This Psychic Reading given by Edgar Cayce at his office, 115 West 35th Street, Virginia Beach, Va., this 20th day of March, 1929, in accordance with request made by his father, [257].

1. EC: Yes, we have the entity and those relations with the universe and universal forces, as are latent in the present experience. In the entering, astronomically we find the entity coming under the influence of Aries, the Moon, Venus, Jupiter, Mercury, with adverse influences in Neptune and benevolent influence in Arcturus and in the Uranian activities - especially as related to influences as come with Jupiter and Uranus when square with Venus, for we have an influence at the time that would be unusual as to Uranian, Jupiterian, and of Venus - for these are as BENEVOLENT influences for THIS entity. Being then out of the ordinary in the Uranian influence.

2. In the influences - these, as seen, may be given only as tendencies as may be builded in the present experience, and these may be altered or changed by the training or the environmental conditions, as well as the will of the entity. The TRAINING, then, may be in accord with the tendencies and thus bring harmony, peace, and an influence worth while, or the entity may be trained in opposition to tendencies and bring consternation and troubled conditions in the entity’s experience in the present earth’s plane, even to the extent where there may be physical forces affected in the individual - as has often been pointed out.

3. Tendencies, then, as we find with this entity:

4. One whose influence as to days and numbers - Wednesdays being the days of the greater influence as to tendency toward good. This as to numbers: 6, 15, 24. Either of these numerically bringing then the 6, or the doubles of 3’s, in the entity’s attitude toward elements - as would be influence in that of numerical conditions.

5. Those of the tendencies toward that of strong, healthy, bright, and toward that of the art and of the influences OF art in the life. This, then, covering a vast field - and may be brought into any of the channels as would be in keeping with that of the tendency, especially of delving into wood and its relations with those of arts and those of the precious stones, and as related to the influence OF such in the lives of individuals as are makers, keepers, or as those that are bringing about such changes in the material forces and conditions of the universe in its whole to such conditions. Then, training and keeping is such lines will bring to the body those of conditions that will be the more satisfactory in the present experience.

6. Those of which the body are to be warned and kept from:

Those of water and of influence - any influence - that water or waterways bring in the elements of the material experiences for the entity; though there will be the natural tendency to investigate such by the entity, and these should be gradually discouraged rather than assisted towards such. Not discouraged in the manner as forbidden; for to forbid a thing to the entity is to make it determine to know the end of that thought as is sought concerning same. Rather, then, by reason and by explanation of elements that are detrimental to the best interests OF the body, so train as to keep these in the background, but not forbidden.

8. In the abilities of the entity, these may be seen from those influences as has been in the experiences through which the entity has passed - for the entity would make a GREAT physician. In the appearances, then -

In the one before this we find in that period when the preparations were being made for revolution in the present abode of the entity, when there was the suasion from withdrawal, or the establishing of a liberty loving people into that of a oneness in purpose of OWN rule. The entity in the name Ivan Dorr. The entity then in that position of ruling those that were disabled in a physical and material sense in the land now about which the body has again entered, and in the heights as are above the city there may be seen evidences of this entity’s labors in the physical sense - on the mounds above the palisades. In the influence this has in the present experience, that tendency of the investigator as to intrinsic values and of intrinsic worth; yet not ALWAYS measuring same by MATERIAL worth. Get the variation! for this, as will be seen, will be an outstanding condition in the entity’s development; that is, a busybody, an inquisitive body, but not one that may be termed a meddler into other peoples’ affairs for the curiosity of the thing.

10. In the one before this we find in that period in the Roman rule when there were persecutions for the individuals who acclaimed the faith of the Nazarene. The entity then among those who were in power to administer the punishments meted out, and became a believer through the faith as shown by those so persecuted. Then in the name Eldoirn, and in the employ of the persecutor Nero. In this experience the entity gained through that of the ability to change the mind, and to act as the change would indicate in the physical and mental experiences of the body, DEVELOPING high in this experience; and in the present there may be seen that of one determined and one set; one not loathful in activity or in mind, but one that should be trained rather to play as well as labor physically, for one in THIS development may become one-sided - without the proper guiding of a whole, full, oneness of purpose. In the influence as will be seen in the developing of the entity, one that will be set - yet will not be so set, unless improperly trained, as not to be able to be shown that one is ever in the state of development, or of growth, in mind as well as in body. One that may gain the inner knowledge of spiritual effects in the material plane and make physical application of same.

11. In the one before this we find in the rebuilding of the Holy City. The entity among those who ministered to the needs of the ailing and the sick, and was the physician in this period to Ezekiel - who led this return. In the name Zedkahi, and the entity gained and lost through this experience - gaining in the application of self to those who labored in the cause; losing in the selfish stand as taken against those who persecuted the builders - and brought to self condemnation for self in the attitude assumed. In the influence in the present experience, the tendency toward the desire to know as concerning physical ills - yet loath to give sufficient time to learn well. This, as seen, is as contradictory to some influences given. Hence that of the influence to guide in the moulding stage to where sincerity and purpose must be, one, and the full knowledge before the application can be that as a basis for full development.

In the one before this we find in the land now known as Egypt, and the entity the offspring of the priest Ra-Ta] who was banished in this period, and coming into power - that brought the dissension in later periods. The entity in the name Isoda, and there still may be found among those of the entity’s doings - among the records as made and kept through the establishing of the school, or Islo as called then in that period, that were placed among the effects of Araaraart in the mount not YET uncovered. In that period the entity gained as a servant. Lost as attempting to administer the medicinal forces and learning as was gained in this Islo, or school - for the entity attempted to apply that in the material sense that were of the night side of life, or to apply the forces of the night side to the spiritual needs, and thus brought the first dissension after the re-establishment of a union in that land.

13. In the influence in the present experience, there will be found some understandings, some consternations, as to occult and occult influences - yet these, as given, with the ennobling influence in Jupiter and Venus, may bring renown, fame, fortune, and gain to the SOUL of the entity, in the study of those same tenets as were given in that period. Love, then, and nobleness, then, are the elements of success in the spiritual, mental, and physical life of this entity, [759].

14. Keep thine self in the ways that go up to the mountains, and not by the shadows of Armiza [?] [Amasa?] or into the tents of Kishlan [?] [Cushan?]. Rather to the house of David cling.

R9. 6/1/38 Mr. [257]‘s letter: “[759] said he wanted to know more about every appearance he has made - he is intensely interested.”

R11. 11/21/39 “You no doubt will receive a letter from [759] one of these days as he has asked me if it was all right for him to write you himself for a Reading. He says he would like to know what goes on in Mars and the other planets and a few personal things which he has in mind. He also wants to check up about his becoming a doctor. I met three little girls on the train coming in Saturday and they told me that my son was very naughty - that he had operated on a squirrel that he had found in the woods and brought in the liver, heart and kidneys to show the class. Now the teacher has decided to get him a set of doctor’s implements so he can operate on another squirrel in front of the class. I bet this will give you a good laugh but it thrills me.”

R20. 3/15/46 Case History given by Mrs. [903] to Gina Cerminara:

Male 17 years, 1 month CASE HISTORY

Subject was born on February 15, 1929. Birth was surgical. [JT’s note: Not caesarean.] Development of mental and physical after birth was normal. He was an only child until the age of 2 years when his brother was born. He had a nursemaid until 9 years of age.

He had the usual childhood diseases. At age … he fell on roller skates and broke his arm; at age … he fell out of a berth in a train and misplaced his collarbone; at age 8 he had a serious case of scarlet fever; and at 14 years a calcification in his neck caused him to be hospitalized for a week while the resulting infection was lanced. At present he is a very healthy specimen.

His school marks have always been superior and he has participated in the usual boyhood sports. At the age of 8 his family moved to the country where he became a leader in school and was the president of his small elementary school. Upon entering junior high school, he was lost in the mass and did not emerge again until he was 14. At that time his family returned to the city and he was transferred to a small private school. He says that his piano practice has kept him from being the athlete that he would like to be but has received his High School Letter for Soccer. He is now on the Soccer team in school, he was editor of the school year book, was voted the most likely to succeed, and is the valedictorian for his graduating class. He plans to be a doctor. [Cum Laude. Awarded cup for Best Scholar. Admitted to Harvard.]

Subject has never been a problem. He gets along well in school although he has a reputation of being conceited. He spends his evenings studying and on weekends he goes out with his boyfriends or to parties with girls. There is some sibling rivalry but this seems to be less rather than more than the average for brothers who are placed in such a competitive situation. The chief fault in his personality seems to be the fact that he cannot take criticism.

The family is well-situated financially and lives in a nice neighborhood. There is no apparent conflict in the home. The parents are modern in their methods of bringing up children and have always planned everything they did in the way that they thought would best benefit them.

R21. 1/9/47 Mr. [759]‘s letter from college:

Dear Hugh Lynn,

Just a note to wish you and Gladys an even more successful year with the Association than the old one. I feel confident that the problem of quo vadis which faced all those connected with the work in the past year or so is nearly at its solution. I guess as long as there are truths there will always be people to support them.

I have enjoyed my first term at Harvard, and despite its several shortcomings, it has one virtue which far outshadows all its failings - the group of students, diverse as they may be, still have one thing in common - they think. They are reflective. And in the end it is only through reflective thought that one accomplishes anything of real value. They manage to keep us quite busy, but now that my ‘adjustment period’ is pretty nearly over, I will find more time to devote to other interests. Widener Library has a tremendous number of books on psychical research and its related fields

• if anything arises which your own library cannot answer I would be glad to make use of the facilities up here.

I have been wondering whether there is a study group in Boston - for about the first time I’m completely out of contact with Association. I should also like to be put on the mailing list if it’s not too much trouble - that way at least I’ll have an idea of what’s going on.

I have found that a large number of boys up here are interested in the field of extra-sensory perception, and many know a surprisingly lot about the subject. Needless to say, THERE IS A RIVER is having widespread circulation - from the head of the Department of Psychology on down. The day is coming…

R22. 4/17/47 [759]‘s letter to HLC:

Dear Hugh Lynn:

I understand from Mother you had quite a full week in New York. I’m very glad you were able to meet and talk with those who are probably going to make a significant contribution to the work in general from the scientific point of view.

As Mother may have told you, I was invited by Ullman and Bill Davidson to work with them this summer. If my plans materialize, the Association will play an integral part in this particular work, and in the subsequent work to follow. It was explained to me that psychical researchists in America have a great wealth of experimental data, while at the same time are very weak in theory. That is where I hope to be able to make in important contribution. Because of my ‘exposure’ to the unique information to come through the readings, I have on call a large amount of detailed philosophical theory. And now to get a little more practical: In the last few weeks I have been attempting to develop a basic - call it formula - which I believe will integrate the thousands of apparently unrelated facts in the fields of Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Psychology, Metaphysics, and what have you. Its quite interesting to say the least, and it may shed an entirely new light on some of the treatments given in the readings. My greatest task is to be specific enough to make evidential experiments practical. My first step (before I begin on the cancer work with Ullman) will be to spend a week or so at the beach. I plan to go through as many readings as I can find that may aid in substantiating the theory. For example, the readings on cancer, telepathy, and the famous battery. Furthermore, if I can extract any significant material concerning Ullman’s theories, there will be an extreme interest from that quarter

• a practical one. I imagine that your visit stirred up considerable attention to the readings, but as you well know, it will probably remain passive unless actual practical work is done to warrant active interest. It remains to be seen how much of a hindrance my limited technical knowledge will be. I am sure however that if I come across specific problems of a technical nature, there are several physicists etc. interested who will furnish the technical assistance called for. You see, I am trying to bring all these terribly abstract and highly theoretical ideas onto a plane where they can be attacked from an experimental basis. And assuming, as we all do, that the ideas are true ones, then if we can devise experiments to support them, they will necessarily be successful. Well, I hope to be able to go into much greater detail when I see you than I can here - School is out the 26th of May, and I won’t be able to give you specific dates until around that time. Here’s hoping the River gets a chance to overflow the banks…

R23. 3/14/49 Letter from [759] to HLC: “I had a rather strange set of experiences last night, and I believe you had something to do with them, consciously or otherwise. I’m sure I don’t remember all of what happened, and the transition from sequence to sequence is pretty blurred anyway.

Yesterday one of the boys whose running a hypnosis experiment looked up someone he had tested about 3 years ago and had been interesting. He was working with a pack of E.S.P. cards and tested him. He hit about an average of 6 for ten runs. Then he put him under hypnosis and suggested he would do very well when he was tested after he awoke. He woke him, and then tested him for one run. He got 4 out of the 25. Then as he started the second run, the subject dropped into a clairvoyant trance - and run thru 14 cards before he woke up again. He got 10 of the 14 cards correct; 2 he missed and 2 he said he didn’t know. However, it wasn’t just blind guessing - he said afterwards that the experimenter simply turned each card around so he could see it; the two he didn’t know he said were triangles, and confused him. Enough of this - needless to say he’s a very interesting case altho I haven’t met him yet. He also did a little ‘travelling clairvoyance’ under hypnosis a little later with only my name, he described what I was wearing in detail, my hair and eyes, and also a girl who I was discussing at the time. This was 40 miles from Harvard. He’s about 18, and might well be capable of a high development, if he’ll cooperate. I’m going to get him to read TIR and see if it will stir up his imagination.

Anyway - back to me - the first things I remember was dreaming that I was testing this person. He called two [triangle drawn], and I then looked at the two cards very closely. Well they would look like [Triangles were drawn below this paragraph on original. Ses Source File Key #759 for drawing in re 759-1.] from a distance, but actually were not. I think they were a Masonic symbol, and I was quite amazed to see them in the ESP deck. Now, from this I merged into a meeting of some sort. It ceased taking on the dream aspects, and I became aware that I was in a somewhat different state.

As I thought of the symbol, everything but one symbol faded out completely, and I found myself among a lot of people, near the top of a barren hill. As I said, it was a sort of meeting. I was looking up, and this symbol was standing out against a starry, clear sky. It was dark (the symbol) and served as a sort of backdrop. It looked about like this as I remember, altho at the time it was fantastically clear - either -

I would recognize it again if I saw it. The little round thing was a blue rose [drawing] - I think it had a slight reddish tinge. The word rosarie, rosarie, kept injecting itself into the situation.

Now above the symbol was what looked like an Italian woodcarving or piece of sculpture, very large, of an angel group etc. - side view of whole scene - [See Source File Key #759 for drawing - [sculpture, starry sky, symbol, top of hill] in re 759-1.]

The sculpture was just hanging there. The things that were most emphasized was the symbol, the bluish flower, the word rosarie, and also - here’s where you come in - the words ‘ask Hugh Lynn Cayce’ repeated over and over. About this time, I began to realize I was at another initiation of some sort - and was actually having a projection. At this point I was, so to speak, ‘fully conscious’. I couldn’t tell just [what] was going on however up at X on the picture. I then left the hill, going over a great deal of barren land which I usually travel over when I’m ‘out’. I was travelling on my back at first, and could only see leafless trees and the dark sky. Then I managed to turn myself over and could see what was below me - barren land. Then gradually I began to recognize things, crossed a highway with cars, saw the New York skyline

• and then was whisked back and was able to open my eyes. I had the same itchy, tingling sensation on the lower part of my body that I had once before, when I realized I was going thru another initiation - I’m sure I told you about that one
• the red powder, the red james [flames?], etc. This is the first experience I’ve had in several months - The first business about the testing was apparently just a symbol dream to introduce the symbol - It’s easy to distinguish between a dream and an experience.

After about 10 minutes (this was 7:30) I went to sleep again and had another dream. This time something had happened to you, and I became very excited because I remembered (in the dream) the projection experience and for some reason or other it was completely precognitive. Of what I can’t remember - but it was very clearly precogn. of something. Then I woke up again.

See if any of this might mean something to you. It’s confusing to write it, but is all very clear in my mind.

Anyway, there’s been a pressure all day on me to tell you so I have - Regards …

P.S. Before I went to sleep last night, I felt I’d be going somewhere that night.”

R24. 3/24/49 HLC’s letter: “I cannot claim any conscious knowledge of participating in the dream, but I certainly hope I was there. You have been the subject of many conversations between [903] and myself but I do not believe this can account for the specific details which you describe.

At a meeting of the New York Group last Wednesday evening, March 16, we tried hypnosis on one of the members of the Group and endeavored to direct him to … as an observer. One of the girls took notes on this and I will send you a transcript of it. As a matter of curiosity, but not acceptable as evidence, one of the girls, who is slightly clairvoyant, claimed to have seen a flower in front of the boy who was hypnotized. When I asked her to describe it, she thought it looked kind of like a rose, but bluish.

Do not fail to send me reports on any other experiments or experiences you are making there. They are most interesting and, in writing, make the best kind of evidence.

You are doing a swell job there at … with the parapsychology group. It is quite a step to get Murphy [Gardner Murphy, Ph.D.] and the kind of sponsorship you have secured. Nice going.”

R25. GD’s note: Young [759] became very active in writing and speaking - on extra sensory perception and Parapsychology.

R28. 8/10/58 He got married (to a lovely girl, a Gentile). Subsequently he served in the Army for a few years as a psychiatrist.

R29. 6/2/65 GD’s note: HLC just told me that [759] is now on the staff of the hospital where he interned and is considered an outstanding physician in his field.

You’ve done a good job, believe me - first you get his daddy the frame of mind of ‘marriage’ - you find his mother - you advise them what to do to bring a fine, normal baby to the new life, and tell them what he will be and when he will come. So, [759] arrived - almost - when the doctor stated a cesarean operation would be necessary - we telephoned you from hospital - in 30 minutes - you said wait 10 hours and all will be well - also to have the doctor give a proper injection of narcotics (903-12). All was done as given and all came as promised. So the boy - everyone says - is above the average, strong, clear-eyed, wonderfully shaped head, and promises now to be the ‘splendid receiver’ of further instructions for his journey on this plane. He will travel as designated, I assure you, and following the ‘tenets of old’ - one more of the chosen race will be offered to the shrine of service to mankind. So I bring him to you, for guidance and acceptance into the ‘work’

• just as in the first book of Samuel. He is promised to the Lord - just as I have always promised - my work was ever under your guidance - so now I bring him to you as Samuel was brought to Eli. My only prayer is that he will be to this day and age as was Samuel to his day, and that you will be as successful as Eli.

B5. 3/10/29 “Well, Judge, we have a fine baby and all was as scheduled - a la’ Cayce. [903] phoned you last night to thank you for everything - the baby’s cup is darling and he’ll use it with much pleasure. We tried to get the ‘E’ for Edgar in his name but ‘Grandma’ [325] won, as we followed the reading.

“I’d love to have a Life Reading on [759], born at … He is at home all day long. I’d like to get his days, his numbers, his past appearances - who he was and what will his future inclinations be. How we should begin to develop him for humanity’s best interest and his best service to mankind. Also how we can develop him to the best interest of the Association’s work. As Jacob was given by Isaac to the word of God, so I bring this child to the shrine of the Cayce Hospital and the Association to dedicate his life to its everlasting help to humanity and to proclaim your name and its love as you have manifested it.”

“I am only hoping that in my feeble efforts I may be able to add in some way to his pleasure, to his understanding, and to his determination - as may come in his life through his association with the work of our Association. I feel quite a responsibility, almost as much for him as if he was my own boy. I trust I may add to his life even as Eli did to Samuel. I trust I will be able to guard my own sons even better than Eli did his.”
