This Psychic Reading given by Edgar Cayce at the office of the Association, Arctic Crescent, Virginia Beach, Va., this 24th day of July, 1941, in accordance with request made by the self - Miss [2543], new Associate Member of the Ass”n for Research & Enlightenment, Inc., recommended by Mrs. [2574], through Miss [993].

Time of Reading 3:35 to 4:00 P. M. Eastern Standard Time. …, Florida.

1. GC: You will go over this body carefully, examine it thoroughly, and tell me the conditions you find at the present time; giving the cause of the existing conditions, also suggestions for help and relief of this body. You will answer the questions, as I ask them:

2. EC: Yes, we have the body here, [2543].

3. As we find, there are disturbing conditions which prevent the better physical functioning. These have to do especially with the coordination between the sympathetic and the cerebrospinal nervous system, particularly in relationship to the activities of the organs of the sensory system.

4. These then affect primarily the vocal relationships TO the auditory and the optic forces of the body.

5. Then, these are the conditions which exist with this body, [2543] we are speaking of, present in this room:

6. The blood supply we find very good as related to the general activities of the body. As related to the activity to the auditory forces AND the optic forces, there are hindrances because of the general strain which has existed in some of the glandular forces.

7. Thus, through those pressures that have existed, we have an impoverishment to the nerves of the sensory system.

8. This has existed for some time. Thus it has grown to be a general condition as related to the glandular forces, and a specific or a constitutional disturbance as related to the auditory forces and to the vision.

9. All of these as we find, however, may be materially aided.

10. The activities of these upon the nerve forces of the body:

11. In times back, as a minor injury to those areas in the upper dorsal, 2nd and 3rd dorsal, we had a pressure or subluxation that existed. This began first to give expression in the amount of blood flow and nerve energy to the auditory forces. This caused a thickening of tissue in the auditory chamber.

12. It did NOT in the beginning cause the whole of the drying of the fluids in the ear, and the balance; though this was experienced by the body as conditions developed, - a dizziness at times, at others a swimming of the head and the like.

13. This CONTINUED pressure, however, has caused a great deal of this fluid to become static, and has thickened the combination of the auditory forces - or the stirrup, the anvil and the like are NOT stationary but thickened.

14. In the repression, from the 3rd dorsal through the secondary in the 3rd and 4th cervical, this also affected the vision - through the same character of impoverishment.

15. Not that the vision was affected other than by the lack of focus, or the activities from the nerve centers TO the optic nerve; not impoverished as to cause a hardening. But this remained more of that nature of just impoverishment, and the blurring, with the inability for the true stereoscopic reaction to occur.

16. This then has drawn upon the thyroid glands, the glands of the tendons as related to the adrenals. All of these at times, through the nerve reflexes, have reacted upon the organs, but has not produced an organic disturbance either in the kidneys or in the stomach; though all of these at times have become involved in the condition, - at periods when the body, through becoming supersensitive, has allowed itself to feel sorry for itself.

17. The ability of the body through its mental awareness to make the best of all situations has brought, however, the best of influences throughout the activities; though this oft produces a general high nerve tension to the body - and the body grows quite weary.

18. These have rather occurred at periods, though, and are a part - now - of the GENERAL conditions; not affecting the organs of the body.

19. In making applications for helpful influences, these must be kept in mind:

20. Each condition has been and is a purposeful experience. Thus the activities must be in that manner in which the spiritual, the mental and the material influences are coordinated into one.

21. There are physical deficiencies. These need to be supplied from physical sources; but with that attitude of a mental and spiritual purpose to assist the body in gaining a normal equilibrium in those portions of the physical forces where deficiencies exist.

22. These as we find will require more the mechanical than the chemical reactions. Thus we would have an alleviation of those subluxations in those areas that are producing the disturbances to the sensory system. But do this ONLY by one in sympathy with, acquainted with and believing in the efficacy of prayer, of doing as is indicated; all, no more, no less.

23. Then these may be indicated, to those who are doubtful, by the fluoroscope or x-ray, as existent in the 3rd and 2nd dorsal, in the 3rd and 4th cervical. These, of course, with their retention upon the impulse, have produced the disturbance.

24. At the beginning there may be those tendencies towards FEAR, because of the amount of inflammation as will be produced to these organs of the senses - with the first few treatments. But continue with these, in series, and we will find we will bring bettered conditions, more hopeful experiences, and EVENTUALLY we may restore not only the hearing but also the vision - to ALMOST, if not quite, normalcy.

25. Have such osteopathic adjustments made by Dobbins. We would have fifteen of such treatments in the first series.

26. Then have a rest period of three weeks, and then another series of osteopathic adjustments. Continue with these in series, and we will find better conditions coming for the body.

27. During the rest periods between the series of osteopathic treatments, there will be the needs for the use of electrical forces. These we would have applied from the static electrical forces, NOT of any other character. Hence use that in which the low electrical charge is produced chemically, and carry with this into the system the vibrations from the metallic elements that aid in supplying the energies through the activities of the glands that have been devitalized by the drawing upon them for activity. These properties are needed to stimulate those vital activities, - not taking them internally, but vibratorially. We refer to Atomidine (which is atomic iodine) and Chloride of Gold. The vibrations of these we would take alternately through the low Wet Cell Appliance. The attachments would be made as follows:

28. One day, when using the Gold: The small copper plate would be attached directly to the body at the 9th dorsal, while the large nickel plate - through which the Gold vibration passes (in the proportions of one grain Chloride of Gold to one ounce of Distilled Water - and use at least six ounces) - would be attached to the umbilical and lacteal duct plexus, or four fingers to the right from the navel center, see?

29. The next day, when using the Atomidine: The small copper plate would be attached to the 2nd cervical (this governing the activity to the upper portion of stomach as also to the center through which the nerve forces to the sensory system and cerebrospinal system cross at that area), while the larger nickel plate - through which the Atomidine vibration passes (in the proportions of three ounces commercial strength Atomidine to three ounces of Distilled Water) would also be applied to the umbilical and lacteal duct plexus.

30. Use the Appliance each day during the rest period from the osteopathy, - for thirty minutes; one day with the Gold Solution, the next day with the Atomidine Solution.

31. Then have the second series of the osteopathic adjustments.

32. Even before beginning to use the Appliance, we will see helpful conditions.

33. Do that.

34. In the matter of the diet: The body is a very good dietician, but take more of those herbs or vegetables that carry Vitamin B and B-1; especially during the periods these applications indicated are activative in the system. For, as the body is cleansed by the removing of those hindrances, there is the need for replacing of energies; and these are the energizing forces for the body.

35. As to the mental attitude, - keep that faith in Him, who doeth all things well.

36. Ready for questions.

37. (Q) What causes and what should be done for the skin condition? (A) The glands purified, by the use of the Atomidine vibratorially taken, we will remove these disturbances.

38. (Q) Should the Appliance be discontinued when beginning the second series of osteopathic treatments? (A) It would be hard to carry this about. Discontinue. But begin when there has been the completing of the second series.

39. We are through for the present.

Miss [2543]:

The Roentgen examination of the cervical spine included stereoscopic views in the anteroposterior and lateral projections. In addition the odontoid process was likewise studied with stereoscopic films.

The x-ray examination is negative for evidence of fracture, dislocation, or other bony change. The alignment of the individual vertebral segments is normal and there are no evidences of arthritic change.

I see nothing on this examination to account for any discomfort in the cervical region from a standpoint of bone pathology.

R2. 8/41 Copy of Dr. […]‘s letter to [2543] (niece):

My dear [2543]:

Your letter came a few days ago and the x-ray pictures came last night. I studied them very carefully and am unable to find a defect in any of the bony parts. The vertebra seems to be in perfect alignment. I am returning the x-rays to Dr. Shaw and thanking him for sending them to me.

I am sure that you know the nerves which supply the eyes and the ears do not come from the spinal cord itself but through special canals from the brain to the organs.*

I beg you not to chase rainbows because there is never a sack of gold at the end of them.

Dear Miss [2543]:-

In reply to your letter of the 6th, will try to answer as your questions arise.

I hardly know what to say about the treatment for nerve deafness other than the fact that the results are often discouraging. Most of my work here is treating diseases of the eye and refraction. Probably we could do something for the eye condition.

I don’t know that it would be possible for me to accomplish more than your own local osteopath, but we can try.

I shall start for a two weeks vacation to-morrow, perhaps more. I shall be back in my office not later than Sept. 8th.

R4. 9/28/41 [2543]‘s ltr. to EC:

Dear Mr. Cayce,

I was sorry I didn’t get to see you again last Wednesday afternoon before leaving, especially so since it later turned out I didn’t get to come back with Miss Montague for her reading. I wanted you to know that I appreciate very deeply your changing your Wednesday afternoon’s program in order to give me a check reading, and your willingness to do so. I also appreciate more than I can easily express your advice given me then. I had been in quite a quandary since my x-ray pictures had shown nothing out of alignment to a physician’s eye, & since my uncle advised me not to go chasing after rainbows, for there was never a pot of gold at the end, and perhaps particularly because Dr. Dobbins wrote that “results in treating nerve deafness were often discouraging” and his saying that he was not sure he could do more for me than a local osteopath. That and my unwillingness to leave my job had brought me to a stop gap in going after treatment.

Mrs. [2574] seemed to think that after Mrs. Sanford’s prayer with you that you had a clearer feeling that I should follow the directions you had given me in the reading in … Am I right about this? I have spent the two days since I got back going after women osteopaths. I found Mrs. Withers’ Dr. Withers [Avis M. Withers, D.O.] but she doesn’t practice any more & sent me to a very young woman who has an office down town. I doubt if she is one who believes in the efficacy of prayer, & she said that she wouldn’t need any one else to tell her what was wrong, that she would find it herself.

Then I went to Unity Center & asked if they had an osteopath among their group. The leader told me of one who lives at … Beach, 18 miles from here - so I traveled out by bus to see her this afternoon. I found a gray-haired, approachable woman who practices in her own house. She listened to what I had to say, & offered to give me an examination. I had mentioned the reading but not shown it to her. She seemed to find something out of alignment in the back of my neck, also something on my chest (which I didn’t care about having her find!), but was more concerned over what she called a pelvic twist than anything else. She said one pelvic bone went up & one went down.

After reading the psychic reading she agreed to follow it, and even to limit her treatment to the cervical and dorsal regions you mentioned if I insist. But she said to write and ask you if it wouldn’t be wise to have the pelvic adjustments made too. She said if anything was wrong with the adrenal glands, it would have to be corrected in the pelvic region. But I was more of the opinion that the wet cell appliance was to take care of the glands.

Now this is what is most important: She did not have an osteopathic diploma to be seen. I asked her if she had one & she said of course but she didn’t show it any more. Then she said, “didn’t Miss Miscally (?) at Unity Center tell you I was good?” and I replied, “yes.” She said that she had graduated in 1904 - so I wonder if she isn’t one of the older ones who may not have had as much or as good training as some like Dr. Dobbins. That is the catchy point. She later opened a closet door & showed me her license to practice osteopathy, duly signed by our Board of Health officers. She was very nice personally and seemed very interested in following the reading after she read it, though I am afraid that in giving treatments she would want to go further than the reading said go. Her being at the Beach and my working hours would necessitate evening visits twice a week & one on Saturday afternoon, if I were to have 3 treatments a week - and I should certainly want not less. I am almost, in spite of myself, afraid to go alone to a strange woman & trust my bones to her. Do osteopaths ever heal them?? I guess this is where I need courage & faith - but the important question is, IS SHE A GOOD OSTEOPATH? Can you give me any enlightenment there? Do you have a Journal of osteopaths in which she might be listed? Her name is Ida Ellis Bush, D.O., …, Florida.

There is one more woman osteopath that I know of here. She is listed in the civic directory part of the telephone book & has a down town office. The Unity Center leader said she had heard she was very good, but knew nothing about her personally. Her name is Julia Larmoyeux Kline [Julia Larmoyeux Kline, D.O.].

I hate to bother you further, but will certainly appreciate it if you can give me any enlightenment about this matter of the osteopaths. I want to be sure to go to a good one, and have asked the Lord to direct me to the right one - but I have no clear feeling of what is right.

I’m so glad you got your healing through Mrs. Sanford immediately! Wish I had half your responsiveness.

Dear Miss [2543]:-

Have yours of the 28th. Appreciate very much your confidence in me in asking about the various Osteopaths. Wish to assure you however no real Osteopath will ever break a bone, and both the ones whose names you give, Bush, also Kline. Should think it would be easier for you to go to Dr. Kline. Would at least see her, talk with her, and if she will write me will be very glad to try and get her on the right track. If she wishes nothing to do with the work then it might be possible it would be best to try Dr. Bush, unless it is too much of a trouble for you. Dr’s in this profession are like those in all other classes, there are some who would never be Dr’s no matter how much they have studied or how many degrees they have. There are others who are naturally Dr’s whether they have had as many degrees as others or not. Dr. Bush is a Regular Dr. - but does not keep up her affiliation with the regular board. Dr. Kline does, so for your own convenience, as well as satisfaction of mind, see Dr. Kline then make your decision.

Of course to my mind, Miss [2543], Dr. Dobbins was right in writing you as he did. He of course never knows whether the person will keep up their treatments or will they respond just as the readings say they will - naturally will take some time if nature is to heal, and am sure it will be best for you to try it out as your are planning - wish might have seen you and talked with you again. Am feeling very well. Have had no more trouble since that afternoon, save the slow eliminations, that is natural to me. Please, Please, don’t think it any bother and know am anxious to be of a service. If haven’t given you just what you wish here please don’t hesitate to write again, and certainly will wish to know just how you respond, and would like to in, say six weeks or less of treatments, check up, for it will tell whether the Dr. is doing what is desired to be done or not, more or less - that is whether they are doing as suggested or as they like - some how I favor Dr. Kline. Hope it works out fine.

Dear Mr. Cayce,

Thank you very much for your nice letter of the first. I went to see Dr. Kline Friday and was so pleased with her that I let her give me the first treatment right then. I found her a most intelligent appearing, and very handsome middle-aged woman, and very approachable about the psychic reading. After I talked to her a little she gave me an examination, upon the completion of which she said that she had found conditions (I think she ment cervical) which if reworked (?) might help my hearing, but perhaps not to the extent of enabling me to dispense with my hearing aid. And she added, “And you have a very bad back.” She must have meant the dorsal region because in the examination she did not go further than that. Then I showed her the Reading, and she read the whole thing. When she had finished I asked if she had found the pressures where you said they were, and she replied yes, and that she had found another, occipital.

I think it would be a good idea for you to write to her. I certainly want the treatments to accomplish what they should, and am most anxious not to make a mistake in any way. Maybe you will send me a copy of the letter or send the letter for Dr. Kline to me and I can give it to her, unless you prefer that I not see it. Her address is Dr. Julia L. Kline, … Building, …

I am due to go back tomorrow at my lunch hour for the second treatment. Taking three a week would finish the fifteen first treatments about November 5th. So when do you think the check reading should be made? I will let you advise me about this.

Dr. Kline said she agreed with me that faith would do great things, and as I said before, she was very approachable about everything I talked to her about. I do not know, though, that she has extraordinary faith or that she believes particularly in the efficacy of prayer. I hope she does, but I don’t know.

Be sure to give my friend, Mrs. [2600] a wonderful reading on the 8th. I believe her appointment is for then. She’s a wonderful person, & should certainly have one of the best readings you have ever given.

Will you send me one or two of those little booklets like the one you handed Mrs. Sanford when we were there? Mrs. Cayce gave me two, but I think Mrs. Sanford took all three of them by mistake.

R7. 11/1/41 “I have had 15 osteopathic adjustments today [to date?], and now am waiting to hear from the Rdg. next Wed. Dr. Kline thought it would be well to finish this far ahead of the Rdg., so she gave me four treatments last week and four this, finishing today. It was her suggestion, and you told me to abide by what she thought was best, so I did.

“I thought the Wet Cell Appliance might arrive today, but since it didn’t I look for it Monday. I ordered it from Mr. Godfrey in Norfolk the first part of this week. Of course I want to begin on that as soon as possible.

“The only change I’ve noticed since my treatments began is along my spine. Dr. Kline said about a week ago, “Your neck is coming along fine.” I feel a sort of slight strain along it and along the dorsal region of my back. Nothing else. The treatments are never painful or severe in any way - just massage, I would describe it.

“Dr. Kline has had a copy of the part of the Rdg. pertaining to treatment made, and she of course wants to see the second Rdg. She is very interested and I feel sure will try to follow the directions given. She said she had no particular questions to ask, so I doubt her writing to you. I enclose my questions on a separate sheet. I’m counting on you to give me a better Rdg. than before, and definite proof that I’ve improved! I know you’ll do your best. I enclose the $10 fee, which I think is what a Ck. Rdg. costs. Please let me know if I am mistaken about this.

“I think the booklet about you and your work is splendid. No one can help but be impressed by your simplicity and sincerity.

“I’ll look forward to receiving the Rdg. next week. At 10:30 on the 5th I will be, etc., working and praying too, I hope. My father and mother, Mrs. [2574], Mrs. Sanford and Miss [2600] will be helping me too. Dr. Kline said she would ‘be there’ also. So I’m very fortunate.
