This psychic reading given by Edgar Cayce at his home on Arctic Crescent, Virginia Beach, Va., this 17th day of January, 1936, in accordance with request made by the self - Mrs. [601], Active Member of the Ass”n for Research & Enlightenment, Inc.

Time of Reading 3:35 to 4:15 P. M. Eastern Standard Time. Detroit, Mich. (Entity. You will give for this entity a mental and spiritual reading, giving the reason for the entrance into this solar cycle, and particularly stressing the directions for the highest proper development and expression in this earth’s plane. You will answer the questions which she has submitted, as I ask them, regarding her mental and spiritual development through present associations.)

1. EC: There’s always so much more about an entity than may be at all times interpreted.

2. We have the entity here, [601].

3. In giving the mental and spiritual influences and forces, and purposes for which the entity entered the present experience in this particular solar system, there are many things, many conditions, that are hard at times to be put into words; and that those who are of the material-minded manner fail to comprehend or to understand.

4. While the body is made up of the three divisions; body, mind and spirit - they are one. Yet each interpretation and each application of self, of the entity, of the mental and soul mind, to its experiences in the earth, are JUST as separate or distinct as may be the application of the BODY to the elements in the earth. EARTH, AIR, FIRE, WATER - these are one, in their VARIED aspects, to human or bodily existence; and are each necessary.

5. So are the experiences of an entity in entering the sphere or consciousness of activity for the meeting of those experiences of self in its relationship to universal or cosmic or God-consciousness in that particular phase of experience.

6. Just as a treatment for a body over-exposed or underexposed to water or fire would not meet same in materiality in the same manner.

7. Thus may the varied experiences of an entity in its sojourns through the earth, or through the varied consciousnesses of its activity, be met according to a first law, a first principle:

8. “Know, O Israel, the Lord thy God is ONE!”

9. All power, all force, is a manifestation of that which is termed the God-consciousness.

10. These are elemental or first statements, first principles.

11. Then, the application of an entity in materiality, is that of the first and the last law:

12. “Love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, thy mind, thy soul - AND thy neighbor as thyself.”

13. Then, each appearance, each application of an entity to those first principles, first laws in its experiences through the earth, is for the purpose that it may be completed in that as given, “The Lord hath not WILLED that any soul should perish, but hath with every temptation prepared a means, a way, of escape.”

14. Then, for that purpose, for that activity, for that application of these laws, these principles, these causes in the experience of each soul, does each soul enter. For this is ITS purpose, THE purpose, for the entering into material or solar or earth’s manifestation at ANY time.

15. For in the earth or the earth’s dimensional experience one becomes (an entity, a soul becomes) aware that there are three phases of its being; body, mind, soul - yet all in one. Just as the laws - as those given - are One.

16. So, the activities of an entity into the earth are to meet SELF and make the application of the love of the Father as it would to itself, in the sons of men; that the glory of the Lord may encompass the earth - even to become His holy dwelling place.

17. This is the purpose of THIS entity’s sojourn; THIS entity’s activity.

18. How, then, may the entity - with the knowledge OF its own self’s activities in the earth, through its varied experiences in same - go about to apply same, to become more and more aware of its at-oneness, its consciousness OF its at-oneness with that consciousness of BEING one with this applied law, this applied love in its experience?

19. As has been given, “Do that thou KNOWEST to DO TODAY, and THEN the next step may be given thee.”

20. For ye know that ye are studying to show self approved unto that consciousness, that awareness, and are keeping self unspotted from that THOU knowest that might, would or could, cause thy brother to be offended. And ye come more and more, by such living, to the awareness of His presence abiding with thee! Not unto vainglorying, not unto self-consciousness; but rather that “Here am I, Lord, use me. Let ME be that channel of blessing to SOMEONE TODAY; that Thy love, Thy glory, Thy oneness, may be the greater manifested in not only my experience but those that I contact day by day.”

21. Ready for questions.

22. (Q) How can the experience as DEUL during those periods when the Christ walked in the earth aid the entity to understand the purpose and manner in which she may give of herself to others during this sojourn? (A) In just the manner that has been outlined. For, as was the experience of the entity then, there arose fears and doubts; qualms of those things that were done as for rote.

While it is true in nature that man sees spring follow the winter, summer the spring; and growth, and the glory of its harvest, and then the continued routine; but is not EACH spring as RENEWED life?

So, as every act of love becomes in its application NOT ROTE but a RENEWING, a regeneration, a GROWTH; thus does it become as He gave from that experience: To let him that partook of that which to him was unholy partake no more; let him that hath spoken unkindly SPEAK unkindly no more; let him that has failed in showing forth the love FAIL no more!

So, as the entity knows of those shortcomings during that experience, it becomes aware of their presence in the experiences in the present. For, the Lord is just - and man, as an entity, ONLY meets self!

23. (Q) Has the experience with [1073] and her son [988] fulfilled its purpose? Please explain the reason for my connection with these people. [See 601-10, Par. 12-A.] (A) As thou hast met in an individual here thine own self to give thee, as it were, patience with others, so may others be patient with thee. Fulfilled? No; only begun. For these will grow and grow, if they are pruned, if they are tended, if they are watered; if they are given the heat of love, the ground of growth, the air of blessings, the voice of the beauty in same.

For as the elements of the material world represent an association with the individual life, know these need, these will have, these MUST have, their understanding; ELSE we may find those things that become as ashes of despair, as the soot of dread, as the foulness of misunderstanding!

24. (Q) Please give advice as to mental outlook and mental attitudes as referred to in physical check reading given Nov. 22, 1935. [See 601-10, Par. 12-A.] (A) This has been discussed here. Again may it be amplified only in this:

Let the law of the LORD, as THOU KNOWEST it in thine heart, BE the RULE of THY life - and thy dealings with thy fellow man! And ye will find that the growth of the mind-spiritual, of the mind-mental, of the body-physical, will open the way for thee, day by day.

For, as those laws that become as but watchwords to many on the tower, there is a whole day’s work before thee each day, with all its glorious opportunities of seeing the glory of the Lord manifested by thine own acts!

Yet if that which confronts thee makes for discouragement, harshness of words, lack of enthusiasm, or those things that make for doubts or fears, the opportunity has turned its back - and what IS the outlook? Doubt and fear!

Study, then, to show thyself approved, EACH DAY! DO WHAT thou KNOWEST to do, to be aright! Then LEAVE IT ALONE! God giveth the increase! Thy worry, thy anxiety, only will produce disorder in thine OWN mind!

For the application in self, the TRY, the effort, the energy expended in the proper direction, is all that is required of THEE. God giveth the increase.

25. (Q) Is my approach to Mr. Cayce’s work as regards trying to help others, in the right direction? (A) This must be answered under each and IN each individual case within self.

Let this be rather thine outlook, thine approach:

As ye have received, give - unto others.

26. (Q) How can I be of service to interest others who are in need of help but are unable to understand the value of this source of aid? (A) Present same again, as has just been given. Present, and be not anxious as to the effect or the results. Not ALL that are called or that hear are ready, as yet, to answer. But as many as He hath quickened. Then leave it WITH Him, and their conscience - THEIR selves. And so state to others.

Then FAIL not to smilingly say, “It be on thine own head, not mine.”

27. (Q) What should be our attitude toward Mr. Mitshkun and Mr. B. Lasky and those connected with the arrest of the Cayce’s and Gladys Davis while at our home? (A) “As ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them.”

THAT should be the attitude. That is in keeping with the whole law!

28. (Q) Please outline our attitude and activity when the case comes for trial; especially should [480] be permitted to testify. (A) It would become necessary for her to testify. And the manner and the way and the means we have outlined, as to others - and should be the attitude of all concerned. [See Work rdg. of 1/13/36 - 254-89.]

29. (Q) Any other advice at this time? (A) (Long pause) Keep the way - Keep the way!

R1. 1/18/36 GD’s note in ltr. to Miss [480]: “Mrs. [601] I love that name; that’s why I never say Mrs. […] [most people called her Mrs. (1st initial) due to her long Russian name (euphonic)]. I think your Mental and Spiritual Reading was the most beautiful one I ever heard. I do wish you could have been present. Thanks for your note to me on the end of the questions. My letters to [480] are for you, too. I always think of you together, as one. You are such a COMPLETE family - one for all and all for one.

“If you get a chance, do see the movies ‘The Magnificent Obsession’ and ‘Peter Ibbetson.’ They are both psychic pictures, showing the greatest power is unseen. More and more we read books and see movies that are bringing out such things. So, if we’ll just have patience, I don’t suppose it will be long before we won’t be called crazy any more. We’re just pioneers in the psychic field, that’s all.

“I do hope Hugh Lynn has sent you a copy of the Work reading on the Detroit Case. I wanted to include one with your reading [See 254-89 on 1/13/36] when I mailed it yesterday, but he said he would write a letter to go with it. When we look at life from the viewpoint expressed in that reading, and yours, we realize that every moment is worth while - and exciting; if we will only glorify the power from within rather than from without.”

R2. 1/27/36 Mrs. [601]‘s letter: “Wed. eve. [1073] came in from … upset and seeking a change, anxious to be here with [480], the [1100]‘s and us. She stayed until Sat. a.m., feeling a little more eased and satisfied to know that it is within herself that she must find the understanding necessary for her peace of mind [following son [988]‘s death]. We discussed my mental rdg. and tried to explain to her, as best we could, the question and answer regarding them.

“My rdg. became much clearer after going over it many times. It is beautifully given and sincerely hope I am able to carry on as advised… My rdg. helps me to understand the approach to your work and also realize that - much that has been vague to me before this.”

R3. 3/16/36 GD’s ltr. to Miss [480]: “I’ve been intending to write for some time, but we’ve been rather rushed since getting back; at least, I have.

“Thanks again an awful lot for everything. It meant a great deal to me to be closely associated with you and your mother (particularly); you are so sweet and understanding and SPIRITUAL. [See next two paragraphs under 257-162, Par. R1, copy of which business rdg. was sent to her.]

“The weather is beautiful here now, and we are really enjoying it for a change. I hope you have been feeling fine, and that all the rest are well. Please let us hear from you when you feel like writing.

“Yesterday a great big box of oranges, etc., came from Mrs. [1073]. So she must have been leaving or about to leave Florida. It was sweet of her.

“We are planning on seeing all of you at the Congress this year.

“Please take care of yourself, and remember me to all…”

That was a little late (for the 2 a.m. meditation period recommended in 262-100, Par. 16-A, on 9/13/36) but I did remember the prayer. I am writing to Esther Wynne in a day or two.”

R9. 12/8/36 EC’s ltr.: “That was fine, that when you awoke you knew what it was for. Gertrude had the experience of waking but couldn’t remember just what she was to do, and didn’t recall it until she was relating her experience the next day, then all had a laugh on her. Quite a number have joined in that group (A.R.E. Prayer Group to meditate at 2 A.M. for 6 mos.) and am sure much will come of it.”

R10. 2/2/37 GD’s ltr. to Mrs. [601]: “Are you continuing the 2 to 3 A. M. meditation? I wake up most of the time for it, and really feel a great attunement with the divine source of all good - though I haven’t had any definite EXPERIENCE as yet. But it’s wonderful just to feel that you are a part of the divine plan and capable of participating in the good being spread abroad in the minds and hearts of those everywhere seeking light.”
