
“Kindly give our greetings and good will to all of yours and keep some yourself. Believe me I am yours as ever,” [539]
R13. 7/15/32 Mother’s letter to EC:
“Your very kind letter of the 11th received yesterday.
“I assure you Dr. [539] and I both appreciate more than I can express the privilege of our contact with you and your work and we hope that we may soon have the pleasure of knowing you and your family personally.
“[2155] has been continuing in his hard attacks, but I presume it is as you say, that we need these experiences to strengthen us and bring out stamina and character. I know it is teaching him to make an effort to curb his emotion to anger and he and I have some very instructive talks on the subject, and I find him increasingly willing to try to control himself. The cramps in his leg seem to be so severe at times (judging from the writhing of his body) that I often think that he does pretty well in his control.
“Dr. [539] is not feeling as well as I would like to see him feel. It appears to me as I see it, that the long siege with [2155]‘s condition, then Doctor’s studying of the spiritual laws, and the inability to practice this Spiritual work openly - the disappointment of not getting results with [2155] (and really altho a thorough, intellectual knowledge, there has been some lack somewhere) and his spirit has become so tired and frustrated, that the physical break has been the result. I don’t know whether I just made myself clear; if I were talking to you, I could - but maybe you understand anyhow. I think he is gradually learning that the intellect alone cannot do the work and I am sure his great earnestness will be rewarded in having God use him in a wonderful way in His service.
“I am enclosing your M.O. for $15.00 and will you kindly make an appointment with me for a Life Reading - at whatever time [See 2110-1] suits your convenience, as I will arrange for anytime you say that is convenient for you. I thought I would have a Life Reading, even if though as your son says, we are told something about ourselves we do not like to hear, yet I know whatever has been, I now am trying to do everything I can to come into harmony with God’s Laws, so I know it will strengthen me rather than deter my efforts. Have sometimes thought I must have been very wicked to have what to me seemed so much to bear, and yet I am always so happy when I can be of service, so I guess it has its compensations. I sometimes have thought that I had asked to be of service in just the capacity I am serving in, but then the time comes that we become conscious of God’s Love and Power and know some things are not necessary any more. I too sometimes think that we are about to make a change into a more harmonious situation and location.
“As I understand it the Life Reading does not give any information regarding the physical condition. If I might ask one question in that respect it would be if anything & what could be done to restore hearing in my left ear. From early childhood I have suffered from earache, etc., until now the hearing in the one ear is gone. My mother was completely deaf for quite a number of years before she passed on.
“I would also ask if you could send me some more of the application blanks. I had this one I am using and one I gave to a Mrs. Anderson from …, Ill. She said she would send for a reading. I wonder if she did. Could you send one to Mrs. Thos. […], N. Jefferson Ave., also to Mrs. Herbert […], Detroit, Mich. They both desire information.
“Dr. & I are very faithful with our early morning meditation. I also am keeping up the magnetic treatments and prayer with [2155] at 10:30 (our time).
“Please excuse long letter. Would be glad to have you make check reading for [2155] if you think we would get any additional help for him. Did you and Mrs. Cayce receive Christian Victory Magazine? I requested Mr. Keeler to send it, as I think it such a splendid little magazine?
“In sincerest appreciation and love to you all, I am,”
Sincerely, Mrs. [2110]
R14. 7/25/32 EC’s letter to Dr. [539]:
“It is always a pleasure to have a line from you. I certainly hope my anticipated trip to Chicago will materialize in the early Fall, for I look forward with much pleasure to knowing you and Mrs. [2110] personally.
“I hope that you both received helpful and interesting information from the data compiled by the secretaries during the Congress. A.R.E. First Annual Congress report including general EC readings 5747-1 on Child Training; EC’s lecture based on 5752-1 and 5752-2 in re How to Develop Your Psychic Powers; and 5749-2 on Life of Jesus Before beginning His ministry.] You will be able, I am sure, to offer helpful suggestions regarding the preparation of this so that it might be clarified for students who have been delving into the study of such for some time - as yourself. Anything you may have to offer in that direction will be gratefully received. We often feel that we do not know just what is best to ask for in such information. Apparently the Forces or Sources of the information will attempt to give an answer to most anything that is asked, and whether this is just the type that should be given out at this time or not is a question in the minds of many of us. Some are ready for it, I know - but for some I am afraid it may make such a big question mark, and they might not go into it sufficiently to find out how much value it may be; producing fear rather than constructive influence.
“At times I feel very weak and insignificant, Doctor - but to find the words I have written are encouraging to my brother indeed makes life much more worthwhile. You can no doubt appreciate my feelings somewhat, when you realize what a struggle it has been to me with so much criticism from the profession - and from many individuals whom we have been trained to trust, and to honor their knowledge and training. There comes a time when we wonder if it is worth it all, but when we have the knowledge that we have given some brother new hope, when we have in our own experience those things that we know are life itself, physically, mentally and spiritually, how CAN we doubt His word, ‘What you ask in my name, believing, that will the Father give you, that I may be glorified in you.’ And it is in His name that we seek to help everyone.
“I understand that you have gotten some copies of our first lesson, also I will await with anxiety to know your comment on this. Please remember that constructive criticism is often as helpful as, and possibly more than, a glorifying of a weak effort.
“We sent some applications to Mrs. [2110] and we will make the appointment as soon after we hear from her as possible.
“Yes, I appreciate the reports. I know from your letters that you do not allow having to report adverse conditions to influence your desire and willingness to blot out that, whatever it may be, which prevents [2155] from gaining the full consciousness of the Christ life within his physical being. He is able to heal. He WILL, if we will believe. Help Thou our unbelief!
“Let us hear from you when you can.”
Sincerely, Edgar Cayce
R15. 7/28/32 Mother’s letter to EC:
“I am so sorry I made this error. You will see by the enclosed that I misdirected the letter to you, which I mailed from here two weeks ago this coming Friday - I have been waiting to hear from you every day for an appointment, but of course you did not receive my letter and this morning it was returned.
“Things are just about the same with [2155]. He has not had a severe convulsion for 6 days but is crampy and on the couch most of the time. I have been faithful with the magnetic treatments - but it is rather difficult as he talks & twists so much. He doesn’t seem to be able to keep still. I guess it is because he feels crampy. Doctor said he would write to you today - so I guess you will hear from him too.
“With kindest regards to all of you, hoping you are all well and happy, I am”
Sincerely, Mrs. [2110]
R16. 7/28/32 Father’s letter to EC:
“Just a line to tell you that we are doing our bit. Not 100% or even 90%, but our heart is in it. Again I wish to thank you for your help and encouraging words. Wish that I could do something in return.
“[2155] is doing better. I wish to mention a personal experience of mine with him. I do so in order to find out if you have had any similar reports.
“[2155] has carried a certain facial mien for so long that it had sort of grown on a person. Now here lately I find myself looking at him and for the moment see an entirely different mien. One approaching that one is inclined to call ‘normal’, that is kindly, understanding, cheerful.
“As I said it does not last long but has the appearance of something underneath that by growth will soon make its appearance.
“With greetings to you all I am as ever,” Yours truly, [539]
“P.S. Could I procure another supply of Gold Chloride for making up the solution. I believe that my present solution requires renewing as it does not show any effect on the lead electrode anymore. What about it?”
R17. 7/31/32 N. H. Prouty’s [M.D.? - Magnetic healer?] letter to EC:
“I am indeed sorry to hear about your doctor friends’ [539] son [2155] and I sincerely hope that we can help him over the spots where as yet there is difficulty.
“I do not believe many, if any, of these troubles are originally brain troubles. Few doctors, at first, agree to this; yet they fail to cure these cases and I do succeed; the answer is then a wrong basis for treatment, or an ineffective remedy.
“I believe that the cause of most of these cases is with some organ in the abdomen; generally it is a form of mucous colitis. There is, too, the reflex from the generative organs, and with young women these should have consideration.
“This phase also appears in boys who begin to be afflicted at 10 to 16; the cause being most often located in the seminal resides, a congestion retarding normal development and producing an excessive nervous reflex.
“Your success with this case, and then the relapses seem to indicate a renewal of the activity of the cause. Evidently you are using the right treatment, but I shall … (?) add a hint or two. How about acid reaction foods, also too much roughage? Have you gone into this? I am inclined to believe that here is a part of the trouble. I also am inclined to believe that the irritation is as low in the bowel as the sigmoid and that an unusual dryness in the contents, at times, has the effect of renewing, to some extent, the irritating cause. This has proved to be the case in some of our experiences. Roughage, even the whole wheats, as bread, and bran breakfast foods will cause this trouble. Often Squibb’s white oil will relieve this; many other oils still retain enough gasoline to cause the trouble we are now fighting. I once had a doctor who, with several of his consultants, ‘just knew’ that he had a cancer in the intestines, but when we changed his ‘oil’ he was O.K. in a week.
“You do not give me much to go on; age; condition, bodily and mental; how long the trouble has existed, etc. are important as also are idea of previous, and present, other treatments. If you, or the doctor, would write me more fully I might help more.
“For the contraction on the left side try the left hand on the abdomen and groin, I am assuming this is the contraction area, and the right on the back opposite; then replace the right with the left and use the right over the liver in front. If the patient is in bed have him lie well over on his right side; begin at the shoulders and draw back hands down the back neck to heels; go slowly, 12 to 20 strokes per minute is plenty fast enough. This will sooth all the back nerves and aid in relaxing the contraction. This form of treatment in pseudo-appendicitis, right hand side of course, will relieve the contraction and drawing up of the right leg for comfort.
“I have no doubt but that the cause is from some organ in the abdomen, and not from the brain. I wish I had more data to go on.
“Who is giving the treatments?
“I believe that 8 or 9 out of ten of these can be greatly relieved, if not entirely cured. I shall be glad to hear further about this case. Pass this letter on to the doctor; perhaps he will write me in some detail. I certainly hope you attain success with this case.
“Yours truly,” N. H. Prouty [EC sent copy to Dr. [539], see his letter 8/9/32 under 2155-3 Reports.]
R18. 8/2/32 Father’s letter to EC:
“Yours of July 25th is before me. I think that I wrote you some day last week - probably on the 27th. It is fairly possible therefore that our letters may cross in transit.
“I feel however that I should answer your recent communications in which you ask my constructive criticism - about the Norfolk Study Group No. 1. I thank you for the compliment. May be you’ll recall the story of the darky boot black to whom a customer gave a $20 bill to make change of and retain his dime - You know how he searched in one pocket and then another until finally he handed back the bill with the words: ‘No boss, I’se got not enough money to make change but I’se thanks you for the compliment’
“Well that’s me: However I think I know what you mean and I appreciate that you don’t want ‘a glorifying’ but an honest to goodness discussion.
“Come to think of it, I had used this lesson and had read it to one of my students as an example of real good work. When I came to the prayer I did permit myself to suggest that (in the light of the teaching that I had been insisting upon) the wording might (to a beginner) permit the furtherance of the idea of Separation between God and Man. I believe that as long as we pray - with any sense of separation at all that our prayer must be a failure. I do not claim that I have personally overcome all the resistance to this viewpoint but I believe that I can see fairly clearly why any form of healing of another as we put it, must, in reality be a healing of one’s own self. I believe that I could tabulate the scientific facts and precepts upon which such a concept could be built up - scientifically. But there is no use of bringing anything like this into letters between you and myself - for there is nothing to argue about when both agree. Therefore in speaking to this student I asked if there would be possible to word the prayer to emphasize this unity between the Father and the Son.
“Another point that we spoke about was the importance of familiarizing oneself just what the ‘will of God’ must be and why it has become expedient that the individual should express such statements as:
‘Not my will but thine be done’
‘Thy will be done in earth as it is in heaven’
“I have received and am continuing to receive a great deal of help from your lesson.
“‘The taking stock of one’s thoughts and acts - in the daily walk of life’ - Here is after all the life giving germs of that lesson. One may go a long way in an intellectual dissertation - but what good will come of it if it does not result in practical application.
“And right here where I would ask you to give me your assistance kindly give me ;your help towards this watchfulness and practical application. I had to come a long way to unlearn some things which I found were not true and in itself that would only be a negative blessing unless one learns to use that which is true.
“You know, I have to laugh at you telling me that, ‘at times you feel weak and insignificant, etc.’ Now you really can’t mean this - You cannot think of ‘who’ and ‘what’ you are and permit any such words. What about the criticism from the profession - in the finals it is always the cream that will come to the top - and ‘Truth does and will always prove itself’ - though it is a hard taskmaster. Well I had better find a stopping place.” With best regards, [539]

R20. 8/3/32 EC’s letter to Mrs. [2110]:
“We have just received your application for the life reading. It is too bad that the long delay has been caused by the wrong addressing of your letter. We also wondered why we didn’t hear from you, as Dr. [539] had written that you were requesting the reading.
“It is necessary that you give us the PLACE of your birth. I think you have given the other details necessary. For this type of reading it is not necessary that we make an appointment, for the information is procured rather from the presenting of your name, birthdate and place, than from your location at the exact time it is given. We certainly hope that we may obtain something that will be of help. Our experience through the last few years has led us to believe that these life readings are the most valuable of any we have received at all. A close study of these enables us to understand our impulses, inclinations, also much of our own surroundings, and - best of all - suggestions are offered that will help us meet our individual problems, if we can carry them out in our everyday life.
“I don’t think I have ever had any correspondence that I have enjoyed more than yours and Dr. [539]‘s. I am looking forward to the time when I may know you all in person. For several years I have had some correspondence with a doctor, whom I have never met, who has been making a most extensive study of the magnetic treatments. While there are many ideas we have in common, there are also many beliefs in which we differ. I have recent]y asked his opinion about [2155], and I will send the letter to Dr. [539]. He may know of Dr. Prouty, [N.H. Prouty, M.D.? Magnetic healer?] and can get in touch with him direct if he chooses.
“We are having some very wonderful reports from our friends throughout the country. I had a very warm personal friend in Alabama, a young man who was in my Sunday School class for years. He came to trust in the information. Then something arose in his life that for the time being seemed to cause him to lose faith in most everything. Gradually he has gotten back into his church work, and a few weeks ago sought information through these channels again - which seemed to help in his mental and spiritual awakening. Also he received physical advice for his two boys, and today I have a report from him that both are progressing most wonderfully. I am glad that he is happy about them again.
“Be sure and let us have the place of your birth, and we will send you the life reading just as quickly as possible.
“Appreciating your letters, your interest, and trusting that we may be of service, I am,” Sincerely, Edgar Cayce
R21. 8/3/32 [539]‘s letter to EC:
“Maybe you’ll wonder as to just why I am turning so literary and write letters to you two days in succession. Well yesterday I failed to mention [2155]. I made no report - possibly because like some card player - I found that my best assistance laid in a pass.
“It occurred to me however since then to see what you can do thru taking up the following questions in a re-reading for [2155]. (1) What lies behind the impulse to break glass only to have this followed by a restlessness for having it repaired. During the last 3 or 4 weeks it has been one continual expense, grief and trouble about this confusion. Of course this is not anything new. It has shown itself for many years. About 3 years ago, when this symptom showed itself much worse, I placed him into the receiving ward of the State hospital for the Insane at Bartonville, Ill. (about … miles from here). He did the same there - but only once. In some way - I don’t know just what was said to him - he became much better. However just now he seems going back to the same mental state.
“He had a convulsion last night during his sleep. (2) What advice does the Intelligence of undifferentiated Spirit give in order that the normal may be established. (3) Is placing him back into the institution advisable or not? (4) What can we do to protect ourselves against the inharmony, worry and confusion that arises usually under these conditions? (5) Is there anything else - at this time that may be of specific help to any of us. Thanks. Thanks also for the little prayer that you had enclosed with your last letter. I find it helpful to me in practicing His Presence. Thanks.” [539]
