This psychic reading given by Edgar Cayce at his home on Arctic Crescent, Virginia Beach, Va., this 21st day of January, 1937, in accordance with request made by the self - Mr. [370], Active Member of the Ass”n for Research & Enlightenment, Inc.
[Edgar Cayce; Gertrude Cayce, Conductor; Gladys Davis, Steno.]
Time of Reading 3:30 to 3:40 P. M. Eastern Standard Time. …, Ala. (Physical Suggestion)
-
EC: Yes, we have the body here, [370]; this we have had before.
-
As we find, there are considerable improvements in the general physical forces of the body since last we had same here.
-
The natural reactions, however, from the attending activities of the body, by inducing greater eliminations of the poisons, are shown regarding the blood pressure, the heart’s activity; as expressed in the shortness of breath and the dizziness that occurs at times.
-
As we find, many conditions must be taken into consideration by the body. These conditions have been a natural growth, and the system has attempted and does attempt to work with the best that is created in the activities of the body itself.
-
Remember that the attitude of the body - towards circumstances, towards individuals, towards conditions - ever has much to do with creating an environment for disturbing or for helpful things as related to the bodily functions.
-
As there have often been resentments, animosities, yes even at times hate - these have worked with the general conditions of poor eliminations, disturbances through the glandular system as related to the eliminations of the body, the activities of the kidneys and the glandular system as related to same, the poor activity of the liver.
-
Hence we have had an engorgement of the circulation as exists between the heart and the liver itself. Hence it will require time, patience, persistence on the part of the body in keeping the eliminations. Not so much by the constant using of cathartics, that are in their very nature more or less habit-forming - or producing conditions upon which the body depends for its activity (without such things causing those disturbances that make for hardships upon the circulation), but the use of enemas as indicated to keep the colon cleansed. Also the rubs across those portions of the back and the making of the general attitudes - with EVERY condition arising - more helpful, hopeful; never holding resentments, alleviating the mind from all of those things wherein at times hard feelings are held towards individuals or peoples or circumstances or conditions for activities.
-
Know that there are ever those experiences to be met in the experience of each soul, that must be met. Meet these, not in anger, not in wrath but in gentleness and the fruits of the spirit; not in swearing vengeance or any of those attitudes.
-
And meet the physical forces of the body in the same way and manner. Study all portions of the body, as to their needs, as to their activities.
-
And let the diet and the physical activity be in accord with that which is in keeping with a constructive building within the body and not that that ever tears down.
-
Be consistent throughout.
-
And let thy prayer oft be, in thy deeper meditation:
FATHER, GOD, THOU ART LIFE! THOU ART HOPE! THOU ART JUSTICE! THOU ART MERCY! IN THESE MAY I, THY SERVANT, CLAIM THY CARE, THY LOVE; THAT MY BODY MAY BE CLEANSED AS MY MIND MAY BE CLEANSED, THAT I MAY BE BEFORE THEE HOLY AND ACCEPTABLE UNTO THEE TO DO SERVICE TO MY FELLOW MAN IN THY NAME; AND THAT THE GLORY OF THY LOVE AS MANIFESTED IN THE CHRIST, MY SAVIOR, OUR SAVIOR, MAY BE MANIFESTED MORE AND MORE IN EARTH.*
-
In thine own words magnify these to ALL, to every soul ye meet day by day!
-
And be consistent as to the applications of those suggestions and those activities that may bring about this; for every force and every power in the earth is of Him. Will you use it in His service or in defying Him in thy vainglory?
-
We are through for the present.

- [5/13/41 “The meditation given me in 1/37, in 370-5, has meant much to me, and from time to time I have gained more understanding, or as much as I can take, as to its meaning - it is so all embracing.”]
Reports
Reports & Follow-up
R1. 1/22/37 EC’s letter: “Don’t know that there is much I can add to the suggestions given in your last rdg., as at times the rdg. does give what it has to say, touching on the material, and then giving one something to think about. But I’m sure you will find a lot of help in the physical things to be done; hope so, anyway. If not, please let me have your reaction to what has been said and if we can clear in any way the course for you to follow for better health you know we will try and do so”
R2. 1/27/37 “The rdg. together with your letter came in Sat. morning’s mail. I read the rdg. with eagerness, and many reactions came to me concerning this rdg. that was, for one thing, distinctly for me and me only, and perhaps the last reaction and realization that came to me at that time was its brevity, and this had added force when I reflected back through the body of the rdg. I can understand now, as never before, the warnings I have seen to those seeking information at this source, never to seek without being willing to know the truth. But let me hasten to say, for fear these thoughts and reactions do not sound on paper as they really were, that with all of the thoughts came an indwelling joy and spirit of thanksgiving that I had received such messages; that they told so distinctly about me in mind, spirit and body; that it gave me such a distinctively personal prayer and meditation (so broad and wide and high and deep), that I am a servant of my Father-God, that I may be a servant to my fellow man and that I may indeed inherit the blessings and joys of His kingdom along with the vast hosts that serve Him. That all of this is true and is possible to so unworthy an individual as this rdg. shows I have been.
“You very intelligently wrote that there was nothing you could add to the information conveyed in the rdg. But I am so glad that your letter accompanied the rdg. I have rec’d so many encouraging messages from you. I liken myself to the man… [Luke 11:5-9]
“The rdg. seems all embracing and answers the questions I asked as well as the thoughts unexpressed, and certainly it does show the interdependence of the body, mind and soul.
“I wish I could talk to you and perhaps some day I can show the understanding and appreciation that a friend like you so richly deserves.
“With sincere love,” [370]
R3. 2/2/37 EC’s letter: “Thanks for yours of the 27th. Do hope you are feeling a whole lot better in every way. Yes, when we look about us and hear of so much suffering in so many ways, we can’t help but wonder if our little troubles amount to anything. Still, if we analyze the condition within our own selves we realize that the great trouble is only a multiple of the individual troubles, and have grown until they have a meaning all their own. Then they bring on wholesale destruction, thus giving all of us the opportunity to help the other fellow, show brotherly love, show sacrifice on our own part and thus counterbalance things, as it were. Thus, so, we have often gotten our own skirts clear not by our own goodness but by just trying. For the try of Abraham was counted to him for righteousness [Gen.15:6], and so it will be to us - if we will help make this old world a better place to live in. For if we do not add our part of prayer, good fellowship, patience, to this old world, we have really been a failure.
“Wish I might have a good long talk with you, but perhaps that will be also in the not too great distant future. Be that as it may, you have caught sight of a great light within. Nourish that spark of love, light and fellowship, and it will by the grace of God grow into the perfect understanding of divine love that is the essence of all health, wealth and happiness, of the divine nature. For His promise is that “the righteous heart will not faint, neither shall his children beg bread.” [Prov. 10:3; Ps.37:25] Keep up the good work, of study, study to show thyself approved unto God, a workman not ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth, keeping self unspotted from the world. [2 Tim. 2:15; Jas. 1:27]
“Nothing particularly new here. All fair. Hope you and yours keep busy; yes, and happy at the work of the Lord. For, supplying the daily needs of the body, if for a purpose, is as much the Lord’s work as preaching; but if it is for the purpose of just satisfying self, it is not so hot.
“Love and best wishes,” Sincerely, [Edgar Cayce]
R4. 2/14/37 Mr. [370] requested 1344-1 for his wife, saying: “Am feeling better and learning more and more day by day.”
R5. 2/25/37 “I believe I am gaining ground steadily, if slowly. Still that doesn’t describe what I should portray, for I am 1000% better off than I was 90 days since. I do mean, however, that I realize I have a long distance to cover to approach soundness.
“I wish every day I was big and strong enough to fully appreciate the full significance of the rdgs. as to their meaning to me and as to their meaning in real truth. I think I have never had any one thing in my experience that was so forceful in meaning to me as these rdgs., especially the last one. I am realizing more and more that the Father, the Christ spirit, is closer to me and I want to know Him more, to be worthy of His nearness.
“I want those days of distraught nerves and mental disturbances to be fewer and farther away, that my patience be increased, that I may see more clearly His way in everything. I am beginning to appreciate the Cross and its significance, of how the material or physical must be sacrificed when the spiritual life grows, to evolve into His likeness, to have His spirit.
“May God heap his richest blessings on you as we thank Him daily for you and your life and work.
“With love for you and all the staff of helpers,” [370]
R6. 2/28/37 & 3/4/37 Letters see under 4958-1 Reports.
R7. 3/14/37 “I am keeping up my treatments and feeling greatly improved. The best of all, I understand myself better. My greatest inconvenience is the repeated rising at night, breaking into my rest, but I am getting some relief from this - and oh, how good that sound sleep is!”
R8. 5/12/37 Reply to Questionnaire in re 370-4 and 370-5:
“Yes, in my opinion the analysis of the Rdg. did cover the condition. Symptoms of condition described correctly were the exhaustion, heart pressure, bladder and glandular disturbances. The physician’s analysis was high blood pressure, to be corrected by diet. He could give no prevention for the formation and passage of kidney stones, only operation, should they not pass by cutting way out.
“Yes, all suggestions given in the Rdg. are continued now, except osteopathic tr., since receipt of Rdg. late in Oct. ‘36 [370-4].
“The extent to which improvements have resulted: Not so much exhaustion. Can walk a few miles each day at my duties with less effects than 1/2 mile would have shown in Oct. Sleep sometime all night without evacuating bladder.
“The mental awakening has been more impressive than the physical. My appreciation and understanding of ‘the work’ are beyond words.”
R9. 6/5/37 He requested Physical Rdg. 1407-1 for his wife’s father.
R10. 10/6/37 “I am soon (this month) to see the anniversary of the beginning of the revelation to me of my physical and mental condition. The doctor gave me little encouragement and it dawned on me that my only hope was the source through you that reveals all conditions. When I rec’d the Physical Rdg. I realized it would take time and patience to keep me together, and in such a mind I began to follow instructions. I could soon tell that the tr. was having effect. The symptoms of high blood pressure began to disappear. My waist line began to diminish, and energy and vitality began to return, and the nervous excitement began to be more normal. I am not through and am continuing the treatment. While I do not have the physical stamina of my 20’s and 30’s, I am 1000% better off than a year ago.
“I am enclosing [monthly contribution] and also many thoughts of you.”
R11. 4/29/38 He obtained a Business Rdg. 370-6.
R12. 8/31/38 “In some of your replies to me you wanted to know about me. Well, the picture is not so pretty tonight. I am really a sick boy - blood pressure is up - I am suffering from arthritis in this right arm I am writing with and otherwise depressed. I don’t like to describe these things. I have so much wanted to get sound and well and to spend my time in usefulness and encourage others, but the machine seems to be in reverse and negative. I am in the process of having all my teeth pulled (all but 9 are gone) in the hope of easing this disturbing pain in my arm.
“Debts are accumulating on me in disturbing amounts also. My daily work is expanding and I dare not weaken.”
R13. 5/27/39 He referred Mrs. [1896] for a Physical Rdg.
R14. 11/2/39 He wrote that his work as Gen. Supt. of Road Work W.P.A. seemed to agree with him physically… “I thought in ‘31 & ‘32 I was about to arrive financially but the vision passed, as it did many others. Now I am glad it did. I don’t believe I was prepared to take it at that time, and, too, I may not have been here now to tell it. I am thinking of my physical condition revealed in rdg. in ‘36 [370-4] when I was about finished.”
R15. 12/18/39 See his letter under 370-3 Reports indicating “my kidneys are about to stop me.”
R16. 7/30/40 See his letter, under 370-1 Reports, indicating that his health requires constant attention.
R17. 8/27/40 See his next Ck. Physical Rdg. 370-7.
Background
Background
B1. See 370-4 on 10/23/36 for kidney stones, hypertension, prostatitis, lumbago, etc.
B2. 1/1/37 He reported improvement and submitted questions (see under 370-4 Reports), including: “I have enjoyed smoking cigarettes for a number of years - is this detrimental to my physical condition? Is there any suggestion for correction in my diet? as to mental attitudes that will help my physical condition. You see I am a little nervous and it is affecting my handwriting. When you can set the date (preferably in the afternoon) your conductor can consolidate or eliminate these questions as is indicated by the rdg.”
