This psychic reading given by Edgar Cayce at his office, 115 West 35th Street, Virginia Beach, Va., this 28th day of January, 1926, in accordance with request made by self - [900].

Time of Reading … Street, 2:50 P. M. Eastern Standard Time. New York City.

1. GC: You will have before you the body and the enquiring mind of [900], of … St., N.Y. City, and the dreams this body had on the dates which I will give you. You will give the interpretation and lesson to be gained from each of these, as I read same to you, and you will answer the questions which I will ask you regarding same.

2. EC: Yes, we have the enquiring mind of the body, [900] with the dreams that come to the body from time to time. These, as we see, in their various phases, represent in the physical conscious mind those conditions as have been weighed in the mental forces of the entity, with the subconscious; thereby gaining the greater insight, through same, of the action of phenomenized forces in the physical plane, and as to how these apply directly to the entity, in thought, and through same, in action, as relating to self, position with others, and to others’ relations and thought, and action, toward self. Ready for dreams.

3. (Q) Sunday Night, Jan. 23, 1926, while reading Papini’s Life of Christ. “Dr. Eldsberg is Good!” (A) This, as we see, when co-related with that information as given regarding same, as seen with that co-related in the subconscious forces of the entity, this entity GOOD in that phase of the phenomenized forces presented by that entity in the physical world.

4. (Q) Does this mean Dr. Eldsberg’s finger treatment is the right one and will be effective as related to Mrs. [139]? (A) No.

5. (Q) He is waiting to see if it will do the work without operating to close up that artery. Will the treatment make the operation unnecessary, in spite of no light application? (A) No. In this we find, through the questions of the physical mind, the entity attempting to apply lessons for the spiritual side of phenomenized forces to purely physical application in PHYSICAL sense, see? Get the difference, the change in each.

6. (Q) Or does this simply put the O.K. approval upon Eldsberg as a doctor? (A) As a doctor. As that as given, see?

7. (Q) Sunday morning, Jan. 24. “Now the following seems not only to steer my mental faculties into helpful channels, but also to contain a prophesy. Moreover, it seems nearer to a direct message as to how to better teach and preach the gospel, and how and when the opportunity will be presented.

My brother [137] died of a stroke of apoplexy - having bursted a blood vessel. I became heart broken over it - so terribly affected that even [140] put her arm about me to sympathize. In some way, through this tragedy to my brother, I gained a sudden prestige in the theological world, and before me appeared many sects of the Jewish Faith, the orthodox unpaneled in one partition, the reform in another, etc. all the tribes of Israel divided into rich, poor, strict, liberal, etc., rising in tiers before me, and I at their foot viewing them - teaching them, free of the barriers that hedged them in. I strove to bring them together, but many turned their faces the other way. Their inherited prejudices were too great. Then God, or the Divine of God within me, directed me, and I heard the direction in that which sounded like a voice, saying: “Teach them the FATHER IDEA advanced by Christ.” (A) In this there is presented to the entity, in this emblematical form, as to how and what the death of the brother meant to the entity, in how the entity gaining, then, the full knowledge of what the death of the Savior, Redeemer, Jesus, meant to the world, and in that gaining the teaching of how same will be, should be, could be, presented to the peoples, for, as is seen, the various teaching as have been presented, in first the one God rather than many God’s; the just God, the all loving God; then, that as is presented in the idea as is seen in Jesus. God the Father, the Father of all those who would come to the whole Oneness of purpose with THAT force called, or magnified in the world, and termed God, which is, as we see, merely in the mind of Man that as is set to represent that all powerful force as is manifested through the physical conditions seen in the physical world. As the entity gains those lessons, more and more will there be seen, not only as has been given as of old, “First to the Jew, then to all that will harken.”

8. (Q) Here is another viewpoint - Teach them the “Father IDEA” - What straightforward simple word, with what a deep meaning. I have felt myself, or in myself, the evolving of a new Idea - the Idea of “Father Christ” leading us to the Oneness with the Whole Creative Force. Correct? (A) Rather that as seen, as given, that the Christ, the brother in flesh, presenting then the Fatherhood. Hence the brotherhood of man, and the Fatherhood of God.

9. (Q) What is indicated by [137]‘s death? Any prophesy here? (A) Rather that only as given. Necessary that the purpose in the death be seen, of that which brings redeeming forces to the world; as it brings to an individual, so to the world, see? Not a prophesy of any individual’s death, see, but rather that of the Brother, as in Christ.

10. (Q) “Then a lady, wearing glasses, and with her child, entered. She was a Christian and told me the story of her child. She seemed to want to gain admittance - the many seemed to refuse her, and I was sorry. She seemed to want her boy to learn the things I was teaching. Maybe the next generation, where my teachings will have greater effect - if refused by the Jews, then accepted by the Christians, again as of old. Little wonder then, mine own people looked poor and fenced in.” (A) This as the presentation to the entity of that as has been, and is, carried in the mental forces, as pertains to the message. Many will come in the present day and generation. The young must be taught, and brought in that way, even as the Master taught, “Suffer little children to come unto me, for of such is the kingdom of heaven,” and unless we ALL become as little children, lest we all come with the desire, even as this mother, even though there be scorn upon the face, the actions, of many; yet that desire, that love, for those conditions that bring the full concept of the Fatherhood of God is that redeeming force as is manifest in the world.

11. (Q) What will happen as here indicated or prophesied, and how should I meet the problems? (A) As given. So simple that the child may see; for, as is seen in this day and generation, as has been said, “The children lead where the old dare not follow,” for unto him there has been given that message that will reach to those that, to the world, to the theologian as of the present day, will mean the new lesson, the new light, to the young in many places, for that innate desire of the love of the Father is in all.

12. (Q) “I was taking a shower in an old sort of place, and the bottom of tub was all black. Dirty surroundings didn’t appeal to me. My mother came in and said: “[140] had a dream last night. She dreamed [137] died of apoplexy and that you were made head of all the tribes of Israel. It’s ridiculous of course.” (A) This, as we see, again, as is presented to the entity, the washing, the cleansing, the baptism, of the body; the putting away of those old ideas, those old conditions that hedged the mental of the peoples about, brings to the entity that as is to be presented through the message, as is to be given to the many peoples, see? and, as is seen in the presentation of same here in this, from the lowly surrounding, from the lowly condition, which seemingly is as the obnoxious to the physical forces, as is presented through that condition of the lesson, the word, to all Israel.

13. (Q) Seems to have again impressed me as of the days of old - Moses head of the tribes living to a ripe old age - respected of his people. But what of this dream of [140]‘s, and does it portend anything about [137]? (A) Only that as has been given, and as is seen, in how this brings to the body that of the leader, as of Israel. The assistant as is seen in the brother, both as in the flesh as of the leaders in the day, and as in the Brother, as is seen, in the Christ. NOT of a physical condition, no; but as of a recognized condition by those forces as are seen, through mother, through [140]. That is, as the world sees, see? The twain shall give the lessons to the world.

14. (Q) “The panels again, and there seemed to be a board meeting of leading men. They seemed to be prominent men - men at the council table governing the affairs of the people. We were dressed alike, in dark dignified suits, the coats braided and tailored perfectly. Here I was older, the iron gray showing at my temples in my hair. I stood up to address the board and there seemed scholars, philosophers, men of all times, but of great minds. The many were seated in the panels - poor souls who could see but who, when I spoke, turned their heads so that they could not see. The board awaited me to present the program. Then I missed my brother. He was not at this table, the conference of the great, and I broke down and cried. ‘My brother is dead,’ I said, ‘And I’m lonesome without him.’ ‘That’s alright, Old Man,’ said one of my co-executors, ‘Through his death you attained this high estate.’ ‘But he has gone from me.’ The man put his arm consolingly around me.” (A) This, as we see, again and again presenting to the entity those lessons as have been given, only presented in the various forms and manners, see? The same lessons of how the entity presents messages to those peoples, though hedged about, how necessary that stability of purpose, of intent, as is found in the Brother, see?

15. (Q) Just what is here indicated as regards my position in some exalted state, gained because, or by means, of [137]‘s death?* (A) NOT of [137]‘s death. Of the Brother, in Christ’s

death, see? and the exalted position reached by that Oneness of purpose of the entity to present those truths as are found in the teaching of that Brother, in the way same may be manifest in the world to-day.

R1. 1/28/26 He wrote that his wife, Mrs. [136], had just had a miscarriage: “Surely all too bad, but we must abide by the inevitable, hoping we will know better the next time.” [See 136-27 through 136-32.]

R2. 2/1/26 “I am enclosing a rather peculiar letter of appeal for funds for a cause to which I contributed last year. Now I am very willing to send them a small contribution again this year, realizing that their cause is worthy enough and that they gain little for such a remote and out of the way place, particularly when the attitude assumed in the letter is one typically of southern white towards the black brother, and as the letter indicates the uppish white man himself needs plenty of education. However, it’s not mine to judge either, only to help both where I may, the one to do good, the other to gain, but I would like to know something of these people and their work, and knowing your familiarity with the South and particularly your knowledge of people black and white in Alabama, I thought you might furnish me with some information in general and possibly you might even know these people themselves and tell me something about them. I’ll appreciate anything you may do for me here.”

Dear [900]:-

I’m sure I should have answered you or written you, but I just haven’t hardly known what to say; but this being one of those dark, gloomy, dismal days, the kind that makes a fellow wonder HOW MUCH and WHAT is worth while, I’m sure to read and try to answer your letters will put as much stimulus and pep into me as anything, for nothing radiates pessimism as pessimism. Nothing radiates optimism and sunshine as optimism and sunshine. So, then, to feel and know the wonderful amount of faith, energy, and hard work, that you are expending, under ALL the difficulties under which you have labored, certainly should be worthwhile, to me, who is trying to consecrate his whole life to this work; but you having gained so much of the presence of the Universal Forces, are certainly able to create in others a confidence in their inner lives, of those you meet and contact, that makes any condition in life worth while.

I will certainly be glad to have the first part of your article. [See 900-194] I’m sure that I will enjoy it very, very much, for I am impelled to believe that it is going to mean so very much in the lives of so many. I will also be glad to have the suggestions you have to make regarding what I tried to write. [See Source File Key #4905 for Cayce booklet re 4905-53.] I’ll appreciate any criticism that you have to offer, for I fully realize that it is made in the right spirit, with the right purpose, and I want to do that which is the right thing.

No, as I wrote you, these people [Mr. and Mrs. John Hayes of Norfolk Psychology Club, referred to EC by Mrs. Miriam W. Bethea of the Birmingham Psychology Club, where EC had lectured, who had approached EC about possibility of joining in their efforts to establish an institution between Cape Henry and Virginia Beach where tenets of psychology might be studied.] did not make me an attractive proposition. They simply talked beautifully concerning their ideals, and seemed to feel that my own efforts might be made compatible with theirs; but, when I am in touch with these again, and if it is possible to do so, I want to get you to-gether, for I am sure you can help them; not financially, I don’t mean, but mentally and spiritually, as much or more than I can. So, I don’t think it is even worth while to consider taking a reading for this at the present time. Should there be more developments, should it come the time when we would want to see these people and talk to them, we might then take a reading before we went into conference. Or, they may not be the right ones at all, for DON’T FORGET, the readings have told me who is able to handle this, and handle correctly! And who has the message, and who I should strive, with my every effort, to be of assistance to. [GD’s note: He means [900].]

I’m certainly sorry physical conditions have been such as to bring sordid conditions to [137]‘s mind, or such as to cause him to be upset and worried. I am in hopes, however, that he is gaining sufficient knowledge of the data as given as to know whether it is really WORTH WHILE studying or not, for YOU know, [900], I do NOT want to fool myself, and most of all I do NOT want to fool anyone else. The Lord forbid that I ever get to the point where I would ever attempt to waver any manifestation of the Forces as are manifested through me, for secular or personal interests.

I am sure that the loss to you in conditions that have happened recently with your wife, must be one of the most trying experiences of your whole life; yet, when we study the readings just a bit, and you realize they told you the greatest disappointment was coming to you at this time, and other information it has given you, then there must be hope. Perhaps, from that already given [See 900-179], October will see the time when you will know that your fondest dreams are to be realized. Then, your meditation upon the vision of the Christ has certainly brought peace and strength to you, in more ways than one; and you find that the whole experience brings you to a greater At-Oneness with this Creative Force and Power, the God of our Universe. Then the fears of the flesh man become as naught to your inner self, yet while “thick enclosed within these vestures of decay” these panicky feelings must come, ever and anon, and one realizes why the Man, called Jesus, drew apart into the mountain to pray.

Yes, you may be very sure, that which you have sought and found, that which you have knowledge of within your inner self, is that something all men are seeking, and as you give out, little by little, you will see, in YOUR DAY, others gaining a concept of that inner consciousness. Perhaps not just in the same way and manner that you have gained same, but from your direction, that necessary for their individual development, that which will bring OTHERS to that consciousness - that God, the Father lives in the earth to-day, and He is just as anxious that He be manifested through His sons as He was to manifest through Him who walked by Galilee; for God is not skimped with His blessings but as He has said, “Him whom I will honor, I will honor.”

Yes, more and more as we study the question, more and more do we recognize God, the Father; Jesus, our Brother - Heaven, our Home. What manner of Heaven, then, would we make? How long will we remain away? How soon will we make ourselves an At-Oneness with the Whole Divine Force? How soon can we make ourselves come to that realization, that we may be One with Him, but never the whole cheese ourselves; for the more we rebel, more do we create the torment, the fears, the dreads, that are of that nature which we manifest through in the earth’s plane.

Then your Mother wonders much as did Jesus’ Mother, “And she kept those sayings and pondered them in her heart.” That’s just what your Mother has said, put in a little different words.

Have you ever gotten that book, “The Man Nobody Knows,” by Bruce Barton? I’m sure you will enjoy it.

Yes, peculiarly enough, I know considerable concerning the school you were asked in the enclosed letter to contribute to, and I might write you page after page concerning the condition of these people in that part of the country. I have visited this school in particular, know several of these people personally. Were I asked to judge, some would be good, some would be bad. Carmichael though has an exceptional personality and a great deal of ability for both good and bad.

Perdue Hill [Negro School in Alabama] is only few miles from Selma, Alabama, where I lived for twelve years. For several years, just before leaving there, I made a considerable study of the situation there, for I was so situated that I came in personal contact with many of the leaders of the various institutions and schools that are trying to help these people. In many places, there is a lot of people’s money spent, when the man that it’s meant for never gets anything. There are many other places that the abilities of the leaders are such that they make a little money go a long ways. I’m enclosing you a little clipping from the Selma Times Journal of a few days ago, which shows you what the State and Counties in the State are doing for these conditions. Most of these schools are not in accord with this movement, for like many peoples, the leaders desire to be the great “I am.” However, this particular one, I think, is worthy of some consideration.

I’m certainly in hopes that Mrs. [139]‘s general physical health will be such that should the operation be found necessary, that she will have little or no difficulty in overcoming same. I’m glad that your wife [136] is getting along well. I am sure she must have done exceedingly well, to be brought home so soon from the hospital. This is too bad that this occurred [the miscarriage]. Yet, the all wise Providence, if we will only see it, use each and every circumstance to make us better acquainted with His marvelous Force and Power, in this physical world.

Certainly sorry that we [editorial we] got things kind of balled up on Southern. I’m in hopes things work out alright on General Electric and other things. [See 1/22/26 900-188, Par. 16-A—20-A.]

I’m in hopes things are getting in shape now, so that you’ll have more time on the work you’re trying to do. As I said before, I’ll be glad when you have an opportunity to get to that data I sent you, for we want to get those out. I’m sure it’s time, and I believe they’ll be worth something to us. I had some application cards and envelopes and letterheads and Life Reading cards printed - gave the order for them, will get them the latter part of this week.

Nothing particularly new going on here. Certainly a great amount of building. I understand from hearsay, and the papers, that there’s never been a season when there was as much activity in Virginia Beach property as at the present time. A great many seem to think that in the early Spring there will be an inflow of people from Florida, and other sections of the country that have been on the boom, even people in Florida tell me they understand that many of the people who have been operating there expect to come to Virginia Beach by April or May. We asked the agent concerning the sale of the property here, but they tell us that the owner won’t even consider making a price on same, they say they don’t think it’s the time to sell. I certainly hope though that we don’t have the hard luck of having to move out when the season opens up here.

We’ll try and send you some more of the readings to-day and to-morrow. I think the greater part of next week is already filled up with appointments.
